Chapter 1 identifies the range and scope of policies and practices related to the investigation and adjudication of sexual assaults on college campuses in the U.S. While many workers in the United States experience workplace sexual harassment -- resulting in substantial costs to them and their employers -- the extent of sexual harassment and the magnitude of its effects are not fully understood as discussed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 reviews federal science agency policies and procedures for addressing sexual harassment involving federally-funded STEM researchers and their trainees. The book will also explore lessons learned, enduring challenges, and future opportunities for preventing and mitigating the negative impact of sexual harassment in STEM studies and careers. Chapter 4 is the full transcript of the Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act of 2019. Victims/survivors of sexual assault may experience severe feelings of anxiety, stress, or fear. This book demonstrates some mental health problems that sexual assault victims may experience. It focuses on some topics about (a) post-traumatic stress disorder; (b) obsessive-compulsive disorder; and (c) mental contamination. Clinical experience and empirical studies show that many victims of sexual assault suffer from a distressing feeling of being contaminated for years or decades after experiencing sexual violence. This phenomenon is called mental contamination and was first identified by Rachman (1994). Mental contamination is defined as the experience of contamination-related feelings of dirtiness in the absence of direct physical contact with a contaminant. This psychological sense of contamination involves internal and emotional feelings of dirtiness that may be evoked by unwanted thoughts and images, as well as by memories of negative events such as from sexual assaults. Mental contamination has also been found to be prominent in victims of sexual assault and in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As behavioral consequences of the feeling of mental contamination, victims of sexual assault suffer feelings of mental contamination and might show excessive washing behavior, and may develop Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The book presents cognitive theory of the mental contamination in order to demonstrate how this problem can be treated. In addition, the book presents clinical guidelines based cognitive behavioural therapy for the mental contamination that can develop.

Jenny was a Labor MP for twenty-three years, a Cabinet minister for six years, and now gets to view the parliament through the reflective eyes of someone who is no longer there. I'm in my first term as a Labor MP. So we have a generation between the beginnings of our time in the parliament. When Jenny was first elected in 1996, I was in my final years of high school. In that time, the number of women in the Australian Parliament has increased, but unfortunately, they are still not being heard. And tragically, they are not always safe. As women, we believe in the power of politics to do good, and as feminists we recognise that politics is about power: getting it, holding onto it, and using it to improve citizens' lives. Women wielding power in Parliament House, women fighting for equality and an end to discrimination across our country, have made their mark and they have caused change. But the underlying problem of men's attitudes towards women, of men believing it is their right to assault or harass women, remains. For this to change, men will have to give up some of the harmful ways in which they use powerin the parliament and in our community. We are calling for actions to have consequences, and for an end to a culture of political impunity. We want to seize this moment to do the unfinished workto make sure that women are not just in the room, but that they are safe there. We say enough is enough.
