Nova Science Publishers Inc Humor: Emotional Aspects, Role in Social

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisExpression of humor begins at an early age in humans and it arises from both cognitive and social-emotional developmental origins. This book presents research on the emotional aspects, role in social interaction, and the health effects of humor. Chapter One begins with a discussion on social-emotional and cognitive aspects of humor, and suggests that the interactions among these developmental factors provide impetus for the expression and appreciation of humor, even during early childhood. Chapter Two supports the Theory of the Absurd and the Empowerment theory as a framework of unfolding the clowning behaviors of a kindergartener and provides a positive way of considering clowning during the early childhood years highlighting its importance to play and social empowerment. Chapter Three studies the impact of humor of closeness to neighbors. Chapter Four aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the fields of social cognition, identity, and humor within adolescence. Chapter Five explores some of the ways that humor may influence workplace health and well-being, while also addressing some of the problematic aspects of humor use. Chapter Six explores areas of healthcare where the deployment of humor or response to patient-initiated humor and/or laughter by a health profession would be considered inappropriate by their peers and/or their patient and/or the patients'' family and friends. Chapter Seven analyses instances of a specific kind of humor that has been identified as jocular mockery because of its frequent occurrence in intimate and close relationships among friends.

Book SynopsisGratitude is a disposition or mood that enables people to respond positively for the benefits they receive from people, nature, or a moment of peaceful bliss. Past research has recognized gratitude as one of the most important virtues a person can have. It has been demonstrated that there are psychological, interpersonal, personality, and physical benefits to being grateful. Chapter One of this book provides an overview of what previous gratitude research has shown, what present research introduces to the literature, and what future research needs to enhance the theoretical understanding of gratitude development in youth. Chapter Two explores the correlations between filial acts and parenting practices. Chapter Three taps into the unique function of routine household chores as a vital means in developing gratitude in children, which plays a key role for an affective family bond between parents and their children. Chapter Four explores whether gratitude explains variance in loneliness after controlling for socio-demographic factors, the Big 5 factors, and life satisfaction. The final chapter reviews the role of both dispositional gratitude and envy on career adaptability in young adults.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMany people are interested in dreams but few have much of interest to say about them. This book is different and worth attention. It began as a simple question, any one of us might ask: Why do some people have success and money, while others spend their lives scraping spare change together for the most basic of things? Why do certain people always seem to make the right decisions & come out on top, even when they get some things wrong? (p8) The surprising answer lay in the world of dreams, their interpretation and of how some dreamers have made self-analysis such as useful personal resource. The author shares many personal experiences as well as those drawn from a general survey of peoples dream world. She explores the entire scene from Sigmund Freud up to more recent guides for the perplexed. She goes deep, revealing over 100 dream symbols, anything from new houses, through dream lovers to aliens. Not revealing the content of a dream to another, at least until you have interpreted and gained from it. This, just one secret she gleaned. Dreams are postcards, straight from your subconscious, telling you about you. One of her informants told a colleague, whom she had hitherto trusted, of a strange dream she had just had about a mutual colleague. then watched mortified as her otherwise trusted but obviously jealous colleague, strode boldly to the dream subject, and told them all the gory details. But the dream was not necessarily about anyone in particular, their appearance was most likely the personification of anxiety about an unfamiliar working environment. A secret unwanted admirer or personification of someones angst - better not say anything? The author is drawing upon the wisdom of sages and writers from times past. All of which shows how dreams reveal the blocks that are holding one''s life up. Along the way, she explores those uncharted depths of consciousness. And shows how successful people have always tuned into the subconscious, conversing with so-called dream counsellors who really did change their future.

Book SynopsisKeep your head held high even on the bad days with 70 mindful self-care strategies to find happiness. In a time when social media encourages us to constantly highlight how great we’re doing and how #Blessed life is, there seems to be little room for the inevitable truth: in every life, there are days that are NOT great. Yet decades in the self-help world have taught Eveline Helmink—editor-in-chief of Happinez magazine and a self-titled cheerleader for failure and discomfort—that true emotional growth comes from realizing that it’s often on our worst days when we learn the most about what empowers, strengthens, and revitalizes us—and yes, brings us happiness. Her compassionate, no-bullshit approach encourages you to detox from the social media world and rethink your coping strategies, exploring topics such as, -The benefits of a good cry -Why, sometimes, it’s okay to give up -Why a fuzzy pink cardigan and some Celine Dion is just as good as a Sanskrit mantra The Handbook for Bad Days is the ultimate guide for anyone who strives to be present, not perfect. Book SynopsisTrauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the "wounded mind". This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

  • Oxford University Press Emotional Truth

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe word truth retains, in common use, traces of origins that link it to trust, troth, and truce, connoting ideas of fidelity, loyalty, and authenticity. The word has become, in contemporary philosophy, encased in a web of technicalities, but we know that a true image is a faithful portrait; a true friend a loyal one. In a novel or a poem, too, we have a feel for what is emotionally true, though we are not concerned with the actuality of events and characters depicted. To have emotions is to care about certain things: we can wonder whether those things are really worth caring about. We can wonder whether our passions reflect who we are, and whether they constitute fitting responses to the vicissitudes of life. So there are two aspects to emotional truth: how well an emotion reflects the threats and promises of the world, and how well it reflects our own individual nature. That is the starting point of this book, which looks first at the analogies and disanalogies between strict propositional truth and a looser, generic sense of truth. As applied to emotions, generic truth is closer to those original meanings: as in a portrait''s fidelity or friend''s loyalty. Taken in this sense, the notion of emotional truth opens up large vistas on areas of life essential to our existence as social beings, and to our concerns with beauty, morality, love, death, sex, knowledge, desire, coherence, and happiness. Each of those topics illustrates some facet of the dominant theme of the book: the crucial but often ambivalent role of our emotions in grounding and yet also sometimes undermining our values. Emotions act, in holistic perspective, as ultimate arbiters of values where different and independently justified standards of value compete.Trade ReviewWhether it is in the discussion of emotions in experiences of art, the way that emotions factor into explaining self-love and self-hate, or their role in relationships of love and friendship, [the author] eschew[s] simple metaphors and offer[s] detailed analysis complete with helpful diagrams and summaries that illustrate a sustained and intimate engagement with these complex and engaging topics. The essays, all written with Sousan flair and trademark themes, range widely over topics in emotion theory. * Robert C. Book SynopsisAccording to an ancient and still popular view -- sometimes known as ''eudaimonism'' -- a person''s well-being, or quality of life, is ultimately determined by his or her level of happiness. According to this view, the happier a person is, the better off he is. The doctrine is controversial in part because the nature of happiness is controversial. In What Is This Thing Called Happiness? Fred Feldman presents a study of the nature and value of happiness. Part One contains critical discussions of the main philosophical and psychological theories of happiness. Feldman presents arguments designed to show that each of these theories is problematic. Part Two contains his presentation and defense of his own theory of happiness, which is a form of attitudinal hedonism. On this view, a person''s level of happiness may be identified with the extent to which he or she takes pleasure in things. Book SynopsisPresenting cutting-edge science in a playful manner, this exploration of a topic that has been veiled by taboo, the psychology of excretion, surveys an assortment of embarrassing processes, shameful disorders and disgusting habits taking the reader on a tour of the history and literature of elimination.Trade Review"Dr. Haslam should be congratulated for creating a unique compendium of information that is so entrenched in our human behavior but rarely thought about or discussed. Psychology in the Bathroom details a wide range of behaviors that are linked to excretory function. Topics such as the 'anal' personality, latrinalia (toilet graffiti, flatulence, scatologic swearing (potty mouth) and medical conditions like irritable bowel syndrome are well covered with regard to their history, psychology and gender and cultural differences in their societal expression. Some topics, like whether the toilet seat should be up or down is nicely discussed in a balanced attempt to solve a seemingly unsolvable domestic problem. I highly recommend this book to psychologists, health care professionals and anyone else interested in understanding such difficult to obtain areas of knowledge." - Douglas A Drossman, Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA and Past President of the American Psychosomatic Society. "Why is it that the psychological study of eating and sex enjoy so much attention from psychologists and the general public, while a no-less universal feature of human experience is ignored? Psychology in the Bathroom argues persuasively for the importance of this overlooked topic, then comprehensively rectifies its neglect. In doing so, this glorious, witty and unerringly pitch-perfect book offers an unusual and compelling window to the human psyche. With a scope far grander than its subject matter, this meticulously researched and wide-ranging study of excretion and related phenomena, both typical and pathological, integrates fascinating and often surprising insights from intersections with psychoanalytic theory, clinical research, the study of emotion, the intimacy of body and mind, language, gender and more. Beautifully written with unfailing clarity, sensitivity and humour, this important, captivating and charming exploration of the psychology of a universal phenomenon is a must-read for researchers, clinicians and general readers alike." - Cordelia Fine (author of Delusions of Gender), Associate Professor, Melbourne Business School, Australia "Imagine if 10% of human nature had been walled off from science by an irrational taboo. Wouldn't you want to peek in and see what was hiding back there? In this extraordinary book, Nick Haslam kicks down the bathroom door and follows the plumbing lines wherever they lead. It's great fun to read - a roller coaster ride through body, mind, and soul." - Jonathan Haidt, Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia, USA "Beautifully written with unfailing clarity and truly enviable humour, this important, captivating and charming exploration of the psychology of a universal phenomenon is a must-read for researchers and general readers alike." - The Psychologist "Toilet reading' of a high order." - Nature "James Bond conducts a sex life that leaves little to the imagination. But does the virile Mr Bond ever use the toilet? The answer is no. Not in literature, movies or television, with rare exceptions...It is high time that psychiatrists have a clear view on the issues involved with toileting, and a book by Professor Nick Haslam, a social psychologist at Melbourne University, is an excellent introduction." Australasian Psychiatry 'A new psychology book lifts the lid on the most natural of human behaviours, yet one of the least explored.' - Daily Mail 'The toilet is a focus of intense emotions, unseemly interests, strange afflictions and earthy humour. Why does the world as a whole look distant, strange, and unfamiliar? How can we know that someone is dead, while at the same time find this utterly unfathomable, impossible? Grief Worlds explores a host of philosophical questions raised by grief, showing how philosophical inquiry can enhance our understanding of grief and vice versa.Throughout the book, Matthew Ratcliffe focuses on the phenomenology of grief: what do experiences of grief consist of, how are they structured, and what can they tell us about the nature of human experience more generally? From toilet paper shortages to kidneys that get thrown away rather than used for transplants; from racial segregation to the perceived “electability” of women in politics; from bottled water to “cancel culture,” we routinely copy others, lie about what we believe, cling to tribes, and silence people.  The question is, Why do we kee

Drawing particularly upon contemporary Kleinian and feminist political theory the author explores the powerful role that emotions such as love, hate and fear play in the development of the human subject.Trade Review'Paul Hoggett has written a cogent and compelling account of the intersections between emotional life and social policy. This book articulates a powerful case for engaging with the emotions in rethinking both the analysis and politics of social welfare. His approach to thinking dynamically about the interrelationships between self, social relations and state around need, power and emancipation recovers vital issues for social policy'. - John Clarke, Professor of Social Policy, The Open University 'Paul Hoggett aims to bring back into debates about welfare the reality of emotionally complex human subjects. He draws on psychoanalysis and feminist social theory to restore the values of creativity and interdependence to a central place in social thinking. Book SynopsisAn entertaining tour of the science of humour and laughterTrade Review"[A] fascinating new book... Weems makes the argument that jokes have deep sources in our human needs and psychologies. Human life is complex, not simple, although we have simple needs (food, sex, safety, sleep, friendship, etc.). Humor is a response to inevitable conflict. The humor isn't in the joke; it is in the attitudes of those telling and hearing the joke. The same joke will be funny sometimes to some people and entirely fail to rouse a response to different people at different times." --Alva Noe, NPR's 13.7 blog "Weems's central idea is that humor and laughter are by-products of the complex workings of the brain, rather than a separate function seated in some funniness control center. Drawing on both current neuroscience research and amusing anecdote, the author steers clear of reductionism and builds his case that humor is more diffuse and complex than other emotions and perceptions." --The Scientist "In Ha!, cognitive neuroscientist Scott Weems analyzes how the punchline of a great joke, like a mini 'eureka!' moment, takes us by surprise and reframes our thinking. Humor, Weems argues, draws on our appetite for solving problems and helps us establish some order in a disordered world... [I]lluminate[s] the inner workings of humor with a verve that befits the subject." --Psychology Today "Humor is worthy of serious academic study, [Weems] argues in his book, Ha! The Science of When We Laugh and Why, because it yields insights into how our brains process a complex world and how that, in turn, makes us who we are... Dr. Weems makes a good case that humor makes us our best selves, and that we should all laugh more... For those of us who are more Grinch than Groucho, Dr. Weems says it is possible to improve your sense of humor, either through training or by increasing your exposure to funny media and people, along with lots of practice. To his credit, he even tried some stand-up of his own one night at a club in Baltimore. Did he kill it? Apparently not. Luckily for us, it looks as if he'll stick to his day job." --New York Times "In Ha!, Scott Weems shows where funniness lies in the head." --Washington Post "[A]n intriguing book." --Wall Street Journal "[Weems] marshals an impressive range of studies and statistics to make his point. He shows that we process jokes in much the same way that we tackle problems, getting a rush of dopamine when we succeed. Laughter, meanwhile, brings all sorts of benefits... [Ha!] makes a compelling case for seeing the comic side of life." --Financial Times "Mirth, points out cognitive neuroscientist Scott Weems, is still something of a conundrum--but one well worth cracking. His journey through the jovial looks in turn at what it is, what it is for and why we should cultivate it." --Nature "Neuroscientist Scott Weems applies the scientific method to the human funny bone to find out what makes us laugh. He discovers that laughter is one way the brain deals with the discomfort of a particularly inappropriate joke, or the surprise of an unexpected punchline." --Discover "Scott Weems melds brain science with corny jokes and factoids to delight readers who've ever wondered why one thing tickles their funny bones, but not the other... Don't expect this book to crack you up. You'll find other things to do that, and this will explain why. For anyone who's ever ROFL, Ha! just raises the bar." --The Bookworm Sez "[A] stimulating overview of what researchers have learned about why we laugh." --Kirkus Reviews "Weems renders extensive research accessible for a wide audience... Humor is a difficult, subjective topic of study, and while Weems doesn't present major conclusions, the information is interesting and the commentary insightful." --Publishers Weekly "Weems explains what humor is, how things become funny, and why evolution gave us laughter... It may seem a bit sad to see humor broken down into its cognitive elements like this; but it's also fascinating. We learn about why certain groups of people find certain types of humor funnier than others, and how important surprise is to humor. We also can appreciate the similarities between getting a joke and having a stroke of insight--the same cognitive processes go into effect when solving problems as when solving jokes, with the same pleasure evoked through dopamine." --Greater Good "A delightful, brainy, historical and contemporary cultural excursus that 'reveals why humor is so idiosyncratic, and why how-to books alone will never help us become funnier people.'... More rewarding than a thousand giggles." --Ralph Nader,The Nader Page "Weems, a neuroscientist, explores what goes on inside our cranium when something makes us laugh; he also explores the essence of humor itself (Why can we tell when something's funny, but a computer cannot?), why we laugh longer and harder at some things than we do at others, and how a healthy sense of humor can help us have a healthy body." --Booklist Online "Move over, Henri Bergson, Weems explains the science of laughter way more charmingly. Our neurons are still cracking up." --Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein, authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar "Scott Weems' Ha! is an excellent, non-technical and engaging introduction to the field of humor studies and a much needed book... Clear, entertaining, and full of personal anecdotes that enliven the discussion." --Salvatore Attardo, Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts, Texas A&M University, and editor-in-chief of Humor "Scott Weems' book Ha! is a superb explanation of humor that is simultaneously entertaining and informative. I enjoyed every page, and at the end came away with new insight into what really makes things funny." --James A. Reggia, Professor of Computer Science, University of Maryland
