Book SynopsisFootball Comes Home unearths the cultural, political, and social properties of European football clubs and associations. Christos Kassimeris examines the background of five hundred football clubs and associations from around Europe, providing all the relevant historical information that concerns their origins and standing in society. This book also analyzes the clubs'' and associations'' emblems, revealing the symbolic significance and a wealth of historical and cultural information. By examining football in a social science context, rather then just a geographic context, this book reveals the ways in which football transcends national boundaries and stereotypes.Trade ReviewCultural Studies has long been criticized for neglecting sport. Football Comes Home distinctly addresses this oversight. Based in semiotic analysis it provides an original survey of European football insignia and in so doing offers an insightful symbolic history, giving view to the deep structures of identity that are not revealed by more standard forms of social research. For academics, students and even the general reader interested in the cultural significance of football, this is an essential book. -- John Hughson, International Football Institute, University of Central Lancashire, UKFootball Comes Home is an interesting and original attempt to examine the symbolism of football clubs, focusing specifically on the origins and, to a lesser degree, the evolution of club badges. This book uses the club badge or emblem as a way into a much broader analysis of the changing historical and cultural identities of European football. All this adds up to what is, to my knowledge, the most detailed and thorough examination of the symbols associated with football clubs ever conducted. -- Matthew Taylor, De Montfort UniversityIt is rare that a book combines intellectual rigor with popular cultural study to such a degree. There have been lots of good academic books on European football as popular culture over the years - many of which appear in the bibliography to this book. There have also been plenty of publications which explore the vagaries of semiotics and sport and media cultures. To marry the two, as Christos Kassimeris does in this excellent book, is a real achievement. Highly recommended. -- Steve Redhead, Chelsea School at the University of BrightonTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Football semeiosis Chapter 3: The origins of football Chapter 4: Herald the ambassador Chapter 5: More than a club Chapter 6: Social status and religion Chapter 7: Nationalizing football Chapter 8: Conclusion 9 Selected Bibliography 10 Index 11 About the Author

The text then covers key concepts and theoretical constructs that define the global context for sustainable environmental practices, such as the key thinkers and theories pertaining to sustainable environmental practice, and the key international agencies and treaties involved in global discussions. Book SynopsisSouth Tyrol, a region in the heart of the Alps about half the size of Connecticut, brings into sharp focus an important part of twentieth-century history. Tyrol, a province that had been part of Austria for over 500 years and was almost totally German-speaking, was split in two after World War I and the southern part awarded to Italy as spoils of war.The first phase to follow after the split of Tyrol was systematic subjection by the Italian Fascists of what had been a regional majority in South Tyrol, but was now a minority within Italy. In a second phase, to gain an Italian majority, the country was settled with Italians from the south, who had a totally different mentality from the Italians residing in South Tyrol. With the emergence of National Socialism in Germany, and eventually with the Hitler-Mussolini Agreement of 1939, a third phase emerged: an experiment in ethnic cleansing called the Option. Eighty-six percent of all South Tyroleans agreed to leave South Tyrol and become citTable of ContentsI: 1918–1922: From the Division of Tyrol to the March on Bozen; II: Ettore Tolomei 6; III: 1922–1938: The Fascist Policy towards South Tyrol; IV: 1939: Between Fascism and National Socialism — The Option; V: 1940-1945: Resettlement and “Reunification”; VI: 14 September 1945: No Return to Austria; VII: 1946: The Gruber-De Gasperi Agreement; VIII: 1948-1969: From Pseudo-Autonomy to the “Package”“Break with Trient!”; IX: From the “Package” to the Present

Book SynopsisRevisits the major intellectual debates and key players of two decades, covering the terrain of left debates in the United States over foreign policy from the Balkans to 9/11 to Iraq, and over domestic policy from the culture wars of the 1990s to the question of what (if anything) is the matter with Kansas.Trade Review[E]ngaging and provocative. [Aims] to stimulate the Left through an injection of new ideas. To the extent that these ideas challenge what some see as core Leftist convictions, some on the Left - those who are content to stay the course and await the coming revolution - will not welcome them. But those who see the Left at a critical crossroads, who believe that its recent political failures have amplified the need for the Left to reinvent and revitalize itself, will certainly find these ideas worth consideration... [Berube has] done valuable work in clearing the way for a more intellectually innovative and politically effective Left. * Marx & Philosophy *Youll rejoice that theres such an intelligent and even-minded critic of the left who takes his principles seriously enough to challenge those who threaten to destroy them from within. * Bookforum *Bérubé links progressives inability to control the conversation on national security during the Bush administration to cultural studies failure to deliver on its promise of a vibrant New Left. And in the process, he also tries to imagine a newer and better onea left that both knows what is worth fighting for and how to fight for it. * American Prospect *If Berube succeeds in making leftists, from center-left politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank all the way out to the most radical anarchists, ponder the question of violence seriously, he will have done an inestimable service. That he attempts to do just that makes the most important book I have read in the past five years. -- John McGowan in SymplokeA rigorous, hard-hitting, and impressively detailed critique and account of the United States left during wartimeand at war with itself. It is far and away the most thoroughly reasoned and researched brief for a middle way between a predictably anti-imperialist left and a revoltingly hawkish liberalism, and in this it is immensely useful both as a guide to recent debates and as a sort of internationalist handbook. Rousing, engrossing, principled, and brave. -- Eric Lott, author of The Disappearing Liberal IntellectualAn incisive critique of the excesses of the political and academic left. Bérubé is uniquely positioned to diagnose the relationship between policy debates over the Iraq War and the fate of cultural studies in United States. The result is a fog-clearing argument for a new left internationalism centered on human rights and supranational institutions, and a timely reconsideration of Stuart Halls rich analysis of the rise of Thatcherism in England. This is an important and bracing book. -- Amanda Anderson, author of The Way We Argue Now: A Study in the Cultures of TheoryBérubé is the kind of critic, and the kind of advocate, that the Left desperately needs. I sometimes disagree with him, and then I argue with him in my head. I strongly recommend this practice: read him, learn from him, argue with him. It is a wonderfully bracing experience. -- Michael Walzer, editor, Dissent MagazineBérubés new book delivers an incredibly timely message of tough love to the American Left. On issue after issuefrom Afghanistan to Iraq to the domestic fronthe separates progressive myth from progressive reality. In the process he distinguishes good reasoning from bad among the major political writers of the last generation and gives us a fresh agenda for future work. -- Cary Nelson,University of Illinois, Urbana-ChampaignIndefatigably clear-minded and relentlessly researched, Bérubés The Left at War offers an invaluable excavation of just what has gone wrong, and occasionally right, with the academic/intellectual left in America. Book SynopsisDisaster can strike without notice. In a split-second the forces of nature, human intervention, or a simple twist of fate can place lives in jeopardy. A ship sinks, a plane crashes, a child wanders deep into the forest. Death is imminent, except for the bravery and persistence of small groups of men and women who enter these dark frontiers as rescuers. Of course they fail sometimes but often they return with the near dead, plucking them from the hungry jaws of disaster. Written by veteran newsman Dean Beeby, Deadly Frontiers: Disaster and Rescue on Canada''s Atlantic Seaboard tells the stories of real-life heroes, and of the bureaucracy and bungling that threaten their lives and those they have sworn to save. In Deadly Frontiers, Dean Beeby deals with the chilling question of Canada''s preparedness for disaster, as he investigates the most significant events in the contemporary history of search and rescue. Canada occupies a unique position in the rarified world of search and rescue. The second-largest country on the planet, Canada has three jagged coastlines, an immense internal wilderness, and a vast Arctic to swallow hapless travellers. Since the Second World War, Canada''s East Coast has been the crucible for modern search-and-rescue techniques and equipment. This hard-won experience has been driven mostly by disaster, from the 1982 sinking of the Ocean Ranger oil rig off Newfoundland to numerous cargo-vessel disappearances in the 1990s, including the Protektor, Gold Bond Conveyor, Marika, and Vanessa. Ground search and rescue, a special branch of this culture, was reborn in 1986 during the protracted search for a lost child in the forests north of Halifax. Swissair Flight 111 plunged into waters off Peggy''s Cove, Nova Scotia in 1998, triggering a massive search-and-recovery effort, as well as a fundamental rethinking of emergency response. The worst disaster within the search-and-rescue community itself was the 1998 crash in Quebec of a Labrador helicopter from Greenwood, Nova Scotia, leaving six rescue specialists dead among the charred wreckage. In Deadly Frontiers, author Dean Beeby examines official documents, forensic evidence, and the personal histories of those involved in these cases and more. His book is a frank examination of how Canada''s tragedies and triumphs have helped forge a professional search-and-rescue culture that is second to none.

Book SynopsisPassion, obsession, addiction, vision, and despair -- these are just a few of the themes explored by Mitchell Parry in this poignant portrait of Austrian poet Georg Trakl. Born in Saltzburg in the second half of the 19th century, Trakl was severely addicted at an early age. He smoked opium and later took up chloroform, alcohol, and cocaine. He was passionately obsessed with his younger sister, witnessed the bodies of partisans hanging in trees, and attempted suicide on more than one occasion. He died at the age of twenty-four, leaving behind a legacy of poems that capture the anxiety, passion, and exhaustion of early twentieth-century Austria and the years leading up to the First World War. Using Trakl as a lens, Parry explores the world of Freud, Wittgenstein, Rilke, Klimpt, Kakoschka, Loos, Kandinsky, and Klee, a time when Europe is drawn through the crucible of Modernism. In this blend of fact and fiction, poetry and prose, Parry flirts with darkness, plunging into a sordid and dangerous world and exploring the complex relationship between poetry and extremity. The result is both chilling and glorious.

Book SynopsisLiberty and Order is an ambitious anthology of primary source writings: letters, circulars, debate transcriptions, House proceedings, and newspaper articles that document the years during which America''s founding generation divided over the sort of country the United States was to become. The founders'' arguments over the proper construction of the new Constitution, the political economy, the appropriate level of popular participation in a republican polity, foreign policy, and much else, not only contributed crucially to the shaping of the nineteenth-century United States, but also have remained of enduring interest to all historians of republican liberty. This anthology makes it possible to understand the grounds and development of the great collision, which pitted John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and others who called themselves Federalists or, sometimes, the friends of order, against the opposition party led by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and their followers, in what emerged as the Jeffersonian Republican Party. Editor Lance Banning provides the reader with original-source explanations of early anti-Federalist feeling and Federalist concerns, beginning with the seventh letter from the ''Federal Farmer'', in which the deepest fears of many opponents of the Constitution were expressed. He then selects from the House proceedings concerning the Bill of Rights and makes his way toward the public debates concerning the massive revolutionary debt acquired by the United States. The reader is able to examine the American reaction to the French Revolution and to the War of 1812, and to explore the founders'' disagreements over both domestic and foreign policy. The collection ends on a somewhat melancholy note with the correspondence of Jefferson and Adams, who were, to some extent, reconciled to each other at the end of their political careers. Brief, elucidatory headnotes place both the novice and the expert in the midst of the times. With this significant new collection, the reader receives a deeper understanding of the complex issues, struggles, and personalities that made up the first great party battle and that continue to shape our representative government today.

Book SynopsisFresh from a battle against monarchy, the American Founders were wary of a strong executive, but they were equally conscious that unchecked legislative power risked all the excesses of democracy. Creating an effective executive who did not dominate the legislative body posed a significant challenge. In THE CREATION OF THE PRESIDENCY, 1775-1789, Charles Thach''s lucid analysis reveals how these conflicting concerns shaped the writing of the Constitution and the early clarification of executive powers. Thach sets the stage by analysing the political tendencies during the war and under the Articles of Confederation, showing that experience with rash state legislatures and an ineffectual national Congress contributed to the desire for a strong executive. He presents clearly the scattered deliberations on the executive during the Philadelphia Convention and gives due attention to the important decisions on presidential power made by the First Congress. Originally published in 1923, this book has influenced decades of scholars. In 2003 Raymond Tatalovich and Thomas Engeman referred to it as the definitive statement of original intent with respect to the establishment of the presidency. Herbert Storing, in his introduction to the 1969 edition, described it as so useful and so sound as to be indispensable. Now available in this Liberty Fund edition, Thach''s pioneering study can again benefit readers interested in the formation of the US Constitution and the creation of the presidency. This volume addresses the practical issue of liberty and constitutional government: namely, how to design an executive power that will be strong enough to keep order yet remain compatible with individual liberty.

Book SynopsisLiberty Fund''s six-volume The Collected Works of Frédéric Bastiat series, of which The Man and the Statesman is the first volume, may be considered the most complete edition of Bastiat''s works published to date, in any country, and in any language. The main source for this translation is the seven-volume Oeuvres complètes de Frédéric Bastiat, published in the 1850s and 1860s. The present volume, most of which has never before been translated into English, includes Bastiat''s complete correspondence: 208 letters Bastiat wrote between 1819, when he was only 18 years old, until just a few days before his untimely death in 1850 at the age of 49. For contemporary classical liberals, Bastiat''s correspondence will provide a unique window into a long-forgotten world where opposition to war and colonialism went hand-in-hand with support for free trade and deregulation. Bastiat''s numerous letters to Richard Cobden, a Member of Parliament and best known today as the leader of the British Anti-Corn Law League, chronicle the profound effect the Anti-Corn League had on Bastiat. The League''s success in mobilising a popular movement in England to pressure the British government into abolishing the very protectionist corn laws in 1846, inspired Bastiat to emulate the League''s success in France by starting his own free-trade movement. This volume also includes articles and other writings on politics and current events that showcase Bastiat''s talent as a theoretician, a pamphleteer, a journalist, and a deputy (Member of Parliament) of the nascent French Second Republic. Together with the correspondence, the writings in this volume fill an important gap in our understanding of the lesser-known Bastiat, who, in just a few short years, made a profound impact on French intellectual and political life in Paris.

Book SynopsisRoger Sherman (17211793) was the only founder to sign the Articles of Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. He served 1,543 days in the Continental Congress and was a member of the five-man committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. At the Federal Convention of 1787 he spoke more times than all but three delegates and was the driving force behind the Connecticut Compromise. As a Representative and Senator in the new republic, he played critical roles in debates over the Bill of Rights, the assumption of state debts, and the creation of a national bank. He was also one of the leading political leaders in Connecticut for the latter part of the eighteenth century. Nevertheless, no book dedicated to his writings has ever been published. Collected Works of Roger Sherman brings together essays, documents, records of his remarks in the Constitutional Convention and in the First Federal Congress, and important representa

Book SynopsisToo often dismissed as the least philosophic of the Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin had a deep and lasting impact on the shape of American political thought. In this substantial collection of Franklin's letters, essays, and lesser-known papers, Ralph Ketcham traces the development of Franklin's practical-and distinctly American-political thought from his earliest Silence Dogood essays to his final writings on the Constitution and The Evils of the Slave Trade.

Book SynopsisRising income inequality has been at the forefront of public debate in Canada in recent years, yet there is still much to learn about the economic forces driving the distribution of earnings and income in this country and how they might evolve in the future. With research showing that the tax-and-transfer system is losing the ability to counteract income disparity, the need for policy-makers to understand the factors at play is all the more urgent. Income Inequality provides a comprehensive review of Canadian inequality trends, including changing earnings and income dynamics among the middle class and top earners, wage and job polarization across provinces, and persistent poverty among vulnerable groups. The Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), in collaboration with the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network (CLSRN), presents new evidence by some of the country's leading experts on the impact of skills and education, unionization and labour relations laws, as w

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Overall, for those committed to human rights struggles, Harder's study is grim reading. But it is also an important contribution to a critical understanding of Alberta's place in the national and international movement for human rights. It is curious that as we approach our provincial centenary, we seem to move further and further away from the progressive political culture that made Alberta a model of social experimentation during its formative years... Harder's study is a must-read for anyone interested in the state of human rights in Alberta." Catherine Cavanaugh, Legacy, Winter, 2003"This book explores the negative effect on women of the mega majority governments of Lougheed, Getty and Klein. It describes the resistance of these oil financed governments to women's struggle for equality. An interesting chapter is entitled Oil, Sex and Power. Alberta women have done not too badly in this hostile climate and this text could be a useful template in all provinces." Ronald F. MacIsaac, The Barrister"...the book is a vital reminder that if it weren't for the activism of feminists, our society would not be nearly as comfortable a place as it is today." Lorraine Turchansky, The Edmonton Journal"This work examines four periods of feminist claims-making strategies and provincial governmental resistance in Alberta..Harder provides a useful analysis of feminist strategies under difficult conditions. Recommended." J.G. Everett, University of Colorado at Denver, CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries"[Harder's book] examines the ways in which Alberta women's groups tried, with mixed results, to influence provincial policy on "women's issues" in the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Harder sees a definite trajectory in the province's response to feminist claims.. Harder's book is a grim reminder of the human cost of neo-liberal ideology." Alex Rettie, AlbertaViews"...State of Struggle makes an important contribution both to our understanding of Alberta politics and to knowledge of feminist organizing in Canada. In terms of the former, Harder's conceptualization of state forms is an important corrective to the notion of the Alberta provincial government as Conservative hegemon. Like any other state, its permeability changes with changing social, economic, and political conditions. In terms of the latter, Harder's careful history of feminist organizing in the province is a model for the kinds of provincial-level studies that are necessary to understanding the diversity of feminism in our highly decentralized federation. It is required reading for anyone with an interest in political economy or provincial politics." University of Toronto Quarterly, Vol. 74, No. 1, Winter 2004/5"This book presents a comprehensive account of feminist activism in Alberta from 1970 to the late 1990s. Actually, Harder prefers the term 'claimsmaking' to describe the activity of making claims on public policy and institutional structure. The provincial focus is welcome because so much has been written about the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC) and its struggles with Ottawa. After all, the provinces have jurisdiction over the actual implementation of policies that matter to women." Louise Carbert, Atlantis Journal, January 30, 2005"State of Struggle is a fascinating study of feminist 'claimsmaking' in Alberta. Lois Harder traces a rich history of women's organizing in Alberta, combined with a sharp analysis of the contemporary political context. Using an impressive range of sources-academic, government, women's organizations, and news media-with archival and interview research, Harder addresses many gaps in Canadian political science...[Harder's book] provokes the asking of vital questions, and makes a valuable contribution to political science in a wide range of areas including: Canadian politics, provincial politics, political economy, public policy and administration and women and politics." Tammy Findlay, Canadian Journal of Political Science, vol. 38, no. 2, 2005."As a critique of one major aspect of political and social life in Canada's only real "have" province, this volume should be of considerable interest both to those advancing the feminist cause and to Western Canadian political junkies." Book SynopsisThematic essays examine Indigenous hunting rights, resource law, gender, religious freedom, and family law.Trade Review"Nine writers provide essays on such topics as Hutterites, water rights, marriage, and Indians. Some of the authors deal with specific topics. Other essays by Wayne N. Renke, Dale Gibson, Arlene J. Kwasniak, Alastair R. Lucas, Marie L. Gordon, Jennifer Koshan and Elizabeth Whitsitt made good use of case studies as well as supreme court authority to produce a most interesting and readable book." Hugh Dempsey, Alberta History, March 2008"Like recent works on Nova Scotia and Manitoba, Swainger's volume deepens our understanding of the pivotal role courts play in shaping and reflecting the society in which they interpret law and dispense justice." Eric M. Adams, University of Alberta, The American Review of Canadian Studies, Winter 2008"The nine essays offered here are highly creditable, exhaustively researched, carefully controlled, firmly stated, and engagingly written. The editing is impeccable." Christopher English, Canadian Book Review Annual Online, 2007
