Psychology: states of consciousness Books
Baywood Publishing Company Inc Envisioning the Dream Through Art and Science
Book SynopsisThis monograph is the product of an interdisciplinary experiment--an artistic experiment and a psychological experiment--focused on dreams. Inspired by the prevalence of dream imagery and dream logic in surrealist art, the authors asked 100 art students to create digital images representing critical scenes from one of their dreams, then to create a surrealist collage from the digital images. The resulting collages tend to capture the surreality envisioned in actual works of surrealist art, as two collages included in the book illustrate. Inspired also by the psychological problem of studying other minds, the authors asked the 100 art students to describe their dream in writing, to interpret their dream, and to complete two personality measures: the Short Form of the Boundary Questionnaire and the Brief Symptom Inventory. The art students'' scores on particular personality scales were found to be statistically associated with particular dream aspects, many of which are visually observabTable of ContentsAn Interdisciplinary Experiment on Dream Imagery Experimental Methods Artistic Experiment: Surrealism and the Boundaries between Subconscious Dreaming and Reality Penetration of the Boundaries between Dream and Reality Quest for Archetypal Manifestations of Subconscious Impulses Use of Collage to Make Incongruities Compatible Conclusions from the Artistic Experiment Psychological Experiment: The Problem of Other Minds and the Visual Content of Dreams Connections between Emotions Underlying a Dream and Visual Aspects of the Dream Connections between Symptoms of Psychopathology and Visual Aspects of the Dream Conclusions from the Psychological Experiment Appendix with 100 Artists’ Verbal Descriptions, Interpretations, and Digital Images of Their Own Dreams References Index to Dreams

Book SynopsisJulian Jaynes'' 1976 book, The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, continues to arouse an unsettling ambivalence. Richard Dawkins called it "either complete rubbish or a work of consummate genius, nothing in between". The present book suggests that the bicameral mind is a phantasm; the dating of the origin of consciousness contradicts archeological and literary evidence; and the theory contributes nothing toward explaining why some physical states are conscious while others are not because the nonconscious bicameral brain is neurophysiologically equivalent to the conscious brain. However, the author pays tribute to Jaynes''s work as a work of "consummate genius" because it compels us to re-evaluate the significance of humankind''s earliest traditions and texts that might shine light on the "very suspicious totem of evolutionary mythology" that consciousness has evolved continuously and gradually from worms to man.The present book suggests that the evolution of the relationship between consciousnesses, mass, energy, and spacetime radically changed nearly 6,000 years ago during the epigenetic, evolutionary degeneration of a little-known, threadlike structure originating from the center of the central nervous system called Reissner''s fiber. The earliest Egyptian, Hebrew, Indian and Chinese traditions, buried beneath the dust of fallen Babel and thousands of years of distortions and disguisings, describe this process during the origin of religion and mystical traditions.

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Sleep Difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorders:
Book SynopsisProblems with sleeping are common and make life difficult for the individual who is affected and for those around them. Sleep difficulties are particularly prevalent amongst people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and often cause or worsen other difficulties. This comprehensive guide to the management of sleep problems, introduces all the proven remedies and focuses on the problems commonly found in ASDs and related conditions. The author discusses sleep in depth, including how we currently define and understand it. The full spectrum of sleep disorders is explained alongside the range of possible treatment approaches. The book also examines why some sleep problems are more common among people with an ASD than others, how sleep problems evolve over time, what can be done to treat them and the likely benefits from different treatments. This book is a complete resource for professionals, families and carers working with those suffering from sleep problems of any kind. It will be of great interest to anyone wanting to gain a thorough understanding of sleep in relation to ASDs.Trade ReviewThis book offers a well-researched and comprehensive explanation of sleep patterns and problems and the theories and practices that are commonly used to help addrtess sleep problems. -- CommunicationFor professionals, academics or for those seeking a comprehensive account of sleep difficulties this book would provide a valuable read. -- NAPLIC MattersThis is the first book that I know of dedicated to addressing sleep difficulties in ASC... This book is a comprehensive and welcome resource for professionals in understanding sleep issues in children with autism. -- AUKIDSThis is an extremely well researched book, clearly demonstrating that Aitken is of the old school psychologists who, are sadly, in my opinion, a dying breed... This is an excellent book which I highly recommend to clinicians working with children with sleep problems but is also suited to parents wishing to become more informed about the science behind sleep and some actions which might help their child. -- asteens and BFKbooksKen Aitken has done a remarkable job in providing a scholarly and comprehensive overview of this important but neglected topic. He offers valuable insights into the potential nature of the sleep problems associated with autism, an encyclopaedic listing of potential interventions and some useful tools to help with assessment. His careful detailing of the evidence base makes this a vital resource for any modern practitioner. -- John Clements, Clinical PsychologistThe new standard reference for all clinicians who are confronted with sleep disorders in children with autism, and for parents who need answers to the "what can I do" question. -- Filippo Muratori, Division of Child Neurology and Psychiatry, University of PisaThe spectrum of difficulties are explained in detail as well as a broad selection of possible solutions. Desperate parents are likely to claim, like me, that we've tried all that before, but it is useful to remember that what didn't work when they were 3 or 5 or 10, might be worth another try now that they are teenagers... I agree wholeheartedly with the first step of making a 'sleep diary', only then will you be able to get a bird's eye view of the true situation... John Catt Educational Ltd Body Clocks: The biology of time
Book SynopsisOur body’s clocks make the difference between happiness and depression, health and illness, and even life and death. The brilliant scientist Paul Kelley makes a compelling case for all organisations to allow people to work and study the hours that suit their personal circadian rhythms. That way, Paul argues, we would all be more productive, a great deal of ill health would be avoided and the world would be a better and happier place.Trade ReviewMarrying insight with practical advice, Kelley translates the hard science into an engaging story of how and why organisations should be better attuned to the unique rhythms of our bodies. --Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor University Of Buckingham, former Master of Wellington College Educational pioneer Paul Kelley masterfully assembles scientific evidence from a wide range of disciplines and locales worldwide to show that the internal timekeepers (circadian rhythms) within our bodies are vital predictors of health, well-being, and a wide range of human performance outcomes. Body Clocks should be read by CEOs, policy makers, educators, parents, and learners worldwide to understand, embrace, and actualize these insights in education, healthcare, work, and play. This is a clarion call for reconfiguring systems around the globe to better serve the needs of all current sleep-deprived citizens wherever they may be found. --Dennis Cheek, National Creativity Network (USA), IESEG School of Management (France), and Institute for Simulation and Training, University of Central Florida A book of global significance. Kelley and Griffiths' work not only highlights the importance of grounding education in the biology of learning, it challenges policy makers to reflect on why they are so slow to adopt educational neuroscience as the foundation for decision-making and invest more in both the creation of that evidence and its translation. A triumph in terms of the explanation of the evidence and its implications. There are no global challenges more important than grounding education theory in biological process. Having an effective education system rests at the heart of both health and economic policy solutions. That the scientific understanding of sleep and its implications for learning, working and health are so profound should not come as a surprise. We are, after all, a mind, brain and body - whether we are at school or the workplace. What is always a surprise, and now the key challenge, is getting the world and systems to recognise this and invest in it. This book will help to change that. --Dr Richard Churches, co-author of Neuroscience for Teachers and Lead Adviser for Education Reform and Evidence-Based Practice at Education Development Trust This is not only a fascinating book, it is also a really important book. Grounded in evidence, what science has demonstrated this book explains in an authoritative and engaging manner and gives us a whole series of insights into the impact of sleep on our daily, personal and professional lives. As an educator and a manager the implications of this book are significant and provide the knowledge base on which practical and impactful interventions can be made to how people learn and work and how organisations can become more positive and effective. There are also lessons for the individual in this book that will stem from a better understanding of the importance of sleep on how we live and work. Fascinating, important. And useful. -- Professor Andy Adcroft, Deputy Dean, Surrey Business School, National Teaching Fellow

Allen & Unwin Sleep Easy
Book SynopsisBad sleep sucks. Sleep deficiency defies our biology and sabotages our days. Yet more than a third of us struggle to get to sleep or stay asleep at night. We can shake off the odd sleepless night, but when sleep difficulties persist, things start to unravel. Sleep debt takes its toll on our mood, energy, and productivity. It affects our behaviour around food and exercise as well as eroding our immunity, even our mental and physical health. As our best efforts to help ourselves fail, or perpetuate the problem, we can feel disillusioned, disempowered and frustratingly stuck. You're not alone, and there is a way through. This six-week, step-by-step guide will help you sleep easy.Bernice Tuffery, fed up after years of compromised sleep, made it her mission to learn how to sleep well again. She'd tried early nights, warm baths, a bit of yoga and meditation, but nothing worked. Even natural supplements, over-the-counter sleep aids, melatonin, and at times sleeping pills, failed to deliver a sustainable solution. As a qualitative market researcher, she was determined to know how to sleep naturally again. She discovered a proven, natural, and very learnable way to improve chronic sleep difficulties. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is recognised internationally by sleep experts as the gold-standard treatment for insomnia. But with a lack of awareness, a severe shortage of experts offering it and virtually no public funding for treatment in New Zealand and Australia, it's hard and expensive to access. From her discussions with sleep professionals, extensive research and her lived-experience of restoring her own sleep, Bernice shares her knowledge with humour and heart. Confident that CBTi can be self-taught, she offers this practical and inspiring insiders' guide to getting a good night's sleep.
