Book SynopsisShortlisted for the History Book Award in Scotland''s National Book Awards, 2023During the long 19th century, Scotland was home to an established body of skilled jewellers who were able to access a range of materials from the country's varied natural landscape: precious gold and silver; sparkling crystals and colourful stones; freshwater pearls, shells and parts of rare animals.Following these materials on their journey from hill and shore, across the jeweller's bench and on to the bodies of wearers, this book challenges the persistent notion that the forces of industrialisation led to the decline of craft. It instead reveals a vivid picture of skilled producers who were driving new and revived areas of hand skill, and who were key to fostering a focused cultural engagement with the natural world among both producers and consumers through the things they made. By placing producers and their skill in cultural context, the book reveals how examining the materiality of eveTrade ReviewThis extensively researched and beautifully illustrated book makes an important contribution to material culture studies. 3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this, the first monograph of Richard Filipowski, a major figure bridging the Bauhaus and American midcentury modernism finally gets his due. Richard Filipowski (1923-2008) was among the most gifted polymaths in the annals of American modernism. Whether as a painter, sculptor, or designer of furniture and jewelry, Filipowski developed a lush, abstract, and amazingly consistent visual language that marks him among the finest figures of midcentury art and design. As a student at the Institute of Design (formerly the New Bauhaus) in Chicago, he quickly became a protégé of founder László Moholy-Nagy, who featured several of Filipowski's works in his seminal text Vision in Motion (1947); Filipowski was the only student Moholy-Nagy called upon to join the faculty, where he taught alongside Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. Recruited by Gropius to develop a course in design fundamentals at Harvard, which remains a cornerstone of design pedagogy to this day, he would move to MIT where he taught for more than three decades, until his retirement in 1988. With a foreword by László Moholy-Nagy's daughter Hattula, Richard Filipowski: Art and Design Beyond the Bauhaus is the first monograph of this master, who over the course of his career created a unique body of work in diverse media that has largely, until recently, been held in private collections due to his relative lack of compulsion to seek media attention or worldly rewards. But now through the efforts of the Filipowski family and new attention by design scholars - several of whom contribute essays here on Filipowski's graphic and painted works, sculpture, furniture, and position in design history - the work is being revealed to a new generation of aficionados. Richard Filipowski is a rich document of a life and career that is poised to reenter the canon of modernism.Trade Review"Beautifully illustrated with images of "Filip's" paintings, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, drawings, and other objects, this new work does much in the way of recognizing and highlighting the importance of the artist's achievements and helping a new generation learn of his contributions. VERDICT Highly recommended..." - Library Journal “It should not take long for this mid-century artist and designer to take his place in the American modernist canon, and a new book will only hasten the process. Richard Filipowski: Art & Design Beyond the Bauhaus, a handsome volume edited by Marisa Bartolucci, tells Filipowski’s story through scholarly essays and hundreds of photographs of his work.” - Gregory Cerio, MODERN magazine "In this new book, editor Marisa Bartolucci provides a review of Mr. Filipowski's evolution as a person and artist, as told in essays penned by various designers and artists. Glorious photographs (many full-page photos) share space with the essays, showcasing Mr. Filipowski's creativity. It's a fascinating approach to learning about the man, known as 'Filip' among friends and colleagues, who not only created art but also taught and inspired students." - Antoinette Rahn, Antique Trader

This book is aimed at the beginner who wants to make some fashionable costume jewelry and learn how to use various tools and materials. Unusually it focuses mostly on working with wire, and the projects are sorted into chapters according to what type of wire they use. Learn how to work with memory wire, beading wire, chain and jump rings and if you fancy a break from wire there is also a chapter on using stretchy cord. I am all for something different and thought that this was a good way of grouping projects, all of which manage to look both contemporary and timeless. None are too daunting either, with bracelets predominating (eight out of twelve projects are for these) but there are also two necklaces and two rings. Each of the four chapters starts with a brief overview of the type of wire/cord being used together with some useful tips. The rest of the chapter contains three projects, each handsomely illustrated with several good-sized captioned photographs, a list of materials and a useful “what you learn” area so you know what you are going to be doing. There is also a list of the tools you need with handy photographs of them and an alternative idea showing how to make the project using different materials. Throughout the book there are also useful things like a list of birthstones for each month, wire gauges, how to tie various knots and a jargon buster so you can familiarize yourself with all the terms. Another nice touch is at the top of the first page of each project is a row of beads; these are all the beads used in that particular project. This is much more useful to a beginner than a mere list. I would recommend this as being a book that is genuinely useful to complete beginners rather than being aimed more at improvers like a lot of beginner books. * myshelf.com *Journal 122 This simple straightforward book by British Jewellery designer and tutor Carolyn Schulz is a good introduction for an absolute beginner to making bead jewellery and it gives swift results. The book is divided in gour main sections, each characterised by the methods and techniques of holding the beads together i.e. the memory wire, beading wire, strechy cord & the use of chain & jump rings. Each of these four sections has three projects within it. At the beginning of each section is an explaination of the properties of the materials used, useful tips on using it and pictures of the tools required to use the material. Following this general introduction, at the beginning if each project is a little section outlining the inspiration for the design, techniques which you will learn whilst executing it and the materials required. Good close-up photographs are used to support the written instructions with the occasional addition of diagrams. At the back of the book is a comprehensive 'jargon busting' glossary describing with words and pictures the frequently used components in both UK and US terms, something that i would have found useful when starting on this hobby over twenty years ago. A final chapter gives an outline, again in words and pictures, of the tools most commonly used in the techniques of the book. Overall, this is a good, simple, value for money introduction to some of the techniques where we can use those wonderful beads. * Bead Society of Great Britain *Those looking to learn how to make bead jewelry will find clear instruction here, mostly for making bracelets and necklaces. The jewelry is limited to bead stringing (other techniques, such as loom beading, single-needle bead weaving, or bead embroidery, are not included). Even within this one technique, though, there are a variety of pieces included in a number of styles. There are three projects for each of four types of jewelry construction: memory wire, beading wire, stretchy cord, and chain and jump rings. These four types are detailed individually, with advice for making that construction material easy to use and with specific tools that are especially suited. Each project includes a list of required supplies; step-by-step instructions for construction, with accompanying photos for each step; tips; and design inspiration for possible variations. As Schulz developed this book as a course instructor, a bulleted list of learning outcomes is also provided for each project. A photo guide to the tools used is included, as is a photo appendix detailing the types of materials and terms used. * Booklist Online *I'm not a beginner jewellery maker but I think that this would have been very helpful for me when I was starting out. It is literally a jewellery course in a book. I liked how the book shows you, step-by-step, how to achieve attractive pieces of jewellery such as the cha-cha and charm bracelets. There are nice clear pictures throughout. There are four sections each covering a different base – memory wire, beading wire, stretchy cord and chain/jump rings. Within each section, Carolyn shows you the tools that you will need and how to use them. She shares her tips and explains relevant techniques such as how to make a wrapped loop, how to tie a double surgeon's knot and how to use a bead design board. There are three tutorials in each section showing you how to make simple but effective bracelets, necklaces and rings. At the end of the book there is a 'jargon buster' section and one on tools, all with photos. I received this book as a gift and I'm pleased that I did. I think it would make the perfect present for someone who is interested in learning to make jewellery, or just a treat for yourself if you fancy giving it a go. * Jo Ives *This is the perfect book for a beginner. If you are looking for a beginner book for a new hobby I would recommend this. It will guide you through the basics of jewellery making and gives you suitable projects to build your skills. You start out with memory wire projects and then to stringing and a couple of basic chain maille projects. If you do have previous experience then this probably isn't for you but it is perfect for someone just starting out. Lots of clear step by step pictures to help you on your way. * Sarah Gage *A fab guide to beading with easy to follow instructions, clear pictures and helpful tips. Includes ideas for beaded bracelets, rings, earrings and necklaces. A great book for a beginner but also a useful guide for every jewellery maker to have. * Karen Salveta *So many new techniques to learn & master very easy to follow, advice given for all tools and requirements for each project, highly recommended if a beginner to beading. * Angie Noble *Looking through this book, it has plenty of good photographs showing the steps you need to make to create 12 pretty bracelets, rings or necklaces. It shows at the beginning of each chapter what equipment you need in regards to pliers, cutters & shears and explains about each of the type of wires or chains being used. It also gives a list of the materials required. Each design has photographs accompanying the steps, and for special loops or knots it has step by step pictures. * Samantha Stroud *Table of ContentsIntroduction MEMORY WIRE: Birthstone Bracelet Island Lagoon After Eight Cuff BEADING WIRE: Pretty in Pink Golden Satin Minted Noodle Bracelet STRETCHY CORD: Glitter Ball Ring Seashore Crystal Cha-Cha Ring Seashore Crystal Cha-Cha Bracelet CHAIN AND JUMP RINGS Sweeteart Charm Bracelet Chain Maille Bracelet Shaggy Loop Bracelet Jewellery Jargon Buster Tools Index

Book Synopsis"...Modern British Jewellery Designers 1960-1980: A Collector’s Guide, is an ode to an extraordinary period in British jewelry history."— Phyllis Schiller, Rapaport "This book, in my opinion, fills a significant gap in the literature providing a good starting point for anyone thinking of collecting jewellery from the 1960s and 1970s, and for anyone interested in jewellery from that era." —Elizabeth Passmore, Scottish Gemmological Association n the 1960s, British jewellery underwent a revolution. Natural, uncut stones exploded into vogue and a 1961 exhibition at the Goldsmith’s Hall kickstarted the nation’s new obsession with gold. The women who shopped at Quant’s Bazaar and Hulaniki’s Biba no longer just received jewellery as gifts. They placed their own orders, exploring Grima’s drizzled gold and Flockinger’s fused metallic experimentations; John Donald’s textured gold cubes and the House of Munsteiner’s curious new gem cuts. This was an era of innovation – captured here through insights into the work of 25 major jewellers and sumptuous pictures of their work. Book Synopsis"...it’s the colorful photographs (over 500!) of one-of-a-kind Hopi and Moroccan-inspired mosaic pieces featured in her memoir, out in October, that truly command attention, from ammonite fossils and ivory animal renderings to stunning lapis, coral, and turquoise designs." — Natural Diamonds North African-born Eveli Sabatie had a long-time fascination with Native American culture and history. As a young woman, she left her home in Paris in 1968 to move to San Francisco, hoping to learn more. A chance encounter with a Hopi traditionalist led to an invitation to Arizona, where she apprenticed with a master Native American jewellery-maker. For her, this was the beginning of a new world. Art can never be fully divided from the artist’s voice, nor the natural world. When Eveli encountered red jasper while roaming the Arizona mountains, she knew she had to incorporate her local geology into her work. Yet raw materials are just one of many ways in which the world around Eveli shapes her art. This book is a direct and personal exploration of Eveli’s work, following her arc of growth, challenges and internal workings. Eveli’s jewellery is entirely created by her, from gathering material to fabricating the body of the piece, doing the lapidary work and finally adding stone settings and finishings. She works in a rustic, ancient environment, often choosing to use rudimentary and home-made tools over commercial techniques. This book explores her creative process through five sections: THE JOURNEY, a biographical overview of her time at the Hopi reservation in Northern Arizona, where she apprenticed under Charles Loloma; CLOUDS AND RAIN, exploring the influence of the Hopi and the desert on her work; BEING HOME, which talks in greater detail about Eveli’s relationship with the environment; BEING HUMAN, a philosophical study of humanity through jewellery; and BRANCHING OUT, which features Eveli’s other artworks, which are sought after by collectors from around the world. This is a profound reflection on the earth, through the medium of jewellery.Trade Review"it’s the colorful photographs (over 500!) of one-of-a-kind Hopi and Moroccan-inspired mosaic pieces featured in her memoir, out in October, that truly command attention, from ammonite fossils and ivory animal renderings to stunning lapis, coral, and turquoise designs." - Natural DiamondsTable of ContentsTo Wear the Jewelry of Eveli iv Foreword viii Introduction xi Prologue xiii Jewelry & its Magic xiv THE JOURNEY 1 HOPI LAND 2 SANTA FE 31 TUCSON 55 CLOUDS & RAIN 79 HONORING CLOUDS & RAIN 81 THE SIGNIFICANCE 105 BEING HOME 121 EARTHSCAPES 123 CONNECTED TO COSMOS 147 MY BESTIARY 159 SEA NOSTALGIA 197 THE GARDENS 213 BEING HUMAN 235 WE HUMANS 237 ASSEMBLAGE 251 SOUND & MOVEMENT 273 THE MYTHICAL & THE MYSTICAL 281 BRANCHING OUT 303 IVORY CARVINGS 304 MIXED MEDIA 305 BRONZES 306 INSTALLATION 308 Epilogue 309 Index 310 Photography credits 317

Her creations are designed to surprise and delight – miniature cakes and jellies that look good enough to eat; rings and bracelets that glow in the dark; shimmering clouds with diamond raindrops; jewels that stare back at you, and plant pots billowing with vegetation. Her design handwriting is predicated on a bold sense of form and colour, allied with a playful, contradictory mindset. Her design philosophy is to make jewellery she herself wants to wear and in doing so, she trusts that her customers in turn will appreciate and value her personal aesthetic. Oxbow Books Personal Adornment and the Construction of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisObjects of adornment have been a subject of archaeological, historical, and ethnographic study for well over a century. Within archaeology, personal ornaments have traditionally been viewed as decorative embellishments associated with status and wealth, materializations of power relations and social strategies, or markers of underlying social categories such as those related to gender, class, and ethnic affiliation. Personal Adornment and the Construction of Identity seeks to understand these artefacts not as signals of steady, pre-existing cultural units and relations, but as important components in the active and contingent constitution of identities. Drawing on contemporary scholarship on materiality and relationality in archaeological and social theory, this book uses one genre of material culture - items of bodily adornment - to illustrate how humans and objects construct one another.Providing case studies spanning 10 countries, three continents, and more than 9,000 years of human history, the authors demonstrate the myriad and dynamic ways personal ornaments were intertwined with embodied practice and identity performativity, the creation and remaking of social memories, and relational collections of persons, materials, and practices in the past. The authors’ careful analyses of production methods and composition, curation/heirlooming and reworking, decorative attributes and iconography, position within assemblages, and depositional context illuminate the varied material and relational axes along which objects of adornment contained social value and meaning. When paired with the broad temporal and geographic scope collectively represented by these studies, we gain a deeper appreciation for the subtle but vital roles these items played in human lives.Trade ReviewHaving read this book, you will have a clear and up to date overview of the deep possibilities jewellery research has to offer: not just for archaeological pieces, but for any type of personal adornment. * Bedouin Silver *Table of Contents 1. Book SynopsisThe result of forty years of study, this book offers an overview of the most common find, after coins, on sites in Roman Britain – the brooch. Used basically to hold outer clothing together, it was always on view and was usually decorative. This significant work is based on the study of some 15,000 specimens. Following a discussion of manufacturing techniques, methods of study and the concept of dating, the book examines in detail the myriad style of brooches from the second century B.C., when the habit of wearing brooches really took off, to the early fifth century A.D. when newcomers brought their own types of brooch and imposed them on the rest of what was to become England. The final chapter is a synthesis of various strands mentioned in the body of the book and the social implications of the great change in brooch wearing which occurred in the third century.Originally published as a two-volume hardback – split into a text volume and a second volume featuring author-drawn illustrations of some 2,000 examples – this combined paperback edition of volume 1 and 2 of Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain ensures that this important contribution to the field remains accessible to a wider audience.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisThe German gem-engraver, medallist, and amateur scholar Lorenz Natter (1705-1763), was so impressed by the size and quality of the collections of ancient and later engraved gems which he found in Britain that he proposed the publication of an extraordinarily ambitious catalogue – Museum Britannicum – which would present engravings and descriptions of the most important pieces. He made considerable progress to this end, producing several hundred drawings, but in time he decided to abandon the near completed project in the light of the apparent lack of interest shown in Britain. Only one of the intended plates in its final form ever appeared, in a catalogue which he published separately for Lord Bessborough’s collection. On Natter’s death the single copy of his magnum opus vanished mysteriously, presumed lost forever. All hope of recovering Natter’s unpublished papers seemed vain, and their very existence had come to be doubted. Yet they were to be found more than two hundred years after his death, in Spring 1975, when the classical scholar and renowned expert in gems, Oleg Neverov, chanced upon them at the bottom of a pile of papers in the archives of the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Neverov and his colleague Julia Kagan carried out the initial research on the Hermitage manuscripts and produced the first published account of this archival treasure. The present volume builds upon their earlier work to produce the first comprehensive publication of Museum Britannicum, offering full discussion in English and presenting Natter’s drawings and comments alongside modern information on the gems that can be identified and located through fresh research. This book is the result of a ten-year collaboration between scholars on the Beazley Archive gems research programme at Oxford’s Classical Art Research Centre and the State Hermitage Museum. It fulfills Natter’s vision for the Museum Britannicum – albeit two and a half centuries late – to the benefit of art historians, cultural historians, curators, and gem-lovers of today.Table of ContentsPreface ; PART 1 ; I. Book Synopsis'There are few problems that are insurmountable. If something is broken more often than not it can be repaired. A can-do attitude is essential, or at least a willingness to have a go.' So writes award-winning silversmith and BBC television personality Brenton West in his introduction to this, his first book. Brimming with in-depth technical information on tools, techniques and metals, Brenton explains how to diagnose the problem, apply the repair, and make good almost any precious items. Aimed at anyone who wants to learn the skills necessary to fix, repair or improve household items – whether for sentimental reasons or to turn a profit – the book covers more than a dozen common case studies for you to follow. Ranging from simple to more complex repairs, Brenton tackles re-plating silver, correctly securing metal to glass, polishing, soldering, re-finishing and more on a variety of antique items including table lamps, inkwells, cocktail shakers and hand mirrors. The case studies are fully illustrated so you can see what's happening at each stage, while handy boxes expand on the specific example, giving Brenton's expert advice on how to apply the skills learned to your own particular repairs. After all, no two objects break in quite the same way: the book will teach you how to adapt. Dotted throughout are Brenton's own hard-won secret tips and techniques, so you can share and benefit from his experience. Brenton talks you through how different metals and materials can be properly identified and safely repaired. The book also includes information on hallmarking, allowing you to assess those second-hand finds accurately. Finally, an extensive tool directory and techniques section give no-nonsense and in-depth advice on the best tools for the job.Trade ReviewAbsolutely fascinating book. A must for anyone with a passion for fixing things. I have long been an avid viewer of the TV programme The Repair Shop so I was quite thrilled when I heard that the resident silversmith, Brenton West had written a book about his trade. The book is a fascinating insight into the silversmith’s trade and contains a wealth of information written in a very accessible format. This book is not just about silversmithing but is aimed at anyone who has an interest in fixing things. The book begins with an introduction to Brenton’s early years and how his passion blossomed for fixing things. The next section is a guide to various metals and their properties and melting points. Following on from this Brenton talks about what is a hallmark and how to identify them, which I found particularly interesting. I found the section on tools really interesting and useful as it not only provides a wealth of photos of the tools Brenton uses for his trade but also a description and the use of each tool. The next section of the book covers Core Skills, which leads nicely on from the last section and provides really good insights into the use of his tools, for example cutting with a piercing saw, soldering and repairing dents in items using hammers. In the final section Brenton talks about a number of projects that arrive at his workshop daily. For each project he lists the item, aim, difficulty of repair and the tools you will need to complete the repair. Each project comes with photos and descriptions of the various steps needed to complete the repair. This book has helped to rekindle a passion I had when I was younger for taking things to pieces to find out how they work and has brought back memories of my school days in metalworking lessons using the school forge to create wrought iron work and making sand moulds to pour molten metal into to create various items. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisLes représentations de Mars Ultor sur les pierres gravées is principally devoted to engraved stones representing the Mars Ultor type and aims to restore them to their rightful place. When Adolf Furtwängler, in his study of the Somzée collection, determined the Mars Ultor type from a statuette in the same collection, he chose to use only two artefacts for comparison: the engraved gem from the Marlborough collection and a sesterce of Antoninus Pius. Monumental sculpture and reliefs did not provide reliable anchors for the type. Even the famous statue from the Capitoline Museum did not find favour with him. Paradoxically, the studies that followed Furtwängler's focused on the ‘high arts’, intentionally leaving aside the intaglios and the glass pastes, which are the only contemporary examples of the original statue, now lost. Gems representing the Mars Ultor type were produced between the 1st and 4th centuries. They attest to the longevity and impact of the Augustan image in Roman iconography and allow us to follow the variations in meaning of the motif. Scattered around the world and without documented contexts, the 240-odd engraved stones gathered here prove – if it were still necessary to do so – that the great masterpieces of art history have had a much more important survival on these small objects than on the great monuments traditionally at the centre of iconographic studies. Comparison with statuettes and coins representing the Mars Ultor type also offers a historical and religious view of the cult of the god, promoted by Octavian after the Battle of Philippi.Table of ContentsRemerciements ; Avertissement ; Introduction ; I. Book SynopsisA remarkable private collection formed over the last thirty years is the focus of this richly illustrated book that introduces the reader to English silver spanning a century and a half from a little before the Tudor age (1485-1603) to the threshold of the Civil War (1642-51). This was a period when England changed out of all recognition. At the beginning it was still essentially a medieval country dominated by an autocratic king and a rich and powerful Church; by the end of the period the Church had lost virtually all of its power and, with the execution of Charles I in 1649, the monarchy itself was abolished. To a degree, this changing world is mirrored in the styles represented by the silver featuring in the collection. Besides setting the silver against its social and historical background the book examines the wide range of techniques used by silversmiths at the time to shape and adorn silver objects.Trade Review"With its accessible text, exemplary silver photography, elegant design and careful editing, this is a pleasure to read and should encourage a new generation of collectors to follow David Littles example." Tessa Murdoch, Art Newspaper; "'[A] fascinating new book that uses one man's collection to examine the social history of domestic silver from the Tudor and early Stuart eras." Roland Arkell, Antiques Trade Gazette; "The book is peppered with alluring historical illustrations that help readers understand the time period. In short, this captivating treatise is a connoisseur's delight." Book SynopsisThe Hillwood Museum's Russian silver collection is the largest and most comprehensive outside Russia. 'Russian Silver in America' surveys Russian silver production, its changing forms, styles, imagery and techniques over more than 250 years, drawing on the collections of both the Hillwood and other US museums. A beautifully illustrated book which provides a proper cultural, political and historical context in which to view this fascinating collection, it charts the history of Russian silver through the baroque styles of the reigns of Peter and Elizabeth, the move to Rococo and Neoclassicism under Catherine and Paul, revivalist styles under Alexander I and Nicholas I, 19th-century styles up to Faberge and modernist production. Running throughout is the story of how and why so much Russian silver found its way into American collections - much of it sold by the Soviet government in the 1920s and 30s, as having largely been held in church treasuries and private collections, it was considered to be of no artistic value. A dazzling visual history of Russian silver and a vital record of 18th- and 19th-century silver production in Russia, almost none of which remains in the country today. Features over 160 pieces from the Hillwood Museum and other US collections including objects made for the imperial family and growing merchant class.Table of ContentsForeword by Frederick J. Book SynopsisA masterpiece of medieval Arab metalwork revealed, shedding light on courtly life in northern Iraq under the Mongol governorship. Accompanying a major scholarly exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery, this book explores one of the most beautiful and enigmatic objects in The Courtauld’s collection: the so-called ‘Courtauld wallet’, a brass container richly inlaid with gold and silver, imitating a lady’s textile or leather bag, and probably made in Mosul in northern Iraq around 1300. No other object of this kind is known. Decorated all round with courtly figures and on the top with an elaborate banqueting scene featuring an enthroned couple, it has long been recognised as a masterpiece of Arab metalwork. Yet, despite the superb quality of its design and craftsmanship and its status as a unique object, this exceptional metalwork bag has never been properly published. Thus it remains little known outside a small circle of specialists, and little understood even within that circle. Encompassing a variety of multidisciplinary essays by distinguished historians and art historians– on subjects ranging from music at the Mongol court, Mosul under Mongol governorship and Mongol marriage customs to the role of women under the Ilkhanids–this publication aims to explore the origins, function and iconography of this splendid luxury object as well as the cultural context in which it was made and used. It will bring together other images of enthroned Mongols with female consorts, as well as scenes of hunters, revellers and musicians in a variety of media, including illustrated manuscripts, ceramics, textile, and metalwork. By presenting the bag alongside carefully selected contemporary material, it will provide an insight into courtly life under the Mongols in the newly conquered areas of their empire, and will also provide an unrivalled opportunity to investigate the inlaid brass tradition in Mosul after the Mongol Conquest. Objects made before and after this seismic event will be reproduced side by side to demonstrate how the Mosul metalworkers adapted their work for their new patrons.

Book SynopsisA stunning new volume which presents 120 pieces by 50 leading jewellery designers from the 1960s and '70s, including works by John Donald, Arthur King, Andrew Grima and Gilbert Albert. Simply Brilliant presents 120 pieces by 50 leading makers of jewellery in the 1960s and '70s, drawn from the Klosterman collection in Cincinnati. Most, if not all, of the individual makers of this era thought of themselves as artists first, jewellers second, and this magnificent new volume is full of stunning one of a kind pieces which reflect the inventive, ground-breaking attitudes of the era. The book explores the 1961 Goldsmiths Hall exhibition in London and its influence on contemporary jewellery designers such as John Donald, Arthur King, Andrew Grima and Gilbert Albert. The 1961 exhibition brought a new direction in jewellery design to the fore, influencing others - including the major jewellery houses such as Cartier, Bulgari, Chopard and Van Cleef and Arpels - paving the way for an international movement in fashion and design. These jewellery designers created unique pieces, often for individual clients, using non-traditional materials and unusual forms. AUTHOR: Cynthia Amneus is chief curator and curator of Fashion Arts and Textiles at Cincinnati Art Museum. 207 colour illustrationsTrade Review“This stunning book succeeds in its aim to bring focus to hitherto unknown, or at least under-acknowledged, artist-jewellers, and presents beautifully the cutting-edge jewellery designs typical of the 1960s and 1970s.”—Michelle Clark, The Australian Gemmologist. "A celebration of around 200 one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery from the collection of Kimberly Klosterman." "Beautifully illustrated."—The Jeweller, National Association of Jewellers
