If so then you must pick up a copy of Allison Aller’s new book “Crazy Quilting – Modern Piecing & Embellishing Techniques for Joyful Stitching”. Allie Aller’s work has a contemporary spin due to her use of new techniques, fibers, fabrics, and imagery. Allison says working with these materials “really give crazy quilts an updated, contemporary look and feel, taking Crazy Quilting out of the traditional Victorian mold for good!” The book has an in-depth section on materials and tools. Learn image transfer and stenciling methods while creating your own fabrics. There are four ways to create a crazy quilt block presented in the book. The directions are easy to under- stand and clearly illustrated. What would a crazy quilt be without embellishment through embroidery, beading, lace and dimensional flowers? Allison’s tips on working with these materials are invaluable. The gallery section provides inspiration that will have you jump- ing right in on one of the seven projects found in the book and thanks to Allison’s expertise you will soon be ready to work on your own crazy quilt. * Applique Society, The *Sept 11 If you have ever wanted to try crazy quilting, this is the book for you. It is full of great techniques and ways to utilize your stash and embellishments. Aller walks you through seven different projects from concept to completion. If ever you were thinking of trying some mixed media projects, but were afraid of the outcome, here is your opportunity to give it a try. There is a strong mix of traditional and current trends in this book. The author leaves a lot of room for personal taste and preferences. As a how-to book for this technique, it is great. * Quilter's World *Apr 12 I love embroidery and I love quilting. Here I get to combine the best of both worlds with crazy quilting. There is no limit to the amount of fabrics you can use and no limit to the amount of stitching you can do. Crazy quilting is truly an over the top combination of both. Allie's book gives great instructions on everything that you'll need: from various techniques to begin your blocks, types of fabrics used, piece sizes, embroidery stitches, embellishments and how to attach them (there is a great tutorial on how to attach real sea shells to your quilt), there's inspirational quilts to get you motivated, and a wide variety of projects. I especially like the first project that she uses to get you started which is a pincushion. It gives you a real taste of what crazy quilting is all about in a very compact easy to use design. It's a great way to get your feet wet. The sky's the limit as to what you can create using the basics of crazy quilting.-Lydia Lowe * Creative Troupe *

  • C & T Publishing Simply Triangles: 11 Deceptively Easy Quilts Featuring Stars, Daisies & Pinwheels

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCreate unique, dynamic designs within pieced triangles, then combine those triangles with other shapes to make sassy stars, daisies, and pinwheels. Add a hexagonal quilt to your repertoire-perfect for a wallhanging or tabletop centerpiece. Whether your palette preference runs to vivid or more muted hues, you'll discover how your color schemes will add a hint of movement to your quilts. Trade ReviewJune 12 Are you ready for a triangle extravaganza? Just when you thought you had seen it all as far as the triangle is concerned, up pops another book with even more ideas for the use of the humble triangle. This book contains 11 deceptively easy quilts featuring stars, daisies and pinwheels, all with full instructions on how to create complex-looking designs for any size quilt by combining simple shapes like triangles and diamonds. There are also a number of skill-building techniques from strip piecing to the dreaded Y-seam, so here is a good opportunity to extend your repertoire. * Fabrications *Oct 12 Barbara has really done it again! I enjoyed her first book, Star Struck Quilts, which focused on the eight-pointed Lone Star with numerous attractive variations. She continues her exploration of geometric designs using triangles in another well-written and well-illustrated book,Simply Triangles from C&T Publishing. As the subtitle suggests, the author provides projects using triangles to make stars, daisies (with some clever machine appliqué), and tessellating pinwheels. Simply Triangles has many valuable quilt book features. Basic quilting supplies are sufficient for the projects using the provided templates, or two specialty tools that many quilters already own. Detailed instructions for increasingly complex projects include: hints for fabric selection, color value placement, marking, pinning, piecing and pressing. Especially helpful are step-by-step photographs and illustrations for the often dreaded Y-seam and mitered corners. Quilting design suggestions for each project include close-up shots of the author’s lovely quilting in finished quilts. Barbara Cline’s Simply Triangles is an excellent addition to any quilter’s library as a skill-building resource and source of inspiration for future projects. I am eager to try her method of overlaying netting to add a three-dimensional effect. Although not abook for novice quilters, I would highly recommend this book to all quilters who want to expand their piecing skills, experiment with color values, and make fascinating quilts with a strong geometric statement. * Connectingthreads.com *

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLight not only catches the eye, it can transform your work into something truly magical. With four inspiring projects to get you started, Gloria Loughman shows you how light can set a mood. You’ll get stunning results with her mosaic tile process for capturing the essence of natural light with your fabric selection. You’ll learn how to create your own landscape quilt with her easy-to-master techniques, including fusible tiling, invisible machine appliqué, free-motion stitching, plus fabric dyeing and painting. She shares important design principals behind perspective, composition, color, and focal points that add dramatic depth to your landscape appliqué quilts.Trade ReviewLoughman tiles while others toil. Tiles, in geometric shapes cut from fabric, are to the quilter what tesserae are to mosaicists. The tiles add background and movement, color and light. Loughman echoes elements of impressionist and pointillist art by manipulating light on quilts as Cezanne and Seurat did with small brush strokes on canvas. "Tiling large areas of your quilts," she writes, "allows you, in some ways, to follow in these master painters' footsteps." By playing with light and color, she designs additional dimensions to quilted landscapes, thereby creating smashing results. Her instruction book does not begin with the tiles, however: she starts with design; teaches color and value and hue; and considers fabric selection, including a chapter on customizing fabric through dyeing and painting. After explaining how to make, place, and stitch down the tiles, Loughman works through construction of four landscape projects. These projects are sophisticated, certainly more dramatic than her writing, which borders on the banal. Loughman's book is made more beautiful to look at by her husband's vacation photography. Publishers Weekly, 12/3/12 Bestselling author Gloria Loughman is back with more innovative techniques in her latest book. Gloria encourages readers to pay attention to light as she evokes the spirits of impressionist painters like Monet and Renoir. In this technique-based book, Gloria maps out the process of designing, selecting fabrics, using her tiling method for intriguing backgrounds, and adding foregrounds. Along the way she also provides guidance and examples for choosing inspiration for quilts, understanding color and composition, and dyeing unique fabrics. Not ready to design your own quilt yet? At the end of the book, Gloria provides patterns for four diverse quilts that will get you comfortable with her techniques and inspire you to move on to your own unique projects later. The lush and inspirational photography and diagrams will have you rushing to your stash or local quilt shop for nature-inspired fabrics to make your own 'radiant landscapes.' Quilting Arts Magazine, April/May 2013 What: Author Gloria Loughman follows the lead of Pointillism and impressionist painters and uses small pieces of fabric to form a whole image in Radiant Landscapes. Why: Learn about choosing color schemes, looking at light, and selecting fabrics. Then arrange and fuse tiles to serve as background scenery or foreground accents to achieve realistic or abstract scenes. American Patchwork & Quilting, June 2013 Edition; Mosaic Marvels In her search to add the illusive element of natural light to her art quilts, Gloria studied the great artists of the Impressionist period. her tiled backgrounds invoke the works of that art movement, and infuse her landscapes with a sense of light that provides both illumination and movement. She generously shares the methods and techniques she uses to capture this quality of light in her stunning quilts, and four tiled background projects are included. Machine Quilting Unlimited, 5/1/13 With her inspiring projects, Gloria shows you how to bring light into your quilts to set a mood. You will learn how to create your own landscape quilt with her easy techniques: fusible tiling, invisible machine applique, free-motion stitching, fabric dyeing and painting. Gloria's mosaic tile process helps you to capture the essence of natural light with your fabric selection. Gloria also reviews basic design principles. Quilter's Digest, May 2013 This is not just another book on mosaic background effects, this is THE book! Once we see the name Gloria Loughman then our expectation immediately rises and once again we are not disappointed because, through this guide, we can learn to capture the essence of natural light and add drama to landscape applique. There are instructions on basic design principles and exploring a variety of stitching, dyeing and painting techniques for quilts, making this a fusion of fabric, texture and design just waiting to be embraced and I for one cannot wait to explore. Fabrications Quilting For You, June/July 2013 Gloria is back with another lesson to create stunning landscape quilts. This time her focus is on light. Let Gloria show you how to bring light into your quilt to create mood and evoke emotion. Detailed are many of the techniques she uses in her own award-winning quilts including invisible machine applique, free-motion stitching and fusible tiling, plus fabric dyeing and painting. Allow Gloria to guide you as to the principles of perspective, composition and colour and, in turn, create amazing depth in your landscape quilts. The book contains four inspiring projects to hone your skills on before embarking on your own unique creation. Australian Quilters Companion, Summer 2013 Inspired by the Impressionist Masters it is not a wonder that the quilts in Gloria's book are breathtaking. Gloria covers design elements, colour, and inspiration. She takes the reader through her process from fabric dying to her mosaic tile process. She rounds out the book with four projects you can make using her techniques; although, with her book as a guide, you may be so motivated you might want to try your own design. Gloria's book is filled with tons of photographs, some that are very inspiring as well as those that demonstrate her techniques and inspirations. This book is bound (no pun intended) to appeal to the fibre artist who wants to create a masterpiece of their own. The Canadian Quilter Magazine, Summer 2013

The book has been designed specifically for busy mums (and grandmothers, aunts and friends) who want to make quilts for young children that will be snuggled with, dragged around, made into forts and loved until they are worn and thin. • C & T Publishing Paper Pieced Modern: 13 Stunning Quilts - Step-by-Step Visual Guide

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNothing compares to the accuracy you get with paper piecing—and it’s never been easier to learn! Amy Garro’s step-by-step visual guide to precision piecing opens up a world of possibilities for the modern quilter. Choose from 13 striking quilt patterns that appeal to the modern aesthetic, designed in Amy’s sophisticated style, featuring clever color placement, unique settings, and a thoughtful use of negative space. With blocks that range from easy to more challenging, there’s something for every skill level. Discover time-saving tricks that will help you sew extreme angles, sharp points, and unique shapes with perfect results! Her tips for setting up your workspace, choosing the best tools, and transferring patterns will turn you into the expert.Trade ReviewMarch 2015 This book by Amy Garro looks specifically at paper piecing in quilting and goes into a little more detail than ‘Quilt Talk’ above. With the extra detail, you have some more complex edges and angles discussed. These are particularly relevant to the 13 quilt projects that are included. Refreshingly, this book does not urge you to be concerned with your colour choices, rather to test-drive them by laying your fabrics out and seeing what goes together. However, if that’s a little out of your comfort zone, then the fabrics used are all referenced so you will be able to source them. The quilts featured are all modern and colourful in design with detailed cutting instructions, and the blocks laid out in order. Suggestions are also given as to how you can quilt each piece. I liked the variety of bright colours with bold patterns, and found the addition of a more muted male-orientated quilt a good contrast to cover all areas of interest. * Workshop On The Web *April 2015 This book makes paper piecing an extremely approachable and attractive prospect from the first page. The 13 featured designs are exciting and consciously modern, highlighting the versatility and usefulness of paper piecing as a technique. Particularly effective is Amy Garro's use of ombre, the graduation between one colour, or value, and another (as you can see on the cover project, Icy Waters). It's something we hadn't really experimented with before but paper piecing is the ideal way to try it out and we were very pleased with the results. Several of the featured projects feature this technique, some more subtly than others - all quite entrancing. Amy has structured the book very simply; the projects get more difficult as you move through the book. However, she does stress that a confident quilter can achieve any of them and we'd definitely back that up. For a paper piecing collection that will inspire you to expand your horizons a little, you need look no further. * Popular Patchwork *July 2015 The 13 quilts are foundation pieced with large blocks, usually 12" square. These are bold designs, a 64" square has 160 diamonds, each 8" by 4 1/2. Foundation piecing gives sharp points to the stars, diamonds and overlapping triangles. The introduction gives sound advice on paper, stitch size and threads . The fabric pieces are not cut to shape they are squares and rectangles, perhaps wasteful but easier to prepare. The sewing directions are clear and easy to follow. The patterns are printing on two separate pull out sheets. There are close up photos of the quilting. Each quilt has several possible quilt designs and suggestions for threads. * Patchwork & Quilting *Table of ContentsDedication Acknowledgements Introduction Choosing Your Fabrics Tools & Preparation Paper-Piecing Basics Finishing Your Quilts Projects Diamonds and Emeralds I Diamonds and Emeralds II Ceiling tiles Squareburst Apple Stars Baby Jacks Icy Waters The Bachelor Little Itty Bitties Tied Down Faceted Jewels II Jumping Jacks Faceted Jewels I Sources About the Author

Book SynopsisShowcase a spectrum of color with innovative rainbow quilts that awaken the senses. With color inspiration as you’ve never seen before, this collection of modern designs features striking projects perfect for your favorite designer fabrics. Fourth-generation quilter Rebecca Bryan shares 14 modern quilts that take their cues from the color wheel. From modern-traditional to improvisational and liberated layouts, these saturated patchwork quilts breathe new life into the lucky rainbow. Arrange your fabric in a way that honors nature’s prism, or take liberties as you mix in neutrals, substitute related hues, or experiment with color intensity. Bryan’s quilts will inspire you to play with jewel tones, pastels, and even neons as you incorporate a modern rainbow in your quilting projects!Trade ReviewMay 2015 A great book that champions bold colour choices, Modern Rainbow zings with style. The fourteen featured quilts are fantastic examples of strong colour combinations and you're sure to find a projects or two that you feel you have to create in its well-designed pages. There's a growing and encouraging trend for quilters and authors to encourage enthusiasm over technical perfection, and Rebecca Bryan, whilst providing a wealth of helpful detail and advice, continues that trend. The quilts here are, on a technical level, very accomplished, but they roar with vibrant passion. There are traditionally inspired projects, modern and more freeform projects featured; all them bristle with delicious colour choices, quilts you'll not only want to make but also use and show off. In playing with colour so effectively and subverting the clichés of the rainbow colour set, Rebecca has triumphed with her selections here. The Lucy in the Sky quilt, that plays with bright primary colours against black and white, is a particular favourite, and Monstar actually looks like it might radiate animatedly like a neon sign, such is the sense of movement. * Popular Patchwork *Table of ContentsContents Dedication Acknowledgments Preface Introduction Basics Using the Spectrum in Quilts Tools and Materials Techniques and Sewing Basics Modern Traditional Quilts Lucy in the Sky Bubbles Irish + Rainbow Streak The {In}Visible Rainbow Modern Quilts Huckleberry Flame In the Throne Room Ducks in a Row Improvisational and Liberated Quilts Wavelength Rainbow Remix MonStar Icarus Star The Impossible Rainbow Template Patterns Resources Fabric and Supplies Bibliography About the Author

Book SynopsisTake your machine’s walking foot for a walk on the wild side and move beyond basic stitch-in-the-ditch quilting! In her follow-up to best-selling Foolproof Machine Quilting, award-winning author Mary Mashuta teaches you how to quilt attractive lines, curves, and geometric shapes with a walking foot. The book includes a multitude of designs, each adapted for walking-foot quilting and marked with clock icons to indicate the skill level and time required to accomplish it. This visual guide provides an inspirational gallery of 30 finished quilts and is enhanced by detailed photos of successfully quilted blocks, center panels, sashing, borders, and corners.Trade ReviewThere is no pencil or chalk marking on the quilts. Tape and freezer paper templates only are used. Detailed instructions about threads and needles are followed by paper folding techniques showing how to make the templates. Simple commercial templates can also be transferred to freezer paper. This is not continuous line quilting. The designs are often built up with pattern upon pattern and decorative stitching. Later complex Sashiko designs are added. There are clear diagrams, grading the designs from quick to time consuming. The book provides full-size templates where necessary, full instructions with clear photos and diagrams. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *July 2016 The six design techniques are based on the acronym SCRAPS. Style is a personal choice, traditional, geometric patterns, folky etc. Constrast, more important than colour. Use a camera to check out colour values. Repetition, use one colour or shape in every block. Accent, one fabric to unite blocks e.g. as in sashing. Palette, limit colours to two or three. Selevedges are perhaps the mopst surprising, cut selvedges together by layering them to make striped fabric. Every area has two or more quilts for each technique.
