Book SynopsisWhy do authoritarian regimes survive? How do dictators fail? What role do political institutions play in these two processes? Many of the answers to these questions can be traced to the same source: the interaction between institutions and preferences. Using Egypt as a case study, Professor Mahmoud Hamad describes how the synergy between judges and generals created the environment for the present government and a delicate balance for its survival. The history of modern Egypt is one of the struggle between authoritarian governments, and forces that advocate for more democratic rights. While the military has provided dictatorial leaders, the judiciary provides judges who have the power to either support or stymie authoritarian power. Judges and Generals in the Making of Modern Egypt provides a historically grounded explanation for the rise and demise of authoritarianism, and is one of the first studies of Egypt''s judicial institutions within a single analytical framework.Trade Review'Mahmoud Hamad's Judges and Generals in the Making of Modern Egypt constitutes a well-told and well-argued story of how political institutions, especially courts whose independence should define their function, can be manipulated and coopted by autocratic forces. This insightful analysis provides a road map for comprehending the power of courts to legitimize authoritarian regimes and the limits of judicial empowerment.' Mary L. Volcansek, Executive Director, Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University'The book is a fascinating account of the role of the judiciary in modern Egyptian politics. As well as being of interest to those wanting to understand more about the particular history of the judiciary in Egypt, Judges and Generals in the Making of Modern Egypt provides more generalizable insights into the ways in which a degree of judicial independence can lend credibility to non-democratic governments. In particular it persuasively argues that the judiciary can be useful for an autocratic regime in providing an institutional foundation as a base for its longer-term survival. This book is an important point of reference for anyone interested in the relationship between judges and politicians in the context of non-democratic regimes.' • Cambridge University Press Political Leadership in Africa

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDo political leaders matter for development in Africa? Political leaders south of the Sahara have taken centre stage since countries in the region gained independence in the 1960s, yet a ''leadership trap'' soon emerged with power-holders overstaying in office and chronic instability caused by coups resulting in decades of disappointing developmental performances. The beginnings of change are found in political reforms of the early 1990s, with many sub-Saharan countries introducing multiparty elections and an increasingly regular succession of leaders. But what impact did the new mechanisms for selecting leaders have on the political stabilization of African states, on the growth of their economies, and on the welfare of ordinary citizens? Drawing on a new dataset called the Africa Leadership Change (ALC), this innovative analysis of political leadership in Africa investigates the distinct leadership dynamics of development processes across the region from 1960 to 2018, revealing how, Trade Review'The end of the Cold War set off a worldwide wave of democratization whose effects are still being catalogued and analyzed. How have Africa's new arrangements for choosing rulers, checking their power, and removing them by the will of the majority worked out? This study is sure to be the go-to source for answers to these questions, analyzing how the acquisition and distribution of power has evolved under Africa's new multiparty regimes - the accompanying online database is an invaluable resource for students and scholars wanting to gather additional facts on particular African rulers.' Arthur A. Goldsmith, Emeritus Professor, University of Massachusetts, Boston'Carbone and Pellegata provide a powerful study on how leaders impact the success and failures of their countries in sub-Saharan Africa and how they reach power influences their behaviour and what they do too. Political Leadership in Africa is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the impact of leadership on democracy and development in sub-Saharan Africa today.' Alex Vines, Coventry University and Head of the Africa Programme, Chatham House'… empirically accomplished, well-researched study … this is an extremely impressive scholarly work … Highly recommended. • Cambridge University Press Democracy at Work

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOne of the greatest challenges in the twenty-first century is to address large, deep, and historic deficits in human development. Democracy at Work explores a crucial question: how does democracy, with all of its messy, contested, and, time-consuming features, advance well-being and improve citizens'' lives? Professors Brian Wampler, Natasha Borges Sugiyama, and Michael Touchton argue that differences in the local robustness of three democratic pathways - participatory institutions, rights-based social programs, and inclusive state capacity - best explain the variation in how democratic governments improve well-being. Using novel data from Brazil and innovative analytic techniques, the authors show that participatory institutions permit citizens to express voice and exercise vote, inclusive social programs promote citizenship rights and access to public resources, and more capable local states use public resources according to democratic principles of rights protections and equal accesTrade Review'This important book documents the existence of a significant 'democracy advantage' in the form of Brazilian municipalities that have been able to improve a number of key social indicators by expanding participatory institutions, adopting rights-based social programs, and building local state capacity. Given the multiple crises that have beset Brazil's national-level politics in recent years, the publication of Democracy at Work is especially timely as a reminder that local actors can construct their own pathways to well-being.' Kent Eaton, University of California, Santa Cruz'Democracy at Work convincingly demonstrates that 'thicker democracy' really does improve social outcomes. The authors deploy the analytical leverage of the subnational comparative method, grounded in extraordinary empirical evidence, to show both the independent and interactive effects of participatory public institutions, inclusive safety nets and capable local governments.' Jonathan Fox, Accountability Research Center, School of International Service, American University'Democracy at Work is an impressive, even exemplary, piece of scholarship.' Jared Abbott and Benjamin Goldfrank, Comparative Politics'Wampler, Sugiyama, and Touchton's exciting book Democracy at Work promises a deep dive into the black box of democracy with all of its 'messy, contested, and time-consuming features' … Democracy at Work is sure to become essential reading for any student of participatory democracy and developmental studies, as well as anyone seeking to understand the micro-level pathways that cultivate well-being beyond the broad stroke of economic growth and regime type.' Australian Scholarly Publishing Northern Dreams: The Politics of Northern Development in Australia

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNorthern Australia is rediscovered by each new generation of Australian politicians. Dams, mines, large transport projects, a food bowl for Asia and many other projects are promised and sometimes delivered, but then the political momentum fades away and the focus of attention turns to other issues. What is often missing in discussion is the region’s long history of nation-building initiatives and proposals, stretching back to 1901. Without this knowledge we are likely to repeat the mistakes of the past.Northern Dreams brings to life the passionate arguments about Northern Australia’s national significance and analyses the political debates that have periodically drawn the public’s attention northwards. It also highlights the role that Australian politicians such as Gough Whitlam, Ben Chifley, Robert Menzies and Bob Hawke played in shaping northern development policies to suit their times. Northern Dreams is the definitive history of the politics of northern development in Australia.

Book SynopsisWe are constantly growing older, and there are an increasing number of elderly people living with dementia who are merely being "taken care of". There is no question that we need alternatives to the established procedures. What can we do to create spaces where we can stay in life - rather than just staying alive? How can we turn the individual environments of people with and without dementia into "places of human warmth"?In Germany, initiatives attempting to answer these questions are on the rise: Committed individuals from politics, art, churches, social and volunteer work etc. are creatively working towards dementia-friendly communities. In this book, three authors, intimately familiar with the topic, explore initial movements, obstacles, and first approaches.

Book SynopsisThe implementation of the Marshall Plan in Denmark gave rise to serious conflicts between the Social Democratic government and the opposition -- and between the government and the business community. Vibeke Sørensen portrays the deep disagreement that existed regarding Danish economic policy in the post-war period, analysing also how this political disagreement characterised the Danish implementation of the plan. On the basis of thorough source studies, Sørensen questions the up until now appreciatory evaluation of the importance of the Marshall Plan for the Danish society. On one hand, the implementation played a role in initiating structural changes in the Danish economy, with the plan itself complementing the social democratic reconstruction policy during the first few post-war years. On the other hand, the social democratic government failed in its effort to create consensus regarding more stringent control of economic policy and recognition of the necessity of an industrialisation policy. As a result, the Marshall Plan had only limited success in Denmark.

Manohar Publishers and Distributors Understanding Governance in South Asia

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe concept of good governance in South Asia poses a challenge at the implementation level, mainly due to ethnocentricity, regional disparities, division between poor and rich, and rural and urban division among the people. Concepts such as decentralization, citizen engagement, lean public service, privatization, autonomy, public-private partnership may work well in developed countries but may not produce the same results in the region where the majority of poor people expect their government to fulfill their basic needs. Governance in South Asia needs to be reformed to ensure that poverty can be reduced, if not completely eradicated. Poor governance and the various means by which governance has fallen short, has led to lack of development and continuance of poverty in South Asian societies. South Asian countries have more or less similar objectives, structures, value systems, cultures, and standards of governance despite different forms of government.

Book SynopsisThe Oxford Handbook of Local and Regional Democracy in Europe analyses the state of play of democracy at the subnational level in the 27 member states of the EU plus Norway and Switzerland. It places subnational democracy in the context of the distinctive Anglo, the French, the German, and Scandinavian state traditions in Europe asking to what extent these are still relevant today. The Handbook adapts Lijphart''s theory of democracy and applies it to the subnational levels in all the country chapters. A key theoretical issue is whether subnational (regional and local) democracy is derived from national democracy or whether it is legitimate in its own right. Besides these theoretical concerns it focuses on the practice of democracy: the roles of political parties and interest groups and also how subnational political institutions relate to the ordinary citizen. This can take the form of local referendums or other mechanisms of participation. The Handbook reveals a wide variety of practiTable of ContentsPART I THE BRITISH ISLES; PART II THE RHINELANDIC STATES; PART III THE NORDIC STATES; PART IV THE SOUTHERN EUROPEAN STATES; PART V THE NEW DEMOCRACIES; PART VI CONCLUSIONS
