Cambridge University Press Early Greek Political Thought from Homer to the Sophists
Book SynopsisThis edition of early Greek writings on social and political issues includes works by more than thirty authors. There is a particular emphasis on the sophists, with the inclusion of all of their significant surviving texts, and the works of Alcidamas, Antisthenes and the 'Old Oligarch' are also represented.Trade Review"Gagarin and Woodruff have made a selection so generous that one could easily carve out one's more limited selections, according to one's special theme or purpose....this volume deserves a cordial welcome." Trevor J. Saunders, Canadian Philosophical Review"Because of its wide range of materials included and the helpful editorial additions, this is an extremely valuable anthology, certainly the best in its field. It would be an excellent text to use in courses on ancient political thought." Cambridge University Press Hobbes On the Citizen Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought
Book SynopsisDe Cive (On the Citizen) is the first full exposition of the political thought of Thomas Hobbes, the greatest English political philosopher of all time. Professors Tuck and Silverthorne have undertaken the first complete translation since 1651, a rendition long thought (in error) to be at least sanctioned by Hobbes himself. On the Citizen is written in a clear, straightforward, expository style, and in many ways offers students a more digestible account of Hobbes's political thought than the Leviathan itself. This new translation is both accurate and accessible, and is itself a significant scholarly event: it is accompanied by a full glossary of Latin terms, a chronology, bibliography, and an expository introduction. Throughout the editors have emphasised consistency in the translation and usage of Hobbes's basic conceptual vocabulary, respecting Hobbes's own concern for accurate definition of terms.Trade Review'Tuck's introduction is characteristically fresh and supple, with an enviable range of reference and an expository ease and vividness that bring out the excitement and importance of Hobbes's work splendidly … De Cive is one of the most valuable of all the Cambridge texts in the History of Political Thought. It packs in a remarkable amount of practical help to the reader without a hint of condescension. There could hardly be a better place to begin to grapple with the least comfortably dead of all the great political philosophers.' Cambridge University Press Plato The Statesman Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought
Book SynopsisThe Statesman is Plato's neglected political work, but it is crucial for an understanding of the development of his political thinking. In its presentation of the statesman's expertise, The Statesman modifies, as well as defending in original ways, this central theme of the Republic. This new translation makes the dialogue accessible to students of political thought and the introduction outlines the philosophical and historical background necessary for a political theory readership.Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Translator's notes; Chronology of principal events; Bibliography; Biographical note; Statesman; Index.

Cambridge University Press Guicciardini Dialogue Government Dialogue on the Government of Florence Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought
Book SynopsisThis is the first translation into English of Guicciardini's Dialogue on the Government of Florence. Written in the early 1520s by the author of the famous History of Italy, as well as a History of Florence and Political Maxims and Reflections, this dialogue presents what is arguably the most searching and comprehensive analysis of the politics of his times. Like Machiavelli, his contemporary and friend, Guicciardini rejects classical republican arguments in the name of the new political realism and acknowledges the important role of patronage and graft in contemporary politics and the illegitimacy of nearly all forms of political power. In this Dialogue he provides one of the clearest expositions of the term 'reason of state', which he was one of the first to employ and which he uses to justify the priority of state interest over private morality and religion.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements; Introduction; Principal events in Guicciardini's life; Bibliographical note; Dialogue on the government of Florence; Preface; Book I; Book II; Appendix: selected maxims; Biographical notes; Glossary; Index of names; Index of subjects.

Cambridge University Press Locke Political Essays Cambridge Texts in the
Book SynopsisWe know more about the development of John Locke's ideas than we do about almost any other philosopher's before modern times. This book brings together a comprehensive collection of the writings on politics and society that stand outside the canonical works which Locke published during his lifetime. In the aftermath of the Revolution of 1688 the three works by which he is chiefly known appeared: the Two Treatises of Government, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, and A Letter Concerning Toleration, and the themes raised in these works had been reflected upon over many years. Mark Goldie's edition makes possible the fullest exploration of the evolution of Locke's ideas concerning the philosophical foundations of morality and sociability, the boundary of church and state, the shaping of constitutions, and the conduct of government and public policy.Trade Review"I highly recommend Locke's seventy-five writings here..." S.V.H., Ethics"...the very existence of a collection of this breadth with this sort of documentation is so remarkable that it seems wrong to criticize it. It is an excellent idea well executed."
