An ecosystem, not a still life.'' Written with effervescent charm and professional knowledge, composer and conductor Andrew Gant reveals the fascinating musical and social history behind our favourite Christmas carols. From the Annunciation to Epiphany, the episodes of the Christmas story link the tales and anecdotes behind twenty-seven carols from a variety of traditions and places of origin: those that come from folk song; those we owe to Victorian moralists, and those that are, in fact, French. • Poems from the Soul

University of Wales Press Poems from the Soul

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisEven as many in the modern world draw away from organised religion, the great hymns of our time persist: we turn to them at weddings and funerals, at rugby matches and in pubs. Bringing together twelve of Wales's best-loved hymns, from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, Poems from the Soul reveals the heart and soul of a people's poetry. These are the poems of ordinary folk blacksmiths, farmers and preachers and they played a vital role in the creation of the Welsh people. Ranging from the visionary intensity of Ann Griffiths to the striking biblical imagery of Wales's unofficial national anthem, Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer', in every hymn a single, singular voice sings out, loud and strong with fear, hope, ecstasy or anxiety. With original illustrations by Ruth Jên Evans throughout, this collection offers insights into the making of a modern nation and demonstrates the transformative power of voices raised in song.

Faber Music Ltd The Faber Music Christmas Piano Anthology

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Faber Music Christmas Piano Anthology is an essential collection of the greatest Christmas songs and carols, specially arranged for solo piano, for the intermediate pianist.Trade Review"I have recommended it to six of my students in the three days since the review copy arrived, which is unprecedented. And I anticipate that many more of my students will be enjoying this book in their lessons, home playing, and at my regular adult piano club for years to come. What impresses most of all is that all of the arrangements are both pianistic and genuinely musical. As such, and given the scope and scale of the book, The Faber Music Christmas Piano Anthology is not only a stunning success, but fills a unique spot on the music shelf. This is a book which has significantly raised the bar, instantly establishing itself as the new “must-have” Christmas music book. I predict it will sell like hot cakes (or artisan mince pies?) and it certainly deserves to – it’s absolutely brilliant! Outstanding." Andrew Eales, pianodao.com, October 2018 "Overall, it is very well-presented, and the music clearly laid out and typeset. I would suggest that the majority of the pieces in this volume will suit pianists at Grade 4 and above, and with such a wealth of material included, this book will last pianists for many years to come. Faber are quite right to describe it as ‘timeless’. It is excellent value for money, and a must-have for pianists this Christmas." Oxford University Press Gloria

    2 in stock

Book Synopsisfor SATB and brass ensemble or full orchestraGloria was written in 1974 in response to a commission from The Voices of Mel Olson, a choir based in the USA. The division of the work into three movements â respectively proclamatory, prayerful, and joyfully affirmative â corresponds to the divisions in the text. Most of the melodic material derives from a Gregorian chant associated with this text.An accompaniment for orchestra without organ is also available.Full scores, vocal scores, and instrumental parts are available on hire. The first movement of Gloria is available separately under the title Gloria 1.Trade Reviewsits happily in the repertoire of almost any sized choir. Dating from 1974, it remains one of his most popular works. The two outer movements are gloriously bright, while the quieter middle section is more gentle. Once again, choirs love to sing this music, and audiences seldom fail to respond to it. * BBC Music Magazine Nov 97 *

  • The Oxford Book of Easy Flexible Anthems

Oxford University Press The Oxford Book of Easy Flexible Anthems

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis collection caters for church choirs of all types and sizes and presents flexibility of scoring in a constructive and realistic way, with particular provision for unison or two-part singing, while not forgetting SATB choirs, and a focus on ease of learning and performance. With complete coverage of the Church's year, this is a vital resource for all church choirs.Trade ReviewIt is an excellent collection of 66 anthems suitable for the church choir that wants to sing anthems regularly but may sometimes struggle to have a balanced number of parts. Most of these pieces can be sung effectively in unison, and all have suggestions for performance by varied ensembles, so some are most effective as two-part pieces, others SATB or SAB. For church choirs with limited rehearsal time, this book will be valuable. With this collection, you don't have to abandon a particular anthem when your only tenor is away. Flexibility allows omitting or rearranging parts without sacrificing the integrity of the composition. * Part 1 of review by Gordon Appleton, www.rscm.com, June 2017 *OUP has a great advantage in that it has been able to trawl through its many past publications and reuse them (sometimes in new arrangements) here . . . As editor, composer and arranger, [Alan Bullard] has ensured that what is provided here is both practical and accessible, yet of good quality. It contains a variety of music for the Church's year and a comprehensive liturgical and thematic index. A dedicated website, www.oup.com/flexible, allows many of the anthems to be heard in performance â a useful aid to choir directors and singers . . . This collection is wholeheartedly recommended - but if you need a copy that stays flat on the keyboard music stand, do opt for the spirally bound edition; both this and the ordinary paperback are excellent value. * Part 2 of review by Gordon Appleton, www.rscm.com, June 2017 *Composer Alan Bullard has assembled sixty-six anthems covering the entire liturgical year and representing a wide swath of traditional English choral repertoire. Selections for Evensong are also included, extending the reach of the collection . . . The result is a highly practical resource for summer choirs or for any time when there is a question as to which singers will actually show up on a Sunday morning. The adaptability of the pieces and the high quality of editorial choices make for a safe collection in less than ideal circumstances. The anthology is also available in a spiral bound edition, particularly attractive for organists and conductors. * The Journal of the Assoc. of Anglican Musicians, May 2017 *. . . the variety of performance options are all explained carefully in the preface, which also provides details of the associated web page (www.oup.com/flexible) where more details about the original format and publication of each piece are sensibly provided. * Geoffrey Webber, Church Music Quarterly, May 2017 *

  • The Gregorian Melody

    Liturgical Press The Gregorian Melody

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Gregorian Melody is a resource of music pedagogy that centers on one of the most ancient musical repertoires honored by the church and music historians. Though it may not be common to see the word expressive describing Gregorian chant, a repertoire often associated with subdued solemnity, this volume by renowned scholar and practitioner Alberto Turco includes an abundance of insights into the Gregorian art and proposes that chant is first and foremost sung prayer, an interaction of word and melody, which both include proper and appropriate expression. The material included in this resource is foundational as it lays out the elements of the Gregorian melody through a careful analysis of first principles. It will be useful as an introduction to Gregorian chant and for helping readers to understand the Gregorian melody. Readers of all levels may turn to this book to sing the liturgical chant with a deepened appreciation for the expressive power of the Trade Review"This volume is the encapsulation of decades of research, study, and teaching by one of the most brilliant minds in the field of chant. Herein, Turco has admirably compiled and expanded the most critical information any student of chant should assimilate. The text begins with an overview of the history of chant, which is both concise and informative, adding details that are not commonly known. The heart of the work focuses on chant: firstly on its text, secondly on the melody, and ultimately on the union of text and melody, which is fundamentally different from setting texts to melodies. Turco reminds us that understanding chant must start with understanding its text. This is a welcome addition to the pedagogical materials on the subject, for the study of chant melodies and especially chant rhythms, along with the ancient rhythmic signs, can only be successful if it is grounded on an understanding of the text and its particular nuances. Turco’s approach to the text, and ultimately to the wedding of text and melody, is thorough and masterful. It renders this volume an essential addition to the library of any student or teacher of chant."Edward Schaefer, President, The Collegium"We are fortunate to have this excellent translation of Alberto Turco’s The Gregorian Melody: The Expressive Power of the Word by Stephen Concordia, OSB. It is the first time that we have realized the true relationship between the neumes and the words they express. I recommend this book most highly."Ann Labounsky, Chair of Organ and Sacred Music, Duquesne UniversityTable of ContentsCONTENTS Abbreviations 9 Foreword 13 Author’s Preface 17INTRODUCTION 21 1. Anne is to be applauded for the vast amount of repertoire knowledge, thought, work and scholarship that must have gone into this huge undertaking which makes a significant contribution to the repertoire for teaching, sight-reading and performance purposes. * Andrew Fletcher, Organists' Review, February 2011 *Table of ContentsAndante ; Meditation ; Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier ; Ach, was soll ich Sunder machen? ; Air ; Musette ; Prelude ; Recit de Nazard ; The Word of God ; Warum sollt ich mich denn gramen ; Veni, veni, Emmanuel ; Slow ; Siciliana ; Da Jesus an dem Kreuze stund ; Andantino ; Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein ; Horsley ; Herzlich thut mich verlangen ; Adagio ; Contrapunct ; Andante ; Adagio ; Meditation ; Interlude ; Fughetta ; Prelude ; Cantabile ; Allegro ; Andante ; Andantino ; Fanfare ; Duo en Canon ; Ach wie nichtig, ach wie fluchtig ; Processional ; Prelude ; Air ; Larghetto ; Adagio ; Wer das Tochterlein haben wil ; Fughetta ; Diapason Movement ; Fughetta ; Offertoire ; Verso ; Trumpet Piece ; Canzonetta ; Regent Square ; Noel en Duo ; Ist mir ein fein braun Meg ; Dance ; Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr ; Joyful March ; Toccata ; Trumpet Piece ; Hornpipe ; Presto ; Treuer Gott, ich muss dir klagen ; St Anne ; Pentagram I ; Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr ; Gavotte with Variations ; Animated ; Gottes Sohn ist kommen ; Grand Jeu ; Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich hier

Book SynopsisA definitive look at how church music is changing in the 21st century. There is no lack of resources for the church musician focusing on particular skills or repertoire. But this is the first collection of essays created specifically for musicians working in parish ministry that imagines how those vocations will change along with the evolving church. Ponder Anew chronicles the rapid changes in the church music landscape in the last 20 years including the role of technology, education, relationships with clergy and choristers, and cultural presumptions. Contributors are parish musicians, professors, clergy, and bishops.Trade Review"...the collection offers a welcome invitation, as we engage with a 'new normal,' to 'ponder anew,' to take fresh stock of our aims and assumptions, and to approach this new phase of our professional life from a place of openness, still anchored in what has always been our rock: '…what the Almighty can do.'"—The Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians“Jessica Nelson masterfully achieves that for which she is uniquely gifted: hosting an honest and faithful conversation about music-making in the Church today so that, together, we might Ponder Anew the musical vocation. Book Synopsisfor SATB, accompanied and unaccompaniedTo celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Carols for Choirs 1, OUP presents a new volume in this ground-breaking series. Carols for Choirs 5 continues the tradition of its predecessors by providing a complete resource for choirs from Advent through to Epiphany. Featuring brand new carols and arrangements of classic tunes, the collection showcases the very best established and new names in choral composition today, both in the UK and world-wide.Trade ReviewWith the publication of Carols for Choirs 5 there has never been a better time to consider upgrading those worn-out green copies to shiny new gold ones . . . The collection successfully captures a balance of choral styles indicative of this decade with nothing out of place. While messrs Rutter and Willcocks are represented, nothing is reproduced from earlier volumes; CC5 represents excellent value for money. * Rupert Gough, Choir & Organ November 2011 *It is a wonderful collection: order a copy right away! * Philip Brunelle , The American Organist, December 2011 *The number of choral directors who can remember Christmas before Carols for Choirs is dwindling fast. The series was born in 1961, and fifty years on the fifth volume has appeared. Its pedigree is impeccable, and it fully maintains the high standards of its predecessors . . . This treasure chest of new and old carols should be in every choir library. If you need any further persuasion, turn to the end and play Thomas Hewitt Jones's haunting setting of What child is this? The carol is alive and well. * Rosemary Broadbent, Church Music Quarterly, December 2011 *There are some snazzy descants, which may not displace the best of Willcocks but are nice alternatives to have, and striking new versions of carols one had imagined done to death, such as Andrew Simpsons engaging take on I saw three ships. If anything, the balance by comparison with Carols 1 to 4 seems to favour new composition, with a whole fresh roster of composers brought on board there are outstanding pieces by Howard Skempton (Adam lay ybounden) and Gabriel Jackson (The Christ Child), among others . . . Carols for Choirs 5 is a high quality publication that fully maintains the standards of this illustrious series. * Matthew Greenall, Classical Music, November 2011 *Table of ContentsA Heavenly Song ; A little child there is yborn ; A Patre Unigenitus ; Adam lay ybounden ; Away in a manger (UK tune) ; Away in a manger (US tune) ; Blest Mary wanders through the thorn ; Candlelight Carol ; Carol ; Ding dong! merrily on high ; Glory to the Christ Child ; God rest you merry, gentlemen ; Good King Wenceslas ; Hark! the herald-angels sing ; Hush! my dear ; I saw a stable ; I saw three ships ; I sing of a maiden ; In dulci jubilo ; It came upon the midnight clear (UK tune) ; It came upon the midnight clear (US tune) ; Joy to the world! ; Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming ; Lullay, my liking ; My Lord has Come ; New Year ; O come, all ye faithful ; O come, O come, Emmanuel ; O little town ; Old Christmas Returned (or Hospitality Revived) ; Out of the Orient crystal skies ; Pilgrim Jesus ; Scots Nativity ; See amid the winter's snow ; Silent night ; Sussex Carol ; The Bell Carol ; The Christ-child ; The holly and the ivy ; The Sparrows' Carol ; The Virgin's Song ; There is no rose ; There is no rose ; There's a song in the air! ; This endris night ; Voices in the Mist ; Wassail ; We three kings of Orient are ; What child is this? ; While shepherds watched their flocks

Book SynopsisA new method of music theory education for undergraduate music students, Harmony, Counterpoint, Partimento is grounded in schema theory and partimento, and takes an integrated, hands-on approach to the teaching of harmony and counterpoint in today's classrooms and studios.Trade ReviewIJzerman has developed a historically informed approach to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century harmony and counterpoint, one which takes advantage of the old keyboard exercises known as partimenti. The benefits of those lessons are well known, but until now no one had put together a text that adapted them for the modern classroom. IJzerman covers the era from Bach through Brahms, provides a teacher's manual, and an extensive workbook. If you have bright students, this is the text they would want if they had the choice. * Robert O. Gjerdingen, Professor Emeritus at The School of Music, Northwestern University *Drawing on recent research on partimento and eighteenth-century schemata, IJzerman's Harmony, Counterpoint, Partimento is unlike any other textbook on the market. Its emphasis on the bass line as the driver of harmonic motion is especially praiseworthy. * Roger Graybill, New England Conservatory *Table of ContentsContents Preface Part 1 Harmony in Two and Three Parts Chapter 1 Two-Part Scale Realization 1.1 Parallel Thirds and Parallel Sixths 1.2 Alternation of Thirds and Sixths 1.3 Suspensions: Sevenths and Seconds 1.4 Alternative Voice Leading of Suspension Patterns Chapter 2 Three-Part Scale Realization 2.1 The Fauxbourdon 2.2 The Monte and the 7-6 Fauxbourdon 2.3 The Stepwise Romanesca 2.4 Fifth Down Fourth Up 2.5 The Tied Bass Chapter 3 The Three-Part Cadence 3.1 The Simple Cadence 3.2 The Compound Cadence 3.3 The Double Cadence 3.4 The Galant Cadence 3.5 The Neapolitan Cadence Chapter 4 The Rule of the Octave 4.1 The Ascending Pentachord 4.2 The Descending Pentachord 4.3 The Ascending Tetrachord 4.4 The Descending Tetrachord Chapter 5 Galant Schemata 5.1 The Leaping Romanesca 5.2 The Quiescenza 5.3 The Prinner 5.4 The Monte Romanesca 5.5 The Fenaroli 5.6 The Folia Part Two Harmony in Four Parts Chapter 6 Fundamentals of Four-Part Harmony 6.1 The Compound Cadence (II) 6.2 The Galant Cadence (II) 6.3 The Discant Cadence 6.4 The Dominant Seventh Chord 6.5 The Dominant Seventh Family 6.6 The Four-Part Rule of the Octave Chapter 7 Beyond the Rule of the Octave 7.1 The Diminished Seventh Family 7.2 Fifth Down Fourth Up and Third Down Second Up 7.3 The Tied Bass (II) 7.4 Descending Thirds 7.5 The Folia (II) Chapter 8 Chromaticism 8.1. Book SynopsisEnglish Church Music assembles in two volumes around 100 of the finest examples of English sacred choral music. The second volume presents a wealth of service material suitable for use throughout the year, inluding seventeen settings of the evening canticles, together with settings of the Te Deum and Jubilate, and the Preces and Responses.Trade ReviewThis 'Evensong' volume is a tremendous publication: carefully chosen, authoritatively presented, and extremely good value for money . . . Everyone with any interest in this repertoire will have their own ideas about questionable inclusons and regrettable omissions but the selection is solid . . . This anthology is excellent, and its attention to detail is gratifying . . . This is a magnificent volume. Durability of anthologies is a perennial cause for concern, but my copy of European Sacred Music is still in good nick after 15 years of heavy use; English Church Music vol. 2 should prove similarly imperishable. * Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ March 2012 *But those who do buy it will greatly benefit, as there are insights throughout, from the beginning (Blair's B minor service in its original form rather than Atkins' rewriting as normally sung) to the final Preces and Responses (Stone and Tomkins, both with new reconstructions of their missing parts). * Church Music Quarterly, June 2012 *This is quite a bold move in the series. English and Latin church music is often sung in concert as well as in church, but it is rare for Anglican services to be sung thus. I'm not very sure why, since a morning or evening service is shorter than a mass and enables programmes to be more flexible . . . I hope that this sells well to collegiate and cathedral choirs, and other emulate them. As always with the series, the layout is excellent, the biographical and editorial comments are the right level, and I trust John Rutter's proof-reading to make it unnecessary to do spot checks. * Clifford Bartlett, Early Music Review *Beide Bände sind als Grundausstattung und zur Einführung in die anglikanische Chormusik hevorragend geeignet. [Both volumes offer an excellent overview of and introduction to Anglican choral music.] * Dominik Axtmann, Musik und Kirche, January 14 *Table of ContentsPreces & Responses ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in B minor (original setting) ; Preces & Responses ; Second Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in C minor (unison voices) (transposed to D minor) ; Preces & Responses ; Lord's Prayer ; Short Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) ; Second Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) ; Short Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in B minor ; Psalm Chants ; Preces & Responses ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in B minor ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in G minor ; Preces & Responses ; Good Friday Reproaches ; Preces & Responses ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in G ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in C ; Te Deum and Jubilate in C ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in A ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in B flat ; Lord's Prayer ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis (St John's service) ; Preces & Responses ; Te Deum in G ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in D minor ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimmitis (Chichester Service) ; Jubilate Deo ; Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis No.2 in E flat ; An Order for Compline

Book SynopsisThe Oxford Book of Easy Flexible Anthems caters for church choirs of all types and sizes, enabling them to have at their fingertips easy music for every occasion. The collection presents flexibility of scoring in a constructive and realistic way, with particular provision for unison or two-part singing, while not forgetting SATB choirs, and a focus on ease of learning and performance. With complete coverage of the Church''s year, and a fabulous range of accessible, quality material, this is a vital resource for all church choirs.Trade ReviewIt is an excellent collection of 66 anthems suitable for the church choir that wants to sing anthems regularly but may sometimes struggle to have a balanced number of parts. A dedicated website, www.oup.com/flexible, allows many of the anthems to be heard in performance - a useful aid to choir directors and singers . . . This collection is wholeheartedly recommended â but if you need a copy that stays flat on the keyboard music stand, do opt for the spirally bound edition; both this and the ordinary paperback are excellent value.

    Oxford University Press Cadence

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCadence is a comprehensive examination of how formal units in European art music of the tonal era achieve closure. The book brings together the author''s decades-long investigations into cadence, a compositional device that is readily experienced both by musicians and non-musicians, but one that has proven intractable to clear and precise theoretical formulation. Rooted in Caplin''s broader theory of formal functions, the book first develops concepts of cadence for music of the high classical style and then extends these ideas to gauge cadential practice in earlier and later style periods. Throughout the study, various manifestations of cadence are defined in terms of their morphology (their harmonic and melodic profiles) as well as their function (the specific formal contexts in which they are deployed). Cadence introduces a host of theoretical concepts illustrated by copious musical examples, all of which contain extensive analytical annotations of harmony, melody and form. Though the book is addressed primarily to music theorists, the many issues of compositional practice raised in this study will resonate with the interests of composers, historians, and performers alike.
