  • The Oxford Illustrated History of the Holy Land

Oxford University Press The Oxford Illustrated History of the Holy Land

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Oxford Illustrated History of the Holy Land covers the 3,000 years which saw the rise of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--and relates the familiar stories of the sacred texts with the fruits of modern scholarship. Beginning with the origins of the people who became the Israel of the Bible, it follows the course of the ensuing millennia down to the time when the Ottoman Empire succumbed to British and French rule at the end of the First World War.Parts of the story, especially as known from the Bible, will be widely familiar. Less familiar are the ways in which modern research, both from archaeology and from other ancient sources, sometimes modify this story historically. Better understanding, however, enables us to appreciate crucial chapters in the story of the Holy Land, such as how and why Judaism developed in the way that it did from the earlier sovereign states of Israel and Judah and the historical circumstances in which Christianity emerged from its Jewish cradle. Later parts of the story are vital not only for the history of Islam and its relationships with the two older religions, but also for the development of pilgrimage and religious tourism, as well as the notions of sacred space and of holy books with which we are still familiar today. From the time of Napoleon on, European powers came increasingly to develop both cultural and political interest in the region, culminating in the British and French conquests which carved out the modern states of the Middle East. Sensitive to the concerns of those for whom the sacred books of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are of paramount religious authority, the authors all try sympathetically to show how historical information from other sources, as well as scholarly study of the texts themselves, enriches our understanding of the history of the region and its prominent position in the world''s cultural and intellectual history.Trade ReviewFor those interested in the Bible, history or spiritual pilgrimage, this is a captivating guide and will be a great asset to anyone who has travelled, or will travel, to the Holy Land. * Mark W. Scarlata, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament *The Oxford Illustrated History of the Holy Land is full of ... remarkable details. Thirteen fact-packed chapters, each by an expert in his or her field, take us on a tour from the earliest recorded history onwards. It is a remarkable, readable, and useful achievement one that will illuminate a thousand sermons and provide much to think about for anyone interested in the subject. * William Whyte, Church Times *Three great world faiths have invested so many hopes and passions in one relatively small part of the eastern Mediterranean seaboard and its hinterland, that there are risks even in calling it by a single name. This collective study of the "God-trodden land" is a richly informative, reliable, and sane guide to its troubled history: one valuable contribution to crafting it a more peaceful present and future. * Diarmaid MacCulloch, Professor of the History of the Church, University of Oxford *A fascinating read overall. * Medieval Archaeology Journal vol 67.2 *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1: Avraham Faust: The Birth of Israel 2: Lester L. Book SynopsisHas the art of accompaniment been lost in Western culture? Could non-judgemental accompaniment be the answer to rising levels of isolation and loneliness? Could spending time with others from different or marginalised backgrounds reduce feelings of 'otherness' and lead to a more open, trusting society?Exploring the themes above, this welcoming book offers models of relationships, interdependence, and community for individuals who are marginalised from society. It emphasises the importance of being with people and time spent in physical activity and in the natural world, without demands being put on expressing feelings or even speaking out loud. It draws on the author's own vast experience and work with those on the edge of society - including living in a Christian community which welcomes those in terms of crisis, living in a Palestinian village, working with adults with autism and as chaplain to Gypsies and Travellers - providing a varied, insightful and heart-warming view on the benefits of accompaniment.Trade ReviewProfound, practical, gentle, adventurous, simple, witty - this book reflects the journey and personality of a daring, devout disciple. It offers joyful, if never easy, ways to heal our loneliness and brokenness through being together: listening, working, laughing, walking and making peace. -- Tobias Jones, author of A Place of RefugeThis beautifully written book draws on a rich fund of stories of community, ministry, and pilgrimage, and on centuries of spiritual wisdom from many traditions and cultures, in describing what it means to accompany another, and so resist the deepening culture of isolation fostered by modern individualism. Once you start reading you will find it hard to put down, as I did! And you will be blessed by the sense that in the voice of the author, you feel something of how it is to be accompanied by him. -- Michael Northcott, Emeritus Professor of Ethics, University of EdinburghTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Foreword; Preface; Introduction; 1. Trade Review"Offering a wellspring of divinity, this book advocates compassion and self-love." * O, The Oprah Magazine *“Many people have got into witchcraft in recent years as a response to terrifying world events, which isn’t surprising; witchcraft and practical, community-based activism have long gone hand in hand. In Light Magic for Dark Times, Lisa Marie Basile has listed a wide range of spells for activist witches, focused on building protection, sending power or comfort to those who need it, and focusing on self care.” * BookRiot *"This book is perfect for the beginner who has yet to see themselves reflected in the practices of nature-based faiths. With rituals that combat burnout, foster productivity, and heal internal strife, Lisa Marie Basile's Light Magic For Dark Times shows readers how seemingly esoteric spellcraft actually applies to their everyday lives." * Refinery29 *"Basile’s voice is soothing, and she remains the perfect amount of Scorpio mysterious—she never tires the reader with long personal stories, but instead slips in little details of her interesting life, just as much as context allows. This makes her feel like a warm, curious guide who you’d want to get to know over blue lotus tea, probably served in antique Italian bone china owned by someone’s Strega Nona. … What I like most about Light Magic For Dark Times, aside from its beautiful illustrations and narration, is that I feel like I did a good amount of healing work just doing the exercises in the books before I even tried any of the spells." * BUST *"Lisa Marie Basile’s Light Magic for Dark Times is a treasure. She takes self-care and injects it with magic, with thought, and with the complexities—light and dark—that make us human. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn examination of the beliefs and history of the secretive Yezidi sect• Explains how the Yezidis worship Melek Ta’us, the Peacock Angel, an enigmatic figure often identified as “the devil” or Satan, yet who has been redeemed by God to rule a world of beauty and spiritual realization • Examines Yezidi antinomian doctrines of opposition, their cosmogony, their magical lore and taboos, the role of angels, ritual, and symbology, and how the Yezidi faith relates to other occult traditions such as alchemy • Presents the first English translation of the poetry of Caliph Yazid ibn Muawiya, venerated by the Yezidis as Sultan Ezi The Yezidis are an ancient people who live in the mountainous regions on the borders of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. This secretive culture worships Melek Ta’us, the Peacock Angel, an enigmatic figure often identified as “the devil” or Satan, hence the sect is known as devil-worshippers and has long been persecuted. Presenting a study of the interior, esoteric dimensions of Yezidism, Peter Lamborn Wilson examines the sect’s antinomian doctrines of opposition, its magical lore and taboos, and its relation to other occult traditions such as alchemy. He explains how the historical founder of this sect was a Sufi of Ummayad descent, Sheik Adi ibn Musafir, who settled in this remote region around 1111 AD and found a pre-Islamic sect already settled there. Sheik Adi was so influenced by the original sect that he departed from orthodox Islam, and by the 15th century the sect was known to worship the Peacock Angel, Melek Ta’us, with all its “Satanic” connotations. Revealing the spiritual flowering that occurs in an oral culture, the author examines Yezidi cosmogony, how they are descended from the androgynous Adam--before Eve was created--as well as the role of angels, ritual, alchemy, symbology, and color in Yezidi religion. He also presents the first English translation of the poetry of Caliph Yazid ibn Muawiya, venerated by the Yezidis as Sultan Ezi.Showing the Yezidi sect to be a syncretic faith of pre-Islamic, Zoroastrian, Christian, Pagan, Sufi, and other influences, Wilson reveals how these worshippers of the Peacock Angel do indeed worship “the Devil”--but the devil is not “evil.” God has redeemed him, and he rules a world of beauty and spiritual realization.Trade Review“If as some Yezidis maintain, we are all angels enjoying a temporary existence as men and women, we need no rulers, regulations, or exoteric religions. In Peacock Angel a lifelong defender of anarchism blends poetry, erudition, and spiritual insight to honor this misunderstood and persecuted group, perhaps our closest link with the primordial tradition itself.” * Joscelyn Godwin, author of Mystery Religions in the Ancient World *“Peacock Angel penetrates the esoteric secrets of Yezidi spirituality. The Yezidi, who believe they are followers of the oldest of religions, likely go back more than 10,000 years. Wilson explores Yezidism as a pure religion that rejects the law in order to be free to choose religious spontaneity, freedom, and passion: the way to be mad for God. Delving into their oral and shamanic roots, Wilson shows how the Yezidi ferociously practiced their love of the divine. This lovely book is a pearl of wisdom that reveals the Yezidi passion to know God in our soulless world. A must-read for spiritual seekers in our times.” * Barbara Hand Clow, author of Awakening the Planetary Mind and The Mind Chronicles *“Only the heterodox intellect of Peter Lamborn Wilson could expose the deeper truth behind today’s tragic headlines: that one of the world’s most brutally persecuted religious sects, the Yezidis--reduced by the thoughtless to be worshippers of a Satan that the thoughtless neither understand nor wish to understand-- may hold the key to the revitalization of didactic religion. As Wilson’s enthralling arcanum reveals, the question is less whether the Yezidis can survive but whether we can survive without them.” * Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award-winning author of Occult America, The Miracle Club, and Uncertain Places *Table of ContentsPreface: Who Are the Yezidis? It is a thousand-year adventure that moves from the ruins of the once-mighty city of Rome, sacked by barbarians in AD 410, to the first contacts between the old and new worlds in the sixteenth century. It shows how, from a state of crisis and collapse, the West was rebuilt and came to dominate the entire globe. The book identifies three key themes that underpinned the success of the West: commerce, conquest and Christianity. Across 16 chapters, blending Dan Jones's trademark gripping narrative style with authoritative analysis, Powers and Thrones shows how, at each stage in this story, successive western powers thrived by attracting – or stealing – the most valuable resources, ideas and people from the rest of the world. It casts new light on iconic locations – Rome, Paris, Venice, Constantinople – and it features some of history's most famous and notorious men and women. This is a book written about – and for – an age of profound change, and it asks the biggest questions about the West both then and now. Where did we come from? What made us? Where do we go from here? Book SynopsisThis book is written with the objective of reasonably addressing the need of Muslim gays and lesbians for a life which involves intimacy, affection and companionship within the confines of a legal contract. Contemporary conservative Muslim leaders unreasonably promote false marriages with straight spouses, failing which they prescribe the solution of permanent celibacy as a test. This book delves into an extensive scholarship on the same sources that conservative Muslim leaders draw onthe Qur'an, Hadith and jurisprudence. It is argued that the primary sources of Muslim knowledge addressed sexual acts between the same gender in the context of inhospitality, exploitation, coercion and disease, but not true same-sex unions; past Muslim scholarship is silent on the issue of sexual orientation and Muslim same-sex unions. The arguments of contemporary conservative Muslim leaders are deconstructed and the case for Muslim same-sex unions is made based on jurisprudential principles and thoroughTrade ReviewThis is a ground-breaking book which showcases both the bravery and the erudition of its authors. They make the case for same sex-unions in Islam, a case which needs to heard, especially by those who disagree with their conclusions. One wishes for this book the wide readership it deserves. -- Amir Hussain, Loyola Marymount UniversityThis book is a constructive analysis and critique of Islamic legal thinking on homosexuality starting with the assumption that all human beings deserve to love and be loved. Rather than abandon Islam to exclusivists, it stakes a claim of inclusivity at the center of a committed Muslim life. This important book will be especially impactful for Muslim readers for whom the Law matters, whether they be Queer Muslims or the family, friends, or community members of Queer Muslims who are open to accepting the full and equal dignity of all human beings. For non-Muslim lay people, academics, and students alike, the book provides a crucial opportunity to observe how Muslims struggle to work through contentious issues within their own boundaries of faith and practice. -- Laury Silvers, University of TorontoDrawing upon the Islamic values of justice, human dignity, and alleviating hardship, the authors open up possibilities for queer Muslims not to be denied a viable and legally acceptable basis for marriage based on Islamic norms, and deserving of the dignity accorded to upstanding members of the communities in which they live and work and carry out their lives. An informed and richly documented work, this book is sure to educate and enlighten anyone interested in broader questions of sexuality and Islam. -- Zayn Kassam, Pomona CollegeThis comprehensive and unflinching study sets the stage for serious scholarly debates to come. The authors delve deep into the Islamic legal tradition, clearly describing both the challenges involved with reconciling Islamic law and same-sex unions, and the potential for Islamic law to not only tolerate same-sex unions, but to embrace them. This book calls us to rethink what is possible in Islamic law, and it will be an invaluable resource for religious studies scholars and social justice advocates alike. -- Rumee Ahmed, University of British ColumbiaTable of ContentsForeword, Scott Siraj al-Haqq Kugle Introduction 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhile he is widely acknowledged as the most important Russian thinker of the nineteenth century, Vladimir Soloviev’s place in the landscape of world philosophy nevertheless remains uncertain. Approaching him through a single synoptic lens, this book foregrounds his unique envisioning of the interaction between humanity and the material world. By investigating the development of a single theme in his work—his idea of the “spiritualization of matter”, the “task” of humanity—Smith constructs a rounded picture of Soloviev’s overall importance to an understanding. If nineteenth-century thought, as well as to modern theology and philosophy. The picture that emerges is of a writer whose contribution to a Christian philosophy of matter resonates with many of the religious debates of modernity.Trade Review"Oliver Smith’s Vladimir Soloviev and the Spiritualization of Matter is one of the best recent works in English about Soloviev, indeed about Russian philosophy in general. It tackles complex philosophical concepts with unusual clarity, lucidity and cohesion, exploring the evolution of Soloviev’s philosophical system, and offering detailed and nuanced analyses of the relationships of Soloviev's ideas with those of his great predecessors (Plato, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Jewish Kabbala etc.)." -- Lazar Fleishman, Stanford University"Intelligently, poignantly, and with clear sight, Smith gives us a portrait of Soloviev and his refusal, indeed, his "inability to think the divine without the human." I myself could formulate no better description of this important Russian religious writer, who throughout his multi-faceted career as poet, philosopher, teacher, and journalist sought ever to articulate the ways in which matter can, is, and must be spiritualized. We are all the better for Soloviev's various writings on the subject, and now for Smith's cogent analysis of them all. Thank you both!" -- Judith Deutsch Kornblatt, Department of Slavic Studies and Literature, Wisconisin University"This book is a welcome contribution to a growing body of literature on Russian sophiology. Weaving his narrative around Soloviev’s spiritual and intellectual biography, Oliver Smith offers a nuanced and erudite account of Soloviev’s metaphysics of all-unity. Smith successfully shows that at the core of Soloviev’s metaphysical project was a consistent integration of spiritual and material aspects of reality, epitomized in the incarnation." -- Paul Gavrilyuk, Associate Professor of Historical Theology, University of St Thomas, Saint Paul, MinnesotaThis brilliant study of Russia’s greatest religious philosopher delivers much more than its title suggests...It encompasses the whole of Solovev’s philosophy; the spiritualization of matter is a part. Smith’s book, despite its modest claim to being about one part, is really about the whole. It conveys that whole effectively and powerfully. -- Randall A. Poole, The College of St. Scholastica

Rowman & Littlefield Prayerbook of Christ: Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe contributions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer to the fields of systematics, ethics, sociology, and theology have become well known in recent decades. What has been overlooked, however, is the significant contribution he has also made to the study and interpretation of the Psalms. Bonhoeffer’s approach to the Psalms is built upon an understanding of its relationship to prayer and to Jesus Christ the Crucified One. Employing methods drawn from both premodern and modern exegetes, Bonhoeffer develops a Christological interpretation of the Psalms which, in certain key aspects, has not been seen in the history of interpretation. His is an interpretation informed by the historical reality of Jesus Christ praying the prayers of the Psalms in his incarnation. As the church of today prays the Psalms, it is encouraged by understanding that they are also praying the very words which Jesus prayed. The Psalms are not only the prayerbook of the church, more fundamentally, they are the prayerbook of Jesus Christ. In this book, Pribbenow explores Bonhoeffer’s unique Christological interpretation of the Psalms by means of a concentrated analysis of its development, coherence, and significance, tracing it from its formation at Berlin University, into the years of development at the Confessing Church Preacher’s Seminary in Finkenwalde, and through the months of interrogation and imprisonment at the hands of the Third Reich.Trade ReviewThe book is well-argued, being not just a chronology of Bonhoeffer’s writings on the Psalms but a study of how and why that thought changed in significant ways over time, in response to the changing and dramatic circumstances of his life and the impact of particular sources (Luther, Holl, Barth and others) on him. One of the book’s strengths is its setting of the historical background of Western Christianity’s treatment of the Psalms over the centuries, into which Bonhoeffer emerged in the first half of the 20th century at a critical juncture in the crisis facing post-liberal theology and biblical interpretation. It is this combination of close study of the psalm-related Bonhoeffer material (detailed to a degree which I think is quite new in Bonhoeffer scholarship) with the larger story of biblical interpretation which gives much of this book its value. The book thus makes a significant contribution both to Bonhoeffer literature and to the study of biblical exegesis. It merits study by Bonhoeffer-focused students and readers, but also circles concerned more widely with biblical interpretation, and indeed by students of liturgy as well. * International Bonhoeffer Society *This is an excellent, scholarly inquiry into Bonhoeffer's Christ-centred interpretation of the Hebrew Psalms, which illuminates well the theological and spiritual resources that fed his courageous resistance to Nazism. Especially helpful is the way it locates Bonhoeffer against the wider background of Christian treatment of the psalms over the centuries as well as the crisis he faced in his own lifetime - and the questions which still face us today in the relations of Christianity and Judaism. -- Keith ClementsThe figure of Dietrich Bonhoeffer has received much scholarly attention over recent years, ranging from his intellectual contributions to Protestant theology to his sacrificial resistance against Hitler. Less, however, has been done on Bonhoeffer’s biblical exegesis, and much less on his place in the history of biblical interpretation. Dr. Pribbenow admirably helps to fill this gap. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christological Interpretation of the Psalms offers us a view of Bonhoeffer as a theologian thoroughly conversant with the assumptions and methods of modern exegesis, yet as one who cares deeply about the Christian use of the Scriptures. By attending to Bonhoeffer’s personal context and development against the backdrop of the wider history of interpretation, Pribbenow reveals Bonhoeffer’s own unique solution to the hermeneutical challenges of reading and praying the Psalter. As such, Bonhoeffer gives us a viable approach to the Psalms today—not merely as a record of ancient religious piety or as a collection of devotional material, but as the very prayerbook of Christ. -- Erik H. Book SynopsisA twelve session study guide exploring the theme of the transforming power of God in our lives. The bestselling book Sea Changed looked at how God transformed Kate Nicholas' life. Now in Sea Changed: A Companion Guide Kate takes the lessons she learnt from her personal journey and encourages us all to embark on the adventure of faith by living a transformed life. Transformation is foundational to our faith as followers of Christ. Indeed the very meaning and purpose of our lives is to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus, who himself is the image of God in human form. As we read the Bible and integrate it into our lives, we are allowing the Holy Spirit to work a transformation in our lives. But God can also use the circumstances of our lives to help work this process of transformation. Kate's own dramatic testimony demonstrates how both these aspects have been fundamental in her own journey, and she weaves together both biblical and practical experience in this companion guide to help encourage us all to reflect more closely God's nature. Using a mix of biblical teaching, personal testimony and questions for reflection, Kate helps us to understand what God wants to do in our lives and how we can apply the lessons learnt to grow more like him. The points for reflection in each session are divided into biblical study and personal application sections, making this an ideal resource to study either personally or in a discipleship or small group setting.

Book SynopsisArtemis is a literary, iconographic, and archaeological study of the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt, who presided over the transitions and mediations between the wild and the civilized, youth and maturity, life and death. Beginning with a study of the early origins of Artemis and her cult in the Bronze and Archaic Ages, Budin explores the goddess'' persona and her role in the lives of her worshippers. This volume examines her birth and childhood, her place in the divine family, her virginity, and her associations with those places where the wilds become the cities of just men. The focus then turns to Artemis' role in the lives of children and women, particularly how she helps them navigate the transition to adulthood and, perhaps too often, death. Budin goes on to reconsider some of the more harrowing aspects of Artemis' mythology, such as plague and bloodshed, while also examining some of her kinder, oft overlooked associations. Finally, the role of Artemis in theTrade Review"Stephanie Budin’s Artemis is a richly detailed and engaging study that offers a welcome contribution to the fields of Greek religion and mythology. Expertly weaving together evidence from literary texts and inscriptions, archaeology and the visual arts, Budin uncovers the many meanings and layers of Artemis through her origin stories, her iconic roles as virgin and huntress, and her mediating function as a goddess of critical female transitions. With the passion and wit of a great teacher, Budin convincingly demonstrates that the worship of Artemis was truly a life-or-death matter for the ancient Greeks." - Monica S. Cyrino, University of New Mexico"Although principally writing for undergraduates, historian Budin not only surveys the current scholarship but also argues for revisions; most compellingly, that Artemis was not associated with warfare, and that the evidence claimed for that view is from the Roman period, or is methodologically flawed. While rigorous, the volume remains clear and approachable: all Greek is translated; arguments based on Greek language are judiciously chosen and lucid. An important book for collections supporting study of mythology, religion, and literature, and likely to appeal to a broader audience...Summing Up: Highly recommended." - P. E. Book SynopsisŠtofaník provides a unique, personal reading of weak theology and tries to inhabit the gap between it and its "founder," John D. Caputo. In this distinctive exploration of John D. Caputo's work, Štefan Štofaník traces Caputo's journey of philosophical discovery from his earlier, more conventional academic writings to his later, almost confessional works of weak theology and his deep engagement with Derrida. Štofaník draws upon Caputo's life story to help explain sudden shifts in Caputo's thinking, offers intricate readings of philosophical passages that have all too often been taken for granted, and joins in Caputo's effort to find a theology that can be trusted and that does not rely upon dogmatic and hierarchical authority. At the same time, Štofaník subtly disagrees with aspects of Caputo's view and turns to the work of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry as a way to suggest that one cannot take leave of the tradition of theology as easily as Caputo thinks. At times, The Adventure of Weak Theology reads like a letter to Caputo, and Štofaník's own passion for theology, his deep understanding of Caputo's work, and his gift for writing makes this an immensely appealing book for both admirers and critics of Caputo.

Book SynopsisIn 1913, just before the outbreak of the First World War, a 19-year-old Czech Jew named Jiri Langer left his assimilated family to live in the remote village of Belz, Galicia (now Ukraine). He had gone to live under the Chassidic (or Hasidic) Rokeach dynasty, a line of Rabbis that survives to this day. Nine Gates is the record of Langer''s time amongst these isolated Chassidic mystics of Eastern Galicia, and a window into their world. Langer tells of their enthusiasm, their simple faith, their ecstasies, their austerities, their feasts, their wonder-working Holy Rabbis and their esoteric wisdom. Most of all, he recounts a collection of shrewd and earthy folk tales told by the holy men who ruled these little spiritual kingdoms for generation after generation.Over 80 years since its original publication in Czech, this translation by Stephen Jolly remains the definitive English version of this towering work of Jewish introspection. Book SynopsisWild Mercy is essential reading for anyone ready to awaken the feminine mystic within and birth her loving, creative, and untamed power into the world. "Mystical brilliance at its best." —Caroline Myss "No one can take us into the fiery and tender depths of the sacred feminine with more skill, humor, clarity, and vibrant naked honesty than Mirabai Starr." —Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope and The Return of the Mother We live in a world that has suffered the abuses of an unbalanced masculine rule for thousands of years—but the feminine is rising. "Seeds of feminine wisdom that have been quietly germinating underground are now breaking through the surface," writes Mirabai Starr. "Women everywhere are rising to the collective call to step up and repair our broken Earth. And we are activating a paradigm shift such as the world has never seen." With Wild Mercy, Mirabai shares the subversive wisdom and fierce compassion of the feminine mystic across cultural boundaries and throughout history. From saints and sages, to goddesses and archetypal energies, to contemporary teachers and seekers—you’ll meet women who blazed a path that will illuminate your own. Each chapter explores a different facet of feminine mysticism through a tapestry of teachings, reflections, and stories, along with a practice for integrating the chapter’s themes into your own life. As you journey through these pages, you’ll explore: Taking refuge in contemplative practice with St. Teresa of Avila and the Shekinah • Longing, embodiment, and union as the heart of feminine spiritual practice with the Hindu poet Mirabai and Mary Magdalene • Your relationship with the Earth, motherhood in all its forms, and a loving call to action alongside Gaia and Ix Chel • Community and the web of life with Indra, the Beguines, and female prophets throughout history • Wild, playful, and compassionate mercy with Tara and Kuan Yin • Finding joy in creativity and the arts with Saraswati and Chiyo-ni • More inspiration from archetypal goddesses and amazing women past and present—Julian of Norwich, the Sufi saint Rabia, Pachamama, Sophia, Old Spider Woman, Hildegard of Bingen, Demeter, Kali, and more Wild Mercy provides a much-needed alternative to the models of religion and spirituality that have dominated history. Here, Mirabai invites you to welcome the wisdom of women back into the collective field where it may transform the human family, heal the ravaged Earth, and awaken the divine love in our hearts.

Book SynopsisThe first major study of the idea of repentance, or tawba,in Islam. This book offers the first extensive treatment in a European language of tawba in Islam. Conventionally translated as "repentance," tawba includes the broader sense of returning to God. Khalil examines this wider notion in the early period of Sufism with a particular focus on the formative years of the tradition between Muasibi and Abu alib al-Makki. Beginning with an extensive survey of the semantic field of the term as outlined in Arabic lexicography, Khalil offers a detailed analysis of the concept in Muslim scripture. He then examines tawba as a complex psychological process involving interior conversion and a complete, unwavering commitment to the spiritual life. The ideas of a number of prominent figures from the first few centuries of Islam are used to illuminate the historical development of tawba and its role in early praxis-oriented Sufism.

But not I. For they have far more to fear from me... On the day of her beloved grandmother's funeral, Marta discovers that she is to become governess to the young daughter of Sir William Pritchard. Separated from her lover and discarded by her family, Marta has no choice but to journey to Pritchard's ancient and crumbling house, Fyneshade, in the wilds of Derbyshire. All is not well at Fyneshade. Marta's pupil, little Grace, can be taught nothing, and Marta takes no comfort from the silent servants who will not meet her eye. More intriguing is that Sir William is mysteriously absent, and his son and heir Vaughan is forbidden to enter the house. Marta finds herself drawn to Vaughan, despite the warnings of the housekeeper that he is a danger to all around him. But Marta is no innocent to be preyed upon. Guided by the dark gift taught to her by her grandmother, she has made her own plans. And it will take more than a family riven by murderous secrets to stop her... • David

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA reexamination of the biblical David, legendary warrior, poet, and king, by one of America's most respected rabbis Of all the figures in the Bible, David arguably stands out as the most perplexing and enigmatic. He was many things: a warrior who subdued Goliath and the Philistines; a king who united a nation; a poet who created beautiful, sensitive verse; a loyal servant of God who proposed the great Temple and founded the Messianic line; a schemer, deceiver, and adulterer who freely indulged his very human appetites. David Wolpe, whom Newsweek called the most influential rabbi in America, takes a fresh look at biblical David in an attempt to find coherence in his seemingly contradictory actions and impulses. The author questions why David holds such an exalted place in history and legend, and then proceeds to unravel his complex character based on information found in the book of Samuel and later literature. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of an exceptional human being who, despite his many flaws, was truly beloved by God.Trade Review"This is an excellent study of the most fascinating character in the Old Testament."—Wall Street Journal"How can a man who murders his lover's husband in order to cover up an adulterous affair be fit to be king? . . . Wolpe gently and gracefully explores the many facets—king, sinner, father, lover, and husband, among others—that together create David's outsized personality . . . In the end, the author observes, contemporary readers identify with David so well because he is full of contradictions, and he is great because of this complexity, not in spite of it."—Publishers WeeklyFinalist for the 2014 National Jewish Book Awards sponsored by the Jewish Book Council in the Biography, Autobiography and Memoir category"A sensitive and utterly unsparing reading of the most attractive and least edifying character in the Hebrew Bible."—Jack Miles

Book SynopsisWhen Buddhists say ''things arise due to causes and conditions,'' they mean things come into being from a whole assembly of interrelated factors and events. We cannot trace a linear history or causal chain of events to their arising; they just come into being when the appropriate causes and conditions congregate at an appropriate time and place. When the causes and conditions that perpetuate or sustain the existence of that particular entity cease to present themselves, that particular entity will then disintegrate. Letter To A Friend explores coordinating body, speech and mind i such a way that produces positive karma and good outcomes. The Buddhist approach to moral or ethical values is not moralistic. Our moral and ethical values are part of a moral psychology, and part of our spiritual aspirations and orientation; they are not just about conduct.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe story of the spiritual journey of the famous Tibetan yogi Milarepa is often told, but less well known are the stories of his encounters with those he met and taught after his own Enlightenment, eleven of which are the catalyst for volumes 18 and 19 of the Complete Works. The first three were originally published in The Yogi's Joy, and to these have been added an intriguing fourth, `The Shepherd's Search for Mind'. The other seven stories form a sequence tracing the relationship between Milarepa and his disciple Rechungpa, from their first meeting to their final parting, when Rechungpa is exhorted to go and teach the Dharma himself. As portrayed in The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa, Rechungpa is a promising disciple, but he has a lot to learn, being sometimes proud, distracted, anxious, desirous of comfort and praise, over-attached to book learning, stubborn, sulky and liable to go to extremes. In other words, he is very human, and surely recognizable to anyone who has embarked on the spiritual path. He all too often takes his teacher's advice the wrong way, or simply ignores it, and it takes all of Milarepa's skill, compassion and patience to keep their relationship intact and help his unruly disciple to stay on the path to Enlightenment. Sangharakshita's commentary is based on seminars he gave to young, enthusiastic but as yet inexperienced Dharma followers, and while much can be gleaned from it about the path of practice of the Kagyu tradition, the main emphasis is simply on how to overcome the difficulties that are sure to befall the would-be spiritual practitioner, how to learn what we need to learn - in short, the art of discipleship.
