Lucky Spool Media Walk: Master Machine Quilting with Your Walking
Book SynopsisQuilters love the look of textural, detailed stitching that adds to the beauty of the quilt top design. This stitching is actually the “quilting” in quilting, and many quilters feel that paying a professional for machine quilting is one of their only options. The walking foot is an accessory for sewing machines that’s often used for machine quilting, but many quilters only use it to stitch around their designs. But the walking foot can do so much more, and author Jacquie Gering shows all of her tips, tricks and techniques to master all of the skills needed to quilt with a walking foot. This book cover the basics of using the walking foot, in addition to preparing the quilt, marking, managing large quilts, preventing puckers and keeping lines straight. Chapters include a variety of types of walking-foot quilting, including channel quilting, matchstick quilting, and decorative stitch quilting. Quilters won’t be limited to straight line quilting, either! They’ll learn how to quilt spirals, simple curves, and and marked curves like braids and clamshells.

C & T Publishing Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern: Fresh Techniques for
Book SynopsisIntroduce yourself to an easy quilt-as-you-go technique that’s creative and expressive. With this method, instead of dealing with precise paper patterns and cutting measurements, fabric gets pieced directly onto small manageable batting blocks. The blocks can then be quilted (not the entire quilt!), whether in large abstract zigzags or small structured stitches. After the blocks have been joined, simply add backing fabric and binding and - voilà - it’s finished! A modern approach to quilting that’s fresh, fun, and simpler than it sounds. Great for moms or anyone with a busy schedule—it’s easy to bring these 13 projects along, so you can pick up where you left off. Go your own way: This method can be used with a pattern or intuitively improvised, creating a wide variety of design options. Save money! Learn how to finish quilts without the use of a longarm professional. Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage, the follow-up book by Jera Brandvig, is now available.Trade ReviewFebruary 2015 This method combines patchwork and quilting together as most of the quilting is worked in small areas. The fabric pieces are sewn directly onto cotton punched wadding which is cut 1½" bigger than the finished block. There is no backing at this stage, only two layers are quilted. The quilted blocks are then trimmed to the correct size. After the blocks are joined together a backing fabric is attached, with minimal quilting, before binding the edges. * Patchwork & Quilting *Table of ContentsIntroduction Getting Started Quilt-as-You-Go Techniques Projects: Solstice Parade Rainy Days Red Square Chief Sealth Queen Ann Steps Reversible Table Runner Pillow Sham Ballard Blocks The Emerald City Cascade Range Portage Bay Triple Shot (Bonus Sampler) Finish it!

Of course my favorite part of the book are all the letters, which gives you a glimpse of what life was like during the 1930s. Overall, I think this a great book to own for quilters or historical buffs alike." --Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer"If you love a good story, making pieced quilts or enjoy creating quilts with a variety of different designs, this is an ideal addition to your bookshelf." --Into Craft"I liked the original Farmer's Wife book but I love this version. Each traditional block has been renamed as either a woman's name or a noun that relates to a woman- like 'Granny'. The blocks vary from relatively simple to complex with a fiendish number of pieces to sew together but they are all beautifully presented in a mix of reproduction fabrics and solids. A range of construction methods are offered. All the blocks have templates and foundation paper piecing options and there are rotary cut options for pieces that can be easily measured." --Very Kerry Berry"In my wildest dreams I would be able to sit down and enjoyably sew this entire book (The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt)." --Very Shannon

I believe the book could be improved with a note section on each project that could be handy for people using the book as they can write down any notes that they might need on the way. I think I will be making a spooky ‘Eek’ gnome first for Halloween, followed by ‘Noel’ and ‘Kold’ which will be part of my festive decorations. Can’t wait to get started. -- Jackie * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Sew Gnomes by Debbie Shore To be perfectly honest this isn’t my usual ‘go to’ or ‘must have’ craft book. As I have never made gnomes or had the inclination to, but, having read through this adorable little book I have surprised myself in how much I want to make my first Gnome, I’m hooked! From my past experiences when purchasing any new craft book it is the quality of the pictures throughout that I tend to look for, as I find learning through visual content rather than the written word easier. No worries on this front with this book as the pictures from cover to cover, inside and out are self-explanatory and are of a beautiful quality, being bright and colourful and of a good size. I was impressed with the ‘Materials and notions’ and ‘Hand stitches’ chapters, as this clearly told me exactly what products I would need for the Gnomes and each stitch that is needed was very clearly illustrated and explained. The next chapter ‘Making Gnome body & features’ really triggered my creative imagination. As it gives me the opportunity to add my own characteristics to these lovely little magical friends. What I also really like about this book are the individual chapters for each Gnome character. With each chapter being laid out so well , and easy to follow. It starts with exactly what you need to create each character, and it is then explained in both words and pictures on how to bring them to life, for even a novice Gnome maker like myself. I love having full-size templates at the back, (no messing with attempting to enlarge these on a printer!). Just a small tip, do photo-copy these template pages and make them from a hard card or template plastic and leave this beautiful book intact. The size of the book is perfect, and easy to pop into a craft bag or take away with you to your favourite destination or craft class. At only £10.99 this book is excellent value and worth keeping on your craft book shelf. This is an ideal book to bring out when the children are around as it will keep them and adults alike amused for hours as the characters are so playful and such fun it will spark their imagination. As no sewing machine is required, these little gems can be created anywhere with minimal amount of fuss and craft supplies. It will be difficult to choose which Gnome to make first, but if I had to choose it would be Ding and Dong. I just love the characteristics you can create with these two, plus I am a bit in love with their felt boots! As I’m writing this review, sat on a sun lounger in the South of France, I’m currently Googling where my nearest craft shop is for supplies of felt! So do look out on my Instagram for Gnome pictures. Thank you to Debbie Shore for introducing me to the wonderful world of Gnomes!! -- Sandi * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Debbie Shore - Sew Gnomes £10.99 ( published by Search Press, September 2023) Another lovely book by Debbie to add to my collection. A fun theme to cover every season clearly presented with colour photographs and full size patterns, no messing about just get sewing. The pictures make the book easy for any beginner to follow with an uncomplicated materials list. Nice tips on notions and techniques to use. The size of the printing is easy to read and refer to. The Gnomes can be hand sewn and/or machine sewn. I am looking forward to making Fungus first, a cute little character. The book would make a nice gift for any age to enjoy and even to recycle your scraps. One thing to note is that they are not toys. -- Sandra * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *When I opened this book, it was like opening the door to a magical land. Seeing all the adorable characters you can imagine them coming to life. They are so cute & the amount of detail & thought that has gone into these Gnomes is so Debbie Shore. The book as always by Debbie Shore has so many clear step by step pictures & the instructions are very clear. Don't worry if you can't draw as it has full size templates, which is ideal for someone like me. Also, there is a great variety of Gnomes to make, which makes making each one even more exciting. -- Pauline * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *As with all of Debbie's books, the quality is great, from all the pictures on the front cover and inside to the level of instruction, its so inviting. The book says its for 12 gnomes, but really your imagination is the only limit, guided by the author's experienced instruction. My favourite gnome is on page 72, such a cutie. The hands and feet even have nails. Explanation of all the requirements is really clear as well as detailed instructions for hand stitching and 5 pages of templates for key accessories and shapes. I absolutely love this book and have already started to make Bugs. :-) -- Tracey * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *If you love gnomes it's a must have book. The quality of the outer cover and pages is excellent. The photos are so detailed and the print is of a comfortable size to read and full size patterns are perfect. Overall an excellent, informative and great value for money book. -- Sue * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Another fantastic and unique craft book by Debbie Shore! Although I often shy away from making dolls, toys, etc., I realized after reading Debbie's book, I can do this! All of her books are printed on high-quality paper with colorful and creative photography. Each page is thoughtfully laid out with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions and accompanying pictures. Stackpole Books Yoko Saitos Patchwork Bags Accessories
Book SynopsisYoko Saito's sewing designs for bags and accessories are distinctive for their use of creative motifs and charming details, while her modern aesthetic utilises muted tones for a soft, relaxing feel.Trade ReviewI love Yoko Saito's work and she always makes me want to get sewing straight away. This book is no exception with its wonderful patchwork projects. Detailed step by step instructions for patchwork and for each design are illustrated ensuring that you can complete each project easily. There are full-size templates and diagrams, materials needed, instructions and finished measurements. You can choose from 10 bags, 5 pouches and 10 accessories and home decor. The shoulder bag shown on the front cover is a favourite, there are alternative shoulder bag patterns in the book including a round one, but the wide tote bag is so practical, the applique bags os pretty (especially the dragonfly one), there is also a bucket bag. I think you would want to make all 10 bags at least once. The pouches are good as small bags or make-up bags and each has a different shape and style, my favourite is the Blue flower Pouch, it is very sweet. In Accessories you will find a drawstring bag, a passport cover, mini bag, notebook and pencil holder, a wall hanging, two cushion covers and placemats. You'll also find essential supplies and tools. I must say that this book is tremendous. * Karen Platt -yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Patchwork is not just for quilts; you can use the same methods to make bags too! There are twenty-five different bags to choose from, which make use of a whole range of patchwork and quilting methods. From shoulder and hand bags in a number of shapes and sizes to pouches, purses and mini bags, there is a bag for most occasions in here. There are also place mats, cushion covers, pencil cases and other items for the home and all in the author’s signature beige and taupe color scheme. This book was originally published in Japan and has a different layout, with photographs of the items at the front and all the instructions and charts at the back. The latter section starts with a page featuring all the supplies and tools you will need in color, followed by several pages of line diagrams showing all the patchwork methods you need to know. This includes embroidery and other stitches, making and using bias binding and other basic methods. If you are a total beginner you might find some of this less easy to learn from than the usual Search Press staged photographs, but those with some knowledge of the subject ought to find the clear diagrams sufficient. Projects themselves also feature line diagrams, comparable to the style of instructions found in dress pattern packets only with very few words. More than one read through before embarking on a project is a must, but anybody who has made bags and other items before ought to be able to work it out. They will be rewarded with some lovely pieces. * Rachel Hyde - Myshelf.com *

C & T Publishing Barbara Brackman's Civil War Sampler: 50 Quilt
Book SynopsisThis remarkable book features fifty quilt blocks to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, some of which were presented on Barbara’s blog in 2011. Many of these blocks weren’t designed until the 1930s, but Barbara selected each one for the unique symbolism its name lends to recounting stories of the war during the mid-1800s. Dig into those prized reproduction fabrics and enjoy mixing and matching blocks to make your own tribute quilt. Images of sampler quilts are included for inspiration. * Journey through this historic time in American history with Barbara Brackman, bestselling author and quilt historian * Learn more about Civil War women through this special compilation of quilt block patterns, combined with period photos and first-person accounts * Choose from a variety of pieced or appliquéd blocks, each shown in two colorways with instructions for assembling two sizes (8” and 12”)Trade ReviewIf you are a history buff like some of us here, along with quilting, Barbara Brackman introduced the Civil War Sampler: 50 Quilt Blocks with Stories from History coming out from C&T. The blocks and possibilities are endless and have appear on her blog but you can get them and the history in her book. Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, 11/15/12 Each week throughout 2011, renowned quilt historian Barbara Brackman posted instructions for making a patchwork block on her blog to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. Although the blocks were traditional, most had been published in the 1930s in newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune and the Kansas City Star-not many actually dated from the Civil War era. But Barbara uses the symbolism of the block names and words taken from the diaries and journals of the time to acknowledge the war's events and honour those who lived through them. The series became extremely popular, and Barbara was encouraged to package them, along with a few new features, in this book. She provides instructions for cutting the fabric to make both 8 in and 12 in blocks, a diagram to help you construct it, photographs of the block made in two different colourways, and a historical note that explains the significance of its name. There aren't detailed step-by-step instructions for making a quilt from all 50 blocks-that's up to your imagination. Australian Homespun Magazine, April 2013 Here is an opportunity to learn more about the lives of Civil War women and travel through this period of American history with this special compilation of 50 quilt block patterns, combined with period photographs and first-person accounts. Choose from a variety of pieced or appliqued blocks, each shown in two colorways with instructions for assembling two sizes, 8" and 12" blocks. Look out for the display of Foxy Quilters, Barnsley, which are based on Barbara Brackman's Civil War Sampler. The quilts will be touring the quilt shows this autumn with Grosvenor Shows at Harrogate, Edinburgh, Malvern and Duxford. Fabrications Quilting For You, April/May 2013 This is another stunning book from quiltmaker and historian Barbara Brackman. The book is based on the blog she ran in 2011, publishing one quilt block a week and sharing one personal account linked to the American Civil War as 2011 was the 150th anniversary of the start of that conflict. The book contains 50 blocks and each one has a personal recount of an interesting historical piece or both, some relating to the blocks and all relating to the war. There are cutting and piecing instructions to make all of the blocks as either 8 in or 12 in and each block is shown in at least two colour variations. This is another lovely book of Barbara's to add to the collection. Australian Quilters Companion, July 2013

Landauer Publishing Jelly Roll Bargello Quilts
Book SynopsisFascinating Bargello quilts consist entirely of straight seams and rectangular pieces, yet create the mesmerizing optical illusion of graceful movement, waves and curves. Bargello quilt making looks complex and difficult—but any beginner quilter who can sew a straight seam can master the necessary skills. It is also a technique that is easy to complete quickly and with confidence, thanks to pre-cut jelly rolls and author Karin Hellaby’s clear how-to instructions. Karin works with both solid and printed fabrics, and varies her colour palette from monochromatic to riotously colourful. Beginning and experienced crazy quilters will love the dictionary of 60 embroidery and beading stitches, foundation piecing primer, plus stitch maps for all seam treatments and embellishments.Trade ReviewCrazy Quilting has always been a dream of mine to try since I saw a beautiful crazy quilt cushion in Smithills Hall I have always felt daunted by the process but this book has taken away that fear. There are ten projects in this book and everything you need to know to make them is in the book. You are taken through easy steps how to crazy quilt. Everything from materials to use to how to use the piecing method. Then it's straight into the projects. The first project is the tablet purse. You start off with a bulleted list of everything you will need to complete the project. Then it's onto the making. With each picture you are shown the things you need to complete and where you can find each of the stitches in the book. As it is broken down into smaller parts it doesn't seem quite as daunting. Once you have completed the front panel you are then talked through the back panel and how to assemble the purse. After the projects is the stitch dictionary. You are supplied with step by step instructions with some pictures to support you. Pictures are included on some of the stitches to show how the stitch appears in one of the projects. At the back of the book all the templates you will need are provided. I love this fact as it means I can use the book without having to re-size the patterns. Overall I really like the projects in the book and they bring together an amazing array of techniques using crazy quilting. * Crochet Addict UK *Discover 10 excellent quilted projects that are perfectly useful, stylish and practical. See how to combine different types of fabrics in your crazy-quilting with full-size patterns. That is a bonus, as you will not need to re-size anything. Find 60 embroidery and beading stitches with instructions. That’s bonus number 2. There are 10 projects in all and I would be happy to make all 10. How often can you say that you would make every project in a book? My favourites are the slippers and the spring flower bag, but all the projects are attractive. They include more bags, tablet case, glasses purse, sewing pouch, trinket box, sewing basket and tea cosy. They can be seen altogether on the Contents page. This book has excellent tips, ones I have not seen before. It also teaches you foundation piecing. The clear diagrams and photographs are superb along with easy-t0-follow instructions. Fabric and thread requirements are seen at a glance. With the stitch dictionary and using the ideas in this book, you could easily make many more projects of your own. That’s bonus number 3. This book clearly explains techniques and provides wonderful projects and ideas.
