  • Hear Our Prayer: Gospel-Based Intercessions for Sundays and Holy Days

Canterbury Press Norwich Hear Our Prayer: Gospel-Based Intercessions for Sundays and Holy Days

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis sequel to the best-selling Leading Intercessions offers a completely new set of intercessory prayers for Sundays and special occasions, following the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary. Rather than draw on all the Bible passages for the day, this second collection draws entirely on the Gospel readings for the day's Principle Service. Using images and phrases from the life of Jesus Christ, it connects the comfort and guidance of his life and teachings to our prayers for the church and the world today. Elegantly written, the prayers are complete in themselves yet also allow for local and topical concerns to be inserted.Trade Review"This second neat little book of intercessions from Raymond Chapman for each of the lectionary years A, B and C is a useful addition to the bookshelf of anyone who regularly leads the prayers in public worship and doesn't always have time to create beautifully crafted original prayers of their own. The style is elegant and concise, and each set of prayers draws on the gospel for the corresponding Sunday, Principal Feast or Holy Day. For such a slim little book, there is a tremendous amount inside." * Praxis News of Worship *

  • Creative Ideas for Pastoral Liturgy

Canterbury Press Norwich Creative Ideas for Pastoral Liturgy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisArising out of many year's experience of helping to lead local church worship and counselling work in a children's hospice, this is the first of three new volumes that focuses on the occasions when many non-churchgoers visit a church: for christenings, weddings, funerals, and memorials. These rites of passage present key opportunities for occasional visitors to encounter the Christian faith. If they are imaginatively handled a lifelong interest can be aroused. If they are insensitively done, people can be put off for life. This practical resource offers prayers, forms of words and many tried and tested ideas for creating rituals that give support at a time of great need following a death. It will enable the creation of rites (based on the authorized liturgical texts) that are beautiful, memorable and meaningful. Particular help is given for that most difficult of pastoral challenges, the death of a child and the care of the bereaved family.Trade Review'This is a useful, sensitive, creative resource and is a welcome addition to the existing available material. It compliments the more traditional formats of church liturgy and brings a personal flexible and creative touch. ' * The Miscarriage Association *'This is a wide-ranging book for all whose task it is to preside at funerals, especially for those of us who do this frequently. Many ideas in this book are fresh and new. Engaging with these ideas will help to renew our pastoral approach to the the taking of funerals and prevent a sense of staleness from creeping in. This is a book in the best tradition of creating and adapting liturgy for pastoral needs and circumstances'. * Fairacres Chronicle *

  • The Book of Common Prayer as Proposed in 1928:

Canterbury Press Norwich The Book of Common Prayer as Proposed in 1928:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the late 1920s, the Church of England was stunned when its first new prayer book since 1662 - a book that had received overwhelming support from bishops, clergy and laity alike - was rejected by the House of Commons. It was almost another sixty years before a new prayer book was attempted and although many of its rites went on to appear in the 1984 Alternative Services Book (and continue today in Common Worship), to many Anglican minds, the 1928 Prayer Book is unsurpassed and it continues in demand, especially among Anglo-Catholics. This facsimile edition will make available to students of liturgy and worship one of the finest written treasures of the Church of England. Although unauthorized for use, this is a resource that many clergy will be glad to have. This is not to be confused with the 1928 US Book of Common Prayer - the authorized prayer book of the Episcopal Church in America for over 50 years.

Book Synopsis God writes a lyric through our life. Through the means of praise and worship we can express our spiritual yearnings in ways that we would find difficult in everyday words or conversation.Yet lyrics to hymns and songs become dry on our tongues. What once seemed to express our joy with incandescence, now glows feebly - a token remembrance of our heart's desire. We move on to new songs, only for the pattern to repeat itself. The problem is not the song, the problem is OUR song.Using the verses from Luther's great hymn 'A Mighty Fortress is our God', written from his meditations on psalm 46, T M Moore helps us recapture our song, written by God's hand in our life. We can rekindle the flames of our spiritual lives and be set upon a firmer footing to face the future - bloodied, unbowed, undismayed. At trying times Luther would turn to his closest friend and say 'Come Philip, let us sing the 46th.' May your life be turned by singing in harmony with one who loves you closer than a brother.

  • Papal Ceremonial at Rome in the Twelfth Century

Henry Bradshaw Society Papal Ceremonial at Rome in the Twelfth Century

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAn examination of the papal adventus ceremony, deriving from the ritual reception performed for the ruler in antiquity, and the changes it underwent during the century. This book examines the character and significance of the adventus ceremonies which were accorded to medieval popes and for which there is much evidence in the twelfth-century sources. The papal adventus, hitherto unstudied in anylanguage, retained the framework and much of the familiar symbolism of the ritual reception performed for the ruler in antiquity. During the twelfth century it was performed for popes with unprecedented frequency, providing, in particular, a vital part of the papal accession ritual. On such occasions adventus represented a demonstration of consent to rule, a sense that was expressed through traditional idioms evoking the triumph of the ruler. But the meaning of the ritual altered towards the end of the century as a result of the breakdown of relations between the papacy and the Romans, and the adventus provided an opportunity for the Romans to express their own agenda wherein consent meant the right of acceptance or veto by the people. Dr SUSAN TWYMAN teaches in the Faculty of Continuing Education, Birkbeck College, London University.

Jewish Lights Publishing The Art of Public Prayer: Not for Clergy Only

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAll too often, those who attend church or synagogue find themselves bored or baffled by the service. Their predominant thought is how slowly the time ticks by-and that the service never seems to end. Written for laypeople and clergy of any denomination, The Art of Public Prayer examines how and why religious ritual works-and why it often doesn't work. The Art of Public Prayer uses psychology, social science, theology and common sense to explain the key roles played by ritual, symbolism, liturgy and song in services. Each chapter features "conversation points" designed to get you and your faith community thinking and talking about your own worship patterns-where they succeed, and where they need improvement. The Art of Public Prayer can help you and your fellow congregants revitalize your worship service by allowing you to organize and direct your own worship, making it a meaningful and fulfilling part of your life.Trade Review"Offers great wisdom about the way religious rituals can help people make sense of their lives…. This book is for all Jews and Christians who hope for religious ritual that speaks to deep human hungers and helps people discover God's presence in their daily experience." —Rev. Ruth Duck, associate professor of worship art, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary "Lawrence Hoffman shows us how, by understanding the dynamic between a person and God and among people gathered for prayer, the length of our communal reach can exceed the sum of our individual efforts. In doing so, he helps us discover our collective heart." —Rabbi Jack Moline, Agudas Achim Congregation, Alexandria, Virginia "An indispensable resource as we envision effective modes of prayer for the 21stcentury synagogue." —Dr. Ron Wolfson, codeveloper, Synagogue 3000; author, The Art of Jewish Living series (Jewish Lights Publishing) "A captivating work solidly grounded and eminently readable in which Rabbi Hoffman draws on a variety of cultural and religious analogues to help us understand the renewed liturgy and what makes it work. Book Synopsis'Articles of Faith' is a play designed to promote understanding of the controversial subject of the blessing of same-sex unions. The play is based on a series of interviews conducted by the author in a Pacific Northwest community where the issue of formal condoning and blessing of same-sex unions divided and eventually split an Anglican parish. "Intended to "spark a dialogue" regarding the Anglican Church's internal battlesover same-sex marriage, the play examines the case of a Port Alberni, BC parish that voted to "disaffiliate" from the church in 1996 in protest against its perceived openness toward blessing same-sex relationships. ...The result, if rarely dramatic or compelling, is a work that succinctly and earnestly voices a representative range of opinion on the issue." - Canadian Literature

Scottish Text Society The Gude and Godlie Ballatis

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNew edition of a collection of songs and ballads from sixteenth-century Scotland, shedding important new light on the English and Scottish Reformation. The Gude and Godlie Ballatis is a collection of religious lyrics from the early years of the Scottish Reformation. It was a highly popular, if controversial, volume, was often reprinted, and is considered one of the most important literary works of vernacular Scots from the period. It contains translations of a number of Psalms, but most of the contents consist of shorter songs and ballads, many of which have been adapted from a secular to a spiritual use. The previous edition of the collection dates from 1897. The new edition not only revises the information given there, but presents the text of the earliest print (1565), which was unknown to the previous editor. The textual development of the collection through the various printings is studied, and is related to the changing historical, political, literary, cultural and theological contexts of Reformation Scotland. The editor addresses questions of authorship, transmission, source material, and the use and significance of these lyrics. Drawing on recent work in book history and English psalmody, as well as a deep knowledge of Older Scots lyric, he demonstrates the close connections between the collection and Continental hymnody, as well as interactions with English and Scots lyric, both sacred and profane. York Medieval Press Saints' Legends in Medieval Sarum Breviaries:

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisComprehensive catalogue of the hagiographical lessons in Sarum breviaries, with key studies of the most crucial elements. Sarum Use was the most widely used form of the liturgy in late medieval England, but its service books were much less standardized than their modern counterparts. The lack of uniformity is particularly marked in Sarum breviaries' lessons on saints, which can vary enormously from copy to copy. This book is the first comprehensive examination of those lessons and the manuscripts that preserve them. It provides a catalogue of over 80 manuscripts and 12 early printed versions, giving a brief description of each one, sometimes correcting previous views of its date and provenance, and identifying each copy's divergences from the standard Sarum roster of saints. The book also identifies the textual families into which the manuscripts fall and the extent of their divergence from the lessons in both the early printed versions and the inadequate nineteenth-century edition on which modern scholars have previously depended. The author's findings offer an introduction to the unexpectedly rich variety of hagiographical lessons that survive, identify some of the sources behind them, and shed new light on the ways in which the Sarum breviary developed and was disseminated in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.Table of ContentsIntroduction Part One. • Other Communions of Jesus

Collective Ink Other Communions of Jesus

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book John Henson suggests that by basing our practice and understanding of "communion" on the event of the Last Supper we have ignored those other occasions when Jesus ate and drank with the people of his day, with the result that we have reversed the intentions of Jesus. Instead of the meal being an invitation to inclusion, the churches have used it as a means of exclusion; instead of the "beanfeast of the Kingdom" it has become a gathering around the cenotaph. In these studies Christians are challenged to return to the mind of Jesus by allowing all the evidence of the gospels to be put into the balance. Although the author's prime purpose is devotional, there are revolutionary implications. Should the churches take the contents of this book seriously, communion will never be the same again.

Book SynopsisReligions contribute to wars, but they can also contribute to peace. They are its necessary foundation. Here eight different religions join together in peace to pray for peace. Under the auspices of the interfaith organization, The Week of Prayer for World Peace, they bring home vividly the love that is God and the horror that is war. It is not only inner peace - tranquility of soul and mind - which is being sought here, but an end to agony and bloodshed, physical and psychological torture, abuse of every kind taking place in the world of men, women and children. This is a very practical prayer book, earthed in the pain of being human. Peace itself comes in many different forms, and the book is arranged to be flexible and comprehensive, ideal for individual or group use. It consists of seven weeks of prayer, each of which contains eight "days" of prayers and intercessions on particular themes connected with the overall theme of "Peace on earth and goodwill towards mankind".

Book SynopsisThe "Celtic Wheel of the Year" offers an original and inspiring selection of prayers for individual use. Divided into monthly sections, it incorporates Celtic Christian and Celtic Pagan traditions in a single pattern of prayer. Prayers combine the Christian seasons with the seasons of the Solstices and Equinoxes. But they also reach beyond both traditions, dancing together and finding a new way of worshipping; one that we can enjoy in private spirituality or as a partaker of established religion.Trade ReviewTess Ward has written a spiritual handbook full of wisdom, grace and creativity. It dips into the deep wells of Celtic tradition and beyond to gather the clear water of life. This is a book of prayer to be treasured. Mike Riddell, author of The Sacred Journey and Godzone Tess Ward writes like a mystic. Deeply immersed in nature, embedded in folklore, poetic in word and vivid in the images evoked, both the introductory material for each month and the accompanying prayers awaken deep sentiment and the soulful realisation that we are always within the divine embrace in which we live and move and have our being. A gem for all seasons! Diarmuid O'Murchu MSC In an age of global warming and increasing ecological vulnerability, the only viable spiritualities are those which re-connect us to the earth and deepen our sense of connection with the divine spirit that enlivens it. Tess Ward's book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking such a spirituality.
