Messenger Publications The Deep End: A Journey with the Sunday Gospels

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Deep End invites readers to come on a journey through the story of Luke’s Gospel and to follow Jesus as he makes his way to Jerusalem. Through a series of reflections on the Sunday Gospels of Year C, it offers a fresh perspective for anyone who wants to explore how the Gospels are relevant for today. Jane and Tríona believe the Word is alive and active (Heb 4:12) and through it we can reflect on the complexities of our lives. Today, in a world threatened by ecological break-down, inequality and division, the message of Jesus as presented by Luke has much to say to us. Jesus is someone who has come to deeply challenge people’s expectations and bring about God’s dream for the world, where the last will be first. We are invited to hear God’s voice within and find our way as followers of Jesus of Nazareth, cultivating inclusiveness, compassion and a love which can turn the world upside down. The book includes tips for prayer and meditation to nourish ourselves along the way, as well as practical suggestions for building communities of welcome and love. There is a particular focus on our call to care for God’s creation. There will be many surprises and challenges as we travel through the year; Luke’s Gospel offers a radical vision which inspires and gives hope and invites us to continue the narrative. Trade Review‘...intelligent, thought-provoking...I recommend this book to families and parishes, to the gentle seeker and the well-read.’ Reality -- Noirín Lynch * Reality magazine *"Inviting, accessible and inspiring, this new book is a wonderful invitation to enter into the Gospel of Luke, with two experienced and lively guides. Messenger Publications Occasional Prayers for the School Year

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe book is intended for busy teachers, chaplains or anyone who often reaches for a prayer or service, but finds themselves grabbing material from many different sources. The author has worked a Jesuit school for over 20 years, where school gatherings are common and are always prefaced with prayer. She has regularly searched for and written different prayers to suit moments in the school year, to suit a moment in time. Sometimes she had time to prepare and other times, she found herself running along corridors to pull something from her files or turning to the internet while the bell was ringing! She often wished she had a book under her arm that she could trust would always have something to suit. So she put her prayers together as a "go to" for people who lead prayer, who provide calm and stillness for others but may have felt frantic in ‘finding the right piece.’ She has also included a couple of poems from young people as an example of how they continue to inspire her. • Our Wounded God: Beyond, Beside and Within Us

Messenger Publications Our Wounded God: Beyond, Beside and Within Us

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Stations of the Cross etch a story of pain and humiliation in the life of Jesus. There are parallels closer to home as well as across our world, be it in Ukraine, Nicaragua, Iraq or Pakistan that are ‘twinned’ with Gethsemane and Golgotha. This book invites us on a journey as we discern and dialogue for new horizons of gospel service as a church on a Synod path. We are part of a body that is greater than our own individual bodies. We have hearts and souls. Through Baptism, the Eucharist, the shared commitment of our resources, the living out of radical forgiveness, the inclusive service of compassion to all and the willingness to make sacrifices with the lowest, the least and the lost will lead us to be called the ‘body of Christ.’ This book invites you to consider, if as a church, we are part of the un-noticed, the un-recognised and the forgotten that makes us feel their pain and humiliation. This book helps us to discover the paschal (‘pass over’) significance of the cross as a response to the suffering that sears many lives today. Here we can embody the words of Jesus: ‘This is my body given for you.’ Through this proclamation, we can call ourselves the Church. This book sees Jesus as the guardian of the wounded and the tortured. It invites us, like Simon of Cyrene and Veronica to embrace and caress the open wounds that scar innocent lives. The Stations of the Cross lead us, like the Centurion who pierces the side of Christ, to recognise divinity at the heart of humanity.Trade Review‘a rich, if eclectic, source of rare sensitivity, astute insight and hope-filled companionship...’ * The Pastoral Review *

  • Journeying to the Light: Daily Readings through

Messenger Publications Journeying to the Light: Daily Readings through

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisJourneying to the Light is intended to be read daily through the period from Advent Sunday to the Epiphany. It is largely based upon one of the Eucharistic readings each day. There are variations, and it can be adapted to be used whatever the length of Advent, and for individual or group use. The author weaves contemporary trends with biblical themes and with events of his own life. It has at its heart the Incarnation; anticipated by the prophets; joyfully experienced through the words of Luke, and proclaimed to the nations through the visit of the Magi, as recorded by Matthew. The author is an Anglican priest, but as this book is based upon the the Revised Common Lectionary, it is ecumenical in its reach, as many of the readings coincide with those appointed for both the daily Mass in Roman Catholic Churches and in Anglican Churches. Equally, the daily reflections, may be of use to all individuals who are seeking to establish a regular period of contemplation and space through Advent and Christmas, which is traditionally full of distraction and busyness. Bishop Brendan Leahy is joined by Archbishop John McDowell of the Church of Ireland in commending the book for our use, and two Church of England bishops add their voices to suggest that a deepening of our reflection, throughout these days of joyous hope, helps us to seek further the source of the light that was coming to humanity, that is Jesus, son of Mary, redeemer of the world. A Church-goer, a seeker after truth or, quite possibly in these tumultuous days, a Christian soul whose path has become darkened or distracted in recent years will find some thing in these pages to encourage them beyond written texts of any kind to set their eyes towards the light and their heart to the divine.Trade Review‘a light touch, balancing profound commentary with personal anecdote’ * Search Journal *‘Filled with striking insights based on experience, this is a book to buy, read and, in time, reread.’ * The Irish Catholic *‘What a genuinely lovely thing this is. [Mann’s] writing reflects both the heart of a priest and the pen of a poet, [with] thoughtful, eloquent, and generative reflections on Scripture. There are many lovely touches, including gentle and wise prayers to use before and after engaging with the readings.’ * Church of Ireland Gazette *

Book SynopsisJesus unflinchingly walked the road that he had chosen, knowing its cost. In our lives we find ourselves on roads not always of our choosing, often puzzling, sometimes full of light when faith seems easy, sometimes darkened and troubled. As we journey through the events of Holy Week we find Jesus sharing that human perplexity and struggle, always fully engaged, determined to accompany us on the journey that lies ahead, giving us confidence to pray and act for the needs of those close to us and for the needs of the world. Janet Killeen uses a variety of perspectives to get close to the events of Holy Week. Some of the events are far from holy: treacherous, hostile and increasingly isolating for the Man at their heart, who comes to us in his isolation, in confrontation and rejection, in the sorrow and anguish he experienced, so that we might never be alone. Janet Killeen studied English and American literature, and taught in a London comprehensive school for over thirty-five years. She has published poems, short stories and two novels, and is a regular contributor to Wild Goose books.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA newly identified medieval play for the Feast of Fools, with a new English translation and musical edition ready for performance. Scholars and non-scholars alike have long been fascinated by the medieval "Feast of Fools", the annual celebration on or around the New Year that came to be known for its inversion of established hierarchies, its boisterousness, and its scurrilous, even sacrilegious, clerical behaviour. However, we now know that many of the most obscene and subversive practices associated with the feast were, in fact, the misunderstandings, exaggerations, or even fabrications of overzealous ecclesiastical reformers. Our most reliable information about the Feast comes from the scant extant liturgical items that clerical communities actually used during their celebrations. This book shows that the twelfth-century Ordo Joseph from Laon, in France - a play long-known to scholars, telling the story of Joseph the patriarch and his brothers -- is in fact a drama for the Feast of Fools, long hidden in plain sight, intended for performance at Epiphany. It situates the play within the context of the cathedral community's history of biblical exegesis under its school-master Anselm of Laon, proposing "performative gloss" as an important new tool for understanding how medieval liturgical dramas generated meaning. It Includes a new Latin edition of the text, accompanied by an English translation, as well as a musical reconstruction that harnesses the music of Laon's liturgy and finally makes possible a performance of this spectacular, newly identified Feast of Fools drama.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Notes on the Text List of Abbreviations Introduction: A New Play for the Feast of Fools Part I: Study 1: The Ordo Joseph in Context 2: The Scriptures and the Staging 3: The Joseph Story as Model and Reversal 4: Anti-Jewish Sentiment and the Passion Part II: Text, Music, and Commentary Text and Translation The Music of the Ordo Joseph Notes and Commentary Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisEnglish translation of a variety of texts from women's books of hours, with introduction, notes, and an interpretive essay. The book of hours is said to have been the most popular book owned by the laity in the later middle ages. Women were often patrons or owners of such books, which were usually illustrated: indeed, the earliest surviving exemplar made in England was designed and illustrated by William de Brailes in Oxford in the mid-thirteenth century, for an unknown young lady whom he portrayed in the book several times. This volume brings together a selection of texts taken from books of hours known to have been owned by women. While some will be familiar from bibles or prayer-books, others have to be sought in specialist publications, often embedded in other material, and a few have not until now been available at all in modern editions or translations. • Ordo Romanus Primus: Text and Translation with Introduction and Notes

Joint Liturgical Studies Ordo Romanus Primus: Text and Translation with Introduction and Notes

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOrdo Romanus Primus (ORP) is a descriptive account in Latin of the papal mass at Easter in Santa Maria Maggiore, probably at some time in the seventh or eighth century. It is the first such account, and differs from earlier evidence of the Roman rite by its relative disregard for the spoken text, which is usually only cited in ORP as providing cues for the ceremonial action. The ‘action’, however, is detailed, is often surprising, and gives a three-dimensional approach to a rite which, in its textual form, only tells the half of what was happening. The whole action is set on a large canvas, so that the account starts with the procession of the papal household from the Lateran. As Alan Griffiths put it ‘the nature of ORP is to be a key to ritual business, not to text’, and he adds ‘one might describe it as an “events management” document.’ There has been no full edition of the text in English since that of Atchley in 1905, and his translation has today a highly dated look to it. Alan Griffiths has drawn upon the Latin text collated by Michel Andrieu in his French edition of the ordines Romani in 1948, and has provided his own fresh and contemporary translation of it into English, running in parallel columns with the Latin. It makes a valuable addition to the series of Joint Liturgical Studies which have made such a large range of patristic liturgical materials available to students who work largely in English.

Wild Goose Publications Known Unknowns: 100 contemporary texts to common

Book SynopsisSinging a new song is not an optional extra, but a faithful response to a divine command. This command is the opening phrase of Psalms 96 and 98. And, St John the Divine says, this is what the saints in heaven are doing all the time. But, on earth, things are not so easy. Sometimes it's because the latest new song in the old hymnbook is two centuries old. Or the congregation has been told by some sadist that it doesn't sing well'. Or sometimes the organist can only play what s/he hears on the radio. Or the guitarist can do anything, as long as it's only three major chords. However, even in such dire straits, the divine command has to be obeyed. So what if we kept familiar tunes hymn tunes or folk tunes and set words to them in 21st-century idioms? What if we gave some ancient psalms a makeover, replaced threadbare wedding and funeral songs or dealt with the things that people actually talk about when they're not in church? And what if most of the suggested tunes were so well known that even if musicians took the huff people could still sing the verses on their own? What if you looked under the covers of this book and began to upset the quiet of the place in which you are presently standing by beginning to hum? This book amounts to a modest proposal from the Wild Goose Resource Group on how to make the most of minimal congregational song resources in an accessible and resilient way.

Wild Goose Publications Strange Majesty: The hymns of Leith Fisher

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIf ever a book was written about Leith Fisher's life, it would need numerous chapters to cover his many gifts, interests and life experiences. Leith was a parish minister in the Church of Scotland in Glasgow and Falkirk, a member of the Iona Community, a broadcaster, contributing to BBC's Thought for The Day; he served on presbytery committees, and was Convener of the General Assembly's Panel on Worship. He was a gifted speaker (and also a gifted listener) and his pastoral abilities were legendary. In a tribute to him following his death in 2009 Leith was described as one of the ablest ministers of his generation'. For all his activity, Leith was also at his desk, sometimes late into the night, writing poems, articles, reports, life-changing letters, gospel commentaries, prayers and hymns. Seven of these were included in the fourth edition of the Church Hymnary (2005), and hymns like For your generous providing' and Christ is our light' are now established in the song of the church. At his death Leith left a number of unpublished songs and hymns, the best of which editor Douglas Galbraith has had the privilege of bringing together here, with Leith's pieces from CH4, in this collection. Like most good hymns, these started life in a local parish or situation, and explore themes not easily found in the standard repertoire. They are set not only to known hymn tunes but to traditional Scottish melodies, including from the Hebridean tradition, which was a much-loved part of the author's musical landscape. It is hoped that these songs will add to the quality and breadth of the praise and prayer of the church. Douglas Galbraith has edited several publications, including Leap, My Soul, hymns from Africa gathered by Tom Colvin; Worship in the Wide Red Land; The Church of Scotland Year Book; the church music magazine Different Voices, and was on the editorial committees of Common Ground and the Church Hymnary (CH4). Ann's images are icon-like in their depth and focus; her prayers are poetic and prophetic. Book SynopsisWe may read the Bible to score political points. We may read it to get ideas for addresses and talks. But how often do we read the Bible to feed our heart and soul?In over 30 years of ministry Thom Shuman had taught studies on just about every book in the Bible and had gone through the cycle of Sunday readings many times. He'd spent a lot of professional' time in the Bible, but realised he'd never really read the Bible from beginning to end to feed his spiritual life. So that's what he did, each day discovering a word, phrase or verse which spoke to him, letting it play around in his mind, and then writing a short prayer or nudge'. At the end of the year, he had 365 of them, which are shared with you here. I hope they speak to your heart and soul in some way,' Thom says. you begin bycrafting graceout of chaos;grace isthe best friendwho never abandonsus;grace will walkus home toyou.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDuring the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in spring 2020, many people turned to writing: diaries, letters, cards, poems. Human words, sent out across the void of our isolation, shouted into the storm over which we had no control. What we could do was communicate with each other, raise our voices against the silence of separation, argue with our own doubts, call out to God, express our fragile hope. Here are the voices of just a few members and associates of the Iona Community with poems, psalms, songs, affirmations of faith and prayers written during a full and fraught ten weeks. We offer these human words believing that when the darkness seems overwhelming, light dawns; that into the silence of our worst fears God speaks a living Word. Also contains the song We Will Meet' by John L Bell & Hans-Olav Moerk.

When the Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020, and church buildings were closed, Thom Shuman began composing a series of morning and evening liturgies to share with his congregation on Zoom expressing what was happening in the life of the community, in his own life and in the life of the world. How shall we pray this morning? For what shall we pray this night? includes some of those liturgies, along with two weeks of Bible readings and poems, to make up a month of worship resources for a time of pandemic. • Latin Liturgical Psalters in the Bodleian

Bodleian Library Latin Liturgical Psalters in the Bodleian

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe liturgical psalter is one of the most important medieval Christian books and the most frequently and richly illuminated of medieval liturgical manuscripts. In its simplest form the psalter included 150 psalms, preceded by a calendar and followed by the canticles for the daily offices, the litany of saints and collects. This basic structure was very stable throughout the Middle Ages and is found in an overwhelming majority of psalters from different countries. In spite of the similarity of core content, psalters were very variable in their size, decoration, choice of supplementary texts and style of presentation, reflecting the interests and requirements of a wide range of lay and religious patrons. Latin Liturgical Psalters in the Bodleian Library contains descriptions of 111 psalters from Britain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain, ranging in date from the ninth to the sixteenth century. Each entry includes a description of contents, decoration, physical makeup and provenance, together with a bibliography. The entries are supplemented by comparative tables and indices to assist the study of illumination, manuscript presentation and the liturgical use of the psalms. Full colour images of pages from each of the manuscripts are also included, some of which are reproduced here for the first time. This catalogue brings together important information on a stunning selection of manuscripts held in the Bodleian Library, providing an invaluable resource for scholars.Trade Review'This is a splendid catalog. . . . Solopova is particularly to be congratulated for the precise and careful details she gives enumerating the many textual differences among the psalters and their range of purpose and usage. Important, excellent, and extremely helpful, . . . the impeccable entries demonstrate just how carefully and intelligently this catalog was developed and produced.' -- M. J. Toswell * Speculum *'This is a publication to be celebrated for its inspired vision and rigorous scholarship. . . . The introduction is succinct and lucid, and it provides a useful starting point for anyone new to the study of medieval psalters. . . . [But] the greatest achievement of this catalogue is the detailed yet manageable descriptions of the manuscripts. Many of the articles amount to scholarly articles, with the depth and breadth of research rarely matched.' * TLS *
