John Catt Educational Ltd SEND Huh curriculum conversations with SEND
Book SynopsisHuh is the Egyptian god of endlessness, creativity, fertility and regeneration. He is the deity Mary Myatt and John Tomsett have adopted as their god of the curriculum. Their Huh series of books focuses on how practitioners design the curriculum for the young people in their schools. The Huh project is founded on conversations with colleagues doing great work across the education sector. In SEND Huh, Mary Myatt and John Tomsett discuss curriculum provision for pupils with additional needs with some of the leading experts in the field.Mary and John interviewed pupils, parents, teachers, headteachers, CEOs, educational consultants and lecturers. They then edited the transcriptions of those interviews to provide an ambitious, thoughtful, nuanced and challenging vision of what the best possible provision looks like for children with additional learning needs. The challenging conversations that comprise SEND Huh paint an inspiring picture that is hugTrade ReviewI simply adore this book. It rams home that being inclusive is not an excuse for low expectations. Instead of being an afterthought when it comes to curriculum, children with additional needs become drivers for what a well-rounded curriculum is for all young people. Curriculum decisions are about building and accelerating learning, and the years of the deficit model of SEND should be put to bed by one reading of this latest book in Myatt and Tomsett's powerful Huh series. * Vic Goddard, co-principal, Passmores Academy and CEO of Passmores Cooperative Learning Community *SEND Huh weaves together a sophisticated and thoughtful narrative of lived experiences from a wide range of contributors from every corner of the sector. It's not often that a non-fiction book has such a profound effect on me. I found myself thinking about it days after, contemplating the nuance, mulling over the complexity, grappling with the challenges and acknowledging the rallying cry to ensure our pupils with additional needs receive an ambitious education that enables them to thrive. * Kathryn Morgan, senior capacity improvement advisor, TSHC *There is something very special in education, and that is the care and clarity with which the contributors in SEND Huh speak about the young people in their communities, and the work they and their colleagues do to smash blunt blanket presumptions, remove obstacles and champion all children. The knowledge and wisdom of the contributors encourages us all to recognise that there is so much to learn about provision, practice, curriculum and attitudes towards supporting children with additional needs. We will all teach children who will need something additional or different; knowing what or how can often be a challenge. This book meets colleagues where they are in their journey of understanding the what and the how, and encourages us to look with fresh eyes at the research, the reality and the joyful rewards of teaching and learning from children with additional needs. * Emma Turner, deputy director of education, BDMAT *

John Wiley and Sons Ltd With Child: Lee Child and the Readers of Jack
Book SynopsisWith a foreword by Lee Child.Andy Martin spent a year in the company of Lee Child, creator of tough-guy hero Jack Reacher. With Child is the diary of their adventures, tracking the publication and reception of Make Me, the writing of Night School at an apartment in Manhattan, the filming of Never Go Back in New Orleans, all the agony and ecstasy of the creative process and the sheer hard work of selling a bestseller. They go on the road together, from TV studios to bookstores, from Harvard to Stockholm, amid literary conferences and gunshows, rivalries and reviews ranging from adulatory to murderous. We meet fellow writers like Stephen King and David Lagercrantz and Karin Slaughter, and dissect the latest novel from Jonathan Franzen. But Martin also reaches out to Child’s legion of readers in America and around the world. He tracks down a woman in Texas whose name appears in the home invasion scene in Make Me; he goes up a mountain in Montana in search of the only reader who thinks Reacher is a “lightweight”; and he talks to obsessive fans from Europe to South Africa who find salvation or consolation in the colossal form of Jack Reacher. This compelling account of life on the road with Lee Child demonstrates that readers are just as important as writers in the making of modern fiction.Trade Review"You don’t even have to be a 'Reacher creature' (as the fans are known) to enjoy this sly, fly-on-the-wall take on the blockbuster production line."The Sydney Morning Herald

Manchester University Press Fictional Television and American Politics: From
Book SynopsisWe live in a golden age of fictional television, while our politics has never been so controversial. This book explores that relationship, asking what it is that some of America’s most popular TV shows have to say about its politics. Perhaps, like the author, you have gasped at Game of Thrones and balked at Breaking Bad. This book illustrates how, far from being outside of politics, shows such as these are deeply political, helping to fill our world with meaning. To this end, the book analyses Game of Thrones, House of Cards, The West Wing, Homeland, 24, Veep, The Wire, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. These are all politically consequential shows that shape how we feel and think about world politics.Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsList of abbreviationsIntroductionPart I: Watching television1 America and the screen2 Screening America under Bush, Obama, and Trump3 Drawing lines: world politics and popular culture4 Analysing fictional television Part II: Politics and television5 World politics as realpolitik (in House of Cards and Game of Thrones)6 Constructing counter-terrorism (in Homeland, 24, and The West Wing)7 Imagining the president (in The West Wing, 24, and Veep)Part III: Television and our political world8 Ethics and inequality (in The Wire)9 Being human in a world of zombies (in The Walking Dead)10 The personal is political (in Breaking Bad)ConclusionBibliographyIndex

Manchester University Press How Media and Conflicts Make Migrants
Book SynopsisThe book explores how we understand global conflicts as they relate to the “European refugee crisis”, and draws on a range of empirical fieldwork carried out in the UK and Italy. It examines how global conflict has been constructed in both countries through media representations – in a climate of changing media habits, widespread mistrust, and fake news. In so doing, it examines the role played by historical amnesia about legacies of imperialism – and how this leads to a disavowal of responsibility for the causes why people flee their countries. The book explores how this understanding in turn shapes institutional and popular responses in receiving countries, ranging from hostility—such as the framing of refugees by politicians, as 'economic migrants' who are abusing the asylum system; to solidarity initiatives. Based on interviews and workshops with refugees in both countries, the book develops the concept of “migrantification” – in which people are made into migrants by the state, the media and members of society. In challenging the conventional expectation for immigrants to tell stories about their migration journey, the book explores experiences of discrimination as well as acts of resistance. It argues that listening to those on the sharpest end of the immigration system can provide much-needed perspective on global conflicts and inequalities which challenges common Eurocentric misconceptions. Interludes, interspersed between chapters, explore these issues in another way through songs, jokes and images.Trade Review'This volume explores connections between media representations, global migrants, and perceptions upheld and challenged by viewers in the UK and Italy during the 2010s. The text oscillates between chapters that unpack issues like "white amnesia" and "postcolonial innocence" among white, Western viewers, and brief "interlude" chapters that convey migrants’ insights into navigating different media perspectives and experiences within their new settings. For instance, the authors note a shift from print to new media consumption that necessitates steady access to the internet and mobile technology, which flies in the face of stagnant images of migrants as "not entitled" to such technology, further limiting their access to and sharing of information. Ultimately, the authors call for building international systems to disrupt the willful "forgetting" of interconnected global histories fueling migrants’ voyages, and to help them thrive in their new countries. This book could be useful for courses in political science, media studies, communications, and ethnic studies. Visual pairings might include pertinent excerpts from British and Italian newscasts from the period, along with relevant news articles and online posts, with the potential to integrate these media into a reflective "migrantification" assignment.'CHOICE -- .Table of ContentsList of figuresIntroduction: Conflict, media and displacement in the Twenty-First Century1 How postcolonial innocence and white amnesia shape our understanding of the “refugee crisis”Interlude: Global war and media absences2 War Narratives: Making sense of conflictInterlude: Songs, jokes, movies and other diversions3 Social media, mutual aid and solidarity movements as a response to institutional breakdownInterlude: How it feels to be made a migrant: restrictions, frustration and longing4 The processes of migrantification: how displaced people are made into migrantsInterlude: Telling stories about war differently5 Refusing the demand for sad storiesConclusion: Unsettling dominant narratives about migration in a time of fluxBibliography

Book SynopsisAside for the secretaries of state, those lofty roles at the Home Office, MOD, Exchequer, and Foreign office, the ministers of the UK are a cast of roles that expand, and contract based on the whims and political needs of the Prime Minister. Within their portfolios those MPs and Lords are immensely powerful - able to reshape whole sectors of British society, grant or refuse government contracts and planning permission, and intervene in matters throughout the country. And yet, few members of the British Public could name every single minister and fewer still could say the extent of each minister's responsibilities. We like to imagine that they are competent, prepared, and entirely in control, and we hold them to standards as though they are. But they are often none of those things. These men and women serve at the pleasure of the Prime Minister. Any misstep or scandal can invite media attention, public outcry, and their swift departure. At the same time, their resignations can shatter political alliances and bring down Prime Ministers and even governments. Their positions are, therefore, both immensely powerful and precarious. In Fifteen Minutes of Power, Peter Riddell draws on interviews with former ministers, conducted on behalf of the Institute of Government, to reveal the fraught existence of these powerful men and women.Trade ReviewA fluent, entertaining and at the same time serious analysis of the British way of governing -- Chris Mullin * Spectator *Should political wannabes be seeking some holiday literature, here is a tome which they really should read (preferably through their fingers) ... fascinating -- Ruth Wishart * Herald *Praise for In Defense of Politicians (In Spite of Themselves): In their hour of acute need, the British political class has found a true and candid friend in Peter Riddell part historian; part anthropologist; and part psychotherapist. Penguin Books Ltd The Big Con
Book SynopsisThere is an entrenched relationship between the consulting industry and the way business and government are managed today which must change.Mariana Mazzucato and Rosie Collington show that our economies'' reliance on companies such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG and EY stunts innovation, obfuscates corporate and political accountability and impedes our collective mission of halting climate breakdown. The ''Big Con'' describes the confidence trick the consulting industry performs in contracts with hollowed-out and risk-averse governments and shareholder value-maximizing firms. It grew from the 1980s and 1990s in the wake of reforms by both the neoliberal right and Third Way progressives, and it thrives on the ills of modern capitalism, from financialization and privatization to the climate crisis. It is possible because of the unique power that big consultancies wield through extensive contracts and networks - as advisors, legitimators and outsourcers - and the illusion that they are objective sources of expertise and capacity. To make matters worse, our best and brightest graduates are often redirected away from public service into consulting. In all these ways, the Big Con weakens our businesses, infantilizes our governments and warps our economies.Mazzucato and Collington expertly debunk the myth that consultancies always add value to the economy. With a wealth of original research, they argue brilliantly for investment and collective intelligence within all organizations and communities, and for a new system in which public and private sectors work innovatively for the common good. We must recalibrate the role of consultants and rebuild economies and governments that are fit for purpose.

Penguin Books Ltd Animals Robots Gods
Book SynopsisHow do we live ethical lives alongside others? A fascinating, mind-expanding exploration of our moral universe We have always lived with ethically significant others, whether they are the pets we keep, the gods we believe in or the machines we are endowing with life. How should we treat them as our world changes? In Animals, Robots, Gods, acclaimed anthropologist Webb Keane provides a new vision of ethics, defined less by our minds, religion or society, and more by our interactions with those around us. Drawing on ground-breaking research by fieldworkers around the world, he explores the underpinnings of our moral universe. Along the way we investigate the ethical dilemmas of South Asian animal rights activists, Balinese cockfighters, Japanese robot fanciers -- even macho cowboys. We meet a hunter in the Yukon who explains his prey generously gives itself up to him; a cancer sufferer in Thailand who sees his tumour as a reincarnated ox; a computer that gets you to confess your anxieties as if you were on the psychiatrist's couch. With charm, wit and insight, Keane offers us a better understanding of our doubts and certainties, showing how centuries of conversations between us and non-humans inform our conceptions of morality, and will continue to guide us in the age of AI and beyond.

He shows that by taking account of our own activity of thinking, we can know the reasons for our actions. And if these reasons are taken from our world of ideals, then our actions are free, because we alone determine them. But this freedom cannot be settled for us by philosophical argument. It is not simply granted to us. If we want to become free, we have to strive through our own inner activity to overcome our unconscious urges and habits of thought. In order to do this we must reach a point of view that recognises no limits to knowledge, sees through all illusions, and opens the door to an experience of the reality of the spiritual world. Then we can achieve the highest level of evolution. We can recognise ourselves as free spirits. This special reprint, featuring the acclaimed translation by Michael Wilson, is being made available in response to public demand.

Watkins Media Limited Twelve Cries From Home: In Search of Sri Lanka's
Book SynopsisSince August 2020, the intimidation of witnesses and journalists has surged in Sri Lanka. Twelve Cries from Home navigates the memories and stories of twelve war survivors, mostly women and relatives of the disappeared, who wished to have their stories retold so that a permanent record might be made, and so that those outside the country might understand their experiences. The outcome of a journey across the island in late 2018 by writer and Professor of Literature Minoli Salgado, who was revisiting her ancestral home, Twelve Cries from Home is deeply-layered and localised work of travelling witness. It returns to the concept of home as a place of belonging and security, which is a lost ideal for most, and uses a Sri Lankan measure of distance – the call, or hoowa – to ask how we might attend to stories that are difficult to tell and to hear. Exploring the bitter complexity of war by presenting stories from four regions of Sri Lanka, it reveals the complex network of relationships between the agents of conflict and their victims, as well as the blurred boundary between victims and perpetrators, the role of informers and the process of ethical repair after traumatic experience. Twelve Cries from Home offers a rare glimpse into a country subject to enforced self-censorship, allowing us to take stock of social and political developments in Sri Lanka and what has and has not been achieved in light of the transitional justice mechanisms promised to the UN.Trade Review"This collection of true stories is the vital afterwork of any war. Here, Salgado collects and records testimony from those caught up. We gasp at what is being shared. It must be shared, read, heard, collected, disseminated. This is prize-winning work.”"A deeply sensitive and sensitizing book that offers a sophisticated understanding of real pain. Twelve Cries From Home is driven by a humanity that provides moral anchor in a terrain where the darkest instincts reign free.""A valuable document of testimony gathered during a brief time of greater openness in a country still shattered by war and cruelty.""A masterpiece."

Verso Books Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’
Book SynopsisHow the law harms sex workers - and what they want insteadDo you have to endorse prostitution in order to support sex worker rights? Should clients be criminalized, and can the police deliver justice? In Revolting Prostitutes, sex workers Juno Mac and Molly Smith bring a fresh perspective to questions that have long been contentious. Speaking from a growing global sex worker rights movement, and situating their argument firmly within wider questions of migration, work, feminism, and resistance to white supremacy, they make it clear that anyone committed to working towards justice and freedom should be in support of the sex worker rights movement.Trade ReviewWith fine, lucid discourse, Juno Mac and Molly Smith decline to engage in the typical back and forth that drones on between the would-be saviors, the scolds, and the glorifiers to go to the heart of the matter- sex work as labor, with a work force ready to speak their minds and fight for their rights. They avoid easy answers and ask the reader to rethink sex work. -- Susie Bright, author of Big Sex Little Death: A MemoirSmith and Mac are sharply honest about the emotional, social and political realities of sex work in all its forms and geographies, eschewing pearl-clutching or cheerleading for a laser-guided honesty and frankness about what can improve the lives and experiences of sex workers around the globe, regardless of social class. Revolting Prostitutes is key to understanding how important the rights of sex workers are, and what is at stake when policy is misguided or clouded in sentimentality and gut-feeling over straight evidence. A must-read for politicians, policy makers, and anyone keen to understand the realities of modern sex work. -- Dawn Foster, author of Lean OutRevolting Prostitutes will fuel the fight for sex workers' rights with fresh thinking on feminism, deep analysis of policing and the law, and a critical examination of sex work itself. Smith and Mac have drawn together a radically inclusive map for liberation. -- Melissa Gira Grant, author of Playing the WhoreEssential reading for feminists engaged in sex work and those studying it. By centering their analysis squarely on the issue of labor rights and upholding harm reduction as a critical benchmark, the authors take on entrenched positions in the feminist struggles over prostitution work and propose a subtle but powerful shift in the terrain of future debate. -- Kathi Weeks, author of The Problem with WorkRevolting Prostitutes is a book I have been waiting for. It is uniquely fit to address the destructive divisions that exist among feminists concerning prostitution. Rejecting the equally unacceptable alternatives of condemnation and glorification of sex work, the authors provide a powerful account of the work itself, the issues it raises, the institutional policy that shape it, all the while demonstrating that sex workers struggles are crucial to any movement for social justice. Well researched, beautifully written, Revolting Prostitutes should be widely read, especially, but non only, by feminists. -- Silvia Federici, author of Caliban and the WitchRevolting Prostitutes succeeds as a well-reasoned, grounded and stubbornly materialist defense of sex workers rights in a literature characterized largely by sex panic, voyeurism, and extrapolation. -- Jennifer McGibbon * Alternate Routes: A Journal of Critical Social Research *An essential addition to the feminist canon and required reading for anyone who cares about equality and human rights. * Independent *[Revolting Prostitutes] tackles complex topics that even sex workers struggle with, criticizing issues like classism in the sex worker community, professional dominatrixes who distance themselves from full-service sex workers out of whorephobia, and why decriminalization isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. -- Ana Valens * The Daily Dot *Revolting Prostitutes is a thrilling and formidable intervention into contemporary discussions of sex work, and settles the debate in favor of full and immediate global decriminalization. It does so without insisting that there is nothing troubling about sex work: about the psychosexual forces that lead men to buy it, or the economic forces that compel women to sell it. ... It is a model of how to write about politics - or, indeed, anything. -- Amia Srinivasan * The Chronicle of Higher Education *[Revolting Prostitutes] advocates for the complete decriminalization of sex work all over the world. -- River H. Kero * Book Riot *One of the most important books about sex work ... Beautifully written and meticulously researched, this book will change what you think you know about sex work. -- Kate Lister * Guardian *

Book SynopsisAre some criminals born, not made? What causes violence and how can we treat it? An Anatomy of Violence introduces readers to new ways of looking at these age-old questions. Drawing on the latest scientific research, Adrian Raine explains what it reveals about the brains of murderers, psychopaths and serial killers. Anti-social behaviour is complex, he argues, and based on the interaction between genetics and the biological and social environment in which a person is raised. These are among the thorny issues we can no longer ignore and this book is an important milestone in our growing understanding of criminal behaviour.Trade ReviewFascinating ...
