Book SynopsisThis book addresses one of the most exciting and innovative developments within higher education: the rise in prominence of the creative arts and the accelerating recognition that creative practice is a form of research. The book considers how creative practice can lead to research insights through what is often known as practice-led research. But unlike other books on practice-led research, it balances this with discussion of how research can impact positively on creative practice through research-led practice. The editors posit an iterative and web-like relationship between practice and research. Essays within the book cover a wide range of disciplines including creative writing, dance, music, theatre, film and new media, and the contributors are from the UK, US, Canada and Australia. The subject is approached from numerous angles: the authors discuss methodologies of practice-led research and research-led practice, their own creative work as a form of research, research training for creative practitioners, researchers, students in the creative arts and university leaders.Table of ContentsIntroduction; 1. SAGE Publications, Inc Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Methods
Book SynopsisFocusing on research designs for projects that collect both qualitative and quantitative data, this practical book discusses strategies for bringing qualitative and quantitative methods together so that their combined strengths accomplish more than is possible with a single method. The approach is broadly interdisciplinary, reflecting the interest in mixed methods research of social scientists from anthropology, communication, criminal justice, education, evaluation, nursing, organizational behavior, psychology, political science, public administration, public health, sociology, social work, and urban studies. In contrast to an anything goes approach or a naïve hope that two methods are better than one, the author argues that projects using mixed methods must pay even more attention to research design than single method approaches. The book's practical emphasis on mixed methods makes it useful both to active researchers and to students who intend to pursue such a career.Trade Review"Key strengths are clarity of presentation, functional focus, limited technical treatment, practical examples, compact length, emphasis on research design, and the chapter on Pragmatism, which is [a] great way around the paradigm debates that often color the use [of] mixed methods." -- D. Patrick Lenihan"The research examples are very clear and will help students scope and develop their dissertation designs. . . . A second major strength is the emphasis on examples from program interventions and policy evaluation. This alone makes this text a good alternative textbook in program evaluation." -- A. Victor Ferreros"Figures are very clear, discussion of pragmatism is thorough, and the writing style is clear and accessible." -- Laura MeyerTable of ContentsChapter 1. Cambridge University Press The House that Fox News Built
Book SynopsisThe influence of partisan news is presumed to be powerful, but evidence for its effects on political elites is limited, often based more on anecdotes than science. Using a rigorous quasi-experimental research design, observational data, and open science practices, this book carefully demonstrates how the re-emergence and rise of partisan cable news in the US affected the behavior of political elites during the rise and proliferation of Fox News across media markets between 1996 and 2010. Despite widespread concerns over the ills of partisan news, evidence provides a nuanced, albeit cautionary tale. On one hand, findings suggest that the rise of Fox indeed changed elite political behavior in recent decades. At the same time, the limited conditions under which Fox News'' influence occurred suggests that concerns about the network''s power may be overstated.

Taylor & Francis Postdigital Play and Global Education
Book SynopsisPostdigital Play and Global Education: Reconfiguring Research is a re-turn to a large-scale, international project on childrenâs digital play. Adopting postqualitative and posthumanist theories, research practices are reconfigured all the way down from what counts as âdataâ, âtoolsâ, âinstrumentsâ, âtranscriptionâ, research sitesâ, âresearchersâ, to notions of responsibility and accountability in qualitative research. Through a series of vignettes involving complex human and more-than-human collaborators (e.g., GoPros, octopus, avatars, diaries, sackball, LEGO bricks), the authors challenge who and what can be playful and creative across contexts in the global north and global south. The diffractive methodology enacted interrupts Western developmental notions of agency that are dominant in research involving young children. The concept of âpostdigitalâ offers fresh opportunities to disrupt dominant understandings of childrenâs play. Play emerges as an enigmatic and shape-shifting human and more-than-human agentic force that operates beyond digital/non-digital, online/ offline binaries. By attuning to race, gender, age and language, invisible and colonising aspects of postdigital worldings the authors show how global education research can be reimagined through a posthumanist decentering of children without erasure.Postdigital Play and Global Education puts into practice Karen Baradâs agential realism, but also a range of postdevelopmental and posthumanist writings from diverse fields. The book will be of particular interest to researchers looking for guidance to enact agential realist and posthumanist philosophies in research involving young children.

This accessible textbook will serve a broad audience, from students, researchers or professionals looking to improve their Trade Review'We will never have a textbook of statistics for biologists that satisfies everybody. However, this book may come closest. It is based on many years of field research and the teaching of statistical methods by both authors. All useful classic and advanced statistical concepts and methods are explained and illustrated with data examples and R programming procedures. Besides traditional topics that are covered in the premier textbooks of biometry/biostatistics (e.g. R. R. Sokal & F. J. Rohlf, J. H. Zar), two extensive chapters on multivariate methods in classification and ordination add to the strength of this book. The text was originally published in Czech in 2016. The English edition has been substantially updated and two new chapters 'Survival Analysis' and 'Classification and Regression Trees' have been added. The book will be essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students, professional researchers, and informed managers of natural resources.' Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Mixed Methods Research
Book SynopsisIn this book, Mertens provides a brief history of the emergence of mixed methods research and numerous examples to illustrate its application in different disciplines and geographic areas. Mixed methods approaches offer researchers an exciting opportunity to explore new combinations of methods in diverse contexts: the design possibilities are endless and can be incorporated in many different approaches. The book presents case studies to illustrate different philosophical lenses for mixed methods design, including post-positivism, constructivism, pragmatism, transformative, Indigenous, and dialectical pluralism. The book features interviews with researchers about their experiences and practices. They discuss a variety of topics including innovative research design, use of technology and big data, preparation of mixed methods researchers, and how this research can contribute to a more just and equitable future.Trade ReviewThis book introduces multiple lenses to examine a social phenomenon using mixed methods with case study examples. Reflecting issues and ethical values of the 21st century, the book emphasizes cultural sensitivity and inclusiveness in the research process. The author's clear writing makes it easy for non-native English readers to understand. * Hisako Kakai, Professor of International Communication, Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan *By taking the intriguing route of introducing readers to options in research design through the lens of paradigmatic assumptions, Mertens renders accessible this often-daunting component of mixed methods research. Numerous case studies with a social justice orientation, where the focus is on the place and construction of stakeholder–community–interdisciplinary relationships, illustrate these options. * Pat Bazeley, Adjunct Professor, Western Sydney University, Australia *Table of ContentsSeries Foreword 1.
