  • Stein's Method And Applications

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Stein's Method And Applications

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisStein's startling technique for deriving probability approximations first appeared about 30 years ago. Since then, much has been done to refine and develop the method, but it is still a highly active field of research, with many outstanding problems, both theoretical and in applications. This volume, the proceedings of a workshop held in honour of Charles Stein in Singapore, August 2003, contains contributions from many of the mathematicians at the forefront of this effort. It provides a cross-section of the work currently being undertaken, with many pointers to future directions. The papers in the collection include applications to the study of random binary search trees, Brownian motion on manifolds, Monte-Carlo integration, Edgeworth expansions, regenerative phenomena, the geometry of random point sets, and random matrices.Table of ContentsZero Biasing in One and Higher Dimensions, and Applications (L Goldstein & G Reinert); Poisson Limit Theorems for the Appearances of Attributes (O Chryssaphinou et al.); Normal Approximation in Geometric Probability (M D Penrose & J E Yukich); Stein's Method, Edgeworth's Expansions and a Formula of Barbour (V Rotar); Stein's Method for Compound Poisson Approximation (A Xia); The Independence Number for Minimal Spanning Trees (S Lee & Z Su); Strong Memoryless Times (T Erhardsson); Multivariate Poisson-Binomial Approximation (A D Barbour); A BerryEsseen Bound for the t-Statistic (Q-M Shao); An Application of Stein's Method to Maxima in Hypercubes (Z D Bai et al.); Expected Length of an MST (J A Fill & J M Steele); Spectra of Random Matrices with Martingale Structure (F Gtze & A Tikhomirov); Characterization of Brownian Motion on Manifolds (E P Hsu); On Some Randomized Quadrature Rules (W-L Loh); Matrix Correlation Statistics (A D Barbour & L Chen); Random Binary Search Trees (L Devroye).

  • Introduction To Stein's Method, An

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Introduction To Stein's Method, An

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA common theme in probability theory is the approximation of complicated probability distributions by simpler ones, the central limit theorem being a classical example. Stein's method is a tool which makes this possible in a wide variety of situations. Traditional approaches, for example using Fourier analysis, become awkward to carry through in situations in which dependence plays an important part, whereas Stein's method can often still be applied to great effect. In addition, the method delivers estimates for the error in the approximation, and not just a proof of convergence. Nor is there in principle any restriction on the distribution to be approximated; it can equally well be normal, or Poisson, or that of the whole path of a random process, though the techniques have so far been worked out in much more detail for the classical approximation theorems. This volume of lecture notes provides a detailed introduction to the theory and application of Stein's method, in a form suitable for graduate students who want to acquaint themselves with the method. It includes chapters treating normal, Poisson and compound Poisson approximation, approximation by Poisson processes, and approximation by an arbitrary distribution, written by experts in the different fields. The lectures take the reader from the very basics of Stein's method to the limits of current knowledge.Trade Review"All the lectures have been given by eminent experts working in the area of Stein's method and provide details and unsolved problems along with a list of very useful references. These lectures will be very valuable for both experts and researchers wishing to explore the powerful approximation method proposed by Charles Stein."Mathematical ReviewsTable of ContentsStein's Method for Normal Approximation (L Chen & Q-M Shao); Stein's Method for Poisson and Compound Poisson Approximation (T Erhardsson); Stein's Method and Poisson Process Approximation (A Xia); Three General Approaches to Stein's Method (G Reinert).

  • Cooperative Extensions Of The Bayesian Game

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Cooperative Extensions Of The Bayesian Game

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is the very first comprehensive monograph in a burgeoning, new research area — the theory of cooperative game with incomplete information with emphasis on the solution concept of Bayesian incentive compatible strong equilibrium that encompasses the concept of the Bayesian incentive compatible core. Built upon the concepts and techniques in the classical static cooperative game theory and in the non-cooperative Bayesian game theory, the theory constructs and analyzes in part the powerful n-person game-theoretical model characterized by coordinated strategy-choice with individualistic incentives, the influence of outsiders' strategy choice upon the feasibility and implications of coalitional attainability, and incomplete information. The book presents the basic results of this theory. It also presents the research results to date on the simple, but central economic model of Bayesian pure exchange economy, and also on an alternative approach, anonymous coalition formation. The theory presented here points to an important future research direction in economics. In particular, it has the potential to provide game-theoretical foundations of organizational analysis in which organizations (coalitions) as corporations institute a non-market resource allocation mechanism while using the market resource allocation mechanism at the same time. The book provides appraisals of the various concepts, setups and results established to date as well as many discussions on philosophical issues on different approaches in the area, thereby clarifying the applicability and limitations of the current theory. It also contains numerous examples illustrating various concepts and points of discussions.Cooperative Extensions of the Bayesian Game is an essential reference in strategic cooperative game theory, and serves as an informative textbook for PhD courses in advanced economic theory, mathematical economics, game theory, and industrial organization.

  • Random Walk In Random And Non-random Environments

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Random Walk In Random And Non-random Environments

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe simplest mathematical model of the Brownian motion of physics is the simple, symmetric random walk. This book collects and compares current results — mostly strong theorems which describe the properties of a random walk. The modern problems of the limit theorems of probability theory are treated in the simple case of coin tossing. Taking advantage of this simplicity, the reader is familiarized with limit theorems (especially strong ones) without the burden of technical tools and difficulties. An easy way of considering the Wiener process is also given, through the study of the random walk.Since the first edition was published in 1990, a number of new results have appeared in the literature. The original edition contained many unsolved problems and conjectures which have since been settled; this second revised and enlarged edition includes those new results. Three new chapters have been added: frequently and rarely visited points, heavy points and long excursions. This new edition presents the most complete study of, and the most elementary way to study, the path properties of the Brownian motion.Trade Review"This book tells a very personal and exciting story from the point of view of one of the dominant contributors to the study of random walks, and will be of interest to those looking for intriguing open problems in the theory of random walks and associated strong limit laws." Mathematical Reviews "The reader interested in the theory of random walks in non-random environments and also on the associated strong limit laws will find this book very interesting and also very useful." Book SynopsisTwo features of Processing Random Data differentiate it from other similar books: the focus on computing the reproducibility error for statistical measurements, and its comprehensive coverage of Maximum Likelihood parameter estimation techniques. The book is useful for dealing with situations where there is a model relating to the input and output of a process, but with a random component, which could be noise in the system or the process itself could be random, like turbulence. Parameter estimation techniques are shown for many different types of statistical models, including joint Gaussian. The Cramer-Rao bounds are described as useful estimates of reproducibility errors. Finally, using an example with a random sampling of turbulent flows that can occur when using laser anemometry the book also explains the use of conditional probabilities.Table of ContentsBasic Statistical Concepts; Measurement of Random Variables; Time Series; Parameter Estimation; Random Sampling.

Book SynopsisArthur Lyon Bowley, the founding father of modern statistics, was an important and colorful figure and a leader in cementing the foundations of statistical methodology, including survey methodology, and of the applications of statistics to economical and social issues during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In many respects, he was ahead of his time. The giants in this field around that time were largely concentrated in the British Isles and Scandinavian countries; among these contributors, Arthur Bowley was one of the most active in revolutionizing statistical methodology and its economic applications. However, Bowley has been vastly undervalued by subsequent commentators — while hundreds of articles and books have been written on Karl Pearson, those on Arthur Bowley amount to a dozen or less. This book seeks to remedy this and fill in an important omission in the monographical literature on the history of statistics. In particular, the recent resurgence of interest in poverty research has led to a renewed interest in Bowley's legacy.Table of ContentsBiography and Scientific Activities of A L Bowley; Statistical Papers and Books; Economic Papers and Books; A L Bowley's Everlasting Effect.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Analysis On Gaussian Spaces

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis'Written by a well-known expert in fractional stochastic calculus, this book offers a comprehensive overview of Gaussian analysis, with particular emphasis on nonlinear Gaussian functionals. In addition, it covers some topics that are not frequently encountered in other treatments, such as Littlewood-Paley-Stein, etc. This coverage makes the book a valuable addition to the literature. Many results presented in this book were hitherto available only in the research literature in the form of research papers by the author and his co-authors.'Mathematical Reviews ClippingsAnalysis of functions on the finite dimensional Euclidean space with respect to the Lebesgue measure is fundamental in mathematics. The extension to infinite dimension is a great challenge due to the lack of Lebesgue measure on infinite dimensional space. Instead the most popular measure used in infinite dimensional space is the Gaussian measure, which has been unified under the terminology of 'abstract Wiener space'.Out of the large amount of work on this topic, this book presents some fundamental results plus recent progress. We shall present some results on the Gaussian space itself such as the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, Small ball estimates, large tail estimates. The majority part of this book is devoted to the analysis of nonlinear functions on the Gaussian space. Derivative, Sobolev spaces are introduced, while the famous Poincaré inequality, logarithmic inequality, hypercontractive inequality, Meyer's inequality, Littlewood-Paley-Stein-Meyer theory are given in details. This book includes some basic material that cannot be found elsewhere that the author believes should be an integral part of the subject. For example, the book includes some interesting and important inequalities, the Littlewood-Paley-Stein-Meyer theory, and the Hörmander theorem. The book also includes some recent progress achieved by the author and collaborators on density convergence, numerical solutions, local times.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe book is aimed at graduate students and researchers with basic knowledge of Probability and Integration Theory. It introduces classical inequalities in vector and functional spaces with applications to probability. It also develops new extensions of the analytical inequalities, with sharper bounds and generalizations to the sum or the supremum of random variables, to martingales and to transformed Brownian motions. The proofs of many new results are presented in great detail. Original tools are developed for spatial point processes and stochastic integration with respect to local martingales in the plane. This second edition covers properties of random variables and time continuous local martingales with a discontinuous predictable compensator, with exponential inequalities and new inequalities for their maximum variable and their p-variations. A chapter on stochastic calculus presents the exponential sub-martingales developed for stationary processes and their properties. Another chapter devoted itself to the renewal theory of processes and to semi-Markovian processes, branching processes and shock processes. The Chapman-Kolmogorov equations for strong semi-Markovian processes provide equations for their hitting times in a functional setting which extends the exponential properties of the Markovian processes.

Book SynopsisThis is a book of elementary probability theory that includes a chapter on algorithmic randomness. It rigorously presents definitions and theorems in computation theory, and explains the meanings of the theorems by comparing them with mechanisms of the computer, which is very effective in the current computer age.Random number topics have not been treated by any books on probability theory, only some books on computation theory. However, the notion of random number is necessary for understanding the essential relation between probability and randomness. The field of probability has changed very much, thus this book will make and leave a big impact even to expert probabilists.Readers from applied sciences will benefit from this book because it presents a very proper foundation of the Monte Carlo method with practical solutions, keeping the technical level no higher than 1st year university calculus.

Book SynopsisRandom matrix theory has a long history, beginning in the first instance in multivariate statistics. It was used by Wigner to supply explanations for the important regularity features of the apparently random dispositions of the energy levels of heavy nuclei. The subject was further deeply developed under the important leadership of Dyson, Gaudin and Mehta, and other mathematical physicists. In the early 1990s, random matrix theory witnessed applications in string theory and deep connections with operator theory, and the integrable systems were established by Tracy and Widom. More recently, the subject has seen applications in such diverse areas as large dimensional data analysis and wireless communications. This volume contains chapters written by the leading participants in the field which will serve as a valuable introduction into this very exciting area of research.Table of ContentsThe Stieltjes Transform and Its Role in Eigenvalue Behavior of Large Dimensional Random Matrices (J W Silverstein); Beta Random Matrix Ensembles (P Forrester); Future of Statistics (Z Bai);  and Shannon Transforms: A Bridge between Random Matrices and Wireless Communications (A M Tulino); The Replica Method in Multiuser Communications (R R Muller).

Book SynopsisThe book is conceived as a text accompanying the traditional graduate courses on probability theory. An important feature of this enlarged version is the emphasis on algebraic-topological aspects leading to a wider and deeper understanding of basic theorems such as those on the structure of continuous convolution semigroups and the corresponding processes with independent increments. Fourier transformation — the method applied within the settings of Banach spaces, locally compact Abelian groups and commutative hypergroups — is given an in-depth discussion. This powerful analytic tool along with the relevant facts of harmonic analysis make it possible to study certain properties of stochastic processes in dependence of the algebraic-topological structure of their state spaces. In extension of the first edition, the new edition contains chapters on the probability theory of generalized convolution structures such as polynomial and Sturm-Liouville hypergroups, and on the central limit problem for groups such as tori, p-adic groups and solenoids.Table of ContentsProbability Measures on Metric Spaces; The Fourier Transform in a Banach Space; The Structure of Infinitely Divisible Probability Measures; Harmonic Analysis of Convolution Semigroups; Negative Definite Functions and Convolution Semigroups; Probabilistic Properties of Convolution Semigroups; Hypergroups in Probability Theory; Limit Theorems on Locally Compact Abelian Groups.

Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive account of stochastic filtering as a modeling tool in finance and economics. It aims to present this very important tool with a view to making it more popular among researchers in the disciplines of finance and economics. It is not intended to give a complete mathematical treatment of different stochastic filtering approaches, but rather to describe them in simple terms and illustrate their application with real historical data for problems normally encountered in these disciplines. Beyond laying out the steps to be implemented, the steps are demonstrated in the context of different market segments. Although no prior knowledge in this area is required, the reader is expected to have knowledge of probability theory as well as a general mathematical aptitude. Its simple presentation of complex algorithms required to solve modeling problems in increasingly sophisticated financial markets makes this book particularly valuable as a reference for graduate students and researchers interested in the field. Furthermore, it analyses the model estimation results in the context of the market and contrasts these with contemporary research publications. It is also suitable for use as a text for graduate level courses on stochastic modeling.Table of ContentsIntroduction to the Background of the Stochastic Filtering Problems; Filtering the Forward Exchange Rate Risk Premium; Inferring Unit Price of Risk in the Equity Market; Components of Inflation Uncertainty; Estimating Non-Markovian Interest Rate Model from Bond Prices; Filtering Application in Interest Rate Futures Prices; Multifactor Model of Time Series Dynamics of Credit Spread for Different Rating Classes; Short-Term and Long-Term Dynamics of Credit Default Swaps; Implied Volatility in Options on Credit Default Swaps; Non-Linear Filtering in Stochastic Variance Model for Interest Rates; Filtering Problems with Jumps.
