Popular culture, from Scarface and Miami Vice to Narcos and Better Call Saul, has continually positioned Latinos as an alien people who threaten the US body politic with drugs. Jason Ruiz explores the creation and endurance of this trope, its effects on Latin Americans and Latinx people, and its role in the cultural politics of the War on Drugs. • Home Care Fault Lines

Book SynopsisIn this revealing look at home care, Cynthia J. Cranford illustrates how elderly and disabled people and the immigrant women workers who assist them in daily activities develop meaningful relationships even when their different ages, abilities, races, nationalities, and socioeconomic backgrounds generate tension. As Cranford shows, workers can experience devaluation within racialized and gendered class hierarchies, which shapes their pursuit of security. Cranford analyzes the tensions, alliances, and compromises between security for workers and flexibility for elderly and disabled people, and she argues that workers and recipients negotiate flexibility and security within intersecting inequalities in varying ways depending on multiple interacting dynamics. What comes through from Cranford''s analysis is the need for deeply democratic alliances across multiple axes of inequality. To support both flexible care and secure work, she argues for an intimate community unionisTrade ReviewCranford's in-depth, thought-provoking, and insightful work is an important read not only for scholars of care work and labor, but also for activists, social workers, and organizers outside of academia who are interested in building alliances of care. * New Books Network *Home Care Fault Lines provides an innovative and essential analysis of the politics of community-based personal and attendant care and demonstrates the power of sociological analysis to inform policy and promote social justice. * American Journal of Sociology *In Home Care Fault Lines, Cynthia Cranford has written an ambitious and pathbreaking book. • Radioactive Ghosts

University of Minnesota Press Radioactive Ghosts

Book SynopsisA pioneering examination of nuclear trauma, the continuing and new nuclear peril, and the subjectivities they generate Amid resurgent calls for widespread nuclear energy and “limited nuclear war,” the populations that must live with the consequences of these decisions are increasingly insecure. The nuclear peril combined with the looming threat of climate change means that we are seeing the formation of a new kind of subjectivity: humans who are in a position of perpetual ontological insecurity. In Radioactive Ghosts, Gabriele Schwab articulates a vision of these “nuclear subjectivities” that we all live with. Focusing on the legacies of the Manhattan Project, Hiroshima, and nuclear energy politics, Radioactive Ghosts takes us on a tour of the little-seen sides of our nuclear world. Examining devastating uranium mining on Native lands, nuclear sacrifice zones, the catastrophic accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima, and the formation of a new transspecies ethics, Schwab shows how individuals threatened with extinction are creating new adaptations, defenses, and communal spaces. Ranging from personal accounts of experiences with radiation to in-depth readings of literature, film, art, and scholarly works, Schwab gives us a complex, idiosyncratic, and personal analysis of one of the most overlooked issues of our time.Trade Review"This book, a wake-up call and a tour de force of wide-ranging interdisciplinary scholarship, is beautifully written and accessible; Gabriele Schwab moves nuclear power discourse further by focusing on aspects rarely addressed together, like psychic, racial, gender and class implications. Her short personal interludes add yet another layer of meaning. Radioactive Ghosts should be required reading for everyone hoping the human species can survive."—E. Ann Kaplan, author of Climate Trauma: Foreseeing the Future in Dystopian Film and Literature"The innocent sounding Manhattan project forever put a Damocles sword on human existence. The first uranium that made the Project possible was dug from Africa. Drawing parallels between the extraction of uranium and the extraction of slave labor, Gabriele Schwab shows the prominent role of colonialism and race in the politics of nuclear production and possession. Radioactive Ghosts, with its clarity of prose and thought, reminds us that we humans have only the one planet. Why, oh, why should any nation be proud that they have the capacity to destroy all planetary life? Exorcise these radioactive ghosts by banning and destroying all these weapons of human destruction. End this MADNESS."—Ngugi wa Thiong'o, author of Wrestling with the Devil "Gabrielle Schwab’s thought-provoking book makes a timely contribution to the on-going nuclear debate."—Journal of Peace ResearchTable of ContentsContentsPreface: Of Three-Eyed Fish and Other GhostingsIntroduction: Why Nuclear Necropolitics Today?Part I. University of Minnesota Press Ambivalent Childhoods: Speculative Futures and

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisExplores childhood in relation to blackness, transfeminism, queerness, and deportability to interrogate what “the child” makes possibleThe concept of childhood contains many contested and ambivalent meanings that have extraordinary implications, particularly for those staking their claim for belonging and justice on the wish for inclusion within it. In Ambivalent Childhoods, Jacob Breslow examines contemporary U.S. social justice movements (including Black Lives Matter, transfeminism, queer youth activism, and antideportation movements) to discover and reveal how childhood operates within and against them.Ambivalent Childhoods brings together critical race, trans, feminist, queer, critical migration, and psychoanalytic theories to explore the role of childhood in shaping and challenging the disposability of young black life, the steadfastness of the gender binary, the queer life of children’s desires, and the precarious status of migrants. Through an engagement with“the psychic life of the child” that combines theoretical discussions of childhood, blackness, transfeminism, and deportability with critical readings of films, narrative, images, and social justice movements, Breslow demonstrates how childhood requires sustained attention as a complex and ambivalent site for contesting the workings of power, not only for the young. Ambivalent Childhoods is a forward-thinking and intersectional analysis of how childhood affects activism, national belonging, and the violence directed against queer, trans, and racialized people. Trade Review "This is a landmark achievement. Rigorous and lyrical, urgently political and achingly personal, Ambivalent Childhoods braids together scholarly approaches to childhood that center Blackness, transgender, queer sexuality, and migration in order to show how each twist through ambivalent, fraught, and necessary claims to the protections of childhood innocence."—Rebekah Sheldon, author of The Child to Come: Life after the Human Catastrophe "A highly engaging, timely, and forward-thinking interdisciplinary and intersectional exploration of how childhood shapes activism, national belonging, and the violence transacted against queer, trans, and racialized people. Jacob Breslow successfully weaves these differing fields and movements together to show us something vital but seemingly unnoticed about the role of the psychic life of the child in American fantasies about the political and citizenship."—Jules Gill-Peterson, author of Histories of the Transgender Child "Both deeply informative and good to think with."—Children’s Literature Association Quarterly "[Breslow] demonstrates one way to occupy the ambivalence of childhood, attending to its harmful effects while valuing its psychic power to sustain us. Ambivalent Childhoods invites us to engage with that ambivalence and the speculative futures it makes possible."—American Literary History Table of ContentsContentsIntroduction: The Wish for Childhood1. • Against the Commons: A Radical History of Urban

University of Minnesota Press Against the Commons: A Radical History of Urban

Book SynopsisAn alternative history of capitalist urbanization through the lens of the commons Characterized by shared, self-managed access to food, housing, and the basic conditions for a creative life, the commons are essential for communities to flourish and protect spaces of collective autonomy from capitalist encroachment. In a narrative spanning more than three centuries, Against the Commons provides a radical counterhistory of urban planning that explores how capitalism and spatial politics have evolved to address this challenge.Highlighting episodes from preindustrial England, New York City and Chicago between the 1850s and the early 1900s, Weimar-era Berlin, and neoliberal Milan, Álvaro Sevilla-Buitrago shows how capitalist urbanization has eroded the egalitarian, convivial life-worlds around the commons. The book combines detailed archival research with provocative critical theory to illuminate past and ongoing struggles over land, shared resources, public space, neighborhoods, creativity, and spatial imaginaries.Against the Commons underscores the ways urbanization shapes the social fabric of places and territories, lending particular awareness to the impact of planning and design initiatives on working-class communities and popular strata. Projecting history into the future, it outlines an alternative vision for a postcapitalist urban planning, one in which the structure of collective spaces is ultimately defined by the people who inhabit them.Trade Review "Against the Commons rewrites the history of capitalist urbanization since the eighteenth century by focusing on the role of planning in struggles around social reproduction. This fresh and exciting book is an invitation to scholars, students, and practitioners in planning, architecture, and urban studies to rethink the past and the future of urbanization."—Łukasz Stanek, University of Manchester "Against the Commons is one of the most important, original, and radical contributions to planning theory and history in the past fifty years. While Álvaro Sevilla-Buitrago offers a sharply critical perspective on the project of planning under capitalism, he also provides an inspiring call for new forms of collective self-management that protect, extend, and empower the commons."—Neil Brenner, University of Chicago "Against the Commons draws attention to the sparsely studied negative agency of urban planning and capitalist urbanization in the demise of achieving improvements associated with the commons, such as collectivization of society and creation of communal space." —Environment & Urbanization "Against the Commons is a truly ground-breaking work, which both deepens our understanding of the genealogies of urban planning and opens up several avenues for discussion and critique." —Housing Studies

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisAn imagination of possibilities, of miscalculations, of futures off-kilter “Probability is a chimera, its head is true, its tail a suggestion. Futurologists attempt to compel the head to eat the tail (ouroboros). Here, though, we will try to wag the tail.” —Vilém Flusser Two years after his Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, the philosopher Vilém Flusser engaged in another thought experiment: a collection of twenty-two “scenarios for the future” to be produced as computer-generated media, or technical images, that would break the imaginative logjam in conceiving the social, political, and economic future of the universe. What If? is not just an “impossible journey” to which Flusser invites us in the first scenario; it functions also as a distorting mirror held up to humanity. Flusser’s disarming scenarios of an Anthropocene fraught with nightmares offer new visions that range from the scientific to the fantastic to the playful and whimsical. Each essay reflects our present sense of understanding the world, considering the exploitation of nature and the dangers of global warming, overpopulation, and blind reliance on the promises of scientific knowledge and invention. What If? offers insight into the radical futures of a slipstream Anthropocene that have much to do with speculative fiction, with Flusser’s concept of design as “crafty” or slippery, and with art and the immense creative potential of failure versus reasonable, “good” computing or calculability. As such, the book is both a warning and a nudge to imagine what we may yet become and be.Trade Review"While the universe Flusser created with his previous book, Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, explores a single alternate lifeworld coherent in its mirroring of the human species by a cephalopod, each scenario in What If? suggests a variety of new ideas, given the speculative, projecting nature of their setting—in the best and most creative sense of ‘what if’—in the past, the present, or the future."—from the IntroductionTable of ContentsIntroduction: What If? Book SynopsisReflective Practice for Professional Development provides an accessible introduction to the theory and practice of reflection. In ten concise chapters it explores how reflecting on experiences can be used for professional development and help progress knowledge and skills. Using scenarios, questions and stories, the reader is encouraged to apply the content to their own context, demonstrating the importance of reflection in helping us to make sense as well as make the most of our professional experience. Exploring key themes such as the importance of criticality, models of reflection and connections between thought, language and actions, it considers the ways in which reflection can widen perspectives, generate deeper understanding of professional challenges and enhance creativity.Full of practical tools and approaches for enriching and recording reflections, this insightful book aims to simplify reflective practice for teachers. It is an ideal gTrade Review"A hugely enjoyable book that combines practical support for anyone who wishes to reflect, or indeed encourage reflection, with fascinating vignettes that illustrate the points being made. The writing has a lightness of touch that draws the attention of the reader in and makes this a book that will devoured in a short space of time.Whilst all the major models are covered, the strength of this book lies in its ability to explore the transformative power of reflection and to show how reflection is a state of mind, rather than a series of practical tasks. The harder edge that reflection can create is explored in chapter 4 where the author skilfully steers the reader away from treating reflection as a mere ‘comfort blanket’ towards using it to imbue thinking with a degree of criticality that will allow current practice to be challenged and improved. One of the most enjoyable sections refers to what happens when the process of reflection becomes a negative pattern. The reframing of expectations and perceptions can create a cycle of destructive and negative behaviour and the author offers practical solutions and theoretical exposition behind this behaviour.Much of the later part of the book draws on work from people such as Robinson and Bateson and links reflection to creativity. Railing against the perils of groupthink, the author champions the benefits of reflecting when challenging much of the orthodoxy and presents an alternative approach to the prevailing situation in education. The book ends with a quote for the ages ‘I wish I was your age and knew what I know now’, the strength of this book is that the author provides a way for us all to benefit from the wisdom of others, and also the wisdom that is inside us all."Dr Peter Wolstencroft, Deputy Director Business School, Liverpool John Moores University, UK"Carol Thompson has managed to marry two very different aspects of reflection into this excellent and highly-readable book: there is the rigorous attention to detail regarding the relevant theories in the field of professional reflection alongside pertinent activities and exercises to support practitioners within their own reflective practice. This is a book which is itself a model of reflection – the ability to think through what has been devised and stated in the search for creative experiment. The strategies scattered throughout the book, and summed up at the end, make this a really useful tool, not just for trainee teachers, but also for those who are more experienced in reflection, opening our eyes to trying something different. This will be added to the essential reading list for my trainee teachers, and I will certainly be using it to improve my own practice. Getty Trust Publications Art History and Anthropology: Modern Encounters,

Book SynopsisWhile today we are experiencing a revival of world art and the so-called global turn of art history, encounters between art historians and anthropologists remain rare. Even after a century and a half of interactions between these epistemologies, a sceptical distance prevails with respect to the disciplinary other. This volume is a timely exploration of the roots of this complex dialogue, as it emerged worldwide in the colonial and early postcolonial periods, between 1870 and 1970. Exploring case studies from Australia, Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, and the United States, this volume addresses connections and rejections between art historians and anthropologists—often in the contested arena of “primitive art.” It presents better- and lesser-known actors, from the art historian-anthropologist Aby Warburg to the modernist Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral, and from curators-museum directors such as Alfred Barr and René d’Harnoncourt to the curator-impresario Leo Frobenius. Entering the current debates on decolonizing the past, this collection will prompt reflection on future relations between these two fields.Table of ContentsIntroduction - Peter Probst The Allure of Architectural Ornament: Ethnographic Art and the “Shortcomings” of Inka Stonemasonry - Carolyn Dean Anatomy of a Chronological Hallucination: The Category of Primitive Art and Élie Faure’s L’art medieval - John Warne Monroe Ethnology at the Margins of “General Art History”: The Case of Alois Hein - Priyanka Basu What Happens When Natives Draw? Book SynopsisMax Stirner’s The Unique and Its Property (1844) is the first ruthless critique of modern society. In All Things are Nothing to Me, Jacob Blumenfeld reconstructs the unique philosophy of Max Stirner (1806–1856), a figure that strongly influenced—for better or worse—Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Emma Goldman as well as numerous anarchists, feminists, surrealists, illegalists, existentialists, fascists, libertarians, dadaists, situationists, insurrectionists and nihilists of the last two centuries. Misunderstood, dismissed, and defamed, Stirner’s work is considered by some to be the worst book ever written. It combines the worst elements of philosophy, politics, history, psychology, and morality, and ties it all together with simple tautologies, fancy rhetoric, and militant declarations. That is the glory of Max Stirner’s unique footprint in the history of philosophy. Jacob Blumenfeld wanted to exhume this dead tome along with its dead philosopher, but discovered instead that, rather than deceased, their spirits are alive and quite well, floating in our presence. All Things are Nothing to Me is a forensic investigation into how Stirner has stayed alive throughout time.

Chapters have been thoroughly updated to include recent developments in the field, including: the complex nature of conceptualization, etiology, and neurobiology; the various manifestations of dissociation in clinical and non-clinical forms; andTrade ReviewAn excellent successor to the 2009 standard work edited by Dell and O’Neil, this book is again the most complete and up-to-date source of the burgeoning theory, research and clinical practice of dissociation and the dissociative disorders. Diverging perspectives on the construct of dissociation collected together in one volume provide both an invitation for reflection and a foundation to stimulate further development in theory and clinical practice. With valuable contributions from leaders in the field, it is an absolute must for clinicians, researchers, and students interested in trauma and dissociation. Suzette Boon, PhD, co-author of Coping with Trauma-related Dissociation and Treatment of Trauma-related Dissociation and author of Assessment of Trauma-related Dissociation Leading voices in the trauma field, Drs. Dorahy, Gold, and O’Neil have created a wonderful and extremely comprehensive review of dissociation and dissociative disorders for clinicians and researchers. This updated and expanded 2nd edition consists of 49 chapters, all written by noted authorities, covering historical and conceptual issues, etiology, phenomenology, neurobiology, assessment, and multiple approaches to treatment. Notably, it unflinchingly articulates the major controversies and unresolved issues in the dissociation field and provides evenhanded synthesis and context whenever possible. Currently the most comprehensive and definitive work in the field, this book is a must-have for anyone studying or treating dissociation. Highly recommended.John Briere, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry & the Behavioral SciencesKeck - University of Southern California School of Medicine. Author of Treating risky and compulsive behavior in trauma survivors. NY: Guilford, 2019.Dorahy, Gold and O’Neil have mastered the art of "herding cats" in editing an extraordinarily diverse and deeply incisive collection of erudite and wise explorations of dissociative processes, those ubiquitous discontinuities, detachments, compartmentalizations, and disruptions of human relatedness, mental coherence, subjective sense of self, and neurobiological processes that skew experience as if they had a mind of their own. It's not just an exploration of depersonalization, derealization, amnesia, identity confusion and identity alteration; but, rather, it's a deep-dive into what makes this dissociative world of what is strangely familiar go round and round, and then some. This is a must read volume that will both challenge and entertain you as a fellow explorer in the land of that which is dissociative. There is something for everyone here, and nearly everything a serious clinician might want to understand as we try and help the people who struggle with complex phenomena and experience that hide in plain sight. Get it, read it, and ponder it. You will be enriched by your efforts and those of the authors and editors who have poured their hearts into this extraordinary work.Richard A. Chefetz, M.D., Private Practice, Washington, D.C., Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis; Intensive psychotherapy for persistent dissociative processes: The fear of feeling real. New York: W.W. Norton, 2015. This revision of Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders closely follows the tradition set by the original. The editors have done a masterful job producing an updated volume primarily devoted to the conceptual/theoretical advances about dissociation and its various expressions and disorders, written by identified experts in the field. The editors note that, at present, the understanding of the underlying principle of dissociation remains unclear and subject to debate among the chapter authors, some of whom hold very discrepant and even incompatible viewpoints. However, it is their hope and the promise of this book that the viewpoints they espouse and the advances they present consolidate in the future to ascertain that elusive underlying principle that may well be multi-factorial and multi-theoretical.Christine A. Courtois, PhD, ABPP, author, Healing the Incest Wound: Adult Survivors in Therapy (1988; 2010), co-author, Treating Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders (2013), co-editor, The Treatment of Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders (2012; 2020)This second edition is an edifying contribution to the field of psychology of trauma and dissociation that has now been updated. The strength of the book lies in its rich tapestry of chapters written by world experts echoing polyvocal ideas from divergent perspectives, using empirical evidence and theoretical developments. The multiple perspectives, whilst all connected, each carry their own distinct voice. Growth is stifled whenever absolutes are made and this book outlines the complexity and comprehensibility of dissociation as examined from different vantage points. The book is inspiring to teachers and students alike and is most welcome to practitioners of all psychological disciplines. Equinox Publishing Ltd Writing the Pandemic: An Instructor's Reflections

Book SynopsisWriting the Pandemic addresses the many challenges that writing instructors and students have faced since the arrival of COVID-19 and their ramifications for teaching and learning, including: Instructional Delivery – in-person, hybrid, and remote classes; Campus and Classroom Protocols – masking, distancing, and cleaning; Safety – quarantining, isolating, and reporting; and Justice – antiracism, political divides, and implications for education. The book is intended for an audience of first-year college composition teachers and other English and language arts instructors at the postsecondary and secondary levels who have experienced the seismic shifts in writing instruction and education more generally that have been necessitated by the pandemic. The author paints portraits of the pandemic experience that writing teachers and their students will relate to and offers practical learning material that can be used in writing courses. An original compilation of material on this theme, Writing the Pandemic includes reflections by a highly experienced writing instructor and his students together with ready-to-use assignments. It is written in a lively style by the author of English Composition Teacher’s Guidebook, Tom Mulder, an award-winning instructor who teaches at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan. With each chapter, the author offers selected notes blogged at intervals during critical incidents in the unfolding coronavirus as well as individual students’ stories along with their photographs, both inside composition classrooms adapted for distanced learning and writing or working from home. He also presents questions for reflection and his own speculations about the future that are sure to stimulate readers’ own thoughts about what has changed, and how much, as a result of the pandemic, and about what writing instruction will look like going forward.Table of ContentsSeries Editor’s Preface Preface Chapter 1. LID Publishing The Rise of the Metaverse: An essential guide to

Book SynopsisFOREWORD BY DON TAPSCOTT CEO of the Tapscott Group, executive chairman of the Blockchain Research Institute, and world-leading authority on the impact of technology on business and society. The Internet is now, but the future is the metaverse. The metaverse is a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and others. The prediction is that the next ten years will be the golden era of the metaverse, and everyone's life, entertainment, social interaction, and work will increasingly take place in the metaverse world. This book outlines six important trends in the era of the metaverse, that will see dramatic changes in technology and the bringing together of digital and physical worlds. People will experience a great migration of their social life and economic activities into the metaverse. Furthermore, the authors argue that, in the metaverse, we can get rid of many of the constraints of the physical world, achieve a better self in the new digital space, and truly maximize our own value as human beings. • Woman in Art: Helen Rosenau's 'Little Book' of

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Woman in Art: Helen Rosenau's 'Little Book' of

Book SynopsisGriselda Pollock reintroduces an important feminist forerunner in this new, full-colour setting of Helen Rosenau’s 1944 book Woman in Art Helen Rosenau (1900–1984) was part of the influential migration of European Jewish intellectuals who fled to Britain and the United States during the 1930s, bringing with them exciting innovations in art history’s methods. Only Rosenau, however, centred gender in her analysis. The result—her book Woman in Art: From Type to Personality—is a feminist art-historical project, as relevant today as when it was first published in 1944, in which Rosenau drew on contemporary discussions of gender in anthropology, philosophy, sociology, law, theology, history, and literature. In this new volume, ahead of the eightieth anniversary of its original publication, Rosenau’s erudite and accessible text is prefaced with a personal memoir by Adrian Rifkin, who was once her student, new research into the refugee experience by Rachel Dickson, and a portrait of Rosenau as feminist intellectual by Griselda Pollock. In conversation with this new setting of the original text, richly illustrated with colour images, Pollock offers eye-opening new readings of key aspects of Rosenau’s methods, concepts, arguments, and interpretations of famous artworks, establishing the place of Rosenau’s “little book of 1944” in the historiographies of both feminist thought and cutting-edge art history across two centuries. A digital facsimile of Woman in Art (1944) can be found on the Internet Archive (archive.org)

Book SynopsisA feminist analysis of young women and popular culture and a forceful critique of male domination in youth culture.Feminism, Young Women, and Cultural Studies collects together essays dating back to the mid-1970s to provide both a feminist analysis of young women and popular culture (including magazines, dance, and fashion) as well as a forceful critique of male domination in youth culture and the ways in which an ideology of adolescent femininity functioned so as to subdue and restrain young women in passive and subordinate gender unequal positions. The collection also shines a light on the kinds of methodologies being developed at Birmingham University CCCS as cultural studies was emerging as a distinct field of study. These essays when first published found their way onto the university undergraduate curriculum across the world and were translated into various languages. The author in this new edition provides a lively up-to-date introductory essay to each chapter as well as an engaging full introduction to the book as a whole that draws attention to race and ethnicity and intersectionality in studies of girlhood. It also considers the category of "girl" from queer perspectives and reflects on new inflections of teen femininity in popular fiction.

Book SynopsisHans Vaihinger (18521933) was an important and fascinating figure in German philosophy in the early twentieth century, founding the well-known journal Kant-Studien. Yet he was overshadowed by the burgeoning movements of phenomenology and analytical philosophy, as well as hostility towards his work because of his defense of Jewish scholars in a Germany controlled by Nazism. However, it is widely acknowledged today that The Philosophy of As If' is a philosophical masterwork. Vaihinger argues that in the face of an overwhelmingly complex world, we produce a simpler set of ideas, or idealizations, that help us negotiate it. When cast as fictions, such ideas provide an easier and more useful way to think about certain subjects, from mathematics and physics to law and morality, than would the truth in all its complexity. Even in science, he wrote, we must proceed as if a material world exists independently of perceiving subjects; in behaviour, we must act as Table of ContentsForeword to the Routledge Classics Edition Michael Rosenthal General Introduction Part 1: Basic Principles General Introductory Remarks on Fictional Constructs A. Book SynopsisBy February 2020, the U.S. economic expansion had become the longest on record. Unemployment was plumbing half-century lows. Stock markets soared to new highs. One month later, the public health battle against a deadly virus had pushed the economy into the equivalent of a medically induced coma. America''s workplaces-offices, shops, malls, and factories-shuttered. Many of the nation''s largest employers and tens of thousands of small businesses faced ruin. Over 22 million American jobs were lost. The extreme uncertainty led to some of the largest daily drops ever in the stock market.Nick Timiraos, the Wall Street Journal''s chief economics correspondent, draws on extensive interviews to detail the tense meetings, late night phone calls, and crucial video conferences behind the largest, swiftest U.S. economic policy response since World War II. Trillion Dollar Triage goes inside the Federal Reserve, one of the country''s most important and least understood institutions, to chronicle how its plainspoken chairman, Jay Powell, unleashed an unprecedented monetary barrage to keep the economy on life support. With the bleeding stemmed, the Fed faced a new challenge: How to nurture a recovery without unleashing an inflation-fueling, bubble-blowing money bomb?Trillion Dollar Triage is the definitive, gripping history of a creative and unprecedented battle to shield the American economy from the twin threats of a public health disaster and economic crisis. Economic theory and policy will never be the same.

Book SynopsisNow in paperback, this witty, irreverent narrative explores what we can learn from the extraordinary legacies of 30 iconic women--from Frida Kahlo and Liz Taylor to Nora Ephron and Lena Dunham--who forged their own unique paths in the world. Smart, sassy, and unapologetically feminine, this elegantly illustrated book is an ode to the bold and charismatic women of modern history. Best-selling author Karen Karbo (The Gospel According to Coco Chanel) spotlights a group of spirited rule breakers who charted their way with little regard for expectations: Amelia Earhart, Helen Gurley Brown, Carrie Fisher, Hillary Clinton, Amy Poehler, and Shonda Rhimes, among others. Their lives--imperfect, elegant, messy, glorious--provide inspiration and instruction for the new age of feminism we have entered. Karbo distills these lessons with empathy and humor, examining the universal themes that connect us to these mesmerizing personalities today: sucTrade Review“It’s the unexpected stories that are some of the most beguiling…These are messy, inspiring lives lived in public by necessity or choice. They often offer great humor too.” –San Francisco Chronicle"I think that this is a book that everyone should read and one that everyone should have on their shelves." - Ms. Nose in a Book“I love the idea of grabbing a cuppa, this book, and just diving right in. It’s such a great pick-me-up. Reading about these awesome women, their struggles, their successes, and how inspiring they are - just puts a smile on my face. They are awe-inspiring stories that I gobbled up with joy. --abookishwayoflife.blogspot.com “This book is a total inspiration for those that want to shake things up a little bit and push boundaries further for women…All I can say is I now have a very long list of biographies and memoirs on and by the woman that appear in this book.” –abookishaffair.blogspot.com“An engaging, inspiring collection where I enjoyed learning about amazing modern women and was left wanting to learn more.” –doingdeweydecimal.com “The author chose a great selection of women to represent the "difficult" woman.” –cerebralgirl.blogspot.com“Karbo has a knack for the nuances and sidebars that leave the reader not just a carrier of new facts, but of fascination and admiration for her subjects.” –The Register-Guard"This book is a history lesson that goes down like cotton candy: pink, sweet, and fun as hell. Don’t miss it." —NextTribe“With occasional anecdotes from her own life, Karbo delves into her personal relationship with each of these women…all of them important touchstones for her.” –LA Review of Books“In Praise of Difficult Women” is a collection of short biographies of well-known women who are difficult in what Karbo thinks is the best sense — strong, independent, smart, assertive." —The Seattle Times“Karbo, of Portland, Oregon, is embracing being a “difficult woman” in her newest book, which celebrates other women who broke the rules.” –Wisconsin State Journal, AP News“Refreshingly frank, Karbo’s book celebrates women who forged provocative identities and found life fulfillment despite the odds they faced. Inspiring reading about women who have shown “that it’s all right to occupy our humanity.” –Kirkus "The women chosen are eclectic, while the narrative is researched and informed yet conversationally welcoming...Karbo’s fondness for rule breakers and benders is clear, and she defends them through character quirks and missteps—real women lead real and flawed lives." –Foreword In Praise of Difficult Women offers many words of wisdom, including sage advice from fashion titan Diana Vreeland, who noted that the only right life to live is “the one you know you want, and you make it for yourself.” —Women's Voices ForeSight“Karbo examines the universal themes that connect each of us to these icons of female badassery and argues that being “difficult” can lead to a more fulfilling life.” –BookRiot “In 29 takes, Karen Karbo catalogs the ways in which a woman rankles: She can be independent, exacting, impatient, persistent, opinionated, angry, unaccommodating, ambitious, restless, confident, brilliant, articulate, or just plain visible. Nothing is lost on Karbo, from Elizabeth Taylor’s double eyelashes to the contents of Martha Gellhorn’s travel bag to Amelia Earhart’s homemade roller coaster. You’ll need two copies!”—Stacy Schiff, best-selling author of Cleopatra: A Life and The Witches “Part biography, part inspiration, all parts fascinating, In Praise of Difficult Women is a wise and hilarious reminder of the importance of being a pain in the ass. Keep it by your bedside.”—Meghan Daum, best-selling author of The Unspeakable “Give me difficult women or give me death. Karen Karbo’s In Praise of Difficult Women brings us all back to life by illuminating the paths of women who refused to shut up, sit down, hold still, behave, or smile on anyone’s terms but their own. A perfect manifesto as to why now is the time to get loud, unflinching, and brazen, exactly as we are.”—Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Misfit’s Manifesto “Difficult seems absolutely delightful in these absorbing, inspiring, and often surprising portraits that do more than entertain. They raise important questions about femininity and culture, power and bravery—and make us ask these same questions about our mothers, sisters, daughters, and ourselves. Though Karbo masterfully covers a wide range of exceptional women, what unites them is the way they make ‘difficult’ become a quality not to avoid but to aspire to with gusto.”—Lori Gottlieb, New York Times best-selling author of Marry Him

  • Side Affects: On Being Trans and Feeling Bad

University of Minnesota Press Side Affects: On Being Trans and Feeling Bad

Book SynopsisHow the “bad feelings” of trans experience inform trans survival and flourishing Some days—or weeks, or months, or even years—being trans feels bad. Yet as Hil Malatino points out, there is little space for trans people to think through, let alone speak of, these bad feelings. Negative emotions are suspect because they unsettle narratives of acceptance or reinforce virulently phobic framings of trans as inauthentic and threatening. In Side Affects, Malatino opens a new conversation about trans experience that acknowledges the reality of feeling fatigue, envy, burnout, numbness, and rage amid the ongoing onslaught of casual and structural transphobia in order to map the intricate emotional terrain of trans survival. Trans structures of feeling are frequently coded as negative on both sides of transition. Before transition, narratives are framed in terms of childhood trauma and being in the “wrong body.” Posttransition, trans individuals—especially trans people of color—are subject to unrelenting transantagonism. Yet trans individuals are discouraged from displaying or admitting to despondency or despair. By moving these unloved feelings to the center of trans experience, Side Affects proposes an affective trans commons that exists outside political debates about inclusion. Acknowledging such powerful and elided feelings as anger and exhaustion, Malatino contends, is critical to motivating justice-oriented advocacy and organizing—and recalibrating new possibilities for survival and well-being.Trade Review "Hil Malatino has become an indispensable thinker when it comes to trans scholarship, somehow able to put into words not just ideas but feelings that I had previously found ineffable and unspeakable, a talent that is familiar to me from the very best of literature."—Torrey Peters, author of Detransition, Baby "Down with the narrative tyranny of gender dysphoria and euphoria! Side Affects dares invoke a trans right to feel bad, not as antidote to normativity but as a portal to the complex feelings of transition that have been buried by medicalization, activist urgency, and the collateral damage of transphobia. Hil Malatino delivers a powerful trans reckoning for feminist, queer, and affect studies."—Jules Gill-Peterson, author of Histories of the Transgender Child "Overall, it’s an amazingly informative publication that I’m certain will enlighten many people in academia, trans, or otherwise."—neowitcher reads "Side Affects: On Being Trans and Feeling Bad, rejects the sanitized narratives of the moral and intellectual purity of transness meant to please the cis gaze. Instead, it delves into a conversation around the trans experience that acknowledges the reality of feeling, fatigue, envy, burnout, numbness, and rage amid the ongoing onslaught of casual and structural transphobia as a way to map the emotional terrain of trans survival."—Shondaland "The book provides an insider's view of the bleaker and more frustrating aspects of transition, too often downplayed since transgender people were forcibly enlisted as combatants in the so-called culture wars."—Boston Review "Malatino’s argument is firmly grounded in current trans, queer, and feminist theory, while it invokes the methods of poststructural critique and phenomenological interrogation."—CHOICE "Reading Hil Malatino’s Side Affects: On Being Trans and Feeling Bad offered me permission to see my life and the terror of this current political moment with more honesty."—X-Tra

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisQueer in Europe takes stock of the intellectual and social status and treatment of queer in the New Europe of the twenty-first century, addressing the ways in which the Anglo-American term and concept 'queer' is adapted in different national contexts, where it takes on subtly different overtones, determined by local political specificities and intellectual traditions. Bringing together contributions by carefully chosen experts, this book explores key aspects of queer in a range of European national contexts, namely: Belgium, Cyprus, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Nordic Region, The Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Spain. Rather than prescribing a universalizing definition, the book engages with a wide spectrum of what is meant by 'queer', as each chapter negotiates the contested border between direct queer activist action based on identity categories, and more plural queer strategies that call these categories into question. The first volume in English devoted to the exploration of queer in Europe, this book makes an important intervention in contemporary queer studies.Trade Review'Given how queer theory has been haunted by a troubling lack of specificity inherent in its central term, this volume comes as welcome relief. By focusing on concrete case studies and gathering a range of local stories, Queer in Europe does justice to the conceptual and geographical heterogeneity of the category queer.' Tim Dean, SUNY-Buffalo, USA 'This excellent book is a timely reminder that ’queer’ goes far beyond the debates between activists and academics in English-speaking countries. Differing cultural, social and political circumstances have brought forth a huge number of vibrant, productive and contentious takes on queerness across "Europe" which in itself is a concept impossible to reduce to a single definition.' Michael Gratzke, University of St Andrews, UK '... give[s] a much clearer picture of modern European Queer citizenship, activist movements, and issues as they have been affected by the historical influences of communism and capitalism... 'Queer in Europe' centers each chapter on one country and is less concerned with trying to locate a homogenous state of Queer activism on the European continent...' M/C Reviews 'It is an important intervention into current queer studies agenda by engaging and exploring the very status and notion of ’queerness’. By asking what is its meaning outside the originating cultural context of the United States, the book poses questions about the ontology of queer politics, and asks for the epistemological underpinning of queer studies... Downing and Gillett have done a praise-worthy job of collecting a vast range of European examples, and reading about them will be rewarding to anyone interested in the queer/sexuality studies. The book’s greatest strength and appeal is its richness and diverse a panorama of cases that sometimes may seem almost too hard to harness together. We are offered not only a range of country examples but also various ways of theorising/writing about them...' Psychology and SexualityTable of ContentsQueer in Europe

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisLooking at two of the key paradigms of the post-Cold War eraânational sovereignty, and human rights â this book examines the possibilities for their reconciliation from a global perspective. The real or imagined fear of a flood of immigrants has caused and fuelled the surge of an amalgam of populist political forces, anti-immigrant movements, and exclusionist nationalism in many developed countries. In the last decade, we have witnessed the emergence of two phenomena in the political and legal spheres. On the one hand, there are liberal globalists asking for respect and the protection of the basic human rights of migrants and asylum seekers and arguing for their civic and social integration into host societies. On the other hand, there are growing calls for a tougher stance on immigration, and powerful populist politicians and governments have emerged in many developed countries. How can the idea of universal human rights survive exclusionist nationalism that uses a populist, unscrupulous approach to its advantage? The contributors to this book explore the meaning of, and possible solutions to, this dilemma using a wide range of approaches and seek appropriate ways of dealing with these normative predicaments shared by many developed societies. Scholars and students of human rights, migration, nationalism and multiculturalism will find this a very valuable resource.

Book SynopsisBetween the State and the Schoolhouse examines the Common Core State Standards from the initiative’s promising beginnings to its disappointing outcomes. Situating the standards in the long history of state and federal efforts to shape education, the book describes a series of critical lessons that highlight the political and structural challenges of large-scale, top-down reforms. Education policy expert Tom Loveless argues that there are too many layers between the state and the classroom for a national standards approach to be effective. Specifically, he emphasizes the significant gap between states’ roles in designing education policy and teachers’ roles as implementers of policy. In addition, he asserts that top-down policies are unpredictable, subject to political and ideological pressures, and vulnerable to the pendulum effect as new reforms emerge in response to previous ones. One of the most ambitious education reforms of the past century, the Common Core aimed to raise student success, prepare larger numbers of students for both college and careers, and close achievement gaps. Yet, as Loveless documents, a decade later there remains a lack of significant positive impact on student learning.Between the State and the Schoolhouse marks an important contribution to the debate over the standards movement and the role of federal and state governments in education reform.

Book SynopsisBringing together scholars from English literature, geography, politics, the arts, environmental humanities and sociology, Imagining Apocalyptic Politics in the Anthropocene contributes to the emerging debate between bodies of thought first incepted by scholars such as Mouffe, Whyte, Kaplan, Hunt, Swyngedouw and Malm about how apocalyptic events, narratives and imaginaries interact with societal and individual agency historically and in the current political moment. Exploring their own empirical and philosophical contexts, the authors examine the forms of political acting found in apocalyptic imaginaries and reflect on what this means for contemporary society. By framing their arguments around either pre-apocalyptic, peri-apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic narratives and events, a timeline emerges throughout the volume which shows the different opportunities for political agency the anthropocenic subject can enact at the various stages of apocalyptic moments.
