Lexington Books Perspectives on Jewish Music
Book SynopsisPerspectives on Jewish Music presents five unique and engaging explorations of Jewish music. Areas covered include self-expression in contemporary Jewish secular music, the rise of popular music in the American synagogue, the theological requirements of the cantor, the role of women in Sephardic music and society, and the personal reflections of a leading figure in American synagogue music. Its wide-ranging topics and disciplinary approaches give evidence for the centrality of music in Jewish religious and secular life, and demonstrate that Jewish music is as diverse as the Jews themselves. From these studies, readers will gain an appreciation of both what Jewish music is and what it does. This book will be useful for students, practitioners, and scholars of Jewish secular and religious music and Jewish cultural studies, as well as ethnomusicologists specializing in Jewish or religious music.Trade ReviewThe diversity of subjects addressed in the book's rich bibliography of mostly English-language sources on music in Jewish culture further emphasizes the difficulty of coming to a useful definition of 'Jewish music.' -- Joshua Walden * Musica Judaica Online Reviews, February 2010 *Perspectives on Jewish Music gives voice to a diverse choir of intellectual, passionate, original and committed approaches in exploring what is Jewish and what exactly is musical about Jewish Music. Friedmann demonstrates that the Jewish mouth sings colorful tones on many coasts, in various guises and genres—always surprising and thoughtful while all the while broadening an already supple tradition. -- Rabbi Neil F. Rlpg/Galleys Urban God Talk
Book SynopsisUrban God Talk: Constructing a Hip Hop Spirituality, edited by Andre Johnson, is a collection of essays that examine the religious and spiritual in hip hop. The contributors argue that the prevailing narrative that hip hop offers nothing in the way of religion and spirituality is false. From its beginning, hip hop has had a profound spirituality and advocates religious viewsand while not orthodox or systemic, nevertheless, many in traditional orthodox religions would find the theological and spiritual underpinnings in hip hop comforting, empowering, and liberating. In addition, this volume demonstrates how scholars in different disciplines approach the study of hip hop, religion, and spirituality. Whether it is a close reading of a hip hop text, ethnography, a critical studies approach or even a mixed method approach, this study is a pedagogical tool for students and scholars in various disciplines to use and appropriate for their own research and understanding. Urban God Talk will inspTrade ReviewJohnson’s efforts to promote ongoing dialogue between religious expressions and the ever-expanding cultural force of hip hop are laudable and useful for their interdisciplinary reach beyond religious and theological studies. This book is a valuable read for laity, students, and scholars alike that promises to make a robust contribution to the diversity of intellectual resources in the burgeoning area of religion in hip hop studies. -- Monica R. Miller, Lehigh University; author of Religion and Hip HopThe scholarly study of hip hop and spirituality is strong and growing. Urban God Talk: Constructing a Hip Hop Spirituality adds a serious and much needed anthology to this field of study. What Dr. Johnson has done is essentially capture cutting edge research and help the field rise to new levels of thought and scholarship. What Dr. Johnson has here is a canon for a stronger understanding of hip hop and spirituality. Rlpg/Galleys Social Functions of Synagogue Song
Book SynopsisSocial Functions of Synagogue Song: A Durkheimian Approach by Jonathan L. Friedmann paints a detailed picture of the important role sacred music plays in Jewish religious communities. This study explores one possible way to approach the subject of music's intimate connection with public worship: applying sociologist Émile Durkeim's understanding of ceremonial ritual to synagogue music. Durkheim observed that religious ceremonies serve disciplinary, cohesive, revitalizing, and euphoric functions within religious communities. Drawing upon musical examples from different composers, regions, periods, rites, and services, Friedmann demonstrates how Jewish sacred music performs these functions.Trade ReviewThe study of synagogue ritual and prayer has been dominated by research into historical origins and textual traditions. Friedmann adds a distinctive lens by analyzing synagogue rituals using sociological theory. He thereby provides insights into the social impact of 'praying' making a vital contribution to the understanding of praying and the roles and meanings for prayer leaders and congregants. -- Joel Gereboff, Arizona State UniversityIn this wide ranging and deeply sourced study, Jonathan Friedmann displays both an erudition of knowledge and a passionate commitment to Jewish sacred music that will inform and inspire readers. Friedmann's lucid prose, obvious expertise in the Cantorate, and comprehensive understanding of Durkheim's religious theory further enhances the very substantial value of this unique volume. -- Brad Stetson, California State University, Long BeachJonathan L. Friedmann's work is thoroughly researched, abundantly illustrated, and convincing. As a cantor, Friedmann provides a unique and valuable perspective that few scholars can begin to approach. More importantly, he offers a creative and engaging look at the communal functions of synagogue song and, at the same time, also offers readers a wider comparative application of his four functional categories across religions and cultures. -- Jon R. Lexington Books The Art of Avaz and Mohammad Reza Shajarian
Book SynopsisThe Art of Avaz and Mohammad Reza Shajarian: Foundations and Contexts, by Rob Simms and Amir Koushkani, examines the traditional art of singing classical Persian poetry, as represented by its greatest living exponent. This in-depth study surveys the social and historical context of the twentieth-century tradition of avaz while placing Shajarian's early career within this complex culture, from being a child prodigy of Qur'an recitation in Mashhad to his rise to national prominence in the 1970s. As a globetrotting celebrity who is renowned for singing medieval poetry with impeccable technique and radiant inspiration, Shajarian's life and work provide a compelling case study for larger issues of reconciling tradition and modernity, and the crucial role of the individual in maintaining and renovating traditional art forms. Avaz is discussed in the broader context of Iranian narrative performance traditions, where the performer retells well-known scripts in a way that is appropriate to the Trade ReviewThis book is a welcome addition to the literature, presenting the narrative of Iranian classical music through the life and music of one of its foremost practitioners. Simms and Koushkani have adopted a novel approach, presenting extended sections in Shajarian’s own ‘voice’ and weaving this into the scholarly exegesis to create an artful polyphony. -- Laudan Nooshin, City University LondonThe Art of Avaz and Mohammad Reza Shajarian is an indispensable scientific work for gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between song, poetry, and vocal art, regardless of culture. It is a captivating means of accessing Persian culture through one of its most eminent representatives, who has dedicated his life to the cult of beauty and engaged in the defense of human values. The rigor and the richness of Simms’ and Koushkani’s method, which contributes techniques for future publications, rests on a 'trialogue' between an exceptional master, a chosen disciple, and a fine connoisseur. Throughout the pages, these three roles merge to weave a passionate story, rich in teachings. -- Jean During, French National Center for Scientific ResearchThis is a significant work not only for those interested in Persian music but also for those wishing to understand the culture of Iran in the last one hundred years, and for music scholars focusing on a world perspective of improvisation, musical education, and culture change. As a long-time student of Persian music, I very much welcome this excellent addition to the literature. -- Bruno Nettl, University of IllinoisTable of ContentsPreface Chapter 1: Before Coming In (Pishdaramad) Chapter 2: Mashhad Roots Chapter 3: To Tehran Chapter 4: Performing Avaz Appendices Glossary Bibliography Index About the Authors

Lexington Books Political Melodies in the Pews The Voice of the
Book SynopsisIn this fascinating study of contemporary Christian worshippers, David L. Moody analyzes Christian rap music against traditional Christian theology. For many, mixing the sanctified worship of God with music originating from unconsecrated avenues has become difficult to accept. From the back alleys and streets of the hood to the club scene of urban America, Christian rappers walk to a different beat than the preacher at the pulpit. However, similar to a street evangelist, the Black Christian rapper is about singing praise to God and delivering the gospel message to his lost homies on the streets. Moody examines the emergence of hip hop based ministries and their place among youth with the Black community.Trade ReviewIn Political Melodies in the Pews?, Moody opens the door for us to examine an understudied subject, and he has raised poignant questions to consider. As Christian music continues to play an important role as part of the worship service in Black churches across the United States, studies such as these are important contributions to better understanding cultural practices within these and similar communities. * Journal of American Culture *This is a wonderful reference for readers who seek clarity on the purpose of Christian hip-hop. Moody’s own belief is made evident in the first pages and . . . is the book’s driving force. * The Journal Of Religion *David Moody examines the relationship between contemporary black Christian rap/hip hop and black liberation theology. This topic is fascinating to me and caused me to think “why didn’t I think of that?!” It is interesting how he draws parallels between the themes in the lyrics of antebellum and postbellum black spirituals with the themes in contemporary black Christian hip hop rap songs. I believe Political Melodies in the Pews? is just the kind of scholarship to extend the current analyses regarding theology, popular culture, African American studies, and hip hop culture. -- Angela Nelson, Bowling Green State UniversityFrom the street demonstrations of the Civil Rights Movement, to the ideological struggles of black theology and black power, the black church has always sought a contemporary way in which to give voice to the meaning of the faith. With the rise of hip-hop as both a musical and cultural phenomenon the same issues arise; how do you present a changeless gospel to a fast- changing world. This book takes us into the world and work of black Christian rappers. Their melodies and methods may be different, but the intention is still focused on how to reach the masses. -- Marvin A. University of Toronto Press Prions en Chantant
Book SynopsisThe rich medieval French tradition of vernacular devotional songs has not received much scrutiny. With 'Prions en chantant', Marcia Epstein aims to remedy that situation by offering an edition of largely anonymous trouvère devotional songs, designed for both scholars and performers, from two late-thirteenth-century manuscripts. The majority of the music is published here for the first time. Sixty-one songs are presented, with forty-nine songs exhibited in Old French with a facing-page modern English translation followed by old musical notation and facing-page with modern musical transcription. An additional twelve songs, which lack music in the original sources, are represented by the Old French text and the modern English translation only. The introduction extensively describes the social, musical, literary and theological aspects of the trouvère songs contained in the volume. This is a valuable and welcome addition to the study of medieval music.
