Shambhala Publications Inc The Way of Ch'an: Essential Texts of the Original
Book SynopsisThis sweeping collection of new translations paints a brilliant picture of the development of Ch?an (Zen) Buddhism, China?s most radical philosophical and meditative tradition. In this landmark anthology of some two dozen translations, celebrated translator David Hinton shows how Ch''an (Japanese: Zen)?too long considered a perplexing school of Chinese Buddhism?was in truth a Buddhist-inflected form of Taoism, China''s native system of spiritual philosophy. The texts in The Way of Ch?an build from seminal Taoism through the ?Dark-Enigma Learning? literature and on to the most important pieces from all stages of the classical Ch?an tradition. Guided by Hinton?s accessible introductions, readers will encounter texts and authors including: I Ching (c. 12th century BCE) Lao Tzu (c. 6th century BCE Bodhidharma (active c. 500-550 CE) Sixth Patriarch Prajna-Able (Hui Neng, 638-713) Cold Mountain (Han Shan: c. 8th-9th centuries) Yellow-Bitterroot Mountain (Huang Po, d. 850) Blue-Cliff Record (c. 1040) Through this steadily deepening and transformative reading experience, readers will see the profound and intricate connections between native Chinese philosophy, Taoism, and Ch?an. Contemporary Zen students and practitioners will never see their tradition in the same way again.

Fons Vitae,US The Censure of This World Volume 26: Book 26 of
Book SynopsisBeing the twenty-sixth book of The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya' 'ulum al-din), The Book of the Censure of This World (Kitab Dhamm al-dunya) seeks to persuade its reader of the folly of worldly pleasures and possessions. To do so, al-Ghazali begins with a collection of Islamic primary-source texts that speak to the dangers of this world from a variety of angles. He then adds to this collection fourteen metaphors for this world that illustrate its perfidious nature. In a third subsection, al-Ghazali provides an original rationale for renouncing worldly enjoyments, and he furnishes his reader with a blueprint for determining what constitutes 'this world' in its most dangerous sense. In a fourth and final subsection, al-Ghazali applies a sociological theory to enumerate the essential human vocations and identify the mechanisms through which these lead people away from God.

Oxford University Press Karl Barth
Book SynopsisChristiane Tietz relates Karl Barth's fascinating life in conflict - conflict with the theological mainstream, against National Socialism, and privately, under one roof with his wife and his mistress, in conflict with himself.Trade ReviewThis is a maginificent, engrossing lucid and comprehensive treatment of the most important theologian of the modern era. Tietz has given not only to Barth scholarship but also to the history of theology in the twentieth century a great gift. We are in her debt. She reminds us of Barth's abiding preoccupation with God, and specifically with Jesus Christ who is "the event God's grace, a new beginning between God and humanity that is grounded solely in God". She also helps us undertsand something of the conflicts that this preoccupation encouraged. * Christopher R. J. Holmes, Pro Ecclesia *Tietz's book presents us with a golden opportunity to get up to speed on the current understanding of Barth, both the man and his theology * James J Cassidy, New Horizons in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church *Tietz's Barth biography is a book worthy of recommendation not only for professional Barth researchers, but for everyone (even non-theologians) interested in church history and in contemporary history. * Frank Jehle, University of St. Gallen, St. Gallen, Switzerland, International Journal of Systematic Theology *Tietz's work fills a major scholarly lacuna and deserves wide readership among pastors, teachers, students, and lay believers. * J. Scott Jackson, The Living Church *... Tietz's primary achievement here is surely to map the intellectual development of Barth and to locate that contextually within the political circumstances that surrounded him. * Kevin Hargaden, Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice, Studies in Christian Ethics *Tietz has written a readable and meticulously researched biography of Karl Barth (1886-1968). She integrates Barth's life and work, and a very ''human'' Karl Barth emerges. * D.K. McKim, CHOICE Connect, Vol. 59 No. 8 *Selected as a 2021 Book of the Year by Alan Billings, Church TimesTietz's book is outstanding: her chapter-length summary of Barth's monumental, multi-volume 'Church Dogmatics' (1932-67), theologically the cornerstone and pinnacle of his achievement, is among the best short treatments of it I have read. * Stephen J. Plant, Times Literary Supplement *Tietz provides a sound and useful orientation to Barth's life and work. * Michael Banner, The Tablet *Remarkable ... meticulously researched and thoroughly referenced... [it] will become a standard text for all engaging with Barth's theology for generations to come. * Natalie Watson, Church Times *Tietz uses an impressive array of primary sources such as letters to his friend Eduard Thurneysen to chart Barth's life. * Paul Richardson, Church of England Newspaper *Very readable and accessible... Tietz's biography is a good entry into [Barth's] life and thought. * Richard A. Kauffman, Christian Century *Karl Barth's life story is worth telling. Or, better still, worth reading. A new biography, Karl Barth: A Life in Conflict by Christiane Tietz, tells it well... It is a compelling read. * Neil Richardson, Methodist Recorder *Christiane Tietz compellingly explores the interactions between Barth's personal and political biography and his theology... an evocative portrait of a theologian * Englewood Review of Books *[Tietz] is a reliable guide to her academic grandfather and the biography functions as a sound, accessible introduction to Barth's thought. * R. R. Reno, First Things *Tietz successfully places Barth's heological writings within key events of his life and the wider world, providing a broader context that illuminates his thought far more than the typical summaries. The portrait that emerges across the decades of Barth's career is one of an irascible thinker who seems to enjoy having controversial opinions. * Best Books of 2021, Todd Brewer, Mockingbird *[The book] reads smoothly but with the kind of clarity that is symptomatic of the best kind of academic work. In other words, the book is highly readable yet very much built on a reliable foundation... Tietz's work is diligent and insightful. I suspect her book will become the standard biography of Karl Barth for some time. For students of Barth's theology, it is indispensable. * Stephen D. Morrison *Christiane Tietz has done exemplary well in composing a thoroughly broad and yet deep investigation...We further believe this biography will be the standard biography on Barth for many years to come. * Bradley M. Penner, Reviews in Religion and Theology *Tietz's work will be another standard biographical treatment of Barth for years to come and is thus highly recommended. * Ximian Xu, Journal of Reformed Theology *This book is a stunning achievement. That a biography of a theologian is so engrossing speaks not only to the kind of life that Barth led, but also to the skill and patience of the biographer. * Declan Kelly, Rezension Kelly Journal of Ecclesiastical History *Victoria Barnett's splendidly fluid translation creates a strong sense of engagement with the narrative from beginning to end. * Donald K. McKim, Church History *The book takes an honourable place in introductory works on Barth. * Tim Gorringe, Modern Believing *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations List of Abbreviations 1: "I Belong to Basel": Ancestors and Childhood, 1886-1904 2: "This Obscure Desire toward a Better Understanding": Studies, 1904-9 3: "Stumbling up the Steps to Calvin's Pulpit": Geneva, 1909-11 4: "The Red Pastor": Safenwil, 1911-21 5: "A Book for Those Who Were Also Concerned": The First Epistle to the Romans, 1919 6: "To Always Work Somewhat Faster": Göttingen, 1921-5 7: "Not a Stone Left Standing": The Second Epistle to the Romans, 1922 8: "The Need for Thinking Further": Münster, 1925-30 9: A Troubled "Ménage à Trois": Charlotte von Kirschbaum 10: "A Swissman in the Middle of Germany": Bonn, 1930-5 11: "We Who Can Still Speak": Basel, 1935-45 12: "In Political Respects a Dubious Will-o'-the-Wisp": Basel, 1945-62 13: "The White Whale": Church Dogmatics 14: "All Things Considered, a Little Tired": The Final Years, Basel, 1962-8 Epilogue Chronology Bibliography Index

404 Ink All the Violet Tiaras: Queering the Greek Myths
Book SynopsisFor a period in time that gave us Sappho and the love affair of Achilles and Patroclus, the Ancient Greek relationship with queer folk is more complicated that at first glance. Tales as old as antiquity persevere, whether the goddess of love Aphrodite, Tiresias, the prophet who spent time as both man and woman, or the infamous Heracles. But, what can these ancient stories offer our contemporary world? Historian Jean Menzies dives into the world of queer retellings and the Greek myths being told anew by LGBTQ+ writers. From explorations of gender and identity across millennia, to celebrating queer love in its many forms, All the Violet Tiaras invites readers to discover the power to be found in remaking these myths, time and again, carving a space for queer stories to be told with all the complexity and tenderness they deserve, with a goddess or two for good measure.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd 'Charms', Liturgies, and Secret Rites in Early
Book SynopsisA re-evaluation of the mysterious "charms" found in Anglo-Saxon literature, arguing for their place in mainstream Christian rites. Since its inception in the nineteenth century, the genre of Anglo-Saxon charms has drawn the attention of many scholars and appealed to enthusiasts of magic, paganism, and popular religion. Their Christian nature has been widely acknowledged in recent years, but their position within mainstream liturgical traditions has not yet been fully recognised. In this book, Ciaran Arthur undertakes a wide-ranging investigation of the genre to better understand how early English ecclesiastics perceived these rituals and why they included them in manuscripts were written in high-status minsters. Evidence from the entire corpus of Old English, various surviving manuscript sources, and rich Christian theological traditions suggests that contemporary scribes and compilers did not perceive "charms" as anything other than Christian rituals that belonged to diverse, mainstream liturgical practices. The book thus challenges the notion that there was any such thing as an Anglo-Saxon "charm", and offers alternative interpretations of these texts as creative para-liturgical rituals or liturgical rites, which testify to the diversity of early medieval English Christianity. When considered in their contemporary ecclesiastical and philosophical contexts, even the most enigmatic rituals, previously dismissed as mere "gibberish", begin to emerge as secret, deliberately obscured texts with hidden spiritual meaning.Trade ReviewThe book represents a major advance to our knowledge about Anglo-Saxon ritual practice, for Arthur's study permits us now to take charms and secret writing seriously as much for their theological and devotional depth as for their popular significance. Rare is the event - and to be celebrated - when one comes across a book that opens up an entire genre for new appreciation -- EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPECiaran Arthur's overview of this fascinating corpus of literature, with each example scrutinized in its manuscript context and set against the background of a learned Latinate tradition, contributes much to our understanding of the relations between magic and liturgy in late Anglo-Saxon England. * SPECULUM *Scholars and students of Anglo-Saxon England will find this book an invaluable re-assessment of many of the Anglo-Saxon texts that have been labelled `charms', and it will also interest scholars concerned with folklore more generally. * ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW *Provocative and erudite [its] arguments are consistently stimulating, discerning, and persuasive. This book makes a major contribution to knowledge, as it sheds an enormous amount of light on the least well-understood corpus of writings from Anglo-Saxon England. * ANGLIA *[F]or researchers focusing on the belief systems of early medieval England, or of early medieval Europe more broadly, this must be very strongly recommended. Any university library with a collection on medieval religion needs to obtain a copy. * READING RELIGION *Table of ContentsIntroduction Kill or Cure: Anglo-Saxon Understandings of Galdor By the Power Vested in Me: Galdor in Authorised Rituals Ite Missa Est: The Liturgical Nature of 'Charms' Crops and Robbers: A Case Study of the Vitellius Psalter In the Beginning Was the Letter: The Cosmological Power of 'Gibberish' Conclusion Bibliography

Simon & Schuster At Heaven's Door: What Shared Journeys to the
Book SynopsisA “brilliant and fascinating” (Eben Alexander, MD, author of Proof of Heaven) exploration—rich with powerful personal stories and convincing research—of the many ways the living can and do accompany the dying on their journey into the afterlife. In 2000, end-of-life therapist William Peters was volunteering at the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco when he had an extraordinary experience as he was reading aloud to a patient: he suddenly felt himself floating midair, completely out of his body. The patient, who was also aloft, looked at him and smiled. The next moment, Peters felt himself return to his body…but his patient never regained consciousness and died. Perplexed and stunned by what had happened, Peters began searching for other people who’d shared similar experiences. He would spend the next twenty years gathering and meticulously categorizing their stories to identify key patterns and features of what is now known as the “shared crossing” experience. The similarities, which cut across continents and cultures and include awe-inspiring visual and sensory effects, and powerful emotional aftershocks. The book is filled with “moving and tender” (Jack Kornfield, PhD, author of A Path with Heart) tales of spouses seeing their loved ones reach the other side after decades together and bereaved parents who share their children’s entry into the afterlife. Applying rigorous research, Peters digs into the effects of these shared crossing experiences impart—liberation at the sight of a loved one finding joy, a sense of reconciliation if the relationship was fraught—and explores questions like: What can explain these shared death experiences? How can we increase our likelihood of having one? What do these experiences tell us about what lies beyond? And, most importantly, how can they help take away the string of death and better prepare us for our own final moments? How can we have both a better life and a better death?Trade Review“This brilliant and fascinating research about shared death experiences removes the conventional myth of death’s finality and shows how love binds us together beyond the material realm. Highly recommended!” — Eben Alexander, MD, Neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling author of Proof of Heaven, The Map of Heaven, and Living in a Mindful Universe "A 'must read' for anyone who will die. Read to find the gifts of comfort, peace, and especially the reduction of fear. This book will change your view of dying in a profoundly positive way." — Maggie Callanan, bestselling author of Final Gifts “At Heaven's Door offers moving and tender accounts, real and important, soothing and surprisingly common, that validate and affirm the great mystery that who we are is consciousness. We are spirit beyond our body.” — Jack Kornfield, PhD, author of A Path With Heart "Peters has built upon my foundational research into shared-death phenomena with this very well-researched and thoughtful look at the transpersonal effects of dying on family, friends, and even healthcare providers. I strongly recommend At Heaven’s Door for those who want a well-researched look into what exists beyond the threshold." — Dr. Raymond Moody, bestselling author of Life After Life and Glimpses of Eternity "A growing body of evidence indicates that the death of the physical body is not the end of human consciousness. In At Heaven's Door, William J. Peters makes a vital addition to this all-important conclusion: our existence does not end with bodily death." — Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters "This study based on over 800 cases is a hugely valuable contribution to our understanding not only of death and dying, but of what makes life worthwhile... A truly inspiring read." — The Scientific & Medical Network

Equinox Publishing Ltd A History of Biblical Israel: The Fate of the
Book SynopsisThere was probably only one past, but there are many different histories. As mental representations of narrow segments of the past, 'histories' reflect different cultural contexts and different historians, although 'history' is a scientific enterprise whenever it processes representative data using rational and controllable methods to work out hypotheses that can be falsified by empirical evidence. A History of Biblical Israel combines experience gained through decades of teaching biblical exegesis and courses on the history of ancient Israel, and of on-going involvement in biblical archaeology. 'Biblical Israel' is understood as a narrative produced primarily in the province of Yehud to forge the collective memory of the elite that operated the temple of Jerusalem under the auspices of the Achaemenid imperial apparatus. The notion of 'Biblical Israel' provides the necessary hindsight to narrate the fate of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah as the pre-history of 'Biblical Israel', since the archives of these kingdoms were only mined in the Persian era to produce the grand biblical narrative. The volume covers the history of 'Biblical Israel' through its fragmentation in the Hellenistic and Roman periods until 136 CE, when four Roman legions crushed the revolt of Simeon Bar-Kosiba.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction Part I: The Pre-History of Biblical Israel 1. It tells the epic story of angels, from Creation, to Evolution through to the operations of the supernatural in the modern world. This tale of how people and peoples have been helped by angels and other angelic beings is woven into a spellbinding narrative that brings together Krishna, Moses, Buddha, Elijah, Mary and Jesus, Mohammed, Joan of Arc, the angels who helped Hungarian Jews persecuted by the Nazis, and stories from African, Native American and Celtic traditions. Christian Focus Publications Ltd 2,000 Years of Christ’s Power Vol. 4: The Age of
Book SynopsisThe Renaissance and Reformation were exciting times of learning and discovery – they pushed the boundaries of accepted thought. The repercussions of this, however, were that they left in their wake a period of universal uncertainty. The centuries–old status quo had been turned on its head. Nothing was stable anymore. Conflict ensued. The fourth volume of 2,000 Years of Christ’s Power spans from the 16th to the 18th century. It presents a time from which English Protestantism, Scottish Presbyterianism, and French Catholicism, to name only a few, were birthed and refined. Perhaps few eras have had such a direct impact on the characteristics of our own period of history.Trade ReviewWhat makes the books so useful is that in a non-technical (but not simplistic) way, they bring out the main story line of the history of the church through the centuries. But in addition, and most helpfully, each chapter concludes with a selection of writings (translated of course!) from people discussed in the chapter. This means that we are not only told what certain people believed, but we are able to read some of their actual writings -- and this is often extremely illuminating. -- Martin K. Bussey (Lecturer in theology, Africa International University, Kenya)For many years now I have said: if you want a thorough, learned but accessible and well-written history of the church, read Nick Needham's 2,000 Years of Christ's Power. Now, with the fourth volume finally available, Christians have an excellent resource for improving their knowledge of the history of their faith. Highly recommended. -- Carl R. Trueman (Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania)Nick Needham's volumes on church history explain everything that someone new to the subject might not understand. At the same time, they achieve a depth of detail to interest those who already know something of the subject. We use them as standard texts at LTS and look forward eagerly to forthcoming volumes. -- Robert Strivens (Pastor, Bradford–on–Avon Baptist Church, Wiltshire, UK & former Principal, London Seminary)It is a brave historian who tackles the extremely challenging task of writing the 2,000-year history of the Church. Well, Nick Needham has more than risen to the challenge. This eagerly-awaited fourth volume has been well worth the wait and, not to pressure our brother scholar, we now look forward to the concluding volume! -- Michael A. G. This title opens up Dr. Beeke’s expertise and learning for anyone ‘trapped in a background of easy believism or trapped in the opposite fear of assurance being the certain mark of being presumptuous and so crushing the young shoots of hope and assurance as they appear.’Trade ReviewHere is a book that every person should read, whether they are a believer or an unbeliever. Joel Beeke has once again done a masterful job of presenting a thorough biblical case on this important subject. -- Steven J. Lawson (President, OnePassion Ministries and Professor of Preaching,The Master’s Seminary, Sun Valley, California)Here in this book, with perspicuity and simplicity, and informed by a lifetime of reflection and study of this subject, Dr Beeke lays out the New Testament witness that so thrilled the hearts of the Reformers and our Evangelical forebears. I highly recommend it. -- Michael A. G. Haykin (Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)Here is a book that will bring comforting peace, thrilling joy, and a defiant hope to the heart of any child of God battered by waves of unbelief in the high seas of life. Read it and be blessed! -- Conrad Mbewe (Pastor, Kabwata Baptist Church, Kabwata, Zambia; Founding Chancellor, African Christian University, Lusaka, Zambia)I'm delighted to see this book make Dr. Beeke's expertise more widely accessible, and hope that many more will now benefit from it as I did. To be fruitful, healthy and happy in Christ, Christians need to know the truths laid out for us here. -- Michael Reeves (President and Professor of Theology, Union School of Theology, Bridgend, Wales)As one who has personally benefitted from Dr. Beeke's teaching on assurance over the years, I'm delighted that the mature fruit of his thinking, writing, and speaking about this vital topic is now being made more available and accessible in this simple guide to such a profound and practical subject. May many discover through these pages, "I am His, and He is mine." -- David Murray (Senior Pastor, First Byron CRC, Byron Center, Michigan and author of ‘The StoryChanger’ and ‘Jesus on Every Page’)

Book SynopsisThe tenets of Islam cannot be grasped without a proper understanding of the Qur'an. In this important new introduction, Muhammad Haleem examines its recurrent themes - life and eternity, marriage and divorce, peace and war, water and nourishment - and for the first time sets these in the context of the Qur'an's linguistic style. Professor Haleem examines the background to the development of the surahs (chapters) and the ayahs (verses) and the construction of the Qur'an itself. He shows that popular conceptions of Islamic attitudes to women, marriage and divorce, war and society, differ radically from the true teachings of the Qur'an.Trade Review'Has a breadth of reading and attention to style that readers will welcome ... Send The Light The Tortoise Usually Wins: Biblical Reflections
Book SynopsisThe Tortoise Usually Wins is a delightful exploration of the theory of quiet leadership. Written for reluctant leaders, it interacts with three key biblical images of leadership - the leader as servant, shepherd and steward - and links them with some of the key virtues of quiet leadership - modesty, restraint, tenacity, interdependence and other-centeredness. Exploding the myth that the good is the enemy of the best, it argues that the reverse is more often true, with images of unattainable perfection crippling competent people from getting on with the task of doing genuinely good things. The book strips leadership of some of its mystique, arguing that the bulk of leadership is about helping groups decide the right things to do and then getting on and doing them in an atmosphere that brings the best out of others. Brian Harris is the principal of a highly regarded theological seminary and also pastors a thriving local church, so the book carries the wisdom of both professor and pastor, satisfying the reader both intellectually and practically. These insights are supplemented by interviews with significant quiet leaders from around the world, ensuring a rich feast for prospective and current reluctant leaders. 'Books on leadership are today two a penny. Just occasionally, however, one of these books might stand head and shoulders above most of the others, and to my delight The Tortoise Usually Wins falls into that category. Furthermore, so many books on leadership are written for natural leaders; whereas, as the author makes clear, most churches are led by "quiet leaders" who know they are not great, but nonetheless, are "tenacious and committed to the task and willing to work co-operatively with others to achieve it". I can see many church leaders benefitting from this book. I warmly commend this unusual book.' Paul Beasley-Murray, Senior Minister, Central Baptist Church, Chelmsford; Chair of Ministry Today UK

Baker Publishing Group The Road Away from God – How Love Finds Us Even
Book SynopsisIt's no easy journey disentangling the good news of the gospel from the toxic theologies that have rendered Jesus unrecognizable. It's no wonder the church has sent many walking. In The Road Away from God, Jonathan Martin reimagines Luke's story of two disillusioned disciples walking the Emmaus road away from the holy city where they had watched their hope die a gruesome death right before their eyes. For anyone who is feeling their faith unravel, reckoning with religious trauma, or walking the long road of deconstruction, Martin speaks compassionate hope into the journey of today's disillusioned disciples, revealing that the resurrected Christ is profoundly present with them--even on what seems to be the road away from God. With "a pastor's heart and poet's touch," as Rachel Held Evans once wrote of Martin, this is a book to help you feel seen in your spiritual journey and all its complexities, and to find resurrection even where you least expect it.

Baker Publishing Group The Home of God – A Brief Story of Everything
Book SynopsisWe live in the midst of a crisis of home. It is evident in the massive uprooting and migration of millions across the globe, in the anxious nationalism awaiting immigrants in their destinations, in the unhoused populations in wealthy cities, in the fractured households of families, and in the worldwide destruction of habitats and international struggles for dominance. It is evident, perhaps more quietly but just as truly, in the aching sense that there is nowhere we truly belong. In this moment, the Christian faith has been disappointingly inept in its response. We need a better witness to the God who created, loves, and reconciles this world, who comes to dwell among us. This book tells the "story of everything" in which God creates the world as the home for humans and for God in communion with God's creatures. The authors render the story of creation, redemption, and consummation through the lens of God's homemaking work and show the theological fruit of telling the story this way. The result is a vision that can inspire creative Christian living in our various homes today in faithfulness to God's ongoing work.Table of ContentsContentsPrelude: The Arrows of Our LongingOverture: A Story of HomePart 1: Exodus1. Faithlife Corporation Tolkien Dogmatics
Book SynopsisTheology through mythology J. R. R. Tolkien was many things: English Catholic, father and husband, survivor of two world wars, Oxford professor, and author. But he was also a theologian. Tolkien's writings exhibit a coherent theology of God and his works, but Tolkien did not present his views with systematic arguments. Rather, he expressed theology through story. In Tolkien Dogmatics, Austin M. Freeman inspects Tolkien's entire corpus--The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and beyond--as a window into his theology. In his stories, lectures, and letters, Tolkien creatively and carefully engaged with his Christian faith. Tolkien Dogmatics is a comprehensive manual of Tolkien's theological thought arranged in traditional systematic theology categories, with sections on God, revelation, creation, evil, Christ and salvation, the church, and last things. Through Tolkien's imagination, we reencounter our faith.

Temple Lodge Publishing Transforming People and Organizations: The Seven
Book SynopsisIndividuals, groups and organizations find themselves in a process of continual change, transformation and growth. Margarete van den Brink suggests all people, whether individually or in groups, experience the same archetypal process of development, consisting of seven steps. Giving practical examples, she describes how these steps or phases can be recognized in individuals, in relationships and groups, and even in commercial and voluntary organizations. A knowledge of the various steps allows for clarity and vision, helping to prepare for the sorts of challenges and rewards we might face. In addition to the external aspect of these processes there is the internal aspect. The author indicates that the process of growth through the seven phases is, in essence, a process of spiritual development. Spirit manifests itself in the human being and determines the meaning and direction of our lives, giving impulses for change and direction. These impulses are also at work in groups and organizations, and knowledge of them allows for greater insight. Van den Brink's approach offers a refreshingly new and dynamic way forward in contrast to the 'rationalist' methodologies of much of mainstream consultancy and personal development.

Book SynopsisFrom the Bestselling Author of Seth SpeaksSpeaking exclusively through Jane Roberts, Seth has repeatedly stressed the concept that we create our own reality according to our individual beliefs. But how do our realities merge and combine to form mass reactions such as the overthrow of governments, the birth of a new religion, wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and new periods of art, architecture, and technology? In this pioneering work, Seth explores the connection between personal beliefs and world events. He pinpoints the unconscious ? and often negative ? beliefs pervading science and religion, medicine and mythology, and offers thought-provoking reflections on Darwinism, Freudianism, religions, cults, and medical beliefs. With fascinating and inspiring implications, Seth asserts that the personal impulses we are often taught to see as dangerous, chaotic, or contradictory, are instead crucial to the best interests of the species and the natural world, for they lead us to live ?not only as loving caretakers but as partners with other species.??Only people who trust their spontaneous impulses can be consciously wise enough to choose from a myriad of probable futures the most promising events….? ? Zondervan The Quran with Christian Commentary
Book SynopsisThe Quran with Christian Commentary includes the full text of the Quran along with notes and articles that explain its contents and analyze its important themes.Trade Review'Dr. Gordon Nickel displays an encyclopedic intimacy with the Quran and the tradition of classical commentary that ambushes its margins. He brings a committed Christian perspective without compromising high standards of detached scholarly engagement. At times combative, always clear and eloquent, and never evasive, this learned commentary on the entire Islamic scripture will both provoke and inform thoughtful Muslim and Christian readers alike. Believers eager to probe and question but not too ready with stereotypical answers shall find in it a treasure of insights. Dr. Nickel notes and assesses the Quran's high 'Quranology,' that is, its many self- referential verses about its uniquely miraculous status. He ultimately rejects the book's claims and finds its assessment of its two rival faiths exaggerated and unwarranted. He emphasizes that the Quran, despite appearances, endorses the scriptural and textual integrity of its two revealed biblical predecessors. However, he concludes that despite its confident claims to the contrary, the Quran fails to be an adequate sequel to the Bible. Dr. Nickel has placed both Muslim and Christian scholars in his debt with this remarkable work of Christian advocacy, offered in the spirit of Christian humility and courtesy. This is a major contribution to critical quranic scholarship, a discipline not found among the traditional sciences of the Quran approved by Islamic orthodoxy.' * SHABBIR AKHTAR, faculty of theology, University of Oxford, author of The New Testament in Muslim Eyes *'Gordon D. Nickel's Christian commentary on the Quran fills a gap in the Christian book market, allowing non-Arabic speakers to get deep insight into the contents and theology of the Quran. All 114 surahs of the Quran are translated and commented on with a focus on quranic statements about Christianity. This much-desired work is the fruit of a life-long study of Islam and interaction with Muslim friends--a must-have for all who aim at obtaining a deeper understanding of Islam and engaging with Muslims.' * CHRISTINE SCHIRRMACHER, professor of Islamic studies and Middle Eastern languages, Department of Oriental and Asian Studies, Universität Bonn *'In this commentary on the scripture of Islam, Gordon Nickel has performed a great service for Christians who wish to know about Islam. The Quran presents distinctive accounts of stories familiar from the Bible and directly denies fundamental Christian doctrines. Nickel's unfailingly respectful yet unmistakably Christian responses present the similarities and differences between the quranic and biblical traditions with unflinching directness. He has produced a reliable and accessible resource for both students studying the Quran and general readers.' * DAVID THOMAS, FBA, emeritus professor of Christianity and Islam, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom *'In this landmark study, Dr. Nickel carefully explains the meaning of the text of the Quran for non-Muslim readers. Dr. Nickel is a highly respected authority on the Quran, and his knowledge of its content, historical context, and the history of its interpretation by Muslim commentators is astounding. He writes with a gracious respect for the Quran and for Muslims, but he also raises important questions for thoughtful readers to consider. This is a treasure trove of information and insight, and it will undoubtedly become the standard work on the subject for years to come.' * HAROLD NETLAND, professor of philosophy of religion and intercultural studies, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School *'Nickel reads the Quran primarily as a rhetorical text engaged in polemics, mostly against Jews and Christians. His reading is done largely through the lens of--and to some extent in response to--classical Muslim exegesis, though he does not often refer to the classical occasions of the revelation as the Quran's exclusive historical setting. This, in my view, is very commendable, for it allows him to adopt a fresh reading of the text. He does, nevertheless, often assume this classical rhetorical reading, and in this sense his commentary is often a response to classical interpretation. Nickel's reading resists the temptation of being driven by a polemical agenda, and indeed he allows himself to be positively surprised by the Quran's primary meaning, even when he shows awareness of more classical polemical readings. By doing so, Nickel reflects a desire to discern in the Quran a more positive and apologetic stance towards earlier scriptures and their recipients, removing himself from a negative polemic. By doing so, he is, in my view, imminently fair to the text. The occasional articles on specific issues, interspersed throughout his commentary, such as on the tampering with the scriptures, jihad, apocryphal references in the Quran, the death of Jesus, manuscripts of the Quran, or the Quran's language of love, are useful to varying degrees. Some contain a more polemical edge than others, reflecting more or less faithfulness to the spirit of the Quran. Overall, Nickel's Christian commentary on the Quran is a very helpful work that offers the contemporary English reader a useful entry into a text that can otherwise appear as rather opaque to the uninitiated.' * MARTIN ACCAD, associate professor of Islamic studies, Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in Lebanon and Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California *'One can hardly think of a more important book for Christians to appear this year. This translation of the Quran contains commentary by Gordon Nickel, a foremost scholar of Islam who lived among Muslims for many years. The commentary is immensely informed, fair, and accessible. Every class on Islam ought to use this text.' * GERALD R. MCDERMOTT, Anglican chair of divinity, director of the Institute of Anglican Studies, Beeson Divinity School *'The text of the Quran is reproduced here in the excellent translation of Droge and supplemented by a substantial introduction, many explanatory notes, and several focus articles that shed light on various key themes of the Quran. Gordon Nickel has done very fine work in providing the Christian reader precious keys for approaching the quranic text and interreligious dialogue with Muslims.' * GUILLAUME DYE, professor in Islamic studies, Université libre de Bruxelles *'This admirably comprehensive commentary explains the contents of the Quran to non-Muslim readers. In analyzing and interpreting key verses and passages that address the 'People of the Book,' namely Christians and Jews, Gordon Nickel, along with his team of top-ranking scholars, brilliantly opens up the varied historical contexts, meanings, and implications of the Quran to a wider readership. Muslims and non-Muslims alike will benefit immensely from the erudition and exegesis that this commentary manifests, resulting in a more accurate understanding of how Islam fundamentally stands apart from the other Abrahamic faiths.' * GRANT HAVERS, chair, Department of Philosophy, Trinity Western University *Table of Contents114 surahs (chapters) in the Quran 6,236 ayat (verses) The Quran with Christian Commentary will include either a public domain English translation of the Quran or, if we can obtain rights, the translation that HarperOne commissioned for its Study Quran. The Islamic Texts Society Al-Ghazali on Love, Longing, Intimacy &
Book SynopsisThe Book of Love, Longing, Intimacy and Contentment is the thirty-sixth chapter of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali''s Revival of the Religious Sciences. This was the first treatise which established not merely the possibility but the necessity for the love of God. Ghazali argues that all the virtues and spiritual stages that precede love, like repentance, patience and thankfulness, lead to love; and all the spiritual stages that follow on from love are a result of it. Out of Ghazali''s pioneering treatment would emerge not only new trends in Sufi theory and practice, but an entire body of mystical poetry including that of the great Persian poets Rumi and Hafiz. The translation is preceded by an extensive introduction which sets the work in its historical and spiritual context.

Muddy Pearl Those Who Show Up
Book SynopsisThis book won't try to get you to vote for a particular party. It isn't going to try to get you to vote at all. Something far better. It's going to show you that you could be voted for. That it could be your name on the ballot paper. Or that you could be working with someone whose name is, influencing your community more than you ever imagined. From food banks to debt counselling, soup vans to street pastors, the church is doing an amazing job treating the victims of a flawed system. But it's never going to be enough. Unless we also get involved in the decision-making process. God cares deeply about the heart of our state, as well as the state of our hearts. And, as Bart Simpson once famously discovered, the vote is won - and history is made, and the kingdom advanced - by those who show up.
