C & T Publishing Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern: Fresh Techniques for
Book SynopsisIntroduce yourself to an easy quilt-as-you-go technique that’s creative and expressive. With this method, instead of dealing with precise paper patterns and cutting measurements, fabric gets pieced directly onto small manageable batting blocks. The blocks can then be quilted (not the entire quilt!), whether in large abstract zigzags or small structured stitches. After the blocks have been joined, simply add backing fabric and binding and - voilà - it’s finished! A modern approach to quilting that’s fresh, fun, and simpler than it sounds. Great for moms or anyone with a busy schedule—it’s easy to bring these 13 projects along, so you can pick up where you left off. Go your own way: This method can be used with a pattern or intuitively improvised, creating a wide variety of design options. Save money! Learn how to finish quilts without the use of a longarm professional. Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage, the follow-up book by Jera Brandvig, is now available.Trade ReviewFebruary 2015 This method combines patchwork and quilting together as most of the quilting is worked in small areas. The fabric pieces are sewn directly onto cotton punched wadding which is cut 1½" bigger than the finished block. There is no backing at this stage, only two layers are quilted. The quilted blocks are then trimmed to the correct size. After the blocks are joined together a backing fabric is attached, with minimal quilting, before binding the edges. * Patchwork & Quilting *Table of ContentsIntroduction Getting Started Quilt-as-You-Go Techniques Projects: Solstice Parade Rainy Days Red Square Chief Sealth Queen Ann Steps Reversible Table Runner Pillow Sham Ballard Blocks The Emerald City Cascade Range Portage Bay Triple Shot (Bonus Sampler) Finish it!

Of course my favorite part of the book are all the letters, which gives you a glimpse of what life was like during the 1930s. Overall, I think this a great book to own for quilters or historical buffs alike." --Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer"If you love a good story, making pieced quilts or enjoy creating quilts with a variety of different designs, this is an ideal addition to your bookshelf." --Into Craft"I liked the original Farmer's Wife book but I love this version. Each traditional block has been renamed as either a woman's name or a noun that relates to a woman- like 'Granny'. The blocks vary from relatively simple to complex with a fiendish number of pieces to sew together but they are all beautifully presented in a mix of reproduction fabrics and solids. A range of construction methods are offered. All the blocks have templates and foundation paper piecing options and there are rotary cut options for pieces that can be easily measured." --Very Kerry Berry"In my wildest dreams I would be able to sit down and enjoyably sew this entire book (The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt)." --Very Shannon

This is the ideal book for those new to quilting, looking for in-depth and helpful guidance, or for the more experienced quilter looking to brush up on their skills.Trade ReviewAnother book filled with “top tips and techniques for successful sewing”, this time for quilting. I was instantly intrigued, because this is a book for beginners and improvers, and I haven’t done much quilting and want to learn more. Both patchwork and quilting techniques are covered in here, and the book starts off with what you need, plus a staged guide to various techniques. These include what stitches to use, making up the quilt “sandwich”, and learning about different types of batting and machine feet and caring for quilted items. Interspersed between these chapters are ten projects for quilts of various sizes as well as a table runner, Christmas stocking, placemat and of course bags. Plenty of photographs and lots of handy tips make this a pretty foolproof way to learn these techniques, making what often seems a rather arcane and complex craft seem doable and fun. You can learn traditional methods such as English paper piecing, trapunto and reverse quilting as well as making use of modern innovations such as bag hardware. Stitch using a machine or by hand and use up leftovers from other projects making smaller projects such as a pillowcase or lap quilt. C & T Publishing Double Vision Quilts: Simply Layer Shapes & Color
Book SynopsisLearn how to turn squares and rectangles into circles and ovals with no curved piecing—it’s easy! Use innovative layering, playful patterns, and delightful color choices to create 11 mind-bending quilt projects that’ll have you seeing double. The best-selling author of Strips ‘n Curves shares 3 simple construction methods. With something for every type of quilter, the endless possibilities of this collection will inspire you to see quilting in a whole new light.Trade ReviewDec 16 Louisa L. Smith has a simple premise for this book: creating layered and complex quilts from circles and the negative spaces created by them within a block. In the theoretical section, she explores some of the fundamentals of colour theory and a very useful Proportionate Colour Wheel shows the strength of the primary and secondary colours, recommending how to balance colours in your work. Many of the examples are included later in the book as quilt projects. The quilts are made up of layers of different methods of construction. By building up the circles, the negative space shapes become shapes in their own right. In this way, the quilts created are like optical illusions, with parts popping out into the foreground or fading into the background. By using such simple, limited tools, a great variety of results is gained. By using hand-dyed and printed fabrics in addition to commercial ones, the detail in the quilts is increased. Templates are provided at the back of the book but if you wanted to take a shortcut, cutting dies or patterns on digital cutting machines are usually available. This book has a beautiful gallery of work so there’s enough to keep you interested in the variety of designs or to get you started in tackling your own. * Workshop on the Web *I am absolutely crazy about this book, I don't think I have ever said that about a book before. This book is full of fantastic quilts that look very complicated but are achieved with a simple and easy technique. Once you plan and cut your pieces, the make-up is easy. You'll be able to make visually stunning quilts. Follow the instructions for no curved piecing. There are 11 quilt projects to practice layering, texture, colour and pattern to produce vibrant designs. This book looks at shape, values, colour selection, machine applique, embellishing, finishing and hanging. Apart from the fabulous projects there is also a gallery. I am definitely going to have a go at this, got a few ideas myself. It's certainly a new slant on quilting. The only draw back I can see is that I think it takes even more fabric. My favourite projects are the ones on the front and back cover. Highly recommended. * YarnsandFabrics.co.uk *November 2016 This is a book thsat appealed to my eye first, the rich colours used on the front cover demanded to be looked at more closely. It was almost put down as quickly as I had picked it up when I saw the word 'curved designs' as I am not a great lover of curves, but this book has me itching to try the techniques. Louisa calls her innovative method 'Double Vision' and it consists of clever cutting and layering of fabric to create curves in an easy way. The book is divided into sections, each one explaining the technique in more detail, making recommendations about colours and fabrics and adding stitch and other embellishment, The 11 projects are suited to a more contemporary patterned and coloured fabrics and the quilts are more of an art quilt than a quilt bed so this may not appeal to all. Louisa's double vision method along with the kisses and hugs - all will become clearer if you read the book- started as a doodle made on a car journey. From this simple drawing of circles in squares grew a way of sewing without curves and making stunning art quilts. I am already delving in my stash and thinking of colours I will use in my own double vision quilt. * Popular Patchwork *Table of ContentsIntroduction How it Started HUGs and KISSes The First Quilt Familiar Shapes Are Everywhere Working in a Series The Layered Approach Using Multiple Layers Taking a Cue from M. C & T Publishing Double Wedding Ring Quilts - Traditions Made
Book SynopsisGet ready for new adventures in conventional piecing with celebrated quilter Victoria Findlay Wolfe. Create stunning Double Wedding Ring quilts with breathtaking innovations on the classic pattern. With full-size patterns for 10 quilts, the book will teach you the Double Wedding Ring basics. After you’ve mastered curved foundation piecing, try your hand at Victoria’s unique fabric slashing and “Made-Fabric” methods—it’s easier than you think! You’ll feel liberated as you improvise on her designs, with full instruction for some quilts and others that invite your creative discovery. Read the stories that inspired each of Victoria’s designs, and then take inspiration from the artist at work in her studio, with photography of her creative process and 3 bonus quilts to jumpstart your own art.Trade ReviewVictoria Findlay-Wolfe is a New York-based, award-winning quilter, fabric designer, teacher and author, and the founder of the New York City Metro Area Modern Quilt Guild. She was born and raised on a farm in Minnesota and grew up surrounded by quilts made by her grandmother. In this book, Victoria shares 13 modern versions of Double Wedding Ring quilts (including a Christmas quilt), the stories behind them and the techniques needed to get started. If you love modern takes on traditional quilt designs, don't miss this tome! Down Under Textiles, Issue 172 We already admire our former cover girl's talent and creativity, and just knew we'd love the designs in her new book, but we are gratified to find there's so much more. This is no quick-flip! It's a hearty tome, full of personal, poignant stories. Victoria writes: In this book...we will look at a traditional platform to begin with and see how we can push the limits, place a bit more of ourselves into the quilt, add our story, and push our skills into a new realm, while making personal connections that relate to our past." We can't put it better than that! The book's 13 quilts build upon each other in a way that's clearly explained and invite our creative selves to come out and play, to be challenged, to look at fabric or pattern through the lenses of our own lives and memories. This is creative dynamite, blowing up preconceived ideas of what a pattern should" look like. You need this book in your library, friend! Generation Q Magazine, May/June 2015 Although boasting a fine-arts degree, Wolfe (15 Minutes of Play) writes accessibly about her double wedding ring quilts as if she's jotting bread-and-butter letters. Her words are warm and nostalgic as she remembers arriving in New York City with $200 to her name after practically running from the Minnesota farm of her girlhood. But she found that she never quite left that farm behind, for her quilting grandmother becomes her inspiration. "Everything started with this quilt," she says of "Double Edged Love," a best-of-show winner at the first national conference of the Modern Quilt Guild. Embedded within her breezy reminiscences are solid suggestions for 10 projects: besides "Don't sweat the small stuff," Wolfe offers fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the melons and arcs, as she names parts of the wedding ring patterns, and also additional creative possibilities, laid out like yardage; hints for development of craft; and a list of "ideas carried over" from quilt to quilt. Wolfe is boldly mining her heritage. Publishers Weekly, 11/17/14 Master curved foundation piecing and get inspired by Victoria's original fabric slashing techniques, 13 quilts and glimpses of her studio. -- Quiltmaker Magazine What if? That is the question posed by author and quilt artist Victoria Findlay Wolfe in her book Double Wedding Ring Quilts - Traditions Made Modern: Full-Circle Sketches from Life. What if is the question anyone wanting to strike out on their own and create their own designs should ask themselves. What if I take a traditional block like the Double Wedding ring and cut it into different pieces? What if I create my own fabric from scraps? What if I just change one thing? You may not want to start out making a Double Wedding Ring quilt but you will certainly learn ways to step out of your box with Victoria's "15 Minutes of Play" exercise. I found this book full of creative inspiration...steps you can take to change the way you look at and think of quilt designing. There are 13 projects in the book all working back to the Double Wedding Ring block but all created using different methods for a very modern take on a traditional block. Paper piecing, sewing curves and fabric slashing to create your own "Made-Fabric" are some of the techniques taught in this book. Instructions are clearly written and color photos abound. The included patterns are printed at 100% so no need to resize. You'll find 24 projects and quilts that are light on assembly so you can spend most of your time stitching. A handy troubleshooting guide ensures success every step of the way. After learning how to set up your machine for quilting and gathering the basic tools and notions necessary, simple instructions will show you how to try out the stitching designs provided. These designs work well with the given projects such as various bags, placemats and wall hangings. Machine Quilting Unlimited, November/December 2013 I love the small projects included in the book that incorporate free-motion work. What a brilliant path to practicing stitching skills. Learning to free-motion quilt can be slow going if you're waiting to be good enough before tackling a large project. Doing mindless practice quilt sandwiches gets boring! My favorite thing about Christina's book is her approach to getting us to practice: Small Stitched Projects! Simple construction and good design make the projects perfect for practice. It includes all of the technical know-how needed combined with a game plan for how to get practice time in with something to show at the end of a session. With such limited time to create and sew it's a brilliant approach! 11/4/13 First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting is filled with tips and tricks and all kinds of great information. And to top that off, there's a ton of crazy, great projects to make! happyzombie.com, 11/4/13 This is a totally great beginner's book. At the start, Christina lays out exactly what you need to get started. She walks you through cleaning your sewing machine, and explains about darning presser feet and extension tables and quilting gloves. She also explains the best kinds of thread for free-motion quilting. Turns out, it's not a huge investment to get started on this craft. The next section is all basic techniques for FMQ. This section is beautifully documented, with well-lit, well-staged photos and lots of them. ...And then there are many pages of sample designs to get you inspired to quilt. I'm so impressed with the instructional quality of this book. I'm having trouble articulating this well, but I feel like, as a beginner, this book gives me just enough instruction to get started without overwhelming me. Craftypod.com, 11/18/13 I have to say, I've reviewed lots of free-motion quilting books. Of all the ones I have seen, I rank this one in the top two. The thing I like so much about this one is that it walks you through the stitches and free-motion quilting, and then the author offers some great fun and practical projects that will allow readers to practice those very stitches. Most of the projects are small and are great confidence builders. Can you believe that are 24 projects packed into the book?? Jo's Country Junction, 2/3/14 Ease into the wonderful world of free-motion quilting with a kind and informative teacher who guides you every step of the way. C & T Publishing Color Play: Expanded & Updated • Over 100 New
Book SynopsisHow many of you are held back by fear of colour? Introduce yourself to Joen Wolfrom’s classic guide to creating with color, and watch your colour confidence blossom. Colour Play, second edition is completely updated to make it easier than ever to bring a design to life with well-chosen colours. Joen covers it all, from colour scheme basics to how to use nature’s tricks to create an illusion of depth, reflections, shadows, or highlights. Learn the emotional meanings of colours, their physical effects on people, and much more—all richly illustrated with photos of nature and of beautiful quilts. Trade ReviewDecember 2014 Color Play was originally published in 2000 and this edition has been updated and expanded to include over 100 new quilt photos. This book is a comprehensive study of the colour wheel, starting with a look at pure colour, tints, shades and tones. Examples of quilts which demonstrate each area are accompanied by descriptions of how colour is used and why it is effective. What follows on from that is an exploration of colour plans, from monochromatic, complementary, analogous and split-complementary, with more in between and beyond. Values of colour are explained, as are the descriptions of selected colours and how they make us feel, where they are on the colour wheel and where in the book you can find more information about them. The grand finale is a study of 24 colours in great detail showing different colour schemes that work together with diagrams of quilt blocks to demonstrate. This is a fantastic book which benefits from the update because the wealth of new quilts works so well in its favour. The author relates her observations about colour to quilt schemes, what effects particular colours have on the way they are perceived and how to build up your use of colour by creating a personal ‘Colour Plan’. To have such an extensive array of colours that are explored in such detail is a great way of getting to grips with starting to create colour schemes for work. This is a great book for all textile artists and anyone who feels unable to get to grips with how colours work together. * Workshop On The Web *Table of ContentsContents [chapter title] Dedication Acknowledgments Gallery Chapter 1: Color-A Powerful Tool Chapter 2: Nature's Intuitive Color Sense-5 Plans to Love Chapter 3: Value-Color's Best Friend Chapter 4: Color-The Secret Life of a Color Gallery Chapter 5: Colors Galore-An Up-close View of 24 Glorious Colors Gallery Chapter 6: Captivating Illusions Bibliography Index About the Author

Sally Milner Publishing Pty Ltd Quilt the Beloved Africa
Book SynopsisThe craft of African quilting is a beautifully textured and vibrant art form that bears testimony to the rich and complex nature of the African continent. In this, their third book, doyennes of the discipline Pat Parker and Jenny Williamson delve deepter into what it is that sets this relatively new style quilting apart from the more well-established American and European styles that have dominated quilting circles for hundreds of years. The quilts in Quilt the Beloved Africa are a fantastic mix of colourful fabrics that are the key differentiators of the African style of quilting. Another key feature of the local style of quilting is the use of images drawn from its vibrant flora, fauna, and the faces of its people. With a wonderful gallery of quilts followed by thirteen projects, all with easy step-by-step instructions, templates and wonderful colour photographs of the quilts and the inspirations for the quilts, this book will take you on a quilting adventure through Africa like no other. We hope you enjoy your journey through their third African quilting odyssey – a beautiful palette of textures, colours and patterns that continue to make African quilting a joy to behold!Trade ReviewAug 10 A stunning book with quilts inspired by modern Africa. The first 19 pages show vividly coloured quilts made by the authors. There are instructions for making further 13 quilts and photos of contemporary rural life. The quilts combine piecing and appliqué designs. The templates are of people engaged in everyday activities, lighting fires, fishing, playing football. There are weaving patterns, traditional houses, butterflies and much more. The instructions assume some knowledge of the techniques used. All the quilts are densely quilted, often with shadow quilting. A wonderful collection of beautiful quilts giving us views of African life we rarely see. It is my choice as book of the month. * Patchwork & Quilting *Sept 10 This is the third book by Jenny Williamson and Pat Barker, who have been quilting together and teaching for 25 years. It includes a gallery of gorgeous quilts and accompanying photographs of African scenes, showing the flora, fauna, landscapes and faces of Africa that have inspired their quilts. There are 13 quilt projects and a set of instructions for making two very sweet African dolls. The quilts are characteristically full of colour and vibrancy and tend to include lots of appliqué showing images from nature, African scenes and people. Although there are one or two projects involving simple piecing, which are quite contemporary in nature, the book is probably more suitable for fans of appliqué. The majority of templates need to be enlarged to fit into block sizes which could be a little taxing for novices, but once you are comfortable working out percentages, and have mastered your preferred method of appliqué, you will be making colourful, lively quilts in no time at all. * Popular Patchwork *Table of ContentsSoul Sisters Shall We Begin Quilt Gallery Shifting Sands - Jenny Williamson Can't See the Woods for the Leaves - Jenny Williamson We Believe in Angels - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Zulu Kingdom - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Incantation on Immortality - Terry Pryke Reflections - Pat Parker Afrocentric versus Eurocentric - Paul Schutte Intsizwa (Young Man) and Intombi (Young Woman) - Carol Smith Celebration - Carol Smith On the Fringe - Pat Parker Circles in the Sand - Pat Parker Liberty in Africa - Jenny Williamson Psammobates Geometricus - Shirley Prakke Ndebele Apron - Jenny Williamson Dashing to Durban - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Brilliant Baobab - Carolyn Kode Desert Flowers - Pat Parker Kalahari - Jenny Williamson Village People - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Ekithuleni - Pat Parket Quilts to Make African Alphabet - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker African Christmas - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker All a Flutter - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Elephant Hide - Pat Parker

Each pattern has two or three sizes to ease you into getting smaller and smaller. A bit like Alice in Wonderland! The projects are also graded for skill level. The projects are a delight, I love the thought that has gone into this book. The instructions and diagrams are first class. When you move onto the next level, it's all about making the parts smaller. All in all a fabulous primer on mini quilts and one I am happy to recommend. -- Karen Platt * www.karenplatt.co.uk *There are 35 miniature quilts, each come in three sizes; small 4" - 6" blocks; smaller 3" - 4" blocks and smallest 1 1/8" - 3" blocks. A round single hole stitch plate is recommended plus Microtex 70 needles and 60 wt cotton thread. Short stitches i.e. 15 to the inch, prevent the short seams unravelling. Packed with all the easy-to-follow instructions and friendly sewing tips you expect from Debbie Shore, this book also contains hints and tips for face scrubs, bath salts and more to use with your new projects, or to make a perfect eco-friendly gift. Vegan alternatives are suggested where possible.Trade ReviewGreat ideas and useful hints. This is my first Debbie Shore book, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I love the Christmas stocking bags and repair kit. Great for beginners and many of the patterns would be easy to alter the size and would be suitable to up-cycle fabric you already have. -- Rebecca Orrin * Customer Review *As always, Debbie writes and presents her projects in an easy-to-use format with clear instructions. The book doesn't overwhelm you with lots of jargon and difficult techniques, making it accessible to all levels and abilities, but at the same time it gives you the opportunity to develop your skills by adapting the projects to suit you. There are two things I particularly love about this book. The first are the recipes for the wax coating and face scrub because they are simple and I can't wait to make them. The second thing is Debbie's use of natural eco-friendly fabrics. I would never have thought of using cork for lining, and now can't wait to try it. -- Shani Dukes * Customer Review *Eco-friendly products can carry quite a price tag, but with encouraging words and easy-to-follow instructions, Shore's collection of simple sewing and crafting projects can inspire readers to create their own and reduce, reuse, and recycle, all at the same time. Items here can be used for food (wax wraps, lunch bags, grocery totes), personal care (makeup remover pads, reusable wipes and a way to carry them, face coverings), and other household purposes (gift wrappings, cleaning wipes). Many projects are suitable for absolute beginners, but some, like structured bags with bias trim, are better to build up to. Throughout, Shore emphasises using organic, repurposed, and eco-friendly supplies, and reminds readers that using what they have is just fine, and better than buying new. Only one project requires a printed pattern, and the shape for this is included in the book for easy tracing onto paper. An approachable guide. -- Heather Booth * Booklist *The book contains tips for beginners, information on fabrics, tools, useful stitches and key techniques. There are lots of photos and clearly written instructions for the projects making it ideal for beginners. The tips for natural face scrub, bath salts, stain remover and kitchen spray are a nice addition. Unlike a lot of project books where I only find one or two projects of interest I can see myself working my way through all the projects in this one. I especially like the stocking gift bags which can be resized. A couple of the projects can also be adapted for alternative use, the repair kit case would be ideal for storing small sewing projects and the cutlery wrap could be adapted for pens/brushes etc. An excellent addition to my collection of sewing books. -- Ann Hewison * Customer Review *I have a few Debbie Shore books, all of which I love and this latest addition did not disappoint. The book is suitable for beginners to competent sewers alike and contains lots of hints and tips. Each project (there are 25 in all) has detailed instructions supported by step-by step-pictures. I've already made a set of make up remover wipes and some bowl covers. This book is a great addition to any crafters book collection and I cant wait to make more of the projects. -- Sazzie Jessop * Customer Review *It's never been more important to be mindful of what we consume. Debbie Shore's latest release Sew Eco-Friendly will help you make small meaningful swaps to help reduce waste and live more sustainably with 25 step-by-step projects - you'll be able to replace plastic bags with a sturdy shopping tote bag, trade in gift wrap for stylish fabric wraps and much more. * Crafts Beautiful *I have a couple of Debbie’s books already (purses and bag making books). One of the projects was a really lovely double compartment bag (it's called a wipe bag but you could use it for anything – so it is really nice to have a nice bag project in there, that you could use it as a clutch bag or purse). There is a great variety of projects which is what I liked about the book. There was tips to decorate the shopping bag and I was impressed with her method to dye the fabric. I was pleased to see one of the projects is beeswax wraps, which you can make easily. They are a great replacement for cling film/ tin foil in some cases. There are some fantastic projects such as the food coverings. My mum has now borrowed my copy as she was so impressed. -- Deanna Shellard * Customer Review *Lots of projects, some easy enough for the complete novice, with plenty of tips. Good explanation of 'how to', easy to follow and lots of pictures for the visual learner. Plenty of upcycling/recycling and reusable completed projects. Problem is which project to start first! Definitely recommend for someone who is/would like to become eco friendly. -- Dianne Renneberg * Amazon *Another excellent book from Debbie Shore. Simple instructions and great photos for reference. I think everyone may be getting a foldaway washable bag in the stocking this year. -- Bernadette McGowan * Customer Review *This book covers 25 projects for eco friendly minded people who enjoy sewing small craft projects. I have found the instructions and tips helpful with other projects as well. With each of the projects you are supplied with each of the templates that are required. You are also taken through each of the materials that you will require. You are then taken through the Prework you will need to undertake before sewing the project together. The Nutcracker Penny Rug is my absolute favorite. I may not get mine finished for this Christmas but I can't wait to show it off next year. I love this book, I love the designs and the projects are so special you won't think twice about giving them as gifts to family and friends. I bet your friends and family will be shocked when they realised you have made them. This book is a must have!! http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/2015/12/gorgeous-wool-applique-c-t-publishing.html -- Crochet Addict UKTable of ContentsIntroduction: The Basics Section One: Preparing For Success - The Techniques Pre-Work Appliqueing with Felted Wool Making Pennies Section Two: The Table Rugs Harvest Penny Rug Heartsease Nutcracker Penny Rug Section Three: The Pillows Swirling Tulips Jacobean Celtic Charm Section Four: The Smalls Buttercup Pincushion Flowers From My Beau Section Five: Stitching Glossary
