Book Synopsis`Superb general account.' Times Literary SupplementThe story of the history of Western astrology begins with the philosophers of Greece in the 5th century BC. To the magic and stargazing of Egypt the Greeks addednumerology, geometryand rational thought. The philosophy of Plato and later of the Stoics made astrology respectable, and by the time Ptolemy wrote his textbook the Tetrabiblos, in the second century AD, the main lines of astrological practice as it is known today had already been laid down. In future centuries astrology shifted to Islam only to return to the West in medieval times where it flourished until the shift of ideas during the Renaissance.Trade ReviewA delight to read and an excellent guide through so wide-ranging and complex a subject...superb general account.' The Times Literary Supplement`Lucid, well-informed and concise...stimulates thought and commands respect.' New York Times Book Review`Tester's book because of its breadth and solid textual explications might become the standard historical introduction, in English, to the language of the skies. -- Richard Kremer, SpeculumTable of ContentsFrom the beginnings to Manilius; from Manillius to Vettius Valens; Alexandria to Byzantium - Ptolemy and later Greek astrology; the latin Middle Ages; renaissance and enlightenment - the second death of astrology.

  • Essay on the Life and Manners of Robert

Catholic Record Society Essay on the Life and Manners of Robert

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPhilip Perry's Essay on the Life and Manners of the Venerable Robert Grosseteste presents us not only with a high standard of biographical scholarship but also a fine example of English eighteenth-century polemical writing. Grosseteste was a formidable thirteenth-century bishop of Lincoln who, because of his insistence upon the primacy of Scripture and his apparent wrangling with the papacy, had long been claimed as a type of proto-Protestant in the English post-Reformation historical tradition. Perry sets out in his Essay a vivid account of Grosseteste's life and achievements to advance his cause as a worthy saint and to recover his reputation as a loyal son of the Roman Church. His frank discussion of the abuses that Grosseteste opposed and the controversies in which he engaged put his text beyond the limits of what a Catholic priest could advisably print in eighteenth-century England. The manuscript remained unpublished for fear of causing scandal, and now sees its first printed edition.

  • The Future of Rome

Cambridge University Press The Future of Rome

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow was the future of Rome, both near and distant in time, imagined by different populations living under the Roman Empire? It emerges from this collection of essays by a distinguished international team of scholars that Romans, Greeks, Jews and Christians had strikingly different answers to that question, revealing profound differences in their conceptions of history and historical time, the purpose of history, the meaning of written words and oral traditions. It is also argued that practically no one living under Rome''s rule, including the Romans themselves, did not think about the question in one form or another.Trade Review'Recommended.' A. J. Book SynopsisA groundbreaking cross-sectional study of the forms and extent of gender inequality in the Big Five religions of the world Sexism in Major Religions: A Comparative Introduction provides clear and accessible analyses of the complex forms of androcentrism and patriarchy in five of the world's major religionsHinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. With a unique comparative-thematic methodology, this student-friendly textbook bridges the gap between Religious Studies and courses in Gender and Sexuality Studies, Feminist Studies, Religion and Society, and more. Following a brief introduction to each religious system covered, Sexism in Major Religions defines important terms and concepts in modern religious feminism, including sex and gender, androcentrism and patriarchy, and revolutionary and reform feminisms. Each remaining chapter focuses on one of seven themes representing the main sources and manifestations of religious discrimination against women, such as the gender of the deity, the duties of the mother, and the status of the wife within marriage. Throughout the text, author Paul Gwynne discusses the formal gender-biased teachings and practices, distinctive features, intersecting areas, and core arguments of conservative defenders and feminist critics of each religion. Provides students with deep comparative insight into the similarities and differences between major religions on issues of gender equalityOffers a fresh and original approach to exploring the forms of sexism across seven distinct themesPresents a timely and accurate account of the landscape of sexism in five of the world's largest religionsIncludes a dedicated chapter examining the status of intersex and transgender persons in religious systemsDesigned to broaden students' understanding of religions through systematic and impartial discussion, Sexism in Major Religions: A Comparative Introduction is an ideal textbook for undergraduate courses in Religious Studies and Social Sciences programs, as well as an invaluable resource for general readers interested in understanding and reforming sexist features within religious traditions.Table of ContentsNote on Scriptural Translations and References x Acknowledgements xi List of Figures xii Introduction 1 1 Religions 10 Hinduism 10 Buddhism 16 Judaism 22 Christianity 27 Islam 34 Summary 40 2 Feminisms 44 Sex and Gender 44 Androcentrism and Patriarchy 51 Conservative and Liberal Mindsets 57 Revolutionary and Reform Feminism 62 3 Deity 73 Gods and Goddesses 73 Higher Beings 79 The God of Israel 85 Allah 92 Father, Son and Spirit 97 Summary 104 4 Woman 109 Bad Karma 110 Changing Sex 114 Adam and Hava 119 Daughters of Eve 126 The First Couple 134 Summary 140 5 Founders 146 The Founder of Judaism? 147 Muhammad 153 Buddha Gautama 162 Jesus of Nazareth 170 Summary 179 6 Wife 187 Buddhist Disinterest 187 Pativrata 190 Love, Honour and Obey 198 The Chained Ones 204 A Degree over Them 209 Summary 216 7 Mother 224 The Second Eve 224 A Painful Condition 231 Niddah 236 Pumsavana 244 The Five Woes 249 Summary 254 8 Seductress 262 Witch 262 Tzniut 267 Hijab 273 Apsaras and Ghunghats 280 Mara’s Daughters 285 Summary 290 9 Leader 297 Broken Lineages 297 The Sacred Thread 304 From Exemption to Exclusion 309 The House of Umm Waraqa 318 Christ and the Twelve 324 Summary 333 10 (LGBQ)TI 343 The Third Nature 343 Pandakas 349 The Six Categories 354 Khuntha and Mukhannath 361 The Order of Creation 368 Summary 375 Conclusion 384 Appendix A “The 100 Most Influential People in History” (Michael Hart) 397 Appendix B The 32 Major Marks of a Buddha 399 Appendix C The Ninety-Nine Names of Allah 400 Appendix D The Two Genesis Stories of Creation 403 Select Bibliography 408 Index 414

Book SynopsisOne of America's finest reporters and essayists explores the powerful currents beneath the roiled waters of a nation coming apartTrade Review"A riveting, vividly detailed collage of political and moral derangement in America." -- Joseph O'Neill - The New York Times Book Review"[Sharlet’s] stories are as necessary as they are harrowing. The writing is explicit and expansive, almost cinematic, like looking at a battlefield from above. Altogether, it’s a rare achievement, a cultural-political book that is literary.... [The Undertow] has a narrative arc that captures the fever pitch of the past decade." -- Ann Neumann - The Guardian"[The Undertow] is journalism-as-art, attempting to capture the mood of the nation at this fraught moment, that others in the future may know how it felt to live through the present. Hopefully there will still be readers then." -- Adam Fleming Petty - The Washington Post"[The Undertow] is a foreboding drive through the backroads of the country’s rising militancy. From campy Trump rallies and a memorial service for the January 6 insurrectionist Ashli Babbitt to a televangelist’s church in Miami and a self-declared prophet in Omaha, Sharlet takes a hard, unwavering look at the nation’s guns-and-Bibles underbelly" -- James Sullivan - The Boston Globe"Sharlet's startling, Didion-esque The Undertow, with its CinemaScope landscapes and slightest of hopes, visits the dirt lanes and country rallies where Christian nationalism threatens. Book SynopsisInterweaving academic theory, (auto)ethnography, and memoir-styled narrative, Christopher M. Driscoll explores what the white devil trope means for understanding and responding to tensions emerging from toxic white masculinity. The book provides a historical and philosophical account of the white devil as it appears in the stories and myths of various black religious and philosophical traditions, particularly as these traditions are expressed through the contemporary cultural expression of hip-hop. Driscoll argues that the trope of the white devil emerges from a self-hatred in many white men that is concealed (and revealed) through various defence mechanisms principally, anger and the book provides rich ground to discuss the relationship between perceptions of self (i.e. who we are), emotional regulation, and our behaviour towards others (i.e. how we act).Trade ReviewThis book is a gift for this time in history, an essential read for people who want to build communities to counter white racism and nurture expansive, generative interdependence. The analysis of harms done is rigorous and compelling, and the depiction of paths forward for genuine reparations and systemic justice are original, evocative, and catalytic. * Sharon D. Welch, Author of After the Protests Are Heard: Enacting Civic Engagement and Social Transformation (2019). *As an incredibly rare work in its honesty, transparency, and depth, Christopher M. Driscoll's White Devils, Black Godsis an excellent contribution to the emerging nexus in scholarship on religio-racial identity, gender politics, and hip hop music and culture. * Juan M.
