Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Verbal Behavior Approach: How to Teach
Book SynopsisThe Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it.This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child. This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.Trade Review“The Verbal Behavior Approach serves as a practical and thorough guide on the principles of using the Verbal Behavior Approach for children with autism. Difficult terms are translated into easy-to-understand layman's terms, which would be very useful for first- time learners and practicing clinicians unfamiliar with the Verbal Behavior Approach... This book will explain not only to parents, but also to Speech- Language Pathologists and other professionals how to reinforce and encourage communication from children with autism and other disabilities... This book is a “must have” for Speech- Language Pathologists interested in learning about and utilizing the Verbal Behavior Approach. A number of highly specific therapy techniques are presented as well as other relevant topics such as reinforcement and behavior. Packed with useful information and tips, this book is ideal for Speech- Language Pathologists across both clinic and educational settings. The information that is provided in this text is comprehensive, concise and practical and Speech- Language Pathologists will benefit from its wealth of resources included in the appendices. As the need for services with children with autism spectrum disorder continue to grow, Speech- Language Pathologists will require a concise, easy to read resource as this one to become familiar with this approach to effectively teach language to students with autism.” -- International Journal of Behavioral and Consultation Therapy“This book serves to educate family members exceptionally well on several of the most important concepts and foundational ideas of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Ms. Barbera does an outstanding job of explaining why the ABC's (Antecedents-Behaviors-Consequences) of behavior are so important to understand. She is especially good at explaining the importance of determining the function of challenging behaviors. This will help parents as they try to unravel the seeming mysteries of children's behaviors. She also clearly outlines how treatments must match the functions of behaviors, and how appropriate replacement skills must be taught to address the same function... the book is an excellent source of information on Applied Behavior Analysis and on Verbal Behavior. It serves to clear up some major sources of consumer confusion, most notably about Verbal Behavior's embeddedness within ABA. There are countless helpful and well-grounded suggestions for parents who are interested in using this approach with their children.” -- Journal of Early and Intensive Behavior Intervention“This book provides a friendly voice that will assist parents, educators, and other professionals in utilizing these techniques with children with autism. It is a must have for anyone who knows, lives with, or teaches a child with autism spectrum disorder.” -- Kimberly Barnes, PhD, CCC-SLP, Speech and Language Pathologist“The Verbal Behavior Approach is a wonderful book! I typically get glazed over with the intensity of ABA/VB. This was an easy read that provided clear-cut, practical information that families and professionals can effectively use.” -- Traci L. Plunkett, Mother of a son with PDD-NOS“This book accomplishes many things that few such works do–it pairs sound research with concrete examples; is accessible to the expert and novice alike, and touches the heart without sacrificing professionalism.” -- Anne A. Skleder, Ph.D. Provost, Cabrini College“As a dedicated and caring parent, Mary has demonstrated her commitment to all children with autism by writing such a thoughtful and useful book.” -- Rick Kubina, Ph.D., BCBA, Associate Professor, The Pennsylvania State University“Written with style, warmth and real know-how, Mary Barbera has managed to combine valuable therapeutic advice with her own eloquent story.” -- Eustacia Cutler, Author of A Thorn in My Pocket: Temple Grandin's Mother Tells the Family Story“An amazing book that combines detailed instructions for parents on how to get started using ABA/VB with a little bit of emotional support to let them know that they are not alone.” -- Trish Cuce, Mother of a daughter with autism, teacher & consultant for children with Autism, Founder of POAC of PA“An easy to follow guide that works. The Verbal Behavior approach is motivation driven, creating the desire to learn.” -- Kathleen Ricca, M.Ed., parent of a three-year-old boy with autism“One of the most valuable books for parents of children with autism since Let Me Hear Your Voice by Catherine Maurice.” -- Mark Sundberg, Ph.D.,BCBA, Author of the VB-MAPP (2008)“Barbera is not only accurate, but easy to understand... her personal experience in this area makes her explanations and instructions entertaining and easy to apply.” -- Dr. Jack Michael, Professor Emeritus, Western Michigan University“I taught a class on verbal behavior once a year for 25 years. How I wish I could have had this book during that time. It would have made my instruction so much more effective.” -- John O. Cooper, Ed.D., Professor Emeritus of Education, The Ohio State University, Co-Author of Applied Behavior Analysis“With clear, concise explanations and examples, heartfelt stories and helpful resources listed throughout, Mary has provided the community with a nice description of teaching verbal behavior. Every parent of a newly diagnosed child should own a copy of this book.” -- Holly Kibbe, MS, BCBA, Establishing Operations, Inc.“A succinct, intelligible tour of an effective intervention for autistic children through both speech and non-verbal communication. VB is a refinement of B.F. Skinner's pioneering work on language and operates under the conviction that expressive language is behavioral, rather than purely cognitive. Barbera takes Skinner's arcane language and renders it not only clear but convincing” -- Kirkus Reports“Using a behavioral analysis of language as described by B.F. Skinner, this approach teaches language across functions, which Mary explains with easy-to-understand examples and language. Written from the perspective of both a parent and a professional this book will prove valuable to a variety of readers.” -- Catherine B. Doran, MA, CCC/SLP, Speech and Language Pathologist“I highly recommend Mary's book. It is excellent! Although it's very short and easy to read, it seems to cover everything! I'm recommending it to every parent and professional I come in contact with.” -- Sharon Zamrin, M.S.Ed., BCBA“The Verbal Behavior Approach provides useful information and resources for immediate application, accomplishing the book's main objective, providing for rapid implementation of an AVB program.” -- The Behavior Analyst Today“Written with style, warmth and real know-how, Mary Barbera has managed to combine valuable therapeutic advice with her own eloquent story.” -- Eustacia Cutler, author of A Thorn in My Pocket: Temple Grandin's Mother Tells the Family StoryTable of ContentsIntroduction.1. Laurie's book provides the logic for compliance that will be invaluable for parents and teachers. I know this book will become regular bed time reading and be used many times at home and at school. -- Professor Tony AttwoodDr. Laurie clearly understands how children with limited flexibility and difficulty coping think and respond. She has used her clinical experience to teach us how to help these children succeed. Dr. Laurie has provided a format, similar to Social Stories (TM), for reducing stress in daily life and for minimizing conflict stemming from unwritten or everyday rules. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety: A Guide to
Book SynopsisMany people suffer from feelings of stress and anxiety in their everyday lives. For people with Asperger Syndrome (AS), this stress can be particularly difficult to manage. On a daily basis people with AS must fit into a world that seems totally foreign to them and this can increase feelings of alienation and anxiety, making life's challenges especially hard to cope with. The first book on anxiety written specifically for adults with Asperger Syndrome, this book offers practical advice on how individuals with AS can manage their anxiety more effectively. As a person with AS who has struggled with feelings of anxiety and learnt how to overcome them, Nick Dubin shares his own tried and tested solutions along with up-to-date research on stress management for individuals with AS, including a chapter on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Dubin explores the key problem areas that can lead to anxiety for people with AS such as lack of social skills, difficulties establishing romantic relationships and uncertainty about employment.Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety provides real solutions to a common problem and is essential reading for anyone with AS who has trouble managing stress. The book will also be of interest to family members, teachers and other professionals working with individuals with AS.Trade ReviewThe honest open approach to the difficultiesof Asperger syndrome is refreshing and there is a lot of good advice in this book that covers topics such as anxiety and relationships, employment, shame. Therapies that are available are covered in detail such as CBT and psychotherapy. -- Alex Lowery Speaks About Autism blogDubin's (Asperger Syndrome and Bullying) valuable guide acknowledges the anxiety inherent in Asperger syndrome. The suggested therapies and tone of self-acceptance make it valuable for people with AS, as well as their loved ones and mental health professionals... Dubin discusses how anxiety affects relationships and employment and suggests such adaptive techniques as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and psychotherapy. -- Library JournalIn this short but informative guide for adults with Asperger syndrome (AS), Nick Dubin draws from sources as varied as cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, Judaism, Jungian psychology, and perhaps most intriguingly, his own experiences a a person with AS. Using these sources combined with his unique perspective, he teaches adults with AS specific strategies for dealing with their daily anxiety... Dubin writes in an easy-to-read conversational style, unafraid of using personal examples to illustrate his points. One could imagine that a book so based on personal experience would apply only to a small subset of individuals who have had the exact same set of experiences or a personality similar to the author. However, Dubin is careful to relate his thoughts and experiences to general concepts, and it is likely that his psychological training has given him a a broader perspective. With this combination of experience and training, he succeeds at providing the reader with supportive understanding without coddling... Dubin's book is not idealistic - he is careful to frequently discuss limits and issues widely shared by people with AS and the effects that these can have on the prevalence of anxiety in daily life. Ultimately, his message is one of encouragement and empowerment. -- Journal of Autism Developmental DisorderI think this is a very good book - I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I think it will still be seen as one of the best books on AS an anxiety in ten years time, despite the rapid progress in the field. -- Aspergers UnitedNick Dubin is still in his early 30s. But by the time he reaches 50, he may very well have written a book on every psychological byproduct of life lived in the behavioral minority. 'Asperger's and Anxiety' is another great contribution towards our understanding all that the autism spectrum presents us. -- Michael John Carley, Executive Director of The Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership (GRASP) and author of Asperger's From the Inside OutNick Dubin is an excellent writer who wears his learning lightly. I highly recommend this book for all those touched by Asperger syndrome. -- Jenny Ravenhill, National Austistic SocietyNick Dubin's latest book is a remarkable and keenly insightful work from a brilliant and emerging leader in the autism self-advocacy community. Dubin's astute, insider's comprehension of Asperger's, coupled with his deft ability to convey such in prose, hits every note with spot-on clarity. His perspectives on spirituality are especially valuable. -- William Stillman, author of Autism and the God Connection and Demystifying the Autistic ExperienceNick Dubin has walked the walk growing to adulthood with Asperger's Syndrome. Now as a professional, he talks the talk in this landmark contribution. This is the first book to focus exclusively on Asperger's and anxiety. With keen intelligence, clarity, and insight, Nick applies evidence- based treatments and self-help strategies for individuals living with Asperger's. -- Robert A. Naseef, Ph.D., author of Special Children, Challenged Parents and co-editor of Voices from the SpectrumA remarkable and keenly insightful work from a brilliant and emerging leader in the autism self-advocacy community. -- William Stillman, author of Autism and the God Connection and Demystifying the Autistic ExperienceAs with the last book, this invaluable resource is chock full of practical solutions for identifying, reckoning with, and resolving the many sources of anxiety plaguing people with Asperger Syndrome. A must read for anyone with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism or persons supporting those on the autism spectrum. -- Stephen M. Crown House Publishing The Origins Of Neuro Linguistic Programming
Book SynopsisEdited by John Grinder and Frank Pucelik, the book's contributors include: Robert Dilts, Stephen Gilligan, Judith Delozier, Byron Lewis, Terry McClendon (author of the first history of NLP, The Wild Days). The Origins of Neuro Linguistic Programming brings together the recollections and thoughts of some of the main protagonists from the very early days of NLP. In 1971 Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik were students at Kresege College at the University of California Santa Cruz. They had a strong mutual interest in Gestalt Therapy, Frank because of his traumatic time in Vietnam and because he had been working with some disaffected and drug-addicted kids, and Richard because he had been working with Science and Behavior Books on transcribing and editing Fritz Perls' seminal work, The Gestalt Approach and Eyewitness to Therapy. They started a local gestalt group and ran 2-3 sessions a week collaborating and experimenting with the language of therapy. They started achieving some brilliant results but were having problems transferring their skills to others and so Richard invited one of their college professors, John Grinder, to observe what they were doing in order that he would, hopefully, be able to de-construct what they were doing that was so effective. John was a professor of Linguistics and was instantly impressed with the work that they were doing. He was able to add more structure and in due course the three of them formalised what is now known as the Meta Model. NLP was born. John and Frank and each of the other contributors give their own personal account of this period of collaboration when something magical was happening in northern California. Of particular interest is the role Gregory Bateson played, particularly in bringing John and Richard together with Milton H Erickson. An extremely insightful and riveting read for anyone interested in NLP.

John Murray Press Powers of Two: Finding the Essence of Innovation
Book SynopsisAll of us have experienced creative connection, and glimpsed its power. Yet, for centuries, the myth of the lone genius has obscured the critical story of the power of collaboration. In Powers of Two, Joshua Wolf Shenk argues that creative pairs are the exemplars for innovation. Drawing on years of research on great partnerships in history - from Lennon and McCartney to Marie and Pierre Curie, plus hundreds more in fields including literature, popular culture, art and business - Shenk identifies the common journey pairs take from the spark of initial connection, through the passage to a cognitive 'joint identity' to competition and the struggle for power. Using scientific and psychological insights, he uncovers new truths about epic duos - and sheds new light on the genesis of some of the greatest creative work in history. He reveals hidden partnerships among people known only for their individual work (like C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien), and even 'adversarial collaborations' among those who are out to beat each other. This revelatory and lyrical book will make us see creative exchange as the central terrain of our psyches.Trade ReviewFascinating . . . highly readable. We may like to think that we live in a world of creative individualism, but this insightful books should convince even the sceptical that when it comes to creating something new and exciting, it really does take two * Sunday Business Post *An interesting thesis * The Economist *If - as Harry Nilsson sang - one is the loneliest number, then two might very well be the awesomest. This book proves that if you're interested in doing anything creative - whether that's writing a book, making a film or even starting your own business - you're better off doing it in a pair. So if you and your mate are a fledgling Lennon and McCartney, Shenk says two is better than one * FHM *Fascinating * Irish Daily Mail *We sometimes think of creativity as coming from brilliant loners. In fact, it more often happens when bright people pair up and complement each other. Shenk's fascinating book shows how to spark the power of this phenomenon * Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs *In this surprising, compelling, deeply felt book, Joshua Wolf Shenk banishes the idea of solitary genius by demonstrating that our richest art and science come from collaboration: we need one another not only for love, but also for thinking and imagining and growing and being * Andrew Solomon *Descriptions of creative life too often focus on individual genius or the wisdom of crowds. The great wit of this book is to reveal a seam hidden between those poles. All future accounts of artistry and innovation will be enriched by the treasures Joshua Wolf Shenk has uncovered in the creativity of pairs * Lewis Hyde *Fascinating . . . [a] provocative thesis on the genesis of creative innovation * Kirkus Reviews *This is a book about magic; about the Beatles; about the chemistry between people; about neuroscience; and about the buddy system; it examines love and hate, harmony and dissonance, and everything in between. The result is wise, funny, surprising, and completely engrossing * Susan Orlean *Powers of Two is filled with keen insights into the human condition and terrific examples of creativity at work. This is an inspiring book that also happens to be a great read * Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive *

Jessica Kingsley Publishers The BASIC Ph Model of Coping and Resiliency:
Book SynopsisThe “BASIC Ph” model of coping and resiliency, developed by Prof. Mooli Lahad and Dr. Ofra Ayalon, was the first to describe coping as an on-going effort to manage life challenges. This is the first book to be published on this world-renowned approach, widely used as an effective resiliency assessment, intervention, and recovery model.Underpinning the model is the suggestion that every person has internal powers, or coping resources, which can be mobilized in stressful situations; the effort to survive coming from a healthy rather than a pathological instinct. The categorization of these coping resources gives the model its name: Belief, Affect, Social, Imagination, Cognition, Physical. This edited volume outlines the theory behind the “BASIC Ph” approach, presents practice-based and research-based interventions and explains their application during and in the wake of both natural and man-made disasters. With wide-ranging chapters from authoritative contributors, the book shows how the “BASIC Ph” model can be successfully applied in family, community, education, health, and business settings. This will be an invaluable text for professionals, academics, and students with an interest in trauma and coping with crisis and disaster.Trade ReviewThis volume's importance is that it opens theory to practice for the study, understanding, and promotion of resilience. We still know little about protecting and developing resilience and it is essential that we be open to an array of models that we develop, test, and refine. This volume offers both clinicians and researchers critical approaches for supporting and fostering people's strengths who are confronted with great adversity. We are at the beginning of this journey that will ultimately be one of mental health's fundamental contributions to humankind. -- Stevan E. Hobfoll, PhD, The Judd and Marjorie Weinberg Presidential Professor and Chair, Behavioral Sciences, RUSH University Medical Center, Chicago, IllinoisThis is an excellent book and essential reading for clinicians and practitioners of all kinds, including play and creative arts therapists. It brings together theory, application and research in a comprehensive manual. The language is accessible but rigorous, and examples of practice bring the text to life and help the reader to live the resilience factor. This book will be in demand for evaluation of 'evidence based-practice' with suffering populations, whether children or adults. It certainly provides an illuminating experience for the reader. -- Professor Sue Jennings, PhD, Visiting Fellow Leeds Metropolitan University, Churchill Fellow 2012-2013 'Arts and Older People'The book descries the usefulness of psychotherapy. it explains that although this form of therapy uses different tools that explore a person's processes an insight, both the preventative model and psychotherapy have equal merit and can achieve similar outcomes... This book helps the reader to understand that people have different belief systems that inform their thinking and behaviours and goes on to compare different coping strategies adopted by diverse peoples and populations... The book uses research, tables, diagrams, photographs and frameworks to enable the reader to visualise the situations of a number of crisis lade communities all over the wold. Case studies bring vividly to life the stories of the most difficult environments and how they cope. The book explains how by applying the BACIS Ph model communities can be helped to build their resiliency and cope ore healthily. -- Hilary Schultess-Young, Independent Social Worker * Professional Social Work *Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Integrative Model of Resiliency. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Equality Act 2010 in Mental Health: A Guide
Book SynopsisThe Equality Act 2010 in Mental Health provides a critical guide to the Act: what it means for mental health services and how it should be implemented. It addresses each of the nine characteristics protected by the Act in turn, examining the research and practice issue associated with each and offering positive guidance. Contributors also highlight the broader issues associated with achieving equality in mental health, including conflicts between different forms of discrimination, the impact of budget cuts and the issue of inequality in wider society and how it relates to the mental health services. Finally, the book tackles organisational change and the implications for management practice, organisational structures and staff training. This book will be a valuable resource for those involved in providing mental health services, including managers and frontline workers across health and social care.Trade ReviewIt consolidates and extends a range of previous legislation in respect of race relations, gender discrimination and disability discrimination by outlining nine 'protected characteristics'. A number of guides have been written to help practitioners implement the Act but this appears to be the first with a specific focus on its possible implications for all those working within mental health services. This book aims to be an accessible guide to legal and technical information on the Act and attempts to provide practical ways of putting equality into mental health practice. -- The Psychiatric BulletinThis is an accessible, easy to understand and stimulating book on what can often be seen as either a theoretical topic or about addressing political correctness. -- British Journal of Occupational TherapyThis book is both rich and fascinating. It combines deep theoretical insight with acute pragmatism and never fails to engage the reader. The book will provide an indispensable guide to anyone who wishes to understand the context in which equality legislation must be implemented, or, frankly, why that legislation became necessary in the first place. -- David Hewitt, Solicitor and partner at Weightmans LLP, UK and author of The Nearest Relative Handbook 2nd editionTable of ContentsForeword. Jessica Kingsley Publishers From Anxiety to Meltdown: How Individuals on the
Book SynopsisAnxiety is the root cause of many of the difficulties experienced by people on the autism spectrum, and is often caused by things such as a change in routine, or sensory overload. Deborah Lipsky takes a practical look at what happens when things spiral out of control, exploring what leads to meltdowns and tantrums, and what can be done to help. Drawing on her own extensive personal experience and using real-life examples to explain how autistic people think, the author distinguishes between meltdowns and tantrums, showing how they are different, how each can begin, and most importantly, how to identify triggers and prevent outbursts from happening in the first place. Practical and simple solutions to avoiding anxiety are offered throughout, and these are accompanied by calming techniques and suggestions for dealing with tantrums when they occur. This book will be an essential read for those on the autism spectrum, their families and friends, professionals working with them, and anybody else with an interest in autism spectrum conditions.Trade ReviewA highly engaging texts, with illustrations drawn from personal experience, From Anxiety to Meltdown provides valuable insights into daily challenges faced by individuals with autism spectrum and highlights how aspects of the environment both with regard to sensory issues and cognitive demands can increase anxiety and lead to meltdown... I would recommend this text to parents, teachers, and professionals who care for and support childrn and young people with autism. -- DebateThis excellent book explains how anxiety causes meltdowns in autism... The book is well written and informative; much of the information is a reminder of how reactions to the environment can be so differnt etween individuals with autism and neurotypicals. -- AukidsThis book acts as a guide for people who want to gain a better understanding about how individuals on the autistic spectrum deal with anxiety, meltdowns and manifest tantrums... The author offers some good ideas and guides on how to avoid and reduce anxiety in certain situations... Deborah Lipsky certainly guides the reader through how anxiety can affect people with autism and how to deal with this in a very personal, approachable manner. -- Youth in MindPeople with autism are very good at worrying, and we now have neurological studies suggesting that high levels of anxiety are indeed a constitutional aspect of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Deborah Lipsky's book provides a wealth of insight, explanations and practical strategies based on her personal experiences. As a clinician, I endorse her analysis of the causes of anxiety and meltdowns, and know she will receive the gratitude of parents, teachers, psychologists and people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder for her recommendations and interventions. This book could be more effective than medication, and is less expensive than a consultation with a clinical psychologist. -- Tony Attwood, Clinical Psychologist and author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's SyndromeI very much relate to and appreciate Deborah Lipsky's book so much I think the title should read 'From Anxiety to Meltdown to Living Lovely'. From now on when people ask me to explain why I have meltdowns and how they can help me recover I think I will just hand them a copy of this book. -- Liane Holliday Willey, EdD author of Safety Skills for Asperger Women: How to Save a Perfectly Good Female LifeDeborah Lipsky provides her inside view on anxiety and meltdowns in autism. She explains how she controls her anxiety. -- Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures and The Way I See ItWritten by a person with high functioning autism this book provides first hand experiences of what it is like to be autistic. That alone would make this book a must read but this book is so much more... The book is easy reading and the author provides interesting anecdotes to explain points which keeps the readers interest... on finishing it the reader really feels like they have a clear understanding of the triggers of meltdowns and strategies to support the individual. I feel that this is a useful book for anyone working or caring for children or young people with autism. -- NAPLIC MattersDeborah Lipsky's analogy of a person with autism being rather like a tiger was thought provoking and quite understandable. The book is easy to read and uses easy to understand language making it accessible to the majority. It gives an excellent insight into the mind of someone with autism and how the condition can affect them. The information about how to calm a person with autism was particularly interesting from a non autistic point of view and how the use of scripts can help lower the anxieties of people with Autism. The use of the examples in the book also give a better understanding of how situations are interpreted differently between autistic and non autistic people.A good book for anyone working with people on the Autistic Spectrum. -- OAASISDeborah Lipsky, the self dubbed Raccoon Lady, has written a must read for people like me... So here, Deborah provides great insight into the thought processes and thinking patterns applicable to many people on the spectrum,. Her perspective may not be unique, in that there are lots of other autistic people with similar viewpoints, but trouble is that not enough of them have written a book about it to enlighten us. So here is the opportunity... Her insights, tips and approach should prove invaluable to many, but for me, I was particularly interested to read about the interplay between anxiety, OCD, stress and how these elements can affect someone in their adult life. Her account provides ample evidence about mechanisms as possible, as well as the need to teach and practice flexible thinking. I was delighted to read about Deborah's challenging and fulfilling life, which I'm sure will prove inspirational to both parents and autistic children. It would be far too sweeping to say, "Nothing holds you back except the limits imposed by yourself", but the impulse to self-censure is a commonplace part of the human condition. -- Whitterer on AutismI actually enjoyed reading this book and found it very readable. I particularly appreciated the personal anecdotes and her forthright opinions....She is very careful to clearly explain and then illustrate everything with examples and thereby ensures that the reader fully understands what causes meltdowns and how they feel....She gives many suggestions about how to spot when a meltdown is imminent and to prevent it before its too late. There is also a mine of information about how to adapt a person's life so that they are not overwhelmed, without having to totally withdraw from life and how to prepare for unwanted but inevitable changes to plans....I totally agree with her focus and feel that she has struck the perfect balance between helping the child/adult learn strategies to manage and control their anxiety and also those around them putting in an equal amount of effort to accommodate the person on the spectrum....On a personal level I could relate to much of what she says and I suspect that many parents with children on the spectrum will find it not only instructive in helping their child, but also for themselves....If you are struggling with a child who is constantly being aggressive and having meltdowns this book goes a long way to explaining why and what you can do about it....For parents who are beginning to feel that their child is just bad, or where schools feel that the child is just badly disciplined then this book will help to change their false cognitions....This is a must read for parents, learning support assistants, social workers, teachers and psychologists and will give them much needed insight and empathy." -- AS TeensDrawing on her extensive personal experience as a high-functioning autistic individual and using real-life examples to explain how autistic people think, the author highlight how meltdowns and tantrums differ from each other and discusses the sources they can stem from... Practical and simple solutions for avoiding anxiety are offered throughout, accompanied by calming techniques and suggestions for ways to deal with tantrums, when they occur. -- Human GivensTable of ContentsIntroduction. 1. Garnet Publishing English for Psychology Course Book + CDs
Book SynopsisSince Napoleon''s invasion of Egypt in 1798, the western traveller has been obsessed with the Pharaohs and Egypt''s ancient past. Her Islamic culture has been largely ignored, and the pyramids have been allowed to cast a long shadow over the visual culture of Islamic Cairo, obscuring a magnificent art and architectural heritage that has lasted over a thousand years, from the building of the Mosque of Amr in the seventh century to that of Muhammad Ali in the nineteenth. Cairo is full of masterpieces of medieval art and architecture reflecting the status of Egypt as the centre of several significant Muslim empires. The purpose of this book is to redress the cultural balance and examine the art and architectural treasures of Cairo from the Arab to the Ottoman conquests (642-1517). Set within an historical narrative, the stylistic development of the visual arts is explained within changing religious, social and political contexts. Examples of the decorative arts - ceramics, glass, woodwork, metalwork, textiles and manuscripts - are examined in the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo, and other major collections in Europe and the USA.Architecture and the decorative arts are dealt with separately with detailed descriptions, illustrating how the story of Islamic art and architecture is one of continuing adaptation and change. By concentrating on Cairo''s Islamic art and architecture, Yeomans has created a study of Islamic style which is unprecedented in its historical scope. Fully illustrated with over 200 vivid photographs, plans and elevations and a comprehensive glossary of architectural terms, this book will be essential reading for architects, designers and historians; indeed, for anyone with an appreciation of one of the world''s finest and richest architectural legacies, tragically under threat.

Little, Brown Book Group Breaking Down The Wall Of Silence: To Join the
Book SynopsisAlice Miller has achieved recognition for her revolutionary work on the causes and effects of child abuse - here she works towards demolishing the wall of silence which surrounds the sufferings of early childhood as they affect everyday life, politics, the media, psychiatry and psychotherapy. An infant's trust and dependency on its parents, its longing to be loved and be able to love in return, are boundless. To exploit this dependency, to confuse a child's longings and abuse its trust by pretending that this is somehow good for it, Alice Miller condemns as a criminal act, committed time and again out of ignorance and the refusal to change. The essential first stage in this healing process is feeling the truth of our experience. Only this, Alice Miller writes, can enable us to recognise childhood events and resolve their consequences so that we can lead a conscious, responsible life. If we know and feel what happened to us then, we will never wish to harm ourselves or others now.Trade ReviewEvery parent should read her * EDNA O'BRIEN *Alice Miller changed the way I think about my own life * SARA PARETSKY *

PCCS Books The Person-Centred Approach: A Passionate
Book SynopsisPeggy Natiello's collection of work, spanning over 25 years, has become a favourite amongst students on Person-Centred courses throughout the UK. In the foreword, Jules Seeman observes the work to be 'immensely personal ...taking us to the heart of each issue that she touches.' It is also a scholarly, much referenced work on collaborative power and gender issues.Trade ReviewReading this book was the journey I needed. Peggy Natiello informs, illuminates and inspires with this thoughtful and clear account of what 'a way of being' really means. In an age when therapists frequently feel the pressure to add yet another technique to their tool bag, this book is fresh air and reminds us that it is the relationship and quality of being which heals and that this is unique to each encounter. For anyone seeking to understand the person-centred approach, this book will give a real insight into the rigour, discipline, courage and depth required. For those already committed, this timely book with its many examples deepens our understanding of the radical, political, yet deeply personal nature of this way of being. Not since reading my first Carl Rogers book, have I been so moved, empowered and affirmed. Jenny Biancardi, Person-Centred practitioner. Peggy Natiello's original voice strikes the same chords of excitement, empowerment and integrity stirred in me when sitting with her and Carl Rogers in their training program some twenty years ago. PCCS Books Agnes's Jacket: A Psychologist's Search for the
Book SynopsisIn a Victorian-era German asylum, seamstress Agnes Richter painstakingly stitched a mysterious autobiographical text into every inch of the jacket she created from her institutional uniform. Despite every attempt to silence them, hundreds of other patients have managed to get their stories out, at least in disguised form, and so it continues today. A vast gulf exists between the way medicine explains psychiatric illness and the experiences of those who suffer. Hornstein's brilliant work helps us to bridge that gulf, guiding us through the inner lives of those diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar illness, depression, and paranoia and emerging with nothing less than a new model for understanding so-called 'mental illness', one another and ourselves. One which asks not 'what's wrong with you' but 'what happened to you and how did you manage to survive?'Trade Review"Reading Agnes's Jacket changed the course of my life. In this book Gail Hornstein undertakes a remarkable investigation into the experiences of people who - like me - have found themselves caught up in the 'mad world' of mental illness. In this compelling account of a personal quest spanning centuries and continents, seeking to better comprehend what it is to go mad, Gail Hornstein connects us to a whole new world of hitherto hidden networks, radical voices and marvellous stories of survival, recovery and beyond. Mental illness can be a profoundly isolating experience. Since discovering Agnes's Jacket I know that I am part of a growing global community of people - either 'experts by experience or experts by profession' - who push forward towards a more humane and hopeful understanding of the meanings of madness." Bobby Baker, author of 'Diary Drawings', Mind Book of the Year 2011 "An amazing psychological adventure story. Hornstein, an academic psychologist with the skills of a first-rate journalist, enters the world of the truly 'mad' and comes out with profound lessons about her profession and herself." Barbara Ehrenreich "It would be difficult to over-praise this book. Beautifully written, combining intellectual rigour with the tension of a detective story, it uses historical and modern material to document the struggles and opposition faced by those called mad who simply wish to tell their own stories. A superb addition to the increasing number of critiques of the medicalisation of distress." Mary Boyle "Compelling and beautifully done." Here, he deconstructs the foundational concepts of psychology and, drawing on his 25 years as a person-centred practitioner in a range of settings, helps us to look at them with fresh eyes. His book offers both young and more seasoned psychologists a refreshing alternative to conventional clinical texts with its message to look beyond theory and control and respect the complexity of the people we meet in our work.Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Part 1 - Science is dead, 1 - Life-giver, 2 - Misalignment, 3 - Paradigms lost; Part 2 - Beyond theory and control, 4 - The cult of personality theory, 5 - Diagnosis disorder, 6 - Personality as numbers, 7 - The delusion of a shared language; Part 3 - The impersonal is political, 8 - Welcome to the machine, 9 - It's about the power, 10 - Fear itself; Conclusion - egoless practice.

Aeon Books Ltd Human Health and its Maintenance with the Aid of
Book SynopsisA groundbreaking formula of interlocking ideas which integrate circadian physiology with the transformations that constitute human life. Based on forty years of clinical practice, Julian Barker takes knowledge, information, and data from various disciplines, presenting an integrative model of health, linking circadian biology with the psychosocial human being. He develops a theory that attempts to explain how medicinal plants modify human physiology and how they contribute to health. Aimed at the student acquiring knowledge and developing the skills to practise medicine as well as the qualified herbal practitioner, this thought-provoking work breaks new ground in health theory.Trade Review'This book is a gem. Julian Barker is a graduate of the first (1978) cohort of the UK School of Phytotherapy who has been in full time clinical practice for over forty years; an accomplished independent scholar, he has also taught philosophy in graduate level herbal medicine. Kudos to Aeon Books for giving our collective privileged access to this summation of an individual lifetime’s work... Barker’s book supplies a provisional cartography of the world of western herbal medicine - a work-in-progress navigational aid for the individual practitioner and potential resource for the collective that can help advance our way of knowing our medicine for the coming period. It also assumes that the psycho-spiritual dimension of practice is at root about the self-transformation of the practitioner, which is another key to collective progress. For herbal students seriously intending to practice the medicine, this book is an incomparable resource – a gift that will keep on giving. For long time practitioners it could become an ever-ready companion to the contemplation of their own process.' Springer Nature Switzerland AG Homeopathy Reconsidered: What Really Helps
Book SynopsisHomeopathy is over 200 years old and is still experiencing an uninterrupted influx of new practitioners and patients. Many patients and therapists swear by this "alternative healing method", which in some countries is even financed by health insurances. This seems completely incomprehensible to critics: For them it is clearly evident that homeopathy is hopelessly unscientific and has at best a placebo effect. The positions of supporters and opponents seem to be just as immutable as they are incompatible. This book answers some essential and fascinating questions: What remains of the founding ideas of homeopathy in 21st century medicine? Does it really work and, if so, how? Which of the original theories can we still apply today with a clear conscience and use for the benefit of patients and the healthcare system? Where does homeopathy have its limits and does it indeed need to be critically reconsidered and evaluated? The author has dealt with the points of criticism for years, but at the same time also takes seriously the wishes and concerns of patients who often feel insufficiently cared for by conventional medical practice. Against the background of her own personal history, her book attempts to bridge the gap between these two traditionally opposing camps.Trade Review“This is a very interesting book that would be appropriate for any healthcare provider who wants a better understanding of homeopathy. It does a very good job of explaining why homeopathic medications cannot be considered viable medical treatments on a physiological level, but how the ‘talk therapy’ aspects of homeopathy and the ability of homeopaths to see the whole picture of their patients' illnesses are aspects of care that are often missing in modern medicine.” (Elizabeth M Streit, Doody's Book Reviews, May 10, 2019)Table of ContentsPreface to the English Edition.- How and on what basis does homeopathy treat?.- Homeopathy- What are we talking about?.- Is homeopathy part of today's medicine?.- Why do patients turn to homeopathy?.- What remains of homeopathy in the 21st century?.- Here and Now.

Springer International Publishing AG The Psychiatric Interview for Differential
Book SynopsisThis book offers an alternative to operational diagnostic manuals and manuals for structured interviewing as the only sources of theoretical and clinical knowledge. It provides an exposition of psychiatric interviewing that is theoretically and clinically well founded and supplies the reader with a coherent framework for performance of a thorough psychiatric examination. The goal is not to come up with yet another interview scheme but to facilitate an understanding of the basic (but, today, completely neglected) tenets of psychopathology and phenomenology. This exposition targets the disorders of subjectivity (consciousness), the second-person processes involved in converting subjective, first-person and observable data into a third person, diagnostically useful, format. In addition, the most pertinent clinical descriptions concerning the major diagnostic groups are presented and discussed.Trade Review“This book focuses on the broadening decline of psychiatric clinical knowledge and the framework for diagnostic interviews. … The purpose is to fill a gap in the psychiatric literature on the clinical interview. … The book primarily targets clinical psychiatrists and psychologists, in addition to researchers, to help them refine their diagnostic skills and psychopathological definitions. It also will be helpful to students and psychiatric residents who wish to better understand symptom presentation and differential diagnosis.” (Michael Easton, Doody's Book Reviews, December, 2016)Table of ContentsPhenomenology of psychiatric interviewing.- The nature of the psychiatric object: Symptoms and signs.- Prototype and Gestalt.- Consciousness.- Experience, Expression, and Language.- Conducting the psychiatric interview.- The goal of interviewing.- Conversational approach.- Semistructured approach.- Mental State Examination.- The difficult interview.- Psychopathology: Navigating between the spectra: organic, schizophrenia, affective, personality, situational problems.- Considering organic pathology.- Indicators of psychosis.- Varieties of depression-like mental states.- Varieties of anxiety.- Acute psychosis and bipolar disorder.- Detecting disordered personality pattern.- Thinking adult in adolescent psychiatry.
