Georgetown University Press Reclaiming American Catholicism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA rich portrait of American Catholicism at a crossroads between crisis and opportunityThe most vocal leaders in the US Catholic hierarchy today embrace a culture-war Catholicism that pits them against the pastoral priorities of Pope Francis and many Catholics in the pews. Reclaiming American Catholicism makes the argument that recalibrating the Church's engagement with politics and public life is vital for both the Church and the country. Gehring illuminates the Church that Pope Francis envisionsbruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streetsthrough stories of Catholic advocates working on the border, young Catholics who question Church teachings but are active in social justice campaigns, LGBTQ+ Catholics within a Church that does not accept their full humanity, and seminarians who work in the fields with migrants as part of their religious formation. This book offers living examples of the pastoral and prophetic Catholicism driving systemic grassroots reform and renewal.

Messenger Publications The Peoples Celebration of the Eucharist

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Eucharist is more than just a rite performed by a presiding priest in the presence of a congregation, though for many centuries it was seen by so many to be just that. The truth, however, is that its celebration, when viewed as an activity of the People of God, the Body of Christ, means that there is a fundamental unity incorporating both ordained and non-ordained. [i] From a deeper perspective, the task becomes one of exploring what the togetherness of priest and people implies, and finding a language to express it. In other words, what we are to understand by the people's participation' and the people's celebration '? What does it mean when the presider (the appropriate word, not celebrant') speaks of preparing to celebrate the sacred mysteries? This book is about the changes introduced by the Second Vatican Council, why they were made, and their implications, but also about the limitations of their effectiveness that

What are its intentions? Here learn about the following, among other things: The true prophets of God as well as Jesus warned against priests The Catholic Church incorporated and relied heavily upon pagan rites, rituals and symbols throughout its entire history The murderous instructions of the Old Testament still hold true according to the Catholic Catechism and Protestant doctrine The Books of Moses were for the most part written by priests almost 1000 years after MosesThe presented facts will shock many an innocent and credulous person of the modern day, who must now recognize without a doubt how the doctrine and practice of the Chair of Peter - and its protestant offshoot - discloses what it truly is. • The Survival of the Jesuits in the Low Countries,

Leuven University Press The Survival of the Jesuits in the Low Countries,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow the Jesuits re-emerged after forty years of suppressionIn 1773, Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus. For the 823 Jesuits living in the Low Countries, it meant the end of their institutional religious life. In the Austrian Netherlands, the Jesuits were put under strict surveillance, but in the Dutch Republic they were able to continue their missionary work. It is this regional contrast and the opportunities it offered for the Order to survive that make the Low Countries an exceptional and interesting case in Jesuit history.Just as in White Russia, former Jesuits and new Jesuits in the Low Countries prepared for the restoration of the Order, with the help of other religious, priests, and lay benefactors. In 1814, eight days before the restoration of the Society by Pope Pius VII, the novitiate near Ghent opened with eleven candidates from all over the United Netherlands. Barely twenty years later, the Order in the Low Countries – by then counting one hundred members – formed an independent Belgian Province. A separate Dutch Province followed in 1850. Obviously, the reestablishment, with new churches and new colleges, carried a heavy survival burden: in the face of their old enemies and the black legends they revived, the Jesuits had to retrieve their true identity, which had been suppressed for forty years.Contributors: Peter van Dael, SJ (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam & Pontifical Gregorian University Rome), Pierre Antoine Fabre (École des hautes études en sciences sociales Paris), Joep van Gennip (Tilburg School of Catholic Theology), Michel Hermans, SJ (University of Namur), Marek Inglot, SJ (Pontifical Gregorian University Rome), Frank Judo (lawyer Brussels), Leo Kenis (KU Leuven) Marc Lindeijer, SJ (Bollandist Society Brussels), Jo Luyten (KADOC-KU Leuven), Kristien Suenens (KADOC-KU Leuven), Vincent Verbrugge (historian)This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).Trade Review“The Survival of the Jesuits in the Low Countries, 1773-1850, Edited by Leo Kenis and Marc Lindeijer”, alweer een heel interessante, Engelstalige uitgave van Leuven University Press. Willem Frijhoff, Archives de sciences sociales des religions, 196 | octobre-décembre 2021, mis en ligne le 01 décembre 2021, DOI : https://doi.org/10.4000/assr.64904Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION Leo Kenis – Marc Lindeijer, SJSURVIVED The Quick Downfall and Slow Rise of the Jesuit Order in the Low Countries Marc Lindeijer, SJ – Jo Luyten – Kristien SuenensSURVIVAL The ‘Suppressions’ of the Society of Jesus in the Gallo-Belgian Province Michel Hermans, SJ“Contulit hos virtus, expulit invidia” The Suppression of the Jesuits of the Flemish-Belgian Province Joep van GennipThe Fate of the Jesuits of the Gallo-Belgian Province after 1773 Michel Hermans, SJThe Jesuits of the Low Countries and the Society of Jesus in Russia Marek Inglot, SJSURVIVORS Restoration in One Country? • The Church in Pluralist Society

University of Notre Dame Press The Church in Pluralist Society

Book SynopsisVatican II opened new pathways to engagement with societies shaped by modernity. Its project could be read as an attempt to interpret the stance of the church in relation to the whole project of modernity. The fundamental presumption of this collection of essays is that it is timely, indeed imperative, to keep alive the question of the church''s self-understanding in its journey alongside the complex, often rebellious, always restless mind of the modern world. Cornelius J. Casey and Fáinche Ryan have assembled some of the most prominent commentators on ecclesiastical and social-political engagements from the fields of theology, political philosophy, social theory, and cultural criticism. The contributors present differing perspectives on the role of the church. Some argue that pluralism is here to stay. Others point out that the liberal pluralism of contemporary society is aggressively powered by global corporate consumerism. This book, with its variety of voices, explores these issTrade Review"This is a well-structured anthology of essays that bear effectively on the challenges and limits of pluralism as well as the inevitable tensions of the church's engagement with such social settings. The Church in Pluralist Society is a useful resource for the ways in which Catholic intellectuals grapple with the challenge of living in the midst of the growing incomprehension of a secular world." —David Walsh, Catholic University of America"The topic of Social and Political Roles of Church in Today's Pluralist Society is of critical, current interest. The work includes an impressive range and reputation from its contributors, as well as a large variety of disciplines and ecclesial contexts. • Stealing My Religion

Harvard University Press Stealing My Religion

Book SynopsisLiz Bucar navigates the thorny terrain of religious appropriation, from yoga classes to non-Muslims who signal allyship by donning hijabs. Exploring the ethics of alleged appropriations, Bucar argues that borrowing isn’t itself a problem, as long as we are invested in our enthusiasms—committed to understanding their roots and diverse meanings.Trade ReviewLively in style and backed by solid, unobtrusive scholarship…In her call for responsibility in borrowing, Liz Bucar singles out for criticism forms of exploitation close to her own identity as privileged and religiously unaffiliated. -- Jonathan Benthall * Times Literary Supplement *So finely written, so intelligent and fair, and laced with such surprising discoveries that it deserves a reader’s full attention…As the act of walking a religious pilgrimage does invite greater self-awareness…Stealing My Religion is now an essential part of that worthy endeavor. -- Kurt Caswell * Los Angeles Review of Books *Injects new life into what has become a stale discourse on the concept of ‘cultural appropriation.’ Bringing together three disparate case studies, Bucar brilliantly demonstrates how definitions of religion fuse with practices of capitalism and ownership…Stealing My Religion accomplishes what it sets out to do and then some. -- Rumya S. Putcha * The Revealer *Stealing My Religion not only deftly grapples with fascinating case studies to name and center the ethical challenges of religious appropriation, but also models how to use this knowledge to reassess our relationship to practices of religious appropriation that we all collude with in various ways. The book also invites us to pause to (re)assess our participation in these complicated spheres of praxis—as educators and scholars, or just everyday folks—and ultimately our responsibilities to the communities we have harmed along the way. -- Shobhana Xavier * Reading Religion *Inspiring and admirable…This book is highly recommended not only for scholars of religion in general, but especially for anthropologists and ethnographers of religion in particular. It not only offers new insights into religious practices and the appropriation of these practices by both religious and non-religious people, but also addresses fundamental methodological and epistemological challenges within the study of religion. -- Eline Huygens * Material Religion *Undoubtedly a stimulating and challenging investigation of appropriation…Bucar perhaps offers some of the best the field of religious studies has to offer as an analytic and ethical enterprise. She forces her readers to examine the interconnections of individual and structural religious exploitation in our classrooms and beyond. -- Amanda H. Dominique * Teaching Theology & Religion *Stealing My Religion offers a careful meditation on the problems of religious appropriation in the contemporary world. -- Sophia Arjana * Journal of Contemporary Religion *At a time when discussions about cultural appropriation too often feel overheated and imprecise, Liz Bucar points to a way forward by asking us to consider the stolen stuff of faith—religious ideas, practices, and objects repurposed by those outside the fold. But who owns religion? Who is outside and inside the fold? Bucar’s sharp insights, shot through with humor and self-awareness, are exactly what we need the next time we reach over to borrow from someone else’s religion for our own therapeutic, political, or educational needs. -- Gene Demby, cohost and correspondent for NPR’s Code SwitchUsing hijab to sell soda, the Buddha to market vegan food, or crucifixes to make pop music pop can feel edgy or celebratory for those embracing the visuals without the credos behind them. But, as Liz Bucar reveals in this thoughtful work, the faithful may not appreciate seeing their heart on your sleeve. A welcome and necessary reminder that all of us, ultimately, are unreliable narrators when we weave ourselves into others’ stories. -- Jeff Yang, coauthor of Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now and cohost of They Call Us BruceWith interpretive subtlety and ethical vision, Liz Bucar explores the moral risk of intercultural theft. Stealing My Religion is a powerful intervention by a leading scholar of religion into the illiberal results of everyday religious exploitation. Highly recommended. -- Kathryn Lofton, author of Consuming ReligionA sharp and courageous book that claims religion can also be culturally appropriated. With provocative and timely examples, Liz Bucar challenges our understandings about race, culture, and religion when we think about appropriation. -- Tahseen Shams, author of Here, There, and Elsewhere: The Making of Immigrant Identities in a Globalized WorldWhen do religious borrowings cause harm? When do they function as meaningful exchanges? In this brilliant study, Liz Bucar skillfully wrestles with these difficult questions and brings race, religion, and commodification into conversation. -- Shenila Khoja-Moolji, author of Sovereign Attachments: Masculinity, Muslimness, and Affective Politics in Pakistan

  • The Charismatic Gymnasium

Duke University Press The Charismatic Gymnasium

Book SynopsisIn The Charismatic Gymnasium Maria José de Abreu examines how Charismatic Catholicism in contemporary Brazil produces a new form of total power through a concatenation of the breathing body, theology, and electronic mass media. De Abreu documents a vast religious respiratory program of revival popularly branded as “the aerobics of Jesus.” Pneuma—the Greek term for air, breath, and spirit—is central to this aerobic program, whose goal is to labor on the athletic elasticity of spirit. Tracing the rhetoric, gestures, and spaces that together constitute this new theological community, de Abreu exposes the articulating forces among evangelical Christianity, neoliberal logics, and the rise of right-wing politics. By calling attention to how an ethics of pauperism vitally intersects with the neoliberal ethos of flexibility, de Abreu shows how paradoxes do not hinder but expand the Charismatic gymnasium. The result, de Abreu demonstrates, is the productionTrade Review“The Charismatic Gymnasium is a rare work that refuses to simply stay on the safe page of a modernist critique of representation and instead enters the much weirder world of how things actually work. This brilliant and truly original book makes a major contribution to social, cultural, and political theory.” -- Kathleen Stewart, coauthor of * The Hundreds *“At every turn of the page, Maria José de Abreu helps us think outside of the box on issues of the rhythmical, spatial, theological, and charismatic-political dimensions of being in common from the point of view of a religious congregation and its presence in Brazilian media. Working from the concept of pneuma, which connotes both breath and spirit, Maria José de Abreu studies the role of breathing human bodies in the culture and theology of pneumatic, Spirit-based faith. • In the Shadow of Ebenezer

New York University Press In the Shadow of Ebenezer

Book SynopsisUncovers how the Civil Rights Movement and Vatican II affected African American Catholics in Atlanta The history and practices of African American Catholics has been vastly understudied, and Black Catholics are often written off as a fringe sector of the religious population. Yet, Catholics of African descent have been a part of Catholicism since the early days of European exploration into the New World. In the Shadow of Ebenezer examines how the Civil Rights Movement and the Second Vatican Council affected African American Catholics in Atlanta, Georgia, focusing on the historic Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in the Old Fourth Ward. Our Lady of Lourdes is a neighbor of major historic Black Protestant churches in the city, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, a block away, which during the Civil Rights era was the pulpit of Martin Luther King Jr. Featuring archival and oral history sources, the book examines the religious and cultural life of the parishioners of Our Lady of LourdesTrade ReviewWell-crafted studies of Black Catholic institutions are rare enough. To have such a study of a Black Catholic parish in Atlanta during the civil rights movement is an occasion for celebration. -- John McGreevy, Charles and Jill Fischer Provost and Francis A. • Shadows of Nagasaki: Trauma, Religion, and Memory

Fordham University Press Shadows of Nagasaki: Trauma, Religion, and Memory

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA critical introduction to how the Nagasaki atomic bombing has been remembered, especially in contrast to that of Hiroshima. In the decades following the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, the city’s residents processed their trauma and formed narratives of the destruction and reconstruction in ways that reflected their regional history and social makeup. In doing so, they created a multi-layered urban identity as an atomic-bombed city that differed markedly from Hiroshima’s image. Shadows of Nagasaki traces how Nagasaki’s trauma, history, and memory of the bombing manifested through some of the city’s many post-atomic memoryscapes, such as literature, religious discourse, art, historical landmarks, commemorative spaces, and architecture. In addition, the book pays particular attention to how the city’s history of international culture, exemplified best perhaps by the region’s Christian (especially Catholic) past, informed its response to the atomic trauma and shaped its postwar urban identity. Key historical actors in the volume’s chapters include writers, Japanese- Catholic leaders, atomic-bombing survivors (known as hibakusha), municipal officials, American occupation personnel, peace activists, artists, and architects. The story of how these diverse groups of people processed and participated in the discourse surrounding the legacies of Nagasaki’s bombing shows how regional history, culture, and politics—rather than national ones—become the most influential factors shaping narratives of destruction and reconstruction after mass trauma. In turn, and especially in the case of urban destruction, new identities emerge and old ones are rekindled, not to serve national politics or social interests but to bolster narratives that reflect local circumstances.Table of ContentsNote on Japanese Names | xi Introduction: Imagining Nagasaki: Religion and History in Postatomic Memoryscapes Chad R. Book SynopsisA complete reappraisal of the papacy of Honorius II, highlighting the strategies to which this pontificate turned in order to govern ecclesiastical institutions and to deal with secular matters. The papacy of Honorius II (1124-1130) has often been overlooked by historians, usually considered uneventful, transitional and colourless. This book offers a complete reappraisal, drawing on a detailed examination of the surviving letters produced by the papal chancery to show that conversely, it was a vital and innovative pontificate. It argues that during what was a stabilising period for the papacy in an era of peace, Honorius and the chancery were able to enact the instruments and ecclesiological claims dictated by external threats and produced during previous papacies. In particular, it shows that by adapting the content and form of the letters it issued, Honorius's chancery, led by the official Haimeric, played a decisive role in extending the ecclesiological thinking of the papacy. Furthermore, these years paved the way for ideas which were further developed later in the twelfth century, especially the arguments created by the warring parties in the Schism of 1130 to legitimise their respective popes. This study thus presents a different view of Honorius' administration, highlighting the strategies to which the papacy turned in order both to govern ecclesiastical institutions and to deal with secular matters, when previous protocols and routines could no longer be relied upon.Table of ContentsLIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS ACKOWLEDGEMENTS ABBREVIATIONS INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1: Honorius II and Roman primacy: continuities and innovations CHAPTER 2: The instruments used to assert Roman primacy CHAPTER 3: Honorius's deafening silences: his relations with lay powers CHAPTER 4: Ecclesiology at work: a case study of Montecassino CONCLUSION APPENDIX: A preliminary calendar of the letters of Honorius II BIBLIOGRAPHY INDEX

Book SynopsisFrom a master chronicler of legal and financial misconduct, a magnificent investigation nine years in the making, this book traces the political intrigue and inner workings of the Catholic Church. Decidedly not about faith, belief in God, or religious doctrine, this book is about the church''s accumulation of wealth and its byzantine entanglements with financial markets across the world. Told through 200 years of prelates, bishops, cardinals, and the Popes who oversee it all, Gerald Posner uncovers an eyebrow-raising account of money and power in perhaps the most influential organization in the history of the world. God''s Bankershas it all: a rare exposé and an astounding saga marked by poisoned business titans, murdered prosecutors, mysterious deaths of private investigators, and questionable suicides; a carnival of characters from Popes and cardinals, financiers and mobsters, kings and prime ministers; and a set of moral and political circumstances that clarify not only

Book Synopsis“Brant Pitre is one of the most compelling theological writers on the scene today.” –Bishop Robert Barron   Bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist casts new light on the Virgin Mary, illuminating her role in the Old and New Testaments.   Are Catholic teachings on Mary really biblical? Or are they the traditions of men? Should she be called the Mother of God, or just the mother of Jesus? Did she actually remain a virgin her whole life or do the brothers of Jesus refer to her other children? By praying to Mary, are Catholics worshipping her? And what does Mary have to do with the quest to understand Jesus?   In Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, Dr. Pitre takes readers step-by-step from the Garden of Eden to the Book of Revelation to reveal how deeply biblical Catholic beliefs about Mary really are. Dr. Pitre uses the Old Testame
