  • De Gruyter Modifying Adjuncts

    15 in stock

Unlike the notion of "argument" that is central to modern linguistic theorizing, the phenomena that are commonly subsumed under the complementary notion "adjunct" so far have not attracted the attention they deserve. In this volume, leading experts in the field present current approaches to the grammar and pragmatics of adjuncts. The contributions scrutinize i.a. the argument-adjunct distinction, specify conditions of adjunct placement, discuss compositionality issues, and propose new analyses of event-related modification. They are meant to shed new light on an area of linguistic structure that is deemed to be notoriously overlooked.

  • De Gruyter The Expression of Possession

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHuman thought and action is fundamentally shaped by a small set of cognitive categories, such as time, space, causality, or possession. It is not surprising, therefore, that all natural languages have developed many devices to express these categories. Temporality, for example, is reflected in the lexical meaning of verbs, in grammatical marking of tense and aspect, in time adverbials, in special particles, and in the application of discourse principles. Many of these devices have been the subject of intensive research across languages; but as a rule, this research focuses on particular aspects, it does not look at the expression of such a category as a whole, which is precisely the aim of the present series. The short volumes bring together what is known about the expression of a particular category in human language.

  • De Gruyter Pragmatics and Corpus Linguistics: A Mutualistic Entente

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe recent history of linguistics has witnessed the development of some disciplines that were conceived apart but benefited from common intuitions. One example of this phenomenon is the relationship established throughout time between pragmatics and corpus linguistics. Although their arrival heralded the application of two paradigms based on distant theoretical principles, they always showed an interest in their mutual advances and their practical reconciliation gave birth to an intellectual synergy that proved very fruitful. The present volume is an homage to the symbiosis of pragmatics and corpus linguistics and gathers the works of some of the scholars that have striven to create the liaison between them for a better understanding of language.

  • De Gruyter Semiotics at the Circus

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSemiotics is long on theoretical, often obscure discourses, but short on applications that demonstrate with clarity the applicability of its methods. This book confronts a challenging object, the circus, and endeavors to describe its performances in ways that explain how circus acts produce meaning and cause a deep emotional involvement for their audiences. The approach is not top-down, such as would be a method that would dogmatically apply a particular theory to fully explain the phenomena in terms of this theory alone. Epistemologically, this book is an example of the bottom-up strategy, which consists of considering first the objects and heuristically calling upon methodological resources in a broad theoretical array to come to grips with the problems that are encountered. Any circus act is a complex event that has cognitive and emotional dimensions. It is also a part of a history and an institution, and cannot be abstracted from its cultural and sociological contexts. Thus the range of relevant theoretical and methodological approaches must include structural semiotics, biosemiotics, pragmatics, socio-semiotics, cultural anthropology, the cognitive sciences, the psychology and sociology of emotions, to name only the most important. But the ultimate focus of this book is to enable the readers to better understand the meaning of circus performances and to appreciate the skills and creativity of this traditional popular art, which constantly renews itself from generation to generation.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book presents new issues and areas of work in modality and evidentiality in English(es), and in relation to other European languages (French, Galician, Lithuanian, Spanish). Given the complexity of the relations among modal and evidential expressions, their constant diachronic evolution, and the variation found in different English-speaking areas, and in different genres and discourse domains, the volume addresses the following issues: the conceptual nature of modality, the relationship between the domains of modality and evidentiality, the evolution and current status of the modal auxiliaries and other modal expressions, the relationship with neighbouring grammatical categories (tense, aspect, mood), and the variation in different discourse domains and genres, in modelling stance and discourse identities.

  • De Gruyter The MIHI EST construction: An instance of

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the Romanian mihi est construction (Mi-e foame/frică, me.dat = is hunger/fear ‘I am hungry/ afraid’). While it disappeared from all other Romance languages to be replaced with a habeo structure, the mihi est pattern is in Romanian the most common way of expressing psychological or physiological states. By means of synchronic and diachronic corpus studies, the book investigates the status of the core arguments of the mihi est structure, i.e. the dative experiencer and the nominative state noun, as well as its evolution throughout the centuries. The data analysis reveals that the dative experiencer syntactically behaves like nominative subjects, whereas the state noun shows predicate behavior. As for the evolution of the mihi est structure, the analysis shows a certain tendency toward innovation, since in present-day Romanian it can coerce nouns coming from other semantic fields into the construction’s psychological or physiological interpretation. Could this be another unique trait of Romanian, which causes it to seemingly go against the tendency of most Romance languages toward canonical marking of core arguments?

  • De Gruyter New Directions in Second Language Pragmatics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNew Directions in Second Language Pragmatics brings together varying perspectives in second language (L2) pragmatics to show both historical developments in the field, while also looking towards the future, including theoretical, empirical, and implementation perspectives. This volume is divided in four sections: teaching and learning speech acts, assessing pragmatic competence, analyzing discourses in digital contexts, and current issues in L2 pragmatics. The chapters focus on various aspects related to the learning, teaching, and assessing of L2 pragmatics and cover a range of learning environments. The authors address current topics in L2 pragmatics such as: speech acts from a discursive perspective; pragmatics instruction in the foreign language classroom and during study abroad; assessment of pragmatic competence; research methods used to collect pragmatics data; pragmatics in computer-mediated contexts; the role of implicit and explicit knowledge; discourse markers as a resource for interaction; and the framework of translingual practice. Taken together, the chapters in this volume foreground innovations and new directions in the field of L2 pragmatics while, at the same time, ground their work in the existing literature. Consequently, this volume both highlights where the field of L2 pragmatics has been and offers cutting-edge insights into where it is going in the future.

  • De Gruyter Tastes We Live By: The Linguistic Conceptualisation of Taste in English

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTaste is considered one of the lowest sensory modalities, and the most difficult to express in language. Recently, an increasing body of research in perception language and in Food Studies has been sparkling new interest and new perspectives on the importance of this sense. Merging anthropology, evolutionary physiology and philosophy, this book investigates the language of Taste in English, and its relationship with our embodied minds. In the first part of the book, the author explores the semantic dimensions of Taste terms with a usage-based approach. With the application of experimental protocols, Bagli enquires their possible organization in a radial network and calculates the Salience index of gustatory terms in both American and British English. The second part of the book is an overview of the metaphorical extensions that motivate the polysemy of Taste terms, with the aid of corpus analysis methods and various texts. This book is the first to review systematically and in a usage-based perspective the role of the sensory domain of Taste in English, showing a more complicated picture and suggesting that its under-representation and difficulty of encoding does not correspond to lack of importance.

  • De Gruyter Trends in South Asian Linguistics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe field of South Asian linguistics has undergone considerable growth and advancement in recent years, as a wider and more diverse range of languages have become subject to serious linguistic study, and as advancements in theoretical linguistics are applied to the rich linguistic data of South Asia. In this growth and diversity, it can be difficult to retain a broad grasp on the current state of the art, and to maintain a sense of the underlying unity of the field. This volume brings together twenty articles by leading scholars in South Asian linguistics, which showcase the cutting-edge research currently being undertaken in the field, and offer the reader a comprehensive introduction to the state of the art in South Asian linguistics. The contributions to the volume focus primarily on syntax and semantics, but also include important contributions on morphological and phonological questions. The contributions also cover a wide range of languages, from well-studied Indo-Aryan languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi, Bangla and Panjabi, through Dravidian languages to endangered and understudied Tibeto-Burman languages. This collection is a must-read for all scholars interested in current trends and advancements in South Asian linguistics.

  • De Gruyter A Dictionary of Austronesian Monosyllabic Roots (Submorphemes)

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book documents an understudied phenomenon in Austronesian languages, namely the existence of recurrent submorphemic sound-meaning associations of the general form -CVC. It fills a critical gap in scholarship on these languages by bringing together a large body of data in one place, and by discussing some of the theoretical issues that arise in analyzing this data. Following an introduction which presents the topic, it includes a critical review of the relevant literature over the past century, and discussions of the following: 1. problems in finding the root (the "needle in the haystack" problem), 2. root ambiguity, 3. controls on chance as an interfering factor, 4. unrecognized morphology as a possible factor in duplicating evidence, 5. the shape/structure of the root, 6. referents of roots, 7. the origin of roots, 8. the problem of distinguishing false cognates produced by convergence in root-bearing morphemes from legitimate comparisons resulting from divergent descent, and 9. the problem of explaining how submorphemes are transmitted across generations of speakers independently of the morphemes that host them. The remainder of the book consists of a list of sources for the 197 languages from which data is drawn, followed by the roots with supporting evidence, a short appendix, and references.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisKonrad Zuse is one of the great pioneers of the computer age. He created thefirst fully automated, program controlled, freely programmable computer using binary floating-point calculation. It was operational in 1941. He built his first machines in Berlin during the Second World War, with bombs falling all around, and after the war he built up a company that was taken over by Siemens in 1967. Zuse was an inventor in the traditional style, full of phantastic ideas, but also gifted with a powerful analytical mind. Single-handedly, he developed one of the first programming languages, the Plan Calculus, including features copied only decades later in other languages. He wrote numerousbooks and articles and won many honors and awards. This is his autobiography, written in an engagingly lively and pleasant style, full of anecdotes, reminiscences, and philosophical asides. It traces his life from his childhood in East Prussia, through tense wartime experiences and hard times building up his business after the war, to a ripe old age andwell-earned celebrity.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The book tells the story of an inventor and an entrepreneur. It is refreshing because it allows one to see things outside of the box, beyond the more traditional story, so that he or she can better appreciate key aspects of computing and computation. Furthermore, the book tells the story of a father, a hard worker, and a recognized inventor, including pictures and plenty of anecdotes. … The book is probably the only reliable source about Konrad Zuse’s life and contributions to the world.” (Hector Zenil, ACM Computing Reviews, November, 2011)Table of Contents1 Ancestors and parents — Early childhood memories — School days — Metropolis — Abitur.- 2 Studies (not without detours and by-ways) and general studies — First inventions — The Akademischer Verein Motiv — Student life between science and politics.- 3 The early years of the computer (and a digression on its prehistory) — Colleagues remember — From mechanics to electromechanics — Schreyer’s electronic computing machine — First outside contacts — Thoughts on the future.- 4 Outbreak of the war and (first) call-up — Structural engineer in aircraft construction — The Z2 and Z3 — Second call-up — Zuse Ingenieurbüro und Apparatebau, Berlin — The first process computer.- 5 Origins of the Z4 — News from the United States — Attempt at a Ph.D. dissertation — Computing machine for logic operations — Final months of the war in Berlin — The evacuation — Z4 completed in Göttingen — Final war days in the Allgäu.- 6 End of the war — Refugees in Hinterstein — The Plankalkül — The computing universe — Automation and self-reproducing systems — A logarithmic computing machine — Computer development in Germany and the United States — Move to Hopferau near Füssen — The mill of the Patent Office.- 7 The Zuse-Ingenieurbüro, Hopferau bei Füssen — First business partners: IBM and Remington Rand — The first pipelining design — Founding of ZUSE KG in Neukirchen — The Z4 in the ETH in Zurich — The computer in Europe: taking stock — Lost opportunities — The first German contract: the Z5.- 8 The partners leave — Computing machine for land use zoning — Electronics gains acceptance — First funds from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft — Losing one’s way (and possibly a lost opportunity) — The array processor — Custom work for geodesists — The Graphomat Z64 — Growth and crisis of ZUSE KG — The end.- 9 Free for science (again) — Honors — A look to the future.- Appendices.- 1. Book SynopsisAn interdisciplinary study of issues of language manipulation, this book explores the interpretation stage of critical discourse analysis (CDA) for students in areas such as English language, media studies and applied linguistics, as well as practitioners in the field. It also offers a new way forward for highlighting manipulative language, accomplishing this through the innovation of a model of reading for gist. The model is an original synthesis of elements from four contemporary cognitive frameworks: connectionism, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistic evidence on inference generation, and relevance theory. Significantly, Kieran O''Halloran also shows how each of these frameworks challenges current notions of cognition in CDA and he carefully works through the implications of this for how CDA highlights manipulative language.Table of ContentsTable of Contents: Introduction; SECTION A: THE INTERPRETATION STAGE IN CDA; 1. Book SynopsisExamining recent changes in the once stable genre of doctoral thesis and dissertation writing, this book explores how these changes impact on the nature of the doctoral thesis/dissertation itself. Covering different theories of genre, Brian Paltridge and Sue Starfield focus on the concepts of evolution, innovation and emergence in the context of the production and reception of doctoral theses and dissertations. Specifically concerned with this genre in the humanities, social sciences and visual and performing arts, this book also investigates the forces which are shaping changes in this high-stakes genre, as well as those which act as constraints. Employing textography as its methodological approach, the book provides multiple perspectives on the ways in which doctoral theses and dissertations are subject to forces of continuity and change in the academy. Analyses of the new humanities' doctorate, professional doctorates, practice-based doctorates, and the doctorate bTrade ReviewThis is a book that should be of interest to anyone seeking an in-depth understanding of the moving target we call the PhD thesis/dissertation genre in all its rapidly morphing, increasingly multimodal, disciplinarily diverse and complex manifestations. -- Diane D. Book SynopsisHoward Jackson is Emeritus Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the School of English at Birmingham City University, UK.Trade ReviewAn enormously valuable and instructive starting point for research into lexicography and meta-lexicography; the contributions include helpful and detailed examples, and the relatively compact size of each paper makes the book particularly manageable for students and other researchers. * The Year's Work in English Studies (of the first edition) *A strong catalyst for lexicographers of every stripe. It presents contemporary research, summarized for review at a readable scale, with the happy outcome that both specialists and new researchers may reach a clearly contextualized understanding of the trajectories of sub-fields other than their own. * Kernerman Dictionary News (of the first edition) *This volume is useful for students who know little about lexicography, or for professors who use lexicons consistently and want to become more aware of the issues involved in approaching them. * Exegetical Tools Quarterly (of the first edition) *Beautifully edited and organized. * SKY Journal of Linguistics (of the first edition) *An excellent resource that I would strongly recommend for students of lexicography and practitioners alike ... This new edition is a valid and valuable contribution to the library of lexicographic research. * Lexikos *The new Bloomsbury Handbook to Lexicography provides students and researchers with a comprehensive and highly accessible overview of a field that has changed dramatically over the last decades. The 25 chapters and more than 800 pages, written by leading dictionary experts from all over the world, are focused on the key issues of dictionary writing and research, and explore the many questions that lexicographers have to solve and metalexicographers to assess. -- Henri Béjoint, Emeritus Professor, University Lyon 2, FranceHoward Jackson has designed the quintessential handbook for insights into dictionary research and metalexicography. Book SynopsisJohn Burt Foster, Jr., is University Professor of English and Cultural Studies at George Mason University, USA. He is the author of Heirs to Dionysus: A Nietzschean Current in Literary Modernism (Princeton University Press, 1981) and Nabokov's Art Memory and European Modernism (Princeton University Press, 1993) and the editor, with Wayne J. Froman, of Dramas of Culture: Theory, History, Performance (Lexington Books, 2008). He is the past editor of The Comparatist and of Recherche littéraire / Literary Research, the journal of the International Comparative Literature Association.Trade ReviewTransnational Tolstoy is a welcome and groundbreaking addition to Tolstoy studies, and to the transnational reading of Russian literature generally … In this rewarding volume, John Burt Foster has updated and extended the exhausted genres of ‘Tolstoy and the West’ and ‘Tolstoy and World Literature.’ … Transnational Tolstoy provokes consideration … and plays an exemplary role in opening Tolstoy’s complex position ‘between the west and the world’ to new and productive approaches. -- William Nickell, University of Chicago * Slavic and East European Journal *Transnational Tolstoy is unlike any other current work on Tolstoi today. It provides a refreshing and thought-provoking look at one of the major figures of Russian literature and the dialogues he inspired and initiated around the globe. -- Justin Weir, Harvard University * Slavic Review *Foster ... clearly has a gift for condensing his arguments into self-contained, well-expressed units. He also writes with a stylistic finesse and an apparent aversion to generating critical antipathy; his focus is always on saying things as well and persuasively as possible. Judging by his wide cultural knowledge, refined style, and pleasing attitude, he could have been a diplomat. * Cambridge Quarterly Review *Foster's book is a laudable venture into a new critical method of reading great fiction transnationally ... [He] works with splendid erudition and ingenuity ... [to provide] a refreshing and welcome method of reading and understanding Tolstoi. * Modern Language Review *Transnational Tolstoy is a tour de force of old-fashioned comparative literature, taking in, as it does, such a wide selection of authors from such a wide selection of cultures and nations. * The European Legacy *Foster's engaging study makes a crucial point: that, far from being a monologist or solipsist or hegemonic universalist, Tolstoi developed an ever more nuanced recognition of the incredibly complex interplay of different influences on which any cultural product must depend . . . To have returned this magnificently plural Tolstoi to us, as Foster has in lucid and mercifully jargon-free prose, is a substantial achievement. -- Jeff Love, Clemson University, US * Slavonic and East European Review *I immensely enjoyed reading John Burt Foster's Transnational Tolstoy, a monumental work that puts Tolstoy at the very heart of world literature, relating his work, and especially War and Peace, Anna Karenina and Hadji Murad, to that of immediate predecessors such as Stendhal, contemporaries like Flaubert, and successors including Malraux and Lampedusa, Premchand and Mahfouz. Fully informed by the most recent thinking on comparative and world literature, yet always wearing its learning lightly, Transnational Tolstoy stands as a guide and an inspiration for literary scholars worldwide. -- Theo D'haen, Professor of English & Comparative Literature, University of Leuven, Belgium, and author of The Routledge Concise History of World LiteratureIn Transnational Tolstoy: Between the West and the World John Burt Foster, Jr., offers a new framework for reading the works of Lev Tolstoy. Often viewed as one of the pillars of 'western' literature, Tolstoy’s works now receive a thorough consideration from a fresh perspective, defining Tolstoy’s art through the concepts of 'transnational' writing and 'global' literature. Foster uses these concepts effectively to open up intriguing sides of Tolstoy’s art and to encourage readers to think differently about Tolstoy. Foster probes the middle-aged and aged Tolstoy’s views of himself as non-Western. Finally, he investigates the ways in which twentieth-century non-Western writers of various stylistic bents—modernist, postmodernist, and postcolonial; imagist and magical realist—have engaged with Tolstoy’s art. The result is a stimulating read for literary scholars and the educated public alike. -- Edith W. Clowes, Brown-Forman Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Virginia, USA, and author of Russia on the Edge: Imagined Geographies and Post-Soviet IdentityTransnational Tolstoy is a consistently illuminating and lucidly written examination of Tolstoy as a central figure in the fluid movement of culture around the world. More broadly, this wonderful book is also a methodologically innovative, provocative, and inspiring example of how to conduct literary study in the twenty-first century. -- Vladimir Alexandrov, B. E.
