Cambridge University Press Church State and Family
Book SynopsisThis book defends the fundamental place of the marital family in modern liberal societies. While applauding modern sexual freedoms, John Witte, Jr also defends the traditional Western teaching that the marital family is an essential cradle of conscience, chrysalis of care, and cornerstone of ordered liberty. He thus urges churches, states, and other social institutions to protect and promote the marital family. He encourages reticent churches to embrace the rights of women and children, as Christians have long taught, and encourages modern states to promote responsible sexual freedom and family relations, as liberals have long said. He counsels modern churches and states to share in family law governance, and to resist recent efforts to privatize, abolish, or radically expand the marital family sphere. Witte also invites fellow citizens to end their bitter battles over same-sex marriage and tend to the vast family field that urgently needs concerted attention and action.Trade Review'It is hard to imagine a better researched, better balanced, more clearly argued - but also more charitable - defense of what John Witte, Jr calls the traditional 'marital family'. Witte a legal scholar of unique historical insight, here spells out clearly why a culture of 'stable monogamous marriages' harmonizes contractual, spiritual, natural, social, communicative, and economic realities - while offering special protection for women, children, and the poor of whatever gender, race, or class. It is a compelling book of landmark dimensions.' Mark A. Noll, McAnaney Professor of History Emeritus, University of Notre Dame'The context of this engrossing, learned and far-ranging text is the way much of traditional family law has been elbowed aside in favor of new cultural and constitutional norms of sexual freedom, privacy and autonomy. For his encyclopedic knowledge and incisiveness, John Witte, Jr has no equal, and this is a fair-minded and wise attempt at the re-integration of state and faith-based institutions. I commend it unreservedly.' Iain R. Torrance, President Emeritus of Princeton Theological Seminary'Over many years, John Witte, Jr has made a profound contribution to global scholarship and debate on law and religion. He continues to do so, with great energy and insight, in this superb book. Written in the highest academic traditions of argument and counter-argument, this book justly deserves to become an enduring stimulus for debate on the importance of the marital family in human life.' Norman Doe, Cardiff University'Vintage Witte! Drawing on his deep wells of scholarship, and writing with characteristic clarity and charity, he offers church, state, and society a reasoned account and constructive model of the marital family as a continuing private and public good, worthy of voluntary commitment and legal support.' William Storrar, Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey'I am convinced that John Witte, Jr's circumspect research, careful evaluations and well-balanced arguments will not only provoke lively and fruitful discussions, but will also encourage the support and development of good and joy-generating practices in religious and secular communities.' Michael Welker, University of Heidelberg'Church, State, and Family: Reconciling Traditional Teachings and Modern Liberties is an extraordinary work of meticulous scholarship and a part of the Cambridge Studies in Law and Christianity. While an exceptional and unreservedly recommended addition to seminary, college and university library Contemporary Christian Doctrinal Issues collections and supplemental curriculum studies lists, it should be noted for students, academia, clergy, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject.' Jack Mason, Midwest Book Review'… attempts the impossible task of providing a valuable and nuanced perspective on the relationship between religious and secular law governing family in the United States and other common law counties … is a satisfying compromise and a worthy read.' Michael J. Broyde, Journal of Law and Religion'… remarkable rereading and prodigious reconstruction …' Mark D. Jordan, Journal of Law and Religion'John Witte offers a masterful overview of the history of religious and political thought about marriage in the West … Church, State, and Family offers a robust defense of (mostly) traditional ideas about marriage and family, grounded equally in theological doctrine, moral and political theory, and contemporary empirical research.' Brian H. Bix, Journal of Law and Religion'… impressively wide-ranging and admirably countercultural … he has in this book offered us a highly informative, thoroughly well-documented, and penetratingly searching analysis of an inescapably controversial case of contemporary state action.' Jonathan Chaplin, Journal of Law and Religion'Church, State, and Family provides an engaging argument for the importance of family to religion and to civil society … The book as a whole is an intellectual tour de force … will be an enduring book …' Frank S. Little, Brown & Company Disobedient Women: How a Small Group of Faithful
Book SynopsisA NATIONAL BESTSELLER!Journalist Sarah Stankorb outlines how access to the internet-its networks, freedom of expression, and resources for deeply researching and reporting on powerful church figures-allowed women to begin dismantling the false authority of evangelical communities that had long demanded their submission.A generation of American Christian girls was taught submitting to men is God's will. They were taught not to question the men in their families or their pastors. They were told to remain sexually pure and trained to feel shame if a man was tempted. Some of these girls were abused and assaulted. Some made to shrink down so small they became a shadow of themselves. To question their leaders was to question God.All the while, their male leaders built fiefdoms from megachurches and sprawling ministries. They influenced politics and policy. To protect their church's influence, these men covered up and hid abuse. American Christian patriarchy, as it rose in political power and cultural sway over the past four decades, hurt many faithful believers. Millions of Americans abandoned churches they once loved.Yet among those who stayed (and a few who still loved the church they fled), a brave group of women spoke up. They built online megaphones, using the democratizing power of technology to create long-overdue change. In Disobedient Women, journalist Sarah Stankorb gives long-overdue recognition for these everyday women as leaders and as voices for a different sort of faith. Their work has driven journalists to help bring abuse stories to national attention. Stankorb weaves together the efforts of these courageous voices in order to present a full, layered portrait of the treatment of women and the fight for change within the modern American church.Disobedient Women is not just a look at the women who have used the internet to bring down the religious power structures that were meant to keep them quiet, but also a picture of the large-scale changes that are happening within evangelical culture regarding women's roles, ultimately underscoring the ways technology has created a place for women to challenge traditional institutions from within.

Canterbury Press Norwich Light from Within: Perspective on the Biblical
Book SynopsisA new and imaginative approach to the Bible as the archetypal saga of how God works among and within people at different stages of their growth toward spiritual maturity, showing how the Christian faith is (in Lesslie Newbigin's words) "the clue to all history — the history of the world, and the history of my own soul." The Bible is explored in the light both of depth psychology and of some years' experience of living and working in the Holy Land, where it all began, and where the biblical drama is still going on. Mission and discipleship are seen to be inextricably intertwined: something of great relevance in the Decade of Evangelism. This book will be welcomed particularly by those who work in the field of counselling and anyone concerned with growth in discipleship and with mission.

Book SynopsisWriting in response to our current “constitutional crisis,” New York Times bestselling author and Christian activist Jim Wallis urges America to return to the tenets of Jesus once again as the means to save us from the polarizing bitterness and anger of our tribal nation. In Christ in Crisis? Jim Wallis provides a path of spiritual healing and solidarity to help us heal the divide separating Americans today. Building on “Reclaiming Jesus”—the declaration he and other church leaders wrote in May 2018 to address America’s current crisis—Wallis argues that Christians have become disconnected from Jesus and need to revisit their spiritual foundations. By pointing to eight questions Jesus asked or is asked, Wallis provides a means to measure whether we are truly aligned with the moral and spiritual foundations of our Christian faith. “Christians have often remembered, re-discovere

Oxford University Press, USA Saving Souls Serving Society Understanding the Faith Factor in ChurchBased Social Ministry
Book SynopsisAs public funding for social services has been slashed, there has arisen an unprecedented interest in the potential (and dangers) of faith-based institutions as agents of social change. Now, as President Bush begins his second term, he has placed government funding of faith-based programs at the top of his domestic agenda. What distinguishes church-based from secular social activism? What is particularly religious about church-based social services? How do churches express their religious identity in the context of social services, and how does this affect their access to resources and partners? This book, based on a Lilly-funded study of fifteen Philadelphia churches with active outreach, seeks to answer these and other pressing questions surrounding this important and controversial issue. Providing a far more objective understanding of faith-based initiatives than previously available, this study will be of interest not only to scholars of sociology of religion, social work, and social policy, but to denominational leaders, non-profit professionals, social policy analysts, community development practitioners, and others with the common goal of aiding struggling communities.Trade ReviewWhereas most scholars focus on the social service side of faith-based social services, Unruh and Sider integrate the faith factor and evangelism in understanding congregational social services. They convincingly demonstrate that one cannot understand faith-based social services without understanding its faith dimensions. This is a most innovative and groundbreaking book that is a must for all those concerned with the faith-based initiative and congregational studies. * Ram A. Oxford University Press The Moral Imagination
Book SynopsisJohn Paul Lederach''s work in the field of conciliation and mediation is internationally recognized. As founding Director of the Conflict Transformation Program and Institute of Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, he has provided consultation and direct mediation in a range of situations from the Miskito/Sandinista conflict in Nicaragua to Somalia, Northern Ireland, the Basque Country, and the Philippines. His influential 1997 book Building Peace has become a classic in the discipline. This new book represents his thinking and learning over the past several years. He explores the evolution of his understanding of peacebuilding by reflecting on his own experiences in the field. Peacebuilding, in his view, is both a learned skill and an art. Finding this art, he says, requires a worldview shift. Conflict professionals must envision their work as a creative act - an exercise of what Lederach terms the ''moral imagination.''Trade ReviewToday the telecommunications and transport revolution has made the world a smaller place offering both an opportunity and challenge to the major leading countries to come together to shape the world, overcome violence and create a peaceful global community. John Paul Lederach presents a powerful case for the use of the moral imagination in rising to this challenge, thus creating authentic new possibilities. This book provides a valuable contribution to peacebuilding literature and I welcome it wholeheartedly. * John Hume, Winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace *This is a wonderful book it resonated, provoked and exhilarated me, challenging me to think very carefully and deeply about why peace builders do what they do. It also offers some profound compass points for direction which may help to keep many of us sane and focused in the midst of the chaos and violence that so often makes up our world. * Mari Fitzduff, Brandeis University *The Moral Imagination is an eloquent and personal meditation on the challenge of peacebuilding by one of the fields most insightful theorists and practitioners. Professor Lederach correctly observes that the years following the tragedy of September 11, 2001, represent a precious opportunity to address underlying cycles of violence and insecurity, locally and globally. It will take courage and creativity, but it is an opportunity we must not let pass us by. * Jimmy Carter, Chairman, The Carter Center *Much exists in the conflict resolution literature about method and technique, little about art and soul. John Paul Lederach, a theorist of great insight who also happens to be a practitioner of high skill, brings us deep into his own process of learning and the results are marvelous. He offers us a rich fare of insights, stories and metaphors that captivate the moral imagination this world so badly needs. Consider this book a precious treat! * William Ury, co-author of Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In and author of The Third Side: Why We Fight and How We Can Stop *In its depth of wisdom regarding the dynamics of soul, spirit and society that lead good people to become effective practitioners of conflict transformation in war zones, The Moral Imagination could serve as the magnificent capstone to a life's work. The thrilling fact, however, is that Lederach stands not at the end but at the midpoint of a remarkable journey of conciliation, peacebuilding and ethical reflection. This book is a milestone in that journey; there is nothing quite like it in the literature of social change, peace and conflict studies, theology, ethics, and spiritualit? * for it weaves those disciplines together into a seamless, riveting whole.R. Oxford University Press This Side of Heaven
Book SynopsisIn recent years Christian scholars have become increasingly aware of their responsibility to recognize and respond to the challenges posed by ethnic and racial diversity. Similarly, historically white Christian colleges, universities, seminaries and congregations are struggling to transform themselves into communities that are welcoming to minorities and sensitive to their needs. This collection of all-new essays is meant to enable those who are engaged in these initiatives to understand the historical linkage of race, ethnicity and Christianity and to explore the ways in which constructive change can be achieved. The volume is the product of a long-term study funded by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology. In the course of this study it emerged that many Christian institutions now offer courses on race and ethnicity, but that there is very little relevant literature written from the standpoint of rigorous Christian scholarship. This book is intended to fill that gap. The authors address such questions as: What has been the history of Christian churches and leaders in relation to slavery, segregation, and apartheid? Which biblical texts and doctrines have historically been employed on behalf of racial projects, and which are relevant to the racial and ethnic crises of our day? How have religious leaders constructively engaged such crises? How do congregations shape the values, civic commitments, understandings and sensitivities of their membership? How can local congregations be sites for racial reconciliation and justice initiatives? Are there positive models for how churches and other religious institutions have helped to bring healing to racial and ethnic tensions and divides? How might Christians in the professions work to bring justice to business, education, government, and other areas of society? When good intentions fail to accomplish desired ends, how do we analyze what went wrong? Written by an interracial and interethnic team of scholars representing diverse disciplines, this book will meet a pressing need and set a new standard for the discussion of race and ethnicity in the Christian context.Trade ReviewAmply documented and with helpful bibliographies, this set will appeal to all concerned about diversity in evangelical congregations, schools, and other agencies. * Choice *This Side of Heaven is a major contribution to the study of race, ethnicity, and religion. I found an incredible wealth of knowledge and insight in the book's chapters. This is a book to use in college and seminary courses, to read in your home, and to work through in small groups. Be prepared for serious discussions, as this volume if full of hard hitting chapters that cut to the core of religion, race, and ethnicity. Strongly recommended. * Michael O. Emerson, co-author of Divided by Faith and United by Faith *This Side of Heaven is unique among Christian books on multiculturalism and race because the authors combine thier social science analysis with their theological viewpoints. * Contemporary Sociology *The editors have managed to produce a volume that has unity and clarity, combining the realistic double edge of social analysis with a courageous rereading of biblical texts and a hopeful attitude in spite of discomforting facts. In short, this book represents missiology at its best. * International Bulletin of Missionary Research *

Oxford University Press Religion and AIDS in Africa
Book SynopsisThe true role of religion in the AIDS epidemic in Africa has been debated for years: some scholars and activists claim that religious groups have provided much-needed education and assistance to those afflicted with the disease, and others argue that religion has contributed to the spread and stigmatization of AIDS. Drawing upon extensive fieldwork in Malawi and survey data from 26 other sub-Saharan African countries, Jenny Trinitapoli and Alexander Weinreb provide the first comprehensive empirical account of how religious groups affect the spread of knowledge, prevention, and mitigation of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.Trinitapoli and Weinreb identify religious patterns in the infection of HIV, examine differences across religions in risk and preventive behaviors, and discuss the role of religion in the provision of assistance to the sick and their families. Oxford University Press Disability and Christian Theology Embodied Limits and Constructive Possibilities
Book SynopsisAttention to embodiment and the religious significance of bodies is one of the most significant shifts in contemporary theology. In the midst of this, however, experiences of disability have received little attention. This book explores possibilities for theological engagement with disability, focusing on three primary alternatives: challenging existing theological models to engage with the disabled body, considering possibilities for a disability liberation theology, and exploring new theological options based on an understanding of the unsurprisingness of human limits. The overarching perspective of this book is that limits are an unavoidable aspect of being human, a fact we often seem to forget or deny. Yet not only do all humans experience limits, most of us also experience limits that take the form of disability at some point in our lives; in this way, disability is more normal than non-disability. If we take such experiences seriously and refuse to reduce them to mere instances of suffering, we discover insights that are lost when we take a perfect or generic body as our starting point for theological reflections. While possible applications of this insight are vast, this work focuses on two areas of particular interest: theological anthropology and metaphors for God. This project challenges theology to consider the undeniable diversity of human embodiment. It also enriches previous disability work by providing an alternative to the dominant medical and minority models, both of which fail to acknowledge the full diversity of disability experiences. Most notably, this project offers new images and possibilities for theological construction that attend appropriately and creatively to diversity in human embodiment.Trade ReviewCreamer's concise and engaging book entices the reader to follow her lead to a new understanding of disability and, in the process, reignites a fresh theological appreciation of the human body. * Theological Studies *Table of ContentsChapter One: Understanding Disability ; Chapter Two: Disability and Christianity ; Chapter Three: Theology and the Disabled Body ; Chapter Four: Liberation Theologies of Disability ; Chapter Five: Limits and Disability Theology ; Conclusion: Embodied Limits and Constructive Possibilities

Oxford University Press The Church for the World
Book SynopsisDrawing on the writings of German pastor-theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jennifer M. McBride constructs a groundbreaking theology of public witness for Protestant church communities in the United States. In contrast to the triumphal manner in which many Protestants have engaged the public sphere, The Church for the World shows how the church can offer a nontriumphal witness to the lordship of Christ through repentant activity in public life. After investigating current Christian conceptions of witness in the United States, McBride offers a new theology for repentance as public witness, based on Bonhoeffer''s thought concerning Christ, the world, and the church. McBride takes up Bonhoeffer''s proposal that repentance may be reinterpreted non-religiously, expanding and challenging common understandings of the concept. Finally, she examines two church communities that exemplify ecclesial commitments and practices rooted in confession of sin and repentance. Oxford University Press Ecologies of Grace
Book SynopsisChristianity struggles to show how living on Earth matters for living with God. While people of faith increasingly seek practical ways to respond to the environmental crisis, theology has had difficulty contextualizing the crisis and interpreting the responses. In Ecologies of Grace, Willis Jenkins presents a field-shaping introduction to Christian environmental ethics that offers resources for renewing theology. Observing how religious environmental practices often draw on concepts of grace, Jenkins maps the way Christian environmental strategies draw from traditions of salvation as they engage the problems of environmental ethics. By being particularly sensitive to the ways in which environmental problems are made intelligible to Christian moral experience, Jenkins guides his readers toward a fuller understanding of Christianity and ecology. University of Notre Dame Press Gay Catholic and American
Book SynopsisCatholic Greg Bourke''s profoundly moving memoir about growing up gay and overcoming discrimination in the battle for same-sex marriage in the US.In this compelling and deeply affecting memoir, Greg Bourke recounts growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, and living as a gay Catholic. The book describes Bourke's early struggles for acceptance as an out gay man living in the South during the 1980s and '90s, his unplanned transformation into an outspoken gay rights activist after being dismissed as a troop leader from the Boy Scouts of America in 2012, and his historic role as one of the named plaintiffs in the landmark United States Supreme Court decision Obergefell vs. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015. After being ousted by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), former Scoutmaster Bourke became a leader in the movement to amend antigay BSA membership policies. The Archdiocese of Louisville, because of its vigorous opposition to marriage equalityTrade Review“Recounting confrontations with the Catholic Church to the Boy Scouts and then fighting the state of Kentucky all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, Gay, Catholic, and American is the powerful story of a man and his family fighting tirelessly for positive change rooted in their belief in the fullness of charity.” —Jim Obergefell, co-author of Love Wins “Gay, Catholic, and American is a delightfully written journey of a fellow Notre Dame gay alum. I am proud to have played a small part in his journey calling for equal rights for the LGBTQ Catholic community.” —Jack Bergen, ND ’77, past chair of the Gay and Lesbian Alumni of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College “Greg Bourke’s story is one of perseverance and tenacity, of refusing to settle for less and daring to dream big. LGBTQ Catholics and those who desire more welcoming institutions will be encouraged and inspired by reading this book.” —Michael J. O’Loughlin, national correspondent for America: The Jesuit Review "Gay, Catholic, and American reads as a modern 'passion' story—it is a familial and compelling story of two faith-filled men and their two children who tasted life’s bittersweet moments in their unrelenting pursuit of justice, trusting in the power of faith to guide their journey and seeking to make fullness and completion in God’s charity palpable in our country. This story witnesses the triumph of love and perseverance." —Miguel Humberto Díaz , former United States ambassador to the Holy See “Gay, Catholic, and American is a moving story about profound life, deep love, and authentic faith. Greg Bourke models for readers what it means to recognize God’s call for justice and respond with a commitment to divine love that refuses to be co-opted by others who seek to dismiss or demean difference. Through the compelling personal journey of one man, this book helps bring needed attention to the millions of other LGBTQ+ Catholics who faithfully practice their faith and love their families as much as their straight neighbors and deserve inclusion.” —Daniel P. Horan, OFM, author of A White Catholic’s Guide to Racism and Privilege"Gay, Catholic, and American is a richly detailed memoir of Gregory Bourke’s life. Throughout, the reader is struck by Bourke’s conciliatory attitude toward his opponents, his unassuming tone, and his humility—despite an impressive list of accomplishments and accolades." —Joseph Mello, author of The Courts, the Ballot Box, and Gay Rights"Greg Bourke’s memoir combines his and his family’s journey with the paths taken by the federal judiciary toward marriage equality, his local Catholic Church toward a warm embrace of gay and lesbian couples, and the Boy Scouts toward acceptance of openly gay scoutmasters. All heartwarming stories told with charity toward all, malice toward none." —William N. Eskridge, Jr., author of Equality Practice"The events described in this book could be seen as ordinary and unremarkable: a man finds a partner, forms a family, gets married, forges a career, and becomes a leader in his community, all while devotedly practicing his religious faith. But it becomes an extraordinary and exceptional story when you read what it took to pursue happiness, acceptance, and equality in all those arenas of his life while still remaining steadfast in that faith. In this way, Greg Bourke’s Gay, Catholic, and American is also both universal and personal, providing a compelling read for any audience." —Christine Becker, author of It’s the Pictures That Got Small"Greg Bourke’s remarkable memoir Gay, Catholic, and American is about how he and his husband became plaintiffs in one of the most pivotal Supreme Court cases in LGBTQ+ history. . . . Bourke’s story is directed by perseverance, grit, and faith. Throughout, he refuses to accept that his sexual orientation and his religion cannot coexist. His text is inspirational, humble, and engaging." —Foreword Reviews"In the Beatitudes, Jesus says that those who hunger and thirst for justice will be satisfied. Gay, Catholic and American is the story of one family’s journey in that quest. Greg Bourke weaves in the struggle, fear and hope of the journey to be recognized as a family and a full participant in our society. He engagingly recounts the struggles, fears and hopes of that journey that results in a compassion we can all learn from." —Simone Campbell, SSS, author of Hunger for Hope“Bourke, one of the plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage, shares his story of activism and devout Catholicism in this detailed . . . debut. . . . . [His] smooth, tidy narrative of activism pulls back the curtain on one of the most influential Supreme Court cases of modern American history.” —Publishers Weekly"Living as an out gay man in the 1980s and ’90s, Bourke struggled to find acceptance, but he did not become an activist until his ouster as a Boy Scout troop leader in 2012. His memoir chronicles a personal journey that became public with Bourke at the forefront of the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court case, Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide." —Notre Dame Magazine"Gay, Catholic and American is a book about both past and ongoing struggles for LGBTQ+ equality, and reminds readers that these battles are important, even, and perhaps especially, when they are being waged at the most local level." —New York Journal of Books“I want to get to LGBTQ Catholics, those who have been hurt, who feel like they’ve been marginalized, who have given up, and I want to encourage them not to do that,” Bourke says. “I want to give hope to people, that they don’t have to choose between their identity as a queer person and their identity as a Catholic—they don’t have to be mutually exclusive. I hope I presented an example of what it might look like to be able to have both.” —Greg Bourke, We Are ND"Readers curious about how one devout Catholic lives with the tension among official church teaching, his personal spiritual experience and his sexual orientation will find Bourke’s detailed account thought-provoking. Zondervan Confronting Injustice Without Compromising Truth
Book SynopsisConfronting Injustice without Compromising Truth looks beyond the divides of the left and right to discover how a Christian worldview speaks truth, hope, and unity into the most polarizing social justice controversies of our day. It presents a compelling vision of justice that offers hopeful answers to life’s biggest questions.Trade Review''Social Justice'--the very term too often quickly divides the room, resulting in rancor, uncivility, and broken relationships. This work will change that. Williams's bold contribution displays devotion to loving both God and neighbor with fidelity. Traveling beyond bogus binaries, pietistic proof-texting, and poisonous partisanship, Williams instead probes today's complex issues with riveting penetration, yet gracious patience so this crucial conversation can be continued, not censored.' * JEFFERY J. VENTRELLA, senior counsel, senior vice president of academic affairs and training, Alliance Defending Freedom *'Are you concerned about social justice and the church? If so, Thaddeus Williams's contribution to the discussion is a must-read. As an academic committed to justice concerns, I'm thankful for Williams's approach. He's unequivocal yet charitable and proves to be percipient and discerning as he unpacks his subject with care achieving the often elusive combination of necessary depth and broad accessibility. Join him and his cadre of diverse contributors as they address arguably the most significant issue facing today's church.' * PAT SAWYER, professor of education and cultural studies, University of North Carolina at Greensboro *'As a parent, teacher, and Christ-follower, my heart has been so troubled by the way many Christians have been drawn into false notions of social justice. Williams's book provides the kind of courageous, clear, truth-telling that can help bring sanity and unifying, gospel-centered love and justice to hurting people, fragmented churches, and a hostile world. This book provides direction for those who would seek to do justice in a way that honors God and truly loves others without resorting to us-versus-them dichotomies that tear people apart.' * LAURA ROSENKRANZ, mother, teacher *'As an African American pastor of a predominately African American church, I'm often asked what book I would recommend on the controversial topic of social justice. Thaddeus Williams has written my top recommendation. Thoroughly biblical, well- reasoned, and deeply charitable, this balanced book is a beacon of gospel light to every believer desiring to confront injustice armed with the truth of the Word. There are few issues of our day more important for Christians to get right than this one, and we owe Dr. Williams a debt of gratitude for his courage and skill applied to the production of this excellent work.' * ANTHONY D. KIDD, pastor of preaching, Community of Faith Bible Church, South Gate, California *'Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth is the book I've been waiting for! This is the book that explains and analyzes the social justice movement--that treats it fairly and evaluates it critically. This is the book that prioritizes the gospel as the foundation for any true justice. This is the book that helps Christians understand why they must emphasize social justice, but why they must emphasize the right kind of social justice. This is the book I highly recommend.' * TIM CHALLIES, blogger at www.challies.com, author of Do More Better *'If you are a Christian concerned about oppression, injustice, racism, and other moral ills that plague our culture, there may not be a more important book you read this year. Secular ideologies offer solutions to age-old problems that may act like temporary fixes, but only the Christian worldview can provide a robust and deeply satisfying action plan. Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth is the definitive guide to help Christians 'do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God . . .' as Micah 6:8 puts it, while not sacrificing one iota of biblical truth.' * ALISA CHILDERS, blogger and podcast host at www.alisachilders.com, author of Another Gospel? *'In our tribalized social-media age, the loudest voices are the ones that tend to get a hearing. But I'm thankful for the thoughtful voices that speak with wisdom to some of the most contentious issues we face today. Thaddeus Williams tackles them all--racism, sexuality, socialism, abortion, critical theory, identity politics--and argues that social justice, while not the gospel, isn't optional for Christians. Justified people seek to be a just people. But Williams also reminds us that not everything branded 'social justice'--the increasingly superficial, knee-jerk activism of our day is truly biblical. Whatever your starting point in this conversation, here's a book that will help inform, equip, and serve the church.' * IVAN MESA, editor, the Gospel Coalition *'In the task of fulfilling a biblical vision for humanity, we must heed the cry of our generation. This book calls us to conform our minds to the truth that informs justice. With its source in God, justice must flow through the human heart in order for it to be actualized in our world. Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth attempts to clear the way to let justice roll down as waters.' * JACOB DANIEL, founder, The Heritage Counsel *'Simply outstanding. Williams is fair-minded to Christians on both sides of the political spectrum while not shying away from what needs to be said. This urgently needed guide brings clarity to one of the greatest confusions Christians have in today's culture: discerning the difference between notions of justice rooted in a Christian worldview and those rooted in a godless secularism. Make no mistake--there's a critical difference, and it's one that's dangerously deceiving a great number in the church.' * NATASHA CRAIN, blogger at www.christianmomthoughts.com; author of Talking with Your Kids about Jesus *'Thaddeus Williams raises a number of good questions about justice--how the Bible defines it, what actions promote it, and what philosophies and ideologies might under-mine it. There's plenty here to challenge your presuppositions and assumptions--all with the goal of being more faithful to Scripture and clear-eyed regarding today's possibilities and pitfalls for doing justice in society.' * TREVIN WAX, senior vice president for theology and communications, LifeWay Christian Resources; author of Rethink Your Self *'Thaddeus Williams tackles the emotional topic of social justice in a way that is simultaneously personable, compassionate, and biblically faithful. Thaddeus doesn't try to 'Christianize' secular social justice ideology with a few Bible verses taken out of context. Rather, he works toward a faithful presentation of the biblical data. As a theologian working on justice questions, I am grateful for this contribution to this field.' * KRISTA BONTRAGER, theologian at Theology Mom, cohost of All the Things podcast *'Thaddeus, without a doubt, distributed some much-needed truth to the issue of how the social justice argument is contrary to gospel truth. His section on 'Sinners or Systems' was a breath of fresh air to a critical thinker like myself. I recommend this work to anyone who desires to stand on the side of the truth rather than speculations when it pertains to how we apply the Word of God in today's cultural climate.' * JAMAL BANDY, host, the Prescribed Truth podcast *'The 12 questions Thaddeus raises are the right questions we should all be asking in today's troubled world. Read with an open mind. Risk a change of heart. Don't get swept along into false answers that lead to only more injustice.' * JOHN M. PERKINS, president, The John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation; author of One Blood *'This is the most important book I have recommended in over twenty years. I have known Professor Williams for many years as a graduate student, friend, and faculty colleague. He is recognized as a person who walks what he talks. Thus, he brings biblical rigor, fidelity, cultural sensitivity, and concern to the topics in this book. It is now the go-to resource for clear, biblical thinking about social justice. I know of no other evangelical book with such rigor, insight, biblical fidelity, ethical maturity, and breadth of coverage as this one. This is the book for you!' * J. P. MORELAND, distinguished professor of philosophy, Talbot School of Theology; author of Finding Quiet *'Wherever one finds oneself in the debate related to Christians and social justice, this important work by Thaddeus Williams and friends will offer wise guidance to these challenging issues. Williams is to be commended for his courage in offering this road map for his readers. Anyone who wishes to engage in the debate regarding social justice in the days ahead will find Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth an essential prerequisite to that discussion.' * DAVID S. DOCKERY, president, International Alliance for Christian Education; theologian-in-residence, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary *'Williams offers a needed correction to some of the excesses in today's modern social justice movement. He does so without denying the existence of many of the problems such movements hope to address. The addition of Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth to our personal libraries will help us to move closer to a holistic approach to issues tied to social justice.' * GEORGE YANCEY, professor of sociology, Baylor University; author of Beyond Racial Gridlock *'Williams shows us how to think from the Christian faith, rather than allowing the categories and concerns of the day to rule the way Christians talk about race, politics, and inequality. This well-written, highly engaging book deserves careful consideration by every thoughtful Christian concerned about the issues of our time--not least because it allows Scripture to question some of our key assumptions about these issues, while also providing alternative ways to think about and engage them as kingdom citizens.' * UCHE ANIZOR, associate professor of theology, Biola University; author of How to Read Theology *

Zondervan Every Bodys Story
Book SynopsisIn Every Body's Story, Branson Parler examines six myths surrounding sexuality--three from culture and three out of the church--and calls us to be biblically rooted and culturally self-aware so that the stories of our (sex) lives faithfully embody the gospel.Trade Review'Every Body's Story is a readable, scholarly engagement of sexual discipleship for our times. Brilliantly deconstructing the sexual mythologies that control our lives, Branson Parler opens the door to the new worlds of covenantal faithfulness with God and his long story of saving the world. It's been a long time since I've been this encouraged after reading a book about sex!' * DAVID FITCH, Lindner Chair of Evangelical Theology, Northern Seminary, Chicago *'In a world that promises false liberty and incites inappropriate anger regarding sexuality and gender, Branson Parler is a winsome, loving voice of truth. With the wisdom of a theologian and the heart of a pastor, father, and friend, Parler expertly guides his readers through sex and gender myths toward a flourishing, embodied life.' * LAURIE KRIEG, author of An Impossible Marriage, host of the Hole in My Heart Podcast *'In this accessible book, Branson Parler shows that is not enough to object to secular stories about sex; we must inhabit and commend a more capacious one. These are complicated issues, and readers may not agree with all his conclusions. But the underlying vision is both countercultural and compelling, inviting readers to ask: What stories have we unwittingly imbibed? What stories are we embodying? And what could it look like for us to tell the story of God's suffering, faithful love in a ruptured world?' * JUSTIN ARIEL BAILEY, associate professor of theology at Dordt University, author of Interpreting Your World *'It is hard to imagine a more timely and articulate theology of bodies, sex, and marriage. Branson Parler has masterfully diagnosed what ails both our culture and our churches' sexual thinking and practice. Every Body's Story is biblically adept, historically aware, culturally astute, and philosophically sophisticated. At the same time, it is imminently practical and hauntingly convicting. I truly wish someone would have given me this book decades ago!' * JOHN NUGENT, professor of Bible and theology, Great Lakes Christian College *'Parler is such a careful thinker and has such deep biblical knowledge that even when the reader feels challenged, they will come away from this book with fresh insight; they will think more carefully and, indeed, more broadly on these issues. They will, in fact, find themselves wrestling with new questions, and this might be a significant part of what the church needs to reframe its conversation about human sexuality.' * ANDREW ZWART, director of interdisciplinary studies, Kuyper College *'The church needs the fresh hope Branson is offering in Every Body's Story. It's biblical, relevant, mind-stretching, Christ-centered. A must-read for our times.' * BOB BOUWER, senior pastor of Faith Church, author, and church coach *'This book is not a shot fired in a culture war, and it's not a set of simplistic rules. Rather, it is a call to faithfully enact a beautiful story with our bodies. As Branson Parler demonstrates, Christians have failed as often as anybody to practice and perform love in the daily work of our lives. But Parler turns to the gospel to find the redemptive script our bodies have been given to follow. In clear and delightful prose, this book offers the good news that our confused culture desperately needs.' * JEFFREY BILBRO, associate professor of English at Grove City College, editor in chief at Front Porch Republic *'With in-depth theological and cultural analysis and pastoral sensitivity, Every Body's Story enters the all too often polarized discourse on sexuality, bodies, marriage, and singleness. In it, Parler offers a rousing, timely critique of pervasive stories about our bodies, countering them with a compelling, beautiful corrective. By asking, 'What are our bodies for?' Parler uncovers the way that Christians in the West have, intentionally or unintentionally, twisted the biblical story of bodies, marriage, sex, and singleness. With a keen eye toward not only the problems 'out there' but the unhelpful and harmful teachings within the church, he contrasts the biblical story with both the story of the secular age and the distorted stories Christians have told about sex and bodies. We have failed, and we must do better. Parler offers us a gospel-centered way, inviting us to explore and embody not only God's 'no' to sin but also the wide and beautiful 'yes' to God's good gifts that we find in the story of Jesus. This is a needed book for our day.' * JESSICA JOUSTRA, assistant professor of religion and theology, director of Albert M. Wolters Centre for Christian Scholarship, Redeemer University *

Zondervan Ecosystems of Jubilee
Book SynopsisA beautiful reflection on the rhythm of God''s justice and a call to engage with that rhythm in a way that takes us back toward healing, wholeness, and restoration.God gave Israel the Year of Jubilee as a social reset. Taken together with Sabbath laws and gleaning laws (laws dealt with the harvest season), it was a way to celebrate God''s gifts and put the pieces of a broken society back together again. These Old Testament economic ethics were highly practical laws with a theological vision that, if enacted, would set Israel apart as a just society in the midst of a cruel, greedy, and unjust world—not unlike our present day.In Ecosystems of Jubilee, José Humphreys and Adam Gustine take a close look at the economic ethics and practices of the Old Testament, their fulfillment in Jesus, and their application for justice and ethics today. This book will not only motivate you to embrace a serious commitment to economic dTrade Review'Gustine and Humphreys are serious about helping us all to understand what I call the Shalom-Sabbath-Jubilee Construct and so was Jesus. If you don't understand Jesus' relationship to Jubilee, you have misunderstood him and his mission. Ecosystems of Jubilee faithfully leads us into a fuller understanding of this urgent topic and reveals how Jubilee can be implemented at various levels in our culture. Don't miss reading this book!' * Randy Woodley, PhD and author of Shalom and the Community of Creation: An Indigenous Vision *'If we want to see movements of restorative justice and joyful abundance in our lives and neighborhoods, we need a fresh imagination of economics rooted in the ancient story of God. Rev. Humphreys and Dr. Gustine have given us the theological and practical guide we need for this necessary journey. A book that is both timeless and timely. Highly recommended.' * Tim Soerens, co-founder of the Parish Collective, author of Everywhere You Look *'Jose and Adam remind us that there has been an economic system in place that we have slipped away from and inspires each of us to live out this just economy. Ecosystems of Jubilee is a must read for anyone aspiring towards justice.' * Rev. Dr. Leroy Barber, executive director of Neighborhood Economics, co-founder of the Voices Project *'Jubilee, Sabbath, Sabbatical Year and the Old Testament gleaning laws are four pillars of God's governance--the kind that cultivates shalom. Shalom is the overwhelming goodness of all relationships in creation. Shalom is ethical and it is necessarily economic. Shalom is about the ties that bind us together--the policies, the laws and the structures that order the way we live together in the world. As we sit in the shadow of a global pandemic that clarified the expendable-ness of 'essential' workers and the protected-ness of our ruling class, followers of Jesus are rightfully critiquing and interrogating traditional western economic practices and values. In this context, Adam Gustine and Jose Humphreys offer Ecosystems of Jubilee, a profound and meticulous biblical framework for the divine economics of Jubilee. This book is a must read. Then it is a must do.' * Lisa Sharon Harper, president and founder of Freedom Road, author of The Very Good Gospel and Fortune *'Most of us don't fully understand just how deep the mentality of scarcity is within us. Gratefully, there are shepherds like Adam and Jose whose words and lived experiences guide us toward gospel-informed neighborliness that can usher God's justice. In Ecosystems of Jubilee, we see how our spiritual practices are not separate from our financial decisions--and how, with intentionality, we can contribute to the liberation of others and ourselves through contemporary practices of gleaning, Sabbath, and Jubilee. The God of abundance draws closer through their words. Will we choose to listen and act?' * Gena Ruocco Thomas, author of Separated by the Border and A Smoldering Wick *'Our society's status quo bends toward scarcity, as Jose and Adam show so precisely in these pages. But their real contribution, the practical hope they offer to anyone ready to usher shalom into their neighborhoods, lies in the beautiful vision for liberating abundance they find in Scripture. You'll find no spiritual platitudes or justice cliches here; the authors' wisdom has been gained over years of practical ministry in relationship with diverse communities. What you will find is a paradigm for local ecosystems in which everyone and everything can thrive. Read carefully, imagine creatively, implement collaboratively, and then keep your eyes open for the lasting fruits of righteousness and justice.' * David Swanson, pastor of New Community Covenant Church and CEO of New Community Outreach *'This is the 'better way' guide for community ethics we've been waiting for. Gustine and Humphreys take us out into the streets, where the abundant, generous, generative heart of God is vibrantly at work. Pastors and non-profit leaders are sure to find this a fresh, imperative text. Even more, this blessedly practical book is for ordinary people who understand 'neighbor' is part of our spiritual DNA and simply need a nudge in the right direction. Ecosystems of Jubilee is a true place-changer. I cannot recommend it highly enough.' * Shannan Martin, author of Start with Hello and The Ministry of Ordinary Place *

Zondervan Agents of Grace
Book SynopsisPolitical division. Racial tension. Vaccine wars. In Agents of Grace, award-winning writer, journalist, and podcast host Daniel Darling equips us to discern what''s worth fighting for, how to move beyond our profound disagreements, and how to live as agents of Jesus''s love. When Daniel Darling was fired as spokesperson for the National Religious Broadcasters Association, it wasn''t his exit that made national news--it was the way he handled it. Daniel''s charitable response to those he had worked with was so radical that it made headlines. But why has kindness among Christians become so startling? In Agents of Grace, Daniel explores practical ways we can follow the Bible''s command to strive actively for peace even in a painfully divided church, country, and world. On a very personal level, he helps us climb out of cynicism about how the people of God treat each other, especially when we are trying to heal from such pain in our own livTrade ReviewAgents of Grace is a stirring call for Christians to manifest God's redemptive grace in the church and in society. Recognizing that genuine Christian unity must be coupled with doctrinal integrity, Daniel Darling offers thoughtful guidance for choosing the right theological fights and the manner in which to address the cultural issues of our day. Moreover, he appeals to followers of Christ to prioritize the virtues of love, peace, and forgiveness, together with lament, humility, and hope. Let us pray that readers will hear afresh and put into practice the Pauline exhortation 'to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.' David S. Dockery, president, International Alliance for Christian Education; Distinguished Professor of Theology, Southwestern Baptist Theological SeminaryBuy this book for the chapter on joy. It alone is worth the price of the book. Keep it for how it inspires you to work toward the beautiful vision of unity that Jesus desires for his messy but glorious bride. Bethany Jenkins, vice president of media, Veritas ForumDan Darling writes with authenticity and about how we, as Christians with many differences and life experiences, can stay unified in Christ. At a time when politics and ideology often divide friends and families, Dan demonstrates Christians can hold strong to the words and life of Jesus as we navigate this modern culture. Agents of Grace will help you think critically, biblically, and gracefully at the same time, offering a renewed perspective of each and every image bearer we come into contact with each day. Ericka Andersen, author, Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs WomenI deeply appreciate Dan Darling and wholeheartedly concur with his call for greater love and grace among Bible-believing Christians. Like many, I watched Dan go through his public ordeal that in my opinion never should have happened in a Christian ministry. Dan's experience brought back memories of the criticism I received from many believers when thirty years ago I did what I believed to be right in God's sight, through intervention to save the lives of the unborn. 'Friendly fire' doesn't seem very friendly when it leaves casualties in its wake. This book is about our need to love God and in the process learn to love our fellow believers, including those we disagree with in secondary areas. I highly recommend Agents of Grace as a tool for fostering a more conciliatory spirit. Randy Alcorn, author of Heaven, Happiness, If God Is Good, and DeceptionI heard someone say a lot of people are willing to kill for Christ but very few are willing to die for Christ. So many of us perform on social media now, and there is an incentive for bravado and boorish behavior, getting attention for ourselves, not really for Christ and his church. Like the early Christians in their pagan world, we could shine a light in our pagan world and stand out by showing more grace. Grace seems to be a forgotten concept for a lot of Christians, and Dan Darling does an excellent job reminding us of its necessity and what it actually is. Erick Erickson, host, The Erick Erickson ShowIn a time when tribalism, hyperpartisanism, and us-against-them posturing are at a fever pitch, God's people need renewed vision for Christ- and beatitude-worthy engagement. In times like today, when gospel virtues like love, peace, forgiveness, joy, and humility are scarce, leaning into those same virtues by the power of Christ might be our best opportunity for faithful, fruitful witness. And? We will be happier for it! As usual, Daniel has provided an excellent resource for God's people for such a time as this. Scott Sauls, senior pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church; author, Jesus Outside the Lines and Beautiful People Don't Just HappenIn such a contentious and divisive climate, it's refreshing to hear voices like Dan's calling the body of Christ to unity. Agents of Grace is a contemporary letter to the church, and it reminds us through Jesus that there is far more that unites us than divides us. Here, we're reminded how even when we disagree, Christ's love beckons his bride to biblical unity, virtues, and holiness as modeled in Scripture. Dan's book affirms that the spiritual battle is real, but our fight is not with each other; united in Christ, we stand against an enemy who seeks to divide us. Agents of Grace offers the church common ground, through common grace, to engage the common good for God's glory. Christina Crenshaw, PhD, cultural engagement and leadership associate, Dallas Theological Seminary's Hendricks CenterThe season we find ourselves in demands agents of grace and ambassadors of peace if we are going to bridge the divides we face today. This isn't foreign to our faith but core to it. Peacemaking and bridge building are signs the kingdom has come. Why are they so foreign to us as everyday followers of Jesus? Dan gives us great hope and help doing these very things. Read it and, more important, practice it. Bob Roberts, global senior pastor, Northwood Church; founder, Glocalnet/Multifaith Neighbors NetworkWhy would someone who has been wounded by Christians seek to serve and unite our churches? The answer is the grace of God. Dan Darling has written a helpful work calling us, from Scripture, to see unity as a must-have, not a nice-to-have. He's called us to love not just Christians but those Christians. You know the ones. The ones who look different than you. The ones who think differently than you. The ones who care about different issues than you. I remember once thinking about writing a book called Agents of Unity. I'm delighted Dan has written it for me, and he was right to champion God's grace as the banner. May we all be agents of that grace so the world will know we follow Jesus (John 13:35). Zondervan Systematic Theology Second Edition
Book SynopsisThe most widely-used text of the last 25 years in its discipline, Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem has been thoroughly revised and expanded for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine’s scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life.Trade Review'After a quarter century of remarkable usefulness globally, Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology, in its second edition, remains remarkable for its extraordinary juxtapositions. It is penetrating but not confusing; forthright and unequivocal but not reckless or overstated; readable and clear but not superficial; biblically grounded, even biblically saturated, but not textually careless or glib; devout and reverent but not uncritical or naive; practical but not trendy or sentimental; comprehensive but not majoring on minors; a book for the church but not parochial or sectarian. I thank God for this precious gift to Christ's people worldwide.' * John Piper, founder and teacher, Desiring God, chancellor, Bethlehem College and Seminary *'As a theology professor at Biola University, where I have taught for over twenty years, I feel like I coteach all my classes with Wayne Grudem. Our students are taught the basic doctrine of the Christian faith in three semesters of required courses. Grudem's Systematic Theology provides the core content for my classes and many of the other undergraduate theology courses at the university. Grudem wrote this book to strengthen the church, and it excels in its clarity, readability, and biblically based approach that seeks to get theology into real life. Systematic Theology consistently accomplishes Grudem's goal--to lead the reader to greater knowledge and worship of the God of the Bible.' * Erik Thoennes, PhD, professor of and chair of theology, Talbot School of Theology and Biola University, pastor, Grace Evangelical Free Church of La Mirada *'Grudem's Systematic Theology is well organized, easy to understand, usually persuasive, and devotional. Grudem does not merely inform you; he stirs your affections to love and worship the triune God. Grudem is not attempting to write a cutting-edge contemporary theology that plays theological ping-pong with trendy nonevangelical theologians. Nor is he attempting to write a historical theology that exhaustively explains what significant Bible interpreters and theologians have believed. Rather, he is serving the church by helping Christians who are not experts in theology better understand what the whole Bible says about God, God's Word, man, Christ, the Holy Spirit, angels and demons, salvation, the church, and the end times.' * Andy Naselli, associate professor of systematic theology and New Testament, Bethlehem College and Seminary, Minneapolis, pastor, Bethlehem Baptist Church *'How does one improve on a classic? You can't, say some. But I beg to differ. In this second and expanded edition of Systematic Theology, Wayne Grudem has made his classic work even better, more insightful, significantly more detailed, and an even greater resource for the Christian and the local church. When I'm asked to recommend a good and comprehensive volume on Christian doctrine and practice, I never hesitate. My encouragement is precise and to the point: 'Get Grudem!'' * Sam Storms, PhD, lead pastor for preaching and vision, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City *'I can neither quantify nor qualify all the ways in which Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology has assisted me over the past twenty-five years. I've turned to it innumerable times and for innumerable reasons, and it has invariably proven a trusted and steady guide. It was there when I was first exploring Christian doctrine and there when I was ready to dive deeper. I can say truly that few books have been more meaningful or had more influence. With the arrival of this long-awaited second edition, it is fitting that the book that has so guided me and my generation can be refreshed in such a way that it can equally impact my children and theirs. I have every confidence that it will.' * Tim Challies, author of Epic: An Around-the-World Journey through Christian History *'I used to tell people that Grudem's Systematic Theology was the best single volume theology available. After using it for a quarter of a century, I now believe it is the best of all the systematic theologies in print, single or multivolume. It is one of those rare works that can challenge the scholar and instruct the beginner. This new edition addresses the most important changes in the theological landscape since 1994, and it has completely updated bibliographies. It is simply indispensable.' * Dr. Jack Deere, author and Old Testament scholar *'I warmly welcome the second edition of Systematic Theology. There is nothing like it. Here is an introduction to biblical doctrine that every believer can read and understand. As we read we are not only informed but edified and led to worship. And when we disagree or simply want to dig deeper, we are pointed to other resources in the Christian tradition. Just as the first edition was widely used, so I trust this new edition will do much good.' * Bill James, principal, London Seminary, UK *'It is impossible to estimate the benefit that Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology has had for countless individuals, churches, Bible colleges, and seminaries over the past twenty-five-plus years. I've gladly used it as my main text in teaching theology to thousands of students whom I've had the privilege to teach at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and Southern Seminary. And oh how my students have loved the clarity, comprehensiveness, worshipfulness, and biblical fidelity of this textbook. But now we have, due to Dr. Grudem's painstaking work, an even better, more complete, updated version of this excellent theology book. Praise be to God, and deep thanks to Wayne Grudem, for extending the life of this work and making it even better for another generation of theological students of God's Word.' * Bruce A. Ware, T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky *'Our current generation is seeing a resurgence in Reformed theology and practice, fueled by the likes of John Piper, R. C. Sproul, John MacArthur, the Gospel Coalition, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. At the heart of this renaissance is a textbook read by over 750,000 students, pastors, Christian leaders, and lay people in churches. Defining and explaining scores of doctrines, connecting them to the Bible, providing interpretations of key supporting passages, defending a Reformed theological understanding of the doctrines, and offering concrete applications of them, Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine has provided an essential foundation for this Reformed resurgence. This second edition, updated and expanded, will undoubtedly continue to energize this reawakening!' * Gregg R. Allison, professor of Christian theology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, author, Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine *'Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem stands squarely in the stream of broadly Reformed tradition on the main issues of theology, including the doctrine of Scripture, the doctrine of God, and the doctrine of salvation. Perhaps the strongest feature of the book is its accessibility. Grudem does not water down the meat of theology. But by minimizing technical terminology and by including hymns, questions, and indications of application, he makes systematic theology much more accessible and life-invigorating for a large range of Christian readers. In this second edition he has made further improvements by including new material and by modifying his views on a few difficult issues.' * Vern Poythress, distinguished professor of New Testament, biblical interpretation, and systematic theology, Westminster Theological Seminary *'The whole church is indebted to Wayne Grudem for a fresh presentation of evangelical Christianity. . . . Even those who do not share his . . . positions on certain issues will be enriched by Grudem's clear statement of basic evangelical theology and his helpful cross-references to other major theological positions. Of particular value is his constant eye to the application of doctrine to personal life, ministry, and the church. For Grudem, intellectual understanding cannot be separated from heart experience.' * Allan Coppedge, former Beeson Professor of Christian Theology, Asbury Theological Seminary *'Wayne Grudem studied with me in the early 1970s, and both of us have endorsed one another's systematic theologies. That is perhaps unusual. Our two books look at theology from somewhat different 'perspectives,' as I like to say, and so they appeal to somewhat different readers. But Grudem's book has sold a lot more copies, and deservedly so. I couldn't be happier. I wish that all Christian writers could be as thankful for God's ministry through friendly 'rivals,' authors who bless the church through biblical, clear, and winsome teaching. Scripture is so rich that we need to look at it from many angles. We need more systematic theologies, not fewer. But for now, Wayne's work is the best.' * John Frame, professor of systematic theology and philosophy emeritus, Reformed Theological Seminary *'Wayne Grudem's second edition of Systematic Theology displays all the virtues of the first. He shows and explains how the doctrines discussed stem from the biblical text. Even if readers disagree here or there, they understand why Grudem argues as he does since he makes his case from the Scriptures. The book stands out for its clarity and accessibility. Academics, immersed in technical study for years, are prone to forget that most people have never read a systematic theology before. The lucidity and simplicity of Grudem makes his work an ideal textbook. This is not to say that scholars cannot profit from his work as well since he lays out arguments cogently. The pastoral tone of the work shines through as well. The hymns and songs concluding the chapters remind us that theology isn't a matter of abstract teaching but should lead us to praise and worship of the Lord.' * Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor Of Biblical Theology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary *

MultiChurch provides an excellent framework for continued discussion around the multisite church model, while maintaining a consistent doctrinal grounding in the discipline of ecclesiology. I am convinced any leader in a multisite church will benefit from this book! * DR. TODD ENGSTROM, executive pastor of ministry strategies, The Austin Stone Community Church *Frankly, I’ve been chilling on multi-site models. But Allison and House have reignited the topic in ways that are prescient and defrosting to one’s iced-over imagination. MultiChurch bears weight too, knowing that the audience must find simplicity in the theological and ecclesiological complexities. Yet, Allison and House are at their best navigating between ambiguity and clarity, polity and missiology; and then gently escorting us to a perch from which we can glimpse “multichurch.” If you are struggling with multisite models, polity perplexities, or how to take practical steps forward, get this book! * DAVE HARVEY, executive director of Sojourn Network, teaching pastor at Summit Church in Naples, founder AmICalled.com, and author of When Sinners Say I Do; & Letting Go: Rugged Love for Wayward Souls (@RevDaveHarvey) *Gregg Allison and Brad House add valuable data and insight to the nascent research and critique of item multisite movement. It's an increasingly significant part of the local church landscape, and it's not going away anytime soon. As a pastor of a multisite church that has transitioned into a family of churches, I can say that what they have written here will be extremely helpful for those interested in wrestling with the theological and practical considerations involved in leading multiple congregations toward church health. * HARVEY TURNER, founding pastor of Living Stones Churches, lead pastor of Living Stones Reno, Acts 29 US West Leadership Team *If you're doing multisite or plan to in the future---stop now and read MultiChurch! In the process, they give a remedy to the multisite movement's greatest need---a theologically grounded and implication-rich response to multisite's most challenging questions. If you want to move past adding sites and venues to multiplying disciples, leaders, and churches, read MultiChurch and apply. * BRIAN FRYE, national collegiate strategist, North American Mission Board *Now in its third decade, the multisite movement began as a radical idea to solve church facility restrictions and has now become a mainstream strategy for all kinds of churches. The authors of MultiChurch: Exploring the Future of Multisite have served this movement well by describing its evolution, naming its distinct expressions, addressing its criticisms, and charting a course forward for a movement that is not slowing down and is continually morphing. SCM Press Beyond Liberation Theology A Polemic Reclaiming Liberation Theology
Book SynopsisPresents the global socio-economic context within which liberation theologians work. This book argues that at the heart of social abandonment is idolatry, and that we do not live in a secular world anymore but an idolatrous one. It believes that poor blacks suffer more than middle class blacks, that poor women suffer more than middle class women.Trade ReviewControversial and brilliant. Petrella is one of the leading voices in twenty-first century Latin American Liberation Theology.' Marcella Althaus-Reid, PhD Chair in Contextual Theology, School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh 'Ivan Petrella's brilliant and bold book raises several timely and important challenges for future work within & about liberation theologies. He has produced a seamless and compelling integration of theology, economics, and legal theory, both addressing and stimulating debate with the major liberation theologies of the Americas. His analysis will be key for years to come.' Otto Maduro, Professor of Latin American Christianity & World Christianity, Drew University Theological School 'In this timely and well-argued book Ivan Petrella's thought gets even more incisive and original. The current state of the world requires the challenge of liberation theology because the poor are dying everywhere, not only in the so-called Third World. Theology, economics and legal theory come together in this wonderful canvas of social reflexivity; this is a book that will remain seminal to all theologians in the 21st Century.' Mario I. SCM Press Beyond the Spirit of Empire
Book SynopsisHow does empire mould human subjectivity, for instance, and how does it affect the understanding of humans within the whole of creation? This title analyzes the global empire in its political and economic dimensions, in its symbolic constructions of power, and in its general assumptions often taken for granted.Trade Review'This rich and interdisciplinary book presents a powerful up-to-date critique of the spirit of Empire, using critical insights from post-Marxist, postmodern, and postcolonial theories. Written by authors who have engaged liberation Christianity from three different geographical locales, this text provides resources and visions for those who believe that annother world and an alternative spirit that resists Empire are possible. I highly recommend this creative theological reading of transcendence, subjectivity, and democracy in the political present.' Kwok Pui-lan, author of Postcolonial Imagination and Feminist Theology ‘This unusual and engaging book can be properly described as “the geography of religion and the constitution of Western empires.” A Methodist from Germany, a Catholic Korean in Brazil and a Methodist from Argentina and of Italo-Spanish descent allows for an intra-religious and inter-national disciplinary dialogue. The book will be of interest to all readers interested in religion, theologians or not, Christians or not, whether or not they are located within the realm of Western Empire or in its exteriority, that is, beyond Christian theology in all its diversity. The book makes a signal contribution to understanding the double role of theology and religion. On the one hand, Christian Theology was and continues to be part of Western imperialism and, on the other, from Christian Theology emerged variegated theologies of liberation, of which this book is an excellent example.' SCM Press Church for Every Context An introduction to Theology and Practice
Book SynopsisFresh Expressions of Church are one of the most important developments within the contemporary church. There has been and continues to be much learning about how to plant Fresh Expressions of church in contemporary culture and about theological resources to support this. Church for Every Context is the first textbook that reflects this learning.Church for Every Context addresses the theology and methodology of Fresh Expressions/church planting. Topics include ecclesiology, Fresh Expressions in the New Testament, social forces behind Fresh Expressions today, theologies to underpin fresh expressions, how fresh expressions develop, the missional dynamics involved, discipleship, worship and how Fresh Expressions can be sustained and supported.Trade Review‘This is a brilliant work, and as invaluable as it is brilliant. A logical and mature continuation of the seminal Mission-Shaped Church report of 2004, Church for Every Context is the most insightful, informing, and instructive study I have seen to date on emergence ecclesiology and contextual church. It is, in sum, absolutely exhilarating both in its balanced, analytical content and in its vision for the future of the Church.’ Phyllis Tickle, author, The Great EmergenceMichael Moynagh offers both an analysis and an apology for new forms of church that is well grounded in the cultural realities of the 21st century, arguing that these emerging ecclesial communities are not only faithful to scripture and tradition, but are also characterized by a theologically grounded cultural engagement. Supported by comprehensive references and suggestions for further reflection, this book will inspire and inform newcomers to the conversation as well as those who are already a part of it. -- John DraneMichael Moynagh has produced a remarkable book that looks set to become a standard text on the fresh expressions and emerging churches that are exploring new ways of engaging contextually with a changing culture. Comprehensive in its coverage, inter-disciplinary in its approach, painstakingly researched and clearly argued, practitioners and researchers alike will find this invaluable. -- Stuart Murray WilliamsChurch for Every Context is a big book in every sense: the fruit of mature reflection and wisdom on major new movements in Church and in God's mission. It has a global and a biblical perspective on these movements. The chapters are well rooted historically and full of stories and examples of good practice. I commend it very warmly indeed to beginners in this field and to those who are experts. -- Steven CroftMike Moynagh has rendered a service to us all. He covers so much that is at the heart of our debates about the Church, her nature, ministry and mission. We can all agree with the aims he sets out: discipleship, worship and community in sustainable churches. If the way to get there as the Church of England is disputed, then this book demonstrates that a theological discussion is well and truly under way. -- Andrew Davison“Michael Moynagh is an experienced watcher of both church and culture, and this well-read, learned and thoughtful book provides an invaluable and comprehensive guide to contemporary debates over new forms of church.” -- Graham TomlinThere is no such thing as theology, and that means that there is no such thing as ecclesiology. There is only contextual theology and contextual understandings and practices of church. This is the powerful insight behind what Michael Moynagh calls the "New Contextual Churches." A Church for All Contexts is a book that shows the significance of churches that seek to incarnate "fresh expressions" of Christian community as community in mission. Moynaugh and Harrold show clearly that these new ways of thinking about and doing church are not so much innovations but movements radically faithful to Christian Tradition, most especially because they are radically faithful to the present always-changing context of faithful discipleship of Jesus Christ. This is an exciting book. Its rootedness in Tradition make it revolutionary. If you want to be a member of the church today, this book should be required reading. -- Stephen BevansMichael Moynagh has provided an excellent understanding of the background of and rationale behind the Fresh Expressions movement, highlighting many of the issues the existing church is facing in relating to a rapidly changing culture. While highly prizing the value of the traditional forms of church, he wrestles with the extent of flexibility that out to be accorded new forms of the church, while not compromising the gospel. -- Al BarthMoynagh has written an indispensable book on contextual church planting and renewal. We have needed a book like this for some time now -- a historical, theological, and sociological guide to new expressions of faith within Western culture. This is not a 'how-to' book on church renewal and planting techniques -- anything but. Moynagh does so much more than play with church forms and encourage consumer analysis. Moynagh's approach to new expressions of church is theologically rich and missiologically astute, revealing a systematic way to think about church in a post-Christendom context. I plan to use this book as a core reference text in my seminary church planting course this Fall. Highly recommended. -- Dr. Ryan K. Bolger, PhD * Fuller Theological Seminary *The book is full of many concrete examples and is wonderfully comprehensive in scope. Each chapter contains multiple "For reflection" sections, which extend critical points into critical application. Also, each chapter ends with readings for further study and a set of discussion questions. This text will broaden every reader's comprehension of new contextual churches and will challenge all to think deeply about mission, context, and church. Without a doubt, this will become the standard text for study of new contextual ecclesiology. -- Christopher Flanders * Mission Studies 31 *

SCM Press God Me and Being Very Old Stories and Spirituality in Later Life
Book SynopsisThis book is not about old age, but about old people, known and loved or lost and bemused. The heart of the book is the hearing and re-telling of the faith stories of fifteen of the oldest old, all of whom are living in residential care settings. The stories outline the lives they have lived and the impact they have made on their listeners.Trade ReviewMost books focus on positive ageing, and prefer to ignore the challenges of the fourth age, the age of frailty. This book, which tells the stories of the oldest of people, in care homes, through the lenses of chaplains, will be of immense value to all who work with older people. It also challenges the mainline churches to accept the ageing of both society and churches, to address the special needs for spiritual growth and nurture as well as pastoral care of older people. -- Elizabeth MacKinlay"A beautiful and instructive book about the oldest old in Britain today that demonstrates the value of listening and attending to them with empathy. It has important messages not only for Christian churches but for all those interested in improving care standards for the ageing members of our society". -- Peter Coleman“This book will help us all learn how to age as well as we can with or without a faith to guide us. It provides authentic voices from older people, from narrators and interpreters the combination of which make it a rare and important read”. -- Harriet MowatThis is an important book from which we learn that the very old should be taken seriously, listening to their stories is not for them alone and the Church should review its mission strategy to older people. It is a book which makes a new contribution to the pastoral and spiritual care of the very old. Chaplains working with the very old should read it, but its value extends well beyond this to everyone engaged in pastoral ministry. -- Jocelyn Bryan

SCM Press Raging with Compassion
Trade Review"Thoughtful, heartfelt and deeply faithful..." -- Samuel Wells"It takes a particular gift, persuasiveness, and credibility to challenge a paradigm so ingrained and so evaded by a generation of textbooks. Long experience as both a mental health nurse and a theologian has given John Swinton that credibility. The community of Christians, gathered around a suffering Lord, has unique resilience to respond to evil creatively. This hopeful book recovers a theodicy of action and faithfulness. It has immense pastoral value." -- Ian TorranceThis is an important book which should be read by anyone in Christian ministry, dealing as it does with the timeless truths that underpin practical theology: listening in silence, lament, forgiveness, thoughtfulness and hospitality. The book is particularly strong in its treatment of lament and the use of the psalms. Although first published by Eerdmans in 2007, this book has not gone out of date, except in one respect. Where it might benefit from being updated is in its references to the issue of asylum seekers and our failure as a society to offer hospitality to those in need. Another strength of the book is the author’s insistence on the need for the church to avoid being tempted to try and explain suffering and evil rather than responding ‘to evil by faithfully engaging in the practices of love in the midst of evil’. Criticism notwithstanding, this book is thoroughly recommended. -- Marion Gray * The Reader, Winter edition *

SCM Press The Naked Preacher Action Research and a Practice of Preaching 4 SCM Research 4
Trade ReviewJason Boyd has engaged in a radical examination of his preaching practice, not as mere upskilling but as rigorous and reflective theological inquiry. In doing so he has explored and reframed what it is to do theology in the practice of his preaching and, thereby, contribute to the field of practical theology...What is innovative about this work is how he has brought theological inquiry and action research together, not in an isolated or theoretical way only but in conversation with members of his congregation in the reality of his Sunday preaching. His creation and realisation of the notion of the Word Café is an innovative contribution to both fields. -- David CoghlanJason Boyd offers a fresh and compelling model of preaching as democratic hermeneutics and everyday liberation. It encourages preaching as an event that is at once both orthodox and existential, and allows for the meaning making and wisdom to be shared horizontally, not vertically, as a means of equipping the body of Christ to attain a deeper relevance and desire for discipleship in today's complex world. -- Chris Baker
