Book SynopsisLou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937) begegnete zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zwei bedeutenden Protagonisten sehr unterschiedlicher Geistesströmungen, die sich der Erforschung von subjektiven Innenwelten widmeten: Sigmund Freud mit seiner neuen Wissenschaft der Psychoanalyse und Rainer Maria Rilke mit seiner Philosophie eines Innerlichkeitskosmos. Von beiden Gedankenwelten zutiefst berëhrt, entwickelte Lou Andreas-Salomé eine eigene Synthese. Anders als Freud, fër den das Unbewusste als ein Reservoir fër Verdrängtes und somit potenziell Pathologisches galt, betrachtete Andreas-Salomé gerade diese Innenanteile als Quelle fër Kreativität und Weiterentwicklung. Den Trieb verstand sie nicht als etwas den Menschen primär Bedrängendes, dem er ausgeliefert sei, sondern eher als ein Begehren nach dem Anderen, als eine Sehnsucht nach Beziehung. Gerade hierdurch sah Lou Andreas-Salomé intrapsychische Entwicklungsprozesse induziert. Somit ist sie nicht nur als eine Schëlerin Freuds, sondern als eine Weiterdenkerin psychoanalytischen Gedankenguts zu betrachten. Ihre Auffassungen von Beziehung und ihr Einfordern des Intuitiven und Spirituellen als einer erweiterten Dimension des Psychischen finden sich heute aufgegriffen in der Bindungs- und Psychotherapieforschung und auch in der Diskussion um Mentalisierungsprozesse.

On the Protestant side, the Confessing Church was particularly affected: while the "radical" wing organized by the Brothers' Council was to be eliminated by police measures, the Reich Ministry of Churches tried to neutralize the "moderate" wing led by the bishops by decree. At the same time, it became clear that the forces that held Christianity and National Socialism to be incompatible and were planning the annihilation of Christianity and the Church in Germany were gaining increasing influence in the state and party. The fact that these forces could not assert themselves was ultimately only due to Hitler's hesitant attitude. The largely verbatim notes and transcripts of the Bavarian Bishop Hans Meiser from the period from February to December 1937 provide an authentic insight into the discussions and decisions that were under state pressure the most important governing bodies of the episcopal wing, but above all in the efforts to come to common action again in the divided Confessing Church. In addition to the meetings of the conference of the leading non-German-Christian officials of the German Evangelical Churches, the Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany and other bodies, the emergence and the most active working phase of the "Kassel Committee" is extensively documented for the first time.

In Veröffentlichungen der letzten Jahre und Jahrzehnte ist daraus sehr viel mehr als ein Schulstreit geworden. Die Forschung plädiert dafÃ"r, dass der wichtigste epochale Einschnitt in der Geschichte der neueren Philosophie eher bei Duns Scotus als bei Descartes oder Kant liege. Dieses Urteil fordert eine neue Beschäftigung mit der Wirkungsgeschichte der skotistischen Lehre von der Univokation des Seinsbegriffs. Nach erfolgtem Bruch mit dem Supranaturalismus seines Tëbinger Lehrers Storr suchte er eine kritische Religions- und Offenbarungslehre auf kantischer Basis zu entwickeln. In Jena, wo er als Dozent tätig war, trat er mit den großen Geistern seiner Zeit in enge Verbindung. Goethe erteilte er Philosophieunterricht. Nachdem er zusammen mit Fichte in den Atheismusstreit verwickelt worden war, folgte er einem Ruf nach Wërzburg, wo er allerdings nur kurze Zeit wirkte. Die zweite Hälfte seines Lebens verbrachte Niethammer in Mënchen, wo er anfangs als Bildungstheoretiker und -praktiker hervortrat, bis er sich hauptsächlich kirchenorganisatorischen Fragen zuwandte. Niethammer zählt zu den Grëndervätern der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche, die im Jahr 2008 das zweihundertjährige Jubiläum ihres Bestehens feiert.

Book SynopsisThis dissertation intends to situate Cotton Mather in the Early Enlightenment, to add observations concerning his reception in America and to overcome the image of him as a transitional figure. It proposes that especially the sections of his work which are only beginning to be explored show his particular theological position which consists in an enlightened redefinition of the roles of the Holy Spirit. This has repercussions for the content of his faith and his practical and historical belief. Approaching his works in a second step from the perspective of Early Modern Society, it attempts to show the limits of concepts brought to bear on this society, on him and on his works in particular such as the theories of the "errand" in the settlement of New England and its subsequent "decline" in its connection to psychohistory, social history and the history of mentalities. Given the overwhelming importance of the Salem witchcraft trials in the reception of Cotton Mather, further observations on the changing role of the pastorate, familial and societal education and the development of medical and natural sciences take their departure from their examination as an example of early modern phenomena of exclusion. Critical examination of this and other historical and literary, philosophical, sociological and theological concepts which prevented Cotton Mather from being seen as an Enlightenment figure are the main subject of this dissertation.

Was aber steckt hinter der Begrifflichkeit und mit welchen Theorien und Theorieentwicklungen sind wir konfrontiert? Die Beiträge dieses Bandes versuchen dies zu klären und sowohl historische als auch gegenwartsbezogene Zugänge zu entwickeln. Dabei geht es um Säkularisierungsschübe und deren Auslöser in der Geschichte; um die Frage danach, wie Religion und religiöse Praxis in jeweils unterschiedlicher Weise auf Säkularisierungsphänomene reagierten. Denn Tatsache ist, dass die Religion in welcher Ausprägung auch immer nie ganz verdrängt wurde. Karl Barth has pointed out that the loss of Jewish Christianity means an irreplaceable theological and ecclesiastical loss. He points in the direction in which the book project is moving. To this day, it appears as a break with a long memory tradition that this question is chosen as the starting point for a theological disciplinary history, a story that largely resembles a discipline in Israel.
