Book SynopsisThe Kriegsmarines Scharnhorst was a German capital ship, described either as a battleship or battlecruiser, and the lead ship of her class, which included one other ship, Gneisenau. She was launched on 3 October 1936 and completed in January 1939, armed with nine 28cm C/34 guns in three triple turrets. She operated with Gneisenau for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. They took part in Operation Weserübung (AprilJune 1940), the German invasion of Norway, during which they sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escort destroyers Acasta and Ardent. Scharnhorst also sank HMS Rawalpindi in November 1939. In early 1943, Scharnhorst joined the Tirpitz in Norway to intercept Allied convoys to the Soviet Union. Oxford University Press Inc Civil Resistance
Book SynopsisA sweeping overview of civil resistance movements around the world that explains what they are, how they work, why they are often effective, and why they can fail.Civil resistance is a method of conflict through which unarmed civilians use a variety of coordinated methods (strikes, protests, demonstrations, boycotts, and many other tactics) to prosecute a conflict without directly harming or threatening to harm an opponent. Sometimes called nonviolent resistance, unarmed struggle, or nonviolent action, this form of political action is now a mainstay across the globe. It was a central form of resistance in postwar anti-colonial movements, the 1989 revolutions, and the Arab Awakenings, and people are practicing civil resistance at higher rates than ever before around the world, including in the United States. If we want to understand the manifold protest movements emerging around the globe, we need a thorough understanding of civil resistance and its many dynamics and manifestations. In CTrade ReviewCivil Resistance is an absolutely essential book for peace activists and anybody interested in history or in creating a better world. Teachers' College Press Good Questions Great Ways to Differentiate
Book SynopsisNow in its fourth edition - with more than 50 new questions and a new chapter on financial literacy - this bestselling resource helps experienced and novice teachers to effectively and efficiently differentiate mathematics instruction in grades K-8.Trade Review“When I read Marian Small’s work, I see the power of math revealed, but I also see her work opening that power to so many students who might never otherwise experience it…I am a disciple of her approach to differentiating math!”- From the Foreword by Carol Ann Tomlinson, University of Virginia;“Successful instruction causes students to wonder, conjecture, investigate, collaborate, and talk math. Good questioning is central to all the above, and for ‘knowing what students know.’ Small’s book focuses on the big ideas of mathematics, with questions, examples, and parallel tasks that assess student understanding and promote learning. This book is a must-read for every preservice and inservice teacher.”- Carole Greenes, professor emerita, mathematics education, Arizona State University;“In a classroom full of students, it can be hard to meet the needs of all learners. That is where this book has your back. Marian Small provides meaningful tasks while modeling how simple tweaks and intentional number choice can unlock students’ mathematical potential.”- Graham Fletcher, math specialist;“Throughout her career, Marian Small has shown that ‘differentiation’ in math class does not mean ‘ability grouping’ or breaking mathematics down into tiny, digestible subskills. Marian’s kind of differentiation means focusing on big ideas, offering students choice, and being curious about students’ thinking. In the 4th edition of this essential book, Marian teaches us powerful questioning techniques with her trademark clarity and provides plenty of specific examples across the content strands and grade bands. We can use these questions with our students immediately and internalize Marian’s teaching strategies through practice. How lucky for us that she has crafted these questions that will encourage student thinking, build our curiosity, and teach us to craft good questions of our own.”- Tracy Johnston Zager, math coach;“I just finished teaching an elementary math methods course to teacher candidates in a graduate program. I wish I had had Marian Small’s Good Questions: Great Ways to Differentiate Mathematics Instruction in the Standards-Based Classroom to use with these preservice teachers. Small covers all the key content in the Common Core PreK–8 math curriculum, and she addresses the topic of open questions in a very accessible way. She walks the reader step-by-step through how to teach the big ideas in the CCSS PreK–8 math curriculum using specified open questions. At the same time, she provides a menu of choices so teachers can draw from their own expertise to select the open questions that they see fit. Each chapter explains math content in an easy-to-reference manner. It is like having a reference book and a teaching coach all in one book. This semester, I watched teacher candidates struggle with how to lead a Number Talk, because they were not sure which open questions to ask to facilitate learning. Small’s book provides the guidance that they need. I look forward to using Small’s book the next time I teach Elementary Math Methods to teacher candidates. Inservice teachers will also benefit from the practical ideas about how to promote higher-order math thinking by asking the open questions outlined in Good Questions.”- Felicia Darling, math instructor at Santa Rosa Junior CollegeTable of Contents Contents Foreword ix by Carol Ann TomlinsonPreface xi Organization of the Book xi Mathematical Practice Standards xii Changes in the Fourth Edition xiii Acknowledgments xiv Introduction: Why and How to Differentiate Math Instruction 1 The Challenge in Math Classrooms 1 What It Means to Meet Student Needs 3 Assessing Students’ Needs 4 Principles and Approaches to Differentiating Instruction 4 Two Core Strategies for Differentiating Mathematics Instruction: Open Questions and Parallel Tasks 6 Creating a Math Talk Community 13 1 Counting & Cardinality and Number & Operations in Base Ten 17 Topics 17 The Big Ideas for Counting & Cardinality and for Number & Operations in Base Ten 18 Open Questions for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 19 Open Questions for Grades 3–5 28 Parallel Tasks for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 36 Parallel Tasks for Grades 3–5 43 Summing Up 48 2 Number & Operations—Fractions 49 Topics 49 The Big Ideas for Number & Operations—Fractions 50 Open Questions for Grades 3–5 51 Parallel Tasks for Grades 3–5 57 Summing Up 64 3 The Number System 65 Topics 65 The Big Ideas for The Number System 65 Open Questions for Grades 6–8 66 Parallel Tasks for Grades 6–8 70 Summing Up 74 4 Ratios & Proportional Relationships 75 Topics 75 The Big Ideas for Ratios & Proportional Relationships 76 Open Questions for Grades 6–8 76 Parallel Tasks for Grades 6–8 84 Summing Up 90 5 Operations & Algebraic Thinking 91 Topics 91 The Big Ideas for Operations & Algebraic Thinking 92 Open Questions for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 93 Open Questions for Grades 3–5 98 Parallel Tasks for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 108 Parallel Tasks for Grades 3–5 111 Summing Up 116 6 Expressions & Equations and Functions 117 Topics 117 The Big Ideas for Expressions & Equations and for Functions 118 Open Questions for Grades 6–8 118 Parallel Tasks for Grades 6–8 128 Summing Up 134 7 Financial Literacy 135 Topics 135 The Big Ideas for Financial Literacy 136 Open Questions for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 137 Open Questions for Grades 3–5 139 Open Questions for Grades 6–8 143 Parallel Tasks for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 147 Parallel Tasks for Grades 3–5 149 Parallel Tasks for Grades 6–8 151 Summing Up 156 8 Measurement & Data 157 Topics 157 The Big Ideas for Measurement & Data 158 Open Questions for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 159 Open Questions for Grades 3–5 169 Parallel Tasks for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 181 Parallel Tasks for Grades 3–5 187 Summing Up 196 9 Geometry 197 Topics 197 The Big Ideas for Geometry 198 Open Questions for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 199 Open Questions for Grades 3–5 205 Open Questions for Grades 6–8 211 Parallel Tasks for Prekindergarten–Grade 2 224 Parallel Tasks for Grades 3–5 227 Parallel Tasks for Grades 6–8 231 Summing Up 240 10 Statistics & Probability 241 Topics 241 The Big Ideas for Statistics & Probability 242 Open Questions for Grades 6–8 243 Parallel Tasks for Grades 6–8 252 Summing Up 262 Conclusions 263 The Need for Manageable Strategies 263 Developing Open Questions and Parallel Tasks 264 The Benefits of These Strategies 266 Appendix A: Mathematical Practices Addressed in This Resource 267 Appendix B: Worksheet for Open Questions and Parallel Tasks 268 Glossary 270 Bibliography 280 Index 283 Index of Subjects and Cited Authors 283 Index of Big Ideas 286 About the Author 290

Simon & Schuster The Marathon Don't Stop: The Life and Times of
Book SynopsisA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER This “beautiful tribute to a legendary artist” (Quincy Jones) is the first in-depth biography of Nipsey Hussle, the hip-hop mogul, artist, and activist whose transformative legacy inspired a generation with his motivational lyrics and visionary business savvy—before he was tragically shot down in the very neighborhood he was dedicated to building up. For Nipsey Hussle, “The Marathon” was more than a mixtape title or the name of a clothing store; it was a way of life, a metaphor for the relentless pursuit of excellence and the willpower required to overcome adversity day after day. Hussle was determined to win the race to success on his own terms, and he wanted to see his whole community in the winner’s circle with him. A moving and powerful exploration of an extraordinary artist, The Marathon Don’t Stop places Hussle in historical context and unpacks his complex legacy. Combining on-the-ground reporting and candid interviews, “Rob Kenner has given us the book the world—and hip-hop and pop culture—has been waiting for…one that should be celebrated alongside the best biographies ever about iconic figures we have loved—and lost” (Kevin Powell, author of When We Free the World).Trade Review“Like dead prez said, ‘it’s bigger than hip-hop,’ and few embodied that more than Nipsey. His life must serve as a textbook example for anyone working towards uplifting their community, where the work, and not the fame, take full precedent. We need more people like Nipsey Hussle, which is what makes telling his story important.” -- Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson“Rob Kenner was part of the original editorial team who brought my vision for VIBE magazine to reality, and during his seventeen years at the magazine he always did outstanding work. The Marathon Don’t Stop is a beautiful tribute to a legendary artist.” -- Quincy Jones“You may have heard of Nipsey Hussle, but you don’t know the awesome story of one of the most inspiring men of his generation. Nipsey was the Tupac of his generation and this book explains why.” -- Touré, author of I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became an Icon“Ermias Asghedom’s all-too-short life was a pure epic run—from child prodigy, teenage baller, and young G to worldly rapper, hood builder, and global superstar. Rob Kenner’s thorough, definitive, and powerful telling of his story captures all of his heart, courage, and commitment. Read it and be inspired.” -- Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop“The Marathon Don’t Stop is chronicle of a complex love and Kenner delivers it with the clear-eyed authority that has made him one of the best culture writers of his era.” -- Dr. Joan Morgan, author of When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: A Hip-Hop Feminist Breaks It Down“Kenner episodically reconstructs Hussle’s evolutionary process, the long strides and long game he played to become a master of his own destiny in the voracious rap business, and a generous and visionary community leader in South Central Los Angeles. For those wanting an immersive, concentrated read about why Hussle’s run and ting still matters, The Marathon Don’t Stop provides layered chapters of incisive and insightful reveals.” -- Greg Tate, author of Flyboy in the Buttermilk“The assassination of Nipsey Husssle was, in many ways, the death of modern classical hip-hop. In death, Nipsey’s star has risen to the heavens. Rob Kenner illuminates the artist’s mortal side while artfully unpacking his humble beginnings and momentous victories. You see his flowers in bloom, in Technicolor, then and now. Behold.” -- Sacha Jenkins, filmmaker“With The Marathon Don’t Stop: The Life and Times of Nipsey Hussle, Rob Kenner has given us the book the world—and hip-hop and pop culture—has been waiting for. It is a powerfully written and reported biography of a life gone too soon, yes. But it is also history, sociology, psychology, and a case study of what is humanly possible, even for those of us born with very little. This is one of the finest pieces of literature about a real life I’ve ever read, and one that should be celebrated alongside the best biographies ever about iconic figures we have loved—and lost.” -- Kevin Powell, author of When We Free the World“What made Rob one of my favorite editors and my primary longform collaborator was his insightful eye, his innate sense of story, and his ability to appreciate the importance of minutiae as they relate to a larger narrative. He brings all of those skills to the forefront with this incredible book. Not only do you walk way appreciating Nipsey’s work, love for his community, and yes, hustle, but Rob also paints a sensitive portrait of Ermias the man. God rose inside of this man, and Rob captures every moment.” -- Cheo Hodari Coker, author of Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G.“An extraordinary accomplishment: a book about a rapper, a neighborhood, business and ownership, racism, immigration, friendship, family, art, and love . . . from the Pacific Ocean to the Red Sea. A masterclass in music journalism’s higher calling, The Marathon Don’t Stop is a book not only for Nipsey Hussle fans, but for anyone who wants to understand the brutal and beautiful truths of the country called America. Rob Kenner has been to the mountaintop, and brought the word back down for the rest of us. ” -- Peter Relic, author of For Whom the Cowbell Tolls: 25 Years of Paul’s Boutique“From the cradle to the grave, The Marathon Don’t Stop: The Life and Times of Nipsey Hussle is a deep dive into the man, music, and motivation of one of the most gifted rappers to emerge from the West in decades. More than a hustler, Nipsey Hustle was both a businessman and teacher who was equally inspired by family, the streets, and the motherland. With an eye for the real, writer Rob Kenner has composed a biography that is journalistically solid, cinematically vivid, as gritty as the streets of Crenshaw, and beautiful as a rose growing through concrete.” -- Michael A. Gonzales, co-author of Bring the Noise: A Guide to Rap Music and Hip-Hop Culture“A rigorously reported, gripping account of how Ermias Joseph Asghedom hustled his way into the hearts and minds of millions. Veteran journalist Rob Kenner takes us on a harrowing journey, from the embattled streets of South L.A. to the ancient shores of East Africa to tell the story of a conflicted gang member, gifted hip hop artist, and crafty businessman who devoted his life to transforming himself and his community by any means necessary.” -- Carter Harris, screenwriter, producer, and former editor at The Source and VIBE magazines“In his relatively short and tragic life, Nipsey Hussle was an icon of the new new music business, where sheer grit, determination—and, of course, natural talent—helped cement his undying legacy. One of hip-hop’s most powerful voices, Hussle was an entrepreneurial activist, a street corner philosopher whose everlasting contribution lies not just in the songs he made, but also in the way he chose to live. In The Marathon Don't Stop, veteran music journalist Rob Kenner tracks Hussle's life with verve and compassion, from his humble beginnings to his horrific ending, unpacking the chaotic world which made him, fueled the work that defined him, and sadly took him from this planet all too soon.” -- Paul Cantor, contributor to the New York Times, New York Magazine, and XXL

HarperCollins Publishers Inc Stealing Fire
Book SynopsisNational BestsellerCNBC and Strategy + Business Best Business Book of the YearIt’s the biggest revolution you’ve never heard of, and it’s hiding in plain sight. Over the past decade, Silicon Valley executives like Eric Schmidt and Elon Musk, Special Operators like the Navy SEALs and the Green Berets, and maverick scientists like Sasha Shulgin and Amy Cuddy have turned everything we thought we knew about high performance upside down. Instead of grit, better habits, or 10,000 hours, these trailblazers have found a surprising short cut. They''re harnessing rare and controversial states of consciousness to solve critical challenges and outperform the competition. New York Times bestselling author Steven Kotler and high performance expert Jamie Wheal spent four years investigating the leading edges of this revolution—from the home of SEAL Team Six to the Googleplex, the Burning Man festival, Richard Branson’s Necker Island, Red Bull’s training center, Nike’s innovation team, and the United Nations’ Headquarters. And what they learned was stunning: In their own ways, with differing languages, techniques, and applications, every one of these groups has been quietly seeking the same thing: the boost in information and inspiration that altered states provide. Today, this revolution is spreading to the mainstream, fueling a trillion dollar underground economy and forcing us to rethink how we can all lead richer, more productive, more satisfying lives. Driven by four accelerating forces—psychology, neurobiology, technology and pharmacology—we are gaining access to and insights about some of the most contested and misunderstood terrain in history. Book SynopsisTrade Review“Ever since the centuries of burning women healers as witches, because they taught women how to govern our own bodies, thus to control reproduction—the medical world hasn’t included all of humanity. Doing Harm shows what is left to be done, and directs both women and men toward healing.” — Gloria Steinem “Maya Dusenbery’s exhaustively researched book is equal parts infuriating and energizing. No woman will see the medical establishment, and perhaps even more profound, her own body, the same way after reading it. In a just world, it would be required reading in medical schools from this day forward.” — Courtney E. Martin, author of Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters “Maya Dusenbery brings new life to one of the most urgent yet under-discussed feminist issues of our time. Anyone who cares about women’s health needs to read this book.” — Jessica Valenti, author of Sex Object “Dusenbery challenges a new generation of women and practitioners to fight for medical equity—shinning a harsh light on the sex bias that pervades every level of medicine. It’s outrageous that such malignant neglect exists more than two decades after the government acknowledged the gaps in knowledge about women’s health.” — Leslie Laurence, co-author of Outrageous Practices “In this groundbreaking book, Maya shows how the same forces that hold women back in society more broadly lead to sub-par medical care and inadequate attention to health issues that impact women. Every doctor, scientist, health care provider and researcher should read this book. And so should every woman.” — Jill Filipovic, author of The H-Spot “Doing Harm is a deeply researched and very readable exploration of the systematic mistreatment of women in our medical system—and how even those with the best intentions perpetuate it. This book is an eye-opener; may it also be a call for real, sustained change.” — Kate Harding, author of Asking For It and co-editor of Nasty Women “An intensive, timely spotlight…Within an organized, well-balanced combination of scientific and social research and moving personal stories, Dusenbery makes a convincing case for the need for drastic industry reform and clinical refinement.” — Kirkus “Dusenbery’s excellent book makes the sexism plaguing women’s health care hard to ignore…skillfully interweaving history, medical studies, current literature, and hard data to produce damning evidence that women wait longer for diagnoses, receive inadequate pain management, and are often told they are imagining symptoms that are taken seriously in men.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review “Editor’s Choice by the New York Times” — “As seen on FRESH AIR” — “an antidote to the isolation and maddening self-doubt that this all-too-common dismissal can impose. Her careful evidence answers the uncomfortable question that so often niggles in the doctor’s office: ‘Am I getting lesser care because I’m a woman?’” — Ms. Magazine “well researched, wonderfully truculent…” — NYT Daily “Doing Harm methodically and thoroughly lays out an indictment of the medical systems that still largely discount the experiences of women both individually and collectively. Doing Harm demands nothing short of system-wide change, starting with a call to providers at the most basic level” — Rewire “Dusenbery, who was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, masterfully takes down the wide-reaching systemic gender bias in science and medicine that prevents doctors from truly hearing female patients.” — Health.com “In her new book, Dusenbery provides a comprehensive and much-needed look at how sexism in the medical field is hurting women. Much of the discrepancy in treatment stems from the “knowledge gap,” which Dusenbery writes about in depth” — Pacific Standard “Doing Harm demonstrates persuasively that subconscious gender-bias in medicine is very real and pervasive for women of all backgrounds, as doctors continue to apply a “one-size-fits-all” method of diagnosis and medical evaluation to their women patients.” — Pacific Standard “Dusenbery peels back the sick layers of America’s paternal healthcare system. She plays both patient and journalist, seamlessly combining history, research, and interviews into an easily digestible must-read. 5/5” — Bust Magazine “Dusenbery digs deeper into the issue, exploring the way gender bias in medicine often leaves women struggling for proper care.” — Tonic - VICE “the medical establishment has a poor history of taking women’s health issues seriously —a history that Feministing editor Dusenbery takes on with full force in her new book” — Harpers Bazaar “Through interviews with patients, doctors, and experts as well as a deep cultural analysis, Dusenbery presents a horrifying picture of what it means to be a woman who’s dismissed by her doctors.” — Bitch Media “Dusenbery’s book, based on two years of research into a host of conditions, exposes the systemic causes of these disparities and provides critically relevant information for the public—and for those in medicine, psychology, and the research sciences.” — Greater Good Science Center “In Doing Harm, Dusenbery explores how biases and sexism in medicine lead to harmful outcomes for women.” — Popular Science “Dusenbery says these experiences fit into a larger pattern of gender bias in medicine. Her new book, Doing Harm, makes the case that women’s symptoms are often dismissed and misdiagnosed” — NPR - FRESH AIR “Her new book is all about how women receive sub-par medical care because the medical community knows comparatively less about their bodies and diseases and too often doesn’t trust women’s reports of their own symptoms” — WNYC The Brian Lehrer Show “Maya Dusenbery explores how medicine often leaves women on the periphery of real medical advancement. She explores the horrific reality of how medical practitioners and academic researchers completely dismiss women.” — Marie Claire “Dusenbery writes about women’s pain and illnesses being overlooked because of their menstrual cramps, menopause, even entering motherhood.” — Dame Magazine “In her book, Dusenbery traces how women are overlooked in every corner of illness, from autoimmune diseases to chronic pain (which disproportionately affects women and includes everything from irritable bowel syndrome to migraines to arthritis).” — The Cut “Maya Dusenbery’s book, Doing Harm, explains how women’s health issues have historically been dismissed—and what we can do about it now.” — Broadly “Doing Harm is a fearless account of the incompetence of our culture when it comes to treating women properly. Dusenbery writes about the institutional systems that are against women—from philosophy to pharmacy to popular culture—in an accessible, engaging, and organized narrative.” — The Rumpus “Maya Dusenbery has added immensely to the literature on women’s health.” — NY Journal of Books

Pan Macmillan How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the
Book Synopsis'How Emotions Are Made did what all great books do. It took a subject I thought I understood and turned my understanding upside down' - Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point. When you feel anxious, angry, happy, or surprised, what's really going on inside of you? Many scientists believe that emotions come from a specific part of the brain, triggered by the world around us. The thrill of seeing an old friend, the fear of losing someone we love – each of these sensations seems to arise automatically and uncontrollably from within us, finding expression on our faces and in our behaviour, carrying us away with the experience. This understanding of emotion has been around since Plato. But what if it is wrong? In How Emotions Are Made, pioneering psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett draws on the latest scientific evidence to reveal that our common-sense ideas about emotions are dramatically, even dangerously, out of date – and that we have been paying the price. Emotions aren't universally pre-programmed in our brains and bodies; rather they are psychological experiences that each of us constructs based on our unique personal history, physiology and environment. This new view of emotions has serious implications: when judges issue lesser sentences for crimes of passion, when police officers fire at threatening suspects, or when doctors choose between one diagnosis and another, they're all, in some way, relying on the ancient assumption that emotions are hardwired into our brains and bodies. Revising that conception of emotion isn't just good science, Barrett shows; it's vital to our well-being and the health of society itself.Trade ReviewHow Emotions Are Made did what all great books do. Guilford Publications Ordinary Magic First Edition
Book SynopsisFrom a pioneering researcher, this book synthesizes the best current knowledge on resilience in children and adolescents. Ann S. Masten explores what allows certain individuals to thrive and adapt despite adverse circumstances, such as poverty, chronic family problems, or exposure to trauma. Coverage encompasses the neurobiology of resilience as well as the role of major contexts of development: families, schools, and culture. Identifying key protective factors in early childhood and beyond, Masten provides a cogent framework for designing programs to promote resilience. Complex concepts are carefully defined and illustrated with real-world examples.Trade Review"Nobody understands resilience as well as Ann Masten, and nobody writes about it as clearly, wisely, and deeply as she does. Dr. Masten is both a creator of new knowledge and a compelling narrator of the science and interventions that address how children manage to thrive in spite of adverse conditions. This indispensable book conveys the many facets of resilience, from neurobiology to cultural context to the importance of supportive relationships. Accessibly written, it makes complex concepts and processes easy to understand and impossible to forget. The book can be used as a text for undergraduate and graduate courses on typical development and developmental psychopathology, as well as in seminars for clinical interns and postdoctoral fellows."--Alicia F. Lieberman, PhD, Irving B. Harris Endowed Chair in Infant Mental Health and Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco "I consider Masten to be the preeminent thinker on resilience--and one of psychology's very best writers. Few authors possess the theoretical, empirical, clinical, and translational prevention skills to write such an integrative, well-presented volume. Masten makes a critical contribution to understanding the multiple pathways toward resilient outcomes for individuals who have experienced significant adversity. She does an amazing job of integrating literature from a variety of disciplines and levels of analysis. This is by far the best book I have ever read on resilience, and will set the standard for a long time to come."--Dante Cicchetti, PhD, McKnight Presidential Chair of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota "Resilience is an invaluable concept for our turbulent times. Masten, a highly esteemed developmental psychologist, has been at the forefront of resilience theory and research for decades. In this beautifully crafted volume, she guides readers through the advances in our knowledge of the multilevel processes--the interactions of neurobiological, psychological, family, and sociocultural influences over time--that enable children and adults to survive and grow stronger from serious life challenges. Essential reading for scholars, students, and mental health professionals who strive to understand and promote positive adaptation in traumatic situations and multistress contexts."--Froma Walsh, MSW, PhD, Mose and Sylvia Firestone Professor Emerita, School of Social Service Administration and Department of Psychiatry, University of Chicago, and Codirector, Chicago Center for Family Health “Ordinary Magic is an extraordinary achievement. Ann Masten has succeeded in integrating, synthesizing, and extending 40 years of resilience research into a compelling and highly readable volume. The book is audacious in scope, with Masten moving easily from genes to culture writ large. It is a ‘must read’ for a broad audience, including mental health practitioners, senior scholars, educators, and students.”--Deborah Lowe Vandell, PhD, Founding Dean, School of Education, University of California, Irvine -Table of ContentsI. Harvard University Press The Evolving Self
Book SynopsisThe Evolving Self focuses upon the most basic and universal of psychological problems—the individual’s effort to make sense of experience, to make meaning of life. Meaning-making is a lifelong activity that begins in earliest infancy and continues to evolve through a series of stages encompassing childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.Trade ReviewKegan’s great contribution is his description of the powers and difficulties entailed in each of these bases for conducting relations with self and others and his systematizing of considerations involved in changing from one basis to another… Kegan’s is indeed a provocative contribution! -- Guy E. Swanson * American Journal of Education *Kegan acknowledges a debt to Piaget, Kohlberg, and the psychoanalytic object-relations theorists. He regards his theory as a synthesis and extension of their views, resulting in a developmental theory that presents a unified conceptualization of affective, cognitive, and moral development. Individual chapters are devoted to each of six developmental stages—their growth and loss. The last chapter explores the implications of the theory for psychotherapy and for implementing growth in everyday life… The theory is elegant… There is much food for thought and many hypotheses for research in Kegan’s book. If one has not appreciated the importance of meaning-making as a central concept in personality theorizing, the book might even propel one into the next stage. More likely, the reader will…obtain some important new insights. All in all I recommend the book highly. -- Seymour Epstein * Contemporary Psychology *A landmark book… [It] proposes to integrate thought and emotion in human development and I responded to it on this double level. Breathlessly I encountered all the disparate ideas I had had about human development in the last ten years, all under one single solidly constructed theoretical roof… It is a book about meaning-making which revises one’s own meaning-making in very profound ways. -- Sophie Freud Lowenstein * Review of Psychoanalytic Books *Replete with literary allusions and personal anecdotes, this scholarly and appealing discourse represents a fascinating appraisal of the evolution of the self, devoting particular attention to the role of environmental forces which may have crucial impact on the individual. It evaluates, compares, and contrasts the contributions of Piaget, Erikson, Freud, Kohlberg, and others in a refreshing and informative fashion. Written by a clinician, the book also proposes a thought-provoking metatheory of therapy and considers the topic of depression from an evolutionary orientation. [This work is] well articulated and comprehensive in scope. -- Lucille F. Halgin * Library Journal *Robert Kegan has created a new perspective of personality development, focusing on the dynamics of the evolving self. The perspective integrates two universal human processes—meaning-making and social development—into a scheme that can be used to derive testable generalizations and simultaneously inform the practice of therapy. A very tall order which he fulfills admirably. -- Chris ArgyrisKegan has written a vigorous, exhilarating, and brilliant book. If it is read with the same grace and modesty and aliveness with which it is written, it could make psychotherapy more useful, psychology richer, and speculation on the nature of being human infinitely more rewarding. -- Robert L. GrossmanA major contribution to the human development literature. Like Freud, Kegan’s literary style matches the brilliance of his insights. -- William R. Torbert, Boston CollegeIf one could only buy one book on child development, The Evolving Self would bet the book to buy… It reflects the state of the art. -- George E. Vaillant, M.D.Here is a bright, ambitious mind, integrating old ideas from such diverse sources as Freud, Piaget, Erikson, and Kohlberg into an original synthesis. Kegan seems to be the first Neo-Piagetian who is able to look at the evolving person as more than a succession of systems but as a whole human being. -- Ernest S. Book SynopsisIn a Different Voice is the little book that started a revolution, making women's voices heard, in their own right and with their own integrity, for virtually the first time in social scientific theorizing about women. Its impact was immediate and continues to this day, in the academic world and beyond.Trade ReviewTo those of us searching for a better understanding of the way men and women think and the different values we bring to public problems and to our private lives, [this book] is of enormous importance. -- Judy Mann * Washington Post *Theories of moral development are not mere abstractions. They matter—to the way children are raised, to female and male self-esteem, as ammunition for personal and political attack—and that is why Carol Gilligan’s book is important… [It] is consistently provocative and imaginative. -- Carol Tavris * New York Times Book Review *Girls in our society learn early on that they are expected to behave in certain ways. In her 1982 book In a Different Voice, Carol Gilligan, a psychologist at Harvard University, wrote about the powerful messages young girls receive from those around them. Girls are expected to be compliant, quiet and introspective. They soon learn that they should suppress any open expression of aggression or even strong non-compliant feelings. They also learn…to value relationships more than rules. -- T. Berry Brazelton, M.D. * New York Times Syndicate *It has the charge of a revelation… [Gilligan] flips old prejudices against women on their ears. She reframes qualities regarded as women’s weaknesses and shows them to be human strengths. It is impossible to consider [her] ideas without having your estimation of women rise. -- Amy Gross * Vogue *Gilligan’s book is feminism at its best… Her thesis is rooted not only in research but in common sense… Theories of human development are never more limited or limiting than when their bias is invisible, and Gilligan’s book performs the vital service of illuminating one of the deepest biases of all. -- Alfie Kohn * Boston Globe *A profound and profoundly important book. It poses a challenge to psychology… But it may be just what we need to revitalize our field and bring it into a more meaningful alignment with reality. -- Elizabeth Douvan * Contemporary Psychology *An important and original contribution to the understanding of human moral development in both men and women. Carol Gilligan writes with literary grace and a real sensitivity to the women she interviewed… Her book has important implications for philosophical as well as psychological theory. -- Lawrence Kohlberg

Oxford University Press The Globalization Paradox Why Global Markets
Book SynopsisFor a century, economists have driven forward the cause of globalization in financial institutions, labour markets, and trade. Yet there have been consistent warning signs that a global economy and free trade might not always be advantageous. Where are the pressure points? What could be done about them? Dani Rodrik examines the back-story from its seventeenth-century origins through the milestones of the gold standard, the Bretton Woods Agreement, and the Washington Consensus, to the present day. Although economic globalization has enabled unprecedented levels of prosperity in advanced countries and has been a boon to hundreds of millions of poor workers in China and elsewhere in Asia, it is a concept that rests on shaky pillars, he contends. Its long-term sustainability is not a given. The heart of Rodrik''s argument is a fundamental ''trilemma'': that we cannot simultaneously pursue democracy, national self-determination, and economic globalization. Give too much power to governmentsTrade ReviewReview from previous edition This book takes on the biggest issue of our time - globalization - and eloquently enlarges the debate about the extent and limits of global cooperation * Gordon Brown, MP *In this powerfully argued book, Dani Rodrik makes the case for country-specific paths to economic development and saner, more sustainable forms of growth. A provocative look at the excesses of hyper-globalization, The Globalization Paradox should be required reading for those who seek to prevent the financial crises and unfair trade practices that feed the backlash against open markets * Nouriel Roubini, co-author of Crisis Economics: A Crash Course in the Future of Finance *Dani Rodrik may be globalization's most prominent - and most thoughtful - gadfly. In The Globalization Paradox, he wonders aloud whether extreme globalization undermines democracy - and vice-versa. Read it and you'll wonder, too * Alan S. Blinder, former Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve *His excellent new book is a sequel to an earlier book about the often disruptive impact of international trade on national labor markets and social policies. The new book develops and extends this theme to include financial globalization... Rodrik concludes by considering how the world economy might be reformed * Robert Rowthorn, Finance and Development *His message is nuanced and rigorous, drawing on history, logic and the latest economic data, he manages to convey it in simple, powerful prose tht any reader can follow * Steven Pearlstein, The Washington Post *Simply the best recent treatment of the globalization dilemma. . . he gives us nothing less than a general theory of globalization, development, democracy, and the state. The book provides the pleasure of following a thoughtful, critical mind working through a complex puzzle. Rodrik writes in highly friendly and nontechnical prose, blending a wide-ranging knowledge of economic history and politics and a gentle, occasionally incredulous, skepticism about the narrow and distorting lens of his fellow economists * Robert Kuttner, The American Prospect *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Recasting Globalization's Narrative ; 1. Verso Books Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’
Book SynopsisHow the law harms sex workers - and what they want insteadDo you have to endorse prostitution in order to support sex worker rights? Should clients be criminalized, and can the police deliver justice? In Revolting Prostitutes, sex workers Juno Mac and Molly Smith bring a fresh perspective to questions that have long been contentious. Speaking from a growing global sex worker rights movement, and situating their argument firmly within wider questions of migration, work, feminism, and resistance to white supremacy, they make it clear that anyone committed to working towards justice and freedom should be in support of the sex worker rights movement.Trade ReviewWith fine, lucid discourse, Juno Mac and Molly Smith decline to engage in the typical back and forth that drones on between the would-be saviors, the scolds, and the glorifiers to go to the heart of the matter- sex work as labor, with a work force ready to speak their minds and fight for their rights. They avoid easy answers and ask the reader to rethink sex work. -- Susie Bright, author of Big Sex Little Death: A MemoirSmith and Mac are sharply honest about the emotional, social and political realities of sex work in all its forms and geographies, eschewing pearl-clutching or cheerleading for a laser-guided honesty and frankness about what can improve the lives and experiences of sex workers around the globe, regardless of social class. Revolting Prostitutes is key to understanding how important the rights of sex workers are, and what is at stake when policy is misguided or clouded in sentimentality and gut-feeling over straight evidence. A must-read for politicians, policy makers, and anyone keen to understand the realities of modern sex work. -- Dawn Foster, author of Lean OutRevolting Prostitutes will fuel the fight for sex workers' rights with fresh thinking on feminism, deep analysis of policing and the law, and a critical examination of sex work itself. Smith and Mac have drawn together a radically inclusive map for liberation. -- Melissa Gira Grant, author of Playing the WhoreEssential reading for feminists engaged in sex work and those studying it. By centering their analysis squarely on the issue of labor rights and upholding harm reduction as a critical benchmark, the authors take on entrenched positions in the feminist struggles over prostitution work and propose a subtle but powerful shift in the terrain of future debate. -- Kathi Weeks, author of The Problem with WorkRevolting Prostitutes is a book I have been waiting for. It is uniquely fit to address the destructive divisions that exist among feminists concerning prostitution. Rejecting the equally unacceptable alternatives of condemnation and glorification of sex work, the authors provide a powerful account of the work itself, the issues it raises, the institutional policy that shape it, all the while demonstrating that sex workers struggles are crucial to any movement for social justice. Well researched, beautifully written, Revolting Prostitutes should be widely read, especially, but non only, by feminists. -- Silvia Federici, author of Caliban and the WitchRevolting Prostitutes succeeds as a well-reasoned, grounded and stubbornly materialist defense of sex workers rights in a literature characterized largely by sex panic, voyeurism, and extrapolation. -- Jennifer McGibbon * Alternate Routes: A Journal of Critical Social Research *An essential addition to the feminist canon and required reading for anyone who cares about equality and human rights. * Independent *[Revolting Prostitutes] tackles complex topics that even sex workers struggle with, criticizing issues like classism in the sex worker community, professional dominatrixes who distance themselves from full-service sex workers out of whorephobia, and why decriminalization isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. -- Ana Valens * The Daily Dot *Revolting Prostitutes is a thrilling and formidable intervention into contemporary discussions of sex work, and settles the debate in favor of full and immediate global decriminalization. It does so without insisting that there is nothing troubling about sex work: about the psychosexual forces that lead men to buy it, or the economic forces that compel women to sell it. ... It is a model of how to write about politics - or, indeed, anything. -- Amia Srinivasan * The Chronicle of Higher Education *[Revolting Prostitutes] advocates for the complete decriminalization of sex work all over the world. -- River H. Kero * Book Riot *One of the most important books about sex work ... Beautifully written and meticulously researched, this book will change what you think you know about sex work. -- Kate Lister * Guardian *

HarperCollins Publishers Out
Book SynopsisThe hotly anticipated final book of bestselling author Tim Shipman's Brexit quartet. The Johnson Years to Rishi Sunak''Magnificent Pacy and packed with delicious details Shipman puts you in the room His analysis is sharp and full of insight For those seeking a moment-by-moment insider history it will not be topped'' FTHow did Boris Johnson supersede Theresa May to become Britain''s Prime Minister? How did he pursue his promise to Get Brexit Done amidst multiple Brexit secretaries, repeated coup attempts and reshuffles, and an extraordinarily terse relationship with Brussels? What really happened in Downing Street from the political choices to the party place settings as the pandemic took the world in its grip? Out follows from May''s resignation through to the tussles over the final Brexit deal, the government''s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and our shortest serving PM ever.If pre-Theresa May Westminster was largely obsessed with the clever idealism of The West Wing, marinated in the farce of The Thick of It, the parable of these years became Game of Thrones, the pseudo-medieval swords and shagging epic pitching warring factions against each other in the quest for the iron throne. At the centre of the action was Tim Shipman, chief political commentator for the Sunday Times, taking notes on the guts and gore and tears.Out is a riveting, rambunctious account of the most dramatic years in modern British politics.

Dover Publications Inc. Meditations
Book Synopsis One of the world''s most famous and influential books, Meditations, by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 121?180), incorporates the stoic precepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in A.D. 161, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness.Reflecting the emperor''s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct, this eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one''s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of inevitable pain, loss, and death ? the suffering at the core of life ? Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one''s control and a focus on one''s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of the classic George Long translation, this updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century but also offers today''s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life.

Penguin Books Ltd The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy
Book SynopsisDoes America's pro-Israel lobby wield inappropriate control over US foreign policy? This book has created a storm of controversy by bringing out into the open America's relationship with the Israel lobby: a loose coalition of individuals and organizations that actively work to shape foreign policy in a way that is profoundly damaging both to the United States and Israel itself. Israel is an important, valued American ally, yet Mearsheimer and Walt show that, by encouraging unconditional US financial and diplomatic support for Israel and promoting the use of its power to remake the Middle East, the lobby has jeopardized America's and Israel's long-term security and put other countries including Britain at risk.
