Book SynopsisThese volumes comprise a collection of papers by Michael E. Stone, written over a period of 35 years. Stone is a leading scholar in two different fields of research, the Jewish literature of the Second Temple period including the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Armenian Studies. So this collection includes essays relating to the origins and nature of the Apocryphal literature and its relationship with the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as more specific studies devoted to themes that have interested Stone throughout his career, including Messianism, 4 Ezra, Adam and Eve, and Aramaic Levi Document. His Armenian interests have embraced the Armenian Biblical text, Armenian pilgrimage to and presence in the Holy Land and Armenian paleography and epigraphy. Papers included in the volumes, some of which were originally published in obscure venues, touch on all these themes. A number of previously unpublished papers are included.

  • Peeters Publishers The Strange World of Human Sacrifice

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis"The Strange World of Human Sacrifice" is the first modern collection of studies on one of the most gruesome and intriguing aspects of religion. The volume starts with a brief introduction, which is followed by studies of Aztec human sacrifice and the literary motif of human sacrifice in medieval Irish literature. Turning to ancient Greece, three cases of human sacrifice are analysed: a ritual example, a mythical case, and one in which myth and ritual are interrelated. The early Christians were the victims of accusations of human sacrifice, but in turn imputed the crime to heterodox Christians, just as the Jews imputed the crime to their neighbours. The ancient Egyptians rarely seem to have practised human sacrifice, but buried the pharaoh's servants with him in order to serve him in the afterlife, albeit only for a brief period at the very beginning of pharaonic civilization. In ancient India we can follow the traditions of human sacrifice from the earliest texts up to modern times, where especially in eastern India goddesses, such as Kali, were long worshipped with human victims. In Japanese tales human sacrifice often takes the form of self-sacrifice, and there may well be a line from these early sacrifices to modern "kamikaze". The last study throws a surprising light on human sacrifice in China. The volume is concluded with a detailed index

  • Peeters Publishers Gratia Et Certamen: The Relationship Between

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe issues involved in the discussion between the monks of Hadrumetum/Marseille and Augustine range from questions of "initium fidei" and "naturae bonum", to the understanding of predestination. The monks' reaction to Augustine's doctrine of absolute sovereign grace must be seen as a plea in favour of a harmonizing approach, where human commitment is also envisaged as playing, at times, a primary role. In the light of a dialogical synergism, of a unitarian and cosmic view of God's "oeconomia salutis", and relying on a strong ascetic framework, the monks biggest fear was that the implications of Augustine's predestinarian view would jeopardise the importance of the struggle for perfection, the meaning of God's universal salvific will, of Christ's redeeming action, and finally of the Church. The different theological traditions to which Augustine and the monks appealed play also a significant role, as do the specific social and religious context in which they respectively moved.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEver since Protestant missionaries from the United States first reached Hawai'i in 1820, they have inspired conflicting passions. In evangelical circles, the missionaries are praised for christianizing Hawai'i, transforming Hawaiian into a written language, and inoculating the islanders against smallpox. But this celebratory assessment is rejected by modern-day Hawaiian nationalists, who excoriate the missionaries as advance agents of U.S. imperialism. In this biography of pioneer missionaries Peter and Fanny Gulick, Clifford Putney offers a balanced view of their contributions. He says the nationalists are right to credit the missionaries with drawing Hawai'i into America's political orbit, but argues that the missionary enterprise helped in some ways to preserve key elements of Hawaiian culture.Based primarily on letters, journals, and other archival materials, Putney's book provides readers with a detailed portrait of the lives of Peter and Fanny Gulick. Inspired by America's Second Great Awakening to spread the Gospel overseas, the Gulicks voyaged to Hawai'i in 1828 and lived there for the next forty-six years, actively proselytizing and working to change the islands. On Kaua'i, they helped to ensure the success of Hawai'i's first sugar plantation and acquainted Hawaiians with inventions such as the wagon. On Moloka'i (later the site of a leper colony) the couple struggled merely to survive. And on O'ahu, they took up ranching and helped to found Punahou School, the alma mater of President Barack Obama. While laboring in Hawai'i, the Gulicks interacted with kings, queens, and other historically important figures, and Putney chronicles those relationships. He also explores issues of race and gender, and sheds new light on the democratization of government, the spread of capitalism, and the privatization of land. From these last two developments, a number of missionaries grew immensely rich, but the Gulicks did not, and neither did their descendants. A group that includes influential missionaries, educators, and physical fitness experts, the descendants of Peter and Fanny have had numerous books written about them, but Putney is the first to write extensively about the progenitors of the Gulick clan.

Book SynopsisIn "Creating a Human World", Trappist monk and scholar Ernest Daniel Carrere explores what it means to be fully human, to live in a shared world, and to resist the easy tendency to flee reality and seek pleasure in material pursuits. To do so he examines the writings of three great modern thinkers - Sigmund Freud, Martin Heidegger, and Soren Kierkegaard - and proposes a new reading of their work in light of his own understanding of New Testament teachings. Carrere elucidates the paradoxical spiritual truth that salvation lies not in an escape from humanity, but in embracing it. An interdisciplinary tour de force, this book will appeal to anyone interested in philosophy, psychology, religion, or cultural anthropology.Trade Review"This timely and insightful work provides a cogent diagnosis of our spiritual predicament and makes an urgent plea for the only kind of remedy that might help us to live well as contingent beings." - Rick A. • Why the Science and Religion Dialogue Matters:

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. Why the Science and Religion Dialogue Matters:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEach world faith tradition has its own distinctive relationship with science, and the science-religion dialogue benefits from a greater awareness of what this relationship is. In this book, members of the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR) offer international and multi-faith perspectives on how new discoveries in science are met with insights regarding spiritual realities. The essays reflect the conviction that “religion and science each proceed best when they’re pursued in dialogue with each other, and also that our fragmented and divided world would benefit more from a stronger dialogue between science and religion.”In Part One, George F. R. Ellis, John C. Polkinghorne, and Holmes Rolston III, each a Templeton Prize winner, discuss their views on why the science and religion dialogue matters. They are joined in Part Two by distinguished theologians Fraser Watts and Philip Clayton, who place the dialogue in an international context; John Polkinghorne’s inaugural address to the ISSR in 2002 is also included. In Part Three, five members of the ISSR look at the distinctive relationships of their faiths to science: •Carl Feit on Judaism •Munawar Anees on Islam •B.V. Subbarayappa on Hinduism •Trinh Xuan Thuan on Buddhism •Heup Young Kim on Asian ChristianityGeorge Ellis, the recently elected second president of ISSR, summarizes the contributions of his colleagues. Ronald Cole-Turner then concludes the book with a discussion of the future of the science and religion dialogue.Table of Contents Preface Fraser Watts Part 1: Why the Dialogue Matters 1. • Divine Action: Examining God's Role in an Open

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. Divine Action: Examining God's Role in an Open

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDivine Action, written by philosopher, theologian, and scholar Keith Ward was briefly available in 1990 before a publishing consolidation took it out of circulation. In this edition, the author has added a new preface reflecting the argument in light of the recent resurgence of naturalism in philosophy. In an intellectual counterpoint to antispirituality arguments, Ward explores what is involved in the idea of creation and particular divine actions in a world of scientific law and intelligibility. He presents his argument for the presence of divine action in the natural world and offers a rationale for divine operation as a continuous spiritual-natural conversation. Dr.Ward defends the Christian doctrine of Incarnation but is also more concerned with discussing the “big questions” in science and religion—those concerning existence, purpose, and inner process. His study embraces an analysis of freedom and necessity, the origins of suffering, constraints of creation, prayer as participation in divine action, miracles as epiphanies of the spirit, divine nature and human nature, and redemption. For scholars in philosophy, theology, and fields that engage in the dialogue of science and religion, this book presents rigorous scientific research and scholarship that significantly contribute to the ongoing debates over the divine operation and divine providence. Book Synopsis This anthology brings together, for the first time, leading essays and book chapters from theologians, philosophers, and scientists on their research on ethics, altruism, and love. Because the general consensus today is that scholarship in moral theory requires empirical research, the arguments of the leading scholars presented in this book will be fundamental to those examining issues in love, ethics, religion, and science. The first half of The Altruism Reader offers essential selections from religious texts, leading contemporary scholars, and cutting-edge ethicists. Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism are represented. Among the highly respected writers are Thomas Aquinas, the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, John Polkinghorne, Stephen Pope, Louis Fischer, Amira Shamma Abdin, Katharine Doob Sakenfeld, and Daniel Day Williams. The book’s second half features primary readings on love and altruism from the sciences. Here the focus is on anthropology, psychology, sociology, biology, and neurology, with material written by Daniel C. Batson, David Sloan Wilson, Robert Wright, Stephen G. Post, Robert Axelrod, Richard Dawkins, Holmes Rolston III, and other renowned scientists and philosophers. “Virtually all people act—and often talk—as if they have some clue about love. We speak about loving food, falling in love, loving God, feeling loved, and loving a type of music. We say that love hurts, love waits, love stinks, and love means never having to say you’re sorry. We use the word and its derivatives in a wide variety of ways . . . . My definition of love is this: To love is to act intentionally, in sympathetic response to others (including God), to promote well-being.” —Thomas Jay Oord Table of Contents Preface vii Part I: Defining Love 1. • Divine Love: Perspectives from the World's

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. Divine Love: Perspectives from the World's

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis The contributors to Divine Love cover a broad spectrum of world religions, comparing and contrasting approaches among Christians of several denominations, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and adherents of traditional African religions. Each chapter focuses on the definition and conceptual boundaries of divine love; its expression and experience; its instrumentality and salience; how it can become distorted, and how it has been made manifest or restored by great historic exemplars of altruism, compassion, and unlimited love. The ultimate aim for many of the world’s major faith traditions is to love and be loved by God—to live in connection with the Divine, in union with the Beloved, in reconciliation with the Ultimate. Religious scholars Jeff Levin and Stephen G. Post have termed this connection “divine love.” In their new collection of the same name, they have invited eight of the world’s preeminent religious scholars to share their perspectives on the what, how, and why of divine love. From this diverse gathering of perspectives emerges evidence that to love and to be loved by God, to enter into a mutual and covenantal relationship with the Divine, may well offer solutions to many of the current crises around the world. Only a loving relationship with the Source of being within the context of the great faith and wisdom traditions of the world can fully inform and motivate the acts of love, unity, justice, compassion, kindness, and mercy for all beings that are so desperately required to counter the toxic influences in the world. Contributors: William C. Chittick, Vigen Guroian, Ruben L. F. Habito, William K. Mahony, John S. Mbiti, Jacob Neusner, Clark H. Pinnock, and David Tracy. Trade Review "Divine Love is an outstanding collection of wonderful essays. Here accomplished religious writers from many faith traditions share their knowledge and insight. Take and read." —Sidney Callahan, PhD, author of Created for Joy: A Christian View of Suffering "This powerful collection investigates the core of the world's great religious traditions. It is the idea of divine love—love from the divine, inspiring love for the divine, invoking a horizontal love between humans, and creating a connectedness throughout all creation. These essays not only beautifully define divine love in each of the world religions—a gift in itself—but show why it is the answer to the crises of modern life, an answer that secularism, fundamentalism, and the new therapeutic religions cannot themselves convey. This is an excellent book for both the classroom and the individual inquirer. It is an informative and inspiring read." —Don Browning, University of Chicago, and author of Reviving Christian Humanism "Jeff Levin and Stephen Post are the editors of this scholarly collection of eight essays by a group of respected religious scholars on the who, what, when, and where of divine love." —Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and PracticeTable of Contents Foreword / ix Seyyed Hossein Nasr Acknowledgments / xiii Introduction: Divine Love in the World’s Religious Traditions / 3 Jeff Levin 1: “If God Did Not Love Me, God Would Not Have Made Me!”: Exploring Divine Love in African Religion / 23 John S. • America's Blessings: How Religion Benefits

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. America's Blessings: How Religion Benefits

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis A few years ago, a debate between atheists and religious believers spilled out from the halls of academia and the pews of America’s churches and into the public spotlight. A crop of atheist manifestos led the charge, surmounting and holding the tops of the nonfiction bestseller lists. This debate brought on an outpouring of religious rebuttals as both sides exchanged spirited volleys, accusations were leveled; myths, stereotypes, and strawmen arguments were perpetuated; and bitter hostility filled the air. Today many of these misconceptions and myths linger on, along with the generally acrimonious spirit of the debate. In America’s Blessings, distinguished researcher Rodney Stark seeks to clear the air of this hostility and debunk many of the debate’s most widely perpetuated misconceptions by drawing from an expansive pool of sociological findings. Stark rises above the fray and focuses exclusively on facts by examining the measurable effects of religious faith and practice on American society. His results may surprise many atheists and believers alike. Starting with a historical overview, Stark traces America’s religious roots from the country’s founding to the present day, showing that religiosity in America has never been consistent, static, or monolithic. Interestingly, he finds that religious practice is now more prevalent than ever in America, despite any claims to the contrary. From here, Stark devotes whole chapters to unpacking the latest research on how religion affects the different facets of modern American life, including crime, family life, sexuality, mental and physical health, sophistication, charity, and overall prosperity. The cumulative effect is that when translated into comparisons with western European nations, the United States comes out on top again and again. Thanks in no small part to America’s rich religious culture, the nation has far lower crime rates, much higher levels of charitable giving, better health, stronger marriages, and less suicide, to note only a few of the benefits. In the final chapter, Stark assesses the financial impact of these religious realities. It turns out that belief benefits the American economy—and all 300 million citizens, believers, and nonbelievers alike—by a conservative estimate of $2.6 trillion a year. Despite the atheist outcry against religion, the remarkable conclusion is clear: all Americans, from the most religious among us to our secular neighbors, really ought to count our blessings. Trade Review “America’s Blessings provides a powerful debate on religion’s positives for all and comes from a researcher who considers the lasting impact of faith on American society as a whole. His history focuses on America’s religious roots from its founding to modern times, considering the latest research on how religion affects American life and values and analyzing the financial impact of religion. Belief benefits the American economy – this book outlines all the ways belief enhances life in the country, and is a pick for spirituality collections and general social issues holdings, as well.” —Midwest Book Review, February 2013 “America’s Blessings makes a significant contribution because there are few, if any, works like it. Stark set out to provide a “full accounting of the tangible…benefits of faith” because, given the anti-religion rhetoric prominent in contemporary dialogue, such accounting is sorely needed. Furthermore, Stark is the one to present this comprehensive treatment. He is a respected and accomplished authority on the sociological effects of religion serving on the faculty of one of the most prestigious universities in the land. The book itself wastes no time on platitudes, unfounded assertions, or the purely subjective. It is a serious, carefully researched, well-justified, and impeccably rational defense of the beneficial role of religion in American society.” —Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, Spring 2013 “In America’s Blessings: How Religion Benefits Everyone, Including Atheists, the respected and prolific sociologist Rodney Stark draws several striking conclusions after surveying the relevant data. I summarize a few of them here, but I cannot do justice to Professor Stark’s extraordinarily interesting book, nor the details of his arguments, which I highly recommend. . . . [It] undermines the old accusation that religion is unhealthy and antisocial.” —Daniel Peterson, Desert News. September 28, 2013 “Stark clearly demonstrates the positive impact that religion has on American society.” —Rev. Dan Erickson, The Hibbing Daily Tribune, Hibbing MN, September 21, 2013 “America’s Blessings is another important contribution from Rodney Stark in studying religion. Where influential voices continue to deride, marginalize and misunderstand the impact of religion, particularly Christianity, careful research may give them a reason to pause. Strikingly, Stark concludes his work with a rough but reasonable calculation of the savings to US society each year that are directly attributable to the religiousness of the nation. $2.67 trillion is a figure not to be sniffed at. Economists and pollies take note! Stark acknowledges that not only are these figures inadequate but also they are beside the point. Even if the numbers are close to right, the intangible benefits of American life provided by its religious culture are worth immeasurably more.” — Simon Smart, The Drum Online (ABC News)–May 20, 201 “Well-written, well documented, powerfully persuasive. Even secularists and atheists will be impressed—although some will not want to admit it!” —Steve Forbes “America’s Blessings makes a vital contribution to an underappreciated aspect of American exceptionalism. Stark eloquently shows how religion’s benefits in this unusually religious country fall not just on believers but also on those who profess no religious beliefs if they happen to live near those who do. As a master social scientist, he does not ask us to accept this as an act of faith but provides compelling data about ‘the religious effect’—on crime, charity, health, family life, achievement, education, and more. Despite claims about increasing secularization, religious America is alive and well and, as a result, so is the rest of America.” —Arthur C. Brooks, president, American Enterprise Institute “This careful and well-written book, unsurprisingly coming from the Templeton Press, is based on well-selected samples and professional analysis standards. Its report, ranging across crime, family stability, sexuality, mental and physical health, achievement, and philanthropy, indicates that faith makes a measurable and crucial difference. It is a valuable and courageous study.” —Iain R. Book SynopsisA dedicated advocate for social justice long before the term entered everyday usage, Rabbi Ira Sanders began striving against the Jim Crow system soon after he arrived in Little Rock from New York in 1926. Sanders, who led Little Rock’s Temple B’nai Israel for nearly forty years, was a trained social worker as well as a rabbi and his career as a dynamic religious and community leader in Little Rock spanned the traumas of the Great Depression, World War II and the Holocaust, and the social and racial struggles of the 1950s and 1960s.Just and Righteous Causes—a full biographical study of this bold social-activist rabbi—examines how Sanders expertly navigated the intersections of race, religion, and gender to advocate for a more just society. It joins a growing body of literature about the lives and histories of Southern rabbis, deftly balancing scholarly and narrative tones to provide a personal look into the complicated position of the Southern rabbi and the Jewish community throughout the political struggles of the twentieth-century South.Trade ReviewIn this highly readable and well-researched biography of Ira Sanders, James L. Moses depicts the major contributions made by a hitherto unsung hero of the long civil rights movement. Starting as a young man, but spiraling after witnessing a horrific lynching in 1926, Sanders launched a crusade against segregation highlighted by his stand before the Arkansas legislature against four segregationist laws, his outspoken position during the Little Rock High School crisis, and his commitment to integrated housing. Although his experiences with numerous other social justice reforms established him in his community, as with other Reform rabbis in the South who spoke out, his experience began earlier than most, and the Little Rock environment proved to be generally more moderate than in numerous other southern cities. This book places Sanders in context within his community and relation to the activities—or lack thereof—of other rabbis. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Little Rock, Arkansas, and southern history, the civil rights movement, and southern and American Jewish history." —Mark K. Bauman, editor, Southern Jewish History"An important new biography by James L. Moses, Just and Righteous Causes: Rabbi Ira Sanders and the Fight for Social Justice in Arkansas, meticulously chronicles Sanders’ significant, if largely till now unheralded, role in Southern Jewish history." —Tablet Magazine, January 2019"Historians of Arkansas, civil rights and American Judaism will find Just and Righteous Causes an indispensable addition to the literature." —Melanie K. Welch, Arkansas Review, August 2019"Just and Righteous Causes serves as an accessible and well researched biography of an important Arkansan. … will appeal to casual readers and interested experts alike, even as it adds an important chapter to the histories of Little Rock, southern Jews, and the civil rights movement." —Josh Parshall, Arkansas Historical Quarterly, Summer 2019"With Just and Righteous Causes: Rabbi Ira Sanders and the Fight for Racial and Social Justice in Arkansas, 1926–1963, James L. Moses makes a welcome contribution to the study of mid-twentieth-century southern rabbis who walked a tightrope between discharging their duties as spiritual leaders and responding to wider social justice concerns." —Mary Stanton, The Journal of Southern History, November 2019"Just and Righteous Causes is an excellent look into the life of one of the South’s most prominent social justice and civil rights activists of the twentieth century. It successfully provides the casual reader, as well as scholars, with a valuable resource that helps shed light on not only Sanders’s life but the period as well." —Seth A. • Power Of Prayer Around The World

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. Power Of Prayer Around The World

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisUniversally, the power of prayer has been recognized by many cultures for immeasurable time. Whether it be a part of a formal service recited with a congregation of worshipers or an individual, quiet moment, prayer is part of the lives of people from a variety of religions. There seems to be an innate urge among humanity to connect with a higher source of energy and love when we need guidance or direction, and this is called prayer. By reading the prayers from religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, from cultures in Africa, India, Egypt, and China, we begin to share the sense of a common experience. The deepest inner feelings and longings are similar—concern for family, assistance in healing, a longing for peace, or a wish for greater wisdom. For some people, prayer can be thought of as a way to ask for specific goals or special favors. This type of prayer may or may not be effective. Another type of prayer exists when all selfish desire is put aside and we feel ourselves in communion with God. At this point, our greatest wish is that God's will be done. There may be pressing concerns that make us turn our sights upward, but we learn to let go of the end result. At this point, prayer becomes a way of opening up to the universal, loving, creative energy that exists and is far greater than any person could imagine. This is the source of miracles, of faith and unconditional love. Prayer then becomes more than a means to an end; it becomes a state of humility and of awe. It can exist whether we are washing the floor or composing a symphony. Prayer is communion with the Divine, a universal loving creative force that exists in a variety of ways for people around the world. This book brings together an inspirational collection of prayer suitable for all ages and traditions. In addition, it offers insight and guidance about the nature of prayer that will be useful for the serious seeker.

  • Natural Law Religion Rights

St Augustine's Press Natural Law Religion Rights

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book discusses some of those ethical and political questions that puzzled several of the great minds of the twentieth century, such as Leo Strauss, Eric Voegelin, Jaques Maritain, and John Finnis: the question of natural law and its relationship to a teaching of individual freedom and rights. The main aim of the book is to enterpret anew the relationship between law and rights in Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, two important founders of modern rights doctrines. But in order to put their teachings into the right perspective, Syse portrays and discusses other models of law and rights, form Aristotle, through Thomas Aquinas, to John Duns Scotus and William of Ockham, with detours to the teachings of Plato, Cicero and Augustine. Throughout the discussion, the role of religion and revelation is given centre stage as a complex, yet fascinating picture of the relationship between natural law, religion, and rights emerges - one which is neither as simple nor as complicated as often imagined. 'Natural Law, Religion, and Rights' should be of interest both to students struggling with the meaning and contents of the natural law tradition, as well as to teachers and researchers working on the many-faceted problems of natural law and natural rights.

Book SynopsisIt has long been taken for granted that anthropology can no longer be developed in the footsteps of Cartesian substance dualism. His key words come up sooner or later in almost every discussion about people, but only in the sense that one has to get beyond them. A new paradigm is lacking from humans today, and it is not certain whether such a paradigm would be welcomed by all scientists at all. However, wherever the search for a new definition of the relationship between body, body, soul and spirit takes place, the Cartesian terms and the highly controversial variants of substance dualism continue to be in the background, even if only to try to free oneself from it . This volume deals with the question of how, within the framework of a non-dualistic anthropology, the relationship between brain and consciousness can be determined in such a way that there is no reductionist theory of mind in which consciousness has no influence on behavior.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe central question of this book is whether Jesus' resurrection is a religious metaphor or a bodily reality. What does Matthew focus on when telling the story of Jesus' death, the empty tomb, and the appearance to the disciples? A great variety of questions comes up for review: How does Matthew interpret the concept of resurrection and how does his picture of Jesus' resurrection chime in with other concerns in his gospel? How does the story of God raising Jesus from the dead fit in with (other) historical facts? Does Matthew perceive Jesus' resurrection as an event in which the body is also involved? Is resurrection more than a continuation of our temporal existence ' more than a coming back to a life identical to our present life? These and other questions are dealt with in twelve papers written by distinguished scholars from across the globe. The volume is divided into two major sections. The first section deals with the variety and development of ideas and beliefs about the afterlife. It studies the relationship between Matthew's understanding of a post-mortem existence and interpretations of that phenomenon in the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint, Greco-Roman writings, early Jewish and early Christian literature. The second section moves from the broad topics to specific textual units in Matthew about resurrection, immortality, afterlife and eternal life. Various relevant texts are singled out for particular study. This volume is dedicated to Professor Wim Weren on the occasion of his retirement from the Tilburg chair of New Testament Exegesis in the School of Humanities.

  • Peeters Publishers A Greek-Hebrew/Aramaic Two-way Index to the

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPart I of this two-way index for the Septuagint shows which Hebrew/Aramaic word or words corresponds or correspond to a given Greek word in the Septuagint and how many times such an equation applies. This information was provided to a certain extent in the author's two earlier editions of the Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint (Leuven: Peeters, 1993, 2002). In its latest edition covering now the entire Septuagint, A Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint (Leuven: Peeters, 2009), this information has been totally deleted, and is presented here in its entirety. Part II enables scholars to see at a glance what Greek words were used by the Septuagint translators to translate the Hebrew and Aramaic words occurring in the Old Testament. This is an entirely revised version of the author's Hebrew/Aramaic Index to the Septuagint Keyed to the Hatch-Redpath Concordance (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Books, 1998), now out of print. This replaced a Hebrew Index printed as an appendix to the Hatch-Redpath Concordance, which only gave page references of the Concordance for each Hebrew/Aramaic word. In order to find actual Greek words used to translate a given Hebrew/Aramaic word one had to leaf through the concordance itself. This is not a mere reprint of the 1998 Index. Both parts of this Index are based on an extensive, critical review of the data as presented in the Hatch-Redpath concordance. Moreover, it incorporates data totally left out of account by Hatch-Redpath such as the apocryphal book of 1Esdras and includes Dead Sea biblical manuscripts, not only manuscripts of the canonical books, but also an apocryphal book such as the Aramaic fragments of Tobit. Furthermore, the Index, just as the author's Lexicon, took into account data found in the alternative versions of books such as Daniel, Esther and Tobit, and the so-called Antiochene or Proto-Lucianic version of the books such as Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. The Index would be a valuable instrument for not only Septuagint specialists, but also scholars interested in Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic philology, the textual criticism of the Old Testament, and New Testament scholars. This is an essential companion volume for users of Hatch-Redpath's Concordance and the author's Septuagint Lexicon.

Christian Focus Publications Ltd The Mother Who Seeks After God

Book SynopsisMothers today are told that they "can have it all", yet there is very little time devoted in glossy magazines for developing a spiritual side to that busy life.It is hard growing up in a society that thinks that spirituality can be satisfied with an expensive holiday, a great wardrobe and lots and lots of stuff!Laura Martin knows what it is to be busy but she also knows that true achievement only happens when our lives are in balance.By reading through these reflections each day you, too, can discover that some of life's answers are not what you expect them to be!Each daily meditation includes other Scripture texts for further reading and reflective points to invigorate your day.Trade Review"How can a mother be busy and godly? By being rooted in the Word of God, and by praying through the different challenges and pressures daily life brings. Laura Martin provides one month of daily devotions, based on thirty character traits to be sought after by Christian mothers. • Richard Baxter And Conversion

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Richard Baxter And Conversion

Book Synopsis"...If you be not converted, you are not true Christians. You may have the name, but you have not the nature."Richard Baxter, A Treatise of Conversion 1657. Puritan religious experience was centered on conversion, the 'new birth' of the soul - the essence of Puritanism.Tim Beougher forensically dissects Baxter's writings and life so that we see how he constructs a 'systematic theology of conversion'. How relevant this is becomes clear as Beougher investigates how Baxter speaks to us today about controversies on justification, church discipline and the sacraments.Baxter was, arguably, the greatest of the Puritan pastors, over the period of his ministry in Kidderminster he had every person in his town to his house to enquire of their spiritual state. It was central to his care for his 'flock'.In an era where authentic belonging is sought, but rarely found, Baxter can speak to us today just as effectively through this study by Tim Beougher.Trade ReviewThis book echoes the high call from the 17th century to pray and work for conversions with evangelism our top priority. -- Evangelicals Now"The publication of Beougher's important book confirms that Baxter was a fresh and independent thinker who wrestled first-hand with the scriptures. Baxter's theology was aimed at the strengthening of the church and the conversion of the lost, and his passion for truth reverberates throughout the work. We can be thankful for Beougher's wonderfully clear and perceptive analysis of Baxter's theology of conversion. Beougher dispels some misunderstandings of Baxter's theology, reminding us that the study of church history has immense practical benefits, for Baxter comments on many of the debates that we still face today. I commend this work enthusiastically." -- Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)"Timothy Beougher's study of Richard Baxter offers a fresh interpretation of a very important early 'evangelical.' Baxter's advocacy of 'mere Christianity' was important in the contentious milieu of seventeenth-century England, and as Beougher shows persuasively it remains important in the midst of our contemporary contentions as well." -- Mark A. Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana (Author of ‘America’s Book: The Rise and Decline of a Bible Civilization, 1794–1911’)"It is high time for this generation to know Richard Baxter -- the famed pastor of Kidderminster. Timothy Beougher has written a fine study of the great Puritan pastor. Baxter on Conversion is a fine work of Christian scholarship. Beougher simultaneously introduces Baxter to a new generation and sets the record straight concerning some of the controversies that marked Baxter's ministry and enduring reputation. The question of genuine conversion to Christ was a preoccupation of the Puritans -- and for good reason. Our own generation of Christians would do well to follow Baxter's example and think about the meaning of conversion and its true signs. Professor Beougher combines scholarship and evangelistic passion in this important book, setting the record straight and raising all the right questions. If we misunderstand conversion, we misunderstand the Gospel. We are in Professor Beougher's debt for this timely book." -- R Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)"We are indebted to Timothy Beougher for providing a rich historical and theological study of Christian conversion through the lens of the great 17th century Puritan pastor and theologian, Richard Baxter. Few in the history of the church cared so much, studied so much, and wrote so much about conversion as Baxter, and Beougher offers here both a well-documented and eminently readable account of Baxter's deep and nuanced thought. I highly recommend this book, both for the fascinating discussion of theological themes of central importance to the Puritans and to all thoughtful Christians, and for the profound richness to mind and soul that comes through considering afresh the nature and process of true Christian conversion." -- Bruce Ware, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky & author of ‘Big Truths for Young Hearts’)Richard Baxter believed that a faithful system of theology, when created by a skillful hand, would not add to the Scriptures, but merely draw out what is already there. Richard Baxter and Conversion reveals that Timothy Beougher is just such a skillful hand with respect to Baxter's writings. He has drawn out of this classic and controversial Puritan's writings the theological and practical strengths and weakness that are there, and in the process clarified the historic controversies that have surrounded this great Puritan pastor's doctrine of conversion. -- Peter A.
