Book SynopsisSince the Taliban seized Kabul in 1996, the public has grappled with the relationship between Islamic education and radical Islam. This work examines the varieties of modern Muslim education and their implications for national and global politics. It describes that Islamic education is neither traditional nor medieval, but rather complex.Trade Review"Hefner provides the reader with an excellent historical background which can help in appreciating the scale of the change now taking place in Islamic education, and their implications for public culture and politics... This book is highly recommended for American and European media pundits and politicians to read and be honest with themselves and their constituents about the positive nature of mainstream madrasas throughout the Muslim world, and stop demonizing them, and the education they provide."--Mohammed M. Book SynopsisAnalyzes liberal religious education in multi-cultural societies and suggests ways in which religious education can help young people learn to take responsibility for their beliefs and life-styles in a responsible manner. This book seeks to reconcile the often contradictory accounts offered by different religions and secular traditions.Trade Review"The author has managed to carve out the niche within the whole field, demonstrating how philosophical ideas can be applied to the social and political situation in which religious education in England and Wales, but also within Europe, finds itself. His approach is partially philosophical but also informed by the knowledge of classroom practice as he lectures on the MA in religious education at Kings College and is therefore in touch with current classroom practice." Rlpg/Galleys Jesuit Postmodern
Book SynopsisIn Jesuit Postmodern, Francis X. Clooney has gathered nine American Jesuit scholars teaching at universities to reflect on their scholarly work, why they engage in it, and how the work they do coheres with their self-understanding as Jesuits. In accounts that weave together scholarly lives and personal stories, the contributors to this volume explore the irreducible diversity of their experiences and criticize the dominant modern synthesis that shaped Jesuit institutions of higher education from the 1960s to the 1990s. While the contrapuntal display of voices enunciated in this collection will unsettle the conventional and still dominant ways of talking about Jesuits, scholarship, and religious intellectual inquiry, Jesuit Postmodern does not end the conversation, but pushes scholars to talk more critically and imaginatively.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introducing Ourselves Chapter 2 Confessions of an Aristotelian Christian Chapter 3 A Philosophical Dissection of a Jesuit Scholar Chapter 4 What Difference Does It Make for Me as a Liturgist to be a Jesuit—or Vice Versa? Lexington Books Stepping Out of the Brain Drain
Book SynopsisStepping Out of the Brain Drain is an important contribution to the intensifying debate about highly skilled migration from developing to developed countries. Addressing the issue from the perspective of Catholic social thought, the authors demonstrate that both the economic and ethical rationales for the teaching''s opposition to ''brain drain'' have been undermined in recent years and show how the adoption of a less critical policy could provide enhanced opportunities for poor countries to accelerate their economic development.Trade ReviewStepping Out of the Brain Drain is important not only because it offers a timely summary of the Catholic teaching on migration and a persuasive challenge to one aspect of that teaching, but also because it offers a model for how lay persons can effectively help the social teaching remain sensitive to the 'signs of the times' as events unfold. The book abundantly evidences its authors' great respect for Catholic social teaching, as well as their great understanding of it and the context in which existing policy developed. -- Marisa Cianciarulo * Association Of American Colleges and Universities *An original, bracing, and controversial rethinking of the 'brain drain.' A good test for those who think they know everything about immigration. -- Michael Novak, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Commission, 1994 Templeton laureateThis is a ground-breaking book and should be read by everybody who cares about the interplay between migration and development. Pistone and Hoeffner detail the contributions that skilled workers make to economic development and poverty reduction in their nations of origin. In an era characterized by globalization, they see the mobility of skilled migrants as a 'gain' for both sending and receiving nations, a gain that very directly addresses the root causes of migration. -- Donald Kerwin, Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.This impressively researched and compassionate book makes the case that today's migrants can often do more to fulfill their obligations to help their families and home communities as migrants than if they remained at home. It raises important questions not only for Catholics but for anyone who is concerned about the ethical implications of migration policies. -- Kathleen Newland, director, Migration Policy InstituteThis book represents a challenge to the teaching Church from two Catholic scholars whose faith convictions run deep and whose knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching is impressive. -- William J. Byron, S.J., Catholic University, author of The Power of Principles: Ethics in the New Corporate CultureThis splendid book provides an insightful, dispassionate, informed and comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of 'brain drain' by two prominent scholars with both a social conscience and a cool head. Every policymaker and scholar interested in this important phenomenon, and in its policy implications, must be required to read it. -- Jagdish Bhagwati, Columbia UniversityThis book provides a fresh and frank discussion of how Catholic social teaching applies to STEP OUT migrants. Lexington Books Catholic Social Thought
Book SynopsisCatholic Social Thought presents detailed commentary and response to the Vatican''s 2005 Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, with contributions from outstanding American scholars. Addressing theology, social theory, the family, economy, government, labor, global society, gender, peace, and the environment, the various authors explore the core theology, explain the Compendium''s themes and arguments, and apply their own intellectual powers to applications of its teachings. Some of the essays are largely expository, some more critical (in both positive and negative senses). Some operate from a standard of magisterial assent in conformity with Ad Tuendam Fidam, others do not. Together, the essays represent the range of Catholic thinking on social issues in the American Church today.Trade ReviewThis invaluable reference tool is essential for those seeking a clear and comprehensive introduction to Catholic social thought, as well as a Catholic-informed social-science and social-policy perspective on these and countless other subjects. * The Catholic Answer *This book is a valuable summary and scholarly examination of this major, crucial social document of the Catholic Church. Lexington Books Augustine and Liberal Education
Book SynopsisAugustine and Liberal Education sheds light on liberal education past and present, from an Augustinian point of view. Ranging from historical investigations of particular themes and issues in the thought of Saint Augustine, to reflections on the role of tradition and community and the challenges and opportunities facing universities in the next century, the contributors return to the sources of traditional reflection while exploring contemporary issues in education.Trade ReviewThis book tries to come to terms with a particular tradition of inquiry in the light of contemporary challenges to liberal education, through the renewal and reevaluation of Augustine's thought and writings. It is an interesting and thought-provoking volume, one that will have particular application to Catholic institutions of higher education, and even Protestant and secular colleges and universities as they seek to define what 'liberal Education' means in today's society. * Mystic Review, June 2001 *The quality of the essays is remarkably uniform, and copious endnotes will please the serious scholar. This is a book that can be appreciated across the humanities, especially in a time when the mission and purpose of church-related education is under serious scrutiny. The essays are too sophisticated to suggest less than a nuanced reading of both Augustine and the current milieu. * The Journal Of Early Christian Studies *The loving and thoughtful study much in evidence in this work would have been appreciated by the person whose writings are honoured here. * The Heythrop Journal *To meditate on the master texts of our culture as we face present challenges is one of the hallmarks of liberal education. The essays in this volume teach not only by what they say, but by the exemplary way in which they show us how learning and judgment, deeply rooted in the thought of Augustine, can be vividly relevant to the needs of today. -- James J. Lexington Books Faithful Imagination in the Academy
Book SynopsisIn the past thirty years there has been a sea change in North American intellectual life regarding the role of religious commitments in academic endeavors. Driven partly by post-modernism and the fragmentation of knowledge and partly by the democratization of the academy in which different voices are celebrated, the appropriate role that religion should play is contested. Some academics insist that religion cannot and must not have a place at the academic table; others insist that religious values should drive the argument. Faithful Imagination in the Academy takes an approach based on dialogue with various viewpoints, claiming neither too much nor too little. Lexington Books The Trouble with Textbooks
Book SynopsisSchool textbooks in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim worlds are filled with anti-Western and anti-Israel propaganda. Most readers will be shocked to discover that history and geography textbooks widely used in America''s elementary and secondary classrooms contain some of the very same inaccuracies about Jews, Judaism, and Israel. Did you know that there is no record of any important Jewish contribution to the sciences? (World Civilizations, Thomson Wadsworth). Or that Christianity was started by a young Palestinian named Jesus? (The World, Scott Foresman/Pearson). Supplemental materials and other classroom influences are even worse. The Trouble with Textbooks exposes the poor scholarship and untruths in textbooks about Jews and Israel. The problems uncovered in this ground-breaking analysis are instructive, and illustrate the need for reform in the way textbooks are developed, written, marketed, and distributed. Substitute another areahow we teach American history, Western civilization, or comparative religionand we have another, equally intriguing case study. The Trouble with Textbooks shows what can go terribly wrong in discussing religion, geography, culture, or historyand in this caseall of them. The Trouble with Textbooks tells a cautionary tale for all readers, whatever their background, of how textbooks that Americans depend on to infuse young people with the values for good citizenship and to help acculturate students into the multicultural salad that is American life, instead disparage some groups and teach historical distortions. With millions of young people using these textbooks each year, the denigration of some should be a concern for all.Trade ReviewThe Trouble with Textbooks is a very important book not only for Jews but for the entire Christian community. This volume is an excellent tool for anyone who is interested in balanced information that is fair and reliable concerning Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. -- Rev. John J. Keane, SA, Franciscan Friars of the AtonementOne of my greatest challenges in the university classroom is to teach critical thinking. Most undergraduates, though, consider the course textbook revealed truth and refuse to question it. The Trouble with Textbooks reveals that what passes for academic writing must be challenged. -- Marc Dollinger, San Francisco State UniversityThis book is a must-read for anyone who cares what American school children are learning about history and religion. I was dismayed to learn just how much our nation's school systems and the publishing industry 'dumb down' vital information about religion and how wrong it is. There is powerful and frightening information in this book that gives readers a sense of outrage. -- Carolivia Herron, PAUSE Creative Writing Program, in partnership with Washington, D.C., Public SchoolsThe Trouble with Textbooks should shock and concern everyone in the educational establishment. This groundbreaking study unflinchingly exposes the dissemination of inaccurate and false history. As the book makes plain, parents and responsible educators must steadfastly demand greater accuracy in the social studies textbooks used to educate entire generations of our schoolchildren. I strongly recommend reading this book from cover to cover. -- Ephraim Isaac, Institute of Semitic Studies, Princeton, New JerseyThe five-year study of 28 history, geography, and social studies textbooks published by Lexington Books, reveals that the most widely used textbooks in America's schools are presenting a distorted view of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and the Middle East. The Trouble with Textbooks shows that textbooks are filled with errors, inaccuracies, and even propaganda....The authors found over 500 erroneous passages in the textbooks. -- 9/24/08 * Market Watch *Gary Tobin and Dennis Ybarra have produced a work of incomparable value. They have exposed an extraordinary pattern of errors, distortions and falsehoods in public school textbooks, teacher training and supplemental materials. More frightening is the stunning extent to which our children are being indoctrinated with anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli materials. Every parent, educator, and policy-maker should read this book. -- Kenneth L. Marcus, City University of New YorkOf great value. Recommended. -- H. M. Most readers will be shocked to discover that history and geography textbooks widely used in America''s elementary and secondary classrooms contain some of the very same inaccuracies about Jews, Judaism, and Israel. Did you know that ''there is no record of any important Jewish contribution to the sciences?'' (World Civilizations, Thomson Wadsworth). Or that ''Christianity was started by a young Palestinian named Jesus?'' (The World, Scott Foresman/Pearson). Substitute another area_how we teaTrade ReviewThe Trouble with Textbooks is a very important book not only for Jews but for the entire Christian community. -- H. M. Miller * CHOICE *This book exposes the poor scholarship and untruths in textbooks about Jews and Israel. Rlpg/Galleys Building the Interfaith Youth Movement
Book SynopsisViolence committed by religious young people has become a regular feature of our daily news reports. What we hear less about are the growing numbers of religious young people from all faith backgrounds who are committed to interfaith understanding and cooperation. Building the Interfaith Youth Movement is the first book to describe this important phenomenon. Contributions include concrete descriptions of various interfaith youth projects across the country_from an arts-program in the South Bronx to a research program at Harvard University to a national organization called the Interfaith Youth Core based in Chicago_written by the founders and leaders of those initiatives. Additional chapters articulate the theory and methodology of this important new movement. This book is a must-read for college chaplains, religious leaders who work with youth, and students and scholars of contemporary religion.Trade ReviewThose working in higher education, or with similar aged youth, will find this volume a valuable resource across campus divisions: administrators in preparing mission and strategic planning, faculty in the classroom, administrators in student affairs, and chaplains in campus ministry offices to name a few. Perhaps [this book can be] most effectively used as a reference book for working groups exploring ways to foster interfaith action. * Collegium: A Colloquy of Faith and Intellectual Life *This is a truly 21st century story that focuses on a new set of movements for social change that are bringing together young people across lines of faith for the work they can do on behalf of all of us. Readers will find programs to emulate, understandings that will sharpen their thinking and tremendous encouragement to add their thoughts to this emerging dialog. -- Ruth Messinger * President, American Jewish World Service *This collection of essays is...to be welcomed....Many of the principles that can be drawn out of them...have universal relevance and can be seen in other initiatives around the globe. -- Elizabeth J. Harris * Journal of Contemporary Religion *With the publication of their breathtakingly comprehensive and creative profile of the emergent interfaith youth movement, Patrice Brodeur and Eboo Patel have both disclosed and helped to create an increasingly coherent social force that exemplifies what Brodeur calls "the global"—the unfolding of global dynamics in local communities. This volume, glistening with new ideas and energies, gathers one innovative voice after another—27 in all—to provide vivid testimony to the progress and potential of various initiatives that can eventually produce a truly transnational youth movement. The world will be the better for the empowerment of religiously alert, tolerant young people who welcome diversity and pluralism as an opportunity rather than a threat. -- R Scott Appleby, Institute for International Peace Studies, Professor of History, University of Notre DameTable of ContentsChapter 1 Acknowledgements Chapter 2 Preface Chapter 3 Introduction Part 4 CONTEXTS OF INTERFAITH YOUTH WORK Chapter 5 Affirming Identity, Acheiving Pluralism Chapter 6 Young Adult Development, Religious Identity, and Interreligious Solidarity in an Interfaith Learning Community Chapter 7 Theologies of Interreligious Encounters and Their Relevance to Youth Part 8 INTERNATIONAL INTERFAITH ORGANIZATIONS Chapter 9 Towards a Transnational Interfaith Youth Network in Higher Education Chapter 10 The Gujarat Young Adult Project of the International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF) Chapter 11 Youth Leadership Chapter 12 The Next Generation Part 13 HIGHER EDUCATION Chapter 14 Youth and the Pluralism Project Chapter 15 Seminarians Interacting Chapter 16 Towards a Multifaith Community at Wellesley College Chapter 17 Bringing Interfaith to the University of Illinois Chapter 18 Ariculating What is at Stake in Interreligious Work Part 19 SECONDARY EDUCATION Chapter 20 Teaching World Religions Chapter 21 Secondary School Teacher Training in Religious Studies Chapter 22 Training Teachers in American Religious Diversity Part 23 COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS Chapter 24 The Interfaith Youth Core Chapter 25 Interfaith Youth Leadership Council of the Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston Chapter 26 The High School Youth Program of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington Chapter 27 The Sacred Stories of the Ghetto Film School Part 28 IMMERSION PROJECTS Chapter 29 Spirit into Action Chapter 30 E Pluribus Union Chapter 31 The Chicago Interfaith Service House Chapter 32 Face to Face/Faith to Faith Part 33 PASTORAL WORK Chapter 34 Ask Pastor Paul Chapter 35 Conclusion Chapter 36 Epilogue Chapter 37 Index Chapter 38 About the Contributors

University Press of America Id Rather Be Dead Than Be a Girl
Book SynopsisIn I''d Rather Be Dead Than Be a Girl, the author explains a threefold thesis of a study that language influences how human beings perceive reality, that the development of theoretical constructs can help explain resistances to and possibilities for inclusive language, and that the implementation of inclusive language is an important goal for religious education. The study begins with a description of the problem to be considered, that is, the role of sexist language in perpetuating sexual discrimination. Beginning in the third chapter, insights from Alfred North Whitehead''s philosophy of organism, Benjamin Lee Whorf''s principle of linguistic relativity, and Jean Piaget''s genetic epistemology are used to investigate the stubbornness of sexist linguistic habits and the bases for developing inclusive linguistic habits. Finally, inclusive language is shown to be important for religious education, and some strategies for implementing inclusive language are presented.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Preface Chapter 2 1.
