  • Dynamic Testing The Nature and Measurement of

Cambridge University Press Dynamic Testing The Nature and Measurement of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe goal of this book is to present and evaluate the concept of dynamic testing. Unlike 'static' tests such as the SAT or IQ tests, dynamic testing emphasizes learning potential rather than past learning accomplishments. The book opens with a theoretical framework of abilities as forms of developing expertise. It then continues with an introduction to dynamic testing and then a capsule history of dynamic testing. The book also reviews the approaches of Feuerstein and Budoff and other diverse approaches to dynamic testing. The Drs Sternberg and Grigorenko present their own three-prong approach to dynamic testing along with two case studies using dynamic testing in their own research. The authors conclude that dynamic testing has enormous potential which has not yet been tapped.Trade Review"...a valuable book for school psychologists interested in understanding more about dynamic testing of abilities and the progress in the area in the last two decades. It is a thorough, readable, and thoughtful summary of the area." School Psychology Quarterly"...written by two of the world's leading authorities on he assessment of human abilities and intelligence...extremely important." APA Review of Books"Strongly grounded in theory, this book affords an in-depth look at the foundation, current research, and application of dynamic testing. Lexington Books A Most Human Enterprise Controversies in the

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA Most Human Enterprise looks at controversial social science research methods and their effects on subjects and researchers. In detailing case studies in which plagiarism was alleged, subjects were mislead or seriously abused, and research denigrated certain demographics, Donald O. Granberg and John F. Galliher demonstrate how social scientists have strayed from the ethical standards of scientific research. Case studies include the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the well-known pseudo-prison work of Philip Zimbardo, the obedience research of Stanley Milgram, and the study of sex in public places by sociologist Laud Humphreys. Many of the studies that were most damaging to human subjects were funded by government, making the current concerns of university Institutional Review Boards seem ironic. A Most Human Enterprise also investigates consequences of plagiarism in the social sciences, the role that whistle blowers can play, and the consequences of their acts. Humans are, of course, capable of lofty and amazing accomplishments. Yet they are, nevertheless, also subject to bias, prejudice, ego involvement, and poor judgment. This book demonstrates the inadequacy of Institutional Review Boards in limiting ethical lapses in the social sciences, and seeks to create a reader more sensitive to the problems and pitfalls that arise in the course of doing social research.Trade ReviewA Most Human Enterprise is an exceptional academic work that combines historical data and personal narrative in creative and meaningful ways. -- Larry W. Book SynopsisDoing Social Research is an easy-to-understand guidebook for readers who have little or no knowledge of the social research process. Written in a clear, straightforward style, this book presents the various topics of social research in the outline form of all sociological research articles: starting with an introduction to the problem being researched, why the problem was chosen, and the theoretical premises of the chosen topic, then progressing to the methods utilized to collect the data, the analysis of the data, and the presentation of the material. By following the research outline, the book provides a concise overview of the most important elements of social research, and as an added bonus, synopses of classical studies introduce readers to the early pioneers of social research.Trade ReviewThe book is a topical and well thought-out text that is accessible to students. It brings up important ethical and practical issues of interest to anyone doing research (or teaching it), and it has better balance among methods and treats observation in good detail. I look forward to using it myself in the social research methods course for undergraduates and in the first of the required graduate courses. One of the strengths of this book lies in the organization of the material. • University Press of America Twist of Fate The Moirae in Everyday Psychology

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFrom Ancient Greece to contemporary times, themes of fate and destiny have served as a central worldview for many. These compelling ideas have guided those in battle, and provided influence and inspirations for politicians, philosophers, and artists. Despite a pervasive concern with fate, we find that an explicit discussion of this construct is absent from psychological theory. Twist of Fate reconciles contemporary psychological research with the ancient and frequently held position of fatalism that was common in that era. The Greek mythological history of the Moirae (the triad of goddesses known as the Fates) offers a unique perspective on human beings by illustrating how fate and destiny influence a variety of behaviors such as drug addiction, spirituality, sexual activity, aggression, and other applied psychological topics. An analysis of the Moirae integrates diverse ideas from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and Nietzsche''s philosophy into a fatalistic view of the human personality. The analysis raises the issues of possibilities for personal change, the role of clinical interventions, and what role freedom actually plays in the human experience. Twist of Fate also accounts for recent developments in personality theory and research by shedding new light on findings from evolutionary psychology, narrative theory, and trait psychology. The result is an integrative personality theory that takes the reader from Nietzsche to neuroscience.Table of ContentsPart 1 Acknowledgements Part 2 I: The Moirae Chapter 3 Twist of Fate: An Introduction to a Classical Idea Chapter 4 Bound by Fate: How the Unconscious Determines Our Lives Part 5 II: Cycles Chapter 6 Daily Drumbeats: The Rhythms of Life Chapter 7 Eternity: Recurrence and Forms Part 8 III: Free Will Chapter 9 My Genese Made Me Do It, Unconsciously! Book SynopsisThe Mathematics of Human Motivation is a pioneering effort to advance the theory of human motivation. It provides powerful, new direction for students of human behavior. Professor Grant has created a theory development book that involves construction and analysis of a mathematical framework for exploring the intricacies of human motivation and satisfaction. Backed by thirty years of study, it draws on multiple disciplines to synthesize a model that has tremendous capacity for answering numerous previously unanswered questions on human motivation, and for predicting human behavior. The model is particularly useful for deriving scores of practical strategies, which organizations can use to enhance human performance and organizational profitability. The book combines contributions from managerial economics, organizational behavior, psychology, human resources, decision theory, and industrial engineering. This is the only book on the market that provides a comprehensive mathematical paradigm for interpreting human motivation issues. It is invaluable in guiding research and application in a wide array of fields.Table of ContentsPart 1 Key Features Part 2 List of Figures Part 3 Preface Part 4 Acknowledgements Chapter 5 The Effort-Net Return Model of Motivation and Satisfaction Chapter 6 The Law of Escalating Marginal Sacrifice and its Corollaries Chapter 7 Interpreting Motivation Phenomena with the Effort-Net Return Model Chapter 8 The Nuances of Penalty Functions Chapter 9 Job Design and Ability as Determinants of Employee Motivation Chapter 10 Integrating the Theory of the Firm and the Theory of Individual Behavior Chapter 11 Adjusting Reward Functions in Response to Productivity and Cost Change Chapter 12 Designing Incentive Systems to Maximize Profitability Chapter 13 Optimizing the Distribution of Constrained Effort Chapter 14 Goal Selection and Employee Motivation Under Uncertainty Chapter 15 Motivation Strategies and Tactics from ENR Chapter 16 Coupling Functions and Perceived Utility Part 17 Bibliography Part 18 Index Part 19 About the Author

Book SynopsisIn 19641965, Hans Helmut Kornhuber and Lüder Deecke achieved a scientific breakthrough with the discovery of the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), or readiness potential. In The Will and its Brain, Kornhuber and Deecke present evidence that proves we can record activity from the human brain occurring prior to our volitional movements or actions. Such preparatory activity is generated by specific brain regions, particularly by the supplementary motor area (SMA) of the frontal lobe, which lies on the inner surface of the brain between the hemispheres. The primary (precentral) motor cortex (MI) later becomes activated in preparing for action. Consequently, the authors discriminate between two components of the preparatory activity of the Bereitschaftspotential: an early SMA-generated BP1 and a late MI-derived BP2. Between BP1 and BP2, the intentional activity runs over the so-called motor loop via the basal ganglia. Kornhuber and Deecke discuss these and other brain processing systems while foTrade Review. . . required reading for anybody interested in what neuroscience has to say about our capacity to make responsible decisions and be captains of our own destiny. -- Daniel C. Sometimes unequivocal answers are elusive, but knowing what questions to ask surely enhances our scientific and applied efforts. A must read. - Gerald Davison, University of Southern California The Handbook of Professional Ethics for Psychologists provides a much needed review of the philosophical issues and unanswered questions raised by the Code of Ethics of the American Psychological Association. Rather than take ethical pronouncements as dogma not to be questioned but simply understood and observed, William T. O'Donohue and Kyle E. Ferguson encourage a questioning, critical attitude. Book SynopsisThis classic text on multiple regression is noted for its nonmathematical, applied, and data-analytic approach. Readers profit from its verbal-conceptual exposition and frequent use of examples. The applied emphasis provides clear illustrations of the principles and provides worked examples of the types of applications that are possible. Researchers learn how to specify regression models that directly address their research questions. An overview of the fundamental ideas of multiple regression and a review of bivariate correlation and regression and other elementary statistical concepts provide a strong foundation for understanding the rest of the text. Book SynopsisThis volume focuses on and exemplifies how ethnography--a research tool devoted to looking at human interaction as a cultural process rather than individual psychology--can shed light on educational processes framed by the complex, internationalized societies in which we live today. Part I offers theoretical chapters about ethnography and examples of innovative ethnography from particular perspectives. In Part II, the emphasis is on the application of ethnographic approaches to educational settings. Each contribution not only takes the reader on a thoughtful and enlightening journey, but raises issues that are important to both educators and ethnographers, including the relationship of researcher to subject, the meaning of participant in participant observation, and ways to give voice to disenfranchised players, and on the complex ways in which all parties experience identities such as race in the modern world.Innovations in Educational Ethnography: Theory, MethodTrade Review"I heartily recommend this book and enjoyed having an opportunity to review it. Book SynopsisCategorical data are quantified as either nominal variables--distinguishing different groups, for example, based on socio-economic status, education, and political persuasion--or ordinal variables--distinguishing levels of interest, such as the preferred politician or the preferred type of punishment for committing burglary. This new book is a collection of up-to-date studies on modern categorical data analysis methods, emphasizing their application to relevant and interesting data sets. This volume concentrates on latent class analysis and item response theory. These methods use latent variables to explain the relationships among observed categorical variables. Latent class analysis yields the classification of a group of respondents according to their pattern of scores on the categorical variables. This provides insight into the mechanisms producing the data and allows the estimation of factor structures and regression models conditional on the latent class structure. Item resTrade Review"New Developments in Categorical Data Analysis for the Social and Behavioral Sciences is a collection of up-to-date studies on modern categorical data analysis methods, emphasizing their application to relevant and interesting data sets. Book SynopsisThere is a myth that people with mental disorders comply poorly with treatment. In fact, psychiatric patients are no more likely than patients in other medical specialities to go against the advice of their doctor. That said, it is easy to find instances where psychotropic medication is refused by the supposed beneficiary. The value of neuroleptic treatment in schizophrenia is now widely accepted. Failure to take such treatment is associated with relapse and relapse may endanger the patient and other people. Despite this, people with schizophrenia frequently fail to take their treatment. This study shows that one third can be expected to be non-compliant within two years of leaving a general adult psychiatry ward. It also looks at the reasons for this: the influence of drug side-effects is examined, as well as the impact of each patient''s attitude to treatment and whether or not they have stopped taking prescribed medication in the past.Table of ContentsLiterature Review. Book SynopsisThe contributors to Explorations in Self Psychology, volume 19 of the Progress in Self Psychology series, wrestle with two interrelated questions at the nexus of contemporary discussions of technique: How authentic and relationally invested should the self psychologically informed analyst be, and what role should self-disclosure play in the treatment process?  The responses to these questions embrace the full range of clinical possibilities. Dudley and Walker argue that empathically based interpretation precludes self-disclosure whereas Miller argues in favor of authentic self-expression and against the self psychologist''s frustrating attempt to decenter from frustration or anger. Consideration of the utility of a consistently empathic stance continues with Weisel-Barth''s clinical presentation and the discussions that it elicits about management of her patient''s primary destructiveness.
