Taylor & Francis Ltd Ethnosymbolism and Nationalism A Cultural
Book SynopsisAnthony D. Smith is Emeritus Professor of Nationalism and Ethnicity at the London School of Economics, and is considered one of the founders of the interdisciplinary field of nationalism studies. Anthony Smith has developed an approach to the study of nations and nationalism called ethno-symbolism, which is concerned with the nature of ethnic groups and nations, and the need to consider their symbolic dimensions. This text provides a concise statement of an ethno-symbolic approach to the study of nations and nationalism and at the same time, embodies a general statement of Anthony Smith's contribution to this approach and its application to the central issues of nations and nationalism. The text: sets out the theoretical background of the emergence of ethno-symbolism in a sustained and systematic argument explains its analysis of the formation of nations, their persistence and change and the role of nationalism demonstrates that an eTrade Review'For more than four decades Anthony Smith has been intensely and productively investigating the nature, wellsprings, and ramifications of nationalism. This excellent and concise distillation of his principal findings and conclusions will prove of immense value to anyone interested in this most consequential phenomenon.' Walker Connor, Middlebury College, USA 'Written with the clarity, sensitivity, and analytical nuance that have become hallmarks of Anthony Smith's scholarship, this book presents a masterful distillation of the ethno-symbolist interpretation of nationalism--a school of thought that counts the author as its most influential founding father. In crisp and succinct prose, it presents a fair and balanced overview of the theoretical thrust-and-parry in the field of nationalism studies, while articulating a compelling defense of the ethno-symbolist approach against the attacks of its critics.' Aviel Roshwald, Professor of History, Georgetown University, USA 'Anthony Smith has provided us with a conceptually powerful, clearly written statement of his life’s work devoted to the study of nationalism. By doing so, we have a compelling clarification of the nation as a historical community of culture. Thus, to view this book as merely a concise statement of the ethno-symbolic approach to the study of nations and nationalism is to fail to appreciate its significance; rather, it is a most convincing analysis of these crucially important phenomena—a book that must be read by all those who wish to understand these powerful factors that have shaped and are shaping our destiny.' Steven Grosby, Professor of Religion, Clemson University, USA 'For more than four decades Anthony Smith has been intensely and productively investigating the nature, wellsprings, and ramifications of nationalism. Taylor & Francis Spatiality Sovereignty and Carl Schmitt Geographies of the Nomos Interventions
Book SynopsisThe writings of Carl Schmitt are now indissociable from both an historical period and a contemporary moment. He will forever be remembered for his association with the National Socialists of 1930s Germany, and as the figure whose writings on sovereignty, politics, and the law provided justification for authoritarian, decisional states. Yet at the same time, the post-September 11th 2001 world is one in which a wide range of scholars have increasingly turned to Schmitt to understand a world of with us or against us Manichaeism, spaces of exception which seem to be placed outside the law by legal mechanisms themselves, and the contestation of a uni-polar, post-1989 world. This attention marks out Schmitt as one of the foremost emerging theorists in critical theory and assures his work a large and growing audience. This work brings together geographers, and Schmitt experts who are attuned to the spatial dimensions of his work, to discuss his 1950 work The Nomos of the Earth in the International Law of the Jus Publicum Europaeum. Explaining the growing audience for Schmittâs work, a broad range of contributors also examine the Nomos in relation to broader debates about enmity and war, the production of space, the work of Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, and the recuperability of such an intellect tainted by its anti-Semitism and links to the Nazi party. This work will be of great interest to researchers in political theory, socio-legal studies, geopolitics and critical IR theoryTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Issues and Methods in Comparative Politics
Book SynopsisBuilding on the strengths of the third edition, this highly regarded textbook continues to provide the best introduction to the strategies of comparative research in political science. Divided into three parts, the book begins by examining different methods, applying these methods to dominant issues in comparative politics using a wealth of topical examples from around the world, and then discusses the new challenges in the area. This thoroughly revised and updated edition features: Additional contemporary case studies including the democratisation of technology and the Arab Spring; Detailed discussion of regression analysis and diffusion; More analysis of justice, inequality, and compliance; Reflection on new methods and treatments of contemporary comparative politics. Balancing reader friendly features with high quality analysis makes this popular academic text is essential reading for evTrade Review'This book fills a longstanding gap in the literature for a clear and concise primer on the purpose and methods of comparative politics. It is also an excellent starting point for scholars and students alike who wish to come to grips with the most important arguments, findings and methodological challenges in the study of democracy and human rights. Required reading for budding comparativists, it should also serve as a benchmark which seasoned scholars should regularly revisit.' - Robert Mattes, University of Strathclyde, UK.'I have relied on this book for years to teach my masters students how to think through their methods choices. It provides a much-needed neutral overview of the trade-offs between Large-N and Small-N methods, presenting these options as the "methodological universe of the field" of comparative politics. The book presents complex material in a clear way – and is useful both in teaching and in my own research.' - Sherrill Stroschein, University College London, UK'Todd Landman and Edzia Carvalho have written a genuine multi-method textbook. They introduce students into substantive issues through the lenses of contrasting methods. Pluralistic and reflexive, well-structured, thoughtful, and up-to-date, Issues and Methods in Comparative Politics nicely fulfils its didactic promise. Students will encounter a most stimulating guide to the contemporary study of politics.' - Andreas Schedler, CIDE, Mexico CityTable of ContentsIntroductionPART I: WHY, HOW, AND PROBLEMS OF COMPARISON1. Taylor & Francis Routledge Philosophy GuideBook to Spinoza on
Book SynopsisBaruch Spinoza is one of the most influential and controversial political philosophers of the early modern period. Though best-known for his contributions to metaphysics, Spinozaâs Theological-Political Treatise (1670) and his unfinished Political Treatise (1677) were widely debated and helped to shape the political writings of philosophers as diverse as Rousseau, Kant, Marx, Nietzsche, and (although he publicly denied it) even Locke. In addition to its enormous historical importance, Spinozaâs political philosophy is also strikingly contemporary in its advocacy of toleration of unpopular religious and political views and his concern with stabilizing religiously diverse democratic societies. The first Guidebook to Spinozaâs political writings, The Routledge Philosophy Guidebook to Spinoza on Politics covers the following key points: Spinozaâs life and the background to his philosophy the key themes and arguments of the ThTrade Review"Spinoza’s political thought has not nearly received the attention it deserves.
