  • Party Brands in Crisis

Cambridge University Press Party Brands in Crisis

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy would national political parties that have been competitive for decades collapse overnight? Party Brands in Crisis offers an explanation that highlights the impact of elite actions on voter behavior. This study is aimed at scholars interested in voter partisanship, political behavior, Latin American politics, political parties, and elite polarization.Trade Review'Why do established parties sometimes dramatically collapse, often within a single electoral cycle? Lupu's persuasive answer is that such collapse occurs when parties switch positions, make unholy alliances with former adversaries, and converge on the policy positions of their opponents in order to attract floating voters and win the next election. When leaders thus 'dilute the party brand', parties hemorrhage partisans and are in turn left defenseless against the wrath of the electorate in hard times. Party Brands in Crisis challenges the way we think about partisanship and deserves to be read by students of political parties everywhere.' Frances Hagopian, Harvard University, Massachusetts'Why do long-lasting parties collapse? In answering this question Lupu demonstrates how, as the result of strategic decisions made by the party elite, party brands can become diluted and voter attachments to parties can become attenuated. This is a book every scholar of parties will want to read. It promises to help reshape the way we think and talk about party labels and partisan loyalty.' Allen Hicken, University of Michigan'Party Brands in Crisis may be the most important book on Latin American parties published in a generation. It offers a compelling theory - and an impressive array of evidence - to explain why many established parties have weakened or collapsed in Latin America over the last quarter century. In so doing, it highlights a crucial consequence of the region's programmatic convergence during the 1990s: parties that embraced the Washington Consensus diluted their brands and, consequently, ceased to stand for anything in the eyes of their supporters. Party Brands in Crisis is destined to become a classic work in the literature on political parties. It will be a must-read not only for scholars of Latin American politics but for anyone interested in political parties.' Steven Levitsky, Harvard University, Massachusetts'Lupu provides here a very significant contribution to the literature on political parties, and especially to our understanding of Latin American politics. He develops a novel and insightful theory about party brands and their erosion based on ideological convergence and negative performance. He tests the implications of his theory making an impressive use of multiple methodologies to explain party breakdown in Latin America. Moreover, the implications of his study go beyond the region as suggested by his exploration of the relationship between polarization and party brands. In sum, this book is most likely to generate a new research agenda for the study of political parties, which will have a long-lasting effect on the discipline.' M. Victoria Murillo, Columbia University, New YorkTable of Contents1. Why do parties break down?; 2. Brand dilution and party breakdown; 3. Explaining party breakdown across Latin America; 4. Cambridge University Press A MiddleQuality Institutional Trap

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisLatin America is currently caught in a middle-quality institutional trap, combining flawed democracies and low-to-medium capacity States. Yet, contrary to conventional wisdom, the sequence of development - Latin America has democratized before building capable States - does not explain the region''s quandary. States can make democracy, but so too can democracy make States. Thus, the starting point of political developments is less important than whether the State-democracy relationship is a virtuous cycle, triggering causal mechanisms that reinforce each other. However, the State-democracy interaction generates a virtuous cycle only under certain macroconditions. In Latin America, the State-democracy interaction has not generated a virtuous cycle: problems regarding the State prevent full democratization and problems of democracy prevent the development of state capacity. Moreover, multiple macroconditions provide a foundation for this distinctive pattern of State-democracy interactionTable of Contents1. A Research Agenda and Strategy; 2. The State-Democracy Interaction; 3 Paths and Outcomes; 4. Mechanisms and Outcomes; 5. Macroconditions of the State-Democracy Interaction; 6 Concluding Remarks.

Riordan “Nobody thinks of drawin’ the distinction between honest graft and dishonest graft.” This classic work offers the unblushing, unvarnished wit and wisdom of one of the most fascinating figures ever to play the American political game and win. George Washington Plunkitt rose from impoverished beginnings to become ward boss of the Fifteenth Assembly District in New York, a key player in the powerhouse political team of Tammany Hall, and, not incidentally, a millionaire. In a series of utterly frank talks given at his headquarters (Graziano’s bootblack stand outside the New York County Court House), he revealed to a sharp-eared and sympathetic reporter named William L. Riordan the secrets of political success as practiced and perfected by him and fellow Tammany Hall titans. The result is not only a volume that reveals more about

Book SynopsisUnder the welfare reform act of 1996, welfare was the first and most basic safety net program to be sent back to state control. This title examines how the welfare policymaking process has changed. It probes the nature of state welfare politics under devolution and contrasts it with welfare politics on the national level.Trade Review... meticulously researched and elegantly constructed ... an important corrective both to the triumphalism that has overwhelmingly greeted welfare reform and to the suspect theory that lies behind it Political Science Quarterly A refreshing and important contribution ... On behalf of the American Urban Radio Networks, and through her Fabric of America news blog, she delivers her readership and listeners (millions of African Americans and close to 300 radio affiliates) a unique urban and minority perspective in news. Her position as a White House Correspondent has afforded her unique insight into the racial sensitivities, issues, and attendant political struggles of our nation's last three presidents. In Bill Clinton, Ryan saw both a savvy politician who did his best to stay above the racial fray in public, and a man privately pained from the wrongs done to African-Americans tTrade ReviewFrom her Unique vantage point as the White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN), Ryan has had the immense pleasure of witnessing history in the making through three presidential administrations. As an African American woman in a field dominated by white males, however, Ryan has brought a perspective to her coverage that both stems from her personal background and reflects the wider concerns of her urban radio audience. From her days as a rookie reporter in the Clinton White House to her tenure as a veteran journalist during the Obama administration, Ryan analyzes each president's time in office in terms of his commitment to and success in addressing issues that bridge the country's racial divide. Transcripts of press conference Q&As and exclusive interviews provide crucial insight into how each president fared on issues of domestic initiatives, administration diversity, and acknowledgment of racial inequities. Forthright and formidable, open and appreciative, Ryan delivers a no-holds-barred evaluation of the country's chief executives on matters of race and equality. * Booklist *[This book] gives readers a compelling behind-the-scenes look at race relations from the epicenter of American power and policy making—the White House—April Ryan’s beat since 1997. Ryan tells us what it was like for a pioneering African American female reporter to become a respected member of the White House Press Corps, one of the greatest old boy networks in the nation’s capital. . . .With humor, grace, and determination, Ryan shares the highs and lows of a sometimes lonely battle, to keep questions of race and the lives of her inner-city listeners on the national stage. * African American Literature Book Club *April Ryan has taken the mystery out of the White House. She tells the story in black and white. This is a rare story, but more importantly a story about America. This is a very valuable contribution to the American history zeitgeist, and a story all Americans need to experience. -- Ernest Green, "Little Rock Nine"Despite the bland menu press officers often serve reporters who cover the White House, April Ryan has always been someone who insists on spice. Her questions, sassy probing, and good humor force a predominantly white culture in that most exclusive of places to confront uneasy questions of race, equality, and discrimination. She made the scales fall from my eyes, and her work—reflected in this marvelous volume—will one day change the heart of a president she covers. -- Mike McCurry, White House Press Secretary, 1995–98April Ryan’s long service in the White House press corps has given her an intimate understanding of the value of political leverage, for presidents and the American public alike… The Presidency in Black and White is an important contribution toward achieving that political leverage—that place for us to stand from which we can move our nation toward the society it is meant to become. For that, April Ryan deserves our gratitude and support. -- Hon. Elijah Cummings, United States House of RepresentativesMost people just talk about “being in the room.” April Ryan not only is in the room, but also grabs your attention in a fascinating, personal, and yes, “insider’s” look at The Presidency in Black and White. April brings us inside the Oval Office as she recounts with humor and poignancy her observations and encounters with three American presidents as they have tackled the often slippery and dangerous slopes of race and racism in America. -- Michael Steele, first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee (2009–2011), MSNBC political analystA revealing and important look at the presidency—and the press—by a veteran journalist who’s been on the inside for two decades. With often surprising details that defy the conventional views of the Clinton, Bush, and Obama presidencies, April Ryan takes the reader to state dinners, aboard Air Force One, and into press conferences to explore the role of race in the White House and press corps. -- Steve Thomma, Chief White House Correspondent for McClatchy

Book SynopsisOnce described by The Washington Post as “the most interesting mayor you’ve never heard of", Pete Buttigieg, the thirty-six-year-old Democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has improbably emerged as one of the nation’s most visionary politicians. First elected in 2011, Buttigieg left a successful business career to move back to his hometown, previously tagged by Newsweek as a “dying city”, because the industrial Midwest beckoned as a challenge to the McKinsey-trained Harvard graduate. Whether meeting with city residents on middle-school basketball courts, reclaiming abandoned houses, confronting gun violence, or attracting high-tech industry, Buttigieg has transformed South Bend into a shining model of urban reinvention. While Washington reels with scandal, Shortest Way Home interweaves two once-unthinkable success stories: that of an Afghanistan veteran who came out and found love and acceptance, all while in office, and that of a Rust Belt city so thoroughly transformed that it shatters the way we view America’s so-called flyover country.Trade Review"Personal, beguiling and quite moving as he talks about coming out and getting married… The story is told with brisk engagement — it is difficult not to like him…When Obama wrote his memoir, the idea that the nation would soon put an African-American in the White House seemed beyond the realm of the possible. After reading this memoir written 25 years later, the notion that Buttigieg might be the nation’s first openly gay president doesn’t feel quite as far-fetched." -- Adam Nagourney - The New York Times"In this uplifting coming-of-age memoir from the American heartland, Pete Buttigieg, successful mayor of revitalized South Bend, Indiana, writes that the shortest distance between opportunity and success, ‘like good literature, takes personal lived experience as its starting point’—a promising axiom for a prospective national figure." -- David Levering Lewis

The fact that his New York Times best-selling memoir, Shortest Way Home, didn’t read like your typical campaign book only added to “Mayor Pete’s” transcendent appeal. Readers everywhere, old and young, came to appreciate the “stirring, honest, and often beautiful” (Jill Lepore, New Yorker) personal stories and gripping mayoral tales, which provided, in lyrical prose, the political and philosophical foundations of his historic campaign. Now featuring a new introduction and a “Back Home” afterword, in which Buttigieg movingly returns with the reader to his roots in his hometown city of South Bend, Indiana, as well as a transcript of the eulogy for his father, Joseph Buttigieg, Shortest Way Home, already considered a classic of the political memoir form, provides us with a beacon of hope at a time of social despair and political crisis.Trade Review"Buttigieg’s Shortest Way Home: One Mayor’s Challenge and a Model for America’s Future (Liveright) is the best written of all these books [by 2020 presidential candidates]; it offers the most unembarrassed political hope; and it’s got the best love story.... Buttigieg’s stirring, honest, and often beautiful book is a story of how the people of South Bend rebuilt their Rust Belt city, and made it a better place, and it’s an argument for what it means to answer a calling, and why it’s important to ask, again and again, ‘what each of us owes to the country.'" -- Jill Lepore, The New Yorker"The best American political autobiography since Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father.... Buttigieg writes unusually well for a politician.... Is it too much to imagine that America could elect a gay president? I don’t think so.... Especially a man like this." -- Charles Kaiser, The Guardian"Personal, beguiling and quite moving as he talks about coming out and getting married… The story is told with brisk engagement — it is difficult not to like him…When Obama wrote his memoir, the idea that the nation would soon put an African-American in the White House seemed beyond the realm of the possible. After reading this memoir written 25 years later, the notion that Buttigieg might be the nation’s first openly gay president doesn’t feel quite as far-fetched." -- Adam Nagourney, New York Times"If you were an early Barack Obama supporter a dozen or more years ago, you recall inching forward in your chair whenever he spoke. The words were so clear, the passion so strong, the message of hope so credible…. I suggest you watch the video of Pete Buttigieg at a CNN town hall. If that piques your interest, as it did mine, read his book, Shortest Way Home." -- Peter Funt, USA Today"In a sense, Buttigieg’s book is a kind of antidote to J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy, a story of broken people in a broken place.... This is a comeback story of a place that got hit hard, survived and then began thriving again.... It’s entirely true that a leap from mayor to president has been impossible in the past. But these pages make a pretty good case that city halls just might be better training schools for the presidency than attendance at any five years of congressional hearings combined. " -- E.J. Dionne Jr., Washington Post"Readers will find telling insights into the events that shaped Buttigieg's biggest decisions and share a typical day in the mayor's office; relive Buttigieg's tour of duty in Afghanistan (while he was still acting mayor); and understand his angst over being a young, gay public figure trying to get a date (spoiler alert: there's a happy ending!). First and foremost a great, engaging read, this is also an inspiring story of a millennial making a difference." -- Kathleen McBroom, Booklist [starred review]"Since Buttigieg launched his campaign for the presidency last year, I have read or reread much of what he has written, at Harvard and since. Most notable is his excellent memoir Shortest Way Home, with its lyrical evocations of the Indiana landscape, its vivid account of military life in Afghanistan, its rollicking tales of campaign stops featuring Deep Fried Turkey Testicles and peanut-butter-and-bacon sandwiches dusted with powdered sugar, and its incisive analysis of the rewards and frustrations of life as mayor of a small city…. In one of the most powerful passages in Shortest Way Home, Buttigieg points out that there is no formula for resolving the tradeoffs required in government. Data cannot yield answers to questions about who should suffer, and how much, when competing policies are debated." -- James T. Cloppenberg - Commonweal"[Buttigieg] has an extraordinary story and great insights into the politics of our country." -- David Axelrod"Mika and I have been overwhelmed by the reaction Pete Buttigieg got after being on the show. The only other time in twelve years that we heard from as many people about a guest was after Barack Obama appeared on Morning Joe. " -- Joe Scarborough, MSNBC's Morning Joe"Combining candor and compassion with a brilliant understanding of how government can be more effective, Shortest Way Home demonstrates that Pete Buttigieg is not only a key political figure in his generation, but also an appealing and even funny writer. Far from a conventional politician's book, his work is an important entry in the American political tradition for the twenty-first century." -- Walter Isaacson"Pete Buttigieg has given more to his community and country before his 40th birthday than most of us do over the course of our lives. At every crossroads, he has turned towards service and leveraged his energy and intellect to help his neighbors and fellow citizens. In this book, you will not only learn about what brings Pete home, but what drives him towards his vision of a better, kinder nation." -- Joe Kennedy III"In this uplifting coming-of-age memoir from the American heartland, Pete Buttigieg, successful mayor of revitalized South Bend, Indiana, writes that the shortest distance between opportunity and success, ‘like good literature, takes personal lived experience as its starting point’—a promising axiom for a prospective national figure." -- David Levering Lewis

Book SynopsisTasmania's old-growth forests, its wild, untamed rivers and its remote, rugged mountain peaks are etched in the minds of most Australians but these wilderness areas have been the focus of bitter conflict between government, big business and environmentalists for the past 30 years. Although told mostly from an environmentalist's point of view, this book is a factual record of events. Beginning in the 1970s with the flooding of Lake Pedder, it takes the reader through the heady days of the Franklin River blockade and the more recent battles for Tasmania's old-growth forests, culminating with the controversial proposal for the Gunns pulp mill in the Tamar Valley. Unfolding events reveal something of how politics is done in the island state and why a climate of suspicion and mistrust persists among the various interest groups. These battles also have had ramifications for the whole of Australia. They have played a defining part in the shaping of the Green party as well as The Wilderness Society and The Australian Conservation Foundation. Never before has Tasmania been examined through the prism of conflicting values over wilderness. This approach shows what influence this single issue has had upon Tasmania's recent history.
