Every few days there are reports of another tragedy, of more lives lost to gun violence, loved ones and family homes lost to floods, hurricanes, or fires. Women have come to speak openly about the trauma of sexual assault, and we are finally talking openly about the trauma inflicted on people of colour, on transgender people, and immigrants. But now that this trauma is out in the open, how do we heal? For years, we've understood the connection between trauma and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. The mind-body approach in this book is designed to guide you away from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma and toward posttraumatic growth. Turner Publishing Company The New Smart: How Nurturing Creativity Will Help
Book SynopsisWho will thrive in the year 2050? The New Smart is a riveting study of the kinds of minds that will succeed in the 21st century. As it turns out, the key ingredient for all aspects of life is not traditional IQ but creativity. In Dr. Terry Roberts’ newest book he presents readers with a 21st century exploration into intelligence and creativity. The New Smart argues that the old notion of intelligence as a static quotient has ceased to mean much of value. Being smart, especially as it’s related to test scores and school grades, has less and less to do with success in contemporary life. Both these words and the ideas they represent are worn out. Our new age demands something much more fluid, much more resilient—much more creative. In this book, we ask who will thrive in the future? And by reframing the question, we arrive at the following profile of successful creators: • They will blend multiple intelligences in a way that might be described as synthetic or even symphonic • They will be ambitious and focused without being self-obsessed • They will value asynchrony and even seek it out • They will use their own marginality to generate novel perspective and new work • They will exhibit a steadfast resilience in all phases of life • They will be measured by what they produce over the course of their lives, not by any static notion of capacity or quotient The New Smart asks how we re-train ourselves and educate our children for a life that demands such creativity. It provides a clear roadmap away from standardized schools producing standardized minds and describes in detail why creative is The New Smart.Trade ReviewTerry Roberts offers educators and the schools they love a road map away from the standardized testing for standardized minds agenda. Using both research on cognitive development and examples from actual schools, accessible to parents, educators, and even students, this volume should become an owner's manual for the schools we need both today and tomorrow.—George Wood, author of Schools That Work

G&D Media Poetry Rx: How 50 Inspiring Poems Can Heal and
Book Synopsis'I used to believe that poetry did not speak to me, but I now see how wrong I was. I lived for 44 years with a husband, a lyricist, whose beautifully crafted, heartfelt lyrics touched my every fiber and continue to uplift and inspire me a decade after his death. The special beauty of Dr. Rosenthal's book for me is his discussion of what each poem is saying, what the poet was likely feeling and often how the poems helped him personally, as when he left his birth family in South Africa for a rewarding career in the United States.' - Jane Brody, Author & New York Times ColumnistPoetry to Heal, Inspire and EnjoyPoetry Rx presents 50 great poems as seen through the eyes of a renowned psychiatrist and New York Times bestseller. In this book, you will find insights into love, sorrow, ecstasy and everything in between: Love in the moment or for a lifetime; love that is fulfilling or addictive; when to break up and how to survive when someone breaks up with you.Separate sections deal with responses to the natural world, and the varieties of human experience (such as hope, reconciliation, leaving home, faith, self-actualization, trauma, anger, and the thrill of discovery). Other sections involve finding your way in the world and the search for meaning, as well as the final stages of life.In describing this multitude of human experiences, using vignettes from his work and life, Rosenthal serves as a comforting guide to these poetic works of genius. Through his writing, the workings of the mind, as depicted by these gifted writers speak to us as intimately as our closest friends.Rosenthal also delves into the science of mind and brain. Who would have thought, for example, that listening to poetry can cause people to have goosebumps by activating the reward centers of the brain? Yet research shows that to be true. And who were these fascinating poets? In a short biosketch that accompanies each poem, Rosenthal draws connections between the poets and their poems that help us understand the enigmatic minds that gave birth to these masterworks. Altogether, a fulfilling and intriguing must-read for anyone interested in poetry, the mind, self-help and genius.CONTENTSIntroductionPART ONELoving and LosingChapter OneIs There an Art to Losing? One Art by Elizabeth BishopChapter TwoCan Love Transform You?How do I love thee? It all started with a single phone call that came in late one night. The caller was my friend David, and I knew immediately by the tone of his voice that something was wrong. He choked up as he told me that he had recently lost someone very dear to him. How can I go on? he mused. How will I manage? Clichés and generalities readily come to mind in such situations, but I searched for something specific to say, something that might actually help. Recognizing that David is a person steeped in the arts, I said, There is an art to losing, and like all art, it can be developed. He was silent for a while, and when he spoke again, his voice sounded more cheerful, as though he had tapped into some hidden source of hope. . Do you know the poem One Art' by Elizabeth Bishop? he asked. I told him no. Well, let me read it to you, and he began: The art of losing isn't hard to master.' As he read on, his voice gathered strength and energy with each stanza. Afterwards his mood was lighterand strangely, so was mine. . Can a poem really help a grieving person? I wondered, and if so, might other poems also have healing powers? I marveled also at how David had reached into the depths of his grief and presented me with a gifta poem that offered me a fresh perspective on how to help someone out of the darkness that can engulf you when you lose someone you love. I shared the poem with patients and friends, many of whom found comfort in its words, and looked for o

G&D Media Essentials of Emotional Intelligence
Book SynopsisIn Essentials of Emotional Intelligence, Dr. John Demartini puts into perspective how your perceptions affect your reality and why Emotional Intelligence is so important in the achievement of your goals and dreams.Your emotions are likely based on previous experiences, the subordination to outside ideals and norms that you’re “supposed” to live by, your own personal experiences, the fantasy you have made about your life that you dream about that may not even be real, and the real objectives that you hold inside of you.Emotional Intelligence is the ability to perceive and interpret the reality of life; respond accordingly with the various well-governed emotions; and measure, manage and use those reasonable emotions for communication, leadership, social development, and more. You must be able to monitor and govern both your perceptions and actions and keep them balanced. The ancient hermetic teaching said that spirit without matter is expressionless and matter without spirit is emotionless. Matter itself, deals with emotions and spirit itself is unconditional love. Love is not just happiness, love is attraction and repulsion. I like you. I dislike you. Emotions are either positively or negatively charged, such as happiness and sadness, elation and depression, infatuation and resentment. Learn how: Your emotions and subconsciously stored impulses and instincts about something when you’re five years old can still run your life 55 years later To equilibrate your emotions to liberate you from subjective bias and get to the truth You can manage your responses to people or events so you are able to master your life To maximize your communication skills, business opportunities, income, and relationship dynamics It’s time to master The Essentials of Emotional Intelligence.
