Mandrake of Oxford Dreams: Exploring uncharted depths of

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMany people are interested in dreams but few have much of interest to say about them. This book is different and worth attention. It began as a simple question, any one of us might ask: Why do some people have success and money, while others spend their lives scraping spare change together for the most basic of things? Why do certain people always seem to make the right decisions & come out on top, even when they get some things wrong? (p8) The surprising answer lay in the world of dreams, their interpretation and of how some dreamers have made self-analysis such as useful personal resource. The author shares many personal experiences as well as those drawn from a general survey of peoples dream world. She explores the entire scene from Sigmund Freud up to more recent guides for the perplexed. She goes deep, revealing over 100 dream symbols, anything from new houses, through dream lovers to aliens. Not revealing the content of a dream to another, at least until you have interpreted and gained from it. This, just one secret she gleaned. Dreams are postcards, straight from your subconscious, telling you about you. One of her informants told a colleague, whom she had hitherto trusted, of a strange dream she had just had about a mutual colleague. then watched mortified as her otherwise trusted but obviously jealous colleague, strode boldly to the dream subject, and told them all the gory details. But the dream was not necessarily about anyone in particular, their appearance was most likely the personification of anxiety about an unfamiliar working environment. A secret unwanted admirer or personification of someones angst - better not say anything? The author is drawing upon the wisdom of sages and writers from times past. All of which shows how dreams reveal the blocks that are holding one''s life up. Along the way, she explores those uncharted depths of consciousness. And shows how successful people have always tuned into the subconscious, conversing with so-called dream counsellors who really did change their future.

  • Myths of Mindfulness

    Sequoia Books Myths of Mindfulness

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisInterest in mindfulness has been booming in recent decades, but a lot of misconceptions have grown up around this ancient practice, some of which can cause serious harm. In this book, clinical psychologist, researcher, and Zen master Dr. Richard Sears carefully separates the myths from the facts. He explores myths about the origins of mindfulness, what mindfulness is, how it is similar to and different from other techniques, the practice of mindfulness, its magical and mystical effects, mindfulness and mental and physical health, and about using mindfulness in daily life. Far more than just debunking myths, Dr. Sears points out the profound ways that mindfulness can help us move through our struggles and enrich our lives with inspiring stories and practical tips. The realities of mindfulness are so much more fascinating than the myths.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Myths about the Origins of Mindfulness Mindfulness is strictly a religious practice. Mindfulness comes from Buddhism. If you are not practicing the full ethical code of Buddhism, you are not doing real mindfulness. Mindfulness practice makes you a Zen master. Chapter 2: Myths about What Mindfulness Is Mindfulness makes you feel better. Mindfulness makes you feel worse. Mindfulness is about thinking positive. Mindfulness makes you happy. Mindfulness is about having a clear, empty, or blank mind. Mindfulness is about changing consciousness. When you are mindful, you rise above your emotions. Mindfulness requires nonjudgmental acceptance of things. Chapter 3: Myths about How Mindfulness is Similar and Different Mindfulness is just breathing. Mindfulness is the same as meditation. Mindfulness is about visualizing peaceful scenes and positive outcomes. Mindfulness is the same as relaxation. Mindfulness is a kind of self-hypnosis. Chapter 4: Myths about The Practice of Mindfulness Only great saints can do mindfulness - it's not for me. Mindfulness can only be done with formal, daily exercises. Mindfulness takes a great deal of effort. Mindfulness can only be done sitting still. Mindfulness can only be done with eyes closed. Mindfulness exercises have to be at least 45 minutes long. You must move slowly to be mindful. Chapter 5: Myths about the Magical and Mystical Effects of Mindfulness Practice Mindfulness gives you ESP or magical powers. Mindfulness is a mystical practice that makes you one with the universe. Mindfulness gives you the meaning of life. There are secret, advanced forms of mindfulness. Chapter 6: Myths about Mindfulness and Mental and Physical Health Mindfulness completely rewires the brain. Mindfulness cures mental disorders. Mindfulness always eliminates chronic pain. Mindfulness cures medical diseases and makes you live a much longer lifespan. Chapter 7: Myths about Mindfulness in Daily Life and Work You can only be mindful in a peaceful setting. It is important to be mindful at all times. If you become too mindful, you will become unfeeling, and lose compassion for others. If someone is mindful, they will forget appointments and responsibilities. It takes years to become mindful. Mindfulness interferes with your ability to work. I don't have time to be mindful.

  • Pursuit of Pleasure: Overcoming a Civilizational

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Pursuit of Pleasure: Overcoming a Civilizational

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIt is a hard psychological fact that the desire for pleasure is the ultimate factor in most of human decision-making. But as dominant as the pleasure principle has been in the cultural development of mankind, its impact has so far never been fully acknowledged. In the hands of a powerful minority that controls global capital flows, pleasure has been turned into the most profitable item for sale, preying on the consumerist desires it helped to create. Re-evaluating the very notion of 'pleasure' and assessing its often sinister influence on the course of our civilisation, this book unveils how the determinants of human behaviour are now in the hands of global marketers whose sole aim is the maximisation of profit, not the personal development of their customers. This powerful book shows how the overcoming of the pleasure principle through the management of pleasure can be the foundation of a new humanist culture in which people are conscious and aware of their choices.

Daimon Verlag Rock Rabbit & the Rainbow: Laurens van der Post

Book SynopsisSir Laurens van der Post, author, film-maker, storyteller of world-wide renown, soldier, prisoner of war, political advisor to heads of state, humanitarian, explorer, conservationist... the list goes on and on. His extraordinary curiosity, his love for the small and the great, and his tremendous feeling and concern for his surroundings and all that they included, set him travelling the lands and the waters of the world, a messenger in search of meaning. He touched and inspired many along the way, some of whom are to be found in the pages of this book. A true man of his time, Sir Laurens was born in 1906 in the interior of South Africa, served in the British forces during World War II, including three-and-a-half years in Japanese captivity, and lived and worked since that time in London, where he died just after celebrating his 90th birthday in December, 1996. ''The Rock Rabbit and The Rainbow'' was originally conceived as a Festschrift, or gift collection of writings, for Sir Laurens by several of his friends and then evolved into its present form, which includes numerous original contributions by Sir Laurens himself.

Book SynopsisThe 14th Congress for Analytical Psychology was held 23-28 August 1998 in the ancient city of Florence, Italy. The theme, ''Destruction and Creation: Personal and Cultural Transformations'', is especially appropriate to the Italian setting, with that nation''s history of destruction, both from nature and from human activity, and its tradition -- especially in Florence -- of creative individuals and institutions. The theme is fitting, also, to the context of Jungian psychology, with its emphasis on these and other pairs of opposites, with their integral role in psychic wholeness. Acknowledging, also, that destruction is indispensable to creation, some Jungians prefer the term ''creative unconscious'' to the traditional ''collective unconscious''.

  • Jung's Apprentice: A Biography of Helton Godwin

Daimon Verlag Jung's Apprentice: A Biography of Helton Godwin

Book SynopsisDr Helton Godwin Baynes was C.G. Jung''s medical assistant in Zurich, becoming the eminent psychiatrist''s close friend and confidante. Baynes introduced Jungian psychology to Britain and led the English Jungian community for twenty years. He started the Jungian Analytical Psychology Club in London (APC) and laid the foundations for a Jungian Medical Society with the three aims of providing therapy, education and research. Baynes was the author of the first two major Jungian books to be written in English: Mythology of the Soul and Germany Possessed, and together with his second wife, Cary, he translated all of Jung''s earlier writings into English. He arranged for Jung to visit England to lecture at the Tavistock Clinic, at the AP Club, to the medical students at Barts Hospital, and at Oxford University. Baynes brought a greater psychological awareness to war-time Britain in his lectures throughout the UK and his religious broadcasts with Archbishop Temple. He was a giant personality. At Cambridge he read medicine; he rowed twice in the boat race and was an outstanding singer. He counted among his friends many of the leading writers, poets, musicians and thinkers of his day. He was a central figure in the avant-garde circles surrounding Rupert Brooke and Arnold Bax. Included in this fascinating account of a charismatic and larger than life personality, there is previously unpublished material from Baynes'' journals relating to his analysis with Jung as well as previously unpublished correspondence between Baynes and Jung. In the words of the composer Arnold Bax, Baynes was ''the most all-round man of his generation''.

  • Edge of the Sacred: Jung, Psyche, Earth

Daimon Verlag Edge of the Sacred: Jung, Psyche, Earth

Book SynopsisDoes the earth have a spirit or soul? Science and rationality have not taught us how to love or care for the earth. The mythic bonds to nature, such as those found in Aboriginal Australian cultures, appear to have real survival value because they bind us to the earth in a meaningful way. When these bonds are destroyed by excessive rationality or a collapse of cultural mythology, we are left alone, outside the community of nature and in an alienated state. Jung was one of the first thinkers of our time to consider the psychic influence of the earth and the conditioning of the mind by place. Inspired by his writings and those of James Hillman, the field of eco-psychology has arisen as a powerful new area of inquiry. This book contributes to global eco-psychology from an Australian perspective.

Jungs concept of the mind-body relationship helps overcome misconceptions about root causes, guilt, and blame. It is important to note that the prevention and treatment of physical diseases are impossible without embracing the human psyche, as exemplified by numerous case studies from psychotherapeutic practice that serve to illustrate the content of this book.

Book SynopsisWe are often not aware of how each of us is filled with wisdom and potential from within. An important goal of painting therapy is to sense impulses from the unconscious and provide them with an opportunity for visual expression. The result, as richly illustrated in this book, can often provide increased awareness of unrealized resources and creative possibilities. On the basis of 10 impressive series of paintings, Ingrid Riedel and Christa Henzler demonstrate how the colors and forms of a painted picture can bring repressed material to the fore and have diagnostic possibilities, along with prognostic aspects. Like dreams, they are essential sources of rich material for therapeutic work in either individual or group settings.

Living Human Heritage Publications Professor Dr. Theodor Abt Princess & Magic Horse: Psychological

Book SynopsisRegina Abt-Baechi presents the psychological interpretation of the three fairy tales The Magic Horse, Ferdinand Faithful and Ferdinand Unfaithful as well as The Goosegirl. Her interpretation is based on the earlier short interpretatins by Barbara Hannah and Marie-Louise von Franz. The author ponders carefully over each motif and symbol ot the fairy tales. She thereby focuses on the Archetypal Basis of the Psyche, connecting it to examples of typical individual experiences. Thus the meaning of the whole fairy tale emerges more and more clearly. Together, the interpretation and the illustrations - painted by the author - convey to the reader the experience, that these archetypal dreamlike stories can become truly alive in one''s soul.

University Press of Southern Denmark Shame on You: A literary perspective on shame and

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisShame and guilt are quintessential human emotions. They are reflective emotions and also what we might call social feelings; they affect individuals as well as collective cultures. Shame and guilt are similar in that they both reveal a failure of the self in regard to common norms. However, shame concerns the self and a persons self-identity, whereas guilt is linked to specific actions towards others. SHAME ON YOU explores shame and guilt in a Western and Scandinavian context focusing on a wide range of authors: from 19th century writers such as Carlo Collodi and Henrik Ibsen through modernist writers such as Frans Kafka, Virginia Woolf, Djuna Barnes and Marguerite Duras to contemporary writers such as Elizabeth Gilbert, Charlotte Roche and Yahya Hassan. The individual chapters focus on the cultural alteration of shame and guilt an alteration that is indicated for example by pointing out the contrast between the repression of sexuality that has historically been prevalent and the demand for enjoyment today. This development also implies a change in the position of the subject. Hence, the focus on shame reveals a change in the subjects relation to him- or herself. The book has a mainly literary perspective, but the first three chapters open with theoretical and historical assessments of shame and guilt.

Aalborg Universitetsforlag Talent Identification: (Un)conscious gold

Book SynopsisTalent identification. A concept dating back to Greek philosophers, now as it was then, is about the ability to identify talent in different contexts. The ability to identify talent has become increasingly popular over the past few years. It has long been considered a crucial parameter for success in sport, but has spread to different contexts such as education, business, and culture. Until recently, research on talent identification (particularly in sports) has been predominantly concerned with finding a recipe for identifying talent in formal circumstances, such as talent testing. However, talent identification is much more than that. Rather, talent identification should be seen as something everyone practices to some extent. Every day. All the time. This book provides an insight into talent identification and puts forward new ways of understanding and approaching talent identification.
