Central European University Press Engineering European Unity: The Quest for the
Book SynopsisWhich European and non-European ideas and practices facilitated the shaping of European unity? Or rather, which pursuits led to deadlocks in the cooperation between states? The book seeks answers to these questions by surveying the historical attempts at realizing supranational patterns of governance in Europe since the Middle Ages. The main focus is on the nineteenth and twentieth century organizational models of European unification. The analysis draws on an abundance of historical and legal source material. While the author encourages critical thinking about European integration, the exploration is admittedly based on specific values. Éva Bóka claims that the struggle for the humanization of power with its democratic creative force has been the major driver in the development of the system of liberties and the idea of European unity. The analysis of the historical process up to the Lisbon Treaty (2007) with the recognition of common, shared, and supported competences meets the author’s set of values to a great extent. The last part of the book examines whether the European Union can serve as a political and economic organizational model for other parts of the world.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction: The Idea of European Unity, the Western System of Liberties, and the Dichotomy of Federalism versus Intergovernmentalism 1. Central European University Press Ukraine'S Patronal Democracy and the Russian
Book SynopsisThe Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 jeopardizes the country's independence and its chances for Western-style development. However, the heroic attitude of the Ukrainian people, combined with a solidifying national identity, makes the domestic foundations for a western turn stronger than ever. After the invasion, building strong foundations of liberal democracy will be a top priority. In addition to alleviating immediate problems, the country must also address its post-communist legacy and address the constraints of patronalism. The authors of this edited volume, leading Ukrainian scholars supplemented by colleagues from Hungary, examine the chances of an anti-patronal transformation after the war. The book provides an overview of the development of Ukraine's political-economic system: color revolutions in 2004 and 2014 brought democratic transformation, but no change in the patronage system The result was patronal regime cycles instead of the emergence of a Western-type liberal democracy in the country. Building on the conceptual framework of the editors' The Anatomy of Post-Communist Regimes (CEU Press, 2020), the 12 chapters examine the impact of the war on patronal democracy, the relational economy, clientelist society, and the international environment in which Ukraine operates. This collection is complemented by the book entitled Russia. Imperial Endeavor and Geopolitical Consequences.Table of ContentsChronology of Modern Ukraine (1922–2022) Preface by Henry E. Hale I. The American University in Cairo Press Death and Burial in Ancient Egypt
Book SynopsisDeath, burial, and the afterlife were as important to the ancient Egyptians as how they lived. This well-illustrated book explores all aspects of death in ancient Egypt, including beliefs of the afterlife, mummification, the protection of the body, tombs and their construction and decoration, funerary goods, and the funeral itself. It also addresses the relationship between the living and the dead, and the magico-religious interaction of these two in ancient Egyptian culture.Salima Ikram's own experience with experimental mummification and funerary archaeology lends the book many completely original and provocative insights. In addition, a full survey of current development in the field makes this a unique book that combines all aspects of death and burial in ancient Egypt into one volume.Trade ReviewA Book Riot 100 Must-Read Book on Ancient History"Dr. Salima Ikram's Death and Burial in Ancient Egypt is among the best works on the subject presently on the market. Dr. Ikram's work breathes with a love of the subject matter and, refreshingly, lacks the academic jargon which mars so many otherwise fine books on this subject. Dr. Ikram has recreated the mummification process in modern-day laboratories and so brings a practical, as well as scholarly, approach to the subject. This book takes a reader from the early history of ancient Egypt through the beliefs and funerary practices of the people and includes the development of the mastaba tombs and the later pyramids. An excellent work and highly recommended."—Ancient History Encyclopedia"This is a splendid volume for all students of ancient Egypt, and it cannot be recommended too highly. Non-specialists will appreciate the useful glossary, chronology, and list of further readings. Highly recommended.”—G. R. G. Hambly, University of Texas at Dallas“This book provides an excellent introduction to the whole subject area.”—Rosalie David, Egyptian Archaeology"Summarizes current knowledge extremely well and is highly recommended to anyone interested in this particular aspect of Egyptology."—Victor Blunden, Ancient Egypt"Considering the book's wide scope, scientific reliability and comprehensible text, it is very well-suited for anyone wishing to learn more about ancient Egypt in a limited time. It provides a good overview for both lay-people and students of archaeology.”—PalArch's Journal of Archaeology of Egypt / EgyptologyTable of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1: The history and land of EgyptChapter 2: Beliefs in the AfterlifeChapter 3: MummificationChapter 4: Animal mummiesChapter 5: Funerary equipment and provisioning the deadChapter 6: The tombChapter 7: Funerals, mortuary cults, the living and the deadGlossaryChronologyFurther reading

Book SynopsisHave you ever stopped and wondered where your jeans came from? Who made them and where? Ever wondered where they end up after you donate them for recycling? Following a pair of jeans, Clothing Poverty takes the reader on a vivid around-the-world tour to reveal how clothes are manufactured and retailed, bringing to light how fast fashion and recycling are interconnected. Andrew Brooks shows how recycled clothes are traded across continents, uncovers how retailers and international charities are embroiled in commodity chains which perpetuate poverty, and exposes the hidden trade networks which transect the globe. Verso Books The Cost of Living Crisis: (and how to get out of
Book SynopsisWe are living through a cost of living crisis, with interest rate hikes and the prices of everyday consumables and energy bills sky-rocketing. Why is this happening? Sometimes we are told that wages are too high, or that the government has "printed" too much money or that events far away, such as the war in Ukraine, are solely to blame. The plain argument that high prices go together with high profits, falling wages, and weak production is often distorted and hidden by mainstream commentary in the media and elsewhere. This plain-speaking pamphlet tells it straight: the big businesses dominating production and distribution make huge profits out of high inflation, while working people lose out. It sets out factual evidence to illustrate that the source of record profits is the fall in real wages as inflation rises. A large part of the income of working people is being transferred directly into the profits of big business. The pamphlet shows that the deeper roots of the "cost of living crisis" lie in the very low investment and poor productivity growth for many years. The basic steps to resolving the crisis are simple: prices, especially of essentials, must be brought down, and wages, salaries, benefits, and pensions must be increased.Trade Review[An] excellent little book -- Will Podmore * The Morning Star *A small book with a mighty big punch ... Closely argued in clear, accessible language, [The Cost of Living Crisis] demolishes the decades-old lie that wage rises are the source of inflation, and backs that case with hard facts. * Scottish Socialist Voice *

Verso Books The Rest and the West
Book SynopsisThe unipolar world has exploded. In the wake of a pandemic that has tested economies and societies, geopolitical conflict is no longer a prospect but a reality. The Rest and the West locates the makings of this situation in turbulent dynamics of the capitalist world market. Understanding the conjuncture to spur competition for the political organization of the spaces of globalization, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson resist the reduction of this conflict to great power rivalries or processes of economic decoupling. Instead, they investigate how geoeconomic forces cross the rising centrality of war to capital operations and the transformations of capitalism. The arc of Mezzadra and Neilson’s analysis is wide, encompassing topics such as the pandemic crisis of mobility, shifts in the relation of social reproduction to capital circulation, state transformation in Russia and China, the politics of infrastructure and energy, and the impact of geopolitical change upon social st
