  • Catholic Cosmopolitanism and Human Rights

Cambridge University Press Catholic Cosmopolitanism and Human Rights

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIt is because Catholicism played such a formative role in the construction of Western legal culture that it is the focal point of this enquiry. The account of international law from its origin in the treaties of Westphalia, and located in the writing of the Grotian tradition, had lost contact with another cosmopolitan history of international law that reappeared with the growth of the early twentieth century human rights movement. The beginnings of the human rights movement, grounded in democratic sovereign power, returned to that moral vocabulary to promote the further growth of international order in the twentieth century. In recognising this technique of periodically returning to Western cosmopolitan legal culture, this book endeavours to provide a more complete account of the human rights project that factors in the contribution that cosmopolitan Catholicism made to a general theory of sovereignty, international law and human rights.Trade Review'Catholic cosmopolitanism has made an essential contribution to the rise of human rights law in the twentieth century. This well-researched book convincingly demonstrates that such an approach to international law did not come out of the blue but instead built on a millennium of Catholic legal, political and theological thought from the medieval period to the modern. It also leaves the reader with a pressing question: will the fruitful alliance of cosmopolitan traditions stemming from the Enlightenment and Christianity hold? Swimming somewhat against the tide, the author makes a case for why this would be desirable while acknowledging that it appears increasingly unlikely.' Hans-Martien ten Napel, Universiteit Leiden'This timely and challenging book takes us beyond the traditional histories of human rights law, exploring its often neglected roots in and links to the contested cosmopolitanism of Catholicism. Understanding the roots and limits of the modern human rights project requires continuous reflection and an openness to new ways of thinking about the ruptures that human rights claims seek to provoke. Catholic Cosmopolitanism and Human Rights will be an indispensable resource for all scholars and historians of the human rights project, and for critical and sympathetic observers of Catholicism's claims to universalism.' • Witchcraft and the Modern Roman Catholic Church

Cambridge University Press Witchcraft and the Modern Roman Catholic Church

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWitchcraft is rarely mentioned in official documents of the contemporary Roman Catholic church, but ideas about the dangers of witchcraft and other forms of occultism underpin the recent revival of interest in exorcism in the church. This Element examines hierarchical and clerical understandings of witchcraft within the contemporary Roman Catholic church. The Element considers the difficulties faced by clergy in parts of the developing world, where belief in witchcraft is so dominant it has the potential to undermine the church''s doctrine and authority. The Element also considers the revival of interest in witchcraft and cursing among Catholic demonologists and exorcists in the developed world. The Element explores whether it is possible for a global church to adopt any kind of coherent approach to a phenomenon appraised so differently across different cultures that the church''s responses to witchcraft in one context are likely to seem irrelevant in another.Table of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Historical background; 3. Witchcraft in modern Vatican documents; 4. Witchcraft and the exorcists; 5. Catholicism and witchcraft in the developing world; 6. Conclusions.

Book SynopsisThis important and illuminating book focuses on Ratzinger''s status as one of the preeminent Catholic theologians of the 20th century. Aidan Nichols provides a full-scale investigation of his theology as it develops from the 1950s onward. The book presents a chronological account of the development of Ratzinger''s writing which reflects a wide range of historical and theoretical interests such as: Augustine''s ecclesiology, early Franciscanism and the idea of salvation history, Christian brotherhood, the unfolding of the Second Vatican Council, the Apostles' Creed, explorations of the concept of the Church, preaching, liturgy and Church music, eschatology, the foundations of dogmatic and moral theology, and the problem of pluralism. This third edition, as well as providing a two-chapter-long biography of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, and amplifying the account already given of his later pre-papal writings, describes the new thinking that belongs to the years of Bened

  • The Spirit of Catholicism

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Spirit of Catholicism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Catholic Church seems to be in serious crisis disfigured by scandals, divided by theological, cultural and political differences, retreating institutionally in many places, judged irrelevant by a culture that believes it has outgrown this kind of religious faith. Yet the number of practising Catholics increases each year, a growing membership that seeks to be well grounded spiritually, intellectually and pastorally. Many younger people are curious to know and experience traditional and historical realities. Thus, the need for an informed and reflective restatement of The Spirit of Catholicism has never been more urgent. In this clear and intelligible book, Vivian Boland presents the substance of Catholic belief and life, what the res catholica believes itself essentially to be. From its basis in the Bible, learning from key figures of Christian history, and in the full light of Pope Francis''s missionary ethos, this account of Catholicism casts new light on familiTrade ReviewOverall, this book is a delight. Boland clearly enjoys his subject and takes great pleasure in handing on his knowledge and understanding of the Church. […] A joy to read. […] I hugely enjoyed this book, which is at once erudite and accessible, and offers a succinct yet lucid account of the Church’s self-understanding both now and throughout history.[…] It will be a pleasurable and informative read for all. * The Tablet *Dominican Father Vivian Boland…brings the expertise of a deft and thorough theologian to the topic. His is a dense volume with helpful insights. * The Central Minnesota Catholic *This book would be at the top of a recommended reading list such is its scholarship, seen in its spectrum of scripture and selected theologians... This book embodies the scriptural, sacramental and spiritual energy for both participation and mission. * The Furrow *[The Spirit of Catholicism] is a most remarkably rich progression of theological thinking, subject after subject dealt with in depth and precision, with awareness of the tradition as well as what is being thought about it in the contemporary work of theologians. And all of it being bound together with the thread of Catholicism. ... [Boland] has given us what I would like to call a positive Summa of all that is Catholic in the work of Christ and the Spirit in God’s world. -- Liam Walsh OP, Vice-rector emeritus, University of Fribourg‘This wonderful volume may be tough going for those looking for a basic introduction to Catholicism. But for those who have some familiarity with Catholicism as well as those looking to deepen their knowledge and welcome fresh insights, Boland’s Spirit of Catholicism is to be highly recommended without hesitation or reservation. * Doctrine & Life *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part One 1 A People of God? Book SynopsisThomas Keating was a Cistercian monk who founded the worldwide ''Contemplative Outreach'', teaching people the art of meditation. Invitation to Love provides a road map for the journey that begins when Centering Prayer is seriously undertaken. Pointing to some of the recognizable landmarks on this journey, as well as to its ultimate destination, Father Keating addresses common questions regarding contemplative practice: How will it affect my life? Where does it lead us spiritually? What obstacles will I encounter along the way? How does it work? Following on from Open Mind, Open Heart, this book establishes a dialogue between the insights of contemporary psychology and the classic Christian spiritual masters, providing a solid conceptual background for the practice of Centering Prayer. Out of stock

Book SynopsisMore than at any time in the past, Roman Catholics & evangelicals are working together. They are standing shoulder to shoulder against social evils. They are joining across denominational boundaries in renewal movements. And many evangelicals are finding the history, tradition, and grandeur of the Roman Catholic Church appealing. This newfound rapport has caused many evangelical leaders and laypeople to question the age-old disagreements that have divided Protestants and Catholics: Aren't we all saying the same thing in different language? The Roman Catholic Controversy is an absorbing look at current views of tradition and Scripture, the Papacy, the Mass, Purgatory, indulgences, and Marian doctrine. James White affirms that evangelicals and Catholics share common ground on some points. Yet there are crucial differences that remain regarding the Christian life--and the heart of the Gospel itself--that cannot be ignored.

Book SynopsisEven in a country as religious as the U.S., many people feel disengaged from their faith communities. More than half report that they really don't get the opportunity in their congregation to do what they do best. People just feel disconnected. Living Your Strengths shows readers how to use their innate gifts to enrich their faith communities. The book - written by onetime pastors Albert Winseman and Curt Liesveld, and Donald O. • Human Dignity and Liberal Politics: Catholic

Georgetown University Press Human Dignity and Liberal Politics: Catholic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA deeply considered examination of the “common good” reconciling Catholic Social Thought with secular politics and philosophy The Second Vatican Council invites dialogue about the common good as the set of economic, political, legal, and cultural conditions for human flourishing, whether as individuals or as communities. However, some contemporary Catholic authors jeopardize this dialogue by polarizing liberalism and the common good, interpreting the commitment to individual liberty as incompatible with commitment to the common good. Human Dignity and Liberal Politics clarifies the meaning of the common good through the three lenses of Aristotelian practical philosophy, twentieth-century Catholic Social Thought, and political liberalism. It makes the case that embracing the common good does not entail a rejection of liberalism, but that a commitment to liberal politics is compatible with faithful adherence to the Catholic tradition. The book argues that liberal political philosophy is not only compatible with Catholic Social Teaching but may also be the most appropriate framework for communicating the richness of the Church’s tradition today. Furthermore, accepting political liberalism can facilitate collaboration in political life between those who hold different worldviews and foster an enriched discussion of democracy, human rights, and religious liberty. Students and scholars of Christian ethics and political philosophy will benefit from this response to the challenges of dialogue about the “common good” in the context of the resurgence of this topic.Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsAbbreviations IntroductionChapter One: Three Lenses to View Common GoodsChapter Two: Aristotle ReconstructedChapter Three: Does Political Augustinianism Help?Chapter Four: Aquinas and Analogy: The Limits of Bounded RationalityChapter Five: Is Liberalism the Enemy? • Georgetown University Press The Moral Life: Eight Lectures

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA profound inquiry into what prompts human beings to act morally Most foundational texts on theological ethics address either the person or society. In The Moral Life, James F. Keenan, SJ, posits that these two are inextricably linked. He presents eight stages of preparing for the moral life, describing vulnerability as the foundation for contemporary ethics. He understands vulnerability to be what establishes the human capacity for recognizing and responding to others rather than a compromised state of being. Mutual recognition emerges as the first moral act of the vulnerable human. He shows how conscience guides the activity of one who has first vulnerably recognized others. The Moral Life offers scholars and students of Christian ethics a novel perspective on what we need to know not only to be and live morally but also to teach and share with others what they need to know.Table of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgments Chapter 1: GriefChapter 2: VulnerabilityChapter 3: RecognitionChapter 4: Conscience Chapter 5: DiscipleshipChapter 6: Grace and SinChapter 7: The VirtuesChapter 8: The Communion of Saints, the Works of Mercy, and the Beatitudes BibliographyIndexAbout the Author

  • Rethinking Justice in Catholic Social Thought

Georgetown University Press Rethinking Justice in Catholic Social Thought

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA reinterpretation of justice in Catholic social thought as a lived experience of communal lifeCatholic social thought is a living tradition. Insights into justice that are centuries old still apply, but they need to be reexamined in light of historical developments such as democracy, global markets, feminism, the preferential option for the poor, environmental challenges, and the shift of Christianity's growth to the Global South. Rethinking Justice in Catholic Social Thought invites the reader to engage insights on justice from a range of cultural, religious, and intellectual traditionsfrom African, Hindu, and Buddhist to Scholastic, liberal, Latin American, and Scriptural. The result is an understanding of justice as a lived experience of communal life that entails freedom and dignity for all and equitable access to the common goods of the community. This volume will help the reader develop a conception of justice that is coherent, comprehensive, faithful to the tradition, responsive to the best contemporary insights, suitable for confronting pressing injustices, and clear enough to be accessible to nonexperts.
