  • Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia A

Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia A

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHumanising Mental Health Care in Australia is a unique and innovative contribution to the healthcare literature that outlines the trauma-informed approaches necessary to provide a more compassionate model of care for those who suffer with mental illness. The impact of abuse and trauma is frequently overlooked in this population, to the detriment of both individual and society. This work highlights the importance of recognising such a history and responding humanely. The book explores the trauma-informed perspective across four sections. The first outlines theory, constructs and effects of abuse and trauma. The second section addresses the effects of abuse and trauma on specific populations. The third section outlines a diverse range of individual treatment approaches. The final section takes a broader perspective, examining the importance of culture and training as well as the organisation and delivery of services. Written in an accessible style by a diverse group of national and international experts, Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia is an invaluable resource for mental health clinicians, the community managed and primary health sectors, policy makers and researchers, and will be a helpful reference for people who have experienced trauma and those who care for them.Trade ReviewThe learning from this book will also enable others to develop a greater understanding of the appropriate approach to the treatment of people suffering complex trauma. The Honourable Peter McClellan, AM, QC, Chair, Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.Every mental health clinician and health policy maker and administrator in the country should read Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia. Set out in four sections, it is an easy to read, informative and important text about the impact of trauma on mental health, and why it is important to recognise it and respond appropriately, at both an individual level and a systems level. No matter what your background, if you are interested in how to improve the delivery of compassionate mental health care, I guarantee you will find true ‘pearls of wisdom’ in this book.Dr Peggy Brown, AO, Former Chief Executive Officer, National Mental Health CommissionThe title of this book, Humanising Mental Health Care In Australia, embraces a deep and overdue imperative in mental health care, not only in Australia but around the world. The paradox of surging momentum of awareness of mental illness contrasting with the increasingly poor quality of mental health care underlines the urgent need for reform and a more sophisticated approach. We have lurched from a brainless to a mindless psychiatry when we need a much more sophisticated blend, which transcends the old false dichotomies. The centrality and potency of trauma in creating and embedding mental illness is reflected in this high quality monograph which captures a wide range of Australian expertise in a balanced yet passionate way. Other biological, psychological and social dimensions are also crucial if we are to humanise mental health care, however trauma is the most likely one to be suppressed or denied, so affirmative action is required. This book supports such affirmative action. Courage, scholarship and skill are essential if the mission to humanise mental health care is to succeed. This book is an essential resource in this mission.Professor Patrick McGorry, AO, Executive Director, OrygenTable of ContentsA Plea About the Editors List of Contributors Acknowledgments Editors’ Notes Foreword Peter McClellan, AM, QC Introduction Richard Benjamin Part 1: Theory and Constructs 1. Each chapter is meant to surprise the reader and help him see the world in a new way. Many varieties of imagination are explored -- the spiritual, the relational, the dreamworld, the aesthetic and the adaptive. The author offers space to reflect, to daydream, to remember; space to pursue goals, to make new connections; space to take risks and space to be wrong. The psychotherapist is encouraged to find her own voice, be poetic, dare to create, converse with other disciplines and, most especially, enter the world of dreams. This is all passed onto the patient as the dyad enters the intersubjective field. Both scholarly and practical, this volume elegantly and persuasively synthesizes for the first time research in many fields, including spirituality and Kabbalah, neuroscience, the arts, biology and artificial intelligence, to give an in de

Book SynopsisHumanitarian aid workers are trying to make a difference in an increasingly dangerous world. Psychosocial Support for Humanitarian Aid Workers: A Roadmap of Trauma and Critical Incident Care highlights the risks of such work, educates professionals responsible for their duty of care, and brings together current thinking to promote collaborative working to support the carers of our world. From the humanitarian aid worker trying to organise support amongst chaos, to the professional offering a safe place for recovery, all of these individuals are at risk of becoming traumatised. Therefore, it is vital that we recognise the psychological risks on these individuals, and that they recognise how they can support themselves, so they can continue to function in the work that they do. This book can be used as a trauma awareness guide for all staff whose work exposes them â directly or indirectly â to trauma, and therefore becomes a risk to their physical or mental wellbeing.Psychosocial Support for Humanitarian Aid Workers will appeal to all those working in the field of humanitarian aid, counsellors and psychotherapists, emergency first responders, as well as those who are looking to support themselves after surviving trauma. • Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense

Taylor & Francis Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn sharp contrast with the current top-down medicalized method to treating addiction, this book presents the felt sense polyvagal model (FSPM), a paradigm-shifting, bottom-up approach that considers addiction as an adaptive attempt to regulate emotional states and trauma. The felt sense polyvagal model draws from Porges'' polyvagal theory, Gendelin''s felt sense, and Lewis'' learning model of addiction to offer a graphically illustrated and deeply embodied way of conceptualizing and treating addiction through supporting autonomic regulation. This model de-pathologizes addiction as it teaches embodied practices through tapping into the felt sense, the body's inner wisdom. Chapters first present a theoretical framework and demonstrate the graphic model in both clinician and client versions and then teach the clinician how to use the model in practice by providing detailed treatment strategies. This text's informed, compassionate approach to undersTrade Review"Reframing addiction and its treatment through the lens of Experiential Psychotherapy, Polyvagal Theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology and Imago Relationship Therapy, Jan Winhall has produced a brilliant synthesis and expansion of addiction theory and treatment that should be read by all therapists, not just addiction specialists." —Harville Hendrix, PhD, and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD, authors of Doing Imago Relationship Therapy in the Space Between "In this insightful volume Jan Winhall brings together the essence of groundbreaking modern therapeutic practices with her own decades of hard-won clinical experience to fashion a new, deeply humane and promising model of addiction treatment, illustrated by poignant clinical vignettes." — Gabor Maté, MD, is the author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction. "In Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model Jan Winhall introduces a new strategy to treat addiction that brilliantly integrates Gendlin’s classic concept of a felt sense with Polyvagal Theory. The author shares her intellectual journey in which unique insights transform two disparate perspectives into obvious complements leading to a powerful treatment model. As Polyvagal Theory gives the language of neuroscience to Gendlin’s felt sense, the phenomenological world of Gendlin becomes transformed by Polyvagal Theory into observable shifts in autonomic state. The product of this creative journey is an integrated therapeutic strategy with the potential to decode the wisdom of the body with its full repertoire of survival reactions into positive outcomes that promote optimal mental and physical health. These successes are highlighted by new abilities to co-regulate with others that lead to successful trusting relationships." —Stephen W. Porges, PhD, Distinguished University Scientist, founding director, Traumatic Stress Research Consortium, Kinsey Institute, Indiana University Bloomington; professor of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill "Brave and revolutionary in her thinking, Jan Winhall has written a compelling book on addiction—a must-read for both clinicians and the general public alike. Compassionate, wise and profound, this book will leave its mark for years to come." —Ann Dowsett Johnsonis an award-winning journalist, and newly trained trauma psychotherapist. She is the bestselling author of Drink, A Woman’s Intimate Journey with Alcohol. "Jan Winhall has developed a powerful healing model that integrates polyvagal theory and felt sense experience. The model comes to life in this beautifully written book. It engages you in a process of discovery that helps you make it your own from the inside out." —Serge Prengel, LMHC, is a psychotherapist trained in Focusing, Core Energetics and Somatic Experiencing. He is a co-editor of Defining Moments For Therapists and the editor of the Relational Implicit & Somatic Psychotherapy podcast. "This is an inspiring book that invites therapists to see addiction freshly, not as a disease but as a way of regulating the nervous system to adapt to the person’s social context. Jan combines Porges’ polyvagal theory with Gendlin’s Focusing-oriented therapy in a creative manner that embraces both theory and practice. Her models for understanding and working with addiction are brought to life with case examples, personal sharing, and invitations to the reader to explore their own experience and understanding of the subject." —Peter Afford, author of Therapy in the Age of Neuroscience."Jan Winhall’s book is wise, emotionally compelling and hopeful. I highly recommend it to any clinician who wants to expand their therapeutic toolkit for addressing addictive behaviour." —Andrew Tatarsksy, PhD, founder and director, The Center for Optimal Living."Jan Winhall blends Gendlinian bottom-up process of felt sensing with Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory. Her book is both broad and deep and a remarkable contribution to the Field of Addiction. Jan’s wise and heartfelt human presence is fully embodied throughout the book as she takes us on her own journey over 40 years as a psychotherapist. Clinicians will be able to easily take in these fresh clinical avenues, perspectives and practical clinical treatment methods. I will continue to savor this book as a theoretical resource and as a clinician’s handbook for treating Addictions." —Karen Whalen, PhD, www.relationalwholebodyfocusing.com"This book is a powerful illustration of Eugene Gendlin’s ‘Thinking at the Edge’ methodology for working with the Felt Sense. The integration of Porges Polyvagal theory with the author’s bodily knowing creates a brilliant model for working with trauma and addiction. Her courage to challenge the disease model benefits all who are impacted by addiction. The writing is elegant, comprehensive, and touching in a transformative way." — Dr. Evelyn Fendler-Lee, www.fendler-lee.com "Based on Porges' biologically-based theory of trauma, this book shows how addiction is a brilliantly adaptive way to ‘bear the unbearable’ rather than a sickness. Integrating this framework with her intuitive grasp of body-centered therapy, Winhall helps us both reinterpret and treat this most formidable of habits." —Marc Lewis, PhD, author of The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction is Not a DiseaseTable of ContentsA Prologue: My Women’s Group; Chapter 1. Book SynopsisTherapeutic Arts in Pregnancy, Birth and New Parenthood explores the use of arts in relation to infertility, pregnancy, childbirth and new parenthood. It is the first book to bring all these subjects together into one accessible volume with an international perspective. The book looks at the role of the arts in health with respect to the pregnancy journey, from conception to new parenthood. It introduces readers to the ways in which art is being used with women who are experiencing different stages of childbearing â who may be unable to conceive and are struggling with infertility treatment, or who experience miscarriage and loss, a traumatic birth, or grief over the loss of a baby. It also elucidates how art-making offers a means for women to express and understand their changed sense of self-identity and sexuality as a result of pregnancy and motherhood. The book has an international compass and is essential reading for arts therapy trainees and arts in health courses and will also be of interest to other health professionals and artists.Trade ReviewThis is a very important international contribution to the theory and practice of the arts and arts therapies, addressing the experiences of women over the whole field of childbearing. The editor acknowledges that ideals around pregnancy and childbirth are highly contested, and as can be expected from Professor Hogan, she gives a prominent place to the social, political and cultural context in which childbearing takes place. Book SynopsisGroup Art Therapy: Practice and Research is the first textbook of its kind, taking into account practice-based evidence and using a transtheoretical approach to present a range of art therapy group interventions. The book covers essential topics including leadership, art making, successful therapeutic factors, and the basic stages of developing and facilitating groups. Adhering to the most up-to-date educational standards and ethical codes of art therapy, the book covers the full range of settings and art therapy approaches. This text will prepare art therapy graduate students and practitioners to lead groups in a variety of settings, theoretical approaches, and applications.Trade Review"Megan A. Robb’s book on the practice and research of art therapy groups is both timely and much needed. Beginning with an historical analysis of the evolution of group therapy, Robb effectively weaves together the neglected contributions of Black and brown art therapists and reviews the many formats in which group art therapy has been conceptualized and practiced. The book eloquently bridges theory and practice and advances diverse possibilities for art therapy." —Savneet K. Talwar, professor, Department of Art Therapy and Counseling, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA"In a new book on group art therapy, Robb brings a critical lens to previous texts that largely focus on a medical and psychodynamic model, missing out on the rich history of using group art therapy to build relationships, bridge communities, and address social issues. By including a range of theoretical orientations, multiple views of how to use the art, and a more humanistic view of membership and leadership in a group, this book will serve to inform and educate a new generation of art therapists to expand our understanding of art therapy." — Sarah E. Book SynopsisMen’s Accounts of Boarding School is a collection of writings by men about their childhood experiences of being sent away to boarding school. Trade ReviewMany readers will be shocked by this unique record of pain and shame, while it will also inspire awe for those who were brave enough to share their stories. It is a record of the hitherto concealed legacy of seamless transgenerational harm to families and of a social mindset that still perverts British politics. It will be a privilege for the uninitiated to read and should enlighten therapists beginning to engage with the normalised mental-health problems resulting from how the British educate their elites. Nick Duffell, author of The Making of Them and Wounded LeadersEach of the contributions to this book gives a vivid sense of the lasting distress borne by children who experienced early boarding. These tales offer a nuanced picture of an intergenerational scandal; a portrait of neglect and abuse of children across the world, all in the name of privileged education. The pain of these adult men as they look back and reflect on their child selves is profound. Professor Joy Schaverien, author of :Boarding School Syndrome: The Psychological Trauma of the ‘Privileged’ ChildThese stories vividly portray the deep wounding that the boarding school experience has on children. There are common themes of bewilderment at leaving home and the difficulties of living, without love,in an institution. They describe ways in which boarding school has impacted on their adult lives, the sense they have made of their experiences and about their inability to trust, feel safe with others and love another…even those closest to them. This is a deep wounding to the soul. Book SynopsisThe Contemporary Relational Supervisor, 2nd edition, is an empirically based, academically sophisticated, and learner-friendly text on the cutting edge of couple and family therapy supervision. This extensively revised second edition provides emerging supervisors with the conceptual and pragmatic tools to engage a new wave of therapists, helping them move forward together into a world of highly systemic, empirically derived, relational, developmental, and integrative supervision and clinical practice. The authors discuss major supervision models and approaches, evaluation, ethical and legal issues, and therapist development. They present methods that help tailor and extend supervision practices to meet the clinical, institutional, economic, and cultural realities that CFT therapists navigate. Filled with discussions and exercises to engage readers throughout, as well as updates surrounding telehealth and social justice, this practical text helps emerTrade ReviewReading this book reminded me just how much the literature on supervision is siloed, with the consequence that those of us in psychology are missing excellent work on supervision being written by our couples and family therapy colleagues (and presumably, vice versa). Lee and Nelson have drawn on their rich clinical experience and deep knowledge of the literature to write a book that not only provides a comprehensive overview of the practice of supervision, but does so in a clear, practical, and engaging way. I strongly recommend it to anyone, including fellow psychologists and psychology students, who want to deepen their knowledge of supervision.Rod GoodyearEmeritus ProfessorUniversity of Southern California and University of RedlandsContemporary Relational Supervision is a must read for supervisors of all levels. It provides a deep dive into the evidence-based literature for best practice in systemic clinical supervision. Essential topics related to diversity and inclusion are integrated throughout the text which is essential for the practice of Socially Just Supervision. Toni Schindler Zimmerman, PhD, LMFTMFT Program Director, Colorado State UniversityContemporary Relational Supervision (2nd ed.) is nothing short of a revolution in clinical supervision. No other text on the market covers the depth and breadth of topics tackled by Lee and Nelson in this impressive volume, encouraging readers to cultivate a personal style of supervision as well as guidance on highly relevant topics such as telesupervision. Written with incredible clarity, attention to context, and refreshing humility and charm, this text reinvents relational supervision and is a must-have for any systemic therapist beginning their supervisory journey.Katherine M. Hertlein Professor, Couple and Family Therapy Program University of Nevada, Las VegasIf Lee and Nelson’s Contemporary Relational Supervision was a client family in a session, this text would read like its genogram, with the authors skillfully laying out for us who in the field did what, when, and how—along with all of the nuance and detail one appreciates in the best kind of genogram narrative. The history of systems supervision ideas is only part of the package; in this book, Lee and Nelson’s scholarship on the practice of supervision in family therapy is as comprehensive and engaging as the suggested exercises and tasks at the end of every chapter. Just as with the best of genograms, this book invites the reader to consider the patterns of supervision scholarship and practice across the generations, while also inspiring us to make our own contribution to its sound future. Laurie L Charlés, Global Family Systems & Psychosocial Resilience, Project LeadMassachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (MGHIHP), Visiting LecturerThe Contemporary Relational Supervisor serves as bridge between the roots of couple and family therapy training and the ways of being that encourage ethical and equitable supervision practices. As a Canadian C/MFT and supervisor, it is challenging to find clinical and supervisory resources that speak to the regulatory and training contexts in Canada. In addition to pragmatic and gate-keeping roles as a supervisor, finding a scaffold on which to structure and communicate the how and why of relationally-based supervision within our regional, personal and professional environments is important. In reading this revised text, particularly Part III Cultural Considerations, I found myself reviewing my scaffold and revisiting the differences that make a difference personally, professionally and systemically. Said differently, this text places supervisors’ way of being in a recursive loop with the systems in which training C/MFTs occurs, the hopes and expectations of those who seek that training and the skills, knowledge and attitudes that make systemic practice a worthwhile contribution to relational well-being. Sharon RamsayPrivate Practice, Toronto, ONLee and Nelson establish a clear foundation for systemic supervision and therapies. This is an outstanding resource that uncannily speaks to both the seasoned supervisor and those working to hone their craft. The book will be incredibly valuable to new supervisors as they bridge the transition from training students to mentoring new clinicians. This work is theoretically cogent, emphasizing social awareness, and elaborating on the distinctive patterns within supervisory relationships. Each chapter opens my mind to research opportunities that could support systemic supervision training. This will be seminal literature for training doctoral students, educators, and mentors. I am grateful for the publication of this innovative work. It is accessible and written in common-sense language, yet its evidence-base is broad and scientifically sound. Dr Howells has managed to cut through those aspects of mental health care that can mystify and pathologise, to focus on the central issue that matters most to us all: how we and those we work with can live rich, full and healthy emotional lives.' Peter Cairns, Clinical Psychologist, Norfolk, UK‘Given the importance of our emotional life to our sense of wellbeing and resilience it's surprising we give so little thought to understanding our feelings and how they work. This volume explores how the principles and values of pragmatic philosophy serve as orienting perspectives for critical thinking in contemporary psychotherapy and clinical practice. Drawing on the contributions of William James and John Dewey, Neuroscience, Psychotherapy, and Clinical Pragmatism introduces a model of clinical pragmatism emphasizing the individuality of the person, open-ended dialogue, experiential learning, and the practical outcomes of ideas and methods. In a second part, chapters show how recent developments in neuroscience and interpersonal neurobiology deepen our understanding of change and growth in accord with the principles of clinical pragmatism. Finally, the volume reviews paradigms of psychotherapy across the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic traditions. Case studies show how the pluralist orientation of clinical pragmatism enlarges concepts of therapeutic action. This text has been written for psychotherapists

Book SynopsisTransgenerational Trauma and Therapy presents the transgenerational, psychological impacts of trauma, and the clinical work on it. The book's expansive insight explores the psychology of the massive, collective trauma, and provides new ways of understanding the serious after-effects of man-made suffering. In this book, Bakà and Zana employ their original concept, the transgenerational atmosphere, to fully comprehend many familiar phenomena in a new theoretical framework, exploring the psychological impact of trauma on the first generation, the mode of transmission, the effects on future generations, and therapeutic considerations. Crucially, Transgenerational Trauma and Therapy explores the psychological effects of collective, societal traumas on whole groups of individuals. Beginning with the direct, deep psychological effects of individual trauma, and then exploring the impact of collective trauma over generations , it deals particularly with the role of the social environment in the processing of trauma, as well as its hereditary transmission.Rich in clinical material and methodological suggestions, Transgenerational Trauma and Therapy will appeal to mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, and social workers, in addition to professors in other academic disciplines, such as sociology, history, philosophy, and anthropology.Trade Review"Families, like nations, also transmit values, culture and creativity to future generations. Book SynopsisSexualities: Contemporary Psychoanalytic Perspectives presents a broad selection of contemporary psychoanalytic thinking on sexuality from a wide range of psychoanalytic traditions. Sexuality remains at the heart of much psychoanalytic theory and practice but it is a complex and controversial subject. Edited by Alessandra Lemma and Paul E. Lynch, this volume includes a range of international contributions that examine contemporary issues and trace common themes needed to understand any sexuality, including the basics of sexuality, and the myriad ways in which sexuality is lived. The clinical examples provided here demonstrate contemporary psychoanalytic techniques that uncover meanings that are both fresh and enlightening, and address heterosexuality, homosexuality, gender, and perversion from a psychoanalytic perspective. Divided into four parts, the book includes the following: Historical context Foundational concepts: Contemporary Trade Review"In this remarkable new collection of essays, Alessandra Lemma and Paul E. Lynch have provided us with an up-to-the-minute compendium of current psychoanalytic thinking regarding sexualities. Desire, developmental pathways of gender and sexual orientation, prostitution, perversion, sexual excitement, intimacy, and many other themes are considered from various perspectives that are unfailingly enlightening. Psychoanalysis has struggled with this entire area because of our fear of looking at what is in front of our eyes. This extraordinary book helps us see what we may prefer to avoid in ourselves and in others. It deserves a place on the bookshelf of every psychoanalytically-oriented clinician and will surely be used as a textbook for courses in psychoanalytic institutes. - Glen O. Gabbard, MD. - Training and Supervising Analyst at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston. This book sets a new standard. Contributors portray extraordinary empathy for and rich clinical documentation of the wide range of psychic and behavioral usages of sexuality and gender. They candidly acknowledge wrestling, like Freud, with old feelings -- discomfort with some current culturally-contested formulations while being at the forefront of contestation. Several chapters provide an original, creative integration of abstract theories about maternal sexuality with research on attachment, mirroring and mentalization and on-the-ground observations of infantile sexuality. I was grateful for recognition of Stoller's contribution and for necessary, and too rare, discussions of the relations between sociology, sexology and psychoanalysis. - Nancy J Chodorow, PhD. Training and Supervising Analyst, Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. "The book make a compelling argument for how psychoanalytic conepts such as mirroring and revisiting the Oedipal Complex could help us understand sexual variations (a term preferred by some sexologists to "perversions"), gender, and homosexuality... The current sexual climate requires a reevaluation of theories to explain human sexuality to keep pace with changes in issues such as gay and lesbian rights, sexual dysfunctions, and gender issues. Lemma and Lynch have managed to provide updated and integrative discussions on these issues. Lemma nad Lynch have managed to provide updated and integrative discussions on these issues. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisDesigned for psychotherapists and counsellors in training, An Introduction to the Therapeutic Frame clarifies the concept of the frame - the way of working set out in the first meeting between therapist and client. This Classic Edition of the book includes a brand new introduction by the author.Anne Gray, an experienced psychotherapist and teacher, uses lively and extensive case material to show how the frame can both contain feelings and further understanding within the therapeutic relationship. She takes the reader through each stage of therapeutic work, from the first meeting to the final contact, and looks at those aspects of management that beginners often find difficult, such as fee payment, letters and telephone calls, supervision and evaluation. Her practical advice on how to handle these situations will be invaluable to trainees as well as to those involved in their training.Trade Review"It has been a pleasure to re-read Anne Gray's book. It is beautifully written, admirably clear and exquisitely thoughtful. Gray's purpose is to demonstrate the value of containment of anxiety provided by the therapeutic frame and to illustrate, by a striking series of case studies, the values of the frame and the consequences of a failure to maintain it. With remarkable humility she describes mistakes she has made and their consequences. Absolutely the most engaging aspect of the book is Gray's authorial voice, which is not dogmatic or prescriptive, but on the contrary authoritative and facilitative. This is a book which has plenty of life left in it yet."Julia Buckroyd, Emeritus Professor of Counselling, University of Herfordshire and Fellow of BACP.'This is a rewarding and wise book offering a thoughtful approach to the everyday challenge of managing patient related correspondence, telephone calls, initial consultations, fees and endings whilst remaining vigilantly anchored in the transference when it comes to understanding what these activities might also mean to the troubled mind in search of competent help."Anthony Cantle, Psychoanalyst and Fellow of the Institute of Psycho-Analysis, London."This is an essential textbook for trainee therapists and experienced practitioners alike. Anne Gray conveys in accessible and human terms the fundamental significance of the frame in all our therapeutic endeavours. I wholeheartedly recommend this book." • 101 Healing Stories Using Metaphors in Therapy

John Wiley & Sons Inc 101 Healing Stories Using Metaphors in Therapy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA collection of stories, grouped by therapeutic outcome, for therapists to use with clients searching for solutions to or enlightenment about their problems.Trade Review"George Burns' 101 Healing Stories: Using metaphors in Therapy will reignite the spirit that can enhance everyone's commitment to help people help themselves." "For anyone planning (or even considering) the implementation of metaphors in healing, this book is a must-read. It provides a comprehensive look at the topic -- in a very user friendly style." (Brian Alman, Ph.D., author of The Six Steps To Freedom, Self-Hypnosis, and Thin Meditations I was captivated by this book from the Introduction to the final page. George Burns is a rarity. He is not only a master storyteller, he is able to do what few artists blessed with a disciplined genius can do. He can describe what he did and why he did it. This book is like taking a master course in metaphor and therapeutic storytelling, complete with suggested exercises to individualize and expand the learning. The format of the book follows the traditional teaching model that makes learning easier: Tell what you are going to do, do it, then describe what you did. The book is divided into three parts: [An overview of ] Metaphor Therapy, Healing Stories, and Creating Your Own Metaphors. Since I supervise and teach students and interns and conduct workshops for licensed mental health professionals, I decided to take the book out for a "test drive" and used this book as the core of my training for a semester. I started with the format found in the introduction. Unlike most books, I found the Introduction section crucial to the reading of 101 Healing Stories. It outlines not only how one was to use the book, but how to approach the creation, development, and presentation of therapeutic stories. In my class, this outline was invaluable for those students who found the task of therapeutic metaphor initially daunting. It outlined the process they were about to experience in small, reasonable, easily understood steps. It also reminded the more seasoned therapists of Erickson's admonition of the need to create metaphors for the individual client, rather than just apply a predetermined intervention to a diagnostic category. In that same way, the Introduction presents an open mindset for the reader to experience the stories as examples and stimuli rather than as stock stories to indiscriminately inject into clients. Part One, Metaphor Therapy, presents the rationale and uses of storytelling. It succinctly lists Ten Guidelines for Effective Storytelling including Six Guidelines for the Storyteller's Voice. These guidelines were very helpful for my beginning students and nice reminders that the more seasoned therapists could review. Part Two, Healing Stories, contained ten examples each of ten general goals of Healing Stories: Enhancing Empowerment, Acquiring Acceptance, Reframing Negative Attitudes, Changing Patterns of Behavior, Learning from Experience, Attaining Goals, Cultivating Compassion, Developing Wisdom, Caring for yourself, and Enhancing Happiness. Each of the stories was preceded by an outline of its therapeutic characteristics: Problems Addressed, Resources Developed and Outcomes Offered. This format makes it easy to teach and to learn. By listing the therapeutic characteristics prior to telling the story and reviewing the therapeutic characteristics afterwards, the pattern of the development of therapeutic stories (described in Part three of the book) becomes evident. The stories themselves are delightful. They are filled with humor and insight. Part Three is Creating Your Own Metaphors. It includes How to Do It and How Not to Do It and Using the PRO-Approach to Create Your Own Healing Stories. These sections are a structured review of what is intuitively suggested in Part Two. I found this very useful in translating the intuitive feelings that were stimulated by the story formats into concrete story-making skills. The students were able to follow the suggestions and easily generated their own stories. Part Three ends with Story 101. This is a wonderful story that is worth the price of the book. It combines the essence of Erickson with the heat of Burns. The book concludes with a significant list of References And Professional Literature On Metaphors. These include folktales, cross-cultural myths, legends, stories for children, religious and spiritual stories, videotapes and internet websites. This section reminded me of Erickson's observation that it was well and good for a therapist to trust his unconscious, but the unconscious needs to be fed regularly. Burns truly provides more than enough nutrition to keep the unconscious well fed. My test ride of the book was a resounding success. Both the beginning students and seasoned therapists loved the content and format of 101 Healing Stories. They found it easy to understand, entertaining and they were able to create their own stories that heal. If you want to develop your storytelling skills to the level of an art, I can recommend no finer book. And, it is a good read!! (Review by Richard Landis) "George W. Burns is indeed a master in the art of using stories for healing purposes." (Metapsychology Review, January 2003)Table of ContentsForeword By Michael D. Yapko, PhD. Introduction.
