Book SynopsisNo matter what you teach, there is a 100 Ideas title for you!The 100 Ideas series offers teachers practical, easy-to-implement strategies and activities for the classroom. Each author is an expert in their field and is passionate about sharing best practice with their peers. Each title includes at least ten additional extra-creative Bonus Ideas that won''t fail to inspire and engage all learners.Questioning is key to effective teaching and learning, yet practical questioning strategies that are immediately useable in the classroom can be hard to come by. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Questioning presents practical strategies, games and activities not only to help teachers improve their own questioning in the classroom, but also to allow pupils to develop an understanding of how they too can ask effective questions to develop their learning.Using philosophical approaches including ownership, authenticity, balance and Socratic principles,Trade ReviewPeter Worley offers us a supercharged insight into questioning strategies and mindsets. Teachers will appreciate this crisp distillation of his most influential and practical ideas. This book is a crash course in becoming a more deliberative and deft facilitator of enquiry. -- Michelle Sowey, Director, The Philosophy Club, AustraliaIf you were to merge the training of an academic philosopher with the passion of our most inspirational teachers, then you'd create Peter Worley. This, his latest creation, is quite simply a beauty of a book: one that will guide and inspire you, and lead to ever more engaging, thought-provoking experiences for your learners. -- James Nottingham, teacher, author, and creator of The Learning PitThe invention – for that is what it is – of the concept of open questioning mindset (OQM) is a remarkable contribution, not just to the pedagogy of philosophical inquiry with children but to good pedagogy in any context. In an unassuming, but extremely elegant, way, Peter Worley has matched the much more famous pedagogical contribution, ‘growth mindset’, of Carol Dweck. Indeed, it could be argued that a teacher who models and encourages OQM contributes more directly to a child’s intellectual growth than one who models and encourages growth mindset. At any rate, a child might be more likely to become a fully self-directed learner through developing an OQM of her own, than merely developing a growth mindset. For it could be through – and only through – the practice of OQM that one might develop the capacity, in the metaphor of Plutarch, to ‘light the fire of learning’ in and for oneself. -- Roger Sutcliffe, Founding Member of SAPEREI would like to become a really good questioner and develop a questioning classroom. So, how can I learn to ask just the right question? What strategies can I use? Look no further than Peter Worley's new book on Questioning. Based on a wealth of experience, this introduction to questions and questioning is a cornucopia of ideas for the busy primary teacher, with the bonus of teaching tips and further suggestions that you can return to time and again. My advice to primary school teachers: get hold of this book and have it at your fingertips as you plan your lessons and work with your class. -- Dr Philip Cam, Adjunct Associate Professor, University of New South Wales, and author of '20 Thinking Tools'A great book [...] Questioning forms a huge part of my teacher training across the UK. [There is] tons of stuff I'm going to use in here for my own research and my own teacher training. -- Ross Morrison McGill, @TeacherToolkitThis short text would be of value to any member of staff who is interested in developing a deeper understanding of the ways that questioning can activate children’s thinking and imagination. -- Mary Mountstephen * SEN Magazine *

Book SynopsisA highly accessible and easily adaptable conceptual framework that helps educational leaders plan, leverage, and sustain change as they create more equitable schools. In Navigating Social Justice, Martin Scanlan introduces a comprehensive social justice schema that melds organizational learning with leading for equity. Scanlan distills wisdom gleaned from the experiences of a variety of educational professionals as well as from his own more than three decades of work in equity-focused partnership with elementary schools.Scanlan’s schema brings together five dimensions—inclusivity, communities of practice, critical formation, social ecosystems, and practical wisdom—that work together holistically to eradicate inequitable practices and policies and promote robust teaching and inclusive learning. For each dimension, the book features real-life vignettes that focus the conversation, exercises that encourage reflection, and suggested opportunities for the application of its central ideas. Each chapter also gives access to online tools, extending its utility. The practical guidance offered in this book not only will enable educational institutions to best meet the needs of families and community members but will also help leaders cultivate the moral and intellectual judgment needed to address social justice issues in schools. This clarifying equity framework will be invaluable to established and aspiring school leaders, building administrators, district leaders, system administrators, and others in both the public and private education sectors as they engage in ongoing social justice work.Trade ReviewCreating more just schools is both aspirational and urgent—requiring a great deal of school leadership. Scanlan draws deeply on his wisdom about justice and inclusivity, his decades of experience both leading and supporting leaders, and his abundant knowledge of schools to build a rich schema for the work of leading for equity and justice. This book strikes a beautiful balance of giving us new ways of thinking about and seeing the work of leadership with concrete ways to dig into building and rebuilding our own expertise." —George Theoharis, professor, Teaching and Leadership Department, Syracuse University."Scanlan keenly discusses the challenges that advocates could face as they navigate the praxis of social justice in educational settings. This book comes to timely fruition as educators encounter resistance to their teaching critical subject matter. Book SynopsisFoundations of Mathematics outlines seven strands of practice which underpin successful mathematical development inchildren aged 3-7. Early years mathematics specialists, Carole and Judith, draw on their experience of working with early years practitioners, including consultants and advisers, across the UK and internationally. The book is completely up-to-date and embeds the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage throughout the book. The book brims with multi-sensory ideas that will trigger children's curiosity, measuring using sand mousse, hunting for buried treasure and building secret dens outdoors. There are: - activities that involve playing and exploring, - games to make learning active, and - experiences to develop creative and critical thinking. Alongside these practical experiences and activities are clear explanations of the reasoning behind the ideas with clear guidance on the role of the practitioner and 'Home Challenges' to promote the engagement of families. The authors provide straightforward advice to support the development of a mathematically-enriched learning environment and ideas to help children transfer learning into their own child-initiated play, to build a genuine and solid foundation for mathematics.Trade ReviewThis amazingly useful and informative book gives practical and easy-to-follow tips for use in the classroom. The accompanying photographs and suggested activities are excellent. -- Deborah Choueka * Early years practitioner *Maths has often been an area in which we have needed to develop further - this book did this, for example, shape cutting when sandwich making, taking photos of children's fingers counting (rather than objects). Lots of ideas to use throughout the rooms. Really visual, easy read for staff. -- Rachel Thomas * Manager, Portico Day Nurseries Ltd *An engaging and well structured book which has been pitched perfectly for an early years teacher. The visual nature of the different chapters allows practitioners to dip in and out. There is a plethora of varied activities permitting teachers to formulate plans, or simply give children different opportunities to play and explore. -- James Sharrod * Bright Horizons *Table of ContentsIntroduction \ 1. • A Greenhouse for the Mind

University of Chicago Press A Greenhouse for the Mind

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School has won worldwide recognition for its treatment of emotionally disturbed children. The school and its continuing work at the University of Chicago have been chronicled in Bruno Bettelheim's now classic books Love Is Not Enough (1950), Truants from Life (1955), The Empty Fortress (1967), and A Home for the Heart (1972). A Greenhouse for the Mind continues the story of the school, focusing on how its teachers and counselors create an educational environment in which children will want and be able to learn. Jacquelyn Seevak Sanders worked closely with Bettelheim for thirteen years as a counselor and assistant principal and since 1973 has been director of the Orthogenic School. She offers her interpretation of Bettelheim's vision of a healing world for children, as well as her own ideas and new perspectives from the last decade. In a warm and anecdotal style, Sanders relates the experiences and overarching theoretical principles that have shaped the school and its curriculum. She describes how the staff, schedules, and physical appearance of the school have been developed to create a stable and safe place to learn; how teachers confront their own emotional vulnerability; how the staff accepts the children themselves while disciplining unacceptable behavior; and how the attention of the inattentive can be gained. She chronicles the successes and setbacks of the staff in developing a curriculum that includes reading, science, and physical education, and she exemplifies the school's principles and practices through a story of an imaginary student's educational development. In addition to her experience at the Orthogenic School, Sanders has worked with teachers at all levels from nursery schools to universities, and in A Greenhouse for the Mind she passes on what she has learned about educating difficult childrenprinciples that have been helpful to both disturbed children in a unique setting and more typical children in ordinary settings. Her attention to the role of emotions in the learning process adds an often neglected dimension to traditional cognitive and instructional approaches.
