  • Kaffe Fassett's Quilts by the Sea

Taunton Press Inc Kaffe Fassett's Quilts by the Sea

Book SynopsisFor this landmark 25th book in his highly successful patchwork and quilt series, Kaffe Fassett has chosen the southern coast of England as the inspiration for his new collection of quilts. Beachgoers have long enjoyed the rocky shores near Hastings in East Sussex for their wild beauty and classic architecture. Featuring several miles of coastline, this seaside community has its roots in the fishing industry and was the site of the Norman Conquest's Battle of Hastings in 1066. Once a popular Victorian resort area, this gem of the southern coast is now experiencing a travel renaissance thanks to a thriving arts movement. The gallery section of the book showcases the 21 new designs, all brilliantly photographed on location by Debbie Patterson. The deep jewel tones of Kaffe's Maroon Frames are enhanced by the geometric lines of similarly toned beach huts. Kaffe's Vintage Stars has an old-world quality featuring earthy tones that are brilliantly set against the backdrop of a brick garden wall. The stunning Colour Garden quilt, featured on the cover, feels perfectly at home draped over an old fishing boat overlooking the sea, while his confectionary Fruit Sorbet cushion showcases taffy-inspired pastels sure to inspire a cozy afternoon by the beach. With both Kaffe's classic fabrics and his forward-thinking new designs to choose from, quilters can find an eclectic mix of patterns and colors ranging from Philip Jacobs' eye-catching large-scale floral prints to Brandon Mably's smaller-scale quirky patterns. In addition to the quilt designs, Quilts by the Sea includes detailed step-by-step instructions, accompanied by a flat shot of each quilt with the relevant block or quilt assembly diagram, while a how-to section offers more detailed guidance.

  • Lucky Spool Media Walk: Master Machine Quilting with Your Walking

Book SynopsisQuilters love the look of textural, detailed stitching that adds to the beauty of the quilt top design. This stitching is actually the “quilting” in quilting, and many quilters feel that paying a professional for machine quilting is one of their only options. The walking foot is an accessory for sewing machines that’s often used for machine quilting, but many quilters only use it to stitch around their designs. But the walking foot can do so much more, and author Jacquie Gering shows all of her tips, tricks and techniques to master all of the skills needed to quilt with a walking foot. This book cover the basics of using the walking foot, in addition to preparing the quilt, marking, managing large quilts, preventing puckers and keeping lines straight. Chapters include a variety of types of walking-foot quilting, including channel quilting, matchstick quilting, and decorative stitch quilting. Quilters won’t be limited to straight line quilting, either! They’ll learn how to quilt spirals, simple curves, and and marked curves like braids and clamshells.

Book SynopsisCreate nine stunning quilts and 11 desirable gifts using contemporary big-stitch quilting. Big stitches sewn by hand lend an irresistibly tactile quality and visual style to quilts and other items, as well as being meditative and relaxing to sew. Each of the 20 stylish projects in this book is quilted using a range of big stitches, inspired by Boro, Kantha and Sashiko-style stitching. Each project is shown step by step, with illustrations and photographs throughout to make the process simple to follow. Learn how to create nine gorgeous quilts as well as 11 gift projects, which include wrapping cloths, a Japanese knot bag, a pillow cover and coasters. There is a comprehensive techniques section at the start of the book that explores the kinds of materials and fabrics best suited to big stitch quilting, the stitches and methods used, and how to assemble and finish your quilts. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in this stunning form of hand quilting.Trade ReviewI am a fan of Carolyn Forster's books, and this latest book did not disappoint. As with all my other Search Press craft books, the book is really well illustrated with good photographs. The projects succeed in meeting my need for something more than very basic, but not super complicated either, something I often find difficult in quilting books. Although I do machine quilt, I would like to do more hand quilting and this book provides just the inspiration I was looking for. -- Linda Jesuadian * Amazon Customer Review *The perfect guide for those interested in hand quilting, Big Stitch Quilting unveils 20 pretty projects - from wrapping cloths and a Japanese knot bag to a pillow cover and coasters. You can choose from a combination of quilts and gifts, inspired by Boro, Kantha and Sashiko. This title also explores the most suitable materials, fabrics and methods to use, and also guides you through the process of assembling and finishing quilts. * Sew Magazine *Good well-written instructions with plenty of photos and pictures to follow as you learn to quilt either by hand or using a machine. I'm looking forward to using this book to guide me on my journey as I learn to quilt. -- Sara Hawkins * Amazon Customer Review *As someone who's been quilting for 45 years, I mostly buy quilt books for ideas not techniques, so it is pretty rare that I open a book and say 'that's interesting, I didn't know how to do that!' This was one of those times. Good historical explanations of the 'big stitch' tradition (enough to silence even the fiercest of the traditional quilt police); techniques to speed up piecing, 'big' stitches that were new to me (i.e. not just running stitch), very clear explanations and good, close-up photos that really show what is being explained. An excellent book and one that is destined to be returned to time and again. But then of course it is by Carolyn Forster, I should have expected no less. I heartily recommend it. -- Ginnie Willis * Amazon Customer Review *Big Stitch Quilting is an informative introductory book, full of lovely examples and projects to help get you started with your own big stitch work. I'm really looking forward to trying out the various techniques on my own quilts and gifts. It's accessible to both beginner and more experienced quilters, Forster takes you through basting and binding techniques as well as the quilting itself. She also offers a brief overview of historical and cultural examples of big stitch quilting techniques from around the world, such as sashiko and Great Depression era utility quilts.. There are a range of projects, from larger quilts through to doll-size quilts, Japanese-style knot bags, coasters and sewing rolls, which I feel make it very accessible to a range of abilities and for quilters who don't have time for larger hand-quilting projects. The photography of the various projects and examples is beautiful, making for a book that's also pleasant to flick through. -- Leanne Marie * Customer Review *I've been sewing for years but I'm quite new to quilting so this book is most informative. I'm not good at reading instructions, I like to jump in and start a project then go back and find out why it went wrong! So I started with the pincushion on page 128 (see pic) Carolyn's method and pictures were so easy to follow. After trying a few projects I went back to check out the history of these quilts which is an interesting read in itself. I found that I already had most of what I needed in the Tools and Materials section, never heard of a Hera marker but I have something else that will do the job when necessary. The templates are a bonus, it means you can just pick a project and get on with it without much fuss and there are 20 to choose from. This book will be my companion while I perfect my 'big stitch' technique and will be a great addition to my sewing library for future quilting reference. Thank you Carolyn Forster for introducing me to this form of quilting. -- Lisa Hemstock * Customer Review *Hand stitching lends a tactile quality and visual style to any item, as well as being meditative and relaxing to sew. Step by step photos and illustrations make everything easy to follow and the nine quilts and eleven gift projects including wrapping cloths, a Japanese knot bag, pillow cover and coasters. * Machine Knitting Monthly *A practical guide to sewing and hand quilting twenty projects using big stitch quilting. Nine quilts and eleven gifts which include coasters, a sewing roll and a pillow amongst other ideas. Big stitch quilting, usually using thicker thread, has been utilised throughout history around the globe and Carolyn has taken inspiration from these different sources. A section on tools and equipment is followed by fabrics and wadding. Simple piecing is covered briefly with a good section on layering and basting your quilt, which is essential when hand quilting. There is a good example of a table top quilt tacking method. Quilt designs are kept simple, Baptist Fan is an example. A selection of different quilting stitches are demonstrated. There is a good selection on various binding options. Th quilts are simply pieced, excellent for using up scraps, with one quilt using applique flowers on a plain background. The gifts are a lovely selection of projects. Templates are provided to copy. This is a good choice for a beginner quilter as all basics are covered but has some interesting background on the different big stitch techniques which would be of interest for the more experienced. -- British Patchwork and Quilting * British Patchwork and Quilting *‘Big Stitch Quilting‘ is the 2021 book by the amazing Carolyn Forster. Carolyn is an internationally renowned writer, designer, maker and teacher with a multitude of publications – all of which are superb! This book is another incredible addition to the Carolyn bookshelf! ‘Big stitch quilting’ is absolutely packed with beautiful photography, detailed instructions, a multitude of inspiration and more alongside 20 projects for you to explore big stitch quilting with. [...] Carolyn starts the book by exploring big stitch quilting in historical makes as well as in different cultures. The level of details in the photos is astounding and I love learning the wider context of big stitch quilting and how it has been used. Carolyn then moves on to talk about the tools and materials that she uses for big stitch quilting. Again, I really liked the level of detail and how the tools and materials are broken down into subsections. This really helps the reader to make informed choices about materials, their uses, and considerations to take into account. Each section has a clear heading so you know what it is about. In this section, Carolyn discusses the actual act of stitching the patchwork pieces and covers stitch length, pressing, chain piecing, and techniques. Nothing is taken for granted and I really like that. Carolyn does not presuppose our knowledge as the reader and so all bases are covered with instructions that are all clear, understandable, easy to follow and have high-quality instructional images. There are instructions and clear images for tacking, basting, quilt designs, quilting stitches, binding, and more. Then come the projects and they are all amazing!! Sometimes, a book has a handful of projects that may inspire you. This book, however, is inspiring from start to finish. All 20 of the projects are amazing and ones that I absolutely want to try! There are 11 home items projects (bags, coasters, wrapping cloths etc) and 9 quilt projects. Each project is titled and has clear information about the sort of project it is, the measurements, the requirements (fabric and notions), how to cut the fabric, and a digital image of the design as well as styled photography. The photography truly is sublime! Following the above information, there is then a step-by-step for how to make the project with digital images to guide you alongside written guidance. The book also contains the templates that are needed for the projects too so you can start stitching straight away! I truly, truly love this book. It really is jam-packed with sumptuous images as well as clear and easy-to-follow instructions for a whole range of methods, stitches and quilting approaches as well as the 20 projects. It is absolutely a book that I’d highly, highly recommend! -- Naomi Alice * naomialice.co.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction History/context Tools and materials Fabrics Threads Techniques Cutting, Chain piecing, Basting, Quilt designs, Quilting stitches (starting and stopping, big stitch, Mennonite tacks, Methodist knots, running cross stitch), Binding The Projects Quilt 1: Navy Borders, Quilt 2: Octagons, Quilt 3: Swedish Bars, Quilt 4: Fabric Stack, Quilt 5: Stepping Stones, Quilt 6: Every Last Piece, Quilt 7: Scattered Flowers, Quilt 8: Quilted Vines Mini Quilt, Quilt 9: Dolly Quilt, Gift 1: Coasters, Gift 2: Furoshiki cloths, Gift 3: Kitchen table topper, Gift 4: Sewing roll, Gift 5: Tulip Pillow, Gift 6: Knot bag, Gift 7: Zokin, Gift 8: Hot Water Bottle Cover, Gift 9: Golden pincushion, Gift 10: Lavender bags, Gift 11: Table centre Templates Index

I think I will be making a spooky ‘Eek’ gnome first for Halloween, followed by ‘Noel’ and ‘Kold’ which will be part of my festive decorations. Can’t wait to get started. -- Jackie * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Sew Gnomes by Debbie Shore To be perfectly honest this isn’t my usual ‘go to’ or ‘must have’ craft book. As I have never made gnomes or had the inclination to, but, having read through this adorable little book I have surprised myself in how much I want to make my first Gnome, I’m hooked! From my past experiences when purchasing any new craft book it is the quality of the pictures throughout that I tend to look for, as I find learning through visual content rather than the written word easier. No worries on this front with this book as the pictures from cover to cover, inside and out are self-explanatory and are of a beautiful quality, being bright and colourful and of a good size. I was impressed with the ‘Materials and notions’ and ‘Hand stitches’ chapters, as this clearly told me exactly what products I would need for the Gnomes and each stitch that is needed was very clearly illustrated and explained. The next chapter ‘Making Gnome body & features’ really triggered my creative imagination. As it gives me the opportunity to add my own characteristics to these lovely little magical friends. What I also really like about this book are the individual chapters for each Gnome character. With each chapter being laid out so well , and easy to follow. It starts with exactly what you need to create each character, and it is then explained in both words and pictures on how to bring them to life, for even a novice Gnome maker like myself. I love having full-size templates at the back, (no messing with attempting to enlarge these on a printer!). Just a small tip, do photo-copy these template pages and make them from a hard card or template plastic and leave this beautiful book intact. The size of the book is perfect, and easy to pop into a craft bag or take away with you to your favourite destination or craft class. At only £10.99 this book is excellent value and worth keeping on your craft book shelf. This is an ideal book to bring out when the children are around as it will keep them and adults alike amused for hours as the characters are so playful and such fun it will spark their imagination. As no sewing machine is required, these little gems can be created anywhere with minimal amount of fuss and craft supplies. It will be difficult to choose which Gnome to make first, but if I had to choose it would be Ding and Dong. I just love the characteristics you can create with these two, plus I am a bit in love with their felt boots! As I’m writing this review, sat on a sun lounger in the South of France, I’m currently Googling where my nearest craft shop is for supplies of felt! So do look out on my Instagram for Gnome pictures. Thank you to Debbie Shore for introducing me to the wonderful world of Gnomes!! -- Sandi * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Debbie Shore - Sew Gnomes £10.99 ( published by Search Press, September 2023) Another lovely book by Debbie to add to my collection. A fun theme to cover every season clearly presented with colour photographs and full size patterns, no messing about just get sewing. The pictures make the book easy for any beginner to follow with an uncomplicated materials list. Nice tips on notions and techniques to use. The size of the printing is easy to read and refer to. The Gnomes can be hand sewn and/or machine sewn. I am looking forward to making Fungus first, a cute little character. The book would make a nice gift for any age to enjoy and even to recycle your scraps. One thing to note is that they are not toys. -- Sandra * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *When I opened this book, it was like opening the door to a magical land. Seeing all the adorable characters you can imagine them coming to life. They are so cute & the amount of detail & thought that has gone into these Gnomes is so Debbie Shore. The book as always by Debbie Shore has so many clear step by step pictures & the instructions are very clear. Don't worry if you can't draw as it has full size templates, which is ideal for someone like me. Also, there is a great variety of Gnomes to make, which makes making each one even more exciting. -- Pauline * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *As with all of Debbie's books, the quality is great, from all the pictures on the front cover and inside to the level of instruction, its so inviting. The book says its for 12 gnomes, but really your imagination is the only limit, guided by the author's experienced instruction. My favourite gnome is on page 72, such a cutie. The hands and feet even have nails. Explanation of all the requirements is really clear as well as detailed instructions for hand stitching and 5 pages of templates for key accessories and shapes. I absolutely love this book and have already started to make Bugs. :-) -- Tracey * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *If you love gnomes it's a must have book. The quality of the outer cover and pages is excellent. The photos are so detailed and the print is of a comfortable size to read and full size patterns are perfect. Overall an excellent, informative and great value for money book. -- Sue * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Another fantastic and unique craft book by Debbie Shore! Although I often shy away from making dolls, toys, etc., I realized after reading Debbie's book, I can do this! All of her books are printed on high-quality paper with colorful and creative photography. Each page is thoughtfully laid out with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions and accompanying pictures. Product information with pictures along with Debbie's tips and techniques are a signature of her quality craft books. • Hand-Stitched Quilts: Choose from 27 Block

Search Press Ltd Hand-Stitched Quilts: Choose from 27 Block

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThrough one quilt, learn how to patchwork and quilt by hand in this accessible how-to book. Slow stitching and mindful crafting is more popular than ever, and with just a few notions you can peacefully create a stunning quilt entirely by hand, in your own time and at your own pace. In her brand-new book, best-selling author and teacher Carolyn Forster will demonstrate all the techniques to hand-piece a variety of blocks and hand-quilt them together. Not only will you have a beautiful hand-made quilt at the end, but you can join thousands of other people today who are returning to the roots of traditional patchworking and quilting. Through a series of ‘bite-size’ lessons, you will be taken through the process of making your quilt chronologically, so you not only understand the order in which to craft your quilt, but you build up your skills as you progress through the book. Learn how to cut out your fabrics with and without templates, how to sew your patches together, and then get stuck into sewing a gorgeous library of blocks! There are 27 different blocks to make, each with its own piecing instructions, piecing diagrams, and helpful photographs that show the front and back of the block. Templates for every block are included at the back of the book, at full size. Once your blocks are ready to go, Carolyn shows you how to quilt them, using a combination of hand stitching and big-stitch quilting. Illustrated instructions are also included on how to construct and bind your quilt at the very end. With dozens of exquisite blocks to make, and useful and inspirational information throughout, this is a beautiful book that will take the mystery out of making hand-stitched quilts, and spark your quilting ideas for years to come.Trade ReviewCarolyn has written a gem of a book, great for those new to hand piecing and quilting but also a good reminder to those more experienced of the correct procedures in order to achieve precise results. I found the section on piecing particularly useful as Carolyn shows you how to sew your seams so they are neat and match perfectly. There are a variety of blocks for you to create and a suggestion on how you can place them to make a quilt but also suggestions on how you can make the quilt your own. I’m looking forward to using the book to refine my technique and make myself an heirloom quilt. -- Sam Jones * Customer Review *I have other Carolyn Forster books, so was hopeful of another good one, and this did not disappoint! Right from the Introduction, I realised this was going to be such a relaxing book to follow. I've never made a quilt totally by hand, but this book really makes me want to have a go. Such a change not to feel rushed to produce a quilt, but to be able to totally enjoy the process! I also like the fact that it takes you through the 27 blocks step-by-step, starting with the most simple, and that if you wanted to, could just use some of them for other projects, or do them all and make the quilt. Of course, if you like, you could always do them by machine! A really lovely book! * Customer Review *Learn how to patchwork and quilt by hand in this accessible how-to book. Slow stitching and mindful crafting is more popular than ever and with just a few notions you can peacefully create a stunning quilt entirely by hand, in your own time and at your own pace. * Machine Knitting Monthly, September 2023 *Patchwork instructor Forster (Hand Quilting Techniques for Farmhouse Style) details how to sew quilts by hand in this cozy manual. To follow the block design templates included with the book, Forster recommends gluing each unique shape onto card stock or a thin plastic sheet, cutting it out, and then using the piece to trace and cut that shape from fabric, leaving a quarter inch all the way around for the seam allowance. Forster explains how to make 27 blocks that readers can mix and match to create quilts. The designs range from the relatively simple, including a four-square checkerboard and a “simple block of rectangles around a square,” to the more complex – the “sunburst” design features 48 angular pieces arranged around a circle to resemble the rays of the sun and the 60-piece “carpenter’s wheel” features interlocked concentric rows of squares and diamonds. The author also provides two “quilt sampler layouts” showing how one might assemble the various blocks in a quilt. The designs are visually appealing, and beginners will appreciate the comprehensive photo illustrations showing how to thread a needle, make stitches, and sew seams. Readers will warm to this. * Publishers Weekly *Carolyn takes a lot of inspiration from antique and historical quilts, and she is truly interested in, and fascinated by, all aspects of quilt-making, both in knowledge and in practice [...] Every step of hand-piecing is broken down with clear instructions, close up photos, written text and top tips. It makes it incredibly accessible, easy to follow and beautiful to read. I adored everything about this book and it is another stunning and inspirational book for stitchers! -- Naomi Clarke * naomialice.co.uk *A super book with 27 block designs, including full-size patchwork templates. An A4 size book printed on quality paper and well bound. Extremely clear layout with easy understandable instructions supported by clear, colour photographs. I particularly like the choice of fabrics used for the blocks as it shows the piecing and pattern clearly. The beginning of the book has sections on equipment, technique to help you stitch, how to use templates and cut your fabric. Following the block patterns are sections on quilt layout, sewing the blocks together and how to sash, baste, hand quilt, bind and care for your finished quilt. There is a super selection of block designs including some more unusual ones, but they are all very striking. This is a beautiful comprehensive book, clearly presented and it would be a well received gift for both an experienced quilter and a beginner due to the very easy to follow guides. -- Sandra Grey * Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Quilt materials 8 Piecing materials 9 Cutting & sewing fabric 10 Equipment for hand piecing 20 Starting to stitch 22 Piecing 26 Book of blocks 32 THE BLOCKS 34 Two Patch & Four Patch 36, Half Square Triangle 38, Kansas Dugout 40, Flying Geese 42, Album 44, Bright Hopes 46, Spools 48, Bow Tie 50, Snowball 52, Mill & Star 54, Courthouse Steps 56, Woven Ribbons 58, Pansy 60, Grandmother’s Star 62, Western Star 64, Wishing Star 66, Drusilla’s Delight 68, Southern Star 70, Arrowhead 72, Carpenter’s Wheel 74, Marbles 76, Water Wheel 78, Sailor’s Joy 80, Cassiopeia 82, Turkey Tracks 84, Thirties Tulip 86, Sunburst 88 Adding sashing & post squares 90 Making the quilt your own 92 Sewing the quilt together 96 Tacking/basting & quilting necessities 104 Tacking/basting the quilt 109 Hand quilting 115 Binding the quilt 122 Labelling & aftercare 128 Patchwork templates 130
