Book SynopsisThe European Union is grappling with a democracy problem. The succession of crises which have plagued the increasingly executive EU for years, has led to a rising cacophony of voices calling for fundamental change to the integration project. Yet despite the seismic shock of the Brexit referendum and the electoral upsets by nativist parties across the continent, few of the plans for EU reform include concrete proposals to reduce the age-old democratic deficit. This book is concerned with the two-pronged question of how the relationship between citizens, the state and EU institutions has changed, and how direct democratic participation can be improved in a multi-layered Union. As such, this edited volume focuses not on populism per se, nor does it deeply engage with policy and output legitimacy. Rather, the research is concerned with process and polity. Building on the notion of increasing social, economic and political interdependence across borders, this volume asks how a sense of solidarity and European identity can be rescued from the bottom up by politically empowering citizens to ‘take back control’ of their EU.Table of ContentsPart I / 1. Book SynopsisThis volume brings together a range of scholars dissatisfied with the mainstream of the populism debate. It intends to bring forward a perspective which envisions populism not simply as a negative aspect of politics, but as a way of doing politics. Contemporary politics has been characterised by the overarching presence of populism, while simultaneously engendering a sense of fear and extremism around the results of populist movements. This collection intends to unpack the true potential for movements from and by the people, linking these historically and offering a new lens for thinking about contemporary populism. What can we learn from recent events? How can these lessons inform how we think about politics for the future? Offering this approach, from the perspective of populist potential, will help us answer these questions and open the debate with contributors from countries or regions that have a tradition of populism, privileging them with a deeper understanding.Table of ContentsIntroduction Emmy Eklundh and Andy Knott Chapter 1: Populism: The Politics of a Definition Andy Knott Chapter 2: Populism and Myth María Esperanza Casullo Chapter 3: Populism and the Politics of Control Paolo Gerbaudo Chapter 4: Ten Theses on Populism Emilia Palonen Chapter 5: Why Populists aren’t Mad Emmy Eklundh Chapter 6: Populism, Democracy and the Transnational People: In Defence of Democratic Populism Mark Devenney Chapter 7: Left Populism as a Political Project Marina Prentoulis Chapter 8: A Manifesto and Populism? Out of stock

Book SynopsisExplore the revival of far-right movements and parties over the past few decades in varying liberal-democracies, including the United States, Canada and Australia, Hungary, Poland and Taiwan. After decades on the social and political margins, far-right groups and movements in 2019 are enjoying increasing success, and even claiming a place in mainstream electoral politics in many Western political systems. Research shows that new media like Twitter, YouTube, and community sites likes 4chan and Reddit are increasingly involved with the mobilization of popular support for far-right electoral campaigns, and even organized political violence. These technologies – including other social media, discussion websites, certain online games, chat servers, talk radio, cable news, and print media – are making contemporary far-right ideologies possible in diverse ways, altering methods of recruitment to the extent that they become unrecognizable from far-right movements of the past, and thus, more dangerous. The results of these new technological processes can be seen in the increasing normalization of far-right values within mainstream culture, politics, and media ecosystems within countries from the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia to Germany, Poland and Hungary. This book brings together recent academic research exploring how far-right groups use new media to recruit followers to extremist beliefs and mobilize political action. In doing so, the book reveals the complex ways that evolving technologies are used both purposively, subtly, and in some cases incidentally, to recruit and mobilize far-right support.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisJust as Donald Trump's victorious campaign for the US presidency shocked liberal Americans, the seemingly sudden national prominence of white supremacists, xenophobes, militia leaders, and mysterious "Alt-Right" leaders mystifies many. But the extreme Right has been growing steadily in the US since the 1990s, with the rise of Patriot militias; following 9/11, when conspiracy theorists found fresh life; and in virulent reaction to the first black president of the country. Nurtured by a powerful right-wing media sector in radio, TV, and online, the Far Right, Tea Party movement conservatives, and Republican activists found common ground in "Producerist" ideology and "constitutionalist" interpretations of US law-an alternative America that is resurgent, even as it has been ignored by the political establishment and mainstream media.Investigative reporter David Neiwert has been tracking extremists for more than two decades, and here he provides a deeply reported and authoritative report on the background, mindset, and growth on the ground of Far Right movements across the country. The product of years of reportage, and including the most in-depth investigation of Trump's ties to Far Right figures, this is a crucial book about one of the most disturbing sides of the US.Trade ReviewThe seemingly sudden reemergence of the far right in America has left many in a state of panic and bewilderment. Alt-America will be essential in helping us to comprehend the depth of its foundations in national life. -- Angela Nagle, author of Kill All Normies: Online Culture Wars from 4Chan and Tumblr to Trump and the Alt-RightNeiwert looks beyond conservative schisms, left-wing failings and online subcultures to pinpoint the experiences and beliefs that bind the alt-right together, and he calls the world he finds "Alt-America". * Washington Post *An alarming, well-researched account of how the far-right extremist underground became empowered in the era of Trump... A prescient discussion of one of the darkest issues facing America today. * Kirkus *Offers the most comprehensive account of the United States' renewed extremist cultures . Alt-America excites in its ability to connect the seemingly extraordinary alt-right to the broader culture of wing-nut conservatism, drawing white nationalism, 4chan, Donald Trump, Alex Jones and Fox News together into a wonky negaverse version of political life. -- John Semley * The Globe and Mail *Neiwert has not only earned his investigative chops over the past decade or so by exploring the dangerous side of right-wing extremism-he's proven himself to be one of the more lyrical and elegant writers on the beat. * Daily Kos *Tracing the ebbs and flows of this far-right extremism in the United States over the last 20 years, Neiwert argues that white nationalist activity in the age of Trump is simply the latest flare-up of what he calls 'Alt-America,' or the segment of the American population that has fed on conspiracy theories, racist misinformation, and deep distrust of federal institutions for decades. -- J.C. Book SynopsisThe 2014 European Parliament elections were hailed as a 'populist earthquake', with parties like the French Front National, UKIP and the Danish People’s Party topping the polls in their respective countries. But what happened afterwards? Based on policy positions, voting data, and interviews conducted over three years with senior figures from fourteen radical right populist parties and their partners, this is the first major study to explain these parties' actions and alliances in the European Parliament. International Populism answers three key questions: why have radical right populists, unlike other ideological party types, long been divided in the Parliament? Why, although divisions persist, are many of them now more united than ever? And how does all this inform our understanding of the European populist radical right today? Arguing that these parties have entered a new international and transnational phase, with some trying to be 'respectable radicals' while others embrace their shared populism, McDonnell and Werner shed new light on the past, present and future of one of the most important political phenomena of twenty-first-century Europe.Trade Review‘An excellent addition to the literature on populism.’ -- CHOICE'Highly original, interesting and accessible. McDonnell and Werner have produced the first comparative study of the most important form of international collaboration of populist radical right parties: groups within the European Parliament.' -- Cas Mudde, Stanley Wade Shelton UGAF Professor of International Affairs, University of Georgia; co-author of 'Populism: A Very Short Introduction' and author of 'On Extremism and Democracy in Europe''Simply the most comprehensive and compelling work on the radical right at the European level. Theoretically elegant, grounded in rich empirical scholarship, methodologically balanced, and well written — a must-read for anyone interested in international radical right cooperation.' -- Reinhard Heinisch, Professor of Comparative Austrian Politics and Chair of Political Science and Sociology, University of Salzburg'This book is ambitious, compelling and well-executed, challenging the common wisdom that, ultimately, these parties can’t cooperate and communicating that message in reader-friendly prose.' -- Tim Bale, Professor of Politics, Queen Mary, University of London, and author of 'European Politics: A Comparative Introduction''This excellent book, written by two leading researchers on populist parties, is on the cutting edge of the new ‘international’ turn in populism studies. Work on radical right parties has long been focused on explaining their origins and impact on domestic politics. This book is a significant contribution to a new research agenda that focuses on the international dimensions. It is a perfectly timed and significant contribution to the debate.' -- Christopher Bickerton, Reader in Modern European Politics, University of Cambridge, and author of 'European Integration: From Nation-States to Member States'

Book SynopsisThis timely and significant book provides a comprehensive overview of right-wing ideology and policy-making in the years since Ronald Reagan left office, and an explanation of the reasons why the Republicans, the 'party of Reagan', turned towards Donald Trump. The authors assess the ways in which the Reagan legacy, rather than the empirical realities of his tenure, has impacted economic, social and cultural policy formation and conservative efforts at reshaping the United States. They also evaluate the changing relationships between different ideological currents on the right. Against this background, The American Right after Reagan discusses Trump's insurgent populism and the profound tensions that have marked his presidency. This thought-provoking book will prove invaluable to scholars in political science and American Studies, in particular those studying US domestic or foreign policy during this period. It will also provide useful insights for those seeking to understand the recent rise of right-wing populism and Trump's ascendancy.Trade Review'Three eminent scholars offer a cogent but nuanced analysis of the successes and frustrations of the American right since the 1980s. Their insightful perspectives on conservatism's policy and political development over the last quarter-century builds up to a riveting assessment of the Trump administration's contributions to and deviations from the cause. Engagingly written and very well researched, this volume should be essential reading for scholars and students of America's contemporary politics and recent political history.' --Iwan Morgan, University College London, UK'The American Right after Reagan measures the aftershocks of the ''Reagan revolution'' in comprehensive and often counterintuitive ways, mapping where the philosophical and substantive shifts of the 1980s still hold sway and where they have eroded. The book pushes well beyond the standard dogma of the era, and brings sharp theoretical analysis as well as a wide range of empirical scholarship to bear on key aspects of contemporary policymaking and partisanship. In so doing the authors settle some old arguments - but better yet, spark many new ones.' --Andrew Rudalevige, Bowdoin College, US'In The American Right after Reagan, three distinguished scholars - Edward Ashbee, John Dumbrell and Alex Waddan - examine the legacy of Ronald Reagan. In a wide-ranging work, conservative ideology and the Republican Party record on economic and social policy, the ''culture wars'', and foreign affairs are explored. This book, one of the very best histories of modern conservatism in America that I have read, explains with verve and perspicacity how the development of Republican Party politics since Reagan culminated in the election of Donald Trump. In sharp contrast to the idea that Trump's presidency has been orthodox in terms of policy, these authors make a forceful argument that Trump in fact represents an important break from conservative traditions since Reagan. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars and the general public. I recommend it with enormous enthusiasm and admiration.' --Mark White, Queen Mary University of London, UKTable of ContentsContents: 1. Introduction: the legacy of the Reagan revolution 2. Book SynopsisThe benefits of globalization have long been trumpeted by right-wing and centre-left politicians and is enshrined in the neoliberal consensus of western democracies. However, in recent years, conservative rhetoric has turned increasingly anti-globalization. Ray Kiely examines this new trend, in particular the discourse of “winners” and “losers” of globalization that has emerged since the financial crisis, and which has been used by conservative politicians in the United States and the UK to reflect real and imagined threats to domestic economies and national identity. The book examines new US and UK conservative movements (alongside earlier traditions) and the development of conservative ideas, in particular projects for renewal, that have shaped responses to globalization that challenge neoliberal and third way approaches. The nostalgia for a former supposed age of economic and societal harmony, which has characterized this conservative anti-globalization response is given particular attention. The popular mantras of deregulation and economic nationalism that loomed large in both the election of Donald Trump and the UK’s Brexit vote are shown to be potent examples of the success of this new conservative (anti-)globalization rhetoric. As well as examining the changing nature of Anglo-American conservatism, the book also offers an insightful account of the wider resurgence of populism.Table of Contents1. Introduction2. The nature of conservative ideology is and will continue to be warmly contested. In this short history, Mark Garnett contends that the disagreements have been particularly strong in the instance of British conservatism because the ideological label continues to be used by a prominent political party. Whether hostile or friendly in intent, commentators on conservatism have found it difficult to avoid the assumption that British "conservatism" must, at all times, be reflected at least to some degree in the policy platforms of the Conservative Party. This book presents an account of British conservatism which avoids the usual confusion between the ideology and the stated principles of a party which prides itself on an ability to change its views according to circumstances. It shows, since the Tory Party adopted the name "Conservative" in the 1830s it has become increasingly difficult to associate its varying positions with a coherent "conservative" position, so that it is more profitable to discuss its ideological history from the perspective of liberalism and nationalism. This argument is presented by tracing the histories of the party and the ideology in separate chapters, whose themes and cast of characters rarely coincide.

Book SynopsisMargaret Thatcher, prime minister between 1979 and 1990, was and continues to be a hugely divisive figure in Britain. Her influence on British politics has long outlived her, with the Conservative Party becoming steadily more Thatcherite than it was under her leadership, especially on economic issues. Policies that support privatization, curbs on trade unions and employment rights (to promote further labour market flexibility), reduction in welfare provision, the replacement of collectivism with individualism, and the marketization of public services, including the NHS and education, are all Thatcherism in practice, and still continue today. Peter Dorey offers a lively analysis of how Thatcherism became an ideology for politics to conjure with, its relationship with its eponymous leader and with the Conservative Party, as well as the long-term implications for the British people. He argues that the radical modernization of Britain that started under Thatcher’s leadership in the 1980s has created the conditions that have led to the polarization of British society today; a process that was profoundly unconservative in its values and approach, destabilizing institutions which Conservatives once deemed sacrosanct, and replacing continuity and solidity with constant change and competition.Trade ReviewDorey’s superbly researched account is a concise, full 360-degree study of the inexorable rise of Thatcherism and its erosion of traditional Conservatism. He shows clearly and crisply why her ideological legacy remains so important to the Conservative Party and to anyone who studies it. -- Louise Thompson, University of ManchesterAn outstanding book that deserves to be widely read. Pete Dorey has expertly combined historical and political analysis to provide a definitive and highly engaging account of the complexities and contradictions of the Thatcher project. The regulation of speech is a matter that is typically dealt with arbitrarily without there being any obvious principled basis for the decisions that are made. Is hate speech, so-called, a form of free speech? What of blasphemy, in either its ancient or contemporary forms? Should certain forms of speech be mandatory? As with free speech, we're all in favour of tolerance except when we''re not! Tolerance is increasingly coming to seem, well, intolerable and new and improved forms of intolerance are everywhere on the rise, not least as embodied in the currently fashionable doctrines of diversity, inclusion and equality. In ZAP, Gerard Casey presents a critical and unified approach to both free speech and tolerance based on the Zero Aggression Principle, keeping the critical discussion topical and grounded by reference to current events.

Book SynopsisIn this landmark book, Alexander Zevin looks at the development of modern liberalism by examining the long history of the Economist newspaper, which, since 1843, has been the most tireless - and internationally influential - champion of the liberal cause anywhere in the world. But what exactly is liberalism, and how has its message evolved?Liberalism at Large examines a political ideology on the move as it confronts the challenges that classical doctrine left unresolved: the rise of democracy, the expansion of empire, the ascendancy of high finance. Contact with such momentous forces was never going to leave the proponents of liberal values unchanged. Zevin holds a mirror to the politics - and personalities - of Economist editors past and present, from Victorian banker-essayists James Wilson and Walter Bagehot to latter-day eminences Bill Emmott and Zanny Minton Beddoes.Today, neither economic crisis at home nor permanent warfare abroad has dimmed the Economist's belief in unfettered markets, limited government, and a free hand for the West. Confidante to the powerful, emissary for the financial sector, portal onto international affairs, the bestselling newsweekly shapes the world its readers - as well as everyone else - inhabit. This is the first critical biography of one of the architects of a liberal world order now under increasing strain.Trade ReviewA highly-readable history of one of the world's most influential publications - and an important contribution to the history of political thought -- Gideon Rachman, Chief Foreign Affairs Commentator * Financial Times *The Economist has vigorously claimed to be advancing the liberal cause since its founding. Zevin takes it at its word, telling the story not only of the magazine itself but also of its impact on world affairs. Having evidently mastered the magazine's archives, he commands a deep knowledge of its inner workings. The Economist emerges as a force that - thanks to the military, cultural and economic power of Britain and, later, America - can truly be said to have made the modern world, if not in the way that many liberals would suppose -- Pankaj Mishra * New Yorker *Sharp, engaging and deeply researched, Liberalism at Large reveals the profound contradictions at the heart of one of themost influential strands of liberalism - its supposed aversion to state power and consistent embrace of imperial might -- Jennifer Pitts, Professor of Political Science, University of ChicagoWritten with analytical rigour, narrative flair and formidably marshalled scepticism, Liberalism at Large is by some way the most ambitious and compelling history of a newspaper or magazine that I have read -- David Kynaston, author of The City of London and Modernity BritainLiberalism at Large has to be the most fascinating, and the best-written, engagement with the idea-that-nobody-ever-defines. Our understanding of liberalism, and of its historical and ideological power, is permanently changed, and immeasurably for the better -- Geoff Mann, author of In the Long Run We Are All DeadMuch more than a history of a single journal, Liberalism at Large gives us a compelling counter-history of key globalplayers, events and ideologies from imperialism and free trade to liberalism and neoliberalism. Absorbing and informative -- Priyamvada Gopal, author of Insurgent EmpireWhat a brilliant idea and what a brilliant book. Zevin offers a critical and nuanced account of the ever-changing liberalism promoted by the Economist -- Donald Sassoon, author of The Anxious TriumphMeticulous and beautifully written, Liberalism at Large should be read by anyone interested in "actually existing liberalism", in other words liberalism as it was conceived by the people who defined and promoted it, and not an idealized version based on some pre-determined canon of "great thinkers". Fascinating and often disturbing -- Helena Rosenblatt, author of The Lost History of LiberalismLiberalism at Large is...well-paced and engagingly written all the way through. The particular lens acts as a rather inspired way of looking at the history of Anglo-American capitalism. Zevin...is able to tell a fascinating story of [the Economist] and its relationship to the system it has championed for close to two hundred years now. * Counterfire *Well-written and well-organized, Zevin's book gives us fresh insight into the evolution of the doctrine of liberalism * Journal of European Economic History *

Book Synopsis Elections always have consequences, but the 2017 Bundestag election in Germany proved particularly consequential. With political upheaval across the globe—notably in Britain and the USA—it was vital to European and global order that Germany remain stable. And it did through the re-election of Angela Merkel as chancellor, now in her fourth term. Just under the surface, however, instability is mounting—exemplified by the entry of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) as the largest opposition party, the decline of the Social Democrats, the ever-restive Bavarians, and the growing factionalism within the Christian Democratic Union as the Merkel era comes to an end. Paying special attention to the rise of the AfD, this volume delves into the campaign, leading political figures, the structure of the electorate, the state of the parties, the media environment, coalition negotiations, and policy impacts.Trade Review “The volume should not only be of interest to an international audience, but also fertilize the German-language discourse due to its specific thematic composition and international perspective.” • Zeitschrift für ParlamentsfragenTable of Contents Introduction: Merkeldämmerung Eric Langenbacher Chapter 1. Book SynopsisDonald Trump has faced unprecedented opposition from members of his own party to his candidacy, election, and presidency. This opposition, known collectively as #NeverTrump Republicans, opposes Trump for a variety of reasons, but is united in its assessment that he is temperamentally unfit to be president. The contributors in The Republican Resistance: #NeverTrump Conservatives and the Future of the GOP detail the origins of this movement, with particular focus on the 2016 election cycle, and explore how #NeverTrump opponents have continued their resistance through the Trump presidency. The contributors argue that the Trump presidency and the #NeverTrump opposition represent a key feature of modern American politics in which both major American political parties must contend: the rise of a populist insurgency intent on overtaking the party from within. The Republican Resistance examines the implications of this populist revolt on the GOP and the challenges of embracing demographic and structural realities on the one hand while catering to a political base built to oppose those trends on the other.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Resisting Trump: Origins of #NeverTrump and the Battle for the Soul of the GOP, Andrew L. Book SynopsisThe election of Donald Trump as President of the United States in November 2016 was a political earthquake, one supporters and detractors alike agree has changed the course of history. The policy implications have been stark and will continue well beyond his presidency. The political implications have been perhaps even more drastic—for both political parties. Trump has shaken the 40-year-old coalition of traditional conservatives, orthodox religious voters, and free-market libertarians that has long-composed the Republican Party. The Republican Resistance: #NeverTrump Conservatives and the Future of the GOP explores the members of that coalition, especially traditional, establishment-oriented Republicans and conservative intellectuals who opposed his candidacy, who generally still oppose his presidency, and who represent the elite-in-waiting that believes it will have to rebuild the GOP when the Trump coalition implodes. In the end, The Republican Resistance argues that the Trump presidency and the #NeverTrump countermovement reflect key features of modern American politics which both major political parties must contend: the rise of a populist insurgency intent on overtaking the parties from within and challenges of embracing demographic and structural realities on the one hand while catering to a political base often built to oppose those trends on the other.Trade ReviewThese ten essays, contributed by eleven political scientists and edited with an introduction by Pieper and DeWitt, amount to a preliminary assessment of the predicament and prospects of so-called never-Trump Republicans.... The first six contributions attempt to describe the scope of diffuse anti-Trumpism at various levels of government and in the press, at think tanks, and within the Republican establishment. The remaining essays identify ways that Trump's campaign and presidency violated essential conservative principles, driving people into opposition.... Based primarily on public and journalistic sources, this work [provides] a starting place for...research on the topic. • Hungary in State of Exception: Authoritarian

Lexington Books Hungary in State of Exception: Authoritarian

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHungary in State of Exception seeks to analyze the transboundary exchange of political and economic ideas through the global neoliberal hegemonic struggle. Neoliberalism, as a economic and political ideology, defined the history of Hungary not just in the 21st century, but in the troubled 20th century. Eastern Europe played a crucial role in neoliberalism’s rise to control globalized capitalism, and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have constantly an incubator of and experimental laboratory for new types of neoliberal capitalism. Antal arguesthat neoliberalism, like populism, is historically embedded in Hungarian political history, its the political form is economic and governmental exceptionalism. This book reveals the common history of Western- and Eastern-style neoliberalism from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the contemporary COVID-19 crisis. Without emphasis on the century of neoliberalization of CEE, the contemporary rise of regional authoritarianism cannot be understood. Antal also details the relationship between Orbán’s rise and contemporary neoliberal politics in CEE. Trade ReviewAnyone with an interest in the fate of Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe will enjoy reading Antal's work, which contains many original observations and analyses. Understanding how neoliberalism integrates into Central and Eastern Europe and became a Zeitgeist is a key issue from a historical perspective and also for the contemporary Hungarian situation. Neoliberalization has been under-researched in many respects and the volume aims to fill this gap with the tools of critical thinking. It also highlights how the management of the COVID crisis is deeply embedded in the neoliberal political and economic-social 'tradition'. This work, which is essentially a history of ideas, shows how Hungary has contributed to the development of neoliberalism, first and foremost by constantly suspending normality. The book is an important document of independent, autonomous thinking. I can only recommend reading it. -- Tamás Krausz, author of Reconstructing Lenin: An Intellectual BiographyIn this overarching political history, Antal weaves together insights from an impressively large body of scholarship. He convincingly demonstrates that in the last 50 years, neoliberalism has been the norm throughout Hungary's three different political regimes. The book also serves as a helpful guide for scholars and students, offering a comprehensive introduction to neoliberalism and Hungary's political economy. -- Gabor Scheiring, Bocconi UniversityIn this exciting book, Antal, a leading Hungarian political theorist, argues that neoliberalism is far more than just a recent trend: It is a historically embedded phenomenon in the eastern part of Europe. Antal not only demonstrates that neoliberalism is inseparable from biopolitics and from the state of exception, but he argues convincingly that neoliberalization is a strategy of disruption, not of stabilization. -- András Bozóki, Central European University, ViennaTable of ContentsIntroduction: Historically Embedded Neoliberalism and Exceptional Measures in HungaryChapter 1: The Neoliberalism as a Permanent State of ExceptionChapter 2 The Heritage of the Habsburg Empire: The Historical Impact of NeoliberalismChapter 3 Neoliberalization of State SocialismChapter 4 The Neoliberalization of 1989 and the Collapse of System of Regime ChangeChapter 5 Authoritarian Populism, Neoliberalism and Exceptional MeasuresConclusion: The Semi-Peripheral Fate: Neoliberalism and Authoritarian Populism

Book SynopsisThis insightful book sheds light on three competing ideological windows on the world: conservatism, liberalism and socialism. David Reisman explores the importance of these perspectives not only to generating public policy, but also in our capacity to explain the very nature of reality.Surveying the diversity of beliefs that govern and guide contemporary society, Reisman illustrates the pre-eminence of three all-encompassing meta-ideologies that capture heterogenous philosophies. The book traces the history of these meta-ideologies through key figures and moments in their development, illuminating the paradox at the heart of political beings: the conceptual wedding of independence and integration. Refusing a partisan perspective, Reisman argues in favour of a tolerant vision of society that promotes understanding as an avenue by which to achieve the peaceable coexistence of plurality and diversity. Offering a clear, intellectual and unbiased presentation of contemporary political philosophy, this book is crucial reading for researchers and students of social and political thought, particularly those focusing on ideology and the history of philosophy. Tacitly blaming Nehruvian welfarism of the time for the moral decline of the nation, the Amar Chitra Katha emerged as a literary articulation of the Indian right’s Hindu-nationalist ideology in a modern, bourgeois guise. To renew Hindutva hegemony, the comic series gave orthodox ideas a new sheen, both in its form and content, merging Western comic styles with Indian visual storytelling traditions on the one hand, and combining mythological characters with political figureheads into harmonious narratives on the other—making it difficult to sift history from myths and legends. Sreenivas deftly argues that these mythological-political tales emphasized the instructive rather than the informative potential of history, encouraging neoliberal values such as merit and hard work while ignoring caste or class as systemic issues.

Book SynopsisLate Capitalism is the first major synthesis to have been produced by the contemporary revival of Marxist economics. It represents, in fact, the only systematic attempt so far ever made to combine the general theory of the ‘laws of motion’ of the capitalist mode of production developed by Marx with the concrete history of capitalism in the twentieth century. A landmark in Marxist economic literature, Late Capitalism is specifically designed to explain the international recession of the 1970s and is an invaluable guide to understanding the nature of the world economy today. This edition includes a new introduction by Cédric Durand assessing the book’s continued relevance.

Book SynopsisDespite winning the December 2019 General Election, the Conservative parliamentary party is a moribund organisation. It no longer speaks for, or to, the British people. Its leadership has sacrificed the long-standing commitment to the Union to 'Get Brexit Done'. And beyond this, it is an intellectual vacuum, propped up by half-baked doctrine and magical thinking. Falling Down offers an explanation for how the Tory party came to position itself on the edge of the precipice and offers a series of answers to a question seldom addressed: as the party is poised to press the self-destruct button, what kind of role and future can it have? This tipping point has been a long time coming and Burton-Cartledge offers critical analysis to this narrative. Since the era of Thatcherism, the Tories have struggled to find a popular vision for the United Kingdom. At the same time, their members have become increasingly old. Their values have not been adopted by the younger voters. The coalition between the countryside and the City interests is under pressure, and the latter is split by Brexit. The Tories are locked into a declinist spiral, and with their voters not replacing themselves the party is more dependent on a split opposition - putting into question their continued viability as the favoured vehicle of British capital.Trade ReviewA masterful account of the long view. Fewer people are benefitting from Conservative policies each decade. The party then has to rely more and more on the fears of older voters for support. Book SynopsisToday, it is not a question of if, but when? What we are watching is the collapse of the most successful political party in Europe. Despite winning the December 2019 General Election, the parliamentary conservative and unionist party is facing its own demise. It no longer speaks for, or to, the British people. Its leadership has sacrificed the long-standing commitment to the Union to 'Get Brexit Done'. And beyond this, it is an intellectual vacuum, propped up by half-baked doctrine and magical thinking. Burton-Cartlege's account starts with the Thatcher era, and show that swiftly the party struggled to find a popular vision for the United Kingdom. He charts the flaws an failings of each successive leader, all the way to Sunak. He also examines the state of the membership and shows that they have become increasingly old. Their values have not been adopted by the younger voters, who are unable to share the benefits. Furthermore, the coalition between the countryside and the City interests is under pressure, and the latter is split by Brexit.Trade ReviewA masterful account of the long view. Book SynopsisThis work analyses the impact of the publications written by the economist, jurist, administrator and historian José da Silva Lisboa, the future Viscount of Cairu, from 1821 to 1822, on the events that led to the Independence of Brazil in 1822. It reassesses the many interpretations of his role throughout the period, repositioning him among those who are part of the broad reformist Catholic Enlightenment. Although a supporter of Brazilian autonomy, a fierce critic of the Cortes of Lisbon and an important figure in the events that unfolded after the departure of Dom João VI from Rio de Janeiro in 1821, he would not openly embrace the Independence from the United Kingdom with Portugal and would instead work towards a solution that would encompass Brazil’s autonomy within a Portuguese Empire, which did not take place.Trade ReviewBy inquiring into José da Silva Lisboa’s role in the process of Independence, Guilherme Celestino seeks to re-evaluate the conventional position he has occupied for such a long time in Brazilian historiography – a conservative or a reactionary – in order to give a new interpretation of the role played by this man. And so, a convinced monarchist emerges, defender of the House of Braganza, who was guided by the Portuguese Enlightenment preaching the renewal of institutions through gradual reform. A book destined to be a reference for studies on the Independence period and on Silva Lisboa’s own thinking’ — Lucia Bastos P. Neves, Professor of Modern History at Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, BrazilThe histories of Ibero-American independences have been too attached to analyses tied to the Anglo-Saxon paradigm of the “era of revolutions.” Celestino’s book is in this sense a breath of fresh air, not only because it suggests alternatives to the interpretative canon but also because it opens new avenues for thinking about and articulating concepts and facts that have been conventionally contested. An original, daring and undoubtedly stimulating work’ — Isabel Corrêa da Silva, Research Fellow at Instituto Ciências Sociais, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal.Guilherme Celestino’s exquisite work is fundamental for us to understand several crossroads of Brazilian society, both at the beginning of the Empire and today. Silva Lisboa is more present than ever, in many representations and practices of today. Guilherme escapes the spectrum of pragmatic and conservative evocations of the Viscount of Cairu, to observe him almost side by side, as he invited the economist to walk in the garden of the modern approach and highly qualified research, a work developed with great responsibility.’ — Carlos de Faria Jr., Lecturer of Economic History and Economic Formation of Brazil, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, BrazilTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Foreword; José da Silva Lisboa and the Brazilian Independence Revisited: Introduction and Argument; Chapter One Brazil and Silva Lisboa in Context; Chapter Two Constitutionalism before the Fico 1821–1822; Chapter Three Reclamação Do Brasil: Paving the Way for Independence without Supporting It ; Chapter Four The Pamphlets Which Failed to Keep History under Control; Conclusion: Ideas that Shaped Brazilian History; Bibliography; Index
