Jewish Lights Publishing Soulwork of Clay: A Hands-on Approach to
Book SynopsisDrawing on her first-hand experience of working with clay, Bankson takes readers through the seven-step process of making clay into a pot, drawing parallels at each stage to the process of spiritual growth: . Grounding: Connecting with our core elements . Kneading: Awakening to the inner realm . Centering: Focusing on creative possibility . Shaping: Balancing inner and outer tension . Finishing: Trimming away the excess . Decorating: Adding a playful touch . Firing: Committing to transformation Because clay is such an elemental substance, Bankson proposes that it calls us to let go of our pretensions - "it's just mud!" - and play as a little child. This simple connection with the earth, however, has the potential to put us "in touch with the whole of creation and, at the same time, our soul's longing to participate as an artist, creating something new and unique." Through reflective questions in each chapter - along with a wealth of unique clay projects that even beginners can do! - Bankson invites us on a journey of spiritual discovery, a path of reconnecting with our body and spirit and with the earth itself.

University of Delaware Press Shapely Bodies: The Image of Porcelain in
Book SynopsisShapely Bodies: The Image of Porcelain in Eighteenth-Century France constructs the first cultural history of porcelain making in France. It takes its title from two types of “bodies” treated in this study: the craft of porcelain making shaped clods of earth into a clay body to produce high-end commodities and the French elite shaped human bodies into social subjects with the help of makeup, stylish patterns, and accessories. These practices crossed paths in the work of artisans, whose luxury objects reflected and also influenced the curves of fashion in the eighteenth century. French artisans began trials to reproduce fine Chinese porcelain in the 1660s. The challenge proved impossible until they found an essential ingredient, kaolin, in French soil in the 1760s. Shapely Bodies differs from other studies of French porcelain in that it does not begin in the 1760s at the Sèvres manufactory when it became technically possible to produce fine porcelain in France, but instead ends there. Without the secret of Chinese porcelain, artisans in France turned to radical forms of experimentation. Over the first half of the eighteenth century, they invented artificial alternatives to Chinese porcelain, decorated them with French style, and, with equal determination, shaped an identity for their new trade that distanced it from traditional guild-crafts and aligned it with scientific invention. The back story of porcelain making before kaolin provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of artisanal innovation and cultural mythmaking. To write artificial porcelain into a history of “real” porcelain dominated by China, Japan, and Meissen in Saxony, French porcelainiers learned to describe their new commodity in language that tapped into national pride and the mythic power of French savoir faire. Artificial porcelain cut such a fashionable image that by the mid-eighteenth century, Louis XV appropriated it for the glory of the crown. When the monarchy ended, revolutionaries reclaimed French porcelain, the fruit of a century of artisanal labor, for the Republic. Tracking how the porcelain arts were depicted in documents and visual arts during one hundred years of experimentation, Shapely Bodies reveals the politics behind the making of French porcelain’s image. Book SynopsisNAMED A BEST NEW POTTERY BOOK TO READ IN 2022 BY THE BOOK AUTHORITYLavishly illustrated with over 250 full-color photographs of unique designs and rare methods, providing an in-depth look at the pottery produced in the FayoumThe Fayoum, a broad, fertile depression in Egypt’s Western Desert, known for its great salt lake, its rich green fields, and its unique pharaonic and Greco-Roman remains, is also home to three very different centers of pottery production. The potters of Kom Oshim specialize in decorated garden pots and other utilitarian ware, and guard the special secret of how to make the largest clay vessels in Egypt, up to an extraordinary two and a half meters tall. At al-Nazla, ancient traditions are kept alive, as members of a single extended family continue to use millennia-old techniques passed down from generation to generation, hand-forming among other things their distinctive spherical water jars with amazing dexterity and speed. In the small village of Tunis, the establishment of a pottery school by a Swiss couple in 1990 led to a complete transformation, and the village now hosts more than twenty-five pottery workshops and showrooms, whose products are sold in Cairo, London, and New York.In this lively insight into a varied and vital craft, the author reveals the stories of the three villages and the skilled potters who make their living there, looking at how they learned their trade and how they work, from the preparation of the clay to the formation of the pots on the wheel or by hand, to the decoration, the glazing, and the firing, and finally to the display or distribution and sale of the finished product. For past and future travelers to Egypt, lovers of the craft of pottery, practitioners, and collectors, this beautifully illustrated exploration of the ceramics of the Fayoum will inspire and enchant.Trade ReviewA Best New Pottery Book To Read In 2022 (The Book Authority)"An informative and lyrical celebration of the Fayoum, the potters, and their craft, Fayoum Pottery balances information and historical context with an almost poetic description of time and place. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Shoji Hamada: A Potter's Way and Work
Book SynopsisAn in-depth portrait of the life and work of Shoji Hamada, one of the key figures behind the development of studio pottery in the 20th century, and the legacy he left. Shoji Hamada was one of the seminal figures in 20th century ceramics. Along with the British potter Bernard Leach, he was instrumental in the development of the international Studio Pottery movement in the early 1900s. Their dramatic influences are still felt today, particularly in the United States and Great Britain. Hamada, also a major figure in Japan’s folk art revival, was designated a ‘Living National Treasure’ by the Japanese government in 1955 and awarded the Order of Culture in 1968. Shoji Hamada is an ebullient and fascinating portrait of a great potter, tracing his place in the ceramic tradition and revealing a keen perception of his energetic lifestyle, dazzling work cycle, and intriguing specifics about the firing of his kilns. The text and over 200 new colour photographs from Peterson’s stay at Hamada’s compound in 1970 present a wealth of detail about techniques and processes. Equally important are the author’s insights depicting Hamada’s bequest to us: one whose life was concentrated toward the perpetuation and achievement of fundamental, unchanging and universal values and goals. In this completely re-designed and updated version of her classic book, Susan Peterson brings together the East-West connection personified by Hamada and Leach. In a completely new concluding chapter, she assesses Hamada’s ongoing legacy to the world of studio pottery. This is an authoritative account of one of the towering figures in the ceramics world by one of the first people to welcome him to America in the early 1950s. The book is a must for anyone interested in the evolvement of hand pottery and the dynamics of ceramics in general.Trade ReviewThis book covers anything and everything one might want to know about the potter and his work, but even so, it is still an incredibly easy read. The language is accessible to people who have not studied pottery, but also enriching for those that have. The book covers everything from his workflow, techniques, glazes, kilns, family life, and even the way Hamada himself thinks. [...] The photo albums scattered throughout the book are both an enjoyable and invaluable addition to the biography [...] If you are at all a fan of the arts, even just a little, I would definitely recommend this book. -- Ruth Duncan * Union University Library Blog *Table of ContentsForeword By Bernard Leach Acknowledgements 1. Book SynopsisInterviewing nearly 30 of the Aldermaston potters, many of whom have written some fascinating submissions about this incredible workshop. The book features a wonderful, previously unpublished, account from Geoffrey Eastop's memoirs, about how he came to Aldermaston and helped to establish the pottery with Alan Caiger-Smith in the mid 1950s. The book tells the story of the 51 years of the Aldermaston Pottery, through the words and experiences of as many of the potters as possible, whilst also chronicling Alan's own achievements over the decades. The images also play an important part in telling the story. The book also follows the subsequent careers of the potters, and tell how they went on to make a difference, and to sustain the maiolica tradition, all over the world. As there has never been a book published that has traced the career of this important figure or the life of the pottery, or the 60 people who worked and trained there, and there are very few photographic records of this lost way of working, this book will fill that gap in the history of 20th century studio pottery.Table of ContentsContents: Chapter 1 - Alan Caiger-Smith; Chapter 2 - Early Days at Aldermaston and the Homer Street Connection (1955-1963); Chapter 3 - The Turning Point - The Wood-fired Kiln (1961-62); Chapter 4 - A Co-operative Workshop; Chapter 5 - Discovering Lustre (1975); Chapter 6 - Commissions and Exhibitions (1977-1985); Chapter 7 - The Closing Years and the Final Exhibition; Chapter 8 - A Different Way of Working (1993-2006); Chapter 9 - The Aldermaston Legacy; Conclusion by Alan Caiger-Smith; Appendix - Timeline, Potters and Marks, Exhibitions, Public Collections; Notes/Endnotes; Select Bibliography; List of Contributors; Index.

The book is founded on Stefan's enterprise and production of wood-fired ceramics with photos and diagrams describing the tasks and techniques. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend
Book SynopsisA stunning book on kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with precious metals to highlight its history beautifully. A broken pot is made whole again, and within its golden repair we see a world of meaning. Kintsugi is the art of embracing imperfection. In Western cultures, the aim of repair has been to make the broken item ‘as good as new’. Kintsugi on the other hand, is a Japanese art that leaves an obvious repair – one that may appear fragile, but which actually makes the restored ceramic piece stronger, more beautiful, and more valuable than before. Leaving clear, bold, visible lines with the appearance of solid gold, it never hides the story of the object’s damage. Kintsugi traces memory, bringing together the moment of destruction and the gold seams of repair through finely-honed skills and painstaking, time-consuming labour in the creation of a new pot from the old. There is a story to be told with every crack, every chip. This story inevitably leads to kintsugi’s greatest strength. an intimate metaphoric narrative of loss and recovery, breakage and restoration, tragedy and the ability to overcome it. A kintsugi repair speaks of individuality and uniqueness, fortitude and resilience, and the beauty to be found in survival. Kintsugi leads us to a respectful and appreciative acceptance of hardship and ageing. Author Bonnie Kemske explores kintsugi's metaphorical power as well as exploring the technical and practical aspects of the art, meeting with artists and ceramists in Japan and the US to discuss their personal connection to this intricate technique. With the inclusion of diary entries, personal stories, and in-depth exploration of its origin and symbolism, this book shows kintsugi's metaphoric strength as well as its striking aesthetic, making it a unique and powerful art form that can touch our lives.Trade ReviewThoughtfully written and splendidly illustrated. * The Economist *You’re given the opportunity to travel to Japan through its pages and absorb more of this brilliant philosophy on objects and life. * Stylist *Bonnie Kemske traces the history of the art form in this lavishly illustrated book. * The i *Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend is a beautifully illustrated book where artist, Japanese tea ceremony student and author Bonnie Kemske guides us through the origins and techniques of kintsugi . . . It is visually gorgeous, its selection of pictures exquisite and it taught me a great deal of kintsugi. . . . The book is a testament of a narrative of loss and recovery, breakage and restoration, tragedy and ability to overcome it in respectful acceptance of loss and hardships. -- Eleonora Faina * The Japan Society *Kintsugi reveals how much more varied and exciting the practice of ceramic joining is than the iconic version now known internationally. * The Los Angeles Review of Books *Kemske’s rich and comprehensive survey, which also takes in the ritual of the tea ceremony, the contemporary art scene of kintsugi, and the framing of the techniques as a metaphor for overcoming tragedy and as a model of sustainability, illuminates a complex cultural sensibility with a long pedigree. * World of Interiors *Table of ContentsPrologue 1. Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA Moche Fineline Painting From San Jose De Moro
Book SynopsisMoche civilization flourished on the north coast of Peru from AD 200 to 800. Although the Moche had no writing system, they left a vivid artistic record of their beliefs and activities on intricately painted ceramic vessels, several thousand of which are scattered in museums and private collections throughout the world today. Unfortunately, nearly all were looted by grave robbers so their origin and context are unknown. In recent years, however, through a combination of archaeological excavation and stylistic analysis, it has been possible to identify more than 250 painted vessels from the site of San Jose de Moro. To date, this is the largest sample of Moche art from a single place and time. Thus it provides a unique opportunity to identify a distinct sub-style of Moche ceramics, and to assess its range of artistic and technological variation. Moreover, within the sample it is possible to identify multiple paintings by 18 different artists, thus elucidating the range of subject matter that an artist would paint, as well as the variation in the way he would portray the same scene. By discussing and illustrating more than 200 painted vessels from San Jose de Moro, this volume provides insights about a community of ancient Peruvian potters who shared a distinctive painting style and left a fascinating record of their achievement.

Hirmer Verlag A Princely Pursuit: The Malcolm D. Gutter
Book SynopsisMalcolm D. Gutter has been forming his porcelain collection over several decades with a focus on early Meissen, particularly the royal collection that Augustus II commissioned for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden. In addition to the porcelain works produced at Meissen, Augustus II avidly collected those imported from China and Japan. A Princely Pursuit reproduces many documented pieces from this royal collection, including both Meissen and Asian works. The Gutter promised gift exemplifies a significant range of early Meissen wares, including many examples of early red stoneware (Böttgersteinzeung) as well as numerous pieces created under Johann Höroldt’s (1696–1775) direction. A Princely Pursuit will serve as an important contribution to the field of porcelain studies, especially in its significance to San Francisco. Gutter’s entire collection of Meissen and related Asian porcelains has been promised to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the city he calls home and where he began collecting more than forty years ago. Through the Malcolm D. Gutter collection, the Legion of Honor will become a destination for the study of early Meissen porcelain, and the publication of this catalogue exemplifies this ongoing scholarship. A Princely Pursuit presents more than one hundred significant pieces from the collection of Malcolm D. Gutter, an avid collector of Meissen works of art. His collection represents exemplary works from the German manufactory, including especially the royal collection that Augustus II commissioned for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden.

Prestel Indian Tiles: Architectural Ceramics from
Book SynopsisHistoric India, which now encompasses the modern nations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, is celebrated for the richness of its architectural and decorative arts, but less well known for glazed tiles. Arthur Millner opens up this hitherto neglected subject with a richly illustrated narrative. Millner traces the craft’s roots in Muslim Persia, Afghanistan and Central Asia, showing how imported glazing techniques combined with an ancient local tradition of clay craftsmanship. He explores the production, designs and influences in Indian tiles from antiquity to the colonial period, tracing the historical evolution through a series of key eras, including the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire in Northern India. Although glazed tiles are generally associated with Islam, they also briefly flourished in both Hindu strongholds, such as Gwalior and Orchha, and in Christian Portuguese-ruled Goa. More than four hundred photographs, many of little-known sites, are drawn from the author’s years of travel as well as from colleagues, the V&A Museum archives and other celebrated institutions. These images capture the architectural context and beauty of the designs, providing a visual compendium of styles and techniques. Taken together they offer a unique chronicle of an environmentally threatened aspect of the region’s cultural, artistic and religious evolution over centuries.
