Peeters Publishers History of Vatican II: v. 1
Book SynopsisIn this first volume, Giuseppe Alberigo begins with the extraordinary announcement of the newly-elected Pope John XXIII to convene "a general council for the universal church." Etienne Fouilloux explores the gradual development and shaping of the preparatory commissions. Joseph A. Komonchak then describes the internal struggles to define the scope and nature of the council; J. Oscar Beozzo examines the external climate and focus of the world media, governments, and other religious leaders. Finally, Karl Wittstadt recounts the organizational and logistical refinements that lead up to the eve of the council itself.

Peeters Publishers History of Vatican II: English Version Edited by
Book SynopsisThis second volume of The History of Vatican II describes the dramatic first session of the Council as it was electrified by Pope John XXIII's inspiring and liberating speech. It tells the story of how the bishops repudiated the doctrinal texts they had been expected to rubber stamp and gave overwhelming approval of the call to reform the church. Volume II describes the main protagonists, the issues at stake in the debates, and the gradual emergence and triumph of the desire for spiritual renewal and pastoral reform. It concludes with a study of the Council's agenda, an agenda that permitted this desire to become effective in subsequent sessions. In the pages of The Formation of the Council's Identity, such important ecclesiastical personages as the Cardinals Siri of Genoa and Suenens - virtual polar opposites on questions of aggiornamento - and soon-to-be famous periti such as Ives Congar, Hans Kung, and Karl Rahner make their appearances. The mood of the conservatives was one of trepidation in the face of unknown possibilites; the mood of the progressives a mixture of gloom and apprehension in the face of reactionary legalistic preparatory documents and commissions. In the midst of such contradictory expectations, John XXIII injected something completely unexpected in his "moonlight address" on the evening the Council opened. His deep humanity impressed itself upon the Council delegates and the world at large. Chapters include a preface by G. Alberigo; (1) "The Dramatic Opening Days" by A. Ricardi; (2) "The Council Gets Underway" by G.P. Fogarty; (3) "The Debate on the Liturgy" by M. Lamberigts; (4) "A Portrait of the Assembly" by H. Raguer; (5) "The Clash over Divine Revelation" by G. Ruggieri; (6) "The Brief Debate on Communications Media" by M. Lamberigts; (7) "Beyond an Ecclesiology of Polemics; The Debate on the Church" by G. Ruggieri; (8) "The Second Preparation of the Council during the Intersession" by J. Grootaers; (9) "Ebb and Flow: Conciliar Dynamics during the Intersession" by J. Grootaers; and (10) "The Conciliar Experience" by G. Alberigo.

Leuven University Press The Intimate: Polity and the Catholic Church—Laws
Book SynopsisThe waning influence of the Catholic church in the ethical and political debate For centuries the Catholic Church was able to impose her ethical rules in matters related to the intimate, that is, questions concerning life (from its beginning until its end) and the family, in the so-called Catholic countries in Western Europe. When the polity started to introduce legislation that was in opposition to the Catholic ethic, the ecclesiastical authorities and part of the population reacted. The media reported massive manifestations in France against same-sex marriages and in Spain against the de-penalization of abortion. In Italy the Episcopal conference entered the political field in opposition to the relaxation of several restrictive legal rules concerning medically assisted procreation and exhorted the voters to abstain from voting so that the referendum did not obtain the necessary quorum. In Portugal, to the contrary, the Church made a “pact” with the prime minister so that the law on same-sex marriages did not include the possibility of adoption. And in Belgium the Episcopal conference limited its actions to clearly expressing with religious, legal, and anthropological arguments its opposition to such laws, which all other Episcopal conferences did also.In this book, the authors analyse the full spectrum of the issue, including the emergence of such laws; the political discussions; the standpoints defended in the media by professionals, ethicists, and politicians; the votes in the parliaments; the political interventions of the Episcopal conferences; and the attitude of professionals. As a result the reader understands what was at stake and the differences in actions of the various Episcopal conferences. The authors also analyse the pro and con evaluations among the civil population of such actions by the Church. Finally, in a comparative synthesis, they discuss the public positions taken by Pope Francis to evaluate if a change in Church policy might be possible in the near future. Leuven University Press Universalism and Liberation: Italian Catholic Culture and the Idea of International Community, 1963–1978
Book SynopsisThe changing attitude of Catholic culture towards modernityAfter decades of a problematic, if not plainly hostile, approach to modernity by Catholic culture, the 1960s marked the beginning of a new era. As the Church employed a more positive approach to the world, voices in the Catholic milieu embraced a radical perspective, channeling the need for social justice for the poor and the oppressed. The alternative and complementary world views of ‘universalism’ and ‘liberation’ would drive the engagement of Catholics for generations to come, shaping the idea of international community in Catholic culture. Because of its traditional connection with the papacy and because of its prominent role in the map of European progressive Catholicism, Italy stands out as an ideal case study to follow these dynamics. By locating the Italian scenario in a broader geographical frame, Universalism and Liberation offers a new vantage point from which to investigate the social and political relevance of religion in an age of crisis. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).Trade Review'...provides a substantial and important contribution to the debate on the intellectual history of Catholicism and its role in the culture of internationalism in the twentieth century.'Massimo Faggioli, Catholic Historical Review, Autumn 2019 - https://muse.jhu.edu/article/724059Table of ContentsIntroductionThe context Definitions and literature Periodization The Italian case Goals of the research The Catholic Culture and the Idea of International Community The legacy of 'Traditional Universalism' From Traditional to New Universalism: a change of climate in the Catholic culture 'New Universalism': the Magisterium's discourse under Paul VI An alternative perspective? Leuven University Press The Survival of the Jesuits in the Low Countries,
Book SynopsisHow the Jesuits re-emerged after forty years of suppressionIn 1773, Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus. For the 823 Jesuits living in the Low Countries, it meant the end of their institutional religious life. In the Austrian Netherlands, the Jesuits were put under strict surveillance, but in the Dutch Republic they were able to continue their missionary work. It is this regional contrast and the opportunities it offered for the Order to survive that make the Low Countries an exceptional and interesting case in Jesuit history.Just as in White Russia, former Jesuits and new Jesuits in the Low Countries prepared for the restoration of the Order, with the help of other religious, priests, and lay benefactors. In 1814, eight days before the restoration of the Society by Pope Pius VII, the novitiate near Ghent opened with eleven candidates from all over the United Netherlands. Barely twenty years later, the Order in the Low Countries – by then counting one hundred members – formed an independent Belgian Province. A separate Dutch Province followed in 1850. Obviously, the reestablishment, with new churches and new colleges, carried a heavy survival burden: in the face of their old enemies and the black legends they revived, the Jesuits had to retrieve their true identity, which had been suppressed for forty years.Contributors: Peter van Dael, SJ (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam & Pontifical Gregorian University Rome), Pierre Antoine Fabre (École des hautes études en sciences sociales Paris), Joep van Gennip (Tilburg School of Catholic Theology), Michel Hermans, SJ (University of Namur), Marek Inglot, SJ (Pontifical Gregorian University Rome), Frank Judo (lawyer Brussels), Leo Kenis (KU Leuven) Marc Lindeijer, SJ (Bollandist Society Brussels), Jo Luyten (KADOC-KU Leuven), Kristien Suenens (KADOC-KU Leuven), Vincent Verbrugge (historian)This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).Trade Review“The Survival of the Jesuits in the Low Countries, 1773-1850, Edited by Leo Kenis and Marc Lindeijer”, alweer een heel interessante, Engelstalige uitgave van Leuven University Press. Leuven University Press Neo-Thomism in Action: Law and Society Reshaped
Book SynopsisIn his encyclical Aeterni Patris (1879), Pope Leo XIII expressed the conviction that the renewed study of the philosophical legacy of Saint Thomas Aquinas would help Catholics to engage in a dialogue with secular modernity while maintaining respect for Church doctrine and tradition. As a result, the neo-scholastic framework dominated Catholic intellectual production for nearly a century thereafter. This volume assesses the societal impact of the Thomist revival movement, with particular attention to the juridical dimension of this epistemic community. Contributions from different disciplinary backgrounds offer a multifaceted and in-depth analysis of many different networks and protagonists of the neo-scholastic movement, its institutions and periodicals, and its conceptual frameworks. Although special attention is paid to the Leuven Institute of Philosophy and Faculty of Law, the volume also discloses the neo-Thomist revival in other national and transnational contexts. By highlighting diverse aspects of its societal and legal impact, Neo-Thomism in Action argues that neo-scholasticism was neither a sterile intellectual exercise nor a monolithic movement. The book expands our understanding of how Catholic intellectual discourse communities were constructed and how they pervaded law and society during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Leuven University Press Political Exile in the Global Twentieth Century:
Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the political exile of Catholic Christian Democrats during the global twentieth century, from the end of the First World War to the end of the Cold War. Transcending the common national approach, the present volume puts transnational perspectives at center stage and in doing so aspires to be a genuinely global and longitudinal study. Political Exile in the Global Twentieth Century includes chapters on continental European exile in the United Kingdom and North America through 1945; on Spanish exile following the Civil War (1936-39), throughout the Franco dictatorship; on East-Central European exile from the defeat of Nazi Germany and the establishment of Communist rule (1944-48) through the end of the Cold War; and Latin American exile following the 1973 Chilean coup. Encompassing Europe (both East and West), Latin America, and the United States, Political Exile in the Global Twentieth Century places the diasporas of 20th-century Christian Democracy within broader, global debates on political exile and migration. Leuven University Press Territories of Faith: Religion, Urban Planning
Book SynopsisIn the 1950s and 1960s, thousands of churches were built across Europe in an attempt to keep up with the continent's rapid urbanisation. This book addresses the immense effort related to the planning, financing, and construction of this new religious infrastructure. Going beyond aspects of style and liturgy, and transcending a focus on particular architects or regions, this volume considers church building at the crossroads of pastoral theology, religious sociology, and urban planning. Presenting the rich palette of strategies and methods deployed by congregations, dioceses, government bodies, and private patrons in their attempt to secure a religious presence in the rapidly modernising world, Territories of Faith offers a broad view of the practice of religion and its material expression in the fast-evolving (sub)urban landscapes of post-war Europe. Andrea Longhi, Studi e Ricerche di Storia dell'architettura, Numero 12-2022Territories of Faith is an important contribution to the understanding of church building, especially roman catholic, in post-war western Europe. It examines the processes that underpinned post-war church building, which so manifestly deviated from tradition. This book certainly contributes to a better appreciation of these usually atypical buildings. The focus of this book is primarily on roman catholic churches, which makes the essays more mutually comparable.Marcus van der Meulen, FRH, https://www.frh-europe.org/territories-of-faith-church-and-the-post-war-city/This edited collection focuses on the extraordinary flourishing of religious architecture in European cities between roughly 1945 and 1975. We are reminded throughout the volume – which concentrates largely on the Roman Catholic church – of the astonishing pace of building in this period [...] Through use, for example, of material in diocesan and municipal archives, we gain a rich understanding of the sociological mechanics behind so many architectural masterpieces of this era. The pan-European perspective also makes comparable the different approaches to liturgy but also the different interpretations of the role of the church in postwar urban contexts. A very interesting read! Chapters include many stories featuring compelling personalities, important organizations, and intriguing buildings, all grounded in excellent archival work. Although the authors focus on institutional thinking and formal planning, each chapter also includes a discussion of specific architecture, and many authors raise preservation and heritage questions about those buildings today. This collection is not only packed with new information, but it is also coherent and conceptually sophisticated. Gretchen Buggeln, Church History , Volume 91 , Issue 4 , December 2022 , pp. 969 - 970 DOI: https://doi.org/10.1017/S000964072300015XThis well-conceived, well-researched and immaculately presented book (full of urban and church plans and photographs) captures well a specific moment in European history from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Its account of how the Catholic Church planned its missionary and pastoral response to the phenomenon of rapid urban expansion during this period skilfully identifies its wider resonances. The shift to a post-war secular age in Europe presented huge challenges to the Catholic Church and the book beautifully captures the way in which modern (mainly) Catholic places of worship became theologically inflected to articulate a new relationship between the church and the world. This explains the interdisciplinarity of the volume as it attempts to integrate the perspectives of urban and religious sociology, urban planning and policy, modern church history and theology into a seamless and critical whole. Amsterdam University Press Satire, Veneration, and St. Joseph in Art, c.
Book SynopsisSatire, Veneration, and St. Joseph in Art, c. 1300.1550 is the first book to reclaim satire as a central component of Catholic altarpieces, devotional art, and veneration, moving beyond humor's relegation to the medieval margins or to the profane arts alone. The book challenges humor's perception as a mere teaching tool for the laity and the antithesis of 'high' veneration and theology, a divide perpetuated by Counter-Reformation thought and the inheritance of Mikhail Bakhtin (Rabelais and His World, 1965). It reveals how humor, laughter, and material culture played a critical role in establishing St. Joseph as an exemplar in western Europe as early as the thirteenth century. Its goal is to open a new line of interpretation in medieval and early modern cultural studies by revealing the functions of humor in sacred scenes, the role of laughter as veneration, and the importance of play for pre-Reformation religious experiences.Trade Review"Anne L. Williams offers a welcome addition to the scholarship concerning late medieval and early modern hagiographical imagery. Well organized, well illustrated, and thoroughly researched, her multi-disciplinary approach marries art history, literary studies, and religious studies to bring new and compelling insights both to extant iconography of Saint Joseph and to lay and clerical attitudes toward his cult in the period(s) she studies."- Betsy Chunko-Dominguez, Savannah College of Art and Design, Speculum 96/3 (July 2021) "Focusing on the artistic deployment of humour, satire and mockery, this magisterial interdisciplinary study offers innovative readings of Joseph of Nazareth in European late medieval and early modern visual culture = required reading for anyone interested in the dynamic, expanding image of St. Joseph, arguably one of the most important fathers in European culture."- Dr. Catherine Harding, Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Art, University of VictoriaTable of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: Humor and Joseph's Hosen: The 'Domestic' Saint and the Earliest Evidence of His Cult Chapter Two: Secular Satire, St. Joseph, and Revealing Hidden Humor Chapter Three: The Vir Facetus, Urbanitas, and the Rhetoric of Humor in the Religious Image Chapter Four: The Miserly Saint: Sanctity, Satire, and Subversion Conclusion Select Bibliography Index

Amsterdam University Press Making Truth in Early Modern Catholicism
Book SynopsisScholarship has come to value the uncertainties haunting early modern knowledge cultures; indeed, awareness of the fragility and plurality of knowledge is now offered as a key element for understanding early modern science as a whole. Yet early modern actors never questioned the possibility of certainty itself and never objected to the notion that truth is out there, universal, and therefore safe from human manipulation. This book investigates how early modern actors managed not to succumb to postmodern relativism, despite the increasing uncertainties and blatant disagreements about the nature of God, Man, and the Universe. An international and interdisciplinary team of experts in fields ranging from the history of science to theology and the history of ideas analyses a number of practices that were central to maintaining and functionalizing the notion of absolute truth. Through such an interdisciplinary research the book shows how certainty about truth could be achieved, and how early modern society recognized the credibility of a wide plethora of actors in differentiating fields of knowledge.Trade Review"This remarkable collection of essays explores the processes of negotiation underlying the construction of truth in early modern Catholicism. [...] The essays gathered in this volume, as well as the excellent introduction by the editors, make a significant contribution to the history of early modern Catholicism and its relations to Europe and the world; to the history of science, and of its connection with religion; and to the expanding historiography on early modern uncertainty and doubt."- Marco Faini, Research Institute of the University of Bucharest – ICUB, Renaissance and Reformation / Renaissance et Réforme 44.3 (2021) "This volume is a welcome addition to the growing body of scholarly and critical work being done on forms and practices of early modern Catholicism at the intersection of intellectual history and cultural materialist methodologies." - Lowell Gallagher, Church History Journal, March 2023Table of ContentsBruno Boute, Andreea Badea, Marco Cavarzere, and Steven Vanden Broecke: A Product's Glamour: Credibility, or the Manufacture and Administration of Truth in Early Modern Catholicism PART I. Amsterdam University Press Desecularizing the Christian Past: Beyond R.A.
Book SynopsisThe essential objective of this study is to unpack the complicity between historians and secularization theory in the study of late ancient and early medieval Christianity—and then suggest a way out. In this work of historiography of religion, Enrico Beltramini argues that religious history is inherently secular and produces distorted representations of the Christian past. He suggests moving from an epistemological to a hermeneutical approach so that the supernatural worldview of the Christian past can be addressed on its own terms. This work also engages Markus’s saeculum and replaces Markus’s secularized relationship between the Kingdom and the government of the civitas with the Augustinian association of the Kingdom and divine government.Table of ContentsFOREWORD ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ABBREVIATIONS INTRODUCTION SACRAMENTAL ONTOLOGY ONTOLOGICAL TURN HISTORY AND THEOLOGY SAECULUM ANCIENT AND MODERN CHRISTIANITY AUGUSTINIANISMS SAECULUM RETOLD CONCLUSION BIBLIOGRAPHY

Amsterdam University Press Women Religious and Epistolary Exchange in the
Book SynopsisThe sixteenth century was a period of crisis in the Catholic Church. Monastic reorganization was a major issue, and women were at the forefront of charting new directions in convent policy. The story of the Carmelite Reform has been told before, but never from the perspective of the women on the front lines. Nearly all accounts of the movement focus on Teresa de Avila, (1515-1582), and end with her death in 1582. Women Religious and Epistolary Exchange in the Carmelite Reform: The Disciples of Teresa de Avila carries the story beyond Teresa’s death, showing how the next generation of Carmelite nuns struggled into the seventeenth century to continue her mission. It is unique in that it draws primarily from female-authored sources, in particular, the letters of three of Teresa’s most dynamic disciples: María de San José, Ana de Jesús and Ana de San Bartolomé.Trade ReviewWinner of the GEMELA 2022 Award, Book Category! Amsterdam University Press Catholic Social Networks in Early Modern England:
Book SynopsisCatholic Social Networks in Early Modern England: Kinship, Gender, and Coexistence explores the lived experience of Catholic women and men in the post-Reformation century. Set against the background of the gendered dynamics of English society, this book demonstrates that English Catholics were potent forces in the shaping of English culture, religious policy, and the emerging nation-state. Drawing on kinship and social relationships rooted in the medieval period, post Reformation English Catholic women and men used kinship, social networks, gendered strategies, political actions, and cultural activities like architecture and gardening to remain connected to patrons and to ensure the survival of their families through a period of deep social and religious change. This book contributes to recent scholarship on religious persecution and coexistence in post-Reformation Europe by demonstrating how English Catholics shaped state policy and enforcement of religious minorities and helped to define the character of early models of citizenship formation.Table of Contents1 Introduction 2 Late Medieval Origins of Early Modern Networks 3 Post-Reformation Kinship and Social Networks 4 Architecture, Gardens, and Cultural Networks 5 Catholic Political Life and Citizenship 6 Catholic Networks, Patronage, and Clientage 7 Conclusion Appendix: Family Relationships Tables Bibliography Index

Central European University Press Pressed by a Double Loyalty: Hungarian Attendance
Book SynopsisThe Second Vatican Council is the single most influential event in the twentieth-century history of the Catholic Church. The book analyzes the relationship between the Council and the "Ostpolitik" of the Vatican through the history of the Hungarian presence at Vatican II. Pope John XXIII, elected in 1958, was a catalyst. He thought that his most urgent task was to renew contacts with the Church behind the iron curtain. Hungarian participation at the Council was also made possible by the new pragmatic attitude in Hungarian church politics. After the crushing of the 1956 Revolution, churches in Hungary thought that the regime would last and were willing to compromise. Hungary did not consider Vatican II primarily an ecclesiastical event. It was considered a component of the negotiations between the Holy See and the Kadar regime: during the Council Hungary became the experimental laboratory of the Vatican's new eastern policy. Was it a Vatican decision or a Soviet instruction? Fejerdy suggests that it was a decision of the Holy See.Table of ContentsForeword Preface List of Abbreviations Cronology Introduction Part I.-The (Ante-) Preparatory Phase of the Council (1959-1962) 1. Book SynopsisThis edited volume starts from the perspectives of Beijing in how it sees that religion should serve the interests of the state. From China’s viewpoint, religion should act as a stabilizing force of society, or else the Christian Churches will lose their reason for existence. This might be incomprehensible to Western Christians, who believe in the freedom of religion and their right to embrace their faith. This collection of articles represents the concerted efforts of Chinese, Italians, and an American—who live in China, Europe, and the United States and belong to different disciplines, such as History, Religious Studies, and Language Studies—to promote a better understanding of the Catholic Church in the world and in China.Table of ContentsPART I: THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.- The Catholic Church in China in the 1980s: Identity, Loyalty, and Obedience.- The Canossian Sisters in Hong Kong and Beyond: Protection, Education, and Emancipation of Women.- PART II: THE BIBLE.- Reading and Praying with Sigao Shengjing (Studium Biblicum Version).- The Use and Reception of Sigao Shengjing (Studium Biblicum Version) by Catholic Communities in China.- PART III: EVANGELIZATION.- Catholic Fishermen in the Qingpu District of Shanghai.- Between Survival and Subordination: Jiangnan Catholics in the 1950s.- A Letter From an ex-Altar Boy to Late Fathers.
