Cappelen Damm Akademisk Idea Work: Lessons of the Extraordinary in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat does it take to find oil in an area where many have tried, but failed? What does it take to design buildings that become prize-winning cultural landmarks? And what can the best architects, oil explorers, business lawyers, journalists, and business developers within banking and trading analysis have in common? Idea Work can provide the answers. This book builds on a four-year research project and describes what extraordinary idea work looks like in practice. The authors take you behind the scenes of some of Norway''s leading companies and show how surprisingly similarly they work when they are working creatively to develop and realise new ideas. The book gives us, for example, a glimpse of how Snøhetta designed the Opera and the 9/11 memorial, and how explorers at Statoil discovered the most oil of all oil companies in the world in 2011. Narratives are presented on how prepping, sketches, pin-ups, drama, wonder, and punk are important aspects of the extraordinary. Examples are supported by theory, placing this book at the forefront of international research. Idea Work will appeal to practitioners as well as students. It recounts engaging stories from actual production processes and combines new theoretical perspectives with practical advice. It will also be of interest to anyone working with development, particularly with developing new ideas. From a professional standpoint, this book is an uncommon contribution to describing and understanding creativity as something collective and grounded in everyday activity.

Book SynopsisAt its presentation in 1955, the Citroën DS was a sensation and a magnet for designers, philosophers, and politicians alike. No other automobile was able to combine form and technology so coherently and seemingly effortlessly. Radical in its implementation and revolutionary in terms of comfort and safety, the DS is one of the most innovative design icons of the 20th century. In collaboration with Lars Müller Publishers, the Swiss architect Christian Sumi published the new edition of AS in DS by Alison and Peter Smithson in 2001. In this new book, he now analytically examines the characteristics of this classic vehicle, which he documents in carefully arranged picture series and with drawings by Flaminio Bertoni and the Citroën design team, such as of the body, the chassis, or the legendary hydraulics. Using image essays from advertising campaigns for the Citroën DS, Sumi critically examines its iconization and reception, along with theories that discuss the phenomenon in both a contemporary and philosophical context.

We think we know it, whether it reflects calming minimalism, avant-garde catwalk fashion or the Kawaii aesthetic populating Tokyo streets. But these stereotypes do not portray the creativity, generosity and sheer hard work that has gone into creating design industries in Japan. In Designing Modern Japan, Sarah Teasley traces the stories of the people who shaped and shape design in modern Japan. Key to the account is how design was seen as a strategy to help the nation thrive during turbulent times, and for making life better along the way. Superbly illustrated, Designing Modern Japan appeals to the wide audience for Japanese design, history and culture.Table of ContentsSarah Teasley is Tutor in History of Design and Critical and Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art, London. Book SynopsisThe catalogue of a unique collection, ROBOTS 1:2 presents the space-themed toys in the R. F. Robot Collection held by the Vitra Design Museum. "Small kinetic sculptures of great originality": that is how Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra and founder of the Vitra Design Museum, describes the objects in his collection. In many years of careful research, he compiled a rare Wunderkammer of toy robots made mainly in Japan between 1937 and 1973. The term robot was coined in 1921 by Czech writer Karel Capek in his play R. U. R., which foreshadowed some of the impact robots have had on human lives – from relieving us of hard, dangerous, or unpleasant tasks to taking over our jobs, from small everyday dependencies to shifts in social power dynamics. While the large-format predecessor to this book presented the exhibits in their original size, ROBOTS 1:2 shows the space toys on a 1:2 scale. The largest robot determines the size of the book: this conveys a sense of the uncanny ambivalence that clings to even the most playful representatives of their kind. The fantastic pictures on the original packaging often displayed alongside the figurines vividly illustrate an image of the future that by this time is itself part of our past. QR codes give access to short films showing a number of robots in action. The R. F. Robot Collection, housed in the »Wunderkammer« on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, can be visited as part of a guided tour. For more information please go to www.design-museum.de.

Book SynopsisFrom 13th century Franciscan monks to Beyoncé in Black is King, Making a Spectacle charts the fascinating ascension of eyeglasses, from an unsightly but useful tool to fashion''s must-have accessory. The power of glasses to convey a range of vivid messages about their wearers have made them into a billion-dollar business that appeals to cool kids and rock stars and those who want to be like them, but the fashionable history of eyeglasses was fraught with anxiety and drama. At the beginning of the 20th century, the assessment in Vogue and Harper''s Bazaar was that spectacles were invariably disfiguring. Invisibility was the best option, and glasses were only to be put on once the lights at the opera went dark. While variations of that glasses-shaming sentiment appeared at regular intervals over the next 100 years or so, eyeglasses continued to evolve into an endless array of shapes, colors, purposes, and personalities. Once sunglasses took off in the 1930s, the magazine editorial made glasses a conspicuous part of the fashion narrative. Eyeglasses went to the ski slopes, the stables, the beach, the Havana hotel. Plastic innovations made a candy-colored rainbow of cat-eyes and starlet styles possible. Suddenly, everyone had the opportunity to look like Jackie O on vacation in Capri.Making a Spectacle traces contemporary high fashion frames back to their origins: the military aviator, the glam cat eye, the nerdly Oxford, the high-tech shield, the fanciful butterfly, the lowly rimless, and other styles all make an appearance. Featuring interviews with influential designers, makers, and purveyors of glasses including Adam Selman, Kerin Rose Gold, and l.a. Eyeworks, Making a Spectacle also takes a look at today''s most cutting edge eyewear, showing the reader the latest and most innovative ways to see and be seen.

Instead, this book subscribes to the assumption that AI systems will provide a maximal advantage when the system is specifically designed to augment human intelligence. It provides methods for designing effective systems that include one or more humans and one or more AI entities and uses the approach that assumes automation does not replace human activity but fundamentally changes the structure of human work when AI is added to existing systems.Integrating Artificial and Human Intelligence through Agent Oriented Systems Design discusses the potential impact of AI on human work and life and explores why teamwork is necessary today for complex work environments. The book explains the processes and methods humans employ to effectively team with one another and presents the elements of artificial agents that permit the

CRC Press Evaluation of Rail Technology A Practical Human

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRapid advancements in train control and in-cab technologies provide significant opportunities for rail operators to improve efficiency and enhance their operations. New technologies often provide elegant solutions to existing problems or new capabilities for the operator. However, new technologies may also represent a significant form of risk. Thus, it is important to balance the potential for significant improvement with justifiable concern about how the technology may unpredictably change the nature of the work. If a technology is designed and implemented without considering the substantive human factors concerns, that technology may lead to unintended consequences that can introduce safety issues and disrupt network performance. It is important to note that even a well-designed and beneficial technology may be rejected by the users who see it as a threat to their jobs, status or working conditions. This book discusses the issues surrounding rail technology and introduces a âtoolkitâ of human factors evaluation methods. The toolkit provides a practical and operationally focused set of methods that can be used by managers considering investing in technology, staff charged with implementing a technology, and consultants engaged to assist with the design and evaluation process. This toolkit can help to ensure that new rail technologies are thoughtfully designed, effectively implemented, and well received by users so that the significant investment associated with developing rail technologies is not wasted.Trade Review’This is not a beginner’s guide to Human Factors but then the rail industry is no longer a beginner. It is a technical book, rich in detail and insight, but also one that has itself been designed for Human Use. It is easy to read, being in equal part a railway book as much as it is a human factors one.’ Rail Professional, December 2013Table of ContentsForeword; Introduction: the promise and perils of new technology, Drew Dawson, Chris Bearman, Anjum Naweed and Gareth Hughes; Key technology-related human factors issues, Chris Bearman; Resistance to technology, Janette Rose and Chris Bearman; Effective user feedback: the practical value of mock-ups, Gareth Hughes, Airdrie Long, Anne Maddock and Chris Bearman; Qualitative research rules: using qualitative and ethnographic methods to access the human dimensions of technology, Kirrilly Thompson; Future enquiry: a participatory ergonomics approach to evaluating new technology, Verna Blewitt and Andrea Shaw; Using task analysis to inform the development and evaluation of new technologies, Janette Rose, Chris Bearman and Anjum Naweed; Evaluating your train simulator part I: the physical environment, Anjum Naweed, Ganesh Balakrishnan and Jillian Dorrian; Evaluating your train simulator part II: the task environment, Jillian Dorrian and Anjum Naweed; Applying the theories and measures of situation awareness to the rail industry, Janette Rose, Chris Bearman and Anne Maddock; Index.

Book SynopsisWhy do we readily dispose of some things, whereas we keep and maintain others for years, despite their obvious wear and tear? Can a greater understanding of aesthetic value lead to a more strategic and sustainable approach to product design? Aesthetic Sustainability: Product Design and Sustainable Usage offers guidelines for ways to reduce, rethink, and reform consumption. Its focus on aesthetics adds a new dimension to the creation, as well as the consumption, of sustainable products. The chapters offer innovative ways of working with expressional durability in the design process.Aesthetic Sustainability: Product Design and Sustainable Usage is related to emotional durability in the sense that the focus is on the psychological and sensuous bond between subject and object. But the subjectobject connection is based on more than emotions: aesthetically sustainable objects continuously add nourishment to human life. This book explores the difference between Trade Review"Kristine Harper has written a great book on a relevant topic we all ought to contemplate on and react to. She is well-informed of the history of aesthetic ideas and has managed to transform her knowledge innovatively into an independent, well-written and inspiring research contribution that can also be read by a broader audience." — Professor Dorthe Jørgensen, Philosophy and History of Ideas, Aarhus University, Denmark"As the window for action against irreversible climate changes is narrowing, Harper offers timely and practical advice on how, as designers and consumers, we can take responsibility for creating a sustainable future. Though informed by a deep understanding of the complexities of aesthetics and design, her book is highly accessible." — Per Galle, Associate Professor, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design."With Aesthetic Sustainability Kristine Harper shines light on the role of aesthetics and how we as humans emotionally connect with the objects that surround us in everyday life, and through that, she manages to humanize the concept of sustainability." — Hanka van der Voet, Head of MA Fashion Strategy at the ArtEZ University of the Arts, The Netherlands"Most books on sustainable design focus on the effects of design on the environment mainly in terms of recycling, reuse and repair. Kristine Harper’s book "Aesthetic Sustainability – Product Design and Sustainable Usage" introduces the additional and undervalued importance of the aesthetic qualities of sustainable design. She argues that aesthetics are key to creating sustainability that is lasting, due to the added emotional values that both appeal to and nourish the user. A factor most sustainable designers have ignored. The book discusses the interaction and relationship between the three concepts, design, sustainability and aesthetics in depth, thereby giving the reader an (almost) how-to guide to producing aesthetic, sustainable and durable design. A book to be recommended for both professional practitioners as well as students of design." — Karen Blincoe, Director Chora Connection"The book addresses a highly relevant subject from an unexpected angle. This broadens our perspectives on sustainability to be about more than reusing and recycling but also about providing aesthetic experiences. In particular, the model for an aesthetic strategy provides a useful tool, as it brings forth relevant concepts for exploring and reflecting on choices of expression and how such choices might affect the perception of a design product." Book SynopsisWhat do things mean? What does the life of everyday objects reveal about people and their material worlds? Has the quest for the real thing' become so important because the high-tech world of total virtuality threatens to engulf us?This pioneering book bridges design theory and anthropology to offer a new and challenging way of understanding the changing meanings of contemporary human-object relations. The act of consumption is only the starting point of object's lives. Thereafter they are transformed and invested with new meanings and associations that reflect and assert who we are. Defining designed things as things with attitude differentiates the highly visible fashionable object from ordinary aretefacts that are too easily taken for granted. Through case studies ranging from reproduction furniture to fashion and textiles to clutter', the author traces the connection between objects and authenticity, ephemerality and self-identity. Beyond this, she shows the mateTrade ReviewWild Things is particularly relevant to ongoing discussions of the politics of things. This is because of both Attfield’s choice to focus on voices hitherto unheard from – working class, domestic, female voices – and her effort to situate identity construction – in particular gender and sexual identity – within the her subjects’ choices to buy, use, and accrue things. * Design and Culture *It is wonderful to see a reprint of this seminal wide-ranging, thought-provoking book that, challenges us to consider, and then re-consider, how we think about things, and write about them too. I read the book in early draft form and often return to it; sometimes to think through things raised in it, at others for inspiration, or to remember her pioneering contributions to contemporary material culture studies and reflect upon her enormous impact upon generations of students and scholars across a range of disciplines. A designer before she turned to design history and discovered a passion for anthropology and critical theory, as well as for “history from below” her lively intellect knew no disciplinary boundaries. In Wild Things Judy’s love of objects and people, ideas, herstories/histories, and grappling with theory, is everywhere apparent. Enjoy the journey you take with her. * Pat Kirkham, Professor of Design History at Kingston University, London, UK *Table of ContentsList of illustrations Preface to the original edition Preface to the current edition by Claudia Marina Introduction: The material culture of everyday life Part I: Things 1. Book SynopsisSustainability is now a buzzword both among professionals and scholars. However, though climate change and resource depletion are now widely recognized by business as major challenges, and while new practices like ''green design'' have emerged, efforts towards change remain weak and fragmented. Exposing these limitations, Design Futuring systematically presents ideas and methods for Design as an expanded ethical and professional practice. Design Futuring argues that responding to ethical, political, social and ecological concerns now requires a new type of practice that recognizes design''s importance in overcoming a world made unsustainable. Illustrated throughout with international case material, Design Futuring presents the author''s ground-breaking ideas in a coherent framework, focusing specifically on the ways in which concerns for ethics and sustainability can change the practice of Design for the twenty-first century. Design Futuring - a pathfinding text for the new era - extenTrade ReviewDesign Futuring defines redirective practice as a critical new paradigm for design-a way of engaging design and sustainability as they are implicated in and essential to our very survival.
