SPCK Publishing On the Third Day: York Courses

Book SynopsisThe resurrection is the Big Story that turned a little Jewish protest movement into a world-transforming religion. And yet by Easter Monday we've almost forgotten about it and are planning our summer holidays. How can we re-capture the explosive power of the resurrection that ricocheted around the world? How can we live in the glow of resurrection and be an Easter people? How can 'there and then' become 'here and now'? That's what the On the Third Day course sets out to explore and discuss. The five sessions focus on: Session 1: Have I got news for you! Session 2: So what? The implications of the resurrection Session 3: ‘Let him Easter in us’: Personal discipleship in the light of the resurrection Session 4: Celebrating and praying Easter Session 5: A risen Church The course booklet of On the Third Day is accompanied by a lively CD, where Canon Simon Stanley grills New Testament scholar and author Tom Wright, writer Paul Vallely, Methodist minister Ruth Gee, and the Church of England’s first woman bishop, Libby Lane. ATF Press The Dominican Approaches in Education: Towards

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWith eleven new contributions, this second edition of essays on the sources and principles of Dominican values in education offers an extended sample of the many settings in which Dominican education, broadly understood, finds expression. Cherished by all Dominicans, these values are exemplified not only in the lives of well-known foundational Dominicans, but also in some of those many others who, on every continent and across time, have responded in typically Dominican ways at key moments in history. Educators, activists, philosophers, teachers, preachers, artists, healers and theologians at many levels share their analyses and reflections on educating in many different contexts, explicitly and implicitly demonstrating ideals and values common to the goals of Dominican education everywhere. It is hoped that this collection, offered again in this decade of Dominican Jubilee - 1206-1216 to 2006-2016 - will inform, inspire and encourage all those engaged in the great work of educating not only youth but people of all ages towards greater life and liberty. Dominicans can only mediate the story of Jesus effectively by the modelling of their own life. As Blessed Marie Poussepin showed us so clearly, life can preach more powerfully than words. Lilly Chalakkal OP .a true Dominican: intellectually present at the borders and limits of our social, cultural and religious world. Erik Borgman, Lay Dominican ..as a community of Dominican sisters.we feel the cry of our people, of our Lands of Latin America. In the daily listening [to]. people, who reveal a God who suffers with them, I feel, like Catherine of Siena, an invitation that comes from the depths of my heart, to ask God to have mercy on this world. Maria Julia Ardito OP [in] teaching theology.we also need to be passing on the art or practice of doing theology. [just] to repeat faithfully what the authorities have said.I do not believe.has ever been a good thing to do, but in our post-modern world it is not only inadequate and misleading, it can be destructive of whatever little faith some people, especially young people, might have. Albert Nolan OP Ultimately, the healing and educating of relationships within the Church requires a mysticism of resistance to all that diminishes the contributions of women and thereby jeopardises the Church''s viability as a relevant force in the world. The future of the Church depends upon the flourishing of women. Kathleen McManus OP Lagrange [at the Ecole Biblique].wanted to bring the interpretation of the Bible up to date. But there were many. who defended traditional interpretations as if they were matters of faith.. The church, however, gradually came to realise that Lagrange was right. Jerome Murphy-O''Connor OP In the midst of a patriarchal system.Rose [of Lima] has the mystical daring to see a Church where it is women who prepare the foundation stones for a new Christian community, has the liberty to call her Dominican brothers to be more faithful to preaching the gospel, denounces the religious life of her epoch that discriminates, and especially, gives herself without limit to the very poor. Can it be that as a Dominican family we will let ourselves be questioned by the mystical and prophetic daring of.Rose? Gabriela Zengarini OP .the Justice and Peace of God''s Reign is fostered through the encounter of dialogue among peers who are open to contemplative listening. It is here that we can find the authentic meaning of Justice and Peace: encountering the other, respecting the other, dialoguing with the other, in order to listen to his/ her needs and to enter into a fulfilling interchange of shared life. Book SynopsisIn November 2012 the Australian federal government announced the establishment of a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse''. This Royal Commission was set up after many years of reports of sexual abuse in Australia within religious institutions of various Christian churches, some state government inquiries and in the context of inquiries in other countries, most notably Ireland. The Royal Commission began its first hearing in April 2013. It has been forecast that the Commission will be hearing submissions for a number of years from witnesses, both from those who ask to speak to the Royal Commissioners and from those who will be asked to appear before the Commission. At the same time as the establishment of the Royal Commission, the Catholic Church in Australia established a Truth, Justice and healing Council to oversee the Catholic Church''s engagement with the Royal Commission. This collection brings together essays from biblical scholars, a church historian, theologians, ministers of religion from a number of churches, lawyers and a psychologist. They each address the issues of sexual abuse, society and the church in the context of the Australian inquiries. The volume ends with an overview of the processes engaged with by the Catholic Church and the State in the Republic of Ireland and reactions to these inquiries. The volume of essays considers sexual abuse from the perspective of the victims. What is to be done about the mess we are in over clerical sexual abuse? That question is puzzling concerned people today. This diverse collection offers them profitable reading, wherever they are coming from. It has enough useful suggestions and ideas to stimulate the calm, intelligent discussion now demanded by our communities.'' Edmund Campion, Australian Catholic University

Book SynopsisA new English translation of the founding text of the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) school of Buddhism, with the Tibetan version of the text included. The Root Stanzas holds an honored place in all branches of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as in the Buddhist traditions found in China, Japan, and Korea, because of the way it develops the seminal view of emptiness (shunyata), which is crucial to understanding Mahayana Buddhism and central to its practice. It is prized for its pithy and pointed arguments that show that things lack intrinsic being and thus are “empty” (shunya). They abide in the Middle Way, free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation.

  • Blazing Splendor

    Wisdom Publications,U.S. Blazing Splendor

Book SynopsisAn insightful memoir illuminating the profound experiences and magical world of a Tibetan Buddhist master.“Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche was among Tibetan Buddhism’s greatest teachers of the twentieth century. His memoir, Blazing Splendor, invites us to join him as he looks back over a life that put him at the center of an unparalleled spiritual abundance. Through his unblinking eyes we meet remarkable contemplative adepts. And through the lens of his awakened awareness, we see the world from a fresh, eye-opening perspective. It is a sweeping account that shares with readers a world where miracles, mystery, and deep insight are the order of the day—a world as reflected through the open, lucid quality of Tulku Urgyen’s mind.” —from the foreword by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence Blazing Splendor is a rare and profound gift: an intimate view into the world of one of the most celebrated and influential meditation masters of the last century. In these memoirs, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche (1920-96) recounts with incredible lucidity and humility his unique spiritual and familial heritage, his training in Tibetan Buddhism, and remarkable encounters with some of the most renowned masters of Tibet. This wide-reaching narrative stretches across generations to provide insight into the lived experience of contemplative adepts and into life before and after the Cultural Revolution, which left Tibet changed forever. Born the great-grandson of the seminal terma-revealer Chokgyur Lingpa and a holder of both Nyingma and Kagyu lineages, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche tells us of his unique family legacy, in which each generation has been saturated with spiritual accomplishments. He tells of how he, in time, became responsible for learning and then transmitting this lineage of Buddhist teachings, which continues today in the flourishing activities of his surviving sons Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, and Tsoknyi Rinpoche. Blazing Splendor is a window into the life of a Mahamudra and Dzogchen master that illuminates the transmission of sacred teachings in a modern world—a world we inhabit too, where the miraculous and the mundane exist side by side. This special, revised edition of the modern classic includes new images and color illustrations.

Book SynopsisPresents two key Indian Buddhist philosophical masterpieces that integrate the Buddhist ethos of wisdom and compassion, with their profound relevance to contemporary thought clarified by a renowned scholar of contemplative science. This volume contains English translations of two critical treatises of the Middle Way (Madhyamaka) Buddhist philosophical school: the Reason Sixty, by the most important of Indian thinkers, Nagarjuna (2nd CE), and the commentary by his most influential successor, Chandrakirti (7th CE). These two treatises emphasize the non-foundationalist reasoning for which Madhyamaka thought is famed, here within the context of that quintessential Buddhist topic, universal compassion, thereby illuminating the nondual nature of these two fundamental components of Indian Buddhist thought. The full import of Nagarjuna’s verses are brought to life by Chandrakirti, whose influence in Tibetan Buddhist educational institutions remains profound to the pr

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisA collection of texts and commentaries from the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism on Dzogchen, or Great Perfection teachings, which introduce us to our most basic nature?the clear and pristine awareness that is the nature of the mind. The Treasury of Precious Instructions, compiled by Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, one of Tibet?s greatest Buddhist masters, is a shining jewel of Tibetan literature, presenting essential teachings from the entire spectrum of practice lineages that existed in Tibet. In its eighteen volumes, Kongtrul brings together some of the most important texts on key topics of Buddhist thought and practice as well as authoring significant new sections of his own.Teachings and practices of the Nyingma lineage, the first of the eight lineages, are presented in the first and second volumes of the series, the second one of which is translated here. These texts are all related to the three yogas: Mahayoga, Anuyoga, and Atiyoga. The first Nyingma volume includes works that are representative of the first two yogas, while this volume focuses especially on those belonging to the ?pith-instruction class,? specifically those related to the unsurpassed secret section?the Heart Essence, or Nyingtik. According to the understanding of the Nyingma school, the most profound tenet of the Buddha?s teachings is that within the mind of every being?as its bedrock, fundamental stratum, or element?lies the buddha nature. The teachings of this volume each present this essential tenet in a variety of ways and are composed by various Tibetan and Indian masters, including the Buddha, Garab Dorje, Mañjusrimitra, Srisi?ha, Jñanasutra, Padmasambhava, Longchen Rabjam, and Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Taye.

Wisdom Publications,U.S. Samsara, Nirvana, and Buddha Nature

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis“The material in this volume is invaluable for those who sincerely wish to understand the Buddhist path and begin to follow it.” —Venerable Sangye Khadro, author of How to MeditateThe third volume in the Dalai Lama’s definitive and comprehensive series on the stages of the Buddhist path, The Library of Wisdom and Compassion. Knowledge of buddha nature reveals and reconciles the paradox of how the mind can be the basis for both the duhkha of samsara (the unpurified mind) and the bliss and fulfillment of nirvana (the state of true freedom and peace). To illustrate this, Samsara, Nirvana, and Buddha Nature first takes readers through Buddhist thought on the self, the four truths, and their sixteen attributes. It then explains afflictions—including how they arise and their antidotes—followed by an examination of karma and cyclic existence, and, finally, a deep and thorough elucidation of buddha nature. Samsara, Nirvana, and Buddha Nature shows us how to purify our minds and cultivate awakened qualities. “This book is a veritable tour de force in its explanation of the role of the mind in samsara and the realization of nirvana, which is the mind’s own ultimate nature. In its examination of buddha nature—spanning early discussions of the mind’s potential in the Pali canon through to the teachings of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection—it casts a bright light to dispel the darkness of materialism, which deludedly reduces the mind to a mere epiphenomenon or emergent property of the brain. Books such as this are urgently needed to trigger a true revolution in the mind sciences.”—B. Alan Wallace, founder and president, Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies

Wisdom Publications,U.S. Early Buddhist Oral Tradition: Textual Formation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA fascinating investigation into the formation and transmission of the early Buddhist oral tradition. For hundreds of years after his death, the Buddha’s teachings were transmitted orally, from person to person. In this volume, acclaimed scholar-monk Bhikkhu Analayo examines the impact of such oral transmission on early Buddhist texts, be these monastic rules, verses, or prose portions of the early discourses. He scrutinizes various oral aspects of these texts, surveying evidence for memory errors, the impact of attempts at systematization, and instances of additions and innovations. Finally, he explores the implications of the nature of these texts as the final product of centuries of oral transmission and evaluates the type of conclusions that can—and cannot—be drawn based on them.  In-depth but still accessible, Early Buddhist Oral Tradition is an engrossing and enlightening inquiry into the early Buddhist oral tradition.

In its eighteen volumes, Kongtrul brings together some of the most important texts on key topics of Buddhist thought and practice while also authoring significant new sections of his own. This volume presents a selection of teachings and practices centered on the mahāsiddhas, Indian masters of tantric Buddhism, some of whom were of vital importance in transmitting the Vajrayāna teachings to Tibet. The mahāsiddha Mitrayogin, whose work forms the majority of this volume, visited Tibet in the late twelfth century. His ritual texts and instructions are translated from Tibetan, including sādhanas, empowerments, guru yogas, authorization rituals for protector deities, and detailed compositions on Mahāmudra practice, or resting in the nature of mind.In addition to instructions given by mahāsiddhas, this volume includes ritual practices to visualize them and transmit their blessings, including a devotional text composed by Jamgön Kongtrul himself. Book SynopsisShunryu Suzuki’s extraordinary gift for conveying traditional Zen teachings using ordinary language is well known to the countless readers of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. In Zen Is Right Here, his teachings are brought to life powerfully and directly through stories told about him by his students. These living encounters with Zen are poignant, direct, humorous, paradoxical, and enlightening; and their setting in real-life contexts makes them wonderfully accessible. Like the Buddha himself, Suzuki Roshi gave profound teachings that were skilfully expressed for each moment, person, and situation he encountered. He emphasized that while the ungraspable essence of Buddhism is constant, the expression of that essence is always changing. Each of the stories presented here is an example of this versatile and timeless quality, showing that the potential for attaining enlightenment exists right here, right now, in this very moment.
