    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe book offers a systematic study of selected aesthetic and moral emotions, such as beauty, admiration, disgust, anger, guilt, and the feeling of (in)justice. The authors contemplate the possibilities of their conceptual grasp and describe their psychosomatic phenomena from a ?rst-person perspective. They focus on a hermeneutic-phenomenological-existential analysis of the fundamental elements, structure, and signi?cance of these types of emotions in both individual and collective human experiences. Additionally, they provide interdisciplinary insights into the subject, enabling the comprehension of these emotional states from various perspectives, including linguistic, psychological, philosophical, cognitive scienti?c, legal, and theological. They document that we are not rational systems that have emotions, but rather emotional systems that occasionally behave rationally. The text simultaneously outlines a new theory of emotions and explores the possibilities for their linguistic apprehension through the geometry of thought.

    Out of stock

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAn analysis of metaphor in the legal texts of the Old Testament using the tools of cognitive and cultural linguistics. The Old Testament is rich in metaphor. Metaphorical expressions appear not only in places where you might expect them, like the poetic verses, but also in the legal texts. They appear in the preambles to collections of laws, in their final summaries, in general considerations on compliance with and violation of the law, in texts concerning the meaning of the law, and those dealing with topics now reserved for legal theory and legal philosophy. These metaphorical expressions reveal how the authors of the relevant Torah/Law texts understood their function in society and what the society of the time preferred in the law. Anchored in cognitive and cultural linguistics, The Torah/Law Is a Journey investigates Hebrew metaphorical expressions concerning the key Old Testament concept of Torah/Law. Ivana Procházková identifies Hebrew conceptual metaphors and explicates the metaphorical expressions. She also uses cognitive linguistic analysis to look at modern translations of selected metaphorical expressions into Czech and English. Procházková closes with an analysis of the metaphors used in the Council of Europe publication Compass: Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People to conceptualize human rights.Trade Review"It is a benefit to those interested in the intersection between cognitive linguistics and biblical studies, and especially to those who are intrigued by 'the Torah/Law is a journey' metaphor." * The Catholic Biblical Quarterly *Table of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1. • The Language of Food in Japanese: Cognitive

John Benjamins Publishing Co The Language of Food in Japanese: Cognitive

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMany studies on the language of food examine English or adopt discourse analysis. This volume makes a fresh attempt to analyze Japanese, focusing on non-discursive units. It offers state-of-the-art data-oriented studies, including methods of analysis in line with Cognitive Linguistics. It orchestrates relatable and intriguing topics, from sound-symbolism in rice cracker naming to meanings of aesthetic sake taste terms. The chapters show that the language of food in Japanese is multifaceted: for instance, expressivity is enhanced by ideophones, as sensory words iconically depicting perceptual experiences and as nuanced words flexibly participating in neologization; context-sensitivity is exemplified by words deeply imbued with socio-cultural constructs; creativity is portrayed by imaginative expressions grounded in embodied experience. The volume will be a valuable resource for students and researchers, not only in linguistics but also in neighboring disciplines, who seek deeper insights into how language interacts with food in Japanese or any other language.Trade ReviewMuch of the work on the linguistics of food has been conducted on the English language. This book makes a strong contribution to the field by providing an in-depth analysis of the language of food in Japanese. This analysis reveals innovative linguistic patterns and uses. For example, Japanese binomial adjectives (Chapter 4) are a novel ideophone construction that can be used in creative descriptions of food. Not only does the study of Japanese add to the field in terms of generalizability, but it also opens up fascinating new directions of research, by highlighting unique aspects of the Japanese language in relation to food. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and look forward to follow-up research that will no doubt emerge from this volume. -- Laura Speed, Radboud University

John Benjamins Publishing Co Beyond Disfluency: The interplay of speech,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book pioneers a tridimensional approach to (dis)fluency, evaluating fluency across three different dimensions, mainly speech, gesture, and interaction. Drawing from an extensive video dataset covering different languages and speech genres in French and English, the present research goes beyond traditional production-oriented models of so-called ‘disfluency’ phenomena, and aims to unravel the complexities of human multimodal production and interactive processes. Designed for linguists, communication scholars, and researchers, this work resonates with the latest trends in different fields (Second Language Acquisition, Interactional Linguistics, and Gesture studies). It introduces a fresh perspective on disfluency by integrating visual-gestural features, such as hand gestures, gaze, and facial expressions, captured in situated interaction.

Book SynopsisThis book represents the state of the art in cognitive stylistics a rapidly expanding field at the interface between linguistics, literary studies and cognitive science. The twelve chapters combine linguistic analysis with insights from cognitive psychology and cognitive linguistics in order to arrive at innovative accounts of a range of literary and textual phenomena. The chapters cover a variety of literary texts, periods, and genres, including poetry, fictional and non-fictional narratives, and plays. Some of the chapters provide new approaches to phenomena that have a long tradition in literary and linguistic studies (such as humour, characterisation, figurative language, and metre), others focus on phenomena that have not yet received adequate attention (such as split-selves phenomena, mind style, and spatial language). This book is relevant to students and scholars in a wide range of areas within linguistics, literary studies and cognitive science.Table of Contents1. Acknowledgements; 2. • The Shared Mind: Perspectives on

John Benjamins Publishing Co The Shared Mind: Perspectives on

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe cognitive and language sciences are increasingly oriented towards the social dimension of human cognition and communication. The hitherto dominant approach in modern cognitive science has viewed “social cognition” through the prism of the traditional philosophical puzzle of how individuals solve the problem of understanding Other Minds. The Shared Mind challenges the conventional “theory of mind” approach, proposing that the human mind is fundamentally based on intersubjectivity: the sharing of affective, conative, intentional and cognitive states and processes between a plurality of subjects. The socially shared, intersubjective foundation of the human mind is manifest in the structure of early interaction and communication, imitation, gestural communication and the normative and argumentative nature of language. In this path breaking volume, leading researchers from psychology, linguistics, philosophy and primatology offer complementary perspectives on the role of intersubjectivity in the context of human development, comparative cognition and evolution, and language and linguistic theory.Table of Contents1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe human mind is a marvelous device that effectively regulates mental activities and facilitates amendable cognitive behaviour across several domains such as attention, memory, and language processing. For multilinguals, the mind also represents and manages more than one language system—a mental exercise which may lead to cognitive benefits. Through an in-depth exploration of these issues, Cognitive Control and Consequences of Multilingualism presents original studies and new perspectives which are cutting-edge and feature traditional and innovative methodologies such as ERPs, fMRIs, eye-tracking, picture- and numeral naming, the Simon, flanker, and oculomotor Stroop tasks, among others. The studies in this book investigate prominent themes in multilingual language control for both comprehension and production and probe the notion of a cognitive advantage that may be a result of multilingualism. The growing number of researchers, practitioners, and students alike will find this volume to be an instrumental source of readings that illuminates how one mind accommodates and controls multiple languages and the consequences it has on human cognition in general.Table of Contents1.
