Book SynopsisThis book explores how people encounter, understand, live with and respond to health risks associated with social, economic and political inequality. Complementing a traditional public health approach, the book moves beyond a focus on categories of morbidity and their structural causes. Instead, it focuses on everyday understandings and actions for people living in unequal social conditions. Making use of a variety of case studies related to physical and mental health, the authors emphasise interpersonal relationships, biographical meanings and the daily tactics of âgetting byâ. These are recurrently linked to the social-structural aspects of particular times and places. The book: Draws upon, applies and extends the biopsychosocial approach, which is well known to students of public health. Respects and gives due weight to the experience in context of people who live with health inequalities, in domestic and local settings. Book SynopsisUnpacking Critical Race Theory (CRT) and exploring why it has become a focus in politics across the US and the UK, White Lies uses CRT to expose the systemic racism that shapes education. It charts the coordinated campaigns involving think tanks, mainstream media and politicians that have tried to silence antiracism in the wake of George Floyd''s murder and ''Black Lives Matter''.Each chapter is devoted to exposing a key white lie' by examining the evidence that shows how the interests of white people continue to occupy centre stage and block movement towards a more equitable education for all. Gillborn establishes how the public debates, shaped by misinformation and ''white lies'', sustain race inequity and portray antiracism as a threat to freedom and justice. Key controversies are dissected and debunked, including: the extensive and coordinated anti-CRT campaigns in the US and the UK; the use of racial gaslighting to undermine cl

Book SynopsisPractical Social Justice brings together the mentorship experiences of a diverse group of leaders across business, academia, and the public sector. They relay the lessons they learned from Dr. Joseph L. White through personal narratives, providing a critical analysis of their experience, and share their best practices and recommendations for those who want to truly live up to their potential as leaders and mentors. As one of the founding members of the Association of Black Psychologists, the Equal Opportunity Program, and the Freedom Train' this book focuses on celebrating Dr. White's legacy, and translating real world experience in promoting social justice change. Experiential narratives from contributors offer a framework for both the mentee and the mentor, and readers will learn how to develop people and infrastructure strategically to build a sustainable legacy of social justice change. They will be presented with ways to pragmatically focus social justiceTrade Review"Dr. Joseph L. White, the Father of Black Psychology, was a consummate scholar, teacher, educator, and mentor. This book is a manifestation of his "Freedom Train;" a train of generations of his mentees who continue to carry his legacy of examining the effects of the lack of cultural representation in mental health, educational research, and organizational leadership, forward. Joe (as he was affectionately known to all) always said he would know it was time for him to rest when his mentees surpassed him--this book is a testimony to everything he poured into those who have contributed their outstanding work to this book." – The White Sisters (Lori White, Lynn White Kell , and Lisa White)"By reading the chapters in this text, you will bear witness to Dr. White’s enduring contribution to the lives of past and future generations. The futures of (liberation) psychologies are bright because of the paths Dr. White paved. Hop on the Freedom Train. Be inspired to continue the legacy of Dr. White."- Helen A. Book SynopsisMotherhood after Incarceration: Community Reintegration for Mothers in the Criminal Legal System explores the relationships of women with their children immediately after periods of incarceration. The analysis draws on in-depth interviews with 39 women who are mothers and who had  recently been released in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area. Using data collected from these interviews, the authors address three interrelated questions: (1) How does incarceration affect mother/child bonds? (2) What obstacles interfere with successful reintegration of these mothers into the community? (3) Do mothers who regain immediate custody of their children after incarceration reintegrate better than those with delayed (or no) resumption of child custody? Implications of these findings for policy are explored. The research results demonstrate the struggles justice-involved mothers experience over time as they seek to reintegrate into the community and resolve their relationTable of ContentsChapter 1.
