Book SynopsisBased on a comprehensive reading of eighteenth-century Chinese novels and a theoretical approach grounded in poststructuralist, psychoanalytic, and feminist criticism, this title examines how such privilege functions in these novels and provides the first full account of literary representations of sexuality and gender in pre-modern China.Trade Review"This book provides for the first time in English an introduction to the real complexities of the mature Chinese novel tradition. It reflects insightful new conclusions drawn on pathbreaking scholarship. McMahon has gained access to rare novels in Chinese collections that few Chinese scholars have written about; his comments are of signal importance."—Robert E. Hegel, Washington University

Book SynopsisExplores the changing meanings of honour in early-20th-century Brazil, a period that saw an extraordinary proliferation of public debates that linked morality, modernity, honour, and national progress. This title reveals how everyday interpretations of honour influenced official attitudes and even the law itself as Brazil attempted to modernise.Trade Review“The author is to be applauded for asking hard questions about the ways in which sexual activity, or the lack thereof, are used to make statements about race and class.”—Jeffrey Lesser, author of Negotiating National Identity: Immigrants, Minorities, and the Struggle for Ethnicity in Brazil“This is an outstanding work both in terms of its highly original research and its very sophisticated interpretation.”—Barbara Weinstein, author of For Social Peace in Brazil: Industrialists and the Remaking of the Working Class in São Paulo, 1920–1964

  • Queering the Color Line

Duke University Press Queering the Color Line

    2 in stock

Book Synopsis Queering the Color Line transforms previous understandings of how homosexuality was “invented” as a category of identity in the United States beginning in the late nineteenth century. Analyzing a range of sources, including sexology texts, early cinema, and African American literature, Siobhan B. Somerville argues that the emerging understanding of homosexuality depended on the context of the black/white “color line,” the dominant system of racial distinction during this period. This book thus critiques and revises tendencies to treat race and sexuality as unrelated categories of analysis, showing instead that race has historically been central to the cultural production of homosexuality. At about the same time that the 1896 Supreme Court Plessy v. Ferguson decision hardened the racialized boundary between black and white, prominent trials were drawing the public’s attention to emerging categories of sexual identity. Somerville arguesTrade Review“Queering the Color Line is a groundbreaking study that sets a new agenda for critical investigations of the intersecting histories of race and sexuality in the United States. Siobhan Somerville provides a model of interdisciplinary, politically engaged scholarship that is certain to become required reading in queer studies, race theory, and U.S. history as well as American literature.”—Lisa Duggan, New York University“By offering a new understanding of the emergence of race and sexuality as collaborative entities, Somerville has made an important contribution to the expanding scholarship in African American studies, American studies, queer theory, and cultural studies.”—Robyn Wiegman, author of American Anatomies: Theorizing Race and Gender“This book pioneers new strategies for understanding the intersectionality of sexuality and race formation. Equally adept at textual analysis and historical contextualization, Somerville demonstrates how the early sexological division of people into homosexuals and heterosexuals was profoundly shaped by the discourse of scientific racism, and she elaborates her argument through a series of subtle reinterpretations of cinematic and literary texts that illuminate the profound—usually inexplicit—interdependence of racial and sexual discourse. • The Misfit of the Family

MD - Duke University Press The Misfit of the Family

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn more than ninety novels and novellas, Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) created a universe teeming with over two thousand characters. This book reveals how Balzac, in imagining the dense, vividly rendered social world of his novels, used his writing as a powerful means to understand and analyze - as well as represent - a range of forms of sexuality.Trade Review“Michael Lucey’s Balzac is not the Balzac they taught you in college, or even in graduate school. His resourceful readings introduce us to a social universe to which oddballs and misfits are entirely germane because queerness is its norm. Now I understand why Proust so loved Balzac and what Baudelaire learned from him: that the bizarreness of beauty offers a clue to the form of heroism that is truly characteristic of the modern age.”—Ross Chambers, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan"Michael Lucey's fine literary analysis, rigorous theorization of sexualities, attention to culture as a contested field, and nuanced historiographical reconstructions show how Balzac’s Comédie humaine, long viewed as the domain of social climbers thrusting aside residual forms of sociabilities, in fact offers a panorama of ‘misfits’ negotiating the instabilities and faultlines of the family as it is being reinvented in post-Revolutionary France. Lucey's compelling reflection on how literature is emmeshed with the historical construction of private life reveals queer paradigms as central to a genealogy of French modernity."—Margaret Cohen, New York University“The Misfit of the Family is an impressive fruition of theory precisely mobilized to decipher as never before the remarkable flowering of queer sexualities in Balzac’s epochal œuvre. We come to see why sexuality is so often liminal, marking as it does those crucial points where one form of capital wants conversion into another. Readers of this remarkable book will not be able to ignore the astonishing machinery of queer sexuality in the formative decades of our modernity.”—James Creech, Miami UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Preface xiii Introduction: Balzac and Alternative Families 1 1. Book SynopsisAn ethnographic case study of sex tourism in the Dominican Republic, showing how the sex trade is linked to economic and cultural globalizationTrade Review“A smart, timely, eye-opening account. What’s Love Got To Do with It? makes both men’s and women’s hopes and strategies visible. It underscores poor women’s capacity for agency and internationalized thinking without portraying the international system of commercialized sexuality as one in which women and men are meeting on a level playing field.”—Cynthia Enloe, author of The Morning After: Sexual Politics at the End of the Cold War“In this finely hued ethnography, Denise Brennan questions how transnationalization gets transacted, imagined, and experienced through an examination of the sex trade in a specific locale, Sosúa in Dominican Republic. Interweaving the grand themes of political economy and power inequities with those of desire and fantasy—and from the sides of both (foreign) customer and (local) sex worker—she has crafted a richly textured study of a ‘sexscape’ and its brokering of dreams as much as of money and sex.”—Anne Allison, author of Nightwork: Sexuality, Pleasure, and Corporate Masculinity in a Tokyo Hostess Club“An impressive ethnographic study and important contribution to research on Latin America. . . . What’s Love Got to Do With It?, written in plain language and a narrative style, lacks academic jargon and is accessible for a diverse audience. . . . What’s Love Got to Do With It? . . . works to break down simplistic binary ways of thinking about the global sex industry to reveal an extremely complicated transnational industry.” -- Emily Van der Meulen * International Feminist Journal of Politics *“This is a readable ethnography which should interest many scholars on race, gender, and migration. It introduces this under-explored area through rich and accessible photographic and fieldwork data.” -- Jinthana Haritaworn * Ethnic and Racial Studies *"Brennan’s writing is clear and engaging. . . . Book SynopsisEthnographic studies of the role of sexuality and gender in development discourse and policy.Trade Review“This volume is an interesting read for social scientists, social historians, and health care workers. By bringing such richly documented case studies together, it inspires researchers who study sexuality to reflect upon how exactly sexuality is constituted in their time and place…. [T]his volume is a must.” - Anna C. M. Tijsseling, Archives of Sexual Behavior"This collection adopts a sophisticated ethnographic and historical perspective. . . . [I]t will be invaluable to those with an interest in health policy or development as well as anthropology." - Sophie Day, Times Literary Supplement“[A]n excellent anthropological intervention into development studies that deserves a broad interdisciplinary feminist audience. . . . Indeed, each of the chapters in this anthology is an excellent ethnographic case study exploring the situated dynamics of sex and development programs (Adams and Pigg, 21). Assembled together, and organized around clearly articulated common themes, they make this book a truly important one. The book has remarkable geographic and conceptual scope, and the conversation it stages among sexuality studies, science studies, and critical development work is exceptionally innovative. In short, the collection deserves to have broad and lasting impact on thefield.” - Kate Bedford, Signs“[A] refreshing perspective. . . . Philen, American Anthropologist“[A] series of rich and detailed ethnographic studies carried out by anthropologists over the past 10 years in Asia, Africa and Europe. . . . Williams, Feminist Review“This book charts territory that has so far been little explored in gender and development literature, namely the interrelationships between totalizing, ‘scientifically neutral’ concepts of sex and sexuality and local constructs of sex and gender in developing societies.”— - Sylvia Chant, Progress in Development Studies“The book makes a case for thinking in new directions about sexuality in relation to the ‘scientization’ of development policies. It's an important reference work for scholarship in anthropology, public health, and gender and sexuality studies, and in development studies.” - Frauen Solidarität“This important and timely book makes a case for thinking in new directions about sexuality in relation to the ‘scientization’ of development policies. Book SynopsisA comprehensive literary and social history of sexual attitudes and mores in the Soviet Union during the 1920s, that reveals the complex and often contradictory impulses and ideas that permeated the culture.Trade Review“A genuinely compelling narrative of the stormy debates surrounding the all-important issue of sex and sexuality during the first decade of Soviet Power. Carleton’s great achievement [lies] in the powerful lens of sex to spotlight the spectrum of ideological and discursive diversity that characterized the culture and ideology of the 1920s Soviet Union.”—Slavic Review|"Substantially widens the sexual 'canon' of early Soviet writing. Carleton's book introduces many previously neglected figures and depicts the cultural and literary dynamics of 'the sexual question' as complex and nuanced."—Eric Naiman, University of California-Berkeley|"Provides a colorful, detailed canvas of early Soviet society as the author explores the 'sexual question' that obsessed so many young communists during the 1920s. . . . Book SynopsisThis book examines the microaggressions that LGBTQ people face on a daily basis, highlights theirimpact on mental health, and discusses ways mental health providers can help clients process and addressmicroaggressions. In contrast to outright assaults and hate crimes, microaggressions are typically more covert or innocuous in nature—sometimes intentional or unintentional—communicating hostile, insulting, or negative messages about people of oppressed groups. Since the first edition of this book (That''s So Gay!: Microaggressions and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community) was published, there has been a cultural shift towards the acceptance of LGBTQ people in some parts of the United States. Yet many state governments have also passed laws that attack and discriminate against LGBTQ people, while institutional and interpersonal discrimination continues to occur in the lives of LGBTQ people throughout the country. In Mexico, a patriarchal, religious society where women are expected to make themselves sexually available to men and where same-sex experiences for both men and women bring great shame, incest is easily hidden, seldom discussed, and rarely reported to authorities. Book Synopsis“Being a man, like being a woman, is something you have to learn,” Aaron Raz Link remarks. Few would know this better than the coauthor of What Becomes You, who began life as a girl named Sarah and twenty-nine years later began life anew as a gay man. Turning from female to male and from teaching scientist to theatre performer, Link documents the extraordinary medical, social, legal, and personal processes involved in a complete identity change. Hilda Raz, a well-known feminist writer and teacher, observes the process as both an “astonished” parent and as a professor who has studied gender issues. All these perspectives come into play in this collaborative memoir, which travels between women’s experience and men’s lives, explores the art and science of changing sex, maps uncharted family values, and journeys through a world transformed by surgery, hormones, love, and . . . clown school. Combining personal experience and critical anTrade Review“The deepest pleasure of memoir is that it can teach us to see truths through eyes other than our own, and What Becomes You accomplishes exactly that.”—Gayle Salamon, Great Plains Quarterly“Aaron Raz Link’s story is a vital contribution to the oeuvre of transgender literature. . . . It is careful and tender while simultaneously confrontational and challenging.”—Julie R. Enszer, Lambda Book Report“This deeply personal collaborative memoir details the multiple layers of the journey Child and Mom take on the road to Sarah becoming Aaron. This book can’t help but challenge readers to rethink what they know about gender, sex, family relationships, and themselves. A compelling narrative, this is the best book I’ve read this year.”—OutSmart“What Becomes You is the best memoir I’ve read in a decade. It is close to the bone, poetic without an ounce of sentimentality, full of humor and humanity, and excruciating in its self-examination. . . . This book is what happens when two extraordinary writers share intimate tales of self-discovery in prose that’s both exquisite and accessible.”—Glenn Scofield Williams, JustOut“Scientist Link begins his fascinating account of gender reassignment by explaining scientific classification. . . . Raz writes of her child with rare and moving candor. . . . Mother and son’s poignant account becomes one of steadfast maternal love in the midst of changes only partly physical. Both knowingly return, always, to the terrain of the heart.”—Booklist“A blend of essay, memoir and intergenerational dialogue, this title is stranger—and smarter—than the average transsexual memoir. . . . [An] oddly moving, more illuminating and memorable than a straightforward memoir could have been.”—Publishers Weekly Web-Exclusive“[Link and Raz] continue to surprise and challenge us as they pull from their knowledge of biology and feminism, and fairy tales and psychiatry, to wrestle with understanding Link’s transsexuality. The memoir welcomes readers into a study of the struggles and complexity of relationships in any family.”—Bloomsbury Review"What Becomes You is the best kind of book. And not just because it’s funny and poetic, honest, personal, carefully researched and detailed, and hugely informative on the subjects of gender and transsexualism. It’s the best kind of book because it challenges readers to grow in the most critical ways. . . . [It] opens the reader to the present moment, to considering and investigating what 'is' instead of what the reader thinks should be. It makes us think before responding in habitual ways to those who are different from us. And in this world, I can’t think of anything that’s much more important than that right now."—Ellen Santasiero, The Source (Bend, OR)“Throughout, [Link and Raz] place their story in a larger context; the prose, graceful and intelligent, mirrors the breadth of their thought and the depth of their emotion.”—Jesse Hicks, Mid-American Review“What Becomes You is a tranny memoir/rant/documentary that reads like a whirlwind of James Joyce, William S. Book SynopsisA unique rereading of Lacan’s theory of desire and its link to masochism, joy, mysticism, death, and feminine jouissance Of all of Lacan’s reconceptualizations of Freudian psychoanalytic discourse, the most misunderstood are those concerning human beings’ relation to the unconscious play of desire and the neurosis stemming from their attachment to the phallic function. An interpretive tour de force that engages works by surrealists such as André Breton, canonical writers like William Faulkner and James Joyce, and the philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre, Emmanuel Levinas, and Baruch Spinoza, The Decision of Desire is groundbreaking in its proposal that each of us can seek out and reimagine our relation to the infinite aporias of desire and thereby detach from its destructive, repetitive forms in favor of joy and affirmation. Providing insight to the lay reader of psychoanalytic theory as much as to practicing psychoanalysts, The Decision of Desire is a bold reengagement with the legacy of the notion of desire within psychoanalysis and the quandary of how to assume responsibility for desires. For if desire is always already that of the Other and the unconscious, and also a decision that escapes our consciousness of ourselves, how can we assume an ethical relation to it that avoids the vicious circle of disappointment, neurosis, and destruction? Such is the decision of desire attempted within Silvia Lippi’s profound development of a contemporary psychoanalytic thought.Table of ContentsContentsPreface to the American EditionPrefaceAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: Desire—Between Alterity and DecisionI. Book SynopsisBad Books reconstructs how the eighteenth-century French author Nicolas-Edme Rétif de la Bretonne and his writings were at the forefront of the development of modern conceptions of sexuality and pornography. Although certain details are well known (for example, that Rétif’s 1769 treatise on prostitution, Le Pornographe, is the work from which the term pornography is derived, or that he was an avid foot and shoe fetishist), much of this story has been obscured and even forgotten: how the author actively worked to define the category of obscenity and the modern pornographic genre; how he coined the psycho-sexual term “fetish” and played a central role in the formation of theories of sexual fetishism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thus this book is also about literary history and how it is written: it explores how Rétif, perceived as a bad author in both senses of the term, and his contributions were glossed over or condemned, such that the originality of his texts has still not been fully established. Book Synopsis'With their fascinating synthesis of two fields of study, leadership and sexuality, editors James Beggan and Scott Allison provide a forum for scholars to investigate two concepts that have long shaped human behavior and captured both academic interest and the curiosity of the general public. In addition to its appeal to academics, this cross-disciplinary book will interest anyone who has ever had a boss, been on a date, or contemplated an office romance.' -Robert Giacalone, John Carroll University, US Although both leadership and sexuality are important and heavily researched topics, there is little work that addresses the interaction of the two areas. Leadership and Sexuality: Power, Principles, and Processes is a scholarly synthesis of leadership principles with issues related to sexuality and sexual policy-making. The authors' multi-disciplinary analysis of the topic examines sexuality in the context of many different kinds of leadership, exploring both the good and the bad aspects of leadership and sexuality. These integrated topics are examined through three broad areas of study. The first involves individuals who become leaders in sexual domains by advancing new views of human sexuality. The second involves problems that leaders of businesses and other institutions must address as a result of issues related to human sexuality, including sexual harassment and sexually-based discrimination in the workplace. The third area involves understanding how being a leader influences sexual desire and sexual attraction, and may impact the course of workplace romance and the expression of sexuality. Written to be accessible to both laypeople and scholars, this book will appeal to academics and scientists interested in human sexuality as well as many related disciplines, including psychology, sociology, leadership studies, heroism science, political science, religion, and economics. Turley Trade Review'The chapters in this excellent edited volume illuminate what is often overlooked: leadership's sexual side. From the leaders of the sexual change and transformation movements, to those who inflict their heternormative biases on others, to the inappropriate, immoral, and illegal sexual missteps of so many leaders, there is much to be gained by examining, explicitly, the sexuality of leadership. Leaders and leadership are fascinating topics, but add a dash of sex, and they become all the more intriguing.' --Donelson R. Forsyth, University of Richmond, US'The interplay between sexuality and leadership is a provocative topic that people tend to give a wide berth to, like a gorilla in a room. Not surprisingly, Jim and Scott climb on the gorilla, and bring along some collaborators to show us what can happen when leaders shy away from confronting sexuality-based issues within the group, or misinterpret the sexual intent of a behavior, and draws on real-world events many of us would like to forget. Far from sensational, this volume gives us the opportunity to move past the skittishness and finally address sexuality as an influence on social behavior.' --Craig Parks, Washington State University, US'Beggan and Allison's edited book fills the void created by the neglect of scholarship on the links between sexuality and leadership. In this collection of chapters written by social scientists from several fields, authors explore multiple ways in which leadership and sexuality can be related, including, for example, some leaders' sexual abuse of others and the sexuality implications of social dancing. I can't think of an edited book on leadership with a more fascinating and unusual set of chapters.' --Alice Eagly, Northwestern University, USTable of ContentsContents: Introduction Sexuality in Leadership: A Long-neglected topic with vast implications for individuals and society James K. Book SynopsisIn den letzten Jahrzehnten sind Frauen sukzessive in vormals rein männerdominierte Berufsbereiche eingetreten. Book SynopsisBreaching the Citadel, part of the Sexual Violence and Impunity in South Asia series, supported by the International Development Research Centre, Canada, puts India in focus, showcasing new and pathbreaking research on sexual violence and impunity. Bringing together both young and established scholars, the book explores medical protocols, the functioning of the law, the psychosocial making of impunity, histories of sexual violence in places like Kashmir, the media, and sectarian violence, among other timely topics. The essays Urvashi Butalia has collected here were developed through comparative research and a series of workshops, so each entry is peer-reviewed and on the cutting edge of the field. Breaching the Citadel breaks new ground as it uncovers and analyzes the link between sexual violence and the structures and institutions that enable perpetrators to act with impunity.
