Christian Focus Publications Ltd Mea Culpa: Learning from Mistakes in the Ministry
Book SynopsisFrom the Foreword by Brian Croft: Kyle McClellan has gone into a church "with guns blazing" and he was quickly fired. He has experienced the disappointment of unmet expectations and left because of this. He has pastored a destructive church that chewed him up and spat him out. He has felt the pull of the bigger and better church trying to woo him away. He has faced the burnout and fatigue that many pastors experience that causes them to bail. Read this book. Learn from him. Receive the essential lessons from a wise, broken man who has lived it, possesses the scars from it, owns the T-shirt and yet by the grace of God still stands.Trade ReviewThe greatest strength of this book is its honesty: McClellan's confession is no half-hearted exercise in false humility, no exercise in serving up facile platitudes. In a clear and everywhere colorful fashion, he blames no one but himself for his decade of sojourning in pastoral ministry. Presently McCellan serves as pastor of Grace Church (PCA), a church he founded in his hometown of Fremont, Nebraska. He is learning to apply seven valuable and hard-won lessons he learned during his first decade of ministry. These lessons make up the heart of the book and show he's indeed learned hard-to-come-by virtues of humility and wisdom-all while smoldering in the cauldron of ministerial affliction caused to a great degree, he says, by ministerial malpractice.Brutally honest and insightful. -- The Gospel CoalitionWith a humorous tone, a humble posture, and a pastor's heart, Kyle McClellan shares where he got punched in the mouth so we'd know when to duck. -- Gavin Johnson... short, easy to read, with seven lessons that Kyle McClellan learned from four pastorates that lasted a total of just ten years ... writes with the maturity of a godly pastor who recognises where he (and sometimes where the churches he served) went wrong. Worth a read. -- Pete Killingley - Evangelicals NowThe more I work with pastors all around the world, the more I am finding that those who have terrible experiences pastoring a church often leave the ministry altogether. The hurt and pain is just too much. Such is not the case for my dear friend, Kyle McClellan, who wrote this book. Kyle shares some of the lessons he learned in those painful years with a raw transparency that is refreshing and engaging to read. -- Brian CroftRead this book and be encouraged that God uses your mistakes while making you wiser in the process. -- Mark Green... You will wince at Kyle's mistakes, grow wiser through his insights, and find fresh hope that a pastor can be used by God despite all of his faults and foibles. -- Colin AdamsAn intriguing book. The story of a man who both burned and was burned by several churches in the early years of his ministry. The lessons he learned along the way will be a great help to seminarians and pastors alike. -- Mez McConnell... Young ministers ought to read the book as a warning and an opportunity. Older ministers need to read the book as a call to humble mentoring of the next generation. -- Paul R HouseLearn from Kyle's missteps, but even more, embrace the God of grace to whom he gives testimony. -- Sean Michael LucasMea Culpa delivers a raw view of truth and through that truth, a pathway to contentment, peace and forgiveness through the power of God. Read it and then live it. -- Ed Weaver

In this commentary on the three letters of John, Terry Johnson does just that. It is succinct, straightforward, relevant, encouraging and theological. -- Brian H. Edwards, Evangelicals NowTerry Johnson loves the Bible. He also loves speaking directly, fearlessly and with great clarity. Book SynopsisChrist and His People brings together eight convictions which shaped the ministry of Mark Ashton, a ministry rooted in faithful and humble leadership of Round Church, Cambridge. These eight convictions will encourage others to persevere in ordinary local church, trusting God to keep His Word.Trade ReviewMark Ashton was vicar of the Church of the Holy Sepulchure in Cambridge from 1987 until his death in 2010. He writes dearly, simply, but above all biblica1Jy, about the priorities for local church life. Don't be put off by the fact that his ministry was in a large student church. The principles he elaborates apply to any church in any context. This book deserves to be read, whether you are a minister or member of a congregation. You will not come away disappointed. -- Phil Lo Bao, Evangelicals NowMark Ashton minded the business God gave him, and I am thankful beyond words that his pastoral wisdom shines forth in the pages of this little book. He, being dead, yet speaks, and we do well to listen. -- D. A. Carson (Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois)Reading this wonderful book has reminded me how many of my priorities have been significantly shaped by his example, from sitting under his feet when he first arrived at the Round Church, and by his teaching. All who read it will be challenged, as I was, to sharpen their focus and raise their standards for the great benefit of the church and the glory of God. -- Vaughan Roberts (Rector of St Ebbe's, Oxford and Director of Proclamation Trust)

Messenger Publications Robots, Ethics and the Future of Jobs
Book Synopsis“I love my robot lawn mowers, my laptop, wifi, Google, Facetime, Whatsapp and the possibility of drone postal deliveries and more.. Yet worries nag about being overwhelmed by an artificial intelligence revolution whose ethical and moral parameters are less clear than its rampant profiteering from and monetising of your lives and mine. This hugely informative book shakes us out of our massage armchairs and demands that we engage immediately with these galloping advances so we can shape them to the benefit of the many and not leave them to the enrichment of the few at the awful cost of the impoverishment of swathes of humanity”. Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland. "Robots, Ethics and The Future of Jobs is a wakeup call for political, civic, media and church leaders, urging a response to the deepening and accelerating pace of technological change and its potential consequences. Artificial Intelligence, robotics, drones, the internet of things and 3D printing are the building blocks of the 4th industrial revolution. These technologies offer great potential but also carry real risks and are reaching into every corner of our lives, civilian and military. Who will win and who will lose? Who will set the rules and the ethical boundaries within which they should develop and operate? Will the displaced be included, if so, how; or ignored and, if so, with what political, social and economic consequences? That these questions cannot be avoided and should not be postponed - and that we do not need to wait for change to happen because it is already upon us - are central messages of this thought provoking text." Christian Focus Publications Ltd Word to the World
Book SynopsisThe modern church is suffering from crises in identity, belief and involvement with the State. As you read this collection of the works of William Barker you will find that they are all connected. The reason why the church has problems interacting with government is because it doesn’t understand its mission, history and authority. An internationally respected professor of Church history shows what the church should do and look for in creating proper relationships with governments, other faiths and society in general. He also shows how we should deal with divisions inside the church and what role the Bible should play in defining its faith. Sit back in a comfy chair and let Will Barker shed light on some of the knottiest problems in the church. Then go out and put it into practice.Trade Review"Dr. Barker is a first-rate church historian, and his considerable theological skills are on open display in this welcome collection of his writings. His generous spirit, powerful mind and pastoral heart are productive of theological discourse that is a model, in both tone and content, for reformed ministers and scholars as we engage with a hostile postmodern culture." -- J Ligon Duncan III PhD, Senior Minister of First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi (Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary)'The publication of Word to the World is a cause for rejoicing. The book is marked by both variety and constancy. Running through all this variety, though, are certain constants: good writing; a combination of forthrightness and fairness; prudence and much wise counsel; a reverent, even worshipful, tone; and above all, the fruitfulness of a mind and heart devoted to the Bible. Indeed, Will Barker's attitude toward and use of the Bible in this collection makes one think of the good old biblical name that we used to use for the Word of God-the Holy Scriptures (2 Tim 3:15).' -- Robert A. Peterson, Professor of Systematic Theology, Covenant Theological Seminary (Theologian, editor, and co–author, ‘Jesus In Prophecy: How Christ’s Life Fulfills Biblical Predictions’)

Sex has brought immense happiness to countless millions but it has also dealt sorrow and heartache to just as many. It need not, and it should not; hence this little book. In it the contributors present lucidly, and without need for apology, our Maker's instructions on how to handle one of the most wonderful gifts he has given to us—our human sexuality. Book Synopsis When you left seminary or took up your present pastorate you were going to set the church aflame with your sound Biblical exposition, your sweeping theological insights and your homiletical eloquence. To do so you have to preach like Paul - or Peter - or Stephen!Roger Wagner sets out to give you the insights you need to preach like those closest to Jesus. He first looks at the characteristics of New Testament preaching and then looks in more detail at 10 sermons preached in Acts by Peter (3), Paul (6) and Stephen. An appendix deals with how to preach to the modern, pluralist, materialist, pagan society we live in. Dissatisfied with your sermons? You too can preach like an Apostle! From the introduction by Roger Wagner:"As a Bible believing minister you are already accustomed to using the scriptures for the content of your messages. Now I am calling you to examine the way the sermons in Acts can also give you insights into how to shape the form of your messages, and let the apostolic preachers become your examples of how to deliver sermons that will be powerful and effective." Trade Review"Preachers dissatisfied with archaic, ingrown traditionalism on the one hand and with relativistic contextualization on the other will find in Tongues Aflame a biblical alternative that is faithful to Scripture, personally challenging, and stimulating in its passionate confidence that preaching as Peter, Stephen, and Paul did will advance Christ's reign of grace in the 21st century, as it did in the first." -- Dennis E. ATF Press Science and Religion and Culture in the Jesuit
Book SynopsisThis collection is set within the horizon of Jesuit mission in East Asia which is best examplified by the great Mateo Ricci whose work centuries ago anticipated in so many ways the dialogue between religion, science and culture today. This horizon, though implicit in the following essays, serves as the basic perspective of the authors many of whom are in some way connected to the Jesuit tradition either as members of the Society of Jesus or as graduates and lecturers of Jesuit educational institutions in East Asia. Despite the presence of of scientfic acivity in some academic or research institutions and the dominant influence of Christian religious practice, the science-and-religion problematic has been, for the most part, untreated in the Philippine contect. Book SynopsisIs fellowship still possible? In this volume Jochen Kaiser analyses how we experience music during church services. In his view singing and making music may best be seen as both the individual and collective expression of the faith of those assembled.Music during church services can be a convincing expression of the faith of the individual, both of heart and soul. All persons present become part of a temporary, spiritual collective. The resultant meaning of church music for the religious experience of the individual forms the empirical part of this work by Jochen Kaiser. He sent out an appeal to collect essays and musical examples taken from actual experiences, 64 of which he analysed using the so-called documentary method. The results show that singing and making music during church services can be interpreted as both an individual and collective expression of the faith of those present.

Peeters Publishers Catholic Social Thought: Twilight or Renaissance?
Book SynopsisThese essays are an attempt to recover something of the form, style and force of Catholic non-official social thinking in the face of contemporary social thought and contemporary injustice in advanced societies. After an opening essay by the doyen of Catholic writers in this field, Jean-Yves Calvez, SJ, the book is divided into three sections. The first and largest group of essays discuss patterns and predicaments of Catholic social thought in general terms and from different points of view. The context here is partly the debate on modernity, high-modernity and post-modernity, partly the issue of how far and in what ways Catholic Social Thought can claim to be distinctive, relative to contemporary secular thought. The second section of the book focusses on relationships between Catholic social thought and its restatement, and a number of contemporary debates on public issues. Particular attention is given, in successive essays, to issues of anti-poverty, human rights, economic theory and international finance. A third and shorter section describes a number of institutional projects which attempt to carry Catholic social values forward into concrete action, focussing on work in health and welfare, grass roots economic co-operation, anti-poverty and international peace and justice. Final contributions by the reputed international scholar in this field, John Coleman, SJ, and the book editors, respectively evaluate the collection as a whole and discuss further steps.

Peeters Publishers Challenges of Moral Leadership
Book SynopsisWhat is it about leadership that makes being a moral leader such a challenge? Why do leaders typically make the same mistakes over and over again, throughout history, across cultures and over time? How do expectations of heroic leadership impact a leader's moral integrity? How do followers contribute to (or undermine) a robust ethical stance of their leaders? This volume addresses these and other questions from a variety of interdisciplinary, practitioner and faith perspectives. It contains, for example, a historical account of leadership challenges, an engagement with the responsibility ethics of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and a contextual study of the specific challenges of ethical leadership in Russia. This second volume of the series Christian Perspectives on Leadership and Social Ethics, published by the Institute of Leadership and Ethics, of the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit in Leuven (Belgium), serves leaders to face an increasingly complex reality.

Peeters Publishers Sharing the Word of Hope with the World - Das
Book SynopsisThe 16th conference of the ESWTR, held in Crete, took place in the midst of the European financial and banking crisis in Greece and the beginning of the challenge of refugees. In this yearbook, female scholars reflect on the current political situation in Europe in the light of Hope. The fact that the conference took place in Greece gave a unique chance to women from Southern and Eastern countries in Europe to participate. The articles in this yearbook not only highlight the aspects of the hostile relations that human beings developed towards each other, they analyze very sharply the reactionary and misogynic politics in Europe nowadays. The role of women in the dissemination of the hopeful biblical message, their social involvement as well as their engagement in the transformation of this world, is a main focus in the relevant theological discussion.
