  • The Arab and Jewish Questions

Columbia University Press The Arab and Jewish Questions

Book SynopsisThis book brings together leading scholars to consider how the “Jewish Question” and the “Arab Question” are entangled historically and in the present day. It offers critical analyses of Arab engagements with the question of Jewish rights alongside Zionist and non-Zionist Jewish considerations of Palestinian identity and political rights.Trade ReviewThese thoughtful essays help us to understand how the destruction of ways of life (and of life itself) by pan-Arabism and Zionism—each claiming to assist the rebirth of a victimized people—and how the self-definition of a “new Europe” after the Holocaust, by repressing the memory of its murderous colonial history, has helped to shape our menacing present. The Arab and Jewish Questions is essential reading for all who wish to think productively about a human future beyond the nation-state, the modern collectivity whose ability to generate hatred toward “enemies” is not unique but whose power to bring about catastrophe is. -- Talal Asad, author of Secular Translations: Nation-State, Modern Self, and Calculative ReasonDrawing on philosophy, politics, poetry, psychoanalysis, and history, and extending from North Africa and the Mediterranean to Europe and North America, this powerful book poses the Arab and Jewish questions as inextricable, intimate, and hybrid forces that shape our desires and our unimagined futures. -- Sherene Seikaly, author of Men of Capital: Scarcity and Economy in Mandate PalestineOriginal and thoughtfully articulated, this volume will become the first port of call to illuminate the relationship between the Jewish and Arab questions. A must-read for scholars of Palestine, Israel, Jewish and Palestinian studies, Zionism, and the modern European history of racism. -- Alon Confino, author of A World Without Jews: The Nazi Imagination from Persecution to GenocideBreaking through both disciplinary and political barriers, this bold volume takes the discussion of “Jews and Arabs” in new directions. Its unique group of contributors brings together history, politics, religion, and literature, challenging us to think differently about how and why Jews and Arabs have mattered for the West, for the Middle East, and most of all, for each other. An indispensable reference point for insights into the past and future of two intertwined issues, which jointly constitute one of the major questions of our times. -- Lital Levy, author of Poetic Trespass: Writing between Hebrew and Arabic in Israel/PalestineThe invention of Arab and Jewish 'questions' in Europe and their importation to late Ottoman societies ruptured mutually constitutive relationships that defined a distinctive civilizational pattern of coexistence. In interrogating the national(ist) identities that lie at the broken heart of todays' political imaginaries, this timely book points to a future beyond their separatist terms. -- A. Dirk Moses, author of The Problems of Genocide: Permanent Security and the Language of TransgressionReaching beyond the siloed debates that often mark studies of Jews and Arabs in European and Middle Eastern contexts, this path-breaking volume opens unexpected conversations across several fields and geographic sites from the nineteenth century to contemporary Israel/Palestine. With a commitment to understanding the consolidation and unraveling of contingent identities and collective national projects—as well as the intimate connections between disparate struggles for self-determination—the contributors to The Arab and Jewish Questions guide us with new ways of thinking through the history and political evolution of Zionism, the Palestinian question, and Jewish-Arab relations. -- Seth Anziska, author of Preventing Palestine: A Political History from Camp David to OsloSpecialists in Israel and Palestine studies in particular willfind rich material with which to grapple. * Arab Studies Quarterly *Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: Three Questions That Make One, by Bashir Bashir and Leila FarsakhPart I. • University of Utah Press,U.S. Navajo Tradition, Mormon Life: The Autobiography

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBorn in the early 1940s in northern Arizona’s high country desert, Jim Dandy began life imbued with the traditions of the Navajo people. Raised by his father and grandfather—both medicine men—and a grandmother steeped in Navajo practices, he embraced their teachings and followed in their footsteps. But attending the LDS Placement program in northern Utah changed his life’s course when he became a member of the Mormon Church. Following graduation from high school, Jim served an LDS mission among his people, obtained a bachelor’s degree, and entered the work force in southeastern Utah as a career counsellor, teacher, and community advocate who improved educational opportunities on the Navajo Reservation.Jim has led a life of service and teaching. He maintains the traditional philosophy with which he was raised and the Mormon beliefs that he learned and continues to follow; his life reflects the values inherent in these two different worlds. Readers interested in Navajo philosophy will find his blend of these two distinct views fascinating, while others will better understand the effects of the controversial placement program on the life of one individual. However, this is primarily the warm story of a man’s life among his people and his love for them and their culture.Trade Review“Jim Dandy is a story of a success in the Mormon Placement Program. He was knowledgeable in the Navajo traditional ceremonial ways and viewed them not as an obstacle but as a strength in his Mormon doctrinal studies. From time to time when he encountered problems, he would go back to traditional training for answers.”—Henry Walters, Emeritus Director of Hatathli Museum, Navajo elder, and Medicine Man "Though the book is essentially the story of one man, it's also an excellent dialogue about the transition of a deeply spiritual people into an oft-times unsettling world. It's written simply enough for those with a mild interest in Indian affairs to read, but its depth will attract scholars and history buffs as well."—Deseret News “Navajo Tradition, Mormon Life is a creative combination of personal narrative and scholarly work. [McPherson and Dandy] have created a landmark study for finding a common ground between Mormon and Navajo teachings.”—BYU Studies Quarterly “Jim Dandy has much to say that is of great importance…. I have learned so much from him, and will be forever grateful for having read his story."—Association for Mormon Letters “Jim Dandy is a fascinating person, not just a successful educator, community leader, and role model, but also someone with very interesting beliefs about many topics… [His is] the story of a contemporary Navajo who continues to bridge multiple worlds and successfully combine traditional Navajo, Mormon, and Anglo approaches to life while remaining actively involved even after retirement. “ –American Indian Culture

  • Religion and Secularities: Reconfiguring Islam in

Orient Blackswan Pvt Ltd Religion and Secularities: Reconfiguring Islam in

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThe resurgence of religion and its militant mixing with politics is now a ubiquitous feature of our times. Since 9/11, discussions on religion, particularly Islam, have been characterised by debates surrounding the rise of political Islam, war on terror and the ascent of religious politics globally. Islam, particularly, appears as the bearer of a frightening tradition, and stereotypes render it an anathema in the modern world. The notion of a unitary, timeless and unchanging religion has been reinforced not only by sections of academia and the media, but also through the Muslim communities interpretations and representations of their own religion. Religion and Secularities challenges these quotidian facts about Islam. It brings together a collection of essays focusing on the reconfiguration of Islam in the world''s largest democracy, India. Investigating the relationship between religion, civil society and the state, this volume explores the nation''s long history with Islam as well as the categorisation of Muslims as a minority community. Based on ethnographic studies conducted in different regions of the country from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal to Karnataka and Kerala this volume addresses the diverse issues of religious piety that include community activism and civic participation; disputes and debates around visitation to historic-religious sites; the changing contours of matrilineal practices in a Muslim community; and how Muslim women negotiate personal/Islamic law in a plural judicial landscape. The essays highlight the impossibility of understanding contemporary Islam outside the logic of modern, secular-liberal governance a standpoint that helps take the secularism debate forward. This volume will be valuable for students and scholars of sociology, social anthropology and religious studies.

  • A Buddhist Sensibility

Columbia University Press A Buddhist Sensibility

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFounded in 1676, Mindröling monastery became a key site for Buddhist education and a Tibetan civilizational center. Dominique Townsend investigates the ritual, artistic, and cultural practices inculcated at Mindröling to demonstrate how early modern Tibetans integrated Buddhist and worldly activities through training in aesthetics.Trade ReviewThis book focuses upon a remarkable monastic institution in the early modern period and shows how it shaped the cosmopolitanism of the Tibetan capital and its aristocracy. Townsend provides fascinating case studies of letter-writing, monastic curricula, and belles-lettres, developing a special understanding of literature and aesthetics as ethically significant and religiously coded. The book serves to adjust our understanding of just what the category of “Buddhism,” or even “Buddhist institution”—or even “monastery”—could and should denote, and troubles forever more any strict boundary between religion and secular life in Tibetan Buddhist society. -- Janet Gyatso, author of Being Human in a Buddhist World: An Intellectual History of Medicine in Early Modern TibetTownsend has achieved something rare, drawing on a wide array of genres and weaving them into a remarkably rich whole. Her translations are beautifully done, and her analyses demonstrate her expertise as a close reader, as she patiently dwells on key elements to bring her sources to life. The result is sure to inspire others in her field to take more seriously the role of aesthetics in Tibetan writing. -- Jacob P. Dalton, Khyentse Foundation Distinguished University Professor in Tibetan Buddhism, University of California, BerkeleyA Buddhist Sensibility is a work of great and persuasive originality. Mindröling was not only a religious institution. It also offered what may be called a humanistic education, next to a religious one, and was remarkable for the place women occupied. Townsend has written a book that is at once scholarly and hugely readable. Her writing testifies to her fine control over the Tibetan sources she has used. This is an outstanding contribution not only to the field of Tibetan studies in general but also to anyone interested in the sociology of monastic life. -- Leonard W. J. van der Kuijp, Harvard UniversityWhat are the boundaries of the religious and the secular? And how does the realm of aesthetics become folded into the political? In this elegant study of Mindröling monastery, Townsend dislodges our immanent frame through a combination of historical rigor and literary acuity, providing a new model to understanding the pervasive place of institutions in the Tibetan Buddhist world. -- Tsering Shakya, author of The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet Since 1947This brilliantly innovative exploration of Buddhist aesthetics at Mindröling monastery, one of the foremost centers of Tibetan intellectual and artistic production, is also the history of an extraordinary family and the remarkable institution they developed during a pivotal time in Tibetan history. Townsend’s elegant work transforms our perspective on the relationship between materiality, renunciation, and social and political power. -- Annabella Pitkin, Lehigh UniversityA Buddhist Sensibility breaks new ground in considering a prominent Tibetan monastery not only for its philosophical and contemplative expertise, or even its political significance, but also for its aesthetics and cosmopolitanism. Townsend’s exploration of how these elements connected “court and cave,” or in other words Buddhist and worldly authority (lugs gnyis), is both artful and compelling. -- Sarah H. Jacoby, author of Love and Liberation: Autobiographical Writings of the Tibetan Buddhist Visionary Sera KhandroTownsend’s focus on aesthetics illuminates intimate connections between the aristocratic circles surrounding the Dalai Lama’s court and the visionary, ritual, and curricular innovations of Mindröling Monastery, transforming our understanding of the relationship between Buddhism and society far beyond Tibet. -- Benjamin Bogin, author of The Illuminated Life of the Great YolmowaDominique Townsend’s masterful study presents, for the first time, an authoritative and sustained consideration of Buddhist aesthetics in early modern Tibet. A Buddhist Sensibility reveals how aesthetic concerns influenced new approaches to religious education, prompted new forms of cultural production, and supported the rise of new Buddhist institutions and their charismatic leaders. It likewise documents Mindröling Monastery’s position as an exemplar of Buddhist excellence in the fields of philosophy, literature, art, ritual, and the highest aspirations of Tibetan literati culture. -- Andrew Quintman, Wesleyan UniversityDominique Townsend brings to her translations not only a careful reading of Classical Tibetan but also the insight and talents of a poet. She rightly situates Mindroling as the preeminent academy for scores of religious teachers and aristocratic officials, including the Great Fifth Dalai Lama, in seventeenth-century Tibet. -- Pema Bhum, Director of The Latse ProjectFor anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism, the institutional history of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, women’s role in Tibetan history, or Tibetan history at the turn of the eighteenth century, A Buddhist Sensibility is a must-read. * H-Buddhism *A Buddhist Sensibility contributes significantly to our understanding of a consequential monastic institution and its role in Tibetan history...[and] should be of interest to scholars of Tibetan, Himalayan, Central Asian, and Buddhist studies for its fine study of a monastic institution and its integration with lay society, as well as for its stimulating forays into aesthetics, poetics, and educational models. -- Nancy G. Book SynopsisNautilus Book Award WinnerThe first full biography of Mahaprajapati Gautami, the woman who raised the Buddha--examining her life through stories and canonical records.Mahaprajapati was the only mother the Buddha ever knew. His birth mother, Maya, died shortly after childbirth, and her sister Mahaprajapati took the infant to her breast, nurturing and raising him into adulthood. While there is a lot of ambiguity overall in the Buddha''s biography, this detail remains consistent across all Buddhist traditions and literature. In this first full biography of Mahaprajapati, The Woman Who Raised the Buddha presents her life story, with attention to her early years as sister, queen, matriarch, and mother, as well as her later years as a nun. Drawing from story fragments and canonical records, Wendy Garling reveals just how exceptional Mahaprajapati''s role was as leader of the first generation of Buddhist women, helping the Buddha establish an equal community of lay and monastic women and men. Mother to the Buddha, mother to early Buddhist women, mother to the Buddhist faith, Mahaprajapati''s journey is finally presented as one interwoven with the founding of Buddhism.

Harvard University Press Bound in Wedlock Slave and Free Black Marriage

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewHunter lets us hear the unheard stories of love and marriage among the enslaved. -- Geraldine Brooks * New York Times Book Review *[A] remarkable book…Her powerful, meticulously researched book describes how the grinding demands of slavery, white standards of marriage and the steady retreat from the qualified gains of the Civil War not only posed abiding challenges to African-American families but also inspired in them a tenacious commitment to marriage…Through careful use of difficult legal sources and close reading of slave narratives, ex-slave interviews, government agency reports, congressional debates, pension records and church minutes, Hunter gives resonant voice to the often illiterate people she studies…Hunter has harvested stories of human resilience from the cruelest of soils. Bound in Wedlock is an impeccably crafted testament to the African-Americans whose ingenuity, steadfast love and hard-nosed determination protected black family life under the most trying of circumstances. -- Mark M. Smith * Wall Street Journal *Dazzling…Hunter nudges the rich and raucous historiography on black marriage and black kinship in a new direction…Hunter’s powerfully written social history calls our attention to a world that was lost in the transition from slavery to freedom. Far from a ‘tangle of pathology,’ the history of black intimate relationships Hunter captures in Bound in Wedlock illuminates the relentless efforts of those African Americans who, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles and oppression, shaped their intimate connections on their own terms and fought for a vision of marriage that could survive both slavery and freedom. -- Robert D. Bland * H-Net Reviews *The unprecedented first comprehensive history of African American marriage in the nineteenth century…In this brilliantly researched book, Hunter examines the experiences of slave marriages as well as the marriages of free blacks. She also looks at the ways in which married couples rejected the Christian ideals of marriage. * Vibe *An important and comprehensive work that is worth reading by all, especially those interested in the affects of slavery on society today. -- Amy Lewontin * Library Journal (starred review) *In this extraordinary book, Tera Hunter builds on vast research to discern the resilient marriage forms that African Americans devised during the nineteenth century to cope with the havoc of bondage, the fleeting promise of emancipation, and the fresh compulsions that came with freedom. Written with eloquence, teeming with evidence, comprehensive in its sweep, challenging in its conclusions, Bound in Wedlock is a momentous achievement. -- Sydney Nathans, author of A Mind to Stay: White Plantation, Black HomelandTera Hunter’s fascinating and intensive assessment of slave and free marriages in the nineteenth century details powerfully both the supreme importance of kinship relations and the complex ways that the persistence of post–Civil War white supremacy vexed and hampered African American family integrity even more directly than legacies of slavery did. -- Nancy F. Cott, author of Public Vows: A History of Marriage and the NationBound in Wedlock is a groundbreaking history that challenges the belief that the crisis of black marital and familial relations can be traced directly to slavery. With a vast arsenal of archival evidence, Hunter illuminates the complex and flexible character of black intimacy and kinship and the precariousness of marriage in the context of racial and economic inequality. It is a brilliant book and one destined to invite vigorous debate. -- Saidiya Hartman, author of Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave RouteBound in Wedlock demonstrates that the history of African American marriage is far more than a legacy of slavery. Instead, it is a story at once rooted in a distinctive collective experience, intensely personal, and at the same time bound up in the legal, social, and cultural transformations that re-made marriage for all Americans. Wide-ranging, learned, and deeply researched, it is a splendid accomplishment. -- Dylan C. Penningroth, University of California, Berkeley, and the American Bar Foundation

Book SynopsisIn modern societies the functional differentiation of medicine and religion is the predominant paradigm. Contemporary therapeutic practices and concepts in healing systems, such as Transpersonal Psychology, Ayurveda, as well as Buddhist and Anthroposophic medicine, however, are shaped by medical as well as religious or spiritual elements. This book investigates configurations of the entanglement between medicine, religion, and spirituality in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa. How do political and legal conditions affect these healing systems? How do they relate to religious and scientific discourses? How do therapeutic practitioners position themselves between medicine and religion, and what is their appeal for patients?Trade Review"The perspectives and insights presented in this anthology can [...] make a valuable contribution to preventing stigmatising polarisation, pejorative hierarchisation or undifferentiated generalisation." Book SynopsisAn essential guide for practitioners and teachers to an inclusive form of tantra that directly confrontssystems of power and abuse as a path to liberation—From the foreword by Lama Rod Owens, MDiv, coauthor of Radical DharmaToday, a new generation of Buddhists searches for ways to adopt Vajrayana while staying true to its historical legacy. Modern Tantric Buddhism unpacks the principles and applications of this esoteric practice in an accessible and meaningful manner, connecting its roots to a socially engaged, modern-day dharma. Taking a traditional Tibetan pedagogical approach, Lama Justin von Bujdoss divides the book into three thematic sections: Body, as it applies to physicality and embodiment; Speech, or ethical action; and Mind, the context of awakening. Von Bujdoss challenges assumptions about what it means to be a socially engaged Buddhist, and presents Tantra as an ideal vehicle for critically examining today''s most pressing social issues while confronting the structural inequities of patriarchy, sexism, colonialism, and racism within Buddhist institutions.

Book SynopsisThis book is a translation of the second part of a commentary on the Treasury of Precious Qualities, the most celebrated work of Jigme Lingpa (1730–1798), one of the most important figures in the Nyingma lineage. In a slender volume of elegant verse, this root text (new in this revised edition) presents the entire Buddhist path according to the Nyingma school. Because it is so concise and makes use of elaborate poetic language, the commentary is indispensable.

  • The Wisdom Chapter: Jamgön Mipham's Commentary on

Shambhala Publications Inc The Wisdom Chapter: Jamgön Mipham's Commentary on

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first English translation of Mipham Rinpoche''s commentary on the "wisdom" chapter of Shantideva''s classic text, in which Mipham explains Madhyamaka philosophy from the perspective of the Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Shāntideva’s guide to the training of a Bodhisattva is one of the most important and beloved texts in the Tibetan tradition. The ninth chapter, however, dealing with Madhyamaka, the Middle Way, the most profound wisdom view of Mahayana Buddhism, has always posed unique challenges to readers. This commentary by the great scholar Mipham Rinpoche presents in quite straightforward terms Shāntideva’s exposition of emptiness, the essential foundation of all Buddhist doctrine, demonstrating that it is not only compatible with, but in fact crucial to, the correct understanding of other important Buddhist teachings such as karma, rebirth, and the practice of compassion. Mipham interprets Shāntideva according to the view of the Nyingma school, which in some respects was at variance with the religiously and politically dominant interpretation of the text in Tibet at that time. As a result, his commentary stirred up a furious debate. With the addition of a critique of Mipham Rinpoche’s view by a prominent scholar of the time, along with Mipham’s response, that debate is beautifully captured in this volume.
