Christian Focus Publications Ltd Revival on the Causeway Coast: The 1859 Revival
Book SynopsisSet within a wider socio-political and religious context this book takes a close look at the impact of the 1859 revival on the town of Coleraine on the north coast of Ireland. The salient features of the revival are outlined, the views of supporters as well as critics discussed and analysed. This book is one of the first detailed accounts, based largely upon archival and other primary source material, of the impact of the 1859 revival on a local community in the north of Ireland. This revival is described by Railton as the"most explosive repercussion of the American Revival". (Referring to the Revival which took place in America 1857-1858). In this area there was a real enthusiasm to expect great things from God with people committing themselves to daily prayer meetings. Nick Railton tells the story of how ordinary people communicated a simple message in simple words which led to 100,000 men, women and children being converted. The Message of the Revival: "At the centre of the revival message stood Christ, the Eternal Son of God, and His work of redemption on the cross of Calvary. His saving works then, His sanctifying work now, His work of judgement in the future. Jesus is portrayed not simply as a good teacher or prophet, but as the Lord of history who is coming back soon. He is the One who has conquered death and the devil; His followers are part of a conquering band, marching to a better land." Nick RailtonTrade ReviewHere is an historical record which will focus the mind and revive the soul. It is God's story, for revival always is. It is a human story of repentance forgiveness hope and new life. The Gospel is not about impotence but about impact and permanent eternal change. This study is about an injection of Gospel truth and life which the Church and the world desperately needs today. May it be widely read, thoroughly enjoyed and more importantly used by God to light flames of revival which will spread like Divine fire into dry and hard hearts. In this year of the 150th anniversary of the 1859 Revival here is a timely reminder of the greatness holiness and power of God. This is a story of hope. It should come with a health warning...that when God moves, nothing can stop Him! We have been warned! Hallelujah! -- Ken Clarke (Bishop of Kilmore Elphin & Ardagh)"Revival on the Causeway Coast is a fascinating and gripping story retold by an author whose insights and conclusions are refreshingly open and honest. An absorbing read, this well-researched volume is one that I found impossible to put down." -- Sam Gordon (Director of Ministries - Messianic Testimony)"This work is a valuable addition to the literature on this "season of revival," a revival that Harvard historian Perry Miller called "The Event of the Century." I heartily endorse it!" -- Timothy K. Beougher (Billy Graham Professor of Evangelism, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)... spiritually uplifting and should simulate God's people to pray that God will revive us again. -- Evangelical Times"This volume provides a penetrating insight into a fascinating instance of the strange and wonderful workings of God." -- Jonathan Stephen (Principal, Wales Evangelical School of Theology, Bridgend, Wales)

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Toward a Sure Faith: J. Gresham Machen and The
Book SynopsisJ. Gresham Machen is one of the pivotal figures of modern theological thought. He was involved in many major theological battles, holding the line until he had to leave his seminary and denomination, but at no time being a close-minded obscurantist. As David Calhoun says in his foreword 'with his rigorous methodology and his complete honesty, Machen in no way contributed to "the scandal of the evangelical mind". Machen was a thinker and a first rate theologian - but he carried his conclusions further than most would dare.Previous biographies of Machen have tended to emphasise the disputes he was involved in and ignore his early intellectual development that led him to take the positions he did. Previous biographical attempts have tended to stereotype him as a fundamentalist (an identification which he himself generally rejected) and therefore fail to seriously consider Machen in his own terms and in the context of the broader intellectual currents of his day.Trade ReviewChrisope's Toward A Sure Faith will prove to be a welcomed and needed addition to the libraries of Christians in general and pastors in particular for at least four reasons. First, pastors will find the book to be an aid in their counseling of young converts shaken by the still rampant historicism found in both secular and religious institutions of higher learning. Those involved in personal intellectual struggles will be instructed and encouraged as they engage with Chrisope's presentation of Machen's own struggles and discover the oft-overlooked fallacies of the historicism.Second, Chrisope's representation of Machen will encourage Christians to think deeply concerning the claims of orthodox, supernatural Christianity. Because we do not live in a closed universe, the saving truth of Christ cannot be comprehended through convincing truths based on historical findings alone. Chrisope notes,[Machen} believed that there is a subjective element in human knowledge; that philosophical presuppositions may influence one's evaluation of historical evidence; that the evidence in itself is not necessarily convincing; and that the human mind is incapable of attaining to truth (in the sense of recognising the truthfulness of Christianity) or of exercising faith by its on power, but that for these ends the operation of the holy spirit is necessary. (189)Presuppositions are changed through the work of the Holy Spirit in changing deeply held perceptions. In our day, when evangelistic success is measured by an acquiescent prayer at the end of a prescribed gospel presentation, we would do ell to remember that conversion is the result of the working of the Holy Spirit in the life of the individual.Third, Chrisope's study of Machen reminds those seeking to enter the ministry of the need for intellectual integrity. While Machen would debate and tolerate academics who rejected orthodox Christianity, Chrisope notes that he manifested a distinct unwillingness to consider other liberal churchmen as anything other than dishonest traitors who were denying the faith they professed. (131)Certainly those who use the terminology and expressions of orthodox Christianity merely to gain religious employment are little more than base hirelings. Machen sought ordination only after his intellectual struggles were resolved in his own mind.Last we are reminded that truth matters, and neither the attainment of truth nor its defense are without high personal costs. Machen underwent intense personal struggles in his seeking after truth. Once he was convinced of the truth of supernatural Christianity, he could not remain silent while fellow churchmen were undermining orthodoxy. Consequently, he endured intense ecclesiastical struggles in opposing heterodoxy. Twenty first century Baptists will do well to follow the example of this twentieth century Presbyterian defender of the faith. -- The Founder's Journal"In the last decade J. Gresham Machen has attracted the attention, and gained the appreciation, of even some Roman Catholic and main-line Protestant writers. Terry Chrisope's excellent study of Machen as a New Testament scholar adds another dimension to the understanding of this conservative theologian of the early 20th century who yet speaks into the post-modern culture of the 21st century. Machen upheld principles that still serve well the Christian faith more than two generations after his death in 1937." -- William S. Barker, Professor of Church History. Westminster Theological Seminary (Professor of Church History, Emeritus, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)... Chrisope has done us all a great service, and we must be grateful for his sympathetic and detailed treatment of a man and a period which remain in so many ways paradigmatic for students and scholars today. -- Churchman Journal"To follow Terry Chrisope as he follows Machen is not only a valuable exercise in historical study but a strengthening of one's faith in God's Word... Dr. Chrisope skilfully weaves in much valuable information about Machen and his times." -- David B. Calhoun, author of a major history of Princeton Seminary ((1937–2021) Professor of Church History, Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri)

Christian Focus Publications Ltd And Then There Were Nine: How to live up to ten
Book SynopsisThere has been an erosion of the role of the Ten Commandments in the life of today's church. There has been a twofold pressure - both from outside, and inside, the church. From outside the church, the post-modern world-view regards regulations that restrict personal choice as old fashioned. Whilst most Christians would feel that they are not in agreement with such concepts, they have been subtly influenced by them. From inside the church, ideas have gained ground that the Ten Commandments have been superseded by other commandments from Jesus. Whilst most people base these ideas on biblical grounds, they do also reflect the change in world-view surrounding the church.David Searle clearly shows the distinctions between the Ten Commandments and other Old Testament law. He demonstrates that there is still a role in your life for the Ten Commandments. He explains the background to each of the commandments and what they mean for you today. He also explains how the Ten Commandments are there for you to enjoy the Christian life.Trade Review"...a book worth reading, which will stimulate the mind and the heart." -- CLC"It is a thought-provoking study....it is a book worth reading, which will stimulate the mind and the heart." -- Rod Badams, Evangelical Times"How good to see a book like this!...challenging, very practical, and is a timely reminder to our age that Christianity is all about worshipping and revering a God who is holy and has the best interests of his creatures at heart." -- George Macaskill, Stornoway, The Rutherford Journal of Church Ministry

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Theological Studies in Genesis & Romans:
Book SynopsisVolume 3 covers two important areas of Scripture relevant for evangelism today. These well thought out and thought of expositions are by a much loved figure and edited by respected theologians of today.William Still (1911-97) was a Church of Scotland pastor at Gilcomston South, Aberdeen, for over 50 years. He has had a major influence on the church, both world-wide and in the UK, and with his local community.Trade Review'It has been said of the great North American pastor-theologian Jonathan Edwards that he had the ability to take an idea and hold it in his mind, turning it round like a diamond to view it from every possible perspective. William Still would make no claim to rival Edwards; yet one of the obvious passions of his ministry has been to take several fundamental biblical insights and explore how these apply in a variety of areas of Christian thought and life. The result is striking.' -- Sinclair Ferguson (Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi)'To read.... William Still's writings is to come into touch with a mind of rare perception and profound spiritual insight.... his ministry has left such an enduring mark on generations of Christian people.' -- Rev. James Philip'Mr Still's ministry in public and private is suffused with a love for both God and man. Those who have had the privilege of knowing him agree that these interconnected and inseparable loves have made him human, but with a heavenly spirit; serious, but with a deep note of joy; hard working, but with a thankful heart; and, perhaps most of all, immensely approachable and loveable.' -- Nigel M. de S. Cameron'Here is a rich collection of William Still's studies in Christian faith and life which illustrate the maturity, potency, relevance and practicality of his lengthy and vibrant biblical ministry.' -- Rev. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Death Or Glory: The Church's mission in
Book SynopsisThe Church in Britain is popularly represented as an anachronism. To many it is.Egon Bahr, former political advisor to the German Chancellor, Willy Brandt, said "You have to recognise realities in order to change them." These wise words carry a challenge to those wishing to change the spiritual landscape of Scotland and the rest of Britain.Today 14% of Scots still attend church but 44% of the population say that religion has only 'a minor part' to play in Scottish public life, 9% said it played 'no part at all' and only 8% feel it played 'a major part'. To see how this could be changed, a special conference for theologians and church leaders was convened in Edinburgh by the Scottish Evangelical Theological Society and Evangelical Alliance Scotland.A range of experts examined what could be learnt from history and how the church could be effective against the contemporary cultural backdrop. This book is an edited collection of the contributions made to the conference. Dr Geoffrey Grogan of the Glasgow Bible College was one of the prime movers behind the event - it is to him that this volume is dedicated.Contributors: David Smith, David Bebbington, Will Storar, Chris Wright, Peter Neilson, Andrew Bogle, John Mackinnon, David Anderson. Trade ReviewThere is an urgent need for mainline churches to move from maintenance to mission. Here, in short compass, are the reasons for that transition and why the church needs to act now. These articles should move us to prayerful and thoughtful actions. -- Rev. J Stafford Carson, NewtownabbeyInformative and inspirational. Theological and practical. The value of Death or Glory is that it offers a look at mission in Scotland from several different angles help us to gain our 360 degree perspective. Scotland cannot rely on its spiritual heritage from the past. I hope this helpfully challenges the church to face the task of the future. It would be a sin if those in other parts of the United Kingdom did not read and benefit from these reflections. There is so much that those south of the border and elsewhere can learn. -- Derek Tidball, Fomerly principal of London Bible College (Formerly Principal of London School of Theology)Devolution is the in-word politically. Spiritually England and Scotland preach the same gospel and fight similar battles. As one who has ministered on both sides of the Border I have found this book compelling, disturbing, and yet hopefully reading. -- Rev. Book Synopsis Long regarded as one of the pre–eminent theologians in America, Roger Nicole has devoted a lifetime to teaching and defending the orthodox belief on issues under attack including the inspiration of scripture, the nature of the atonement, the existence of hell, and more recently the openness of God issue. Trade Review"Roger Nicole's insight, clarity, patience, thoroughness, geniality and good sense have given him anchor-man status for over a generation..." -- J. I. Packer, Regent's College, Vancouver ((1926–2020), Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada)"This is a magnificent book. Professor Nicole has been an outstanding figure in US evangelicalism for over 50 years and has been a founder member of the Evangelical Theological Society... Standing Forth is a collection of his most important essays and articles covering many topics (the doctrine of God, the five points of Calvinism, marriage, universalism, the preservation of the saints) but with a particular focus on the doctrines of Scripture and the Atonement. like B.B. Warfield before him, Professor Nicole seems 'constitutionally incapable of writing an unclear sentence'. His grasp of the issues and ability to present them with pristine clarity and simplicity are sure signs of the profundity of his thought." -- Themelios"This is a marvelous book, a treasure trove of godly wisdom from one of the master theologians of our times." -- Timothy George, Executive Editor, Christianity Today (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)"These pages contain a wealth of biblical, historical, systematic, polemical and practical theology. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Redeem the Time: Sin in the writings of John Owen
Book SynopsisJohn Owen was one of the great Puritans of the 17th Century whose writings and theology have gone through a welcome resurgence of interest in the last fifty years. His writings are a constant reference source for spiritual truths and practical insights.Dr Steve Griffiths considers how Owen dealt with the problem of Sin, which as with all reformed theologians was a fundamental concern in his thinking. Owen's treatment of sin does not stand in isolation; it can only be considered in the light of his doctrine of God and what it means for man to reflect that image.Trade Review"To read John Owen is to enter a rare world. Whenever I return to one of his works I find myself asking ‘Why do I spend time reading lesser literature?' I believe all lovers of John Owen and his writings, like myself, will salute Dr Griffiths for sharing with us the results of his arduous studies. ...the rediscovery of Owen's theology has proved to be a great blessing to many. Into that blessing I hope you will now allow Dr Griffiths to lead you." -- Dr. Sinclair B Ferguson (Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi)"Evangelicals have lost our forefathers' sense of the depth of sin and the need for holiness; I believe that this book, in bringing us to Owen's writings, could help us to recover it." -- Stephen Walton, ChurchmanIf the book can be summarised, let it be in these words: 'Spiritual-mindedness is the goal towards which all believers should be striving in their walk with God. Conformity to Christ is a dynamic principle. Growth into the image of God is a dynamic principle. To become fully human, to become who we were created to be, the development of spiritual-mindedness must necessarily begin with an awareness of our innate sinfulness and a knowledge of just how far we have fallen from God' (p.208). -- The Banner of Truth Magazine"Like John Owen, Steve Griffiths is a minister of the gospel with a deep love for Christ and for his word, and who is passionately concerned to make the teaching of the Bible relevant to his inner-city congregation in the twenty-first century. In a therapeutic and self-obsessed age such as ours, the church needs to hear again the Pauline teaching on sin and grace which Owen expounded so brilliantly." -- Carl R Trueman, Associate Professor of Church History and Historical Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia (Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania)

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Light in the City: Stories from London City
Book Synopsis Light in the City is a set of testimonies with a difference. Most are the stories of London City Missionaries who come from a variety of backgrounds. Their experiences before conversion were varied and the subjects covered in their stories include: alcohol and drug abuse, sexual abuse, racial issues, poverty, violence, involvement in cults such as Rastafarianism, Jehovah Witnesses and the occult. Along with these stories are testimonies of several people who have come to faith through the work and witness of LCM. Some of these came into the kingdom dramatically and others very gently. They illustrate the work of the Mission and the care the missionaries have for those they meet. The book ends with a short explanation of the Christian Faith - taking the form of answers to the kind of questions the missionaries meet in the course of their work. Trade Review"Puts us at the scene of the action... A realistic selection of examples in that not all live happily ever after." -- Canon Kenneth Prior"God took ordinary men and women, some of whom faced big problems in their own lives, and saved them. Their stories are fascinating, their work is a slog but it's never dull." -- Maureen McKenna, Founder of the Open Door Trust, Glasgow

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Big Green Tree At No. 11: Tammy and Jake learn
Book Synopsis Jake and Tammy live in Canterbury Place. Together with their friends and family and neighbours they have plenty of adventures and through them they learn about life and the world they live in. Canterbury Place is the fictional setting of a series of books exploring deep issues. This is a great book for a child who has lost a friend or family member. During their adventures, we, too, want to know the answers to the questions that Tammy and Jake ask. In a loving context their Mum and Dad tell them that they need to know about the world of animals, plants and human beings - and about spiritual issues that everyone has to face before they die. Movingly written in a delightful style - these books will both entertain and educate. Trade ReviewThis is a story from the Canterbury Place series. The story takes place one day when eight-year-old Jake and four-year-old Tammy spent a day with their mother. As they prepared to go shopping with their mother they asked questions about death. The discussion began when the children realized falling fall leaves were the lovely green leaves of spring which had died. As they questioned, their mother answered and used each thing they saw to help them understand that because of Jesus' death on the cross eternal life is available to those who believe on him. The story uses Scottish expressions not used n America, making it especially interesting. Both Jake and Tammy learned a lot that day which began with the discussion of the falling leaves. The print is excellent for young readers and the illustrations refreshing. -- Christian ObserverI wrote this book because we needed it. I'd seen children trying to get their heads round the whole death thing, and I'd seen adults try to explain it to them. I wanted to write something that you could give to a child who was mourning. But I didn't want the book to make them any more sadder than they were already. I also wanted to be able to give the book to a child who was simply curious, as children often are, about something which we know very little about. But as it turns out God tells us everything we need to know about death and the life to come in his Word. So there, I've named my source, and trust that you will find this book helpful. -- Catherine Mackenzie: Author (Author and CF4K Editor)

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Doc Talk: A fairly serious survey of all that
Book Synopsis People ask the strangest things in Christian books - a pocket sized large print Bible or maybe a profound leader's guide for instant Bible studies! God is the most interesting person you could know, so why did you ever doubt it could be done? Trade Review'Whenever Larry Dixon writes about doctrine, it's very understandable AND practical. Bohlau Verlag Weltgeschichte: Imperien, Religionen und Systeme. 15.-19. Jahrhundert

Peeters Publishers Metaphors in the Psalms
Book SynopsisUnderstanding the Psalms implies understanding the metaphors they use in bringing to expression the reflections on God, the world, the enemies, the self. In modern scholarship the study of figurative language was often neglected in favor of discussions of genre, poetical form or canonical organisation. The present volume brings the study of metaphorical language back to the heart of Psalm scholarship. Three areas of investigation are given particular attention in this collection of nineteen contributions, written by leading scholars in the field: 1. The elucidation of hitherto misunderstood or unrecognized metaphors; 2. The study of conceptually interrelated clusters of metaphors and 3. The role metaphors play in poetic and argumentative development of the Psalms.

Australian Theological Forum Religion and Science in the Context of Chinese Culture
Book SynopsisReligion and science in the context of Chinese culture is indeed a complex and multi-faceted dialogue, The approaches to the dialogue of each of the main religions traditions - Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, the folk traditions and Taoism - are different in each tradition. Thus this volume actually represents a two-dimensional dialogue. There is the dialogue between science and religion to each of the traditions and there is the second dimension of inter-religious dialogue. Given this complexity it is not surprising that the points of contact among the authors are relatively few. While this is on the one hand regrettable, it is also hoped that having this laid out the dimensions of the dialogue, these papers can set the stage for future dialogue along both axes, and live and work in Chinese cultural settings. The book covers a variety of topics including traditional Chinese philosophy and natural knowledge; the modern Chinese academic community and the relationship between science and religion; folk medicine in Chinese culture; and environmental concerns.
