Springer Nature Switzerland AG Racial and Religious Hate Crime: The UK From 1945
Book SynopsisThis book focuses on two key aspects of hate crime in the UK since 1945: those motivated by racial and religious prejudices. It examines factors that have underpinned the emergence and occurrence of racial and religious hate crime and the approaches and policies that have been pursued by the state, especially the criminal justice system, to combat this problem. Crucially, it also provides insight into the challenges that are faced in the contemporary period (especially in the wake of the 2016 EU referendum) in combatting hate crime. Additionally the book briefly considers the importance of the rhetoric of the Trump campaign and the administration's early policies to the contemporary manifestations of racial and religious hate crime.Table of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1 Racism and hate crime Chapter 2 Immigration control and racially motivated hatred 1900 - to the early 1960s Chapter 3 Racially motivated discrimination, extremist rhetoric and immigration control 1960 - to the early 1980s Chapter 4 Policing, social disorder and responding to racially motivated offending in the 1980s and 1990s Chapter 5 Legislating against racially aggravated offending: from the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 to the Macpherson Report Chapter 6 Islamophobia and the social cohesion agenda Chapter 7 Contemporary political extremism Chapter 8 The Response to Hate Crime: From 2010 – Brexit Chapter 9 Conclusion: Hate crime - Brexit and beyond. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Religious Rhetoric in US Right-Wing Politics:
Book SynopsisThis book seeks to understand white conservative Christians’ support for Donald Trump, using their own words. Drawing on the triangular relationship between the 45th president, and his voters, and religious organizations, this work investigates the creation of the tale of Trump as the protector and enhancer of Christian values. The first part of the book discusses in detail the white conservative Christian constituency in the United States, and the development of feelings of displacement and resentment fostered by intergroup threat and nationalism. The central part focuses on the actor known as the “Religious Right,” through the rhetoric of one of their most representative organizations in the twenty-first century. The final part focuses on the character of Donald Trump and his peculiar relationship with religious discourse. The book demonstrates that while such discourse is expected of Trump as a Republican candidate, his approach to it is characterized by detachment and sloganized exploitation of Christian symbols. Ultimately, the book highlights the cultural tools that are crucial in the reproduction of structures of inequality and the ways they have been used by conservative politicians and groups to accumulate power.Table of ContentsChapter 1: The Outsider and the White HouseChapter 2: “What happened?”Chapter 3: Whiteness, Christianity, and PoliticsChapter 4: A Threatened StatusChapter 5: Fighting for the Soul of the NationChapter 6: A Rhetorical WeaponChapter 7: Trump Won. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Religion and Conflict in Northern Ireland: What Does Religion Do?
Book SynopsisNorthern Ireland presents a fundamental challenge for the sociology of religion – how do religious beliefs, attitudes and identities relate to practices, violence and conflict? In other words, what does religion do?These interrogations are at the core of this book. It is the first critical and comprehensive review of the ways in which the social sciences have interpreted religion’s significance in Northern Ireland. In particular, it examines the shortcomings of existing interpretations and, in turn, suggests alternative lines of thinking for more robust and compelling analyses of the role(s) religion might play in Northern Irish culture and politics.Through, and beyond, the case of Northern Ireland, the second objective of this book is to outline a critical agenda for the social study of religion, which has theoretical and methodological underpinnings. Finally, this work engages with epistemological issues which never have been addressed as such in the Northern Irish context: how do conflict settings affect the research undertaken on religion, when religion is an object of political and violent contentions? By analysing the scope for objective and critical thinking in such research context, this critical essay intends to contribute to a sociology of the sociology of religion.Table of ContentsIntroduction_ Chapter 1.- Context_ Chapter 2.- Religion, the Great Un-equaliser_ Chapter 3.- Back to the Social_ Chapter 4.- Epistemology in the context of social conflict_ Conclusion.

De Gruyter Religious Communities and Civil Society in
Book SynopsisThe seemingly vitalizing impact of religiosity on civil society is a research topic that has been extensively looked into, not only in the USA, but increasingly also in a European context. What is missing is an evaluation of the role of institutionalized religious communities, and of circumstances that facilitate or impede their status as civil society organisations. This anthology in two volumes aims at closing this gap by providing case studies regarding political, legal and historical aspects in various European countries. Vol. I provides an introduction and looks at cases in Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as chapters on legal issues and data, and comprehensive bibliography.

De Gruyter The Power of Religion / Religion and Power: Third Annual Conference 2020
Book SynopsisHow does the powerful effect that religion has on public and personal life relate to the various spheres of our culture? Is the relationship between power and religion always negative or can religion also affect individuals and societies positively? This volume of the EuARe Lectures, edited by Herman Selderhuis, collects the texts of the lectures delivered at the Third Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion (2020) on the topic “The Power of Religion / Religion and Power”. Scott Appleby explores the connection, in the religious imagination, among glorifying the divine, sanctifying the mundane and exercising political and cultural power. Cyril Hovorun addresses the issue of the politicization of religion, focusing in particular on Eastern Christian cases. Susanne Schröter offers an insight into the current debate on Islam in Germany. Finally, Kristina Stoeckl analyses the complex relationship among Europe’s new religious conflicts, Russian orthodoxy, American Christian conservatives and the emergence of a European populist right-wing.

Springer International Publishing AG The Politics of Islamism: Diverging Visions and Trajectories
Book SynopsisThis book offers a nuanced and muti-layered approach towards comprehending the possibilities of democratization or likelihood of authoritarian resilience in the Muslim world. The volume highlights the complex diversity within Islamist movements and parties— characterised by internal tensions, struggles and contestations. The very existence of this diversity within and among Islamist movements, and their general willingness to partake in mainstream politics, signals an important transformation in the Muslim world over recent decades. It demonstrates that the Muslim world has gravitated from the simplistic focus on the compatibility or incompatibility of Islam and democracy. Islamist movements and parties embody the multiple manifestations and trajectories within political Islam. The granular case-studies and theological analyses in this volume draw attention to the policy refinements, socio-political reforms and ideological transformations engendered by Muslim intellectuals and Islamist movements and ideologues. The diverse political landscape in the Muslim world is inextricably linked to the socio-political and theological shifts within Islamism—in particular, the yearning for greater social, economic and political justice, a yearning that lies at the core of an inclusive wasatiyyah Islam.Table of Contents1. Brill Religion, Religiosity, and Democratic Values: A Comparative Perspective of Islamic and Non-Islamic Societies
Book SynopsisDoes religiosity diminish democratic economic and civil tendencies? Do Islamic traditions provoke more hostility to democratic values in comparison to other religious traditions? In Religion, Religiosity, and Democratic Values, Abbas Mehregan undertakes an empirical examination of the effects of individual religiosity, historical religion, institutional democracy, and socioeconomic development on attitudes towards free market economics and confidence in traditional, modern, and post-modern civil society organizations. Using multilevel analysis, Mehregan compares 60 Islamic, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, and folk-religion societies in these regards. Furthermore, in addition to an empirical comparison of Sunni and Shia Islamic countries, a theoretical investigation of the relationship between Islam and democratic economic and civil values provides a comprehensive insight into the topic.Trade Review"The book contains many other remarkable findings that make its reading worthwhile to academics, researchers, students, socio-economic and political commentators, as well as the non-academic public, who are interested in the relationship between religion, and Islam in particular, and democratic values." Brill Taoism and Self Knowledge: The Chart for the Cultivation of Perfection (Xiuzhen tu)
Book SynopsisCatherine Despeux’s book Taoism and Self Knowledge is a study of the Internal Alchemical text "Chart for the Cultivation of Perfection." It begins with an analysis of pictographic and symbolic representation of the body in early Taoism after which the author examines different extant versions of the "Chart" as it was transmitted among Quanzhen groups in the Qing dynasty. The book is comprised of four main parts: the principal parts of the body and their nomenclature in Internal Alchemy, the spirits in the human body, and the alchemical processes and procedures used in thunder rituals and self-cultivation. "The volume at hand—a good translation of an expanded version of the French title published in 2012—directly opens the gate to an impressive image of the religion that thoroughly explains its fundamental and timeless impact on Chinese life and thought. Brill A Companion to Julian the Apostate
Book SynopsisFew Roman emperors enjoy such fame as Flavius Claudius Iulianus – although he was sole ruler of the Roman Empire for only eighteen months (361-363). Since his early death he has been known as Julian the Apostate – the nephew of Constantine the Great who in vain tried to reverse the transformation of the Imperium Romanum into a Christian Empire. This companion synthesizes research on Julian conducted in many languages over the last decades and develops new perspectives. The authors scrutinize the voluminous and variegated sources for Julian's life and rule and reflect on the perceptions of modern research. Since Julian is the subject of scholarly discussion in various fields, this companion offers an interdisciplinary dialogue in which experts from many countries participate. Contributors are Bruno Bleckmann, Scott Bradbury, Peter Heather, Arnaldo Marcone, Neil McLynn, Heinz-Günther Nesselrath, Stefan Rebenich, Christoph Riedweg, Sebastian Schmidt-Hofner, Peter van Nuffelen, Konrad Vössing, Hans-Ulrich Wiemer.Trade Review"There is much to admire and be inspired by in the volume. [...] there are excellent discussions in the volume, and it is evident that debates about the interpretation of Julian and his actions will continue". Shaun Tougher, in The Byzantine Review, 2020. "The Companion to Julian the Apostate is to be commended for its range of coverage, which mirrors the diverse disciplinary interests in Julian.[...] The Companion thus fills a gap. To my knowledge there is no other single resource on Julian that can serve as a gateway into the many sub-specialties that examine his life, writings, and legacy.[...] The Companion to Julian the Apostate will be a useful tool for anyone wishing to survey any number of topics about Julian or to join the interpretive fray themselves". Brad Boswell, in Bryn Mawr Classical Review (February 2021). [...] "the volume is a success. The individual chapters are well written, nicely judged and provide very good introductions to the subjects that they discuss. The authors are very fair and restrained in their treatment of controversial issues and generally avoid inflicting their own pet theories on the reader.[...] The publication of this volume is extremely welcome because it serves as a very good introduction to the actions and writings of Julian as both Caesar and Augustus". David Woods, in The Classical Review . Brill The Transnationality of the Secular: Travelling Ideas and Shared Practices of Secularism in Decolonising South and Southeast Asia
Book SynopsisTo what extent was the evolution of secularism in South and Southeast Asia between the end of the First World War and decolonisation after 1945 a result of transimperial and transnational patterns? To capture the diversity of twentieth-century secularisms, Clemens Six explores similarities resulting from translocal networks of ideas and practices since 1918. Six approaches these networks via a framework of global intellectual history, the history of transnational social networks, and the global history of non-state institutions. Empirically, he illustrates his argument with three case studies: the reception of Atatürk’s reforms across Asia and the Middle East; translocal women’s circles in the interwar period; and private US foundations after 1945.Table of ContentsThe Transnationality of the Secular Travelling Ideas and Shared Practices of Secularism in Decolonizing South and Southeast Asia Clemens Six Abstract Keywords Introduction: The Possibility of Global Secularism Studies 1 Transnational Discourses on Secularism 2 Social Networks for a Secular State 3 Circuits of Expertise and Geopolitics 4 Conclusions Abbreviations References

Brill China in a Secular Age: Coping with the Legacy of a Religious State
Book SynopsisIs China truly a secular state? André Laliberté puts this widely held perception to the test, arguing that we must first broaden our definitions if we are to comprehend fully the religious nature of the Chinese state. From there, Laliberté presents the long tradition of Chinese statecraft, which has involved different forms of intermingling between religion and state, and describes how the Communist Party perpetuates this institutional intertwinement despite its materialist philosophy. He then explores the variety of forms in which societies with a Chinese heritage outside of the People’s Republic of China are moving beyond this mutual entanglement between religion and state.Table of ContentsChina in a Secular Age Coping with the Legacy of a Religious State André Laliberté Abstract Keywords 1 Multiple Approaches to Secularity in Chinese Societies 2 Chinese Religions and Political Rulers before 1949 3 The Chinese Communist Party and Religions 4 Chinese Religions and Communities outside the PRC since 1949 5 Concluding Remarks on Chinese Multiple Secularities Bibliography

The author argues that Sufi orders participate in the improvement and consolidation of democracy and secularism in Senegal. Often, in opposing or blocking the conservative ambitions of the state holders, several Sufi guides support the citizens and deepen democratic values in the country.

Brill The Politics of Religious Literacy: Education and Emotion in a Secular Age
Book SynopsisReligious Literacy has become a popular concept for navigating religious diversity in public life. Spanning classrooms to boardrooms, The Politics of Religious Literacy challenges commonly held understandings of religious literacy as an inclusive framework for engaging with religion in modern, multifaith democracies. As the first book to rethink religious literacy from the perspective of affect theory and secularism studies, this new approach calls for a constructive reconsideration focused on the often-overlooked feelings and practices that inform our questionably secular age. This study offers fresh insights into the changing dynamics of religion and secularism in the public sphere.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Defining the “Religious” in Religious Literacy From Secularization to the Secular Body Religious Literacy in Context Looking Ahead 1 The Rise of Religious Literacy 1 Values 2 Content Knowledge 3 Skills 4 Critical Responses 5 Conclusion 2 Public Sphere, Private Choice: Religious Literacy and Public Reason 1 Secularity 3 and Religious Voluntarism 2 Taking Religion Seriously 3 Inclusion in the Public Sphere 4 The Standard of Democratic Discourse 5 Conclusion 3 Religious Literacy and Its Limits: Liberalism, Affect, and Pedagogy 1 “In the Service of Democracy”: Secularity, Civics, and Liberal Education 2 “From Head to Heart”: Affect, Autonomy, and the Materialist Shift 3 “The Integrity of the Teacher”: Pedagogy, Neutrality, and Secular Subjectivity 4 Conclusion 4 Tolerance and Its Discontents: Managing Offense in Religious Literacy Discourse 1 “Allergic to Controversy”: Tolerance, Civility, and Religious Offence in Public Schools 2 “A Crisis of Civility”: Critical Reconsiderations of Tolerance and Civil Discourse 3 “Vigorous-Yet-Respectful Critique”: Religious Literacy’s Reframing of Tolerance Discourse 4 The Limits of the Law: Does Religious Literacy Step in Where the Law Ends? 5 “Respect Your Neighbor”: Agonistic Respect, Deep Equality, and the Self-Regulation Trap 6 Conclusion 5 The “Post-compliance” Moment: Religious Literacy in the Workplace 1 Ernst & Young (EY) – Coexist House 2 The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding 3 The “Post-compliance” Moment 4 Conclusion 6 “Labels Can Be a Barrier”: Religious Literacy and the Question of Category 1 “Religion is Not a Native Category”: Critical Religion and World Religions 2 Nonreligion as the New Frontier of Interreligious Dialogue and the Seeming Solution of Worldviews 3 Conclusion Conclusion: Reforming Religious Literacy In Search of the Secular Student Body Classroom Critiques Teaching the Secular Affective Pedagogies Liberal Habits Conclusion Bibliography Index
